Sanna Bay on the Ardnamurchan Penninsula.

A feast for the eyes and a journey for the soul – you can’t help but enjoy our breath taking journey cruising the Isle of Skye and the Inner Hebrides. Full of majestic and mystical sights bathed in historical folklore with its ancient structures gifted by man and nature.

Unimaginable views are in abundance on this cruise. The Isle of Skye is home to a multitude of ancient castles, fairy wishing pools as well as the Old Man of Storr, featured in the iconic scene from the movie Prometheus. All of which is simply enhanced by the multitude of rare birds and wildlife. The Inner Hebrides and the islands most commonly known as the Small Isles provide an amazing array of wildlife and secret little bays awash with the spirit of Scotland.

Passing places, anchorages and ports

Our gateway to the highlands and islands ……. Historically a fishing and trading village until the Victorian steamers started arriving in larger numbers to this pretty village, Oban grew into a town as it became a main stopping off point for the Western Isles.

Set in a natural bay, it is largely protected from wilder weather and has some beautiful seaside shops to visit. At the top of the hill behind the bay sits McCaig’s Tower or the Folly as it is better known. Built in 1902, McCaig built the colosseum style structure as a lasting testament to his family and also to provide work for the local tradesmen. Despite it being a steep walk to the top, the views are spectacular. Oban also boasts a cathedral, castle and golf course and has a rich culture in traditional Scottish music and this is evident with its many festivals. The fresh seafood found here is a must, it is literally from sea to plate!

cruises around inner hebrides

A picture perfect setting of coloured buildings down to the pier surrounded by wooded hills around the bay up to the lighthouse with its playful otters among the rocks. At the bottom of the bay is thought to remain the wreck of a Spanish galleon which fled the English fleet when she anchored in Tobermory to take on provisions. Following a dispute over payment the ship caught fire which caused the gunpowder to explode. She was supposed to have been carrying millions of gold coins when she went to the bottom but no-one has ever managed to find any significant treasure. Tobermory also has its very own chocolate factory.

Just north of the tip of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula lies Sanna , famed for its beaches, rocks and dunes that make this one of the prettiest coasts in Scotland. Remote and beautiful, Sanna contains some of the most unusual landscapes in Scotland, a circular heather strewn plain surrounded by a ring of steep and well defined rock hills, the crater of a long extinct volcano. The surrounding views of the water offer both a bright light turquoise or deep dark hues of blue depending on whether the bed is sand or rock. A wild spot with rugged mountains the backdrop to this most memorable and dramatic seascape, Sanna offers generous views with the possibility of catching the odd stolen glimpse of some of Scotland’s most elusive wildlife. Loch Sunart shores play host to sea eagles, otters and pine martens going about their natural business

Sanna Bay on the Ardnamurchan Penninsula.

A working fishing port on the North West coast of Scotland, it is visited often by the famous Jacobite steam train from the Harry Potter movies. Full of character, it remains a tranquil place to visit and at just 200 years old it is rather a new town for Scotland. Benefiting from its new marina and the local art shops serving local artisans, Mallaig has one of the best wee fish and chip shops and has seen many drive from the central belt for the day and a fish supper – including us!

Loch Nevis is a sea loch with shallow shingle beaches, imposing mountains at either side and unparalleled views of Ben Nevis. The shores are dotted with stone farmhouses from various dates throughout the ages. In the evening you can see the sun setting over the Isle of Skye which is quite something to behold. A likely opportunity to visit Britains’s remotest pub, The Old Forge at Inverie on the Knyodart penninsula

cruises around inner hebrides

Eilean Donan Castle

At the point where three great lochs meet and surrounded by majestic and graceful landscapes sits the famed Eilean Donan Castle. Easily recognised from many classic photos of Scotland it is probably the most pictured and iconic of all the Scottish Castles and one of the most visited attractions in the Highlands. Originally the site of a monastic cell in 634AD, the first castle was later established by Alexander II in the 13th century in an effort to help protect the area from Viking incursions. Since then at least four different versions of the Castle have stood and you can explore all the castle and journey through its history. Used as a location in the movie “Highlander”, it is said that once you have visited you will always yearn to return.

Kyles of Lochalsh

The gateway to the Isle of Skye, Lochalsh village has some beautiful whitewashed cottages that you can see from the water and fantastic views of the world famous Skye Bridge and the Cuillin Range. The surrounding landscape is a haven for deer – both red and roe, as well as golden eagles and otters.

Skye Bridge

The world famous Skye Bridge was built in 1995 and linked Skye to the mainland. It is actually two bridges, which use the island of Eilean Ban as a stepping stone. The site of political turmoil when it was completed as a levy was charged to cross, many a dispute and stand-off was had and soon the bridge was free to cross.

Scottish Landscape

On the shores of Loch Carron, Plockton was the location for the TV series Hamish Macbeth, starring Robert Carlyle and was also used in “The Wicker Man”. Sitting in a sheltered bay, its temperate climate is home to coral beaches and stunning scenery at every turn. Considered one of the most sought after places to live or holiday in Scotland, it is always a pleasure to visit here.

Isle of Rasaay

From the Norse language meaning Isle of the Red Deer, the island is home to Dun Caan – a unique flat topped peak of 1456ft and also Inverarish village – where many German prisoners of war were held during World War I. They were used to work the iron ore mines and create shells and it was reported to contravene The Hague conventions. Covered up by the government in 1920, much of the paperwork was destroyed. What is fascinating is that the locals used to regularly sneak food for the prisoners, supporting them however they could. The island was home to life more than 9000 years ago and was more densely populated during medieval times with remains of a 13 th century chapel dedicated to St Moluag and the ruined castle at Brochel.

Take time to look out for Golden eagles who are known to nest on the island.

puffin with open beak

The main town on Skye was once known as Kings Port after its visit by King James V in 1540. Later, the town was visited by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746 as he bade goodbye to his love, Flora MacDonald. The island became more developed in the 1820s when Scottish architect Thomas Telford built roads to other developing towns. He was also responsible for the construction of the pier in Portree. The harbour is still the main focus for the town and is surrounded by a mix of brightly painted houses and stonewashed cottages. As a family, we love it here as it has a collection of good shops, great places to eat and some fantastic pubs!

On the east coast of Skye, Kylerhea is perhaps best known for its otter sanctuary. Timid and shy, these secretive creatures are less easy to spot than the seals who often bask on the shore. Stonechats, willow warblers and wood warblers sing from perches just off the path. Bold robins and chaffinches will hop around the path just inches away from your toes.

Isle Ornsay

One of the most attractive villages on Skye sits on the edge of a spectacular natural harbour. The stone piers were constructed in the 1820s allowing the village to become a commercial fishing port for herring as well as a stopping off point for steamers travelling out from Glasgow. Due to the steamers arriving and the village becoming a popular tourist resort, Isleornsay became the first place on Skye to boast a public toilet.

Overlooking the Isle of Ornsay, which is accessible by foot at low tide, the mainland mountains serve as the backdrop to the village and the views around the lighthouse on Ornsay are spectacular.

Knock Castle

Just before we reach Armadale Castle, we will pass Knock Bay and the rocky headland on which sits Knock Castle. With sheer drops on each side of it, the best views are to be had by boat.

Dating back to the 1400s the castle was a stalwart fortress that had its own protected harbour making it difficult to attack. Originally the site of an Iron Age fort, the castle changed ownership between the MacLeods and the MacDonalds before being captured by the forces of James I. Abandoned in the 1600s, the castle is said to be still home to its resident ghosts, the Green Lady and also a spirit who is said to watch over the local cattle and protect them from harm.

The Small Isles

Just south of the Isle of Skye lies an archipelago of four small islands – Eigg, Canna, Rum and Muck. Made up of a column of lava, Eigg has a bloodthirsty history of clan rivalry that ended in the death of the islands entire population. Rum is a national nature reserve and is one of Britain’s last wildernesses and is home to the Manx Shearwater that glides straight winged along the surface of the surrounding coast. On the smallest island Muck, a dagger and a number of burial cairns have been found which date back to the Bronze Age, whilst thanks to the Gulf Stream, its waters support a number of rare crabs, small purple sea urchins, and the only British Coral, the “Cup Coral”. Canna, the last of the Small Isles is the archetype of Hebridean islands and displays evidence of the once great volcanic forces which have been at work in the earth’s crust. Wildlife is abundant here both on land and sea allowing you to see nature at its best.

cruises around inner hebrides

This trip was amazing! the staff where very attentive to all of our needs and the food was truly something to write about. One of the most enjoyable cruises we have ever been on and look forward to seeing you all this year.

cruises around inner hebrides

An overall 5* experience with the food helping to keep the rating. We received a truly pampered and supported service with a great service from the crew and Captain who was well travelled and pleasant, full of stories, but the riddles were a bit too difficult! Mark was most knowledgeable regarding wildlife as was all of the staff. The boat was excellent and always clean and tidy with good accommodation, plenty of room to move around and benefited with the extra storage space.

5* treatment that I’m happy to recommend everything was most impressive and I would rate excellent. The captain and crew where very friendly and approachable.

A fantastic and relaxing break from studying! Our Captain was very informative and happy to supply us with information and was always very welcoming on the bridge. Deck crew where not only very professional at handling the ship but were very polite and courteous to the guests. The chef’s meals were divine which we stuffed ourselves with. The steward kept up the service to a very high standard and I would definitely be recommending.

Shiant Isles

Hebridean Island Odyssey cruise - Puffins, Eagles, and Scenic Cruising

A 9-night cruise around the Inner and Outer Hebrides, making the most of the breeding season at the seabird cities and island-hopping too. That means plenty of puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and lots more wildlife too!

Dates: 27th April - 6th May 2024

Combining some of our favourite locations in the Hebrides for wildlife and scenery, we will visit puffin colonies from Lunga in the south to the Shiants in the North Minch and a variety of islands in-between. This is a great time of year for seeing a variety of birds including puffins, golden eagles, and white-tailed eagles.

Our evenings will be spent in secluded natural anchorages often adjacent to seals, otters, shorebirds, and other native wildlife. Guests will join the Hjalmar Bjørge around 1530 on Sat 27th April in Oban. The itinerary is dependent on the weather – balancing shelter with reaching our preferred destinations.

These are planned to include Mull, some of the the Small Isles (Rum, Canna, Eigg and Muck), the Isle of Skye, Coll or Tiree. Expect sea and golden eagles, lots of different seabirds and hopefully a variety of cetaceans, and seals. Part of this exploration will include heading out off north-west Skye for the privately owned Shiant Isles, visiting the 2nd of our puffin and seabird colonies.

The Shiants are a small archipelago in the middle of the Minch often described as a St Kilda in miniature. There is also an opportunity to take in the island of Harris and Lewis when we are this far north.

Our return will see us sailing down the west coast of the spectacular Scottish Highlands. On the final day we head back into Oban for your departure after breakfast on Monday 6th May.

Cruise Overview

A scottish hebridean island odyssey.

11-day expedition cruise around Scotland and the Hebrides

*On our 10 April 2024 departure we are unfortunately unable to land on the Island of St. Kilda. Instead, we'll cruise by the island and the Boreray Stacks, seeking out their prolific birdlife from both the ship and our small boats.

Romantic and rugged landscapes

Cruise from Glasgow to remote and wildlife-rich Scottish islands, discovering local culture and history, and experiencing activities that bring you right up close to nature. We'll be landing on beaches, going on guided hikes, sea kayaking and much more as we explore this fascinating country.

Whisky, wildlife and UNESCO Sites

You'll be transfixed by the raw natural beauty of the Treshnish Isles, Iona and Skye, while UNESCO-listed St Kilda gives new meaning to ‘wild abandon’. Visit castles, historic homes and standing stones and experience Scotland's cultural notes with whisky, tartan and tweed.

Embark in Glasgow (Greenock)

Start in Scotland's stylish city of culture

A former industrial powerhouse, Glasgow has reinvented itself as a cultural hot spot, packed with museums, galleries and parks. Discover the splendid Art Nouveau architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh before your expedition cruise begins.

MS Spitsbergen, one of our smaller vessels and built for close up exploration, will be waiting for you. Explore the ship before meeting the Expedition Team – your guides for your adventure ahead. Enjoy your first dinner aboard as we set sail.

Beautiful Isle of Arran

Enjoy wildlife spotting on Arran

Welcome to the Isle of Arran, known for its heather-cloaked landscapes. It's the perfect place for a scenic hike. Why not try the popular Goat Fell trail and see if you can spot Scotland’s ‘Big Five’: the Golden Eagle, red deer, red squirrel, otter and harbour seal, all of which can be found on Arran.

Explore the woodland and gardens of Brodick Castle, and marvel at the Neolithic treasures and huge upright slabs at the Machrie Moor Stone Circle. Your stop wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Isle of Arran Distillery and a taste of their distinctive malt.

Islay's whiskey and nature

Fire up your spirit of discovery on 'whisky island'

Islay is the proud home of world-famous peaty single malts – but that's far from the only reason to visit. Here you'll discover fascinating ancient monoliths and the enigmatic settlement of Finlaggan.

Today, Islay is a wildlife paradise, home to over 200 species of birds – including oystercatchers, gannets and Golden Eagles. From its sandy beaches, you can sometimes spot dolphins and basking sharks.

Port Ellen is the gateway to three of the island’s nine distilleries. Of course, no trip to Islay is complete without a 'wee dram' from one of these famous and historic whisky producers, including Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Sustainable Isle of Gigha

Discover a slice of paradise in the Hebrides

Today our Scottish isles cruise takes us to tiny Gigha (pronounced ‘Gee-a), a little sandy slice of paradise in the Hebrides. The island is community-owned, bought by its 163 residents in 2002, and has a sustainable local economy. Try some of the seafood, such as Gigha halibut and oysters.

At only seven miles long, the best way to get around Gigha is on foot or by hiring a bike. Visit the woodland gardens of Achamore House and admire the colourful rhododendrons. Then explore white sandy coves and the turquoise waters along the coast, such as the Bàgh Rubha Ruaidh and Bàgh na Dòirlinne beaches.

A most delightful sound

Get ready for the dreamy beauty of the Sound of Mull

Brightly-coloured Georgian houses line the waterfront in the picturesque fishing port of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. Learn about the local heritage at the whisky distillery and Mull Museum, or stroll around the loch in Aros Park and see the Baliscate Standing Stones.

The Isle of Mull is a magnet for birders, with the highest breeding density of Golden Eagles in Europe, while White-tailed Eagles can often be seen soaring above the coast. We'll also explore Loch Sunart, a Marine Protected Area known for otters, dolphins and porpoises, and stop by Mingary Castle.

cruises around inner hebrides

Wild St. Kilda

Discover the untamed beauty of St Kilda

A visit to this UNESCO double World Heritage Site is an unforgettable experience. If conditions allow, we'll spend the day here.

One of Europe's most important seabird colonies, St Kilda's volcanic outcrops are home to thousands of nesting seabirds, including Northern Fulmars, Black-legged Kittiwakes, and over 60,000 pairs of Northern Gannets.

In 1930, St Kilda’s last residents asked to be evacuated due to the island's wild and exposed conditions. Explore the abandoned village and see the distinctive cleits – circular stone buildings used to store peat, eggs and smoked puffins – before returning to the comfort of your ship.

cruises around inner hebrides

Experience the Gaelic culture of the Hebrides

We travel next to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, home of the famous Harris Tweed cloth. We'll visit Gothic-style Lews Castle, full of trails and fantastic views. You can also see 'Scotland's Stonehenge' at the Callanish Standing Stones or visit a crofting village.

We'll also explore the wild and beautiful Shiant Isles, a tiny archipelago set in the Minch Strait. One of the most important breeding colonies for seabirds in Europe, keep an eye out for European Shags, Common Eiders, Northern Fulmars and Great Skuas in the surrounding waters or on volcanic ledges.

cruises around inner hebrides

The coastline of the Island of Mull is an exceptional habitat for wildlife, much of it rare, which can be seen at close quarters on our cruises. The Island of Mull is the second largest island in the Inner Hebrides and much of its beautiful coastline can be explored on a 6-night cruise. The east side of the island is protected by the Sound of Mull and the coastline of Morvern, whereas on the western side the large sea lochs of Loch na Keal and Loch Scridain encroach deep into the island. Also on the western coast are the fascinating offshore islands of Iona, Gometra, Ulva, Staffa, and the Treshnish Isles, all havens for wildlife.

Cruise around The Island of Mull and it’s offshore islands

One of the delights of Mull is that it is possible to cruise right around the mainland and offshore islands and experience the many diverse aspects of the island that make it so special. There is a wide choice of anchorages and shore visits; the choice of itinerary will depend on wind, weather, tide and the wishes of guests.

Our anchorages on and around The Island of Mull

Loch spelve.

The large sea loch, Loch Spelve is a favourite anchorages as it is not only a great setting but a good place to spot otters and a favourite breeding ground for shorebirds. There is the opportunity for a lovely shoreside walk around the loch under a canopy of old sessile oak woods. It is also a treat to buy mussels straight from the mussel farm in the loch for serving up at dinner.

Duart Bay is on the south eastern corner of the Isle of Mull close to the southern entrance to the Sound of Mull. Perched on the top of the dramatic headland overlooking the bay is the iconic Duart Castle. Otters, dolphins and porpoises are frequently spotted here.

The Sound of Mull

The sheltered Sound of Mull is particularly rich in marine life. Shoals of fish attract dolphins and porpoises which are common sightings. The Grey Isles on the Morvern side of the Sound is a popular anchorage for us because of the wildlife present there, including a good chance of spotting bottlenose dolphins and white-tailed sea eagles

At the top of the Sound of Mull is Tobermory, the main town on Mull, with an impressive natural harbour which is always busy with fishing boats, yachts and ferries. It is a picture-postcard town with brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier and the high woodland-fringed hills surrounding the bay. Tobermory has an excellent range of speciality shops and local heritage attractions and is a popular place for a shore visit. A walk to Aros Park is one of the town’s most attractive features with a stunning waterfall, lochside and forest walks with lovely views over the Sound of Mull.

Calgary Bay

Cruising around the top of Mull we reach Calgary Bay, facing the Atlantic with the Isle of Coll on the horizon. Apart from the stunning beach, Calgary Bay is known for its machair grasslands with many wild flowers, which is a designated SSSI. Nearby is the deserted village of Inivea and a ruined dun. The bay is a haven for wildlife with divers and ducks on the water, sand martins nesting in the dunes and otters frequenting the shoreline. It is also a good spot for both golden eagles and white tailed eagles soaring above.

Treshnish Isles

From Calgary Bay the unique and evocative landscape of The Treshnish Isles can be clearly seen. The Islands are very exposed with no landing sites and human habitation, therefore a haven for wildlife. The Treshnish Isles posses unique landscape, rich wildlife communities and contain habitat which is vital to several vulnerable species. It is possible to go ashore at Lunga which has one of the most varied and accessible seabird colonies including guillemot, razorbill, puffin, kittiwake, fulmar, shag, skua and many more. Puffins spend most of the year at sea and breed from April to July and leave again in early August. Lunga is also an important breeding ground for grey seals.

The Isle of Staffa

Staffa lies about 6 miles west of Mull and is most famous for Fingal’s Cave which inspired Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides Overture”. Tides and wind permitting we can take the tender right into Fingal’s cave as well as circumnavigate the island to views its amazing geological features. The island is also a very important breeding site for puffins, kittiwakes and shags while the surrounding waters attract many more species of seabird as well as grey seals, dolphins, basking sharks, Minke and pilot whales.

The Isles of Ulva & Gometra

Between the Treshnish Isles and the mainland of Mull are the Islands of Ulva and Gometra, linked by a bridge and a tidal beach. The sound between the two islands provides a safe, sheltered anchorage and access for walks ashore. Both islands are home to many rare wildlife on land and sea. We have spotted red deer, feral goats mountain hare, otters and grey seals with dolphins, porpoises and whales frequently seen off shore. Ulva is also special for its large selection of plant life with orchids and Grass of Parnassan common. The visitorsgto Ulva lists the 123 bird species currently recorded on the island; the wide variety of species seen reflects the variety of habitats to be found on the island.

Loch na Keal

East of Gometra is the mainland sea loch Loch na Keal , with the uninhabited Isle of Eorsa at its mouth. It is a very beautiful and tranquil anchorage and a great spot for sunsets. It is also a superb place for wildlife with both white-tailed eagles seen fishing in the loch and golden eagles flying overhead. The Scarisdale rocks are a good place to watch for otters and common seals.

Isle of Iona

South west of Loch na Keal and only one mile off the coast of Mull, the Isle of Iona is rightly famous as a place of religious pilgrimage. However it is also a place of idyllic beauty with its white sand beaches, blue green waters and extensive machair and wild flowers. Wildlife is plentiful on Iona with bottlenosed dophins, common dolphins and Risso dolphins regular visitors. In the waters between Iona and Staffa, Minke whale visit from late June onwards. Orca and pilot whales migrate past and basking sharks appear from July. Iona is a good place to spot seals and otters and one of the best for hearing the elusive corncrake.

David Balfours Bay

Just across the water from Iona, David Balfour’s Bay is a stunningly beautiful anchorage, with a fabulous beach at Erraid, a tidal island on the tip of the Ross of Mull.   It is known as David Balfour’s bay because it is where Robert Louis Stevenson had Davie, in “Kidnapped” being thrown ashore after his ship was wrecked on the Torran rocks. This is a great place for swimming from the boat!

  • Cruise Area

Had a fabulous cruise around Skye and surrounding islands 17 to 24 July. Weather great, with a high pressure sitting over us all week. Amazing encounter with a pod of about 200 dolphins in a flat calm sea, as well as several minke whales, and even a couple of white tailed eagles. Loved the exploration visits to various islands, including the Shiants up north, Raasay, Canna and Eigg and Skye, which we circumnavigated. Food on board fabulous, and plenty of it! Crew of Ritchie, Helen, Lyndsay and Emma very friendly and helpful, and made the week a holiday to remember. Thanks Guys! Would recommend to anyone who loves the sea, small friendly cruises, and a touch of adventure!

Small Ship Cruises in Outer Hebrides

Outer Hebrides Cruise trips sweep guests into the magical world of the Western Isles, an island chain west of Scotland. A part of the greater island cluster, the Hebrides, Outer Hebrides, is separated from the Scottish mainland and the Inner Hebrides by the Minch, the Little Minch, and the Sea of the Hebrides.

Cruises to the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, stop regularly at many of the 15 islands in the chain, all of which are bedrock formed of metamorphic rock. Small ships cruising around Scotland commonly include a spin along the Outer Hebrides.

The civilization dates back to the Roman and Greek empires. After that, the Hebrides were absorbed by the Norse kingdom of Suðreyjar until Scotland received sovereignty in 1266 under the Treaty of Perth.

Top things to do and see on an Outer Hebrides Island Cruise

What's in store for you on your Hebridean cruise to the Western Isles of Scotland? Your itinerary will include some of the following sights and activities.

The Isle of Barra is the second most Southerly inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides cluster. It is known for its beautiful beaches and plentiful wildlife, including seven lochs for brown and sea trout fishing. Visit the highest hill in Barra, Heaval, see the ancient Cille Bharra graveyard, and if your itinerary begins here, fly into the famous Barra airport. You land right on the sand.

The Isle of Eriskay is the home of the Eriskay ponies – a hardy Hebridean breed of small horses. There are only 400 or so left on the whole planet, so this is not a sight to take lightly. It is also known for its strikingly colorful landscape. It's a photographer's dream. It is also favored by birders who want to catch a glimpse of the corncrakes, short-eared owls, hen harriers, and otters.

The Isle of Harris is full of wildlife, from hares to common porpoises, common seals, and many species of birds. An incredible Bird of Prey Trail is at the North Harris Eagle Observatory. The island is full of mountains, making for a visually interesting terrain for photographing the animals you spot.

The Isle of Lewis is the northern part of Harris and Lewis. In contrast to Harris, Lewis is flat, and the sandy beaches are plentiful. See the standing stones called Calanais (Callanish) and fish, cycle, take a nature walk, or do some bird watching.

The Shiant Isles are home to Britain's oldest Puffin and are a wonderful place for birdwatching. It's also an excellent site for whale tours among the impressive sea cliffs.

St. Kilda also has incredible sea cliffs and extremely important seabird breeding locations. The island is volcanic, which lends a special feel to its environment. You can see fulmar, guillemot, and gannets, historic cottages in the village, and the local church, schoolroom, and museum.

The Uists are known for their wild landscapes, white beaches, and a sense of peace and tranquility. Music is a big deal in The Uists. Take a performance at the Claddach Kirkibost Community Center, Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre, and Kildonan Museum, and see the exhibits there. Also, there are otters here; keep an eye out!

Speedboat rides, fishing trips, and cycling are popular activities on many of the islands in the Outer Hebrides. Use a bike to traverse the landscape, turn your trek into a photography cruise, and stop to sample local foods and crafts.

Other common wildlife species you may see in your travels are white-tailed eagles, majestic golden eagles, comical puffins, graceful manx shearwaters, playful otters, dolphins, whales, porpoises, and seals.

Top Tips for visiting the Outer Hebrides on a cruise

The biggest tips for enjoying your experience on a small ship cruising around Scotland are:

  • Bring clothing you can layer- the temperatures can vary and border on chilly.
  • Don't forget your binoculars or camera for shots of the landscape, the beautiful colors of the vegetation, and the animal sightings you're sure to have.
  • We always recommend a dry bag to help protect your electronics on trips to and from shore.
  • Bug repellant for the midges is key to enjoying your outdoor activities unless you’re traveling in the winter.
  • Comfortable shoes are essential when you set out to see monuments and wildlife or walk along the beaches.

Best time to cruise the Outer Hebrides Islands

If you can plan to make the most out of your time in Scotland, the best time to take an Outer Hebrides Cruise may be July. The weather is most likely lovely, and you can see many seabirds in various stages of development. Average daytime temperatures reach 16 degrees Celsius.

Some warn against visiting the islands from April 10 to May because the sheep are lambing, and it's best to leave the ewes undisturbed.

It's riskiest to take your Outer Hebrides Cruise in October through March, but there is still good weather to be had then. Remember that the later it gets in the year, the earlier it gets dark, and temperatures can drop to nearly 0 degrees Celsius.

Spring and autumn months see temperatures between 8 to 12 degrees Celsius.

Where do Outer Hebrides cruises depart from?

Make your way to Glasgow airport on the mainland of Scotland, and you're nearly ready to begin your adventure in the Outer Hebrides. Your Scottish small-ship cruise will usually include complimentary assistance from the airport to your departure point on Oban, Tobermory, Inverness, or Kyle of Lochalsh.

Each itinerary will be different, so please check yours for specific details and contact us with any questions about your travel.

We’re here to help, 24/7.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

cruises around inner hebrides

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
