This popular group of mid-range and luxury camps offers a full range of accommodation options, from smart luxury tented camps such as Kwara Camp to more simple, affordable lodges such as Moremi Crossing and Gunns Camp. Kwando operate from five private concessions, one of the most diverse portfolio of camps. The concessions include Pom Pom in western Okavango, Gunns and Moremi Crossing in the central Okavango, Santawani in the Southern Okavango, Kwara in the eastern Okavango and Kwando in the Linyanti, northern Botswana.

From these concessions Kwando provide first rate safaris in some of the richest game regions of Botswana. These vast concessions allow guests undisturbed and more flexible game viewing, with off-roading and night drives.

Pom Pom Camp is a very popular mid-range tented camp set on the beautiful Pom Pom private concession in the western Okavango. Gunns Camp and Moremi Crossing provide simple accommodation for a more affordable water safari in the central Okavango. In the east, Kwara Camp and Splash Camp, lie on the large and game rich Kwara private concession. One of the oldest camps in the Okavango Kwara Camp was rebuilt and remerged as a fresh luxury tented camp, while Splash Camp is the newest camp in the portfolio, opening in 2019.

Lagoon Camp and Lebala Camp are set in the huge Kwando Concession in the Linyanti, known particularly for its superb dry season game viewing with huge elephant herds and good predator numbers. It is especially known for the wild dog packs. The game viewing is consistent and high quality

The group’s latter additions Nxai Pan Camp and Tau Pan Camp are situated in national parks, the Nxai Pan National Park and in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. These are however some of the most remote national parks in Botswana and offer a comfortable way of seeing these very special regions.

North of the Makgadikgadi salt pans Nxai Pan forms part of the great fossil pan system the bed of an ancient super lake fed by the Okavango, Zambezi and Kwando rivers. Tau Pan in the arid Kalahari Desert is home to a diverse population of both flora and fauna perfectly adapted to their harsh environment. These two camps are the perfect foil to the lush Okavango Delta.

With a focus on Botswana, the company allows guests an excellent opportunity to experience not just the wildlife but also the people and culture of the Okavango Delta. Tucked away in a remote corner of a vast 175,000 hectare private reserve, 4 Rivers is a classic Okavango tented camp offering a range of exciting safari activities in a peaceful setting. Set in one of Botswana’s prime concessions, Kwara camp is located in the vast Kwara concession on the north eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. This area boasts year round water and superb game viewing. The massive 175,000 hectares is shared with only three camps, ensuring a highly exclusive safari. The concession shares a 30km water border with the iconic Moremi Game Reserve and benefits from the flow of wildlife between these areas.

Splash Camp

Splash camp is a smart tented camp on the prime private concession of Kwara, in the eastern Okavango Delta, a pretty and game lively concession. The area benefits from permanent water, seasonal floodplains and dry savannah bush and is home to good resident game which has earned Kwara the reputation for delivering some of the best game viewing in Botswana. A variety of safari activities and interesting game viewing deliver a fantastic all-round safari.

Pom Pom Camp

Long established Pom Pom Camp is a charming camp set on the scenic island of Pom Pom in a private concession at the head waters of the Xudum river system. Lying on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve the game viewing in this pretty area is varied and interesting, enjoyed through a variety of land and water activities. A traditional, comfortable and friendly camp, Pom Pom is an old favourite in the Okavango.

Mma Dinare Camp

In a private concession, allowing off road and night time game drives, Mma Dinare is a lovely camp located in an exciting game rich area. The experience here is land based although mokoro trips are possible when water levels allow, usually June to September. Thatched and open, the main area is a great place to relax and watch the wildlife drawn to the Gomoti river. The rooms are spacious with their own verandas.

Lagoon Camp

With a fantastic location on the banks of the Kwando River in the far north of Botswana, Lagoon Camp offers a superb big game safari from a tranquil waterside setting. One of only two camps on the vast Kwando concession, a remote, wild and game lively area, Lagoon Camp offers a very exclusive safari experience. Lagoon is a traditional, pleasant camp with a simple style and focus on exciting game drives and serene boat cruises.

Lebala Camp

Lebala Camp lies on the vast, remote and game rich Kwando concession, north of the Okavango Delta. The 230,000 hectare Kwando concession is a top safari destination, especially big game sightings. This huge wilderness attracts large numbers of elephant and buffalo flocking to the river in the dry season (May-October). Predator sightings are frequent and include the rare wild dog. Lebala is a traditional tented camp offering a classic big game safari experience.

Tau Pan Camp

With impressive views of the vast Kalahari plains, Tau Pan Camp stands on a sand ridge deep in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and offers a fascinating desert safari experience. This comfortable lodge overlooks a permanent waterhole which allows constant game viewing right from the viewing deck. Explore this huge, wild and remote reserve with morning and afternoon game drives, or experience the desert through the eyes of the san bushman on informative walks.

Nxai Pan Camp

Nxai Pan Camp is the only permanent camp set in the striking Nxai Pan national park and offers an interesting desert experience in contrast to the lush Okavango. Nxai Pan camp is arranged around a busy waterhole with excellent views across the pans. A spacious, light and comfortable camp with a friendly atmosphere and interesting activities. Excellent between November to April, when the dazzling zebra migration arrives and the plains fill with game.

Rra Dinare Camp

Rra Dinare Camp (meaning ‘Father Buffalo’) lies on a private concession adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve in the southeastern side of the Delta, an area with varied and exciting game viewing. Overlooking the Gomoti flood plains, Rra Dinare has a scenic setting which enjoys a steady stream of wildlife throughout the day. A traditional, unassuming but very comfortable camp offering some excellent game viewing with 4x4 drives and seasonal moroko activities.

Little Kwara

Little Kwara borders Moremi Game Reserve, on the huge and game - rich Kwara Concession in the eastern Okavango Delta. With some of the finest game viewing in the Okavango, the Kwara concession is made up of a variety of habitats which ensures rich and varied game viewing. Importantly, both land and water based activities are offered year round. An intimate and luxurious tented camp, Little Kwara offers a vintage safari with superb guiding.

Lagoon - Reviews This was our favourite camp! The location was great, the guide and tracker were very nice and we had some great sightings (Matt and ..  ). It was great to spend our last days in Botswana with these wonderful people. In Lagoon camp we had the family room and 1 double room. Having the additional double room was not really necessary because the family room could easily have fitted all 5 of us . The campmanager told us that this family room can be booked for 5 people. Kwando – Planning a safari in an exclusive reserve

Kwando is one of Africa’s ultimate safari destinations .

Epic elephant herds roam across the floodplains. Huge herds of buffalo face off against ravenous lion prides. Leopards and wild dogs are seen in abundance.

Here is what you need to know to plan a safari in Kwando.

Where is Kwando?

Four unfenced private reserves are located around the Kwando-Linyanti river system, in the north of Botswana . This wilderness connects with the Chobe forests to the east and Okavango Delta to the south.

Habitats collide here, providing haven for an incredibly eclectic mix of animals. Kwando measures 2,300 km ² , with dense mopane forest (great for elephants), lush riverine forest (ideal for predators), and wide open plains (for all the grazers ).

Why is Kwando so special?

The mix of wildlife is one highlight, the diverse habitats another. There are no fences, so wildlife migrates freely through the area.

Kwando is also one of Africa’s largest private reserves ; there’s a real exclusivity as this wilderness is only shared by guests at two small camps .

Not only are predators abundant , game drives can take you off the trail , so you actively track predators in their natural habitat. If your idea of a safari is big cats and wild dogs then few reserves can rival Kwando .

Diverse safari programs are another key highlight. Here you can go on nighttime game drives , walking safaris and boating safaris . Few reserves make these activities so exhilarating and safe, in a landscape packed with dangerous animals.

How much does a Kwando safari cost?

This is one of the ultimate places for an African safari. It is not cheap . Expect to be paying USD 800 per person per night.

Where can you stay on a Kwando safari?

Kwando only has two camps and exclusivity is a big part of the appeal. You can’t explore the area unless you’re booked into an all-inclusive safari at one of these camps.

With its sublime settings along the Kwando River, Lagoon Camp is surrounded by big game, notably enormous elephant herds and packs of wild dogs. It’s a relaxed tented camp with activities on land and water.

Lebala Camp is located on open grasslands with expansive views from each of the tented chalets. It is remote and tranquil, an escape from the world that’s best in the dry season from June to October.

How to get to Kwando Reserve in Botswana?

Almost all guests visit Kwando on a fly-in safari . You can take a light aircraft safari flight from different destinations in Botswana. The cheapest and most regular connection is to Maun , the gateway town for a Botswana safari.

It is possible to visit Kwando on an overland safari , connecting the Okavango Delta with Kwando-Linyanti and then Chobe. You won’t be able to do this in your own vehicle. It requires a local guide who can get the necessary permissions to travel through private reserves on route.

Plus – there are no signposts out in this wilderness and you’ll be lost among elephants if going alone!

When to go on a Kwando safari?

The best game viewing is during Botswana’s dry season , which runs from June to October . June to August are more popular but September and October offer the ultimate big game encounters.

Only 32 guests can be accommodated in the reserve at any one time. Dry season is peak season all over Botswana. Some of the national parks can feel a little crowded. However, this limit on guests means Kwando provides safari exclusivity every day of the year.

You will need to book in advance for a dry season safari . Prices are cheaper for other months of the year.

Kwando camps have a reputation for being positioned in some of the best areas. Therefore they offer excellent safaris. All their Okavango Delta camps are excellent for birding. The Kwando Concession is particularly well known for wild dogs. Although all three big cats (lions, leopard, and cheetah) are also found here. From June/ July on wards game moves into the Kwando Concession. This is in order to access the waters of the Kwando River as the areas to the south and west dry out. You will encounter large wildebeest and zebra herds from June to November. The Dinare Camps (Mma & Rra) border the Moremi Game Reserve so also have some of the best game-viewing in the Okavango Delta.
