Lab Baseball Travel Teams

2022-2023 lab baseball teams.

Our organization is looking for youth baseball players from the Cape Cod area with aspirations to have long term success in the game of baseball. We will be hosting tryouts for the 9-16U age levels.

9-12U Teams

  • With the younger groups, our focus will primarily be on building fundamental skills, baseball knowledge, and instilling the foundat ions of a lifelong love of baseball
  • Full spring season in the New Balance Select Baseball League
  • In addition to league games, teams will play a 6-10 game fall schedule
  • Our 10-12U teams will practice throughout the fall, winter, and spring, both in a team and a small group/individual setting
  • We will introduce our players to basic strength and conditioning concepts (push ups, planks, air squats, band work, etc.) throughout the year

13-14U Teams

  • The 13U and 14U teams will continue to build upon many of the same concepts our 10-12U teams are focused on
  • This includes developing a skill set that will help them not only progress to, but to succeed at the high school varsity level
  • These "skills that scale" will set up our players to be able to start separating themselves from their peers as they enter the high school ranks
  • New England Elite Baseball League throughout the spring and early summer
  • Will compete in a number of high profile tournaments around the Northeast
  • We believe that practice and individual/small group training in this age range is just as, or even more important than game play at this level
  • The only way to adequately prepare for that is to be dedicated to a full year practice and training schedule

15-16U Teams

  • At the 15U-16U levels, we want to continue to ensure that our players have success at the high school level and start preparing them for the demands of high school and college baseball
  • As with all of our teams, our primary objective at this age group is the individual skill development of all of our players
  • In addition to preparing our players physically for high school and college baseball, we want to help aid in the process of finding the school that is the right fit for them
  • Centered around many of the bigger college recruiting tournaments and events in the Northeast throughout the summer
  • Mid-week games against other travel teams in the area
  • 10-12 games in the fall and in at least 1 tournaments
  • Practices and training will occur throughout most of the year for these teams
  • During the high school season, we will be focused on individual and small group sessions, with team practices happening more in the off-season

Playing for Lab Baseball will entail a serious, year-long commitment, which will require an above-average work ethic from each player. We are looking for young baseball players with the highest level of commitment and work ethic. Players are encouraged to play other sports, however we do expect them to find time throughout the year to work on baseball.

Our #1 priority as a program is individual player development. We want every player who walks through our doors to be better when they leave than when they walked in.

Family Guide to the Cape Cod Baseball League

Posted on Published: 06/29/2023

If this idea of watching a great baseball game while enjoying a summer evening sounds appealing to you, you’ll want to check out the Cape Cod Baseball League. This collegiate summer baseball league takes place on Cape Cod throughout most of the summer, and it’s the perfect way to see some great baseball during your Cape Cod family vacation .

This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no cost to you. All opinions are my own.

What is the Cape Cod Baseball League?

The Cape Cod Baseball League, takes place in the summer, between mid-June and mid-August. There are ten teams representing the various Cape Cod towns , and there’s both an East and a West division. Like the MLB, there’s both an all-star game as well as playoffs.

The Cape Cod Baseball League is comprised of college players, many of whom will eventually be drafted into the major leagues. Therefore, the games are quite competitive and are very fun to watch. The league is currently celebrating its 100-year anniversary, although it has roots further back into the 1800s.

Teams and Venues of the Cape Cod Baseball League

The Cape Cod Baseball League has ten different leagues located in the various towns around Cape Cod. These include the following (their home field is listed in parentheses):

  • The Bourne Braves (Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School)
  • The Brewster Whitecaps (Stony Brook Elementary School))
  • The Chatham Anglers (Veteran’s Field)
  • The Cotuit Kettleers (Lowell Park)
  • The Falmouth Commodores (Arnie Allen Diamond at Guv Fuller Field)
  • The Harwich Mariners (Monomoy Regional High School)
  • The Hyannis Harbor Hawks (Pope John Paul II High School)
  • The Orleans Firebirds (Nauset Regional Middle School))
  • The Wareham Gateman (Wareham High School) – note that this location is actually on mainland Massachusetts, west of Cape Cod
  • The Yarmouth -Dennis Red Sox (Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School)

Going to a Cape Cod Baseball League Game

Cape Cod Baseball League games are held from mid-June to mid-August each year. It’s easy to check the website of the league and/or the specific team to see the time, date, and location of the games.

Cape Cod Baseball League games are free, which is great for families. It can be frustrating to pay for regular baseball league tickets and then have your kids want to leave. This way, you can go to the game, get the experience, and leave whenever your kids are ready to go. Parking is also free.

The Cape Cod League is a great introduction to baseball for kids, and the talent is excellent. These games are really fun to watch.

Tickets aren’t sold and are not required. Just find the time of the game and arrive in advance for the best seating options. Our home team, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, plays at the local high school. Doors open 90 minutes before game time.

Each field has different seating options. Most families, however, bring their own chairs, or a blanket to watch the game. While bleachers may be available, you shouldn’t count on them as an option, since seating is usually limited.

While tickets aren’t sold, donations are typically solicited at the entrance. So, bring along some cash if you’d like to contribute.

There will also be merchandise available for purchase. At our field, there are t-shirts, long-sleeved tees, crewneck sweatshirts, hoodies, hats, and more. Cape Cod Baseball League merchandise is also a great gift idea for the baseball lover in your life.

Snacks and food can also be purchased. I also have seen many people bring their own food. It’s really up to you. Typically the games take place in the evenings, so you can spend the day on your other Cape Cod activities with your family, and then head to the field for a game.

If you’ve got kids who love to play baseball or softball, they may want to bring their gloves. Kids are encouraged to run and catch (and keep) foul balls, and many really seem to enjoy the chase.

While you may be tempted to just see a game in the area near where you are vacationing on Cape Cod, I’d encourage you to consider visiting other fields/teams. This can be an easy and affordable way to see the different towns on Cape Cod.

Games do get rained out if the weather isn’t cooperating, so keep an eye on the teams’ social media profiles if the weather seems to be a little questionable. That way, you won’t head to the field to find out that the game has been postponed.

Whether you are a seasoned baseball fan, or it’s your first time seeing a game, you’ll have a great experience seeing a Cape League game.

Where to Stay

We have lots of recommendations for where to stay on Cape Cod. Our favorite Cape Cod family resorts are listed in this post, while our favorite luxury Cape Cod resorts are listed in this post. You can also search the map below to find both hotels and vacation homes in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

The games are free and don’t have tickets. You can just show up and attend.

While there may be bleachers available, it’s best to bring your own chairs/blankets to the games.

Merchandise for the home team is offered at games. You can also find merchandise for the league available to purchase online .

Collegiate athletes play in the Cape Cod Baseball League. You’ll hear each team listed when the announcement for the player is made.

These games are definitely popular with both vacationers and locals. But they aren’t nearly as crowded as a major league game (or even minor league games). It’s really a great way to see a game.

Cape Cod Baseball League Schedule Released

cape cod travel baseball

BARNSTABLE – The 2024 Cape Cod Baseball League will start on Saturday, June 15, with a full slate of Opening Day games.

There will be no scheduled doubleheaders and teams will each play a 40-game regular season schedule with divisional opponents facing each other five times, while cross-divisional opponents will match up four times each.

Each Cape League team will host their home opening game during the first weekend, a home game on either July 3rd or July 4th, and two home games in August.

“Optimizing our 2024 schedule will allow us to play more games during the height of the summer season, while bringing more stability to our team rosters,” said Eric Zmuda, Commissioner of the Cape League.

The Opening Day games on June 15 will be highlighted by a rematch of last year’s Cape League Championship Series, as the defending champion Bourne Braves host the Orleans Firebirds.

Last year’s Cape League Championship Series had over 17,000 fans in attendance over the three-game series.

Cape League’s All-Star Game will return to Guv Fuller Field this year, home of the Falmouth Commodores, for the first time since 2003 on Saturday, July 27, marking the eighth time they have hosted the event.

A notable change to the 2024 Cape League season will be an adjusted playoff format where the top four teams in each division will qualify for the Cape League Playoffs.

Teams will play a single-elimination game in the opening round of the playoffs, while the second round and championship series will be best-of-three series.

For more information about the league and to view the full schedule visit their website .

Cape Cod League commitments: 16 expected players from New England

' src=

The return of the Cape Cod Baseball League was one of the highlights of the year for New England baseball fans.

As the weight of the pandemic continues to become less of an obstruction to our normal lives, we can only expect the Cape League to return in 2022. In fact, Cape League team executives are already signing players to contracts in preparation for the 2022 season.

Before we get to our list of 16 Cape League commits, please note that this is in no way a final accounting of New England players who will earn roster spots on Cape League teams in 2022. Team executives are still very much in the introductory process of filling rosters. Some top 2022 MLB Draft prospects will opt to play out the 2022 college season before deciding whether to commit to playing on the Cape. College players on teams that advance deep into the NCAA Tournament may choose to opt out of the Cape League season. Injuries can also impact player commitments.

For now, here's a pre-Christmas look at 16 New England players who have already committed to spending the 2022 summer on the Cape.

Donation to be made in honor of Matt DiTullio

After having a tremendous 2019 season for the MetroWest Orioles in the Boston Metro Baseball League, Matt DiTullio was awarded the 2019 'Most Valuable Player' in the MetroWest Division. Shortly thereafter, he was sadly diagnosed with leukemia and faced a two-year battle fighting the horrible disease.

After receiving his diagnosis, Matt called his manager Chris Currie to let him know that he might not be able to play in the upcoming 2020 season, and felt like he was letting the team down. Matt vowed to fight the disease and be back on the field with his teammates as soon as possible. Unfortunately, on August 9, 2021 at the age of 36, Matt lost his battle and passed peacefully with his family by his side.

In honor of Matt, we will be presenting a donation to his wife Lindsay and daughter Ellie at this year's tournament on behalf of all the participating players.

if you would like to help honor Matt and his family by making a donation, please reach out to Chris Currie .

Visit All 10 Cape Cod Baseball League Parks in One Weekend

by Jeff Shaw

cape cod travel baseball

The month of June is known for many things; graduations, maximum daylight, outdoor concerts and endless replays of Alice Cooper’s Schools Out [for summer]. But on Cape Cod, the month of June means the beginning of a wonderful tradition and summer rite of passage: the Cape Cod Baseball League .

If you need a refresher, ten teams located between Wareham (just off-Cape) and Orleans, (Lower Cape), compete annually in this officially NCAA sanctioned summer league. (Though, as many books point out , the origins of organized baseball on Cape Cod are local and amateur.) Most professional scouts love to be assigned to the Cape League because of the concentration of teams. As an example, the distance between Wareham and Orleans, the two farthest outposts of the 10-team league, is a mere 47 miles. Conversely, teams in leagues in larger geographical areas may be separated by 47 miles each!

Indeed, closeness and geography makes the Cape Cod Baseball League special. So why not see for yourself and visit each team’s ballpark this summer? Below is a plan to do just that…in a  single weekend . You read that right, it can be done:

Double Header Weekends . The weekends of June 17-19 (Father’s Day) and June 24-26 both have double headers on Sunday. The earliest double header begins at 2pm (at Cotuit) and the latest double header begins at 5pm (at Chatham). Meaning you can easily catch three complete games and probably see even more games if you only stay for a few innings and move along. Watching three complete games sounds like the ultimate ‘summer catch’ [Cape League-based movie pun intended]!

Last Weekend . The July 29-31 games are the last regular season weekend games. If you are savvy, you can catch games (heading East) at Hyannis (6pm) Harwich (6:30pm), Orleans (6:30pm) and Chatham (7pm) on Friday; start Saturday in Brewster (4pm) and then proceed West to Wareham (6pm—crossing the bridge should be okay on a Saturday), then head back over the bridge and down to Falmouth (6pm). On Sunday, start in YD at 4:30pm, then head West to the second half of the Cotuit game (4:30pm) and then the middle of the game at Bourne (6pm).

Unique Game Locations . Four Cape League teams will travel off-Cape for regular season game play. The first game between YD vs. Hyannis will be Wednesday, July 20 at 11:00am at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford, home of the Class AA Hartford Yard Goats, affiliated with the Colorado Rockies. The second game between Bourne vs. Wareham will be Monday, July 25 at 6:45pm at Polar Park in Worchester, home of the Worcester Red Sox. And of course, don’t forget the All-Star Game on Saturday, July 23 at 6:00pm in Wareham.

MLB notes: Cape Cod father determined to finish ballpark journey he and late son started together

Jackson Yelle and his father Scott, both of North Eastham, pose for a family picture at Fenway Park. The Yelles had planned to visit all 30 MLB ballparks together before Jackson was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident last spring at age 21. (Courtesy of Scott Yelle)

Catching a game at every major league ballpark is a bucket list goal for many parents and their kids. The chance to travel the country, meet new people and watch different players is a rare and special opportunity to build lasting memories, but few families actually get the chance to make that dream a reality.

For Scott Yelle and his son Jackson, however, it was a journey worth taking.

“It wasn’t really our intention to start, honestly I was just a dad wanting to take my son to his first baseball game,” Yelle said. “I think we had like four or five under our belt. I’m not sure where we were driving, probably to a ballgame some weekend, and I said, ‘Hey, we should see if we can get to all 30 in our lifetime together.’ ”

Tragically, that time proved shorter than anyone could have imagined.

On April 30, 2023, Jackson Yelle was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The 21-year-old North Eastham resident was a junior at Elon University and was on a weekend trip with his club baseball team.

News of Jackson’s death sent shockwaves throughout the Cape Cod and Elon communities, and in the months that followed Yelle spent his days walking around in a fog trying to make sense of it all. But amid his grief an idea came to him, one that would grant him some closure while providing an opportunity to do some good in his son’s memory.

Yelle would finish what he and Jackson started.

North Eastham's Scott Yelle presents the Pittsburgh Pirates with a $1,000 donation in support of the MLB Nike RBI Program. Yelle is making similar donations at each stop along his ballpark tour honoring his late son Jackson. (Photo by Harrison Barden)

A whirlwind tour

At the time of Jackson’s death he and his father had made it to 12 of the 30 MLB ballparks, so Yelle began making plans to visit the remaining 18 they hadn’t gotten to. He and his wife had also recently established the Jackson Yelle Family Foundation, so ideally they would find a charitable organization in each city they could support in Jackson’s honor.

“I started putting it out to my folks who I know in the baseball world, said, hey, I’ve got this idea,” Yelle said.

One of the people he connected with was Trey Wingo, the longtime ESPN reporter who suggested he look into MLB’s Nike RBI Program, which aims to provide baseball opportunities to kids in inner city communities. Yelle did some research and was convinced after watching a testimonial by Hunter Greene, the Cincinnati Reds pitcher who originally came up through his local RBI Program.

“He talked about how the RBI Program helped him with his baseball skills but also helped him as a person with his confidence and public speaking and grades and being a great teammate and how to deal with adversity, all things that were core values of Jackson,” Yelle said. “After watching that video I knew it was the right organization to try and partner up with.”

Once the season began Yelle hit the road, and over the past three weeks he’s already checked eight new ballparks off the list. He saw the Philadelphia Phillies host the Chicago White Sox at Citizens Bank Park on Friday night, and in the coming months he plans to visit four more west coast parks in mid-May before rounding out the last six parks in the midwest over the first week of June.

The journey will conclude on June 9, when he visits Comerica Park in Detroit to see the Tigers host the Brewers.

Last night, Scott Yelle visited @tropicanafield , MLB ballpark #15 on his journey to all 30 – something he and his son, Jackson, started together before Jackson tragically passed away in an accident last year. He is making donations to @MLBRBI programs, including PAL of St. Pete. pic.twitter.com/KJasguGhpC — Rays Community (@RaysCommunity) April 3, 2024

Along the way Yelle will donate $1,000 to each team’s local RBI Program, and if he’s able to raise enough money he hopes to eventually make similar donations to the clubs he and Jackson had visited together as well. Yelle said so far he’s gotten a positive reception in each city he’s visited and that the whole experience has been uplifting for him and the family.

That being said, he acknowledged that there have still been plenty of difficult moments.

“It’s bittersweet,” Yelle said. “I remember waiting for my trolley ride when I was in Dallas going to the Rangers game on the 31st … There was a dad and his son in the 10-year-old range, and I got weepy, it definitely brought back moments and I wish I could finish this with him.

“But it’s also baseball, I don’t know if healing is the right word, but there is definitely a lot of energy that comes from being in a ballpark,” he added.

A coach’s dream

Yelle took Jackson to his first baseball game in 2007, when he was 5 years old. At the time the family was living in San Francisco, so Yelle waited until the Red Sox were in town before taking his son to the Oakland Coliseum to see them play the Athletics.

Even growing up in the Bay Area, Jackson was always a diehard Red Sox fan.

Over the years the family bounced around, spending nine years in Connecticut before settling on Cape Cod full time in 2016. Their love of baseball was a constant throughout, and whether it was taking Jackson along on a business trip or planning vacations around the MLB schedule, the shared ballpark journey helped form the bedrock of their father-son bond.

“In those early years it was a little bit easier to go see ballgames because he didn’t have all his activities going on,” Yelle said. “Sometime around 2010 we started to make a conscious effort to try to get to all 30 at some point.”

Once in North Eastham, Jackson began carving out his own reputation on the diamond. He played varsity baseball at Nauset Regional High School along with the Cape Cod Baseball Club’s Cape Riptide Travel Team, and following his graduation in 2020 he enrolled at Elon to study business analytics. Naturally, he also joined the university’s club baseball team.

By all accounts Jackson was well regarded everywhere he went. Following his death tributes came pouring in, with those who knew him describing him as a positive, happy-go-lucky kid who always put his friends first. Steve Almonte, who coached Jackson with the Cape Cod Baseball Club, described him in an interview with the Cape Cod Times as a supremely gifted athlete, top-notch performer and a fun-loving kid.

“Jackson was humble, strong and confident,” Almonte said. “He was the type of player that every coach dreams of having.”

North Eastham's Scott Yelle poses with the Elon University club baseball team, with whom his son Jackson played prior to his death in a hit-and-run accident last spring.

After the accident Jackson’s club teammates at Elon raised $40,000 on his behalf, which became the seed money that allowed the Yelle family to start his foundation. In addition to the $18,000 being donated to the MLB Nike RBI Programs as part of the ballpark tour, the family also helped purchase a new batting cage for the Nauset High baseball program and plans to support the Elon club baseball and softball teams as well.

The family will also award a scholarship to students from Nauset and Elon, and ultimately they hope to invest in programs that can help promising young people reach their full potential and make a difference in the world.

“We believe the world continues to need young men and women to be our future leaders and make future positive impacts like we think Jackson would have,” Yelle said. “We’re just trying to find ways to be able to give back to communities to put great people into the world.”

Plainfield's Jacob Irons named Honorable Mention All-American collegiate sportscaster

cape cod travel baseball

Jacob Irons had returned home from South Bend, Indiana, in late May and was playing Scrabble with his grandmother when his phone started to blow up. He kept peeking at the phone, knowing he wasn’t supposed to look at it during the game.

“My family gets suspicious that I might look up words,” Irons said. “My grandmother wanted to know what was going on. I said I didn’t know. She said you better take a look.”

College broadcasters that he knew from around the country were sending him congratulatory texts. Irons had just been named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA).

“I had applied months before and I wasn’t even thinking about it or following it,” Irons said. “My grandmother was like, ‘Oh my goodness, that is so good.’”

Since 2009, the STAA All-America program has recognized the nation’s most outstanding collegiate radio and TV sports broadcasters with first team, second team, third team and honorable mention All-America honors . The Jim Nantz Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate broadcaster. This year’s winner was USC’s Carlo Jimenez.

Irons, who just finished his sophomore year at Notre Dame , was one of 16 college broadcasters selected as honorable mention recipients.

“I was extremely happy about that because sometimes you listen to yourself and you’re like, ‘Damn, I don’t know if I'm getting good at this,’” Irons said.

Realizing a dream on Cape Cod

Irons’ broadcasting journey has taken him to Cape Cod. It’s where a whole bunch of All-Americans spend their summer, chasing their dreams every year among the sandy beaches, windswept dunes, shingled cottages, and landscaped baseball diamonds.

Irons is an intern for the Cape Cod Baseball League ’s (CCBL) Hyannis Harbor Hawks . He is part of the Harbor Hawks nightly broadcast crew that includes collegians Mickey Doolittle (Missouri), Mychal Kersting (Maryland), and Brea Lassek (Northwestern).

“It has been an awesome experience,” Irons said. “I’m very fortunate for everyone within the Hyannis organization to afford me this opportunity to broadcast games and get to work on Cape Cod.”

There are 10 teams in the Cape Cod Baseball League and much like the players, who are some of the top Major League Baseball prospects in the country, each team's broadcasters are also aspiring professionals.

“This is the best of the best, both on the field and off the field,” Irons said. “The interns you get to work with are arguably going to be the biggest and brightest minds in the media.”

Growing up in Plainfield, Irons had always dreamed of broadcasting games on Cape Cod. He was well aware of the town’s connection to the Cape. It’s where Plainfield High teacher and Panthers longtime baseball coach John Schiffner became the CCBL’s winningest coach after a Hall of Fame career with the Chatham Anglers. It’s where Irons’ cousin, Travis Beausoleil, the former Mitchell College head coach who is the new athletic director at UConn-Avery Point, was a batting coach on Schiffner’s staff.

Seven years ago while vacationing with his family to see Beausoleil, Irons found himself in the press box at Harwich’s Whitehouse Field sitting between Mariners announcers Jake Eisenberg, now the radio voice of the Kansas City Royals, and Evan Stockton, a broadcaster for the Syracuse Mets (AAA). Someone gave Irons a headset. He was 13 years old.

When the Harbor Hawks visited Harwich earlier this season, it became a surreal moment for Irons.

“I’ve finally been able to achieve a dream,” Irons said. “Cape Cod has always been the goal.”

Game day preparation

Irons lives in South Dennis, about a 20-minute ride to Hyannis’ McKeon Park. His day is consumed with gathering relevant information for that night’s game, whether he is the color analyst or play-by-play commentator. He checks the daily box scores, learns about the comings and goings from around the league, especially after last week’s MLB Draft, and gets warning from the Harbor Hawks front office on what players might be activated.

Irons gets to the field four hours before game time to interview players and talk to the production crew about what kind of graphics they could use during that night’s broadcast.

“During home games there are a lot of moving elements working with the production team,” Irons said. “It’s pretty chaotic.”

Irons is loving every minute of it.

“The people behind the scenes are what makes this so special,” Irons said. “It really is a great group of individuals that they have assembled here. We’re working for the viewer to put out the best product we can every night. It’s a great organization to be a part of.”

The right fit in South Bend

Irons began pursuing his broadcasting dreams at Plainfield High School. He was the public address announcer at home basketball games. He covered the school’s games through his popular Panther Podcast on Instagram Live. He was the voice of Moosup American Legion baseball for four years. During the summers, he interned at radio station WINY (1350 AM). Last summer, Irons enjoyed an internship with the New England Collegiate Baseball League’s Mystic Schooners.

The “Voice of Plainfield Sports” had interest in a number of colleges during his senior year. Some of the schools (Syracuse, Fordham, etc.) were among the top broadcast journalism schools in the country. Irons chose Notre Dame University.

“I like to say it’s the best decision I’ve made in awhile,” Irons said. “It was everything I was looking for in a school and I didn’t even know I was looking for it. I have to give props to my principal, Christopher Bitgood, and my parents, who really pushed me along to go look at Notre Dame and see that it was a really good fit for me.”

Irons is a film, TV and theater major, while minoring in sports media and culture. During his freshman year, Irons traveled from South Bend to Syracuse to do football play-by-play for the school’s radio station. He is a director’s spotter for NBC during the Fighting Irish’s home football games.

As a sophomore, Irons became the lead voice on the digital side for Notre Dame’s women’s volleyball and softball teams. He works behind the scenes at the ACC softball tournament for the ACC Network. He also did play-by-play on the digital side for the men’s basketball game against Lipscomb.

“They put a lot of faith in me to do some big games and that makes it all the more special,” Irons said. “They trust me and give me a lot of opportunities to learn and grow, which makes it really valuable, especially early on as a college guy.”

More: Plainfield will be first CT school to offer AI course. Here's what they're going to learn.

Playoff push

Irons will return to Notre Dame after the final out of the Harbor Hawks season. He is hoping, however, to broadcast more big games this summer as Hyannis makes a push for a Cape Cod Baseball League playoff berth.

Irons is also looking forward to a visit later this summer from his parents, Lisa and Mark, and his sister Hannah, Plainfield’s all-state shortstop . The word "all-American" might even appear in the family's competitive Scrabble game.

“It was nice to know that someone else thinks you’re halfway decent,” Irons said. “It’s nice to get a little recognition from the work you put in.”

Fast start, with good defense, leads St. John Paul II baseball to win over Monomoy

cape cod travel baseball

HARWICH — It's not about how you start, but how you finish.

Well, that’s not always the case.

Sometimes it's about how you start and how you finish.

The St. John Paul II baseball team defeated Monomoy 7-2 at Whitehouse Field on Thursday.

The Lions had a hot start and never looked back.

"It’s a lot harder to play from behind, and being able to get those good leads is important in our success,” JPII head coach Mike Young said.

That has been the Sharks' kryptonite on the flip side.

“The games that we’ve lost have been due to having been bad first innings,” Monomoy head coach Steve Porter said. “I think if we can nip that in the bud, we can stop that snowball from getting worse and we’ll be OK moving forward.”

The Lions wasted no time as they took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They gave up one run in the bottom of the first, but made up for that with two more runs in the top of the second inning.

They held the Sharks scoreless in the bottom of the second inning, and just like that, the Lions had a 6-1 lead after two innings.

The Lions starting pitcher senior Hunter Alten was a reason for that lead as he gave up one run (unearned) for that early lead.

“As a pitcher, run support is huge because it gives you confidence on the bump,” Alten said. “We’re able to feel secure, but also keep our foot on the gas, keep going and put more (runs) up.”

Alten pitched five innings, scattered five hits, gave up one earned run, one walk, and struck out five.

The Lions had a 6-2 lead after five innings, but needed somebody to close the deal.

Insert Colin Buckley.

The junior pitcher came in to relieve Alten for the last two innings.

Buckley sealed the door shut as he threw a hitless two innings, gave up no runs, and struck out two.

“I know that I can trust the guys behind me and I don’t have to do it all by myself,” Buckley said. “Baseball is a team game.”

Lions Big Win

This win means more for the Lions than other games.

The Lions beat the Sharks on their home field for the first time in three years.

“Being able to come here and win a game against a tough League opponent, it builds confidence and security as we go through the rest of the season, that we can beat all these teams we face,” Alten said. “Our talent is good, our effort is good, everything is good.”

The Lions are now 2-2 on the season, with both losses being by one run to Barnstable and Fairhaven.

Buckley said the win does a lot for the team’s confidence.

“It simplifies things. I think all our guys know now all it takes to win is simple at-bats, and putting the guy behind you in a better position,” Buckley said.

Young said resilience, toughness and understanding that failure is a part of the game is what will make the Lions successful the rest of the season.

“It's just about going out on gameday and executing,” Young said. “Just being the better team on that given day and making sure we bring it in practice to be able to put ourselves in the best position.”

Sharks Still Swimming

The Sharks have dropped their last two games after a 3-1 start to the season.

Porter said that they have faced some tougher competition over the last few games. He said despite the slide, he likes the team’s camaraderie because they have each other’s backs.

He said the early start games (10 a.m. and 11 a.m.) have been tough for them, but he is not worried.

“It's going to take a lot of mental toughness,” Porter said. “The big thing for us is making sure we bring the energy and bring the focus from the first pitch. They’ve been through the ups and downs. They know how to battle back from this.”

Cape Cod's mystery. Cold War drone unearthed on a beach

A t the beginning of April, workers cleaning the beach on the Cape Cod peninsula in Massachusetts stumbled upon a mysterious object resembling the fuselage of a small airplane. It was later revealed that this object was a secret device from the American army, dating back to the Cold War era.

This discovery at Cape Cod's beach isn't the first of its kind, but the nature of this particular find is unparalleled.

A Drone from 70 Years Ago

Further investigation revealed that the workers had found the remains of an aircraft from 70 years ago! Cape Cod National Seashore's Facebook post said this was an RCAT or Remote Control Aerial Target.

As Fox News pointed out, what might seem like a primitive drone program to us today was the height of modern technology at the time and was classified as "top secret."

These drones were launched from a runway that no longer exists, nestled in the woods of Wellfleet. Equipped with their engines and fuel tanks, they were catapult-launched and remotely controlled from a cliff.
