Art’s Dune Tours: The Best Way To Explore Cape Cod’s Sand Dunes

While Cape Cod is known for its stunning beaches and coastline, the sand dunes in this region are an equally incredible landscape to experience. For the last 75 years, Art’s Dune Tours has been providing unforgettable adventures by taking people out into the Province Lands dunes, and showing them some of the most unique landscapes in the entire country.

If you’re planning a trip to Cape Cod, and are looking to get out into the sand dunes, this post is all about what to expect with Art’s Dune Tours, and why it should be on your itinerary.

Art's Dune Tours is one of the most exciting experiences you can have on Cape Cod.

This tour was hosted by the Cape Cod Tourism Board. All opinions are my own.

The History Of Art’s Dune Tours & Provincetown’s Sand Dunes

Art’s Dune Tours started with a man named Art and his 1936 Ford Woody. Art began as a taxi service that brought people out to the dunes, which eventually evolved into a tour company. Stemmed from his passion for the region, and his love and knowledge of the dunes, Art’s Dune Tours quickly became one of the most exciting things to do in Provincetown. Art continued to do tours for 50 years, and his son, Rob, shared that he truly loved every minute of it.

Rob now owns the company, and he’s just as passionate as his father, and excited to take people out into the dunes to provide not just a tour, but a meaningful experience.

The landscapes you'll experience on a tour with Art's Dune Tours are otherworldly.

In 1961, when President Kennedy established the Cape Cod National Seashore, this land became protected from any further development, and its natural beauty has remained untouched since. During the tour, I learned that 70% of Provincetown is sand, and also that the Cape Cod National Seashore is the largest protected coast in the U.S. Special permits are needed to drive in the dunes, and with some of the dunes reaching 110 feet tall, this is really quite an amazing experience!

During the tour, you'll be able to get out of the car at some of the best viewing locations in the dunes for some awesome picture opportunities.

What To Expect On Your Art’s Dune Tour

In a nutshell, lots of fun, incredible views and interesting stories about the history of the dunes.

Tours will start at Art’s Dune Tour offices in Provincetown, a short walk from MacMillan Pier, and most tours last about one hour or so. From there, you’ll hop into one of their Suburbans, and head toward the dunes, which are only a 5-minute or so drive away. Each vehicle seats up to 6 people, and are equipped with air conditioning for a comfortable ride.

I was so excited to get started! Art's Dune Tours are all provided inside comfortable suburban SUV's for a comfortable experience.

Once you arrive at the entrance for the dunes, you’ll stop for a quick moment to allow the guide to let air out of the tires so the vehicle can easily navigate the soft sand. And then you’re off! You’ll ride up and down the dunes (some of them pretty steep) pass by the dune shacks, stop to admire the local foliage and have moments to get out of the car and take some photos.

The dune shacks are one of the most famous things in Cape Cod, and you'll hear all about their history on the tour.

Tour guides for Art’s will share so much interesting history of the Province Lands, dunes, artist shacks and local ecosystem. I was lucky enough to be on a tour with Rob himself, and he was able to point out and share his knowledge on all the beautiful flora that exists amongst the dunes, including mosses, lichen, rugosas and so much more. We even got to pass a natural cranberry bog, which was surprising to see in the middle of these vast dunes.

The vegetation that exists out in the dunes is really quite interesting, and your tour guide will be able to point out everything to you.

The History Of The Dune Shacks In Provincetown

Wondering what the story is with the dune shacks? Great! I’d love to tell you all about them. You’ll also hear many more stories on your tour, but here are some highlights.

The dune shacks are quite famous in Provincetown, and throughout all of Cape Cod, and date back to the 1920s. The 19 shacks were built by members of the Coast Guard as a place for their families to stay during visits, or as a place of rest on their days off. They’re scattered amongst the sand dunes, and many of them offer breathtaking views of the coastline.

You'll pass by a few dune shacks on your tour with Art's Dune Tours, and learn about how they were built, and what they're used for today.

As the Provincetown artist colony gained popularity, artists began using the shacks during their Cape Cod visits. Famed artists and writers like E.E. Cummings, Jackson Pollock, Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, Harry Kemp and Normal Mailer have all stayed in the dune shacks. In fact, Jack Kerouac wrote part of On The Road while staying in one of the shacks.

Many of the shacks became property of the government in 1961 when Kennedy established the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Can You Stay In The Provincetown Dune Shacks?

Yes you can, but it will require some work and a bit of luck. The government partners with non-profit organizations to host local and aspiring artists and writers in the shacks. Imagine, as an artist or writer, the amazing inspiration you’d get by being surrounded by such remote, natural beauty just outside your door each day.

Would you stay in a Provincetown dune shack? There is no indoor plumbing or electricity, but as you can imagine, the views are breathtaking.

Those hoping to stay in one of the dune shacks can apply for residency, and applications are accepted by a lottery system (this is where the luck comes into play). Samples of your work are required during the application process.

Some things to keep in mind to appreciate a residency at the shacks even more: There is no indoor plumbing or electricity at the shacks. And they’re very secluded, meaning you’ve got quite the hike through soft sand if you’re in need of additional food or supplies. It’s also common to encounter wildlife like snakes and bugs during your stay. It’s not for the faint of heart. But it’s also considered an honor to stay in one of the famed shacks.

Do The Tours Harm The Local Ecosystem?

Absolutely not, and this one of the first questions I asked on the tour. Art’s Dune Tours has to get a special permit each year for every vehicle in their fleet, and the tours stay on the access “road,” which is the main path that runs through the dunes. Guides don’t stray from the main path to keep the vegetation in-tact.

You'll see so much natural vegetation out in the dunes.

During the tour, you’ll witness the deep respect between tour guides and the dunes, and one of the main goals of the tours is to educate visitors on how important this area is for the local ecosystem, as well as what a special place it is. This was the most impressive part of the tour for me.

I was so surprised to pass through this tree-lined path out in the dunes.

Art’s Dune Tour Options

Art’s Dune Tours offers a few different options, with some really great add-on experiences. Below is a breakdown of tours you can arrange with them.

Daily Tours

This is the tour I experienced, which will take you around the dunes for about an hour. These tours run daily at 9:45a, 11a, 1p, 2:30p and 4p from May 1-October 31. Times may change a bit later in the fall season, so be sure to give them a call to confirm if you plan to visit after Labor Day.

Sunset Tours

There are 3 different Sunset Tour options to customize your perfect evening. You can go for either a regular sunset tour, a tour with dinner, and finally, a tour with both dinner and a bonfire. For these tours, you’ll ride through the dunes for 1 hour, and then drive down to the beach to watch the sunset, have dinner and start the bonfire.

Art’s Dune Tours also offers a few other options that include art, photography, kayaking and ventures out to Race Point Lighthouse. Click here to check out these tours on their website.

Art's Dune Tours offers a lot of different tour options that you can customize for your perfect experience.

How Much Do Art’s Dune Tours Cost?

Daily tours cost $38.11 per person (as of 2022), which includes taxes and fees, and there is a 4-person minimum for each tour to operate.

For sunset tours, prices start at $56.65 per person (as of 2022), and will go up from there if you choose to add on dinner or the bonfire experience.

For all other tour experiences, call them directly for pricing.

Does Art’s Dune Tours Operate If It’s Raining?

They sure do! In fact, the day of my tour, it was drizzling rain off and on, and it was still an incredible experience. Tours run rain or shine since you’re inside a vehicle, and protected from the elements.

Art's Dune Tours operate rain or shine, since they're inside a vehicle.

Are Art’s Dune Tours Suitable For Children?

Definitely. If you need a car seat, you’ll need to bring one with you. But other than that, this is a really fun adventure that children will love.

Arts Dune Tours: The Ultimate Cape Cod Experience

Location: Provincetown, Massachusetts

The dunes of Cape Cod have drawn writers, artists and musicians for years. It’s desolate beauty has inspired some of our most well known songs and movies. The best way to visit the dunes is with Arts Dune Tours out of Provincetown.

provincetown dune tour

Arts Dune Tours has been in business for 75 years. It began with founder Arthur Costa offering a taxi service from P-town out to the dune shacks. Now protected by the National Park Service, Art’s Dune Tours is the only company to get a yearly permit to drive through the dunes.

I booked our tour over the phone. There are several times throughout the day to choose from (at time of booking our offerings were 10 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3 pm). The daily tours last one hour. Tours run rain or shine from mid May to November 15th.

There are also sunset tours that last two hours. Add-on experiences such as clambakes, kayaking and a tour of Race Point Light can be arranged.

Art's Dune Tours

Our dune tour left right from the center of Provincetown. The four-wheel-drive Suburbans have air-conditioning and comfortably fit up to 6 people. It is basically a private tour because you will only be with your group. Our driver had a negative covid test that day and there was plexi glass between the driver and the rest of the car.

Children of all ages are welcome on the tours. If you want your child in a car seat, you will have to bring your own as they are not provided. Otherwise, the kids can just use a seatbelt or sit on a parent’s lap.

Our tour was jam packed with history from the moment we got in the car. We saw what was left of the life-saving station whose mission it was to help survivors of shipwrecks in the late 1800’s. One time it took two attempts to get up and over the tallest dune which was close to 100 feet tall.

The landscape of the dunes is really unique. The enormous sand deposits were left behind when Ice Age glaciers receded. The peaks and valleys rise and fall like waves and the grass is beautifully windswept. Any refuge from the wind allows a tree to take root, yet it will grow sideways. It is hard to believe that anything could survive in that desolate of a habitat.

We stopped at the top of one of the dunes from a 10 minute break and were able to take photos.

provincetown dune tour

One of the most interesting parts of the tour was learning about the dune shacks and the visitors who sought out the isolation of the dunes to let their creativity flow.

Table of Contents

History of the dune shacks

Provincetown has always been an artistic community and people seeking inspiration began heading out to the dunes.

In 1920, people began using the scraps of shipwrecks and parts of the old life-saving station to build shacks.

Tennessee Williams wrote a Street Car Named Desire from his shack and it is said that Marlon Brando walked through the dunes shouting “STELLA!” in an attempt to audition for the role.

The shacks have hosted great minds such as Henry David Thoreau, Jack Kerouac, Eugene O’Neill, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Norman Mailer, Mark Rothko, and E.E. Cummings, to name a few.

Dune Shack

Can you stay in a dune shack?

The easy answer is yes, but you will have to fight for it. There are week-long residence opportunities for artists, musicians and writers. A non-profit in Provincetown helps the NPS with the stays for the summer residency programs. The would-be residents must apply, and are chosen by jury selection or by lottery.

There are still 19 dune shacks remaining. These primitive shacks have never been wired with electricity or running water. You will have a bare wooden shack with an outhouse. It may come prepackaged with mice. There is no coming and going. You will be delivered to your shack and your ride will return a week later. With that said, those who have experienced the dune shacks claim it to be an existential experience.

provincetown dune tour

What does Arts Dune Tour cost?

Number of People Per Truck- (There is a minimum price for 1-4 people)

1-4 people     $140.08

5  people        $175.10

6 people         $210.12

Are the dune tours harmful to the environment?

No, they are not. This was a worry of mine before the tour. We only drove on the fire access road that is there to reach the shacks. You won’t be off-roading willy nilly, ripping up the dunes or crushing piping plovers. The company has to apply for a permit each year, so access is very regulated. The vehicles they use are outfitted with special fat tires that don’t damage the fragile dune ecosystem.

Are the tours dog friendly?

No, dogs are not allowed in the vehicles.

Taking a dune tour with Arts Dune Tours is a really unique experience you won’t find anywhere else in the world. We learned a lot about the history of the area and had fun doing it. We would highly suggest checking it out. Growing up, we visited P-town almost every summer but never left the main street. Provincetown has so much more to offer than shopping. Our other favorite experience was visiting Long Point .

In closing, I will leave you with the lyrics of Rupert Holmes Piña Colada Song , so that it will be stuck in your head as it has been in mine.

The classic Provincetown shoreline lights up as the sun sets, and the golden hour makes the boat and those on it shine. Our Provincetown sails are all BYOB and nibbles. Pack a picnic with your favorite hors de ouvres and drinks to enjoy as the sun sets; or, check out the options made just for our trips by our partner  Perfect Picnic Ptown ! As with our daysails we provide assorted seltzer waters, which our crew will happily distribute after we set our sails.

Our sunset sails find a balance between being tranquil and rowdy. In light of this we do not have a youth price for our sunset sails, and discourage those with small children from riding with us for our evening sail.

Although our capacity for the Bloodhound is 34 people, we like to limit groups to 8 or less during our sunset sails so that each of our guests (up to 34) feels at home on the boat. Please note: we welcome friendly dogs on all of our sails, but ask that you call us (508- 542-2996) to let us know if you will have a fur baby along with you.

Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum

The Pilgrim Monument was founded in 1892 to commemorate the Mayflower Pilgrims’ first landing in the New World in Provincetown, in November 1620. The Pilgrims spent 5 weeks in Provincetown exploring the tip of Cape Cod, before they sailed on to Plymouth.

President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the monument in 1907. In 1910, President William Howard Taft dedicated the finished 252-foot tower.  The Monument is the tallest granite structure in the United States.  The Provincetown Museum opened at the base of the monument, to educate the public about Provincetown’s role in Pilgrim and American history.

In 2020, the museum debuted a new permanent exhibit, “ Our Story: The Complicated Relationship of the Indigenous Wampanoag and the Mayflower Pilgrims. ” The interactive and technological exhibit offers an accurate story of the Wampanoag Tribe’s history on Cape Cod, including the 1620 arrival of the Mayflower from England.

Cape Cod Beach Shack And Ocean

CHECK AVAILABILITY

Art’s dune tour :: celebrating 70 years in provincetown.

Accompanied by the stories of the seashore wildlife and the locallegends, the sights you see on a tour are simply mesmerizing: wispy beach grass, dark green pine trees, deep red beach plums, and the shoreline for as long as your eyes can see. Along the hidden dune trails, you will find the famous “dune shacks” where legendary artists and writers like Eugene O’Neill and Harry Kemp created some of their most significant works of word and art. The tour also takes you to the remains of the Peaked Hill Life Saving Station and shares a story of the brave “life savers” who rescued thousands from the doomed fishing shipwrecks.

The Provincetown Cape Cod National Seashore is part of a federal reserve and these protected lands are home to a myriad of rare birds and wildlife. Make sure you take a camera for some special memories with this delightful backdrop of the Cape Cod Sand Dunes.

Daily Trips begin at 10 AM and end with a special sunset tour at approximately 5:30 PM. Times might vary during the season and reservations are recommended. The Dune Tour fleet is enclosed and air conditioned for an enjoyable ride over the pristine lands. Each vehicle holds six to eight passengers and the sunset tour can include a dinner by the fire option. Try the true New England clam chowder, steamed lobster, clams, corn, and of course a famous Portuguese kale soup!

This fall, you might enjoy this beautiful experience absolutely free with The Provincetown Hotel at Gabriel’s! Stay 3 nights between September 5th to October 31st and we will arrange an unforgettable dune ride on your behalf. Use the promo code FALL when booking or reach us at (508) 487-3232 for more details.

When Only the Best Will Do Let me start with "WOW" to describe my experience at this hotel. I can't say enough good things about my stay here.

This Hotel couldn't be in a more perfect spot in one of the GREATEST Towns in Cape Cod. Centrally located in the heart of the town, nestled under the main focal point

"The Monument" you must climb it to the top....what a view!

Truly one of the best hotels I've ever visited This is better than any 5-star hotel I've ever visited! The decor is tasteful and feels more like a home than a hotel, and the rooms are themed without being kitschy like many of the cape B&Bs.

The reception was friendly and the exterior design is just gorgeous; the courtyard was a great spot to hang out.

Just a Wonderful Place We loved sitting out on the balcony late into the night. It is right around the corner from all the excitement of Commercial street with its many clubs, restaurants, and shopping, yet it was so peaceful and quiet in the evening/night. The garden area and koi pond was very beautiful and peaceful.

Warm inviting and absolutely perfect Our second year in a row staying here in Provincetown. We discovered this place last year and so happy we did. Centrally located to town easy walk to either west end or east end. Pet friendly rooms available. Staff is amazing and friendly; owners are lovely and helpful.

Authors: Marco & Angelo

We own the Candleberry Inn, a boutique bed and breakfast in central Cape Cod. We're glad to share our recommendations on all the great things to explore throughout Cape Cod.

16 Stops to Include on Your Provincetown Day Trip Itinerary

One of the best things about a Cape Cod getaway is that there are so many beautiful towns to explore. A Provincetown day trip offers a little bit of everything — history, shopping, outdoor activities, and tours. And in between these activities, there’s great food to eat at the town’s restaurants.

At Candleberry Inn Cape Cod Bed & Breakfast , we’ve put together a sample itinerary for a day trip to Provincetown Massachusetts. If you’re looking for even more things to do, check out our Cape Cod getaway guide .

Get our free Cape Cod Vacation Guide, full of the best things to do in Cape Cod. The best activities, restaurants, museums, events, views, and much more!

Have Breakfast at Candleberry Inn

Before you leave for your Provincetown day trip, you’ll want to have breakfast at Candleberry Inn . We make a fresh, gourmet breakfast with local ingredients from area farms and stands every morning.

We serve a course of fresh fruit, which is personally chosen by innkeeper Angelo early each morning. The fruit goes well with our hot main dish, which is inspired by our Italian heritage — alternating between savory and sweet daily. We’re happy to work around dietary restrictions with a heads-up.

Additionally, we offer a full drink service with high-quality coffee, espresso, juice, and tea. We can make you a Brewster Sunrise too, which is a tasty Cape Cod specialty breakfast drink.

Our breakfast will give you the energy that you need for the drive to Provincetown. In less than an hour, you’ll be ready to experience all that the town has to offer.

Morning Things to Do in Provincetown Cape Cod

When you arrive in Provincetown, you’ll have time to experience a couple of things before it’s time for lunch. Here’s what we recommend first for your Provincetown day trip.

Explore the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum

As you approach Provincetown Massachusetts, the Pilgrim Monument is the first thing that you’ll probably notice. This 252-foot-tall monument commemorates the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims.

In 1907, the cornerstone of the monument was laid by President Theodore Roosevelt. Then, it was dedicated by President William Howard Taft in 1910. Today, you can follow the 116 stairs and 60 ramps to the top for a view of the harbor, Provincetown lighthouses, and the distant Boston skyline.

Also in 1910, the first museum building on Cape Cod was opened at the base of the monument. The Provincetown Museum is home to permanent exhibits that highlight the Pilgrims’ arrival, the town’s maritime history, the monument’s construction, and the early days of modern theatre.

Shop on Commercial Street

Since it’s so close to the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, now is a great time to explore Commercial Street. This street is the heart of commerce in the town — hence the name.

Commercial St runs for 2.5 miles from Route 6A to Pilgrims’ First Landing Park. For much of it, you’ll pass dozens of cute boutiques, galleries, gift shops, and more. The lively waterfront resembles that of a New England coastal village.

Since 1916 Provincetown has been known as an artist’s colony, attracting painters of every genre mainly because of the quality of light that is unique in this location of the Cape and the country. There are several dozen art studios and galleries on Commercial Street, that you may visit, and personally meet the artists – and maybe buy some art.

Some of our favorite galleries include Hilda Neilly, Borsari Gallery, Cortile Gallery, and Thanassi Gallery, just to name a few. You can also visit the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) which showcases 100+ years of local arts and culture.

Provincetown

Grab Lunch at a Provincetown Restaurant

While you’re on Commercial Street, it’s the perfect time to stop by a restaurant for lunch before exploring more of Provincetown. Below are a few of our favorite lunch spots.

Far Land Provisions

It’s safe to say that Far Land Provisions is always a bustling spot. The corner store and deli has an on-site bakery with made-to-order sandwiches and prepared foods.

For 15 years, the sandwiches have been named the best by Cape Cod Life magazine. Far Land Provisions only uses the finest, local ingredients, and you can get a treat for dessert or a snack for later as well.

Lobster Pot

There’s nothing like a lobster meal, and you can experience some of the freshest lobster in the country at Lobster Pot . The lobster is made in a variety of ways — baked stuffed, boiled, pan-roasted, and more.

Also, there are many other seafood options on the menu — calamari, clams, scallops, shrimp, and a range of baked, blackened, braised, and grilled fish. There are chicken, steak, and burger options too.

If you want lobster takeout for a picnic, stop by the Lobster Pot Express location down the street.

The Canteen

With a style rooted in classic seafood shack tradition, The Canteen makes all of its dishes from scratch. It’s known for its lobster roll, which you can order hot or cold.

You can get other rolls — such as clam and oyster — as well as seafood plates, sandwiches, tacos, and more. The French fries are cut fresh from Maine potatoes daily. Gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options are also available.

Provincetown

Provincetown Things to Do in the Afternoon

After filling your belly with delicious food, you’ll be ready to take on some outdoor activities on your Provincetown day trip. We recommend biking and hiking to area beaches and lighthouses — routes for which we’ve detailed below.

Bike to Race Point Lighthouse & Beach

Not far from Commercial Street, you can stop by Provincetown Bike Rentals and take a bike ride on the Provincetown Lands Bike Trail . A fantastic place to start on the trail is the Province Lands Visitor Center , which is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore and is located off Race Point Road on a dune.

You can follow the bike trail to Race Point Lighthouse and Race Point Beach. The current lighthouse was built in 1876 and remains an active aid to the United States Coast Guard.

While you’re here, you can visit the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station Museum where breeches buoy rescue reenactments are done in the summer. After you’ve explored all of Race Point, you can follow the trail south to Herring Cove Beach.

Keep in mind that this trail has some sharp turns, steep hills, and tunnels.

Hike to Wood End Light & Long Point Light Station

From Herring Cove Beach on Cape Cod Bay, you can follow a hiking trail to Boy Beach, beginning a trek along the curl at the tip of the Cape that extends into Provincetown Harbor. This small peninsula has a 6.4-mile loop trail that takes you to two lighthouses and beaches.

The first tower that you’ll come across is Wood End Light. The 39-foot lighthouse was built in 1896 and is accompanied by a keeper’s house, oil house, and storage shed.

Continuing to follow the trail, you’ll eventually come to Long Point Beach. Keep going to the very tip of the curl, and you’ll come to Long Point Light Station. This tower was built in 1875, is identical to Wood End Light, and is powered by solar panels.

When you’re ready to return, you can follow the trail back and turn north to cross the Provincetown Causeway, which crosses the harbor. At the end, you’ll come to Pilgrims’ First Landing Park, which is at the end of Commercial Street.

Provincetown

Savor a Provincetown Cape Cod Dinner

After biking and hiking during your Provincetown day trip, you’re likely to have worked up an appetite. Fortunately, there are several fantastic restaurants on Commercial St where you can enjoy dinner. Here are a few of our top picks.

The Mews Restaurant & Cafe

Since 1964, The Mews Restaurant & Cafe has been providing a comfortable place for visitors to enjoy good drinks and food. The gourmet cuisine is made with the finest seasonal ingredients — including grass-fed meat and wild game, free-range poultry, fresh seafood, and organic produce.

You can eat in either the lower-level dining room with views of the beach or in the upstairs dining room with a view of the harbor. In both cases, you’ll get an award-winning experience.

Frequented by locals, Fanizzi’s waterfront restaurant on Cape Cod Bay in Provincetown is open year-round and has an amazing menu that is sure to please. Enjoy your favorite American seafood entrees and sides in a casual atmosphere.

Strangers & Saints

At Strangers & Saints , you can experience a menu that’s influenced by Greece, Italy, Morocco, Spain, and Turkey. You can order seafood, pasta, and more; and all of the dough is made fresh every day. The menu includes some awesome cocktails, beer on tap, and a nice selection of wine too.

Jimmy’s HideAway

Considered a “hidden jewel” among the restaurants in Provincetown, Jimmy’s HideAway serves a range of deliciously hearty American food — choice meats, local seafood, a special comfort food menu, and nightly specials. And, the cocktails are made with top-shelf liquors and fresh fruits and vegetables.

End Your Provincetown Day Trip With a Sunset Dunes Tour

If you have dinner early enough, you can schedule a sunset tour with Art’s Dune Tours afterward. Watching the sky change color over the Atlantic Ocean from atop the dunes is a magical way to end your Provincetown day trip. The tour lasts for 2 to 2.5 hours.

You have the option to book a sunset tour with dinner or with dinner and a bonfire.
