Cherry blossoms - sakura (桜).

Cherry blossoms are a widely celebrated flower in Japan, known as "sakura", and are significant in Japanese history. These short-lived pink flowers symbolize life, friendship, and are a cultural landmark of Japan itself.

It is during the spring time that the cherry blossoms are in season. The popularity of the cherry tree has brought in millions of travelers to Japan during this blossom period. Throughout history, the beauty of the cherry blossoms inspired many artworks and became an iconic symbol of the country. Sakura is regarded as a metaphor for life, reminding people the fragility of impermanence. Even though the life of the cherry blossom is short, it is all the more reason to enjoy them to the fullest. Sakura holds a deeper cultural meaning than its charming appearance.

The Japanese cherry blossom (sakura) has been a distinguished symbol of Japan for many centuries. Cherry blossoms signal a time of renewal and also coincide with the Japanese calendar year. When the flowers are in bloom, the people of Japan begin their new jobs and students enter a new school year. The season invokes feelings of hope and optimism as people set out to start a new chapter in their lives. The most commonly seen variety of the tree are the Yoshino cherry blossoms. To point out, cherry blossom trees do not in fact produce cherries or any kind of fruit. They are for ornamental use, but there are sakura flavored products you can try. When is the Cherry Blossom Season in Japan? The blooming season for cherry blossoms beings in the south and makes its way to the north. This is due to the warmer climates being located in the south. Additionally, in low-altitude regions the sakura trees bloom much later when compared to higher altitude areas. The list below shows the general dates for when the cherry blossoms begin to bloom.

Note: You are not guaranteed to see cherry blossoms during these approximate dates due to fluctuating weather conditions that can affect the blooming period.

Early blooming Cherry Blossoms Majority of the time, the blooming period for cherry blossoms usually occurs between late March to early May. However, there are early blooming varieties that appear as early as January. The Atami cherry blossoms, for example, are a unique species that are resistant to cold weather. They are originally native to India, but were introduced in 1871 by Italians. The locals of Atami continued to plant this variety all over the city. Kawazu Cherry Blossoms are another variety that starts its blooming as early as February. This variety was first discovered in the 1950s in the Kawazu area. Efforts were made to plant these specific sakura trees all over the city. Hanami Hanami translates to "flower viewing" and has been a popular way to enjoy the blossoms of sakura. It is a centuries-old custom, which is said to have originated from the Nara Period (710-794). During the night, places like Ueno Park hang paper lanterns to illuminate the cherry blossoms. This tradition is known as "yozakura", or night cherry blossoms. Hanami also comprises of picnic parties to add to the enjoyment of the season. Of course, there are a few manners to follow when having a hanami flower party. Picnic spots are on a first come first serve basis, but check if the park or area allows you to have a hanami party. In order to reserve a spot, you must have a mat and someone present to reserve it for the group. Normally, there is no garbage bin nearby, so it is highly encouraged to bring a bag with you to properly dispose your trash. Japanese Cherry Blossom Festivals To add to the experience of seeing the beautiful sakura trees, there are frequent festivities that take place in various areas of Japan. Enjoy the food, games, and entertainment of the cherry blossom festivals. The dates of these festivals vary depending on the blooming period of the cherry blossoms. Festival vendors sell a wide range of delicious foods and sweets for patrons during the flowers' celebration. There are also numerous games and acitvities with prizes for people to win, such as a balloon or goldfish. This would be a great opportunity to pick up regional souvenirs or seasonal goods at these festivals. Depending on the region, you may get a chance to see unique performances hosted by locals.

Why a private tour is the holiday you didn't know you needed, discover experiences tailored to your personal preferences when you plan your very own trip.

chan brothers sakura tour

Private tours - where you enjoy personalised service to help you put together a fully customised itinerary - give you freedom of choice and flexibility of timing, allowing you to fully maximise your vacations.

Yet they are still a relatively new concept to Singaporean holidaymakers, most of whom are more familiar with package tours and free and easy holidays.

There are several reasons for this, the main ones being how package tours are perceived to be more cost-effective (with ready-to-enjoy itineraries featuring major attractions), how free and easy holidays are perceived to be cheaper or how both package tours and free and easy holidays are widely available.

At the same time, there is a general misconception that private tours are high-end luxury tours that only high-net-worth individuals can afford.

On the contrary, this is not the case.

chan brothers sakura tour

Your holiday, your way

Private tours can cost below $1,000 per person for a China trip and go above $5,000 per person for Europe.

For a travelling party of four inclusive of air tickets on a regional trip, you can expect to pay from $1,900 per person for a 7-day Sri Lanka trip, or from $2,800 per person for an 8-day Korean trip.

Keen on Africa? A 10-day trip to Egypt starts from $3,900 per person while a 9-day getaway to Morocco starts from $4,500 per person.

Fancy travelling to Europe? You and your friends or family can expect to pay from $4,900 per person for a 10-day trip to Croatia or from $5,500 per person for a 10-day trip to Spain.

Ultimately, the cost really depends on your choice of destination(s), travel period, travel party size and travel requirements.

Costs may vary should you require customised conveniences such as good connecting flight timings on full-fledged airlines or centrally located hotels, tailored exclusive or extraordinary experiences such as Michelin-starred restaurant dining, overnight castle stay, behind-the-scene tour and private VIP access to attractions.

That's what makes private tours worth their price: their bespoke nature opens up more travel and lifestyle experiences to you and your family.

You can charter your own vehicle and driver, or hire your own guide conversant in your preferred language. You enjoy maximum flexibility because you can pick your preferred airlines, hotels, and restaurants. More importantly, you set the time and the duration for your activities.

Start the day at a later time, make adjustments to your itinerary on the fly, or call it a night at 5pm if you wish! Expenses can also be kept lower by staying at a lower-rated hotel or by scheduling one or two free-and-easy days at your destination(s) - especially if it's a city with a good transport system.

Either way, you get to travel on your own terms, enjoying quality time with family and friends without having to accommodate other travellers' needs and wants.

Reimagine the world

According to a spokesperson at Chan Brothers Travel, some of today's most popular destinations include Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China and Australia. These destinations attract repeat travellers every year eager to look beneath the surface and delve deeper into the wealth of scenic, historical, cultural and gourmet treasures on offer.

At the same time, there is also a growing demand for private tours to the Arctic Circle to experience the Northern Lights. More adventurous travellers are also venturing further afield to explore exotic destinations like South America, Africa and the Baltic States.

When is the best time to plan your private tour? As soon as you have a destination and agenda in mind!

Allow for six months' advance notice to travel over peak or popular seasons, such as sakura season in Japan, Aurora Borealis or Midnight Sun season in Nordic countries and Great Migration season in Africa. This is to ensure that you avoid disappointment, like finding out that the hotel you wanted to stay at is fully booked. What's more, you will also chalk up more savings by locking in your choices early.

Chan Brothers, the Singaporean travel company, has opened a new Japan Travel Centre.

Located in downtown Singapore, the new centre is designed as a “one-stop shop” for Singaporean travellers wanting to visit the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’.

It will offer a range of Japanese holiday itineraries, including city breaks, hot spring retreats, rail holidays, self-drive journeys and ski vacations, among others

Chan Brothers noted that Japan is consistently one of the most popular destinations for Singaporean travellers, and that its Japanese business has seen year-on-year growth of 20% in the first half of 2016. Demand has been boosted by the relative weakness of the Japanese yen and lower airfares, which are making travel more affordable.

To launch its Japan Travel Centre, Chan Brothers has announced plans for a three-day opening sale, which will run from 26-28 August.

Japan’s reopening to international travellers this month and the current favourable yen exchange rate have prompted travel agencies in Singapore to roll out attractive packages to satiate pent-up demand for the Land of the Rising Sun.

Since Japan announced in May that it will reopen from June 10 to tourists from 36 countries, including Singapore, tour companies have sprung into action.

Even with the higher number of procedures required currently for an organised tour to Japan, travel agencies expect the interest to remain strong into 2023.

For Chan Brothers Travel, one of Singapore’s largest travel agencies and tour operators, the strategy is multi-pronged. According to its spokesperson, Jeremiah Wong, the agency has launched longer tours that pack in enriched content to showcase the country’s offerings in greater detail.

The agency is also the first to introduce seasonal itineraries such as autumn, winter, and ski holidays to Hokkaido, as well as Sakura tours for April 2023.

On top of that, Chan Brothers Travel offers exclusive small group tours to Japan, capped at nine people – perfect for travellers who want more privacy with family and/or friends.

Wong said the agency is encouraging travellers to book in advance and beat potential airfare hikes by offering a time-limited offer of 50 per cent off the second traveller. Early bookers can also enjoy free cancellations and flexible refund policies.

A quick scan of the Internet reveals that a round-trip economy class flight on Singapore Airlines for the week before Christmas will set one back over S$3,000 (US$2,158.80). A flight with the same carrier for the same period in 2019, albeit booked in March the same year, cost under S$1,000.

Rising fares aside, travel agencies like H.I.S. International Travel are determined to appeal to tourists with its local expertise and extensive programmes.

Yusaku Koike, Singapore branch manager, H.I.S. International Travel, said: “The response has been overwhelming as people are thrilled to travel to Japan again. We have a few different itineraries to target different groups of travellers. For instance, our autumn itinerary is for those who want to catch the autumn maple leaf season, and our itinerary to Osaka caters to people who enjoy shopping.”

Koike told TTG Asia that H.I.S. has offices across Japan, and its connection with the Japan government and local prefectures means “we are able to provide not only a comprehensive itinerary but also exclusive services and information that travellers need, such as visa applications and immediate assistance from our Japan branches”.

Mike Harlow, general manager of luxury travel specialist Scott Dunn Asia, said: “It’s pretty clear that Japan will continue to be a popular destination – we are currently working to further expand our product and property offerings to bring more exclusive experiences that would appeal to our guests when the destination opens up for private tours and visits.”

the itineray stated there subject to changes

' class=

If I were you, I would post my review of (or experience with) that travel agency in the popular medias in Singapore, so that the potential customers of that travel agency would know before they book with that travel agency. That will get the attention of the travel agency to know they better improve.

Re "the itineray stated there (sic) subject to changes,"

that's a huge problem, Imo. If it is allowed to stretch to an extreme, then they can take you to anywhere except places listed in the itinerary. And you signed off with them... As a general rule of thumb, you join a specific tour because they have drawn up a list of places you want to visit and they have promised to take you to all of them, no? Even if one place is missng/replaced by another, the tour you join gets devaluated, breach of contract, no? Travel companies must always deliver the goods, except when natural/man-made disasters come about.

A crisp pork knuckle pairs perfectly with an ice-cold beer — and where better to get your fix of malt beers than in the city of Bamberg in Franconia? Sip on (or gulp, if you wish) Bamberg’s famous smoked beer — malted barley is dried over an open flame to achieve its dark hue and distinctive smoky flavour.

Carb lovers will also appreciate munching on maultaschen , or German ravioli. Originally found in the region of Swabia, the hearty dish is accentuated with various herbs and spices for an explosion of flavours with every bite.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
