Christian Cruises
At CruiseMapper's Christian Cruises dedicated page you can compare Christian-themed cruise travel vacations by line and destination. See what are the best Christian cruise lines and what their ships have to offer you as themes and itineraries schedule (departure dates and ports). This article is integrated with Cruises to Holy Land and our Theme Cruises hub.
Although not cheap, Christian cruise vacations for families have all the chances to become one of your family's best spiritual getaways! No matter if it's a ministry-organized group voyage, or just a family vacation focused on Christian values, "Christian Cruises" as themed voyages are a wonderful vacation option. On these, you can do both - indulge in the pampering elements of the cruise ship vacation, and satisfy your spiritual needs.
Christian Cruise Travel
If you are on a vacation budget, a ship cruise is among the best all-inclusive packages- everything is included and pre-planned. This simplifies packing and travel, enhancing your relaxation.
What is a Christian Cruise?
"Christian Cruises" incorporate inspirational speakers, teaching seminars, spiritual entertainment. These are the spots to find like-minded people, worship and pray as you sail. There are different types of Christian cruise deals. Some include Senior, Family, Couples and Singles Cruises.
The typical length of Christian Cruises varies from three up to eight days; their average cost ranges from $400 and up.
- Pros - unforgettable spiritual voyages of a lifetime; all trip essentials included in one price; family-friendly environment and entertainment.
- Cons - High cost of the vacation packages; not freestyle cruises- dress code may be uncomfortable for some guests; no variety in entertainment (particularly musical entertainment).
Many Christian Cruises are organized by a specific ministry or church organizations. They often opt for specialized themes, the most popular of which include:
- Music cruises with popular Christian artists' songs;
- Christian college cruises;
- Ministerial voyages for church leadership figures;
- Christian destination vacations that visit religious sites or trace Bible routes (Israel being among the world's most visited);
- Specialized denomination voyages, planned to appeal to Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, other Christianity sects;
- Couples and Singles cruises which give members an opportunity to connect with people who share their faith;
- Family voyages (mother and daughter) that unite families with Christian ideals and values.
Christian cruise ship activities
In addition to the inclusions of a typical cruise price (fine dining, games, entertainment), "Christian Cruises" provide a variety of activities. This way Christian passengers enjoy fellowship with other guests. Remember that group cruises do not usually require passengers' participation in any set number activities. There are options for everyone to try something fun that will help meet other individuals sharing the same religious beliefs. Each themed Christian cruise is quite different, but the typical onboard activities include:
- Welcome receptions and Bible study
- Worship services and Seminars on different religious topics
- Christian themed games; Christian entertainment (Christian musicians, speakers, comedians)
- Specialized shore excursions to famous religious sites, churches, temples.
- Social activities (dances, slumber parties, group photographs, elegant receptions on formal nights).
How to choose between Christian cruise lines?
A large number of travel agencies plan regular Christian Cruises. A single agency only offers a few voyages each year. But if you investigate different travel agents, you will be able to find the voyage that appeals to you exactly. The most popular agencies, offering Christian cruise vacations are:
- All Christian Cruises
- Bountiful Travel
- Christian Travel Finder
- Inspiration Cruises
- Matter of the Heart
- Premier Experience
- Temptation Tours
Christian cruise line ships have limited offers on Christian themed cruises per year. But they all sail to some of the world's most beautiful places! Usually, themed cruise deals are traded via themed travel agencies. Some travel agencies schedule a popular itinerary. Others vary destinations so that travelers have more options. Consider the following factors when you choose between all the "Christian cruise lines":
- Cruise line/operator. The ones that frequently host themed Christian voyages are Carnival Cruise Line , Princess Cruises , Royal Caribbean International , Holland America, though other lines participate as well.
- Destinations/itinerary. Christian themed cruises often include vacations to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Bahamas. Another very popular destinations are Mexico and Hawaii. Very special Mediterranean itineraries are the so-called "Holy Land Cruises"- to visit Israel, Egypt, Greece, and Turkey in one package deals.
- Denomination. There are voyages focused on appealing to a specific sect. Others are appealing to all Christians.
- Activity options. Carefully investigate the activities when you choose a Christian cruise- find those appealing to you. Some Christian music artists are popular for ones, but other passengers may prefer a quieter voyage.
Themed Christian cruise tours
If you are unable to find the ideal Christian cruise for your own vacation plans, work through the local church. There are lots of pre-planned Christian voyages available, but not every Christian likes to be involved in a structured getaway. Don't bother- it is easy to plan a Christian cruise on your own. The benefits of cruise vacations include the appeal of having meals, accommodations, travel, and destinations- all included in a single fare. There are also many activities provided, which appeal to all ages. Read the following tips which will add some spirituality to your Christian themed traveling experience:
- Designate time for worship and prayer. Modern cruise ships offer small chapels; there are also many quiet places onboard suitable for a small group.
- Avoid cruise ship's vices. Your personal behavior can be Christ-like everywhere, no matter where the voyage may be.
- Choose educational tours. Instead of indulging on board, discover God's wonders in different destinations.
Christian cruise lines deals present the unique option for physically, mentally, and spiritually refreshing themed travel vacations. Choose preplanned theme cruises specific to your faith or just focus on spirituality while on vacation. Christian cruises offer something for everyone! Book today and get the best cabin locations and rates! Find out more from our selected Christian vacations below.

- Depart to Rome
Depart San Francisco or New York this morning for Rome. You can also arrange your own airfare and take our air credit.
- May 10, 2025
We will arrive in Rome this morning. Upon arrival, if taking our group transfer, you will stop and walk a bit on the Via Appia, the same street that Paul walked on as he entered Rome. After we check into our hotel, we will walk to Trevi Fountain and then back to our hotel for a casual dinner.
- May 11, 2025
- Ancient Rome/Board Ship
This morning we visit the spectacular Coliseum of Rome, the Forum, the Mamertine Museum where Paul and Peter were imprisoned, and then make our way to the ship. Our first dinner together is this evening!
- May 12, 2025
- Day at Sea with Bible Study
An entire day spent at sea. Sleep in this morning and enjoy the ship’s wonderful surroundings with a walk around the pool deck and breakfast at the huge outdoor buffet. Meet together from 3:00PM to 5:00PM for a study of Paul’s time in Rome today. Dinner with the group or at your leisure.
- May 13, 2025
- Santorini, Greece
Morning study together on the top deck focused on studying Paul’s second time in Rome, this time as a prisoner. Lunch aboard the ship and then the ship will drop anchor at the lovely island of Santorini. Your time here is at your leisure. The best thing to do in Santorini is to take the fast cable car to the top of Fira town and then grab a beautiful place to see one of the most beautiful views on earth. You can also take a beach visit, take a taxi around the island, shop, or even take a snorkel tour. An adventure that previous travelers have thoroughly enjoyed is a four-wheeler tour of the island! You do not have to re-board the ship until 11:00PM this evening!
- May 14, 2025
This is the site of Paul’s first letter to the churches in the Book of Revelation. Archeologically, it is considered the pearl of the Mediterranean, as it is the most magnificent archeological site. It is so easy to visit, yet it is full of Biblical truths. Ephesians 1:1-2, and Acts 19 will come alive. Especially compelling is the remaining Temple to Diana or Artemis that is still standing today. In addition, you will sit in the theatre where the Apostle Paul gave one of his most compelling sermons. You will walk the same streets that Jesus’ mother Mary walked and where the Apostle John spent much of his time. Ephesus is only 35 miles from Smyrna and only a 5-hour boat trip to the island of Patmos where John received the Book of Revelation. The day will be very memorable we will end it with a sumptuous Turkish farm meal and lively carpet demonstration. You will have plenty of time to shop and perhaps have a coffee along the waterfront.
We reboard our ship for dinner and sail on past the tiny islands where the Early Church first took root.
- May 15, 2025
This is “the” vacation island destination for Greek families. It is considered to be their “Maui.” You will have so much to do here! You can rent bicycles, grab a towel and hit the beach, meander the dozens of quaint streets filled with shoppers and holiday seekers, or take a trip outside of town to see how the Greeks utilize farming successfully on the islands. This is a day of relaxation for you. For those of you who return early (4:30PM), we will have a study together on the Early Church and Judaism within these islands.
- May 16, 2025
Another glorious day at sea. If you are up to it, we will have fellowship and worship on the aft top deck before breakfast. We will also get together again this afternoon at 4:30PM for another teaching on Paul’s final journey that took place in the waters we will be passing through and his amazing shipwreck that took place in Acts 27. It is a riveting story and we will be able to trace its steps while aboard ship and discuss the many things that transpired during Paul’s life.
- May 17, 2025
- Naples/Optional Pompeii and Puteoli Tour
Today you can step off the ship and enjoy the city where Pizza was invented or join our optional full-day tour which visits the small port of Puteoli where Paul arrived for his evangelistic church planting, his imprisonment, and, finally, his death. We will also visit the amazing site of Pompeii today. It is a city of decadence that was caught in a volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 BC. We return to the ship for our farewell dinner together.
- May 18, 2025
The ship arrives at 5:00AM. Those not taking the Athens and Corinth post-tour extension and who have taken the group air program will receive an airport transfer to the Rome FCO airport this morning. Flights back to New York and San Francisco arrive the same day.
TRIP EXTENSION:
- Vatican, Pantheon, Athens
Disembark the ship this morning and you have an appointment at St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Vatican, and the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. After your visit, we take a walking tour of the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and then have free time at the Spanish Steps. Transfer to the airport for your 5:00PM flight to Athens. Upon arrival in Athens, we drive towards the Aegean Sea for our lovely boutique hotel.
- May 19, 2025
Enjoy breakfast this morning and then we depart for Ancient Corinth. We will be visiting both Upper and Lower Corinth with a great view of Acro Corinth. We will then visit a rarely-visited spot called Cencherea where the Apostle Paul took his Nazarite vow on the beach. We’ll be provided with a lovely lunch in the countryside and then we transfer into the bustling city of Athens. Once in Athens and checked into our hotel, we will walk to the oldest section of Athens called Plaka. Here we will have an outdoor dinner together.
- May 20, 2025
- Athens, Mars Hill
This morning we will first visit Mars Hill. It is at Mars Hill that the Apostle Paul said these words Men of Athens: “You worship many idols but you don’t even know the real God.” Acts 17:22-31. Then we will walk up the Acropolis to the Parthenon. Our teaching will discuss how the faith of many Greeks today is due to the applied wisdom of the Apostles through the Word that was given to them. This afternoon you will have some free time to either visit the Archeological Museum or enjoy the quaint streets of Plaka very near our hotel. We will have a farewell dinner overlooking the Parthenon this evening.
- May 21, 2025
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the airport. Flights will return to San Francisco and New York the same day.
Worship Leader, Playwright, Director, Actor, Teacher, and Retired Peace Officer California
Randy was gifted with an incredible singing voice which he first used singing solo in the 2 nd grade at the Christian school spring concert. God continued to use his voice as a worship leader for over 30 years at three different churches which included numerous TV and radio appearances. In addition to his position as a worship leader, Randy also served as a Sunday School teacher, board member, writer, director, and actor in a passion play entitled “Crucify” which ministered to thousands over the course of many years, resulting in a great harvest of converts and recommitments to Christ.
With strong convictions to never personally receive a salary for doing God’s work Randy was employed as a Peace Officer for 27 years at a corrections facility in San Luis Obispo, California. As Randy has stated, “God sent me to prison to shine a light in a very dark and needed place.” A member of the Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers, Randy led Bible studies after hours at the prison and courageously led prayer at the flagpole.
What Randy won’t boast about, is his heart for the Lord and his passion for the people. He humbly serves the Lord with such a gentle ministering spirit and everyone who meets him is touched by his kindness and caring. He strives to live with a Job-like countenance, rising early to seek the Lord and spending time in prayer. He is an absolute joy to be around and will be a blessing to travel with.
Randy married his childhood sweetheart Sue at the age of 20 and recently they celebrated their 48 th anniversary. With 3 children and 8 grandchildren, all faithfully serving the Lord they are truly blessed. While recently talking to one of his grandsons about traveling around the world his grandson stated “Grandpa, you know you are getting old, right? Are you sure you should be traveling?” God has a wonderful way of keeping us humble. Randy said he is looking forward to meeting you all.
This Bible-focused cruise and tour will be fully hosted onboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. While this is a large ship, the beauty of it is that we will have all of the amenities of a large vessel, the pools, the numerous restaurants, the spas, the shows, the full services of a concierge, room service, work out facilities, walking and running tracks, numerous options on cabin type and so many more benefits, yet at the same time we will have the intimacy of a study group with a teaching pastor that will shepherd us through the journeys of Paul – geographically, scripturally and personally within our group. The beauty of this type of study trip is that you will depart with forever friends and an amazing personal first-hand experience in the places where the Apostle Paul was enriched by the Holy Spirit. We will be the recipients of this treasure as we walk the streets of ancient Greece, Ephesus, Rome, and Puteoli. We hope you can join us!

A Guide to Christian Cruises
Christian cruises have really taken off in popularity the past few years. A Christian cruise is where an agency rents out the entire ship for a cruise, offers Christian entertainment while the casino is closed and no alcohol is served. This creates a nice Christian atmosphere that has lead to their popularity. These cruises often cost 2-3 times the normal price of the cruise. If you are interested in going on one, don’t wait until the last minute, many are sold out months in advance.
It is worth noting that some of these cruises do not charter the entire ship, so alcohol is served and the casino is open. If you are able to book the same cruise directly through the cruiseline, then the ship is not chartered.
There are several different cruises that bring in national singing groups and popular Christian pastors and speakers to speak during the cruise. The cruises are generally the 4 day trip to the Bahamas and take place in the winter, because who doesn’t want to get away from the cold and head to the Bahamas in February? However, there are Christian cruises through the year that visit ports in Mexico, Alaska, and throughout the Caribbean that are a week long.

Influencer reveals ‘horrible’ 18 hours on ultimate world cruise: ‘a cult’.
Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Aussie comedian Christian Hull has revealed what it’s really like on-board the world’s most famous ship — the Ultimate World Cruise .
The nine-month long cruise has captivated TikTok users after passengers took to the platform to share their experiences with many “living” for the insane content, including Christian.
He has been following the drama of those on-board ever since the Royal Caribbean cruise set sail in December last year.
The 37-year-old had become so invested and “sucked in” that he decided to experience it for himself, hopping on the viral cruise during its stopover in Brisbane on March 11.
Christian, who is a first-time cruiser, is 11 days into his 16-day journey that ends in Hong Kong and let’s just say he’s had a whirlwind and “overwhelming” adventure.
@christianmhull Ready to find out how simple, tasty, & cheap the Ultimate World Cruise really is? @EveryPlate.AU is everything you need for dinner, and nothing you don’t, delivered to your door. And prices start from as little as $2.19 per plate! For $180 off your first 5 boxes, use the code PINAPPLE ♬ original sound – Christian Hull
“When I pulled into the Port of Brisbane, I wasn’t expecting the cruise ship to be there and I just screamed — I was so excited,” he told news.com.au from his room.
But unfortunately for him, the first 18 hours were spent hugging the toilet seat due to motion sickness.
“I was at dinner and everyone was so lovely but I couldn’t listen to a single thing they were saying because I felt every rocking motion. I got the sweats and started burping,” he laughed.
“I didn’t want to be rude and sat there as long as I could [but] I had to bolt to my room to throw up in the toilet.”
“To be fair I did not prepare — you’re meant to take sea sickness pills before you get on the cruise because once it starts there’s no going back.”
Christian said the journey out of Brisbane was wild with massive swells. He even recorded a TikTok to show just how much the mammoth 13-deck ship was swaying when faced with rough waters.
“When you feel it shudder like that it means the boat is hitting a wave, the bow of it is coming up and as it comes down it forces the water out. Oh My God, the waves,” he laughed as he looked out the window.
Christian boasts almost 2 million TikTok followers and has been filming his journey on-board the Ultimate World Cruise, including several clips of himself unwell from motion sickness .
One of them showed him running from dinner to his room to throw up.
It was followed by another clip of him having purchased a ReliefBand, which he said “sends electronic pulses into your wrist, then pulses into your brain and counteracts feelings of nausea”.
“I was feeling horrible yesterday and soon as I put it on, immediately [after] that pulse started it was there weirdest feeling. The feeling of wanting to vomit disappeared instantly,” he said.
“I still felt a little dizzy and the rocking motion still played with me mentally, but this removed the nausea.”
Christian said that most people who do a cruise for the first time find it “full on”.
But after getting his sea sickness under control, Christian said he’s been having a great time meeting some of the “wonderful people” who’s journey’s he’s followed online.
“Cruising is a cult and the people on this cruise are on top of cult chain,” he laughed.
He said the most wildest gossip to come out of the cruise so far is that “there’s swingers on board”.
“[But] it’s all on the downlow,” he said. “I’m not shocked at all. You’re on board this ship for nine-months … you go stir-crazy.
“I had a great conversation with a fellow cruiser who has done a nude cruise and swingers cruise before and they told me some crazy stories.”
He’s also encountered some overwhelming moments telling news.com.au that’s he’s cried and been in fetal position twice.
@christianmhull The overwhelming nature of the Ultimate World Cruise got to me last night. Im having an amazing time its just nothing how I expected. The people im surrounding myself with are absolutely beautiful. Turns out I just need to force myself to get out of my room and start enjoying myself. In tonights podcast you will get to hear the full meltdown and my review of karaoke. Its called ‘16 Days on the Ultimate World Cruise’ on Spotify & Apple #UltimateWorldCruise ♬ original sound – Christian Hull
“I am learning a lot about myself,” he said, adding it’s the first time he’s travelled solo since he was 17.
“I’ve learned a lot about who I am as a person, in a weird way. [But] the biggest thing I have learnt is a cruise ship is the most overwhelming and over stimulating place on earth,” he laughed.
Christian had initially forked out $20,000 to pay for his ticket, but was lucky enough to score a partnership with EveryPlate who covered the costs.
His content is raw and honest, which is part of the reason he decided to collaborate with the Aussie meal kit subscription service.
“EveryPlate have been the dream team. Normally brands like to get their hands in and control things, but they have let me do my own thing.”
Christian has taken to TikTok to share the highs and lows of his trip, partnering with brand to share “what’s cooking” on-board the World Cruise.
“This is a cruise unlike any other. Some passengers have done hundreds in their time and they’ve jumped at the opportunity for something like this, for nine months.”
He said one of the things he is looking forward to the most when he’s back on land is tucking into EveryPlate meals, adding that while the food on-board the cruise isn’t bad, it’s “wreaking havoc with my digestion”.
Christian has a few days left on the ship where he will disembark in Hong Kong and continue his holiday for another week.

Meanwhile, the cruise will continue its journey for another six months exploring the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Europe.
Depending on the destination and room you choose, prices can vary from $US13,399 ($19,895) to $US25,099 ($37,268).
But, if you want to do the full nine months, the price tag is a lot heftier. The cheapest is $US59,999 ($88,000) for an interior stateroom, and up to $US760,000 ($1.2 million) per person for a Royal Suite.
Christian said a lot of the passengers are on it for the full nine months, adding it’s not something he could do.
Despite this, he said it’s provided for some entertaining viewing, and he’s excited to be part of it.
The epic nine-month-long holiday is a first-of-its-kind for the cruise liner, and they’re not surprised it’s gone viral on TikTok.
“Many guests booked their tickets over two to three years ago during the pandemic and we are thrilled to be hosting a range of guests from young solo travellers, to couples and families,” Dave Humpreys, director of sales at Royal Caribbean International AUNZ, recently told news.com.au.
“We have an impressive number of Gen-Z and millennial cruisers, with a significant number of guests between the ages of 18-30 joining us on various legs of this cruise.”
In total, the cruise will travel to more than 60 countries and 11 wonders of the world in 274 days.

Christian school teacher arrested for using ai to create child porn from yearbook photos.
A teacher at a Christian school in Florida has been arrested for allegedly taking yearbook photos and using artificial intelligence to create erotic materials and sexually explicit content featuring children.
Steven Houser, 67, of New Port Richey, will face charges for possession of child pornography, according to a statement published by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday.
Deputies began an investigation following an unspecified tip they received about Houser. The investigation uncovered that Houser, who worked as a third-grade science teacher at Beacon Christian Academy in New Port Richey, allegedly possessed two photos and three videos of child pornography.

Authorities confirmed that the images did not include students at the school.
It was discovered that Houser also had in his possession child erotic material generated using an AI computer program. Houser allegedly confessed to investigators that he took yearbook photos of three students to use for developing content with AI.
Court records reveal that Houser has been charged with five counts of felony possession of child pornography. He was held at the Land O’ Lakes Jail on $100,000 bail for each count. If convicted of committing a felony in the third degree , Houser could face up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 .
The sheriff’s office confirmed there were no reports of any additional victims. Pasco County authorities ask those who think they might know of other victims to contact their tip line at 1-800-706-2488 or visit pascosheriff.com/tips .
Across the nation, AI technology has become more popular, and in some cases, the tools have led to detrimental outcomes.
In another case , an arrest warrant was issued in February 2024 for a teacher at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic School in Louisville, Kentucky, who allegedly used Photoshop to transpose school yearbook pictures onto naked pictures of children and distribute them to other people.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky announced in early February that Jordan Fautz, 39, faced charges of distributing child pornography and distributing obscene visual representations of child sexual abuse.
If convicted, Fautz could spend five to 40 years in prison and be subject to a $250,000 fine and at least five years of supervised release.

Districts [ edit ]
The city is divided by the River Oka into two major parts: the Upper city ( Verkhnyaya or Nagornaya chast ) on the hilly right side and the Lower city ( Nizhnyaya or Zarechnaya chast — what literally means "the part over the river") on the left bank of the river. The Upper city is the old historical part of Nizhny Novgorod, whereas the Lower city is larger, newer and consists of more industrial districts.
Understand [ edit ]
History [ edit ]
The city was founded by Grand Duke George II of Russia in 1221 at the confluence of two most important rivers of his principality, the Volga and the Oka. Its name literally means Newtown the Lower , to distinguish it from the older Novgorod . A major stronghold for border protection, Nizhny Novgorod fortress took advantage of a natural moat formed by the two rivers.
Along with Moscow and Tver, Nizhny Novgorod was among several newly founded towns that escaped Mongol devastation on account of its insignificance and grew up into important centers of Russian political life during the period of Tatar yoke. For a short period of time it was the capital of the Suzdal Principality and competed with Moscow for the power in the region. However the competition with Moscow was lost and in 1392 the city was incorporated into Muscovy. Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was built in 1508-1511 (under supervision of the Italian fortress engineers) and became one of the strongest Russian citadels. There is a legend saying that the project was initially developed with participation of Leonardo da Vinci. However there is no documented proof of Leonardo's work for that project, the only thing the legend is based on is the striking resemblance of Leonardo's sketches and the actual Kremlin schemes. The fortress was strong enough to withstand Tatar sieges in 1520 and 1536.
In 1612, the so-called national militia , gathered by a local merchant Kuzma Minin and commanded by Knyaz Dmitry Pozharsky expelled the Polish troops from Moscow, thus putting an end to the Time of Troubles and establishing the rule of the Romanov dynasty.
In 1817, the Makaryev Monastery Fair, one of the liveliest in the world the 16th-18th centuries, was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, which thereupon started to attract numerous visitors and by the mid-19th century it turned Nizhny Novgorod into trade capital of the Russian Empire.
Under the Soviet period, the trade connections of the city were abandoned and Nizhny Novgorod became an important industrial centre instead. During the communist time the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. The physicist and the Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov was exiled there during 1980-1986 to limit his contacts with foreigners.
Climate [ edit ]
The climate in the region is humid continental and it is similar to the climate in Moscow , although colder in winter, which lasts from late November until late March with a permanent snow cover.
By car [ edit ]
Nizhny Novgorod is situated on the M7/E30 road. The road is in decent condition, although with traffic it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to drive to/from Moscow .
By boat [ edit ]
Turflot [dead link] , Infoflot , and many other companies operate multi-day river cruises down the Volga from early May to the end of September.
Many companies operate passenger boat service between Moscow and Astrakhan , with stops at most cities along the Volga River.
Get around [ edit ]
By foot [ edit ].
The city centre is compact and walkable. However, there are many inclines or steps from the river banks. The bridges are not pedestrian friendly since the sidewalk is very narrow and cars drive extremely fast close to the pedestrians.
By city rail [ edit ]
The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.
By bus and trolleybus [ edit ]
As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.
The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:
- The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
- The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
- The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)
By tram [ edit ]
Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.
By marshrutka [ edit ]
Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.
By bicycle [ edit ]
Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.
The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.
Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

- A big variety of other churches and convents.

Fourth ex-Mississippi officer sentenced to 40 years for abusing and torturing two Black men
JACKSON, Miss. — A former Mississippi law enforcement officer who pleaded guilty to abusing and torturing two Black men in 2023 was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison Wednesday.
U.S. District Court Judge Tom Lee imposed the sentence on former Rankin County deputy Christian Dedmon, 29, who received the longest prison term out of the other ex-"Goon Squad" officers who were sentenced. Dedmon devised the coverup scheme to cover up the involved officers' misconduct.
“You, Mr. Dedmon, committed the most egregious act. … That doesn’t mean the most egregious conduct of all the defendants (in) this case, but the most shocking, brutal and cruel acts imaginable. And you deserve to be punished for it,” Lee said.
Dedmon, along with five other law enforcement officers, pleaded guilty last year to felony charges that stemmed from a January 2023 incident with Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker. According to a Department of Justice 2023 news release, a group of six officers burst into a Rankin County home without a warrant. The officers assaulted Jenkins and Parker with stun guns and a sex toy, punched and kicked them, and called them racial slurs.
It was stated in court that Dedmon fired his gun during the incident, attempting to intimidate the victims.
Parker, who spoke for the first time in court, stated when he saw the officers walk through the door, he saw "the devil."
"I knew what it was when I saw them walk through the door but that night, I saw the devil come to me, in my face, in my home, where I was supposed to be safe. I was there helping a friend who was paralyzed," Parker said. "But you know, when you do good that’s when the devil comes. Maybe I was doing too good.”
Jenkins, via a statement read by his lawyer Malik Shabazz, told the court that the incident will "forever engraved" in his mind and heart.
“(Jan. 24) brings back bad memories for me. Deputy Dedmon is the worst example of a police officer in the United States of America. Deputy Dedmon was the most aggressive, most vicious, sickest and wickedest of those who attacked me,” Jenkins said. “Every time I try to take a bite of food, the pain reminds me of what happened that night. I want all of them to remain behind bars and to be off the streets.”
Before Dedmon’s sentencing was handed down, he provided a statement to the court.
“I want to tell Mr. Eddie and Mr. Jenkins how sorry I am for what they went through and going through. The lies I told them; I will never forgive myself for. If I could take everything back, I promise you I would. I got into law enforcement, not as a devil, (but) I really wanted to make a difference in my community,” Dedmon said. "I take full responsibility for what I’ve done. No one made me do the things that I have done."
The six former officers were Dedmon, Deputy Brett McAlpin, Lieutenant Jeffrey Middleton, Deputy Hunter Elward and Deputy Daniel Opdyke, who were all part of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, and Joshua Hartfield, who was a former Richland police officer.
Elward, 31, who shot one of the victims, was sentenced in federal court to 20 years in prison Tuesday morning. Shortly after, Middleton, 46, described as the group's ringleader, was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison .
Opdyke, 28, the third ex-Rankin County deputy, was sentenced Wednesday morning to 17.5 years in federal prison.
McAlpin and Hartfield are set to be sentenced Thursday.

Piety and Profanity: The Raunchy Christians Are Here
In the Trump era, a surprising number of evangelicals are rejecting modesty and turning toward the risqué.
By Ruth Graham
Ruth Graham is based in Dallas and writes about religion, faith and values.
The “Conservative Dad’s Real Women of America” 2024 pinup calendar features old-school images of sexiness — bikinis, a red sports car, a bubble bath.
The models are influencers and aspiring politicians familiar to the very online pro-Trump right. In one image, a BlazeTV host in a short skirt lights a copy of The New York Times on fire with a cigar. Another model, the former N.R.A. spokeswoman Dana Loesch, hoists two rifles.

Published by a “woke-free beer” company hastily launched last year as an alternative to Bud Light, the calendar was clearly meant to provoke liberals. But when photos of it began circulating online in December, progressives did not pay much attention. Instead, it sparked a heated squabble on the right over whether “conservative dads” who happen to be Christians should reject the calendar on moral grounds, or embrace it as an irreverent win for the good guys.
Allie Beth Stuckey, an evangelical commentator and podcaster, condemned the calendar as “soft porn” marketed to married men, and saw it as proof of growing polarization between Christian and secular conservatism. Other prominent Christian conservatives joined her in expressing their disgust.
But the calendar itself suggested that Christian and secular conservatism are not exactly as distinct as Ms. Stuckey and others might wish. The calendar’s cover model, Riley Gaines, a former college swimmer and activist against transgender women’s participation in women’s sports, frequently speaks at church events and evangelical conferences, and frames her cause as a “spiritual battle.”
In another image, a crucifix hangs prominently on the kitchen wall behind a woman in a tiny skirt, apron and platform heels. On the platform X, the model — Josie Glabach, who goes by “The Redheaded Libertarian” — said she was working to provide for her family, and defended her conservative bona fides in part by referring to her family’s Catholic faith. Using vividly vulgar language, she wrote that she doesn’t care “if the fact that I look hot doing any of it offends your senses.”
Such a debate would have been unimaginable at the turn of the millennium, when the best-known evangelical Christians in America were the evangelist Billy Graham, George W. Bush — the embodiment of establishment Republicanism — and Ned Flanders, a character on “The Simpsons” known for his cheerful prudery.
As a core faction in the Republican coalition, conservative evangelicals have long influenced the party’s policy priorities, including opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage. And the influence extended to conservative culture, where evangelical norms against vulgarity were rarely challenged in public.
In some ways, they remain intact. Most pastors don’t cuss from the pulpit, or at all. Mainstream conservative churches still teach their young people to save sex for marriage and avoid pornography.
Yet a raunchy, outsider, boobs-and-booze ethos has elbowed its way into the conservative power class, accelerated by the rise of Donald J. Trump, the declining influence of traditional religious institutions and a shifting media landscape increasingly dominated by the looser standards of online culture.
When Mr. Trump was elected president in 2016, winning the votes of about eight in 10 white evangelicals, many observers saw it as an essentially transactional relationship. Mr. Trump, a twice-divorced reality television star from New York City, had promised to appoint conservative judges and to defend Christian interests. But he rarely showed up in church, and he defended a recording of him bragging about grabbing women’s genitals as “locker-room banter.” He pitched himself as a protector, not a pious fellow traveler.
But it’s hard to remain fiercely loyal to a figure like Mr. Trump without being changed by him. Eight years after Mr. Trump first secured the Republican nomination for president, it’s clear that the aesthetics, the language and the borders of public morality in evangelical America are shifting.
“As with so many things with Trump, it’s a longer history, but he has also changed the game,” said Kristin Kobes Du Mez, a historian who has studied evangelicalism and masculinity. She cited gleefully combative talk radio of the 1990s as a touchstone in the coarsening of evangelical mores.
The shift is perhaps most visible in politics. Representative Lauren Boebert, who has called for an end to the separation of church and state, was caught on a theater security camera in September vaping and groping her date. (She later blamed her “public and difficult divorce” for her behavior, and said the behavior “fell short of my values.”) Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has embraced the label of “Christian nationalist,” drops vulgarities in hearings , on the House floor and in conversations with reporters .
Last summer, Nancy Mace, a Republican representative from South Carolina, joked about premarital sex and cohabitation, once obvious taboos, from the lectern at a Christian prayer breakfast in Washington. Praising the event’s host, Senator Tim Scott, she opened her talk by saying she had made a special effort to arrive early.
“When I woke up this morning at 7, I was getting picked up at 7:45, Patrick, my fiancé, tried to pull me by my waist over this morning in bed,” she told the audience, which included her pastor and Mr. Scott, an outspoken evangelical. “And I was like, ‘No, baby, we don’t got time for that this morning.’”
She added: “He can wait, I’ll see him later tonight.”
Ms. Mace later brushed off backlash to the remarks, writing on X that “I go to church because I’m a sinner not a saint!”
A New Set of Incentives
Well into the 21st century, conservative evangelicals maintained their reputation for strict standards within their own churches and schools around language and public displays of sexuality.
They did not avoid just profanity, but often also mild transgressions like “wuss” and “darn.” Evangelical Christian schools enforced strict dress codes focused on modesty, especially for girls. In the 1990s, teenagers attended conferences and wore “purity rings” to pledge their commitment to wait until they married to have sex.
There was a widespread agreement that the Bible was clear on these matters. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,” the Apostle Paul wrote in the New Testament book of Ephesians. And elsewhere: “Flee from sexual immorality” and “abstain from all appearance of evil.”
But for some conservative Christians, the stakes of the moment are now high enough that a certain amount of vulgarity is not just tolerated, but also required as a form of truth-telling worthy of the prophets. At a conference in Nashville in 2020 hosted by a right-wing Christian network, an Arizona pastor named Jeff Durbin described institutional evangelicals as captive to secular ideals, comparing them to “a slut who lies down in the middle of a burning city, spreading her legs to the rioters and looters.”
Most transgressions come not from the pulpit or the podium, but the keyboard. There was Jerry Falwell Jr., then the president of evangelical Liberty University, tweeting that pastors like David Platt, a prominent Virginia evangelical leader, need to “grow a pair.” He later deleted the tweet. ( Mr. Falwell resigned from Liberty in 2020 in the wake of a sex scandal).
The influential Idaho pastor and author Doug Wilson, whose profile has risen in the Trump era, casually uses vulgarities like “gaytards” online, and has used an obscenity on his blog in reference to a Lutheran pastor.
Some Christian conservatives argue that the degrading of expectations around crude language and sexual exhibitionism started on the cultural left and cannot be blamed on Mr. Trump.
“I consider Trump a product of the changes in the world,” said Aaron Renn, a conservative writer who has written about Mr. Trump’s appeal but admonished Christians to “ reject vice .”
After flirting with running for president for decades, Mr. Trump finally ran seriously in 2016 because “he sensed the world is different today, the old standards that meant someone” like Mr. Trump “would no longer be considered a viable candidate are no longer operative in society at large,” Mr. Renn said.
Others see the cause as partly technological. Evangelicalism is a decentralized movement, and has always embraced new technology as a way to reach more people. But the old institutions and personalities that defined the culture are fading: Church attendance has declined at the same time that several lions of the movement have died , retired or been felled by scandal . Influencers and outsiders have filled the vacuum.
Online, “the way you stand out is by being the most devoted, the most extreme in the cause,” said Jake Meador, editor in chief of the evangelical publication Mere Orthodoxy, who has been critical of the blurring of evangelical and secular standards.
“That creates totally different incentives,” he said, than the consensus-building of the era when a local church was the primary source of Christian authority and community.
‘Wholesome’ Lust
As for behavior in the bedroom itself, the old stereotype of the Christian prude belies the complex recent history of evangelical frankness around sex in certain settings.
In the late 1960s and ’70s, evangelical authors and publishers produced stacks of “marriage manuals” that were, in practice, sex advice books. The genre had become popular in secular culture in the context of the sexual revolution, and many Christians sought their own guidance in a cultural moment in which many felt threatened by feminism and shifting gender expectations. (One of the best sellers, “The Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual Love,” was written by Beverly and Tim LaHaye. The latter would go on to co-author the “Left Behind” series of apocalyptic thrillers.)
The manuals were deeply conservative in their way, with prohibitions against sexual activities outside the heterosexual marital bed (and some activities in it). But “there’s an automatic assumption that men are more sexual than women and they have this hypersexuality that is natural,” said Kelsy Burke, a sociologist at the University of Nebraska — Lincoln who has written about evangelicals and sexuality. A certain amount of lust is “a sin that they acknowledge but is also part of the natural male condition.”
This generation of evangelical leaders was easily teased for its puritanism, and, whenever a sexual scandal erupted, for its hypocrisy. But they were trying to thread a difficult needle, maintaining high community standards without withdrawing from an ever-coarsening mainstream American culture.
With a mission to evangelize that culture, they also wanted to remain relevant and appealing, communicating that you don’t have to give up fun and good sex to become a Christian. It was a complex balancing act between an acknowledgment of basic human urges and the dictates of their faith, whose strictures around language and sexual behavior they saw reflecting deeper theological commitments.
But shared fears can make some vices look like virtues. In a moment in which some Christians feel the world has become dangerously unbalanced, piety can be framed as “wokeness,” and breaking taboos as bravery.
The partial embrace of vulgarity, Dr. Kobes Du Mez pointed out, is happening in a moment of deep conservative outrage, an often visceral disgust, at rising rates of nontraditional gender and sexual identities, particularly among young people. In that context, an indulgence in heterosexual lust, even if in poor taste, is becoming seen as not just benign, but maybe even healthy and noble.
Part of the reason transgender identities are considered a threat is that they blur gender difference, Dr. Kobes Du Mez said. “Against that backdrop, it’s a wholesome thing for a boy to be lusting after a very sexy woman.”

Nizhny Novgorod: A ‘Russian Detroit’ from 19th to 21st centuries (PHOTOS)
Dmitrievskaya Tower through the centuries.
Founded in 1221, Nizhny Novgorod (260 miles east of Moscow) is still one of the most visited and populated Russian cities (it has more than 1.2 million inhabitants). Its ancient kremlin, cozy paved streets with centuries-old buildings (a regular city plan was adopted after Empress Cathrine the Great visited the city in 1767) and scenic views of the Volga River warm the hearts of locals and tourists. By the way, many people confuse it with Veliky Novgorod (established in 859) in the north-west of Russia. In Russian, the word ‘Novgorod’ literally means “new city” and, luckily, there are only two in the whole country: ‘Lower new city’ and ‘Great new city’. One of the oldest and largest automobile plants that produces GAZ cars is still located in Nizhny (Russians often omit ‘Novgorod’) - and that’s why the city is often known as the ‘Russian Detroit’. In Soviet times, it bore the name of main Soviet writer Maxim Gorky , who was born there.
And despite its steel and metal history, today, Nizhny Novgorod has the poetic epithet of the capital of sunsets. We compared some vintage and recent photos of the city.
Dmitrievskaya Tower in 1913 and in 2021.
The stone citadel of Nizhny Novgorod was built in the 16th century around the Chasovaya (Sentry) Hill. Here is the most famous view of the fortress with the Dmitrievskaya Tower. Previously, a moat was dug in front of the tower, which was filled with water. At the end of the 18th century, the moat was filled and the tower sunk about 6 meters into the ground. The tower received its a-la Rus facade only at the end of the 19th century.
2. National Unity Square
Skoba square, 1957 / Monument to Minin and Pozharsky nowadays.
On Moscow’s Red Square, there is a monument to Minin and Pozharsky , who were the leaders of the people’s militia against the Polish intervention of 1611. Interestingly, exactly the same monument stands in Nizhny Novgorod! And all because the militia gathered there. City official Kuzma Minin called on all residents to fight and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky was chosen as the militia head. The date of Moscow’s liberation from the Poles (November 4) has been celebrated as National Unity Day in Russia since 2005. In the same year, Nizhny Novgorod’s Skoba Square, where the militia gathered, was renamed ‘National Unity Square’ and a monument to the two national heroes was erected there, as well.
3. Chkalov staircase
View on Nizhny Novgorod kremlin, Dyatlov hills and Chkalov stairs, 1886 and now.
With 560 steps, these are some of the longest stairs in Russia! The site where this staircase was built was called the ‘Volga Downhill’ and was very popular among locals, since it had one of the most picturesque views of the Volga. The stairs, named after a pilot named Valery Chkalov, connect the upper and lower embankments in the historical center of Nizhny Novgorod. Among the architects was Lev Rudnev , who worked in the Stalinist Empire style and designed the Moscow State University and the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw.
4. Kremlin funicular
Kremlin funicular in operation... and in ruins.
Amazing: At the end of the 19th century, in the center of Nizhny Novgorod, two funiculars operated near the kremlin. They literally worked on water. Imagine a water tank in the car: filled at the upper station, empty at the lower station. When one car went down, the lower one went up under its gravity. They would move at the same time. The funiculars were abandoned in the 1920s, when a tram line was completed. Today, only ruins remain in place of the historical funiculars, although the city administration has already promised to recreate this type of transport. There still is one funicular operating in Nizhny Novgorod, which connects it with the city of Bor on the other side of the Volga River.
5. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street
Bolshaya Pokrovskaya street in 1880s and 2021.
The main street of Nizhny Novgorod has undergone many changes over the centuries. Before the revolution of 1917, it was the favorite area of nobles to settle. Along the street, you can still see old stone mansions, theaters, churches. One of the most beautiful buildings is the main state bank built in Neo-Russian style. It was opened for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov house in 1913. At the beginning of the 20th century, a tram line passed there - one of the first in Russia. But, since the 1980s, the street has become pedestrian only.
6. Rozhdestvenskaya Street
Rozhdestvenskaya Street in 1890s and 2020.
A historical tram line has been preserved on the other oldest street, Rozhdestvenskaya. However, now it’s a tourist transport and it operates only in summer. The street has also preserved its appearance since pre-revolutionary times. There, you can see almost all the same buildings that were in Tsarist Russia, including the Stroganov and Golitsyn estates, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Blinov Passage - the first shopping center outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Construction of the Burevestnik station, 1996 / Burevestnik station, 2009.
Nizhny Novgorod is one of the seven Russian cities with its own underground transport. The metro here was opened in 1985: In Soviet times, only cities with the population over 1 million residents had a subway. It consists of only two lines and sees about 115,000 commuters a day, which makes it less popular than ground transports. In the near future, there are plans to build new stations on the other side of the Oka River.
8. Referees Tower
Before and after restoration, 2021.
The Referees Tower built in the Neo-constructivist style on the embankment of the Grebnoy Canal was built in 1988 for the 2nd All-Union Youth Rowing Games. Over time, it was severely destroyed and only recently restored, for the 800th anniversary of the city. Of course, with cafes and places to relax. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?
9. GAZ automobile plant
The first car assembly plant, 1930 / Gorky Automobile Plant, 2021.
The GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant) plant in Nizhny Novgorod became one of the first in Russia. Early models of trucks and passenger cars were produced under a Ford license. In the 1920s-1930s, American specialists also helped to build the plant itself and the socialist city for workers In the post-war years, the ‘Volga’ and ‘Chaika’ cars were the most expensive among Soviet cars - a citizen’s dream! These days, the plant still operates, but produces mainly trucks and minibuses.
10. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
High water in Nizhny Novgorod, 1890s/ The same district nowadays.
The Cathedral Church of Nizhny Novgorod is located in one of the most picturesque places of the city - on the arrow of the Volga and the Oka rivers. People used to call it ‘fair church’, since its parishioners were merchants who came to fairs from all over the country. It also was only open in the summertime. In the Soviet years, the iconostasis was dismantled for firewood to heat houses and then it was even planned to demolish it altogether and build a lighthouse and a monument to Lenin on the same site. Nevertheless, the cathedral was preserved (in the 1980s, it was restored by volunteers) and, in 2009, was reinstated as the city’s main church.

Top 10 Things To Do And See In Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
Located about 400km east of Moscow , Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most important centers of cultural, economic, and political activity in European Russia . Widely considered, after St Petersburg and Moscow, to be Russia’s ‘third city’, Nizhny is fast becoming a hot-spot for Russian and global tourists alike, attracted by the city’s up-and-coming reputation and stunning landscape.
The Kremlin
Jutting out from the cliffs that overlook the meeting point of the great Volga and Oka rivers, Nizhny Novgorod ‘s ancient Kremlin boasts of some of the best views in the city. Designed by an Italian architect, the 13 magnificent towers and the 12 meter high walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin date back to 1500. On this very spot in 1612, heroes of Russian history Kuzma Minin and Count Dmitry Pozharsky defeated the invading Polish army in extraordinary circumstances. This moment has become legend in Russian history and a statue in honor of these two lies at the foot of St Basil’s in Moscow. The Kremlin is the historic center of the city where you will find an art museum and the lovely Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, as well as a striking monument to those that fought in the Second World War and its flame eternally flickering on in their memory.
Completed in 2012, taking a ride on Nizhny Novgorod’s cablecar has fast become a favorite activity of tourists. The trip offers unparalleled opportunities to view the city’s gorgeous natural landscape from this bird’s eye position. The 3660m long gondola lift connects Nizhny to the town of Bor and stretches across the Volga River for 900 panoramic meters. The gondola acts as both a convenient means of transportation and a fantastic sight-seeing expedition – come at sunset for a golden-bathed view of the river and surrounding landscape.
The house-museum of Maxim Gorky
During the Soviet era, Nizhny Novgorod, birthplace of celebrated Russian writer Maxim Gorky , was renamed ‘Gorky’ in honor of this national hero. This home has been preserved in a state as accurate as possible to how it was left by Gorky and is so successful in this that it would seem as though the writer still lived there. The museum ‘s historic interiors and authentic furnishings will transport you back to the 1900s and the creative world of this icon of Russian literature. Come and make the most of this unique experience to delve into the childhood world of this Russian father of social realism. Museum booklets and guided tours are available in English.

Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka
A yarmarka is something akin to a fair, and this historic former market place was restored in 1991, the site now playing home to a superb modern exhibition center. The city’s yarmarka plays host to international events, fairs, and conventions. In 2011, for the 20 year anniversary of the fair’s refounding, a vast array of exhibitions were organized, attended by thousands including members of the British royal family, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev , and Margaret Thatcher . The fair is not only a buzzing center of business and culture, it is also one of the city’s most impressive sights.
The Nizhegorodsky State Art Museum
Located inside Nizhny Novgorod’s ancient Kremlin, the building that houses this art gallery was once the home of the governor of the city. The exhibits are wide-ranging and include everything from 14th century religious icons, to work by 20th century contemporary Russian masters. Particularly dazzling is the collection by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. There is also a large arts and crafts collection which demonstrates the exquisite handiwork of Russian artisans throughout history.
1. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street
Bolshaya pokrovskaya street.
An excellent spot to soak up the best of the city’s atmosphere, this pedestrian street lies in the heart of Nizhny Novgorod. The beautiful Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street is constantly buzzing and provides new and exciting sights at every turn. Gorgeous buildings and fountains tower on all sides – showcasing the best of Nizhny’s architecture. Quirky shop fronts and lovely local souvenirs will have you pausing at every window while the charming cafés will draw you in with their tempting aromas. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street transforms by night into a vibrant hub of evening activity and is the place to come for a night-out in the city. The bars of this street are favorites with Nizhny Novgorod’s student population.
The Chkalov Staircase
An idyllic spot from which to watch the sun’s rays set over the city, this monumental creation was constructed by the Soviet government and is unique to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The staircase derives its name from pilot Valery Chkalov who, in 1937, became the first man to fly from Moscow to Vancouver through the North Pole. A monument to Chkalov stands at the top of the stairs. The construction of the staircase cost almost 8 million rubles – an immense sum at the time. Over 1,500 stairs connect the city center with the river embankment – making Chkalov’s landmark the longest flight of stairs along the Volga. Nowadays the staircase is a favorite meeting place and relaxation spot for locals.
The Rukavishnikov Estate Museum
The Rukavishnikovs were a family of immensely wealthy merchants originating from the region around Nizhny Novgorod. This superbly restored palace , their former home, has been transformed into a museum of Russian history and gives a realistic snap-shot of life for the wealthy under tsarist rule. The ornate 19th century interiors and exquisite facade are sure to dazzle with their beauty while the lush green of the surrounding natural landscape provides a tranquil getaway from the city center. Lavish furnishings, priceless antiques, and glistening gold will transport you back in time to a world of balls, carriages, banquets, and tsars. Join the world of Russian noble ladies and gentlemen for a day in this stunning palace.
The Sakharov Museum
Nizhny Novgorod’s Sakharov Museum is dedicated to dissident Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov . The nuclear physicist and human rights activist was exiled for six years to the very flat in which the museum is now housed. Sakharov’s support for civil reform and improved human rights in the Soviet Union earned him harsh persecution from the Russian government, but also, in 1975, a Nobel Peace Prize . Sakharov was incarcerated here until 1986 when a KGB officer arrived to install a phone in the flat. Just after the phone was installed it began to ring: the caller was Mikhail Gorbachev, ringing Sakharov to inform him of his release. This phone is now one of the museum’s most treasured artifacts.
The National Centre of Contemporary Art
Inside the walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin can also be found one of the best modern art galleries in Russia. Linked to galleries in both St Petersburg and Moscow, this top-ranking exhibition center houses regularly changing displays of both Russian and international art as well as interactive exhibits and a media library. Progress is also on-going of adding a concert hall, extending the exhibition areas, and creating a restaurant. These additions aim to make art contemporary, not simply a detached, unrelatable concept, but bring it closer to the Russian people.
