One of the world's best
For the first time since 2020, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) brings its rigor, artistry, and stunning stagecraft back to City Center with a season of unforgettable works. Legendary choreographer William Forsythe brings his quartet N.N.N.N., a piece for four dancers that explores the linkages and breaking points of bodies in motion. Former NDT dancers Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal , in collaboration with the design company DRIFT , set the company’s uniquely exacting technique against thrillingly theatrical scenic design in The Point Being, a US premiere work. And renowned choreographic duo Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar introduce Jakie, a 35-minute opus making its US debut after a world premiere in May 2023.

Pinocchio Effect
Scapino ballet rotterdam.
Scapino lives dance, breathes dance, is dance. But when the company began, it didn’t set out with the aim of creating and performing dance.
Scapino was founded in 1945 by Hans Snoek. She (yes, Hans was a woman) dreamt of ‘bringing colour back to the cheeks of children after the war.’ And it’s because of her belief in the power of dance to make that happen, that Scapino came to be. The drive to bring change through dance – to bring joy, life, colour – still moves us today.

Nederlands Dans Theater – NDT 1 Gabriela Carrizo / Jiří Kylián / Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney
The ever-original Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) present a trio of works spanning generations, continents and contemporary issues.
This is a rare opportunity to join Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 1 ) in a UK premiere of their latest mind-bending works.
Figures in Extinction [1.0]
We are living in an age of extinction: of animals, of language, of our connection with nature and of age-old ways of knowing. Can we ever hope to give a name to what we are losing? What does it mean to bear witness to a violence in which we are both perpetrators and victims?
Across continents, choreographer Crystal Pite and director Simon McBurney reflect on their fears and cautious hopes for the age we are living in. In a major new collaboration from NDT and Complicité these world-renowned artists work together, drawing on a rich array of materials such as the sound of icecaps melting, tree roots growing, and the protests of climate change deniers.
Gods and Dogs
Gods and Dogs is the 100th choreography Jiří Kylián created for NDT. This mysterious ballet by the master choreographer visualizes the fine line between normality and abnormality. Or as he puts it: “Surely no positive developments can ever be accomplished without the help of a healthy portion of madness.” Gods and Dogs is called ‘an unfinished work’, referring to Kylián’s fascination for the beauty of what is left incomplete in life.
On a dark, fog-shrouded stage, a street is at once a motorway, a lonely village lane and a forest path. Space and time are suspended and it is up to you to create your own connections. Argentinian choreographer Gabriela Carrizo combines modern dance with acrobatics and slapstick in La Ruta .
With her unusual, experimental style, Carrizo takes us into a parallel dream world that you can interpret into your own never-ending story. Be warned; she doesn’t let you go so easily.
[Image description] A group of eight dancers are stood in a line, reaching in to grasp the central figure. There is dramatic downward lighting illuminating their faces but leaving their bodies in darkness. The central figure – crouched slightly lower than the rest – has their head thrown back, looking upwards, and his arms reaching out to either side. The hands of the other dancers a spread across his arms, chest and head. All the figures wear simple, beige sleeveless tops and dark trousers.

UK & IRELAND TOUR 2022
NDT 2 ’s “young, sexy, superlative” (The Times) dancers are back to impress!
One of the world’s leading dance companies and huge favourites with UK audiences, Nederlands Dans Theater possess a winning combination of balletic grace and virtuosic skill with fearless athleticism, passion and personality.
For their highly anticipated return to the UK, NDT 2 will perform works by celebrated international choreographers: Marco Goecke, Hans van Manen and Johan Inger, featuring two UK premieres.
In his very personal and moving piece about the fragility of life and love, Goecke’s The Big Crying , with songs by Tori Amos, energises the fiery power of 18 outstanding dancers to embrace a celebration of life.
Van Manen’s exquisite quartet, Simple Things, featuring Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 28 in E-major, is described as ‘pure dance art’, presenting a master class in simplicity.
For the finale, Johan Inger’s vibrant IMPASSE bursts onto the stage with the joyful music of French-Lebanese jazz trumpeter and composer Ibrahim Maalouf, as he explores the strength of togetherness over isolation in our world today.
This is dance at its most sublime level. NDT 2 are not to be missed!

Three choreographies
Teatre Grec 29/06 - 30/06
- "> Programme
Creating, but also promoting research and innovation, and detecting and helping new dance talent to develop, are the goals of one of Europe’s leading dance companies, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) directed by Canada’s Emily Molnar and offering choreographies created and performed by some of the most outstanding figures on the global dance scene. Entitled The Poetic Body , the 2021-2022 season includes half a dozen programmes featuring the three choreographies for this occasion: the recent premiere of How to cope with a sunset when the horizon has been dismantled , by the Dutch-Valencian dancer and choreographer Marina Mascarell; the choreography Bedroom Folk , by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, and William Forsythe’s creation One Flat Thing, reproduced. These productions will enable us to see the work of three generations of creators, all in the same programme.
The piece by Marina Mascarell, a former member of NDT, is the Valencian artist's first creation with NDT 1, the first of two companies that make up Nederlands Dans Theater. How to cope with a sunset when the horizon has been dismantled is a piece which questions social topics and seeks alternatives to pre-determined patterns of movement, two common elements in Mascarell’s work. The choreography is based on four pieces of music created between the mid-19th century and the end of the 20th century, bringing sounds and bodies into collision as a way of subverting our relationship with truths from the past.
Mascarell’s choreography is accompanied by a piece from Israeli creator Sharon Eyal, seen at the Grec 2019 with the Ballet BC Vancouver. Eyal created the piece for NDT with her creative partner, Gai Behar. Bedroom folk features electronic music by Ori Lichtik and on this occasion involves eighteen artists in a particularly energetic creation which includes solos and group moments. Finally, the programme features William Forsythe’s One flat thing, reproduced , regarded as an iconic choreography by a creator who has strongly influenced dance in recent decades, with a complexity of movement that truly puts the performers’ skills to the test.
A production by Nederlands Dans Theater.

The Point Being
Prestigious
The 28 dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) once again display their impressive skills in a stunning triptych: Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, alongside William Forsythe, and Imre and Marne van Opstal!
The NDT, which will celebrate its 65 th anniversary in 2024, is constantly moving forward with ambitious works by the biggest names on the international scene. Europe’s most elegant and accomplished dance company, directed since 2020 by Canadian Emily Molnar, will dazzle us with this memorable program. One Flat Thing, reproduced is pure Forsythe at his best, a masterful demonstration of perfectly orchestrated chaos, where the virtuosity of the performers rivals the ingenious complexity of the choreography. Astonishing. The duo Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, NDT associate artists whose infectiously energetic works never fail to captivate audiences, have a new creation in store for us. Finally, The Point Being by a talented tandem of former NDT performers, the siblings Imre and Marne van Opstal, will complete this triptych. A must-see.
Born in 1949, William Forsythe has been active in the field of choreography for over 50 years and is recognized as one of the world’s foremost choreographers. His three decades of work with his ensembles in Frankfurt is celebrated for reorienting the practice of ballet from its identification to classical repertoires into a dynamic 21st century art form.
Sharon Eyal was a performer, associate director and resident choreographer with the Batsheva Dance Company before becoming an independent choreographer in 2009.
Gai Behar is considered an influential figure in the world of live music and art and the nightlife scene in Tel-Aviv. As an event organizer for numerous nightclubs and curator of multidisciplinary art events, he specializes in experimental combinations of performance art, installation, and video with dance.
Imre & Marne van Opstal are choreographers, movement directors, and performing artists. As siblings, they form a creative duo whose work has been presented internationally. After having enjoyed successful and prominent careers at Nederlands Dans Theater and the Batsheva Dance Company, Imre and Marne went on to pursue their own creative ventures.

Nederlands Dans Theater 2 on Tour – Review
February 18, 2022 by Adrian York Leave a Comment
Last Updated on February 19, 2024
A Triumphant Evening of Contemporary Dance with NDT 2
It’s a busy time for Dance Consortium, a group of 18 large-scale UK and Irish venues that come together to promote dance. With Acosta Danza’s 100% Cuban ( see our review of this fabulous show) now out on tour. Tonight saw the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (NDT 2) return to the UK and Ireland for the first time since 2016. The company’s eighteen young dancers presented a triple bill of works set to music ranging from Tori Amos hits to French-Lebanese jazz trumpet Ibrahim Maalouf and a Haydn piano trio. NDT 2 is now under the directorship of Emily Molnar, formerly artistic director of Ballet British Columbia from 2009 to 2020 and dancer with Frankfurt Ballet under director William Forsythe, and the three choreographers on this bill – Marco Goecke, Hans van Manen and Johan Inger – all have strong links to the company.
It opens with a solo dancer engaging in a cartoon-like series of high-speed sexual couplings encompassing all genders. Goecke has created a highly original language, a sped-up hyper-dance that creates a new framework for the precise physical articulation of ballet and the result is extraordinary. To the sound of Amos’ Death Lullaby: Blood Roses , the tightly synchronised ensemble work their bodies with marionette-style hanging arms, little teapot moves and twitches and jerks. As the soundtrack moves to the percussive beat of a flanged tom-tom beat, there is Michael Jackson style crotch-grabbing, scrabbling across the floor, laughing and screaming. Amos sings “Can’t stop what’s coming” and we understand that our existence is full of finite and futile movement that subsides as Amos covers the R.E.M. song Losing My Religion. It has to be seen!
Dutch maestro Hans van Manen has been involved with NDT since it was founded in 1959, first as a dancer, then choreographer, then artistic director from 1961 until 1970. Simple Things , created for NDT 2 in 2001, celebrates the beauty of conceptual simplicity and a delight in pure dance foregrounding the passion, grace and line of the movement. It features four dancers who appear in different partnerships. Characterful Emmitt Cawley and the extraordinary elongated Auguste Palayer both take balletic solos as the other looks on with the dance responding to the steady pulse and rococo flourishes of a contemporary work for accordion.
Then the two women, Cassandra Martin and Kenedy Kallas enter with moves that are decidedly slinky, mapping out the sensual circularity of tango as the two couples embrace. Haydn’s Piano Trio No 28 in E major acts as an elegant counterweight to the opening with dancers responding in kind and the work draws to its conclusion with a playful reprise of the accordion music. It’s a seductively enjoyable piece of dance that acts as an effective transition to the final piece.
IMPASSE, choreographed by Johan Inger, is the programme’s second UK and Ireland premiere. Inger is a former dancer with the Swedish Royal Ballet and NDT, with his 2020 piece for NDT 2, set to the music of French-Lebanese jazz trumpeter and composer, Ibrahim Maalouf. Inger notes that much of our behaviour is rooted in peer pressure and IMPASSE explores that conception. The curtain lifts revealing a barn door with its frame outlined by a strip of light. A young woman creeps out to be joined by the two other soloists. The dancing is youthful, unfettered, carefree and open allowing them to explore the boundaries of the stage. The three principals are joined by the rest of the company dressed in black as Ibrahim Maalouf’s rumba rhythms crank into gear. The larger group are much more unified in their movement with the trio gradually being sucked into the ensemble and reemerging in black dress.
With the ensemble dominating in a synchronised salsa party the barn frame is gradually replaced by yet smaller iterations, limiting the scope for movement and individual expression; and, in a neat comic touch, there is some actual leg-pulling. The ensemble reemerges dressed in pimped-up party gear creating a fake sense of individuation. At the end, the trio just escapes being shut off by the descending front curtain, but something has been lost. The piece is a powerful critique of mass culture and the peer pressure that arises out of social media use.
This was a triumphant evening of contemporary dance encompassing three distinct dance languages with the company receiving a deserved series of ovations. Catch it while you can! The 28 dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) once again display their impressive skills in a stunning triptych: Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, alongside William Forsythe and a third choreographer to be announced!
Finally, a surprise work by an artist to be announced completes the triptych. A must-see.

Nederlands Dans Theater review – a moving menagerie from a world in crisis
Sadler’s Wells, London Figures in Extinction [1.0], a Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney collaboration, is the climax to a triple bill featuring excellent technique and film noir atmosphere
T he headline piece in this triple bill from Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) is a collaboration between acclaimed Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite and Complicité director Simon McBurney . Figures in Extinction [1.0] is the first in a planned trilogy of works by the pair, asking what art we should be making in the face of environmental crisis.
The answer for this first chapter came from McBurney’s six-year-old daughter, asking of a bird in the garden that flew away: “Has she gone for ever?” More than a million species face extinction , and Pite conjures some of them with a menagerie using the NDT dancers’ malleable bodies.
There are the graceful ripples of a school of smooth handfish and the giant horns of the Pyrenean ibex, worn on a dancer’s arms, that make for beautiful sweeping curves, looking like the outstretched wings of a doomed Icarus. It’s an ultra serious topic, but Pite has fun embodying the animals, whether the quivering feathers of a warbler, or a head-bobbing, pecking Spix’s macaw. It’s sobering that such creatures may come to exist only in these danced charades, and not only animals, but flowers, lakes and glaciers – illustrated by a mass of bodies fracturing into separate pieces.
McBurney gives the piece theatrical clarity – there’s no use in obfuscating when you’ve got a point to make – and Pite brings texture, a little wonder and humour. There is a comedic turn – that’s really anything but – in the shape of a climate change denier (they suggest he’s also facing extinction, but that’s moot) with Pite’s exaggerated physical expulsions accompanying his words given in a voiceover. The piece is thoughtful and moving, and despite the gravity of the theme, not heavy-handed.
Figures in Extinction is the main story here, but it’s only the climax of a triple bill. Before that is 2008’s Gods and Dogs by longtime director Jiří Kylián. It was, incredibly, the 100th piece he created for the company, and it sums up what you’d expect from NDT: technically excellent dancers, with dramatically splayed limbs and subtly virtuosic duets.
More intriguing, and a sign of the influence of Emily Molnar , NDT’s new director since 2020, is a new piece called La Ruta by choreographer Gabriela Carrizo. Carrizo is the co-artistic director of Belgian company Peeping Tom , and you can see the resemblance immediately in its unsettling, surrealist, cinematic style of dance theatre. It doesn’t feel like a dance piece, more a contemporary film noir mixed up with a bad dream.
A desolate urban scene, circa 3am: a bus stop, a junction box, double yellow lines. One scene segues into the next with mounting hallucination – a traffic accident, a heart transplanted from a roadkill deer to a man – while the dancers appear rubberised, catapulting their bodies in dances of highly choreographed confusion. It’s very well made. Although like any dream, there’s not much point or meaning to it all, it’s very successful at creating a world that seems eerily real in the moment: one which, like Pite and McBurney’s Figures in Extinction, can disappear in a blink.

Netherlands Dance Theater
The Netherlands Dance Theatre, completed in 1987, was originally conceived in 1980 as an extension to a circus theatre in Scheveningen, a seaside resort in The Hague. In 1984, the design was adapted for a new site - the Spui Complex - in the centre of The Hague. This new context - an area undergoing substantial change - was dominated by two slabs, the slope of an abandoned project for an innercity motorway, the axis towards the houses of parliament, the site for the future town hall, and a 17th century church - a lonely testimony to the once historical centre.
