Ala Archa National Park: the best day trip from Bishkek

This posi is about Ala Archa National Park. Ala Archa National Park is one of the best day trips from Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan . It is only 40 kilometers south of the capital. Therefore it is a very popular escape from city life for anyone that is looking for some fresh air and nature.

Why visit Ala Archa National Park

Ala Archa National Park lies in the Ala Too range of the Kyrgyz Tien Shan mountains and is home to several glaciers and river gorges. The name Ala archa translates as striped juniper and refers to the forests that characterize this beautiful landscape.

Ala Archa is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, featuring rugged mountains, deep valleys, and snow-capped peaks. The park offers a variety of hiking and trekking trails suitable for all levels of fitness and experience. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a casual hiker.

Ala-Archa National Park is also known for its diverse wildlife. Some of the animals that can be found in the park include the ibex, argali sheep, snow leopard, lynx, marten, and fox. The park also has a variety of bird species, including the golden eagle, bearded vulture, and Himalayan snowcock. Additionally, it is home to several species of fish, including the marinka, which is found only in the rivers of the Tian Shan Mountains.

Ala Archa National Park is the perfect nature get away. Ala Archa National Park is conveniently located just a short drive from Bishkek, making it an easily accessible destination. Locals mostly come in the weekends to have a picknick and make leisurely walks along the rivers.

My experience in Ala Archa National Park

I decided to go to Ala Archa National Park on a weekend in June. It was already getting pretty warm in Bishkek and finding some cooler air in the mountains was just what I needed.

I took the marshrutka that conveniently left me at the park gate. From here it was still another 12 kilometers to the Alplager where the hiking trails start. It was immediately clear that it was weekend. Although hitchhiking is pretty common in Kyrgyzstan most cars were stuffed with people, barbecues and food.

I ended up taking a taxi to the Alplager. I wanted to make an easy hike and therefore opted for the Ala Archa river trail to the right. In the beginning I met lots of big families having a picnic. I could smell the meat that was sizzling on the barbecues. Some families waved at me and I am sure that if I had stopped I would have been invited over.

I wasn’t here to party though and really wanted to be in nature. The further I got into the park, the more quiet it became and soon it was just me, the river and the mountains. The landscape of Ala archa National Park reminded me a lot of the Langtang trek and Poon hill trek in Nepal due to the lush and green forests.

It was a lovely day and before I knew it I had to get back to catch the last minivan to Bishkek.

Things to do in Ala Archa National Park

Hiking to ak sai waterfall.

After the Alpger hotel there are two trails you can take. To the right is the easygoing Ala Archa river trail and to the left the more challenging hike to the Ak Sai waterfall.

This hike is around 5 kilometers and follows a ridge above the river. It takes about 2 to 3 hours before you reach the waterfall. An excellent day hike that involves some steep ascents. Here is an excellent post that goes through the Ak sai waterfall trail step by step.

Hiking to Ak sai glacier

After Ak sai waterfall the trail goed further up to Ratzek hut and Ak Sai glacier. Only for those that are really fit it is possible as a daytrip, but you will enjoy the hike to Ak sai glacier much more if you stay the night at Ratzek hut.

From Ak Sai waterfall to Ratzek hut it is a steep climb as you go from 2800 meter to 3300 meter. It takes between 3 to 4 hours. There is no need for a guide, because the trail is quite obvious. Look out for the white blue trail marks.

If you camp at Ratzek hut you do need to bring your own camping gear and enough food and water for 2 days. There are some bunk beds at Ratzek hut as well, but you still need your own sleeping bag. You can check this post from Moon & Honey travel for their experience hiking the Ak Sai glacier trail .

Hiking trails to Ak sai waterfall and glacier

Hiking the Ala Archa river trail

The Ala Archa river trail, also called Ala Archa valley trail, is the easiest hike to follow in Ala Archa National Park and the one that I did. It is only 2 kilometers and takes about one hour one way.

You can continue for another 8 kilometer to reach an abandoned Soviet ski resort and even further up to some glaciers. I must admit that I didn’t get that far, but you can read a post here from someone that did.

Ala Archa National Park river trail

Pik Komsomolets

Climbing Peak Komsomolets is an annual tradition on the first of May that is known as the Alpinada festival. Every year hundreds of people get up early to climb the 4200 meter young communist peak.

All kinds of people join this event. From children to old ladies. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, because you will have to ascend more than 2000 meters. As a tourist it’s best to join the Trekkers Union of Kyrgyzstan if you want to join this yearly festival.

Adygene valley

The trail into the Adygene valley is about 300 meters back from the Alplager. This path sees much less visitors and is way more quiet, but certainly not less beautiful. The steep 7 kilometer hike ends at the Adygene glacier and takes about 3 to 4 hours.

Ala Archa National Park Travel Tips

Do i need a guide in ala archa national park.

No, you do not need a guide in Ala Archa national park, unless you are really going to try to climb one of the peaks. The trails I mentioned in this post are quite obvious and marked. As long as you bring enough food and water with you, you will be fine on your own.

If you prefer not to hike alone I can recommend the Trekkers union of Kyrgyzstan . They organize very cheap hiking tours to several places around Bishkek including Ala Archa National Park.

Where to eat in Ala Archa National Park

At the Alplager is a rather overpriced restaurant and some shops that sell snacks and water. However, the choices are limited, because most locals bring everything along for their extensive barbecue picnics. Apparently live animals as well and the park has now put up signs that it is not allowed to kill sheep on the premises of the park.

In short, it is best to bring enough food and water with you from Bishkek. Consider bringing a water filter to fill up your water bottle in the rivers.

Where to sleep in Ala Archa National Park

At the Alplager are two options to stay. The moderately priced Alplager hotel and the cheaper Ala Archa hotel . Both are nothing to write home about. It is better to stay in Bishkek, unless you really want to guarantee yourself an early start on the trails.

If you want to do the Ak Sai glacier hike you can sleep at Ratzek hut that is at the foot of the glacier. The basic hut has dorm bunk beds where you will need your own sleeping bag. Also bring your own food and water.

You can also choose to stay in Bishkek and visit Ala archa National Park on a day trip. Bishkek has lots of affordable accomodation options. From backpackper hostels to appartments and bed and breakfasts. I recommend the options below

Bishkek : Chinar Apart hotel , Apple hostel & Sakura guesthouse

When to visit Ala Archa National Park

Summer from June till September is without doubt the best time to visit Ala Archa National Park, especially if you plan to do high altitude hikes. Just keep in mind that it is much cooler in the mountains than in Bishkek. Even in summer its important to bring some warm clothes with you.

Spring and Autumn are also a great time, especially if you are taking the easier Ala Archa river trail or go to the Ak Sai waterfall. In autumn the fall colours give an extra bonus and in spring the blooming wild flowers.

As you can imagine, winter brings a lot of snow which can compromise your hiking plans. However, the snow in Ala Archa has its own beauty and you can still visit the park to enjoy the magical winter wonderland. The locals do so too and you can still find families having a picnic with tea and vodka to keep warm.

Check this post from Sunrise Odyssey about what it is like to hike in the snow in Ala Archa .

How to get to Ala Archa National Park

The best and easiest way to get to Ala Archa National Park is by arranging a private taxi to bring you there and come pick you up again at an agreed time. Expect to pay between 3000 and 4000 som for this. If you can find other people in your hostel to share the costs with it is not that expensive

It is not possible to reach the Alplager by public transport, but you can use a combination of bus and hitchhiking to get there. Marshrutka 265 leaves regularly from Osh bazaar to the village of Kashka Suu for 30 som. For a small extra fee you can ask the driver to bring you a bit further to the park entrance.

From there you can either organize a taxi for the next 12 kilometers to the Alplager or try to hitchhike. especially in the weekends, it gets pretty busy and it is not too difficult to find a ride.

Sustainable Travel in Ala Archa National Park

Although Ala Archa National Park is still an off the beaten path destination, tourism is increasing. The trails become more crowded and pollution is a growing problem. Traveling sustainably to Ala Archa is essential to minimize your environmental impact and preserve the area’s natural beauty for future generations.

Leave no trace principle : When hiking in Ala Archa National Park, stick to designated trails to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem. Straying off the marked paths can cause soil erosion and damage to plant life. If you are lucky enough to spot wildlife, observe quietly from a distance to prevent disruption to their habitats and help maintain their natural behaviors.

I encourage you to take all your trash back with you and dispose of it responsibly. In other words, leave no trace of your visit. Even better is when you bring something to pick up any of the trash that other people left behind.

To avoid single-use plastics, invest in reusable items. For example, you can bring your own water bottle with a filter. At last, use biodegradable and eco-friendly personal care products to minimize pollution of water sources.

Respect the culture : Besides environmental concerns it is also important to be sensitive of the community’s way of life. Kyrgyzstan is an Islamic country with a nomadic culture that is just opening up to tourism. Therefore, learn about the local customs and traditions beforehand and be mindful of your behavior.

People will appreciate it, if you dress modestly. Learning a few basic phrases in Kyrgyz or Russian, can go a long way in building meaningful connections and to learn more about the local culture. Not everybody is happy to have their picture taken. When in doubt, ask permission.

8 wild and beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan

The Central Asian nation’s rugged landscapes and unique heritage make it a can’t-miss destination.

The cities of Kyrgyzstan are filled with Soviet-style buildings, sprawling markets, and ornate mosques. However, outside of the bustling, metropolitan streets of Bishkek and Osh, wonder awaits: A journey deeper into the wilder parts of Kyrgyzstan treats the senses with turquoise alpine lakes, towering snowcapped peaks, and sweeping walnut forests. ( See photos of beautiful, underground train stations in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. )

Today, Kyrgyzstan’s rugged landscapes, unique nomadic heritage, and fascinating Silk Road history attract outdoor adventurers and culture enthusiasts alike. Read on to learn about eight of the country’s most spectacular spots.

Ala Archa National Park

Just 25 miles outside Bishkek , Ala Archa National Park’s striking gorge is one of the most beloved nature areas in Kyrgyzstan.

In Kyrgyz, ala archa refers to the variegated juniper trees that adorn the canyon in every direction. Traditionally, Kyrgyz people use juniper to protect homes and ward off evil spirits. In Ala Archa, they’re a backdrop for a variety of year-round outdoor adventure activities, including hiking, trekking, and skiing.

From Bishkek, hire a taxi or rent a car for the 30-minute drive to the park entrance. Once inside, take advantage of the trails, lodge, and seasonal recreational areas. ( Read about five Central Asian destinations that deserve more travelers. )

Lake Kol Suu

In the high-altitude region near the Chinese border, an alpine lake hides between craggy rock formations. Water from the nearby snowcapped peaks drains down into Kol Suu’s wide basin during the summer, creating its vibrant turquoise color. Its sheer isolation—and the juxtaposition of sparkling blue water against sandy rock—make Lake Kol Suu such an alluring destination.

Given its remote location, it’s fairly challenging to reach. Hire a knowledgeable local guide from the nearby city of Naryn to drive the four-hour journey over bumpy, unpaved roads, finishing the last leg on foot or horseback. Near the lake, you can stay in a yurt camp or pitch your own tent.

To the south, Lenin Peak straddles the Tajik border. The second highest summit in the country, with a maximum altitude above 23,000 feet, permanently snowcapped Lenin Peak is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most iconic mountains.

A few groups of experienced hikers attempt to climb it each year, but even those who don’t wish to summit can hike to the Lenin Peak Base Camp or explore the surrounding hills and valleys. Book a driver or tour from Osh, Sary Tash, or Sary Mogul. Local community-based tourism offices can also organize a yurt stay at one of the camps at the foot of the mountains. ( Read more: this ancient Silk Road city is now a modern marvel. )

What sets Arslanbob apart from Kyrgyzstan’s other mountain regions is its 11,000-hectare walnut forest, the largest in the world. The walnut forests, which originally drew settlers to Arslanbob in the third century B.C., have provided a major Kyrgyz export since the time of Alexander the Great. Today, the region draws thousands of tourists from around the world.

Situated between the Fergana and Chatkal mountain ranges in western Kyrgyzstan, Arslanbob hosts visitors to celebrate an annual walnut harvest in late September or early October. The region is also home to picturesque waterfalls, hiking trails, and centuries-old Muslim tombs. To reach Arslanbob, take a marshrutka (a local minibus) from Jalal-Abad or Osh. From Arslanbob’s town center, hire a local guide to show you around the hiking trails and attractions within the forest.

Lake Ala-Kul

More than 11,000 feet above sea level, Ala-Kul is a picturesque alpine lake in the snowcapped Terskey Alatau range. Today, it’s one of Kyrgyzstan’s most popular trekking destinations thanks to its accessibility from the nearby city of Karakol and proximity to massive Lake Issyk-Kul.

Lake Ala-Kul can only be reached on foot by a steep hike that typically takes more than one day to complete. Travelers can reach the Ala-Kul trailhead by public transportation from Karakol, or by riding a horse to the base of the final ascent. Most travelers pair a trip to Ala-Kul with a post-hike soak in the nearby hot springs in the valley of Altyn Arashan.

Tash Rabat is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most well-preserved Silk Road caravanserais , important waypoints that served as marketplaces, educational institutions, and inns for traders along the route. Constructed in a remote valley between the At-Bashi Mountains in southern Kyrgyzstan, Tash Rabat’s isolation enhances its beauty. While tourists can enter the caravanserai for a small fee, the more spectacular views are from the surrounding hills overlooking the area, and a few hiking trails that lead to Chatyr-Kul, a massive lake and nature reserve area. ( Join a journalist walking around the world as he embarks on the Silk Road leg of his trip. )

The unpaved roads to Tash Rabat can be difficult to navigate, so it’s best to hire a local driver through the community-based tourism office in nearby Naryn. To extend your trip, pair it with a trip to Kol Suu Lake or spend a night in the Tash Rabat yurt camp.

Skazka Canyon

On the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul lies an otherworldly, colorful canyon with striking, jagged rock formations, formed from millennia of ice, water, and wind erosion. Skazka Canyon —meaning “fairytale” in Russian—is the subject of many local legends. Its central rock ridge resembles a dragon’s spine, with two parallel, vertical rock faces surrounding its main trail.

To get to Skazka Canyon, follow signs from the main road on the south shore of Issyk Kul, near the village of Kaji-Sai. Hoping to spend more time? Take advantage of the yurt camps near the canyon’s entrance.

Bokonbayevo

A small, traditional Kyrgyz village located near the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, Bokonbayevo is a great home base for multiday treks and horse-riding excursions exploring the Terskey Alatau Mountains. It’s also home to one of Kyrgyzstan’s most important traditions: eagle sports. Salburun hunters have trained their eagles along Issyk-Kul’s southern shore for centuries, and today showcase their heritage at the annual Birds of Prey Festival .

Getting to Bokonbayevo is straightforward: You can take a direct marshrutka from Bishkek or Karakol. There are plenty of guesthouses in Bokonbayevo’s town center, plus a tourism office where you can hire a local guide for treks into nearby nature areas.

In the morning after pickup from your hotel we’ll head to Ala Archa straight away.

Bishkek - Ala Archa

The road will take us about 50 minutes. Once we get to the park you’ll be given a pair of trekking poles to start the hike with your guide at the foot of mountains. Our aim is to reach the Ak Sai waterfall (4km) or if it seems too long for you, the Broken Heart point (2km). Along the laid trail to the destination you’ll have some stops to enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains, coniferous forests and a river. Once we reach the waterfall you’ll have some time up there to walk around and take some stunning pictures. Descending down. Return to Bishkek.

Ala Archa - Bishkek

On the way back to the city we're inviting you to have a complimentary lunch at a national restaurant just to get a slight idea of the Kyrgyz cuisine. That’s gonna be delicious, we bet! Drop off at your hotel upon arrival in Bishkek. End of the tour. Have a beautiful evening!

Ala-Archa gorge

Description.

Ala-Archa Gorge

Ala Archa Mountaineering Camp is located in the gorge with the same name, 45 km south from the capital city of Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), at the altitude of 2100 m in a broad and rather spacious part of Ala Archa gorge.

Ala Archa means “colorful juniper” in Kyrgyz. The name is given for the abundant juniper bushes and trees growing on the slopes of Ala Archa gorge.

The gorge is situated in the central, the highest area of Kyrgyz Ridge (Tien Shan Mountains). This area is occupied by the glaciers stretching 200 km along the ridge. One of the spurs lying to the north from the ridge is the most attractive for the expert mountaineers as it is considered to be the highest in the region. Here are located such peaks as Dvurogoya Peak (4380 m), Korona Peak (4860 m) and Semenov Tien Shanskiy Peak (4875 m) (the last is the highest in the ridge). There are most difficult routes (5th) in the area.

You may ascent Bailyan Bashi Peak following the easiest route from south-east (2-B), traversing the peak is estimated as 4-A. If you start traversing Bailyan Bashi from the 5th summit on the north-western wall your route is estimated as 5-B. Route to Dvurogaya Peak is of 4-B grade. Numerous routes are going to Korona Peak.

To Semenov Tien Shanski and Skryabin Peaks there are routes of 3-A and 3-B grades, traversing of them grades as 4-B. To the north from Skryabin Peak Ala Archa crest is divided into Baychechekey and Uchitel spurs. The northern most peak of Uchitel spur is Pioneer Peak (4050 m) with routes of 1-A (from south) and 2-A (from north) grades.

From Bailyan Bashi Peak Ak Sai crest is stretching to the west and further to the north-west with many interesting summits. One of them is Teketor Peak (4441 m). The most difficult peak for ascending is considered Svobodnaya Korea Peak (4740 m). This peak has very abrupt rocky walls on the northern side. The easiest way to ascend it is south-eastern route (4-B). Routes going along the eastern spur with ascent the peak on south-eastern wall or on north-western wall are graded as 5-A. If you ascend the peak on northern wall the rout is 5-B.

Adeguine Glacier is the good spot for training of the beginning mountaineers. Here there are more than ten peaks with routes of 1-3 grades like Adeguine Peak (4404m), Electro Peak (4090 m), Panfilov Peak (4300 m), Djilamysh Bashi Peak (4150 m),Smena Peak (4200 m), Savator Bashi Peak (4200 m), Shubina Peak (4200 m), and Kirova Peak (4200 m).

In Ala Archa Mountaineering Camp there is a new hotel with comfortable rooms with all conveniences and more budget hotel with rooms where bathroom is shared.

At the distance of 4-5 hours trekking from the mountaineering camp on the way to Ak Sai glacier at the altitude of 3400 m there is a hut which is called “Light House” and Ratseka camping. This is the most convenient place for the base camp in the area. Ratseka place is very warm and comfortable for relaxing after ascents. You also may stay in the hut itself. All the most attractive peaks in the area are situated quite close to that base camp!
