Medical Tourism Patient Survey

The Medical Tourism Association, in collaboration with the International Healthcare Research Center, has gathered critical insights into why patients are increasingly choosing to travel for medical care. This comprehensive 31-page report sheds light on the decision-making process, motivations, and concerns of medical tourists, focusing on aspects like the search for superior medical expertise, trust in healthcare providers, cost-effectiveness, and the appeal of innovative treatments. These findings are crucial for healthcare providers looking to tailor their services to meet the evolving needs and expectations of patients globally, ensuring not only the highest standards of care but also building the essential trust and confidence that underpins the decision to seek medical treatment abroad.

UNWTO Awards

The UNWTO Awards are the flagship awards for the global tourism sector.

What are the UNWTO Awards?

Since 2003, the Awards recognize the work of organizations and individuals around the world that positively impact and inspire the tourism sector through innovation and knowledge.

To date, UNWTO has acknowledged the contribution of distinguished scholars, inspiring leaders, as well as more than 80 initiatives from the public and private sector as well as NGOs. Their achievements serve as an inspiration for competitive and sustainable tourism development at a local, national, regional and international level. The contributions of the awardees are in line with the  Global Code of Ethics for Tourism  and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals .

Recognition is given in the following categories:

The  UNWTO Ulysses Prize  is given to a distinguished scholar, whether in academia, government or private industry, for outstanding contributions to innovation and knowledge in tourism.

The  UNWTO  Awards merit distinction in four categories for the significant contribution of innovative tourism initiatives which are both competitive and sustainable in their character.

  • UNWTO Award in Public Policy and Governance:  An initiative is highly innovative and managed by a public or public-private institution that reflects tangible and sustainable improvements in policy, processes, and governance. It works towards an inclusive model of tourism governance which involves diverse tourism stakeholders.

From Idea to Impact: Meet the Recipients of the Inaugural Chancellor’s Innovation Awards

Published Date

They’re saving lives—and saving the planet. The forward-thinking innovators behind Vektor Medical , an AI-based cardiac localization and analysis technology, and FjordPhyto , a unique participatory science platform that intertwines climate science and tourism, took home the top prizes during the University of California San Diego’s inaugural Chancellor’s Innovation Awards celebration.

Held Feb. 29 at UC San Diego’s Design and Innovation Building —a campus hub for interdisciplinary innovation and growth—the event served to highlight the diverse spectrum of innovation that thrives at the university and recognize individuals who are driving positive societal change through groundbreaking discovery.

The Chancellor’s Innovation Awards, which opened for nominations last September, were created to recognize standouts in two distinguished categories, each with a cash prize: Faculty Startup of the Year and Student/Alumni Innovator of the Year.

This year’s winners represent just two of the more than 1,000 startups that have launched out of UC San Diego since the university’s founding in 1960. In the last three fiscal years alone, 49 startups have been licensed from university technologies, and more than $51 million in funding has been acquired by UC San Diego startups through venture capital investment, private equity, mergers and acquisitions over the last three calendar years.

“Innovation is not just something we do here at UC San Diego—it is who we are,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla to event attendees. “Innovation is our state of being and our ethos. Innovation is central to our mission to transform California into a diverse global society by educating, generating and disseminating knowledge and creative works, providing high-quality health care and engaging in public service."

Before announcing this year’s winners, who were chosen from among three finalists in each category by a panel of award reviewers, Khosla thanked the generous donors and supporters who made the Innovation Awards a reality. He then introduced founding donor Drew Senyei, MD, trustee of the UC San Diego Foundation, who conceived the idea of the awards. With the help of fellow members of UC San Diego’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council , Senyei worked tirelessly to bring the idea to life.

“ This program was established to recognize and celebrate the uniquely Triton culture of innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit that have become defining hallmarks of UC San Diego,” said Senyei. “We recognize the entrepreneurial successes of UC San Diego's faculty as well as the potential inspired by the next generation of innovators in our community: the students and alumni.”

Revolutionizing cardiac arrhythmia care

UC San Diego’s first-ever Faculty Startup of the Year award was presented to Vektor Medical founders Andrew McCulloch, a distinguished professor of bioengineering and Shu Chien Chancellor’s Endowed Chair in Engineering and Medicine, and David Krummen, a professor of medicine at UC San Diego and cardiac electrophysiologist at UC San Diego Health and VA San Diego Healthcare System.

With the potential to revolutionize outcomes for patients with cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, and streamline ablation procedures, Vektor Medical’s innovative AI-based localization and analysis technology, vMap, uses computational modeling and proprietary  algorithms to identify arrhythmia source locations non-invasively.

The FDA-cleared solution, which currently is in use at 10 hospitals across the U.S., relies solely on 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) data to determine each individual patient’s arrhythmia source location and help inform targeted therapy for that patient.

Its ongoing commercial rollout signifies vMap’s potential to elevate the standard of care for millions of cardiac arrhythmia patients, making a substantial impact in the field. Krummen and McCulloch hope that their work will allow more patients to get early, effective treatment and will make lifesaving ablation procedures safer and more successful. This recognition from UC San Diego, they believe, may help accelerate and enhance their ability to continue to bring this technology to the market.

“This award is incredibly meaningful for us,” said Krummen. “The culture of innovation and collaboration at UC San Diego—which brought together engineers and clinicians in a cutting-edge environment—is what allowed the idea behind Vektor Medical to become successful. I hope that our story can inspire other innovations at UC San Diego that address other important problems."

Transforming tourism into an engine of scientific discovery

Allison Cusick, a Ph.D. candidate at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, received the Student/Alumni Innovator of the Year award for her work to evolve the idea of citizen science through her startup FjordPhyto, which launched in 2016 on tourism expedition vessels in Antarctica . The southernmost continent, which is undergoing rapid climate change, also grapples with a significant tourist-scientist imbalance.

To help rectify this imbalance, the NASA-funded project actively involves tourists in collecting measurements and physical samples during the Antarctic tourism season. This not only provides an engaging learning platform for the tourists, but also contributes to key advancements that enhance the scientific community’s understanding of the impact of melting glaciers on phytoplankton communities.

Through FjordPhyto, Cusick and other Scripps scientists, in collaboration with scientists from Argentina’s Universidad Nacional de La Plata, rely on close relationships with Antarctic tour  operators and polar expedition guides to facilitate tourist involvement. Receiving this award, said Cusick, will further FjordPhyto’s ability to collect vital data from an often-inhospitable environment.

“I am deeply grateful and proud to receive the Chancellor's Student Innovator of the Year award,” said Cusick. “It's a testament to the work that comes from collaborative efforts and dedication of our team, pioneering new ways to work in challenging, data-limited environments. UC San Diego and Scripps Institution of Oceanography are globally recognized for high-quality research. The vibrant interdisciplinary atmosphere on campus empowers us to push boundaries  and innovate. This award and recognition will allow us to grow sustainably, continuing to lead in impactful scientific discoveries while fostering social engagement and ocean literacy.”

Fostering a culture of innovation

UC San Diego’s diverse entrepreneurial campus culture was on full display during the inaugural Chancellor’s Innovation Awards event, highlighting the boundless curiosity and transformative influence for which the university is known worldwide. This year’s six remarkable finalists all are translating groundbreaking ideas into impact, working to improve lives and addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our planet.

The event motivated and encouraged attendees, many of whom are involved in the university’s innovation ecosystem, and served as a reminder of the valuable contributions that UC San Diego brings to the local region and beyond.

“Since its founding, UC San Diego has recruited preeminent faculty who lead the way in forging fundamental advances across science and engineering,” said SK Sharma, Chief AI Officer at Universal Music Group and Entrepreneur-in-Residence with UC San Diego’s Office of Innovation and Commercialization. “This culture of pioneering innovation remains stronger than ever and was well represented at this year’s Chancellor’s Innovation Awards Ceremony. After hearing from our finalists, I couldn’t be more confident about the outlook for San Diego’s innovation-based economy, and the critical role that UC San Diego’s exceptional faculty continue to play in building that ecosystem.”

A leader among top universities in startup creation, UC San Diego embraces an inclusive culture of exploration and experimentation through a substantial number of programs, resources and campus spaces that encourage risk-taking and interdisciplinary collaboration. These efforts include entities like the Office of Innovation and Commercialization , which aligns resources available to innovators through the university, and the state-of-the-art Design and Innovation  Building—home of spaces such as The Basement , a student-focused incubator and The Design Lab , aimed at addressing complex problems facing society.

"After hearing from our finalists, I couldn’t be more confident about the outlook for San Diego’s innovation-based economy, and the critical role that UC San Diego’s exceptional faculty continue to play in building that ecosystem."

The allure of american healthcare: an overview of inbound medical tourism to the united states.

medical tourism awards

Inbound medical tourism to the United States has been growing rapidly in recent years, as more and more foreign patients seek high-quality medical care in the world's leading economy. According to a report by Patients Beyond Borders, the US is the top destination for inbound medical tourism, attracting more than 1.4 million patients annually and generating over $14 billion in revenue. In this article, we'll explore the benefits and challenges of inbound medical tourism to the US, the most popular procedures and destinations, and the impact of COVID-19 on the industry.

Benefits of Inbound Medical Tourism to the United States

Inbound medical tourism to the US has several benefits for both healthcare providers and foreign patients. For healthcare providers, it can generate significant revenue and boost their reputation in the global medical community. For foreign patients, it provides access to high-quality medical care that may not be available or affordable in their home countries.

One of the biggest advantages of inbound medical tourism to the US is the high level of quality and safety in American healthcare. The US is home to some of the most prestigious hospitals, medical centers, and healthcare professionals in the world, with cutting-edge technology and a focus on patient-centered care. Foreign patients are attracted to the US for medical treatment because of the reputation of American healthcare, and many choose to return for follow-up care or other medical procedures.

Challenges of Inbound Medical Tourism to the United States

While inbound medical tourism to the US has many benefits, it also presents several challenges. Healthcare providers and destinations need to be aware of these challenges in order to attract and accommodate foreign patients successfully.

One of the biggest challenges is the cost of medical care in the US, which can be significantly higher than in other countries. Foreign patients may be willing to pay more for high-quality medical care, but they still need to be able to afford the procedures they require. Healthcare providers need to be able to offer competitive pricing while still maintaining their quality standards.

Another challenge is the complexity of the US healthcare system, which can be difficult for foreign patients to navigate. Healthcare providers and destinations need to be able to provide clear and concise information about their services, pricing, and procedures to foreign patients in their native languages. They also need to be able to offer support and assistance throughout the entire process, from booking appointments to follow-up care.

Popular Procedures and Destinations for Inbound Medical Tourism to the United States

Inbound medical tourism to the US covers a wide range of medical procedures and destinations. According to Patients Beyond Borders, the most popular procedures for foreign patients in the US are:

  • Cancer treatment
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Orthopedics

The most popular destinations for inbound medical tourism to the US include:

The Impact of COVID-19 on Inbound Medical Tourism to the United States

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on inbound medical tourism to the US, with many foreign patients unable or unwilling to travel due to travel restrictions and health concerns. According to a report by Global Healthcare Resources, inbound medical tourism to the US dropped by more than 60% in 2020 due to the pandemic.

However, as vaccination rates increase and travel restrictions are lifted, there is hope that inbound medical tourism to the US will rebound in the coming months and years. Healthcare providers and destinations need to be prepared to adapt to the new normal of the post-COVID world, with enhanced safety protocols, telemedicine services, and other measures in place to ensure the safety and well-being of both foreign patients and healthcare professionals.

Alliance Hospital CMD Recognised For Reversing Medical Tourism

medical tourism awards

Chief medical director of Alliance Hospital, Dr Christopher Otabor has received an award from Northern youths, under the aegis of Northern Youths Association of Nigeria, for reversing medical tourism in the country.

The group explained that having followed the activities of the medical practitioner for long,it found Dr. Otabor worthy to be one of the recipients of its highly prestigious awards.

Describing the CMD as an “Icon of Nation Building, the group explained further that the award was in recognition of his immense  contributions and philanthropy, human transformation and educational transformation for the benefit of humanity and the country at large.

Speaking through its president, Comrade Adams Bogoro, the Northern Youth Association of Nigeria insisted that they found it compelling to identify with Dr Otabor for positive contributions to only humanity but also the Nigerian society, to spur him to do more.

Presenting the  “Sir Ahmadu Bello Platinum Leadership and Northern Heroes Award to the renowned medical practitioner in Abuja, Comrade Bogoro insisted that the hospital had done very well to change the narrative in medical tourism.

He said::”We’ are here to identify with you on what you have been doing. You have contributed positively to the Nigerian society,so we are here to encourage you to do more. We have been following your antecedents for quite some time, this hospital has really done very well, especially in the area of health. It’s based on this that this group deemed it feet to consider you as one of the recipients of our awards. Basically, the award is to spur you,the award is to encourage you,the award is to motivate you to do more. The award is also to serve as a catalyst for you to continue to give your best to the service of the nation as you have always been doing.”

Responding after being presented with the reverted award, Dr Otabor, who thanked the group, said he was overwhelmed considering that the award came at a time many youths were roaming the streets without direction and instead engaging in terrorism, banditry, armed robbery and other social vices.

He said, “I warmly welcome you to Alliance Hospital, Abuja. A one-stop shop for multi-specialty care.  Alliance Hospital was established in 2011, with a clear mandate of stopping medical tourism, because medical tourism has been a big shame to this country.

“ With a population of over 200 million people, our nationals are going out of the country for medical care- to India,to Egypt,to the USA and other countries. A lot of people talk about the problem and not many people talk about the solution,so I decided that we would be part of the solution rather than just talking about the problem. So we invested heavily in equipment and also got the best hands in the country. And I can assure you that we are achieving the purpose for which Alliance Hospital was set up.

“Alliance Hospital is a leading centre for joint replacement surgery in this country -both hip and knee replacements. And thses are surgeries that were being done abroad but we do it now. We are also very strong in brain and spine surgery. We have done many in this regard. Last year alone,we did over 40 surgeries. The same figure for brain surgery.

“Now,we have acquired the competences for kidney transplant . People go to spend over a hundred million naira to do kidney transplant in countries like the US and the United Kingdom but with only 20 percent of that amount or less,we are safely doing kidney transplant in this centre with a very high success rate. This is besides so many other things that we do as a hospital. I am proud of our results.

“When you have success, people will also want to come and dent your image. We have had crisis in recent times but I want to assure you as youths  that we have integrity as a hospital.i want to assure you that we are law abiding as a hospital,I want to assure you that we have compassion for Nigerians. And we will do anything to help as many Nigerians as possible. That is exactly what we are doing. I want to believe that you might have seen some of the things that we have done and what we stand for. That is why you consider me fit for this award and I’m very grateful for it and I thank you immensely.

“I see that there is a huge number of youths in this country, many of them are misguided, because they did not come under umbrella like yours and we cannot succeed as youths,as young people except we organise ourselves into groups where we discuss our problems and also proffer solutions.

That is why I commend the association for first of all, organising and also identifying role models that you can build your lives after and also respond to the needs of the society.”
