Nottingham going above and beyond when it comes to concessionary travel

16 February

nottingham city travel pass

Nottingham City Council will announce at its Executive Board meeting on Tuesday 21 February that it will continue to go above and beyond its statutory duties when it comes to helping older and disabled people who live in the city get around.

The City Council must provide concessionary travel – free bus travel for older and disabled people from 9.30am-11pm on weekdays and all day on weekends and bank holidays – under the Transport Act 2000 and the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS).

Nottingham City Council does better than that by:

  • Providing free travel on the tram for older and disabled people (again 9.30am-11pm weekdays and all day weekends and bank holidays)
  • Providing a companion pass, giving free travel to a carer or companion for those with certain disabilities, including those who are blind, have a severe walking disability or a severe learning disability and would have difficulty travelling alone
  • Providing additional free travel on the bus or tram for disabled city residents from start of service – 9.30am.

Public transport operators are reimbursed for the loss in revenue by the City Council for every pass holder journey recorded. The City Council uses money provided by the Government to help support the cost of the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme. The cost of this scheme will be determined by passenger numbers and other factors, and is likely to be around £7.381m in 2023/24.

The additional cost to deliver free tram travel and carer travel is funded by the City Council and will cost in the region of £1.075m in this financial year.

Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Parks, Councillor Audra Wynter, said: “I’m proud that here in Nottingham we go above and beyond for our older and disabled residents, providing more than other cities to help them get around Nottingham on our award-winning buses and trams.

“It’s so important for us to help older and disabled people to get around without the need to use a car and it is also critical that we continue to support sustainable travel as we work towards becoming the UK’s first carbon neutral city by 2028.”

  • Older city residents can apply for a travel pass once they reach state pension age (66): https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/information-for-residents/transport-parking-and-streets/public-transport/apply-for-an-older-persons-bus-pass/

Free bus pass changes: How to check eligibility and when to expect changes

Different rules apply to different areas of the UK

In England you can get a free bus pass when you reach the state pension age but with proposals to increase the age limit at which you can claim your pension, what does that mean for bus pass eligibility?

Different rules apply to different areas of the UK.

For instance, in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you are able to apply from the age of 60. In England, however, it is aligned with the age for a state pension, so this could also mean the age for travel discounts could increase, according to the Mirror .

How to check if you are eligible for a free bus pass

To work out if you are eligible for a free bus pass in England, first of all you must have reached the national retirement age.

The best way to find out if you are eligible is to check locally and there are easy ways to do that.

Nottinghamshire County Council, for instance, allows you to apply, renew and check eligibility via its website , similarly, Nottingham City Council allows you to apply online as do other Nottinghamshire councils. Follow this link to the Government site for information on getting your bus pass and details of which local authority you need to apply based on your postcode.

Information is available whether you can get a pass, whether it is possible to get one sooner, and the details for your local area and any specific rules there.

Is the free bus pass eligibility criteria changing for pensioners?

Those eligible to draw a state pension should also be able to get a free bus pass in their local area.

The Government is currently on course to increase the state pension age from 66 to 67 between the years of 2026 and 2028.

A further increase is expected in 2048, which is expected to see the national retirement age go up to 68.

This could still change with Government policy and if data regarding life expectancy changes at all.

How to apply for a free bus pass and travel as a pensioner

The same Government tool that helps you navigate whether or not you are eligible for the pass will also help you apply by directing you to the right authority for your pass. You can apply for the discount scheme on the Government website.

State pension claimants can enter their postcode online to be provided with contact details for their local council.

Local council procedures can change when it comes to administering free passes if local authorities are contacted instead.

Extra benefits beyond just the standard state pension are important for the lives of pensioners across the country.

Group Communications Director at Just Group, Stephen Lowe, said: “The social and cultural reference to ‘freebie’ benefits means nearly all over 65s know about them but their financial value is dwarfed by other benefits which are less well known.

“The state pension alone will not provide a comfortable standard of living so checking your entitlement for other state benefits should be as much a part of planning for retirement as understanding what your private pension and other savings will provide.”

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates scoring Nottingham Forest’s third goal against Fulham in first-half stoppage time

Nottingham Forest’s Hudson-Odoi and Gibbs-White give Fulham both barrels

Nottingham Forest’s best opening 45 minutes of the season proved sufficient for Nuno Espírito Santo’s team to climb three points clear of the relegation zone as Morgan Gibbs-White, making one goal and scoring another, gave them a winning platform.

In between, Chris Wood struck for a third successive game to resuscitate a season that appeared in danger of spiralling out of Forest’s control after the four-point penalty for falling foul of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

Forest may be appealing against that ruling but their best bet is to keep performing like this. They blew Fulham out of the water in that opening period, meaning Tosin Adarabioyo’s goal early in the second half provided tension but no detriment.

Nuno praised the energy that was transmitted between the crowd and the players as the City Ground regained the intensity that has so often provided the difference in this era. “It was so important,” the Forest manager said. “You felt it. It was huge. This appeal that we’ve been making, we’ve been [asking] of the fans, making the noise, bringing noise, it helps so much the players. But tonight it work both ways.”

Nuno warned however that Forest are far from safe as his team prepare to go to Tottenham on Sunday. “We must not get that over the moon,” he said. “There’s still a long way to go.”

The home team could not have asked for a better start. Two goals to the good within 20 minutes, they embarrassed Fulham into making three substitutions.

Callum Hudson-Odoi initiated this blitz. Gibbs-White was instrumental, with his 10th goal involvement of the season. He turned Palhinha inside out in the centre-circle before sending Hudson-Odoi away with a perfectly paced through ball. The former Chelsea winger used his speed before cutting back inside Kenny Tete to drill in a fourth goal in his last nine league games.

Hudson-Odoi should have made it two, allowing Bernd Leno to save after being put in by Gibbs-White, before Chris Wood did so. Receiving Murillo’s ball to feet, the centre-forward turned with ease before shooting early from 25 yards beyond an unsighted Leno.

After Anthony Elanga rushed in to receive Gibbs-White’s return pass and shoot against the far post, Marco Silva decided he had seen enough. He withdrew Harry Wilson, Alex Iwobi and Sasa Lukic, sending on Adama Traoré, Willian and Tom Cairney.

Nottingham Forest’s substitute goalkeeper Matt Turner is booked by Michael Oliver

“When I made the triple change our first half and result at that point was not the fault of those three,” the Fulham manager said. “The team needed much more changes than three. As a collective we were not there. We were losing almost all the balls. On the ball and off the ball we were not aggressive enough.”

after newsletter promotion

Only Sheffield United have fewer than Fulham’s two away wins and, despite the European places being within sight, the beach looked a preferred destination for the visitors’ players. They had a spell of possession but, in the last seconds of first-half stoppage time, Gibbs-White made it 3-0.

Danilo, reintroduced into the midfield engine room, surged at the back line before slipping the ball left to Gibbs-White, who took a composed touch before slotting home.

Fulham, however, came back out with a gusto that might served a purpose at the first kick-off. Within four minutes, it was 3-1. Andreas Pereira’s corner was met by Adarabioyo, who headed beyond Matz Sels. Suddenly, notwithstanding the two-goal buffer, it was game on. With the rain pouring down, the tension was back. Matt Turner, Forest’s substitute goalkeeper, was cautioned for delaying a restart; once Michael Oliver’s back was turned, he waved his arms to wind up the crowd even more.

The intensity was returning with a vengeance, the second half a series of traded attacks. When Neco Williams came back inside on to his left foot, he was unlucky to see his shot deflect off Cairney on to the bar; from the rebound, Danilo’s firecracker ricocheted off Wood.

At the other end, Adarabioyo had one header tipped aside superbly by Sels, and another rebound off the underside of the bar. Thankfully for a relieved City Ground, Forest hung on.

Nottingham Forest vs Fulham LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction

Nottingham forest 3-1 fulham: three first-half goals earned the hosts a precious win, article bookmarked.

Find your bookmarks in your Independent Premium section, under my profile

Three first-half goals earned Nottingham Forest a vital 3-1 victory over Fulham in their battle to stay away from the Premier League relegation zone.

The hosts were irrepressible in the first period with Callum Hudson-Odoi opening the scoring after nine minutes and Chris Wood doubling Forest’s advantage in the 19th minute.

Stunned Fulham manager Marco Silva made a triple substitution but it got worse for the visitors before the interval as the outstanding Morgan Gibbs-White made it 3-0 in stoppage time with a clinical finish.

Fulham reacted well in the second half and threw themselves a lifeline when Tosin Adarabioyo headed in from a corner.

Both sides hit the woodwork but despite a few jitters Forest held firm to move to 25 points, three ahead of Luton Town who occupy the last relegation place.

  • Morgan Gibbs-White inspires Nottingham Forest’s first-half blitz of Fulham

Nottingham Forest vs Fulham

It's all done and dusted at the City Ground, as Forest's three-goal lead from the first half proves crucial to sealing a 3-1 victory over Fulham!! Only one goal to speak of in the second, but what a half it proved to be with chances galore at both ends. Fulham needed a response after an opening 45 minutes of disarray, and got it just four minutes into the second half thanks to Adarabioyo's towering header. Still two goals to the good, Forest pushed to put the result beyond doubt, but couldn't add to their first-half tally as Williams struck the crossbar and Danilo and Origi fired high and wide from close range late on. Fulham had an absolute glut of chances throughout the half, but they too couldn't add to their earlier goal, with Adarabioyo and Muniz both heading wide as Tete and Traore's efforts hit the woodwork. A frenetic, free-scoring, end-to-end game comes to a close, as Forest secure a huge three points to take themselves three points clear of Luton in 18th. Fulham could well have overcome their woeful first-half showing which led to three players being hooked on half an hour, and drop to 13th with their 14th defeat of the season.

FULL-TIME: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 3-1 FULHAM.

OFF THE UPRIGHT!!! Fulham hit the woodwork again!! Traore collects Reed's pass and drills a shot goalwards from the right-hand side of the box, but it cannons back off the top of the near post and goes behind for a goal-kick!!

WIDE!!! Wood's first time ball out to Origi on the right is inch-perfect, and the Belgian charges into the box. Engaging Leno, he bears down on goal and shoots towards the bottom corner, but drags his effort just a few inches beyond the far post!!

Murillo looks for Wood again with a long-range throughball into the box, but the New Zealand striker gets nowhere near it as Leno comes off his line to collect.

FIVE added minutes to play at the City Ground - will that be enough time for Fulham to rescue something at the death?

With time running out, Fulham win a close-range free-kick from the left-hand side of Forest's box, and Willian delivers. The low ball into the near post is hooked away from the goalmouth by Omobamidele, and Dominguez arrives on the byline to scythe it clear of danger!

OVER!!! A loose Traore pass leaves space in behind for Reyna to play in Danilo, and the midfielder charges into the visitors' box before blasting a powerful strike over the top from an acute angle!!

OVER!! Origi steps away from two defenders and plays a one-two with Wood before letting fly from the edge of the box, but his left-footed strike flashes just a few inches beyond the crossbar!

Fulham have attempted 14 shots in this match, higher than their Premier League average of 13.2 this season, yet have only Adarabioyo's goal to show for it with Forest looking set to secure the points here.

Nottingham Forest beats Fulham 3-1 to move away from relegation zone

NOTTINGHAM, England — Morgan Gibbs-White set up a goal and scored another to help Nottingham Forest push away from the relegation zone with a 3-1 victory over Fulham in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Forest snapped a five-game winless run with a first-half onslaught that prompted Fulham manager Marco Silva to make a triple substitution just past the half-hour mark.

Callum Hudson-Odoi collected Gibbs-White's long through ball and scored in the ninth minute at the City Ground. Chris Wood doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a strike from distance with goalkeeper Bernd Leno playing just outside his 6-yard box.

Looking for a spark, Silva sent on Willian for Harry Wilson; Tom Cairney for Sasa Lukic; and Adama Traoré for Alex Iwobi.

But it was Gibbs-White who struck next, taking a pass from Danilo and beating Leno with a shot to the far right corner in first-half stoppage time.

Tosin Adarabioyo got Fulham on the board four minutes after the break with a header off a corner.

Forest is one spot above the bottom three, three points clear of 18th-place Luton.

School Transport for Primary and Secondary School Children

School transport bus pass.

Nottingham City Council encourages all children to walk from home to school for exercise and health; if this is not possible, then the journey to school should have careful consideration for both parent and pupil when choosing a school.

If Walking Is not an Option

  • The Council would prefer pupils to use public transport instead of a car.
  • Bus and tram services pass nearby to every school in the City of Nottingham.
  • Bus and tram operators offer discounted tickets to children aged under 16 years.

In some cases, the Council may offer help with travel if the school your child is attending is the designated school (the catchment school) or the nearest school to your home address. This is dependent on the age of your child and the distance from your home to the school. If support is offered, it will be in the form of a bus pass.

The Department for Education has published a blog post on free school travel:

  • Free school transport explained: From whose eligible to how it works - The Education Hub (blog.gov.uk)

The blog post aims to support parents’ understanding of the national eligibility criteria and to answer some commonly occurring questions.

The following PDF Document contains more information about the 'Home to School Travel Assistance Policy.' Click the button below.

  • Click to download and view the Home to School Transport Policy

To find a school in Nottingham City, please see  Choosing a School

By law, we must calculate the nearest school using the walking distance from our home when making decisions about free travel.

Important  Note  - The nearest school by walking distance may not be the nearest school ‘as the crow flies’, which is the measurement used when deciding how to fairly allocate places when a school is over-subscribed.

  • Under 7 Years -  Transport will only be considered if the pupil lives more than 2 miles walking distance from their designated school
  • Aged  8 to 11 -  Transport will only be considered if the pupil lives more than 3 miles walking distance from their designated school
  • Aged 11-16 -  Transport will only be considered if the pupil lives more than 3 miles walking distance from their designated school

Low-Income Families

Support with transport will be provided to eligible pupils who are in receipt of Free School Meals or whose parents are in receipt of the maximum level of Working Tax Credit.

  • Aged 8 to 11  - If their designated school is over 2 miles walking distance from their home address
  • Aged 11 to 16 -  Transport is provided for any of the 3 nearest available secondary schools to their home address if these schools are more than two miles walking distance and less than six miles driving distance away from home
  • Aged 11 to 16 attending faith schools – Transport is provided if they travel between 2 and 15 miles to their nearest available school. If you chose the school on the grounds of religion, belief
