GTA 5 Director Mode – Beginner’s Guide to Filmmaking

Image of PCInvasion Staff

This step-by-step approach to capturing and editing clips in GTA 5’s versatile Director Mode won’t turn you into an immediate auteur, but it should get you familiar with the tools available in the game.

Director Mode, and the accompanying editor, are available in both GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online . For the purposes of this guide, I’m using the GTA 5 story mode – but the principles are the same.

Accessing Director Mode

Step one in your exciting new career in film production is to find the Director Mode to begin with. Make sure you’re outside of a mission and don’t have a Wanted level. Then pull up the in-game pause menu (where you can access graphics options, the map, and so on) and scroll once to the left (or all the way right) to make the Editor tab appear.

GTA 5

It’s quite well labelled, really.

Inside here, you can access the GTA 5 Director Mode. Doing so will bring up a casting trailer full of various NPCs and story characters to use in your production. Progressing the single player story unlocks more actors, but even the very start of the game should give you plenty to choose from.

If you go to Settings in this menu, you can also adjust things like time of day and weather. Various cheats can be applied here too, like low gravity or explosive punches.

GTA 5

Most of these are pretty self-explanatory.

Scene Change

Director Mode will load you into Los Santos. If you fancy moving elsewhere on the map, or quickly making changes to the settings, bring up the Interaction menu (M by default.) Here, you can access a quick-travel menu, give your actor a few actions or lines and go back to the casting trailer.

Cable Car Clown

Once you’ve got your desired location and settings, it’s time for filming. Holding down Left Alt (again, by default) brings up the character-switching menu and recording options. You’ve got a couple to choose from here.

You can opt to just start recording (F1) and take it from there, or, you can activate Action Reply (F2) which will buffer stuff in the background until you do something worthy of note and decide to actually save it.

If you’d like your character to do their gesture or dialogue, you can use the default Caps-Lock and Left Ctrl keys respectively.

I’m going to use the first method to make my simple short, Cable Car Clown. In which a surly clown will ride down a cliff on a motorbike.

GTA 5

If only more clowns were as committed to suicide.

If a clip ends with your death, GTA 5 will auto-save it at that point. This can sometimes be a bit abrupt, so switch on Actor Invincibility in the settings (M menu) if you wish to avoid this. You can turn recording off manually with F1. Recording can be entirely cancelled with F3.

The Editing Suite

I’m going to assume you captured a moment of utter genius (or some basic test footage) and are now ready to do some editing. Load back into the Rockstar Editor and select New Project.

It’ll bring up a screen like this. Choose Add Clip, and find your soon-to-be-masterpiece.

GTA 5

I’m pretty sure you can find it.

Everything in the world of Rockstar Editing revolves around markers. You’ll be able to see the beginning and end markers on the clip you’ve loaded in. If you want said clip to begin a little later or end a little sooner, you can drag them to the appropriate points.

Markers allow you to add various effects and select different camera points, angles and transitions. If, for example, you want to apply a filter to the clip, you can do so in a marker menu.

New markers are added to the clip timeline with the M key. Try popping down a marker at a point where you wish a camera angle to change in the clip. Now click on it and play around with the camera options until you find a new one which appeals. You’ll find various fixed presets, and a ‘Free’ camera whose position you can edit. There are also options for smoothing the transitions between (non-fixed) cameras.

It’s just like E.T. only with fewer moons and more clowns.

It’s just like E.T. only with fewer moons and more clowns.

The context hotkeys for moving or zooming cameras will all appear along the bottom of your timeline for ease of reference.

Once you’re happy with your work, save it with F5. Congratulations, you should now have a very straightforward clip with a lone camera cut somewhere around the mid-point. Cable Car Clown has about four, but don’t worry about that.

Sound Check

If you chose to make any of your markers ‘anchors’ (a toggle in the marker menu when you click on them on the timeline,) they’ll show up as yellow bars on your clip like in the image below. This can be helpful for marking specific points where you want audio to kick in.

Back at the Editing menu, you can now add Radio and Score tracks to your work. You can’t choose from every single radio track in the game, sadly, but there are still a fair few to go at. I found myself curiously drawn to “Living in a Box” by Living in a Box. From the album … Living in a Box . Yes.

GTA 5

You get the idea.

Red Carpet Screenings

To finalise your creation, choose Export on the Rockstar Editor menu to drop it into your completed video clips gallery. You can choose between a few bitrate options here, as well as 30fps vs 60fps. Encoding will take a minute or so, depending on clip size.

Uploading the finished clips to YouTube requires you to link Rockstar Social Club and Google accounts and agree to some skeezy legal things (sadly,) and I’m not yet aware of a work-around. The clips are saved in the Rockstar Games\GTA V\videos folder inside My Documents (close to where you drop tracks for Self Radio,) but they’re in a weird ‘.clip’ format.

Edit 21 April: Many thanks to reader ‘ViciousViper79’ who says “The rendered videos are stored as mp4 under %USER%/AppData/Local/Rockstar Games/GTA V/videosrendered”. They are indeed, so that means you can pull them out and mess with them at your leisure.

In my experience, uploading from the Rockstar Editor may also just randomly fail without much explanation. Persist, and it should work. It takes a while.

Here’s my extremely simple “Cable Car Clown.”

Not exactly Hideo Kojima (and the textures look a bit knob due to my lower PC specs,) but you get the idea. There’s an optional toggle in GTA 5’s Editor settings (the same place you allocate disc space and so on) which implies it can upload the video in a higher graphical quality than the one it was recorded in. I had this toggled to “on,” but with the added YouTube compression it’s hard to say whether that made a big difference. Still, you might want to play with that too.

While GTA 5’s Director Mode has clear limitations in terms of how you’re able to ‘stage’ a scene, I think we’ll be seeing some fairly impressive creations emerging from this tool in the next few weeks. This basic guide to getting started has hopefully encouraged a few more to give it a try.

GTA 5: How to Enter Director Mode

Players looking for details on how to access Director Mode in Grand Theft Auto 5 can look here, and see tips on which features are available.

As a game that has been out for multiple years across different platforms, Grand Theft Auto 5  is full of features. One of the most creative options in GTA 5  is the Director Mode, which gives players full control over the game world. This mode is available on PC and console, but it may not be immediately clear how to access the function.

With significant freedom to manipulate characters, objects, and even weather, players are able to put their creativity to the test using Director Mode. Since  Director Mode released back in 2015 , fans have utilized the feature to make cinematic stories and videos set in the world of GTA 5 .

RELATED: 10 Near-Impossible Things You Never Thought You Could Do in GTA V

Rockstar Games makes it pretty simple to enter the mode and start creating. The easiest ways are to access Director Mode from either the Rockstar Editor menu or the Interaction menu. However, if already in game, players can still jump into the mode without much effort. Just boot up the mobile phone from any of GTA 5 's protagonists and select the contact "Acting Up." Keep in mind, if in a mission, driving a vehicle, or on the run from the law, Director Mode will not be accessible.

Now that the feature has been opened up, players will need to select a single actor from a host of various categories. These include anything from animals to military personnel, and even online characters. From there, the world is the player's oyster, and a bunch of different options can change around. For instance, setting times of day or weather effects to create a specific atmosphere. Users can activate classic GTA 5  cheats like Explosive Melee or Super Jump to add flair to their cinematic masterpieces.

One thing to note is that Director Mode does have limitations. Primarily, random events and minigames are unavailable while playing around with it, so players should not expect to make any hunting videos either. Unfortunately, certain side characters from the main game are also not a part of the mode. Recognizable faces like Clay Simmons or Lester Crest will not appear, to name a few. Even with these restrictions, this feature is perfect for fans looking to interact with the Grand Theft Auto 5  world after beating the game . As an option easily available, Director Mode offers a great way for players to flex their creativity.

Grand Theft Auto 5  is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions in development.

GTA 5: Director Mode [Definitive Guide]

Here is our complete guide on how to use the director mode in GTA 5 and what makes it special.

If you get bored of one gameplay mode, you can always pick a director mode to start your cinematic experience in GTA V through a Director Mode.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • Director Mode is a gameplay mode where players completely control the game mechanics.
  • There are three main methods to open the Director Mode.
  • You can open the Director Mode from the main menu , using the interactive menu  or activating cheat codes .
  • Director Mode is jam-packed with features such as playing any character from the game, using different camera angles, and having complete control over the game environment.
  • You can even record these video clips in GTA 5, which are automatically saved in the game files.
  • Complete cheats are available for the players to use, and you can quickly turn them on or off.

One of the primary reasons for the game’s success is the freedom and creative control given to the players. The ever-growing and consistent fan base is hard to maintain when the game is already out for a decade.

Gameplay Mode or Director Mode was launched on the PC version of the GTA 5 on the release. Yet, this mode did not become part of the game’s console version until two years later during a Freemode Update . I consider the Director Mode an entirely new and exciting way to play the game.

How To Open The Director Mode

There are three ways you can access the director mode in-game. However, I should remind you that you cannot access the Director Mode if you are inside a vehicle or wanted, are currently part of a mission, or are in the middle of a cut scene.

  • You can access the Director Mode through the main menu.
  • First, open the main menu while in the game; next up, slide right until you get to the option ‘ Rockstar Editor .’
  • Rockstar Editor is the tool game developers provide to record and create clips in the game.
  • You can record your story missions, gameplay, and even online missions. This tool allows you to edit the videos you record, where you can crop a video, select camera angles, and add filters.
  • Once you have entered Rockstar Editor, you will see the Director Mode.
  • Now you can select the Director Mode, which will take you to the casting trailer.
  • This is an easier method of entering into the Director Mode.
  • First of all, open the Interaction Menu on your game.
  • You can do this by pressing the ‘touchpad’ on your PS4 controller or the ‘ view button ‘ on your Xbox controller. On your PC, you need to press the ‘ M ‘ key on your keyboard to access this menu.
  • You will see the Interaction Menu in the top left corner of your screen. Then, head down to the Director Mode and select the option to enter the mode.

There is even a cheat code in GTA 5 to enable the Director Mode. This is a secret way to access the Director Mode. If you are playing on a console, you can pull up your in-game cell phone and type 1-999-57-825368 . If you are playing the game on PC, you can simply type in the cheat code JRTALENT .

Features In Director Mode

Stepping into Director Mode, I immediately sensed the distinctions from the familiar Story Mode, even though the gameplay mechanics remained mostly the same beneath it all. Here are some notable features of the Director Mode:

  • You can’t access Barbershops or Clothing Stores while in Director Mode.
  • Los Santos Custom is off-limits, and you cannot enter it while you are in director mode.
  • There are no Random Events while playing in director mode, and you can’t even play Minigames.
  • Hunting is also not permitted in the Director Mode.
  • You can’t enter buildings that are specific to missions.
  • You have minimal access to your mobile phone features, and only the Snapmatic camera app works on the Phone.
  • You have to kill NPCs to get weapons, as no weapons are lying around the map.
  • You can’t hire Prostitutes.
  • If you have the invincibility cheat on and the actor gets busted by the cops or knocked out, you go back to the casting trailer menu.
  • Like the GTA 5 Ghost of Mount Gordo and Thelma and Louise scene, the easter eggs still appear.
  • You can only use the first-person view if you play as one of the protagonists or one of the GTA Online characters.
  • Some actors have special abilities, such as the Blaine Country Sheriff. If you play as the Blaine County Sheriff, law enforcement officers won’t attack you unless you run into them or have the NOOSE chasing you with a very high wanted level.

A vital benefit of the Director Mode is your ability to select different characters and control their actions. You will be taken to the casting trailer as soon as you launch the Director Mode.

The first thing you would need to do is to pick an actor. There is a wide range of actors that you can select that cater to your vision. There are seventeen character classes, so you are never out of options.

The game also allows you to pick the gender of your character. You can even decide to be an animal if you want. However, you must remember to unlock some of these characters.

You can unlock most of these actors from the casting list by playing the in-game campaign and missions. If you want to open animals in your actor casting list, you must open them through the Peyote Missions in story mode.

You can pick from the following Actor types:

  • Emergency Services
  • Heist Characters
  • Online Characters
  • Professionals
  • Special Characters
  • Story Characters

As I went deeper into Director Mode, the thrill of manipulating camera angles became my secret weapon, providing a cinematic viewpoint to weave my narrative. When you start recording, the game records what you see on your screen and part of the world around you.

Think of it as a bubble around your scene. Inside this bubble is everything the game records. This bubble is red colored to indicate your boundary.

You can move your camera around the bubble and place it at any angle. You do not need to worry about this while recording, as this process comes in later in the editor, where you can change your camera angles. Remember that you can only keep your camera within this bubble, as the editor will not allow you to leave the bubble.

This camera control gives the players an amazing amount of freedom to shoot a scene from many angles. You can zoom in and out of a scene, which is great for close-ups.

You not only have control over your characters, but you can also control the environment. You can change the weather for your scene or between times of the day. Even shooting on location will not be a problem here, as the game lets you change location without effort.

These are some of the commonly available weather options:

  • clear skies
  • thunderstorm

Not only can you control the weather, the time of the day, and your current location. You do not need to worry about losing the sunlight for your shots as you control the time in the game. It does not just take you to a time of the day but allows you to fine-tune to the exact time you want.

As I aimed to spice up my scenes, the Director Mode granted me the power to effortlessly toggle cheats with a simple keypress, reshaping the dynamics of my creative canvas. If you do not want the police interfering while creating your masterpiece, you can toggle the wanted status to disable.

You can also toggle it to high if you want all five stars and create a clip with the full force of GTA’s police force. Moreover, you can even control the game’s Pedestrian Density and Vehicle Density. You can even select the Garage Option, which allows you to spawn many different vehicles.

My Experience With Director Mode

While exploring GTA 5’s features, I stumbled upon a hidden gem – the Director Mode. It’s an awe-inspiring tool often tucked away, overlooked by many players. Yet, once discovered, it unfolds a massive array of imaginative choices, a playground where your creativity knows no bounds.

What struck me most was the accessibility of this feature. Remember that it’s free if you already have the game. The intuitive design ensures that within a few hours, you can master its intricacies.

No need for additional downloads or hours spent grappling with video editing software. It’s a direct route from imagination to execution.

Director Mode Overview

How to get the director mode, conditions for director mode, shortlisting, unavailable characters, time of day, wanted status, pedestrian density, vehicle density, restricted areas, invincibility, flaming bullets, explosive bullets, explosive melee, slidey cars, low gravity, remaining minor features, scene creator, return to casting trailer, quit director mode, drawbacks to director mode, question: is there a cheat code to access director mode, question: can i access all the characters in director mode, question: can i use cheats in directors mode.

We all remember the good old days on Youtube. You looked up Kennypaas and Flying Kitty, channels that made some of the funniest GTA San Andreas videos at the time. They took character dialogue and short clips to piece together hilarious storylines that garnered millions of views. It’s good to see these content creators are still kicking it to this day.

However, accessing character models and extracting dialogues from the videogame is a time-consuming and tedious process. It goes without saying these creators and many others like them put in hours upon hours of effort to provide us with such unique content. On the bright side, it seems Rockstar took notice of this and added a neat feature to help such creators out. Welcome to a GTA V Director Mode Guide.

Rockstar knew that their userbase thoroughly enjoyed fanmade movies, and with that in mind, they went ahead and introduced something revolutionary to GTA V: The Director Mode . While we didn’t get access to the feature upon the game’s release, it was included as a later addition when the game got ported over to PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

With Director Mode, players can create anything they want, whether it be movies, youtube shorts, or comedy sketches, with the full power of the GTA V Engine.

how to use director mode gta

There are multiple ways to gain access to Director Mode. Normally, you can access it through the Rockstar Editor Menu or Interaction Menu. Furthermore, accessing the Director Mode via a cellphone call by the name of Los Santos Talent or just directly dialing the contact’s actual number (1-999-57-825368) is possible.

Once you get into director mode, you can pretty much do anything you want. You can change your characters on the fly or even play as NPCs. You can also access a wide range of cheats such as super jumping, power punching, low gravity, etc. In a nutshell, you can basically “direct” the game while playing it!

One thing you must note while trying to use Director Mode is that you must meet a certain set of conditions. If you have a wanted level, it’s best if you lose it, as it turns out that you can’t use Director Mode while having an active Wanted Level.

Other than that, make sure you’ve quit all your active missions, as you can’t use Director Mode while actively playing through a mission. Moreover, Director mode doesn’t work in cutscenes either, so skip them.

Let’s not forget that you can’t use Director Mode during a session or lobby of GTA Online . If you attempt to do so, you’ll get a message saying that “Director Mode is currently unavailable” Tough luck, buddy.

Director Mode Menu

Director Mode Menu

Once Director Mode is active, you get to see your character sitting in a casting trailer. If you’ve played the game, you know this trailer very well as it’s the one you see in Vinewood while you’re working for Solomon Richards.

In Director Mode, think of the whole world as your very own oyster. You get to select between a wide range of 17 different types of characters that you want to use or play as. These range from animals such as dogs, cats, and eagles to human personalities such as gang members, laborers, military personnel, or special characters from the game.

Do bear in mind that you’ll initially have access to a limited number of characters in Director Mode, which is a shame. However, as you play along with the game’s story and encounter different kinds of personalities, those characters will get unlocked in Director Mode with a visible HUD notification.

Let’s not forget that some of these characters also have customization options, allowing you to change their outfit in whatever way available. However, if some NPC has a piece of headgear, mask, or anything covering their face, you sadly can’t get rid of it to see what’s underneath.

You can shortlist up to 10 actors for you to choose from while on the fly in Director Mode. This allows you to change characters without needing to take a trip to the Casting Trailer. Furthermore, if you try to add the 11th character, the game will prompt you with a message which states that this will remove the first character from the list.

It’s sad to say that you can’t use any of the following characters and NPCs in Director Mode. You can’t access Lester from the GTA V Story, which is a bummer. Then, Molly Schultz, the lawyer, is inaccessible as well. The Serial Killer and Actor Peter Dreyfuss isn’t available either. Ursula, the booty call character? You can’t use her as an actor as well.

There’s a long list of other characters that are basically unavailable in Director Mode. Hopefully, Rockstar will release them in a future update.

Settings Menu

You can access the Settings menu by moving down to the Interaction menu for the Director Mode. Here, you have a wide range of tools at your disposal that enable you to alter the world of San Andreas to cater to your needs. You can practically change the weather, gravity, and time of the day and also access a few cheats.

Time of Day Settings

You can manipulate the time of the day with this setting, which is pretty obvious from the title. Each of the times enables you to cycle through an already set hour of the game. Moreover, you can cycle through either Midnight, which is at 12 am, or go through many of the pre-set times, such as

Don’t like the atmosphere or the weather? Is the sun too blazing hot for you, or would you like a bit of snow because you’re in a festive mood? Well, Rockstar offers you a plethora of weather modes to choose from in Director Mode. What’s fun is that this is the only way to get a chance to enjoy snowfall in the game’s Singleplayer mode other than through the cheat menu.

You can cycle between the following weathers in Director Mode

  • Broken Cloud

Wanted Status Settings

We all know you can easily get your Wanted level up by shooting a police officer or committing mass genocide, but what if you could change it with the help of a few keystrokes? Well, Director Mode does exactly that! It allows you to change your Wanted level at your own liking and will.

More specifically, you can also cycle to Low (2 stars), Medium (3 stars), or High (5 stars). You can also disable the mechanic altogether, which causes you to gain no wanted level at all. But still, if you harm or hurt police officers, security guards, pedestrians, or the military, they will still go after you! You can’t disable those vigilante citizens that try to do good when you commit a crime, either.

You can also choose the number of citizens and pedestrians on your screen or the desired location at a time. You can make an area very crowded or turn it into an absolute ghost town. The choice is all yours.

This option controls the number of vehicles that appear in a location or on the roads. You can choose to clog traffic on a highway, have a cramped parking lot, or have an empty highway by choosing the None option.

Do note that the None will also despawn other vehicles such as trains and aircrafts, with the exception of trailers and UFOs.

Militar Base

You must’ve had some run-ins with the laws when visiting restricted areas such as those owned by the military, the police department, or the altruists. However, you can choose to disable the restricted area option from these regions altogether.

While the military and police will not come after you with this option enabled, do note that the private Merryweather militia over at the LS Nava Port will still try to get their hands on you regardless.

Invincibility Mode

Now, we’re moving on to the spicier options in Director Mode. Players can choose to be invincible in Director Mode by turning the setting on. This will prevent you from dying; you can get hit by cars, bullets, grenades, rocket launchers, a train, heck, you can even fall from the highest building in Los Santos, and you won’t lose a drop of health.

That’s not to say you won’t experience the physical effects of these events. For instance, you will still get your clothes dirty from blood stains and injuries, but all of them will be cosmetic in nature. Besides that, cars and projectiles will also still knock you over, so be prepared for that.

This is another cheat that’s featured in Director Mode known as the Flaming Bullet, which enables you to launch bullets on fire at practically anything. It’ll set the grass, a car, a tree, or a person on fire and deal double the damage.

Use it at your own risk, as you can still catch on fire!

Flaming Bullets are fun and all, but what about Explosive Bullets? They’re much faster and much more effective than your average grenade or explosives launcher. Enable this option, equip a machine gun, and see the whole world explode!

If you get your hands on a Buzzard during a session of Director Mode with the exploding bullets cheat activated, the guns on the Buzzard will launch exploding bullets. That’s because they’re essentially a portable minigun that you carry as a two handed-gun.

Pedestrian Explosive Melee

Now, this is an interesting superpower cheat. This command allows you to make your opponents, be it pedestrians or cars to, explode and launch upon a melee attack’s impact. However, it might also knock you over and deal some self-damage, so use it at your own risk. We’d recommend pairing this cheat with Invincibility before sending people to heaven, literally

While Super Jump enables you to jump to newer heights, falling from those heights means more damage, which is why you should also have Invincibility enabled. You don’t want to be having fun but suddenly get wasted, right?

This cheat affects the physics of the game. Essentially, all the cars in your vicinity lose all of their grip and start to slip on the roads. You can barely control, brake, or handle any of your vehicles while this command is active. What’s the fun of using this cheat? I personally don’t know.

Driving a Motorcycle in Low Gravitiy

The Low gravity option does exactly what it said it does. It lowers gravity and makes it so you’re walking or driving on the moon. Just don’t jump out of a plane with this cheat, as it’ll take a long time before you hit the ground. Of course, make sure Invincibility is on because you’ll still die to fall damage with this cheat on.

The Clear option basically wipes the entire screen and vicinity from all the objects, vehicles, and pedestrians (dead or alive) from the screen. Use it to clean up the set for your next big project quickly!

The remaining settings are pretty normal. For instance, one enables you to view a list of the actors you’ve recently used, while another allows you to spawn an actor into your desired location of the map.

Note: Some of these effects will be disabled under some particular circumstances. For example, the Super Jump command will be turned off whenever you enter a building or walk into a tunnel. Besides that, players will lose the low gravity ability if they ever happen to dive into a body of water.

Lastly, one more thing to note is that the player will be disarmed if you ever change a setting with a weapon equipped.

Interaction Menu

You can access all the following features while you’re using Director Mode with the interaction menu so long as you’re on the map or on foot!

Locations Change Setings

Using this option, you can switch your location and teleport to different areas of San Andreas. You can select a wide variety of locations to direct your very own movies, such as the Docks near Los Santos Beach. There’s always Vinewood Hills to film with its exotic villas and homes.

Then, Fort Zancuodo in the middle of the desert can make for a great alien abduction movie. You also have The Lighthouse, the observatory, Mount Gordo, the Sawmill, the Altruist Camp, and a whole lot of other locations to teleport to.

Rock Actions

Players can access a wide variety of actions that are normally not available in the GTA V Story Mode. You can only access these actions in GTA Online or in the Director Mode.

For example, you can flip the bird or your middle finger or do the respectable Salute from GTA Online. Then there are the thumbs up, the wave, the shush, The DJ, the air guitar, and a whole lot of other actions to choose from.

You can also let your actor speak a few lines of dialogue while using Director Mode. These dialogues are taken from GTA Online, so experiment with whatever dialogues you can get your hands on through the interactive menu to create your very own movie.

The Scene Creator option allows you to change or add props, objects, and obstacles in Director Mode.

Trailer

You can return to your cozy casting trailer by using the interactive menu to change or add new characters. Players can also change up and edit all of the commands available in the Casting Trailer Menu of Director Mode.

Done with your movie and satisfied with taking your time in Director Mode? Want to start a session of GTA Online or just mess around again in Story Mode? You can do that by just simply quitting Director Mode from the interactive menu.

While Director Mode offers you a wide range of commands to choose from to direct your own movie, it also creates a few setbacks that prevent you from accessing some of the locations and content from the story mode.

  • You can’t walk into any barber shops or clothing stores. So, shopping or getting a hair-do is off the list in Director mode.
  • Many of the Random Events available in the game don’t work in director mode as the characters won’t spawn at all. You can’t play any of those fun minigames, nor can you go for a hunt in the woods like Trevor. Amusement Park activities are out of the question, too, and you can’t watch any movies in Director Mode either. The Mount Chiliad Cable Car is literally non-functional in Director Mode.
  • You can’t enter the Vanilla Unicorn in Director Mode. Buildings where the story missions take place, can’t be accessed either, which is a bummer. You can still enter safehouses and a few places such as the Pacific Standard Bank, where the heist took place. Some other places you can access also include the Meth Lab, Liquor Stores, and Convenience Stores, but you can’t rob the stores. Tough luck, buddy!
  • The Phone doesn’t work either in Director mode. You can’t use its access services either. The only thing that works is the Snapmatic Camera.
  • Ammu-Nation can’t be accessed, and you can’t find any weapons around the map either. You can’t find any attachments or use finishes for any of your weapons unless the attachment can be accessed by default.
  • Unfortunately, GTA Online Locations such as The Diamond Casino Resort, Arcades cannot be accessed in the director’s mode! The only exception to this rule is the Pacific Standard Public Deposit Bank over at Vinewood, which you could already access in the story mode when Rockstar added it to GTA Online.
  • Just like Merryweather Security, the Lost MC will be hostile and attack the player if you try to approach and enter the Lost MC Clubhouse over at East Vinewood. This happens regardless of the player or actor you’re controlling in Director Mode. This happens with practically all of the gangs in GTA V, be it the Los Santos Vagos over in Rancho, The GSF Families, and the Ballas in Grove Street.
  • You can’t use or access Los Santos Customs while playing the game. You can’t customize any cars during Director Mode. You can only repair stored vehicles by respawning them. Otherwise, heading over to Los Santos Customs Isn’t an option in Director Mode!
  • You can’t use parachutes if you’re using an NPC as an actor. Only the protagonists can use parachutes, making airplane evacuation scenes impossible without a protagonist.
  • Hookers will still show up in their normal regions during nighttime, but you can’t hire them this time! Big Whoop!
  • You can only access the First Person View model if you’re playing as one of the three main protagonists or using your GTA Online character. It’s possible that the NPC’s view models glitched out, and they couldn’t make tweaks for all the character models just for Director Mode!
  • If you exit Director Mode and head back into Story Mode, it’s possible that you won’t be able to get into a GTA Online session. It’s a pretty common error. You’ll get a prompt saying the servers can’t be reached. You can close and reopen the game, and GTA Online will start working again. It has been tested on the PS4 and works like a charm.

Answer: Of course, there is! There’s a cheat code for just about anything in the game, and for accessing Director Mode, it’s JRTALENT.

Answer: Sadly, No, you cannot access all the characters in Director Mode. Players can only access a small category of actors and NPCs from the 17 categories.

Answer: Players have access to a list of a few cheats or commands that can be enabled or disabled from the Casting Trailer Menu of the Director Mode. Some of them are Invincibility, exploding, flaming bullets, and super jumping.

And that’s pretty much it for the director mode guide. You can do pretty much anything in this mode – make your own home movies, create comedy sketches or actually get into some good cinematography if that’s even possible in GTA V. Human creativity is limitless, and we hope to see some good GTA movies made with Director Mode in the future!

Hope you enjoyed this guide today. We’ve got lots of great guides on the way on Grand Theft Fans, so make sure to be on the lookout. While you’re waiting, check out all the GTA guides we’ve written so far. Without a doubt, you’ll get a kick out of them. With that said, see you later, and stay tuned for more!
