El Nido is a first-class municipality in the province of Palawan . Most visitors take the common route of traveling by plane to Puerto Princesa, Palawan’s capital, and take a 5-hour van ride to El Nido.

Here’s our top pick of attractions of El Nido that you should not dare miss!

1. Big Lagoon

Big Lagoon - El Nido Tourist Spots

The most iconic photos you’ll see online if you look up El Nido will be those from the Big Lagoon. The combination of clear turquoise waters, majestic limestone mountains carpeted with luscious greens, and bright clear skies is a no-fail perfect profile photo every time.

The Big Lagoon is located on the east side of Miniloc Island. It’s usually the first top of tours that include it.

Your tour boat will drop its anchor on the deeper end of the waters. From there, you will need to kayak or swim your way to the Big Lagoon and enjoy the ethereal beauty of the placid waters and the jagged karst.

Big Lagoon - El Nido Tourist Spots

Your first view will be no less than magical—the two-facing limestone mountains create a portal-like opening to the Big Lagoon. Once you get to the shallower parts, hop off your kayak and dip in the refreshing waters.

Many tourists start taking selfies, but you can also keep paddling until you reach the end of the shallows. This is where the Big Lagoon photos are usually taken.

Don’t worry about your photos—you’ll be surprised how good your tour boat guides are at getting the perfect shots. With the harmonious and picturesque balance of blues, greens, grays, and beautiful sunshine, you’re guaranteed not to need any photo editing filters.

There are simply not enough words to describe the Big Lagoon, so we implore you never to miss this site!

2. Small Lagoon

Small Lagoon - El Nido Tourist Spots

Compared to the Big Lagoon, which is accessible through a wide and open channel, the Small Lagoon is a bit hidden. El Nido’s Small Lagoon can only be entered through a small crevice in the limestone rock wall on Miniloc Island.

To get inside the lagoon, you will need to kayak to get close to the entrance because big boats must stay on the deeper end. You can swim through it, but unless you’re a confident swimmer, you might just want to stick to kayaking.

Small Lagoon - El Nido Tourist Spots

The Small Lagoon is a pool of turquoise blue water surrounded by El Nido’s signature jagged karst with great spots for cliff diving. Check with your tour guides to make sure that you’re jumping onto the right spots.

3. Snake Island

Snake Island - El Nido Tourist Spots

An island full of snakes? Not really. Snaked Island is officially called Vigan Island. Locals call it Snake Island because of its shape, especially with its sandbar resembling a snake’s long and winding tail.

Snake Island is part of the Bacuit archipelago, and at fairly low tide, you can walk on the sandbar connecting it to mainland Palawan.

Yes, it’s quite extraordinary, and it gives you this child-like feeling of awe—walking from the mainland to Snake Island with nothing but a narrow strip of white sand in between turquoise waters. You can even stop by mid-way to swim and snorkel and, of course, take as many photos as your heart can handle.

4. Cadlao Lagoon

Cadlao Lagoon - El Nido Tourist Spots

The Cadlao Lagoon is a tiny adventure hub that will add a bit of adrenaline to your island-hopping adventure in El Nido.

There’s a small beach space where you can laze around, ample space on the aquamarine waters to snorkel and kayak, and an area for rock climbing.

The climb to the limestone mountain only takes about 10 minutes, and you need to be careful because the rocks are sharp.

If you feel like you might take a shot at this, even just a small chance, wear shoes with soles that can withstand the rocks. Flipflops will work, but shoes are definitely better.

5. Taraw Cliff

Taraw-Cliff-El-Nido-Tourist-Spots

The town of El Nido is known for its backdrop of jagged limestone mountains, and the idea of climbing them can be intimidating.

However, Taraw Cliff is actually doable even for amateur climbers, young and old alike.

The hike begins just in the middle of the town, with trails leading you to a jungle and then to rocky mountain walls.

A guide is absolutely compulsory since rocks may shift, and you’ll need somebody who knows which ones are steady and which ones are not.

Some locals will tell you it’s fine to go up with just flip-flops, but for safety purposes, we recommend wearing sturdy-soled shoes.

Humidity increases as you go up, and there will be many vertical climbs, but it’s worth it.

The summit gives you a panoramic view of El Nido and Bacuit Bay and is best at sunrise.

👉 Get your Taraw Cliff ticket! 👈

6. Talisay Beach

Talisay Beach - Things to Do in El Nido, Palawan

Because of its shallow and calm waters, Talisay Beach is a preferred lunch stop for some island tours.

The beach is located on Tapiutan Island, just a few minutes from Matinloc Shrine.

Talisay Beach is one of the lesser-known beaches in Palawan, but no less beautiful than its more famous counterparts.

You can laze around and chill on the beach, dip in the clear water, or snorkel to see its rich marine ecosystem.

7. Nacpan Beach

Nacpan-Beach-El-Nido-Tourist-Spots

Nacpan Beach is the longest beach in El Nido, stretching up to 4 kilometers!

This long stretch of white sand is lined with a few coconut trees, food stalls, and restaurants.

This must-see destination is a 30-45-minute drive from El Nido. If you don’t have a car, you can charter a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) or rent a scooter.

The road takes you on the mountain ranges, and some unpaved roads will get a bit bumpy and dusty, but once you get to Nacpan, you’ll understand why people endure all the discomfort.

👉 Book your El Nido Land Tour! 👈

From the parking area, you’ll think it might be just tourist bait.

But once you see the beach in full view, we promise you, you’ll find it hard to decide where to take a million photos of this serene and magnificent beach or run immediately to the crystal clear turquoise water.

Nacpan Beach - El Nido Tourist Spots

Aside from swimming, visitors can also go on an ATV ride, kayaking, and stand-up paddle-boarding.

Due to its location and sheer size, Nacpan does not get crowded, so it’s the perfect place to relax.

There are a few humble restaurants and drinking bars, so you can still have a little fun.

8. Lio Beach

Lio-Beach-El-Nido-Tourist-Spots

Lio Beach is more accessible than Nacpan Beach, which is located 15 minutes from El Nido.

The beach is located inside a privatized eco-tourism estate, which is also home to El Nido Airport.

Despite that, Lio Beach is free to access with free parking for everyone.

This long stretch of fine cream-colored sand with crystal clear water is lined with towering coconut trees.

Lio Beach - Things to Do in El Nido, Palawan

They also have a wooden boardwalk and pier where you can take exquisite photos of the sunset.

Lio Beach is lined with food stalls and restaurants, clothing and lifestyle shops, and a few drinking joints, but somehow, it has kept its exotic and secluded feel.

There is absolutely no reason to miss this paradise!

👉 Book a Speedboat Group Tour! 👈

9. Secret Beach

Secret-Beach-El-Nido-Tourist-Spots

If you’ve watched Leonardo de Caprio’s movie ‘The Beach’ and thought, “How cool would a secret paradise be?” Ask no more.

Secret Beach is one of the inspirations for that, along with the rest of the islands of Palawan.

The beach is on the edge of Matinloc Island and is surrounded by towering, majestic, jagged limestone, only accessible by a single, narrow crevice.

You’ll have to swim through the narrow opening to reach the untouched beauty of this secret beach.

Once inside, it’s easy to get lost in awe, and the place honestly feels hypnotic. It feels like you can simply forget the world and stay for good.

Even snorkeling here feels otherworldly. Pro-tip: bring an underwater camera or waterproof camera, or you might miss out on the really cool travel photos.

10. Seven Commandos Beach

Seven-Commandos-Beach-El-Nido-Tourist-Spots

Seven Commandos Beach is the best place to make friends and bond. This spot is lined with coconut and other trees and has a long stretch of sandy-coral beach and, of course, pristine and calm water.

This place is utterly special because, in the last few years, it has become a social hub.

The place is packed with tourists and locals either chilling, getting their tans, snorkeling, or even better—sharing a game or two of volleyball.

Seven Commandos Beach - Things to Do in El Nido Palawan

There are two rudimentary volleyball courts, and when we say everyone, we mean everyone gets to play.

There’s also a little nipa hut store for snacks and cold drinks, so you can grab a few cold beers and toast to new friends!

El Nido is one great adventure and an even greater paradise.

Many people who’ve always been to the town come back because even if you think you’ve seen it all, there’s still so much El Nido could offer.

Your Ultimate El Nido Travel Guide

El Nido cannot be missed if you are visiting the Philippines. Just a friendly reminder—do not pick up corals, sand, and other sea creatures out of the water.

Always secure your own bottled water, and when dining out, make sure the ice and drinks are served and made only with filtered water.

If you are working remotely, the internet connection in El Nido is extra slow.

Bring a book or something to keep you busy when it rains, as there is not much to do when that happens.

Ah, El Nido! If you’ve ever dreamt of turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and jaw-dropping sunsets, then you’re in for a treat. El Nido is not just another travel destination—it’s a slice of paradise on Earth.

And trust me, as someone who has traveled around the Philippines for years and recently traveled to El Nido, this place is a must-visit. It’s definitely in one of our top 3 best places to visit in the country.

But here’s a little tip from one traveler to another: if you really want to soak in all that El Nido has to offer, consider staying for 5 to 7 days. You won’t regret it!

In this El Nido travel guide, we’re sharing the things to do in El Nido Palawan that you shouldn’t miss!

Table of Contents

Best Things to Do in El Nido Palawan & Can’t Miss Tourist Spots

El nido island hopping tours.

Island hopping in El Nido

Bacuit Bay is nothing short of magical. With 45 paradise islands waiting to be explored, it’s no wonder island hopping is at the top of our list.

Depending on your adventurous spirit, you can choose from four different tours: Tour A, B, C, and D. Each offers a unique experience, so why not try them all?

Tour A: The Classic Experience

Big Lagoon

Includes: Big Lagoon, Shimizu Island, Secret Lagoon, Seven Commando, Payong Payong Beach

Tour A is what I like to call the “Classic El Nido Experience.” It’s perfect for first-timers and offers a bit of everything—stunning lagoons, pristine beaches, and snorkeling spots.

This was the only tour we managed to squeeze in our itinerary. Since we got sick for a few days in El Nido, we had to cancel some of our activities. But at least we have more reasons to go back! (We’re already planning our next trip while writing this article.)

Big Lagoon El Nido

The Big Lagoon is the star of the show, with its crystal clear waters perfect for kayaking or just floating around. Shimizu Island is a snorkeler’s paradise, teeming with marine life.

The Secret Lagoon, accessible through a small cave, feels like a hidden world of its own. But as much as I wanted to enjoy the experience, there were a lot of people. We had to line up to get inside the lagoon.

And the small opening with its sharp rocks didn’t help. Some of the people we were in the tour with wanted to get out as soon as they got in.

Seven Commando and Payong Payong Beach are great for lounging and sipping on fresh coconuts. Seven Commando is definitely my favorite beach. We wanted to just stay there the whole day but had to move on to the next part of the tour.

Seven Commando

There is, however, one luxurious resort at one end of the beach. Curiousity got me and I went ahead to check the resort. All of their rooms, suites, and villa have a beach view. If you want a full on island experience, I’d recommend them. Check rates and availablity .

I’d recommend tour A to anyone who wants a well-rounded El Nido experience.

👉 BOOK EL NIDO TOUR A

Tour B: The Explorer’s Dream

Entalula Island

Includes: Snake Island, Cathedral Cave, Cudugnon Cave, Entalula Island, Pinagbuyutan Island

Tour B is for the adventurous souls.

Snake Island features a unique sandbar that you can walk on during low tide. Cathedral Cave and Cudugnon Cave are awe-inspiring geological formations that make you feel like an explorer discovering uncharted territories.

Entalula Island is a beach lover’s dream with powdery white sand. On the other hand, Pinagbuyutan Island offers stunning panoramic views.

The El Nido tour B is perfect for those who love exploring and don’t mind a bit of trekking and climbing.

👉 BOOK EL NIDO TOUR B

Side Story: I know I said we only managed to book Tour A. But we got to eat our lunch at Entalula island. Our tour guides decided mid tour to dock at Entalula island instead because the place we were supposed to dock in was filled with our tourists.

We ate our boodle lunch and snorkeled a bit around the area. Entalula island is supper pretty. We hogged the whole beach to ourselves. I loved how our tour guides just decided “let’s go there instead”. Would 11/10 recommend them if you’re planning to book. We booked our tour on Klook .

Tour C: The Hidden Gems

Hidden Beach

Includes: Secret Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Helicopter Island, Talisay Beach

Tour C is all about discovering El Nido’s hidden gems.

The Secret Beach is a secluded area accessible only by swimming through a narrow opening in the rocks. Matinloc Shrine offers a blend of history and spirituality, along with breathtaking views.

Helicopter Island, named for its unique shape, is great for snorkeling. Talisay Beach is a less-visited spot, perfect for a peaceful swim.

I’d recommend tour C for couples looking for romantic spots or solo travelers seeking some solitude.

👉 BOOK EL NIDO TOUR C

Tour D: The Chill Vibes

Small Lagoon

Includes: Small Lagoon, Pasandigan Beach, Natnat Beach, Paradise Beach, Cadlao Lagoon

Tour D is the laid-back, chill tour of the bunch.

The Small Lagoon is like Big Lagoon’s quieter sibling, offering a serene kayaking experience. Pasandigan Beach is all about the chill vibes, perfect for sunbathing or reading a book.

Natnat Beach offers a secluded experience, while Paradise Beach lives up to its name with its stunning beauty. Cadlao Lagoon is another peaceful spot for kayaking or swimming.

This tour is perfect for those looking to relax and take things slow.

👉 BOOK EL NIDO TOUR D

El Nido Kayaking

Imagine paddling your way to secret beaches. Sounds dreamy, right?

Renting a kayak gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. And if you’re lucky, you might just spot some of the local wildlife. Turtles, anyone?

Most resorts and hotels have kayaks for rent. You can ask your own accommodation or find a few shops renting them out.

Surfing at Duli Beach

Duli Beach

If riding the waves is more your style, then Duli Beach is calling your name.

Getting there is part of the adventure, and once you arrive, you can take surfing lessons or simply enjoy the local food. The waves, the vibes—what’s not to love?

Ever thought of spending 4 days on a boat expedition?

With Big Dream Boatman, you can! Journey from El Nido to Coron or vice versa and witness some of the most breathtaking sights.

Ziplining Between Islands

For the thrill-seekers out there, how does ziplining 750 meters over Nacpan Beach sound? Exhilarating, right? Not only will you get an adrenaline rush, but you’ll also be treated to some of the most beautiful views in El Nido.

Aside from Nacpan Beach, Las Cabanas Beach also offers a zipline experience. We haven’t tried this but it looked fun to try from all the people ziplining above us in Las Cabanas.

Hiking Taraw Cliff

Taraw Cliff

If you’re looking to elevate your El Nido experience—literally—then hiking Taraw Cliff is a must.

It’s a 2-hour hike to the highest point in El Nido, and the panoramic view? Absolutely Insta-worthy!

But listen up, adventure junkies: don’t do it alone. Hiring a guide is crucial for navigating the tricky terrain. And oh, proper hiking shoes are non-negotiable. The rocks are very sharp. Safety first, selfies later!

👉 BOOK THE CANOPY WALK AT TARAW CLIFF

Relaxing at Nacpan Beach

Nacpan Beach

Ready to swap your hiking boots for flip-flops?

A 45-minute motorbike ride from town will land you at Nacpan Beach. This isn’t just any beach; it’s one of the best in El Nido. It’s a great day trip option from El Nido town.

Think golden sands, crystal clear waters, and enough space to find your own little paradise. Whether you’re into sunbathing, swimming, or beach volleyball, Nacpan has it all.

Corong-Corong Beach Walk

Corong-Corong Beach

For those who prefer a quieter beach experience, Corong-Corong is your go-to. It’s less crowded, equally stunning, and offers a different kind of serenity.

The best time to visit? Late afternoon, when you can enjoy a peaceful walk and catch the sunset. Early mornings are also a great time if you want the beach all to yourself.

You can try paddleboarding or simply sip on a fresh coconut. Ah, the simple joys of life!

Sunset at Las Cabanas

Las Cabanas

Speaking of sunsets, Las Cabanas (just in front of Las Cabanas beach resort) offers the most developed beach experience in El Nido. It’s the place to be when the sun starts to dip.

Grab a cocktail, find a cozy spot, and let nature do its thing. Trust me, the colors of the sky are like a live painting, and you won’t want to miss it.

Looking at the limestone cliffs with the sunset at the background just hits different.

Visit the Public Market

El Nido Public Market

Immerse yourself in local culture by visiting the Public Market.

You’ll find an array of fresh fruits, veggies, fish, and meat. It’s a feast for the senses! This is perfect if your accommodation came with its own kitchen.

The best time to go is early morning when the produce is freshest. And don’t forget to buy some local delicacies.

You’re in El Nido, after all—why not taste it?

Snorkeling Adventures

El Nido Snorkeling

If you’re a fan of the underwater world, El Nido’s snorkeling spots will leave you spellbound.

From vibrant coral gardens to schools of colorful fish, it’s like stepping into a real-life aquarium. Don’t forget your underwater camera; you’ll want to capture this!

Tour C is considered the best option if you want to go snorkeling!

Scuba Diving

For those who want to go deeper—literally— scuba diving is the way to go . El Nido has some of the most popular diving spots in the Philippines.

Whether you’re a newbie or a certified diver, there are options for everyone. Dive in and discover a whole new world beneath the waves.

The best time to go diving is from March to May.

Ryk and I haven’t tried diving yet, more on snorkeling, so if you’re interested, Lotte of Phenomenal Globe has a guide on diving in El Nido that you can check out.

Book a Yacht

Sailing Yacht Kalayaan

Okay, let me spill some tea. On our first day in El Nido, we booked the Sailing Yacht Kalayaan on Airbnb for around 120 USD a night, and let me tell you, it was the highlight of our trip!

And it’s one of the reasons why we want a yacht for ourselves. Sipping beer, paddling, kayaking, and watching the sunset—talk about starting a trip on a high note!

You can also book your own Catamaran group tour in El Nido for a private island hopping experience!

👉 BOOK A CATAMARAN GROUP TOUR

Rent a Bike

Want to explore El Nido on two wheels?

Renting a bike gives you the freedom to discover hidden spots that most tourists miss. It’s a different kind of adventure, and you get to set the pace. Just make sure to wear a helmet and follow the local traffic rules. Safety first!

We found our bike rental on Facebook but you can find a lot of shops renting out bikes in El Nido. The rate depends on how long you’re renting the unit and the model you plan on renting. If you’re planning to rent for more than a week, you can ask for a discount.

Camp at the Beach

Nacpan Beach Glamping

Ever tried beach camping?

If not, Nacpan Beach is the place to do it. And guess what? There’s even a glamping option if you like a little extra comfort.

Imagine falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking up to a beachfront sunrise. Pure bliss!

👉 BOOK A GLAMPING TENT

The hike is worth every step when you reach the waterfall and take that refreshing plunge. It’s nature’s way of giving you a pat on the back for your efforts.

Go Beach Hopping

El Nido Beach

Last but definitely not least, go beach hopping! El Nido is home to some of the most stunning beaches you’ll ever see. From hidden coves to bustling beachfronts, each one offers a unique experience.

El Nido

If we don’t include the beaches on the island hopping trips, Lio beach, Las Cabanas beach, Vanilla beach, Corong Corong beach, Malugao beach, Caalan beach, Nacpan beach, Lamoro beach, and Twin beach are some of the must visit beaches.

👉 BOOK BEYOND EL NIDO ADVENTURE

How to Get to El Nido

The quickest and most convenient way to get to El Nido is by flying. There’s a small airport in El Nido itself, serviced by a few local airlines. We flew into Puerto Princesa , traveled to Port Barton and then took a van to El Nido, which is another popular option.

The flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa takes about an hour, and the van ride to El Nido is around 5-6 hours. If you’re short on time or just want to get to paradise ASAP, flying is your best bet.

Boat Expedition

For the more adventurous souls, how about a multi-day boat expedition? It’s an experience of a lifetime. Companies like Big Dream Boatman offer 3-5 day expeditions from Coron to El Nido and vice versa, stopping at various hidden gems along the way.

It’s a fantastic way to see the less-visited parts of Palawan and truly immerse yourself in the beauty of the region.

If you’re coming from Coron, taking a ferry is another option . The trip lasts about 3-4 hours, and while it’s not as fast as flying, it’s usually cheaper.

The ferries are relatively comfortable, and you’ll get some pretty amazing views along the way. Just make sure to check the weather conditions before you book online, as trips can be canceled due to bad weather.

👉 BOOK A FERRY TICKET

How to Get Around

Renting a motorbike is one of the best ways to explore El Nido and its surrounding areas. It gives you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want.

We rented one for a couple of days and it was a blast. Just remember to wear a helmet and carry your driver’s license.

For short distances within El Nido town, tricycles are a convenient and affordable option. These are basically motorbikes with a sidecar, and they’re everywhere. It’s a fun way to get from point A to point B, and you’ll get to interact with the friendly local drivers.

Van Transfers

If you’re traveling in a group or prefer a more comfortable ride, van transfers are available. These are especially useful for trips from Puerto Princesa to El Nido , or airport transfers that start early in the morning. Most hotels can arrange van transfers for you, making it a hassle-free option.

Travel Tips

Tour package.

If you want to have a hassle-free trip, you can also book an El Nido tour package . Most tours include accommodation, breakfast or lunch, and an airport transfer. The price differs depending on how many island hops or tours you want to be included in your package. This is a good option if you’re a first-time traveler and just want to enjoy your trip without having to think about how to get from point A to B.

ATM Availability

El Nido has several ATMs. But make sure to bring enough cash to last you through your trip. Some of the ATMs run out of cash fast. Plus, not all shops and restaurants accept cards.

El Nido

Motorbike Rental

Renting a motorbike was one of the best decisions we made. It gave us the freedom to explore hidden beaches and off-the-beaten-path spots.

Just make sure you’re comfortable riding one, and always, always wear a helmet. Most rental places will ask for your ID as a deposit.

Travel Insurance

I can’t stress this enough—get travel insurance! In cas something happens, having insurance can save you from a hefty medical bill. It’s one of those things you hope you never have to use, but you’ll be glad you have it if you do.

El Nido

WiFi and SIM Cards

WiFi in El Nido can be hit or miss. Most hotels and cafes offer it, but it’s not always reliable. You can buy a local SIM card with a data package to help you navigate and stay connected. Trust me, it’s worth the few bucks!

Environmental Considerations

El Nido is stunning, and let’s keep it that way. We made it a point to carry reusable water bottles and bags. Many places also offer refill stations for water, so make use of those. And please, if you’re smoking, don’t toss your cigarette butts on the beach. Let’s be responsible travelers!

Drinking Water

There has been a recent issue with drinking water in El Nido. We learned this the hard way and let’s just say, it wasn’t pretty. Always opt for bottled water or, better yet, use a water bottle with a built-in filter. Your stomach will thank you.

It also helps to read reviews of the restaurants you’re planning to eat in. Stay updated by checking the latest reviews on Tripadvisor.

El Nido

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, which runs from January to April, is generally the best time to visit. But if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, consider going during the shoulder months. Just be prepared for a few rain showers.

Flying Drones

There’s no ban on flying drones in El Nido but there are a lot of lost drones here. The limestone rock formations messes with the signal. This is one of the reasons why tour guides caution drone owners when there are towering limestone cliffs in sight.

That’s one problem. But here’s another one, there are a lot of eagles in El Nido who love to hunt drones. Yup. Our tour guides have told us several stories where drones crashed because an eagle started attacking it mid air. Some even bring the drones back to their nest.

This made it hard for us to fly our drone but our tour guides were very helpful in providing us information on where we can fly safely.

Seven Commando

El Nido is a paradise that caters to every type of traveler.

Whether you’re into extreme sports, underwater adventures, or simply soaking up the sun, El Nido has got you covered. And with these travel tips, you’re all set for a hassle-free and unforgettable trip.

We hope our El Nido guide has helped you plan the perfect itinerary!

20 Awesome Things To Do El Nido: The Ultimate Guide

Palawan is the crown jewel of the Philippines and El Nido is arguably the most impressive spot in Palawan. With it’s dramatic, enormous limestone cliffs, unbelievable lagoons, and pristine beaches it truly is paradise on earth.

What makes El Nido even more appealing is that it can be done on a very tight budget for a backpacker or you can enjoy luxury hotels. Either way, the island-hopping tours, the key feature of an El Nido experience, are $15-$20 per day no matter what your budget is. The town itself of El Nido has a simple charm with reggae bars, beach restaurants, and a low-key atmosphere.

I’ve been to El Nido twice and on both my visits stayed for at least ten days, which was a great amount of time to explore on land and on the sea! I’ve done all of the island-hopping tours except tour D (although I’ve kayaked most of Tour D) and visited many of the beaches and hikes on land. In this blog post, I’ll share with you many of the awesome things to do in El Nido. There are several great beaches, an insane hike and of course the four incredible island0-hopping tours.

Table of Contents

BEST THINGS TO DO IN EL NIDO – MY PERSONAL PLANNING TIPS

1. Make sure you do at least two island hopping tours and one of them needs to be Tour B or Tour D. A and C are great but can be popular and crowded. Tour B and D are both awesome, just different and not as grand scale in the attractions the offer.

I highly suggest these as you have a more relaxed day but of course, do either A or C for that epic El Nido adventure. If you have time do three or four.

2. Make sure you do one or two day-trips inland. There are lots of surf beaches and things to explore and with a $5 bike rental, you will have a great expedition.

3. If you are in okay shape, DEFINITELY hike Taraw Peak. One of my favorite (short) hikes in Asia. Epic. Epic. EPIC.

4. One day hire a kayak from El Nido Town and explore Cadlao Island at your own pace without the craziness of the island-hopping crowds. Chill out on the islands and take it easy.

So with those tips covered, I’ll know head into all of the best things to do in El Nido. I’ll start first with the island hopping because it is phenomenal but after the island hopping you will find the beaches, hikes and other things to do in El Nido as well as my suggestions on where to stay.

20 BEST THINGS TO DO IN EL NIDO

Island hopping in el nido, palawan.

I was lucky enough to experience Tour A , Tour B   and Tour   C , but have not yet made it on Tour D. However, even the day I paddled out on a kayak was amazing so don’t stress about which ‘letter tour’ will be the best. It’s El Nido, you are going to be visiting lagoons and beaches that will blow your mind no matter what tour you are on.

To book your EL NIDO ISLAND HOPPING A TOUR you can Click Here to check the availability and book online (It’s just $18 USD)

  • It includes Three Lagoons at Miniloc Island, Shimizu Island, Snorkel with turtles at Seven Commando Beach, BBQ Lunch

To book your EL NIDO   ISLAND HOPPING B TOUR you can Click Here to check the availability and book online (It’s just $18 USD)

  • It includes Snake Island, Pinagbuyutan Island, Cudugnon Cave, BBQ Lunch

To book your  EL NIDO   ISLAND HOPPING C TOUR you can Click Here to check the availability and book online (It’s just $18 USD)

  • It includes Helicopter Island, Secret Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Talisay Beach, BBQ Lunch

To book your  EL NIDO   ISLAND HOPPING D TOUR you can Click Here to check the availability and book online (It’s just $18 USD)

  • It includes Cadlao Island, Pasandingan Beach, Small Lagoon, Natnat Beach, BBQ Lunch

Below I will show you what each tour looks like and describe the locations you will visit so that you can decide which tour you are keen for.

Tour A : Most popular and includes big and small Lagoon. Key attractions but can get crowded. Awesome day! View my full blog post about Tour A: Click Here

Tour B: A more relaxed day with off-beat island locations, hardly any crowds, epic landscapes. View my full blog post about Tour B: Click Here

Tour C: Second most popular, great snorkeling and the secret lagoons and beaches are amazing. View my full blog post about Tour C: Click Here

Tour D: Shorter tour much closer to El Nido, underrated and less crowded.

El Nido Island Hopping Tour A

Seven commando beach.

Coconut trees lined Seven Commando beach and we, of course, sipped on a few after a quick snorkel. Our boat docked here for a 45-minute chill/exploration session. Many people snorkeled but we just hung out on the beach and had a swim.

The rocks in El Nido are incredibly sharp, Seven Commando Beach was no exception. Wear shoes if you are planning on exploring in caves and on rocks like us.

On my second visit to Seven Commando Beach, I also did a beach clean-up. El Nido is making great changes but trash on the islands still remains prevalent.

BIG LAGOON EL NIDO

Cruising up the lagoon was our first real look at how dramatic the cliffs and landscape was in El Nido. The lagoon has a narrow and the boats manage to navigate alongside each other as everyone on board arches their necks checking out the intense cliffs. The boat glides across the glassy water, almost crystal as the narrow entrance finally opens up into a giant lagoon. The boat did a slow circle in the lagoon letting us take in the sights before heading back out the narrow stretch.

LUNCH AT SHIMIZU ISLAND EL NIDO

Our guides had been cooking on the grill all morning as we cruised around from island to island. It was time to see what they had produced. It was an absolute feast.

I’ll be honest I’ve been on some tours where you get a cruddy sandwich and a bag of chips. This blew it out of the water. Grilled pork and chicken, fresh grilled fish and fruits and of course an abundance of rice.

There was plenty for everyone as we sat around on the logs watching monitor lizards amongst the trees. A bit of exploration post-lunch never hurts and we found a very shallow spot for a couple of jumps.

SECRET LAGOON EL NIDO

This spot was amazing but probably my least favorite as there were more than fifty tourists crammed into a tiny lagoon at once. We had to swim to a small hole and clamber through. One through sun shone down into a tennis court-sized lagoon, totally enclosed by sharp cliffs. It was a great spot but a little bit of an anti-climax.

However, the beach around the corner once back out of the lagoon was really cool. The landscape here was by far my favorite spot of the day and I camped on my favorite spot at the front of the tour boat as we left snapping a few shots to capture the entire scene. I have never seen anything like it before in my life.

The second time I visited Secret Lagoon in El Nido on Tour A , I was armed with a drone. It gave me a whole new perspective on the lagoon and the scale of the beach. I’ve added those photos below.

SMALL LAGOON EL NIDO

Our last stop of the day would be the small lagoon. By now I had become a bit desensitized to the majestic beauty all around me. But the small lagoon hit another chord.

We were offered kayaks as we arrived but also given the option to swim. Being the cheap guys Jorden and I were of course we swam. It wasn’t too far just a few hundred yards both ways.

Swimming through this lagoon was beautiful, calming and a great way to end the day. We went as far in as we could and just spend a while floating on our backs taking in everything around us.

The second time I visited Small Lagoon was actually with the Red Bull Cliff Diving team, which was a whole new experience. They had set up ladders to a platform and were jumping from 21m and 27m for their competition. I’ve put the video below about this epic experience.

El NIDO ISLAND HOPPING TOUR B

Pinagbuyutan island.

Pinagbuyutan Island is probably my favorite island in El Nido. It has huge towering cliffs that shoot straight down dramatically over the small stretches of the beach below. There’s nothing more than a shack and coconut trees on this desolate island.

When we rolled in there was just one local selling coconuts and no other tourists. It stayed that way for most of our visit.

We walked around the edges of the island in between the tall grass and scattered palms.  This is how island hopping is supposed to be. Quiet, relaxing and away from the crowds. Luckily for us, we were in no rush and actually spent several hours at Pinagbuyutan Island.

There are also some great snorkeling spots just off the shore with beautiful reefs waiting to be discovered below the surface.

ENTALULUA BEACH OR PAPAYA BEACH

One of the stops on Tour B in El Nido will be Entalula or Papaya Beach. Both are awesome and we hung out at Papaya Beach. It is quite similar to Seven Commando Beach, which you will find on Tour A. Beautiful clear water, a nice sandy beach with a backdrop of coconut trees.

This is a great stop to relax and chill on the beach with your friends. There aren’t too many activities here other than just hanging out and maybe sipping on a coconut from the local stand.

We did a beach clean-up at this stop and collected several large bags of trash. El Nido is making great changes but trash on the islands still remains prevalent. I have posted the video of the cleanup below.

SNAKE ISLAND

Snake Island is an epic spot, one I didn’t even know about until we arrived. So often in El Nido, all of the focus is on lagoons and secret beaches that anything else is almost pushed to the side. Anywhere else in the world and Snake Island would be the number one attraction.

This beautiful island arcs out into a sandbar that connects to the mainland at low tide. This area reminded me of a mini French Polynesia with the steep, green hills as a backdrop to the cerulean blue water.

I really enjoyed this spot and flying the drone here was so much fun with something to look at in all directions. Snake Island was a great surprise and not a spot I had seen before so it was great to be exploring something a little different in El Nido on Tour B.

CUDUGNON CAVE

On Tour B there are two caving opportunities. The first cave is Cudugnon Cave, which was actually super cool. The boat parks on the beach and then you crawl through a little hole into a hidden area inside the cliffs.

Here there are amazing rock formations and you can actually keep climbing up pretty high. It was remarkable that this cave exists hidden inside the cliff walls, out of view from passing boats.

el nido is the best tourist spot in palawan

CATHEDRAL CAVE

The second cave was pretty wild. Cathedral Cave was incredible and one of my favorite caves I’ve visited in the Philippines. You jump off the boat and either swim or kayak in. We swam inside despite our guide saying there were snakes. I’m still not sure if he was serious or not!

Inside huge stalagmites and stalactites hang from the roof and grow from the floor. It is mindblowing to look around at the rock formations inside this sea cave. Under the surface, the water has a luminescent glow so definitely bring your snorkel to enjoy this cave.

We explored it all the way to the back where things get quite creepy and gross but it is here that you can see the luminescent glow of the blue water on the walls. Make sure you go all the way to the back of the cave to look back towards the entrance to check that out.

EL NIDO ISLAND HOPPING TOUR C

Helicopter island.

The first island on the itinerary of Tour C in El Nido is the famous Helicopter Island. It isn’t hard to figure out how this island earned its name with a distinctive helicopter shape, visible from a side profile. It is incredibly busy… always but you can still have a great time here. You can hang out here on the beach or go for a bit of a walk but the best way to explore Helicopter Island is with your snorkel and mask.

When your boat docks walk down towards the left (while facing the island) and then snorkel around the corner. Here you will get away from the crowds and be able to explore some beautiful coral. There are also some unique shelves and rock formations under the cliffs if you go far enough. I embedded a video from my underwater exploration at Helicopter Island below.

MATINLOC SHRINE (OR NEARBY BEACHES)

Matinloc Shrine is a bit of a weird stop on an island hopping tour and it is probably the least impressive thing to do on Tour C. It is essentially an abandoned shrine.

Your captain will likely ask if you do indeed want to visit or just go snorkeling/visit another beach. I believe it costs extra to visit as well. All you do is get off and go look inside the abandoned building. Bit of a waste of time when there are beautiful beaches, reefs, and turtles nearby!

We chose to visit a nearby beach instead (no extra fee) and went snorkeling and exploring. The beauty of the area near Matinloc Shrine is that there are lots of different beaches, coves, and snorkel spots so your captain should be able to pick a  spot that isn’t crazy crowded!

Our captain took us to an amazing snorkel spot and beach but we just hung out on the boat and ate there. We snorkeled after but there was no need to get out and unpack the food we just ate it straight on the boat. I can’t remember the name of this spot for the life of me but most of the tours will choose lunch at one of a few spots.

HIDDEN BEACH

Hidden Beach is a cool little cove hiding behind the karst limestone cliffs. Your boat will drop you at the entrance and you swim/wade through the water until you make your way into the cove after about 200m.

It is usually very crowded in here although it is incredibly beautiful. If this cove was empty it would be one of my favorite places in El Nido but both times it has been full of life jackets and hundreds of people so it is often a bit more manic than magic. Nonetheless, I’ve always enjoyed sitting on the sand here and admiring the jagged cliffs and the beautiful scenery.

On my second visit to Hidden Beach, we did a cleanup and carried out 1.5 bags of trash and even swam out with it. It’s great to leave places better than when you found them and added a challenge to our Hidden Beach experience.

SNORKEL SPOT (TURTLES!)

Our final stop of the day was right next to Matinloc Shrine again where our captain told us there was a great reef. He wasn’t wrong and our guides even spotted a couple of turtles for us to swim with. There was a huge drop-off and it was an epic spot for free-diving and getting a closer look at the coral below.

There were some really cool table corals and lots of fish in this area. We were the only tourists enjoying this spot, which is what I liked about Tour C in El Nido. It seemed a bit more flexible than Tour A, which was all about the lagoons. Tour C was a bit easier to change depending on what you were interested in.

HIKE TARAW PEAK IN EL NIDO TOWN

Expect extreme humidity. That’s what to expect! Holy hell this was the most humid climb of my life. But seriously, expect a short, steep intense climb and then to enjoy an epic, epic view for sunrise on jagged rocks. If you like adventure and miss this one in El Nido, you messed up!

The trail winds through the small neighborhood before throwing you into the jungle. From the first minute, you are clambering more than following a trail or ‘climbing’. The jagged rocks mean that you are constantly concentrating so you don’t misplace a step as they are unforgiving.

There are sections that are relatively vertical but nothing too extreme. There were lots of amateur hikers and climbers both male, female, young and old on the trail so don’t be scared of this hike because of the sharp rocks.

There were a  few sections that were a bit sketchy but there is always something to hold on to. I’d say the level of difficulty for this hike is moderate to above average because of the rock clambering. I don’t want to discourage you from climbing Taraw Peak but some people may struggle or get frightened so I made sure to take these two photos in probably the two most sketchy spots.

Once we cleared the final little ascent the view opened up and what a view it is. You have a birds-eye view over El Nido town and the entire bay, where the island-hopping boats are all lined up for another day of touring. We could see all the way out to Cadlao Island and beyond.

VISIT NACPAN BEACH BY MOTORBIKE

A moped costs 350 Pesos or $7 USD. We split that between two people and you have your transport sorted for the day for a few dollars. Gasoline is usually only a couple of dollars. You will need to leave your passport with the rental person but that is fair, remember you have their bike!

Nacpan Beach is about 30 minutes away from El Nido town and one of the most pristine beaches in the area. The water clarity is perfect and coconut trees and chill cafes and bars line the beach. Down to the right is empty shoreline to hang out on and down to the left is a small hill to explore.

I remember hearing that there was great shrimp at Nacpan Beach and I can testify that it is true. My lunch was beautiful and I topped it off with a mango smoothie for good measure. Sorry, I forgot to take a photo, but let’s be honest you can’t taste a photo. Just trust me to get the shrimp.

CHECK OUT VERDE SAFARI BEACH

After Nacpan Beach our next stop was Duli Beach.. or so we thought. It was a 30-minute drive and after 40 minutes we thought we had finally arrived. The beach looked amazing but our map told us we had actually arrived at Verde Safari Beach. It was a blessing in disguise as this was an amazing stretch of shoreline that was entirely empty. A few fishing boats were resting on the shore in front of rows of coconut palms.

SURF OR HANGOUT AT DULI BEACH

With less than an hour before the sun would set we finally arrived at Duli Beach. A few small huts were scattered along the beach and only two local kids were trying to surf the whitewash. Jorden and I grabbed the GoPro and headed out deep into the thick of the action.

The locals thought we were drowning and were preparing a rescue before I came back and told them we were fine. Jorden headed in and I spent the entire sunset floating around in the impact zone. The waves were big but not barreling clean. This was one of my favorite nights from our one month trip in the  Philippines .

SUNSET AT LAS CABANAS BEACH

Almost every night I stayed in El Nido, I would run the 5kms from El Nido town up and over the hill to Las Cabanas beach for sunset. It became one of my favorite things to do in El Nido. It’s an incredible vibe down there with huge palms on the beach and the sun sets out over the horizon.

There is even a zipline over the water. I never had my camera as I was always running but have a few basic photos from my phone. Trust me this is one of the best sunset spots in El Nido.

The most epic activity you can do in El Nido on the land is to hike up Taraw Peak and I share the photos and tell you how you can use the same local guide as me in this blog post:  Hiking up Taraw Peak – What You Need to Know

Sunday 24th of December 2023

Hi, we're planning to visit Palawan next year. Unfortunately, due to our schedule in Puerto Princesa and Coron, we won't be able to explore El Nido extensively. However, we do plan to stay overnight in El Nido. We have some extra time from the morning until noon before heading to Coron. Is it feasible to visit beaches within the town during this time? What would you suggest?

Monday 4th of December 2023

I'm curious to know why you didn't mention the Taraw Hike was dangerous, and you need a guide.

Wednesday 13th of December 2023

@Nico, he mentioned both in the full blog post. https://www.journeyera.com/taraw-peak-cliff-el-nido/

Sunday 24th of September 2023

Hey mate, I will be going there next weekend, and I'm trail running training, so will need to do a 24km long run. I would love this to include some beach runs, beautiful views, even potentially the Tarawa hike, though it sounds like I couldn't run that very easily. Any ideas?

Awesome guide can't wait for my visit! Thanks for this!

10 Best Things To Do in El Nido, Palawan

El Nido in Palawan houses the most beautiful locations in the world. Hidden lagoons, limestone formations, sandbanks, stunning islands, and white beaches with blue water are just the tip of what the 7,641 islands in the Philippines have in store for you. The El Nido island hopping tours are the most popular reason to visit this little town, but there is more! Find out about all the things to do in El Nido in our complete travel guide.

Things to do in El Nido, Palawan

El Nido is located at the northern tip of Palawan Island. Together with Coron, it’s become one of the most popular locations to visit in the Philippines. Plan to spend 3 to 5 days here.

Here are all your hotel options in El Nido.

things to do el nido island hopping tour

1. El Nido Island Hopping Tour

A protected area called Bacuit Bay, hosting 45 paradise islands, has been named one of the most beautiful destinations in the entire world. Tours A, B, C & D all visit different islands, and all tours are stunning.

Stunning lagoons, movie-like islands, and beautiful wildlife – you’ll find it all in these island hopping tours in El Nido . This is a must-do in every Philippines Travel Guide .

Book your island hopping tour in advance

2. Rent a Kayak and Discover Secret Beaches

Rent a kayak and explore secret beaches around Cadlao island. The island across town has stunning wildlife like monkeys, big lizards, and hornbill birds. For a unique experience, rent a clear kayak in El Nido .

Please note: Taking plastic bottles to the islands is not allowed. Read more tips on how to reduce plastic while traveling .

3. Duli Beach – Pristine White Sand Beach

Duli Beach is an unknown 2-kilometer-long white beach in the far northern tip of El Nido, Palawan. There is a 50 PHP (1 USD) entrance fee to the beach.

10 Best Things To Do in El Nido, Palawan

The waves are good for beginner surfers; lessons are offered at Duli Beach. There are a few little drinks & a food shack. However, we don’t recommend getting food here. We and many others got sick from a simple rice & veggies dish.

Tip: Love the tropics? Don’t miss traveling to Siquijor Island .

To get to Duli Beach, rent a motorbike in El Nido and drive a beautiful one-hour route up north.

4. Boat from El Nido to Coron

Picture yourself gliding over crystal clear waters between El Nido and Coron (or vice versa) along some of the untouched beauty of the Philippines.

Embark on a 4-day expedition with Big Dream Boatman to explore crystal-clear waters, hidden lagoons, and abundant marine life. As you traverse the archipelago, you’ll find opportunities for adventure, moments of quiet reflection, and glimpses into the vibrant local culture. With Big Dream Boatman, you’re not just a tourist but a curious explorer. Be sure to book this journey in advance, as it’s a popular way to travel to El Nido.

Discover the expeditions of Big Dream Boatman here

5. Zipline Between Islands

Fly from one island to the other via a 750-meter-long zip line. How cool is that?! At Las Cabañas Beach, they offer this experience for 500 – 1100 PHP (~ 16 USD). It’s a thrilling, magical flight and a real must-do if you are into a bit of adventure. Take the flight around sunset for the best experience.

6. Hike Taraw Cliff

Climb up to the highest point of El Nido. For this tough 2-hour hike, it is recommended to hire a guide and wear proper shoes before you climb up these sharp rocks. Once at the top, you will have an incredible view over the entire area.

7. Nacpan Beach, El Nido Palawan

Nacpan Beach is one of the best beaches in El Nido. A great 45-minute motorbike ride from town takes you to the 4-kilometer-long beach with coconut trees along the entire coastline. The tip of Nacpan splits into Calitang Beach, where small beach shacks sell fresh coconuts, seafood, and beach beds.

philippines travel guide el nido nacpan beach

Nacpan can handle a lot of people, so it never feels too crowded. But if you don’t feel like joining the crowd, drive to Duli Beach instead. Sunsets on Nacpan are beautiful, but we don’t recommend you drive back to El Nido in complete darkness. It is also possible to visit Nacpan beach as part of an exciting jeepney day tour visiting multiple beaches and and the Bulalacao Waterfalls ( book a tour here ).

8. Corong-Corong Beach Walk

One of our personal favorite things to do in El Nido is to walk on Corong-Corong Beach during sunset. It is the quietest beach in town. Start following the coastline from Corong-Corong Bay all the way down to Boodle Fight Cafe to have a delicious Filipino dinner.

9. Watch the Sunset at Las Cabanas

Las Cabanas Beach is one of the most popular and developed beaches in El Nido. It is great for sunbathing, swimming, and having drinks or food at one of the many beach bars, and it’s the best beach to watch the sunset.

The tricycle fare is 150 PHP (2.60 USD) for two persons from town. We recommend getting a motorbike for 500 PHP (8.80 USD) per day instead.

10. Visit the public market

Every (early) morning at 4 AM, the local market sells fresh fruits, veggies, fish, and meat. Before heading on any motorbike trip, like towards Nacpan Beach, go get some fresh, uncut fruits there as a snack. Fresh, uncut fruits have no risk of holding bacteria. The market is located near Corong-Corong Beach on the side of the main road.

El Nido Travel Tips

El Nido town is all about relaxing and exploring its surroundings with El Nido Island hopping tours . The town itself is not that exciting but has been developing rapidly over the last few years. It owns a handful of good restaurants, it is safe, and there is no risk of Malaria.

things to do el nido puppy

ATM El Nido has one large ATM, the BPI Bank , in the center of town. A few smaller ones are pretty much always empty. Take enough cash.

Motorbike Rental The best way to explore El Nido is by motorbike. The tricycles overcharge big time, so spending 350 – 500 PHP (6-9 USD) on a motorbike is a very good deal. We rented ours at Bella’s rental and can highly recommend them.

WiFi Posting Instagram Stories of your beautiful trip to El Nido is quite the task. There are some cafes and hotels that offer a steady WiFi connection, but be prepared and get a SIM card instead.

Environmental El Nido is trying its absolute best to reduce the impact on the environment. It is not allowed to smoke on the streets nor on the island hopping tours, and they completely banned single-use plastic.

Read more about it in their sustainable tourism magazine .

Water in El Nido Good to notice is the area seems to have an ongoing freshwater problem. Numerous people have an upset stomach because food gets cooked in tap water, which is not clean enough. Please always check TripAdvisor reviews and avoid the risk.

Restaurants

Amidst the island’s lush scenery, you’ll find an array of fresh seafood and delicious Filipino classics. Some of our favorite restaurants were:

  • Boodle fight ♥️♥️♥️♥️
  • Art Cafe ♥️♥️♥️♥️
  • Bella Vita ♥️♥️♥️

Loving your blog! I’m planning on going to the Philippines for my honeymoon in October. Do you think it’s a good time to go? We would go around mid October. I’ve been getting mixed reviews online about the weather in October.

Thank you! October is right on the end of Typhoon season so you should expect a bit of mixed weather. End of October or early November would be a better if that’s an option for you. Have the best time!

Big Lagoon - Best Things to Do in El Nido Palawan

If you like traveling to places where you can party like it’s the city but also enjoy the freshest of air, the most serene waters, and the breathtaking backdrop of gray jagged-karst, then El Nido is the perfect spot for you. This international hub is tucked in the northernmost part of mainland Palawan, and one you shouldn’t miss when you visit the Philippines.

To get there, fly to Puerto Princesa , Palawan then take a 4-5 hour car ride to El Nido. The road takes on multiple curves so if you’re prone to motion sickness, make sure to take your medication, or book the only direct flight El Nido by AirSWIFT.

It is recommended you stay downtown where establishments are just a walking distance, especially the party hub, to make the most of your El Nido stay. Plus, the majestic and towering backdrop of the limestone cliffs makes your daily walks scenic. El Nido and the nearby attractions are open all year round but it’s best to visit during late November until May, with the peak travel season falling between the warm months of March and May.

WHAT'S IN THIS POST?

1. Explore Big Lagoon, Seven Commandos Beach, Secret Lagoon, and Shimizu Island (El Nido Tour A)

Tour A is the most popular of all EL Nido tours which consequently makes it the most crowded, but don’t let that get in the way of this fantastic experience. Here you will see Big Lagoon, Seven Commandos Beach, Secret Lagoon, and Shimizu Island.

The Big Lagoon is located east of Miniloc Island and you will need to rent a kayak to fully enjoy its ethereal beauty. This is one of the most iconic attractions in El Nido and honestly, there are absolutely not enough words to describe its beauty. This is also one of the most photographed locations in El Nido, Palawan. Don’t be shy, look it up online and you’ll understand why.

Seven Commandos Beach

The Seven Commandos Beach is lined with coconut and other trees, has a long stretch of sandy-coral beach, and, of course, pristine and calm waters. The place is packed with both tourists and locals either chilling, getting their tans, snorkeling, getting snacks, or even better – sharing a game or two of volleyball. The two rudimentary volleyball courts have been witness to many blossoming and sustained friendships in El Nido.

Secret Lagoon

Upon docking on the sand-coral beach, you’ll have to walk to the left side of the island. The Secret Lagoon is a pool of seafoam green water hidden inside the gigantic walls of calcareous cliffs. The place is enchanting with shallow water but tends to get murky as more people wade their way in.

Shimizu Island

The luscious green colors of trees pop out against the gray limestone, the turquoise waters, and the bright blue sky – Shimizu Island is the best place to chill and feast. The cliff and the trees also provide the needed shade while you sip on a coconut and cool down from the tropical sun.

2. Visit Snake Island and Entalula Island (El Nido Tour B)

The El Nido Tour B features six spots – Snake Island, Pinagbuyutan Island, Cudugnon Cave, Cathedral Cave, Entalula Beach, and Papaya Beach- two of which you shouldn’t dare miss.

Snake Island

The island is actually called Vigan Island but was locally nicknamed after its shape, especially with its sandbar resembling a long and winding tail. Snake Island is part of the Bacuit archipelago and on a fairly low tide, you can simply walk on the sandbar that connects it to mainland Palawan. You can even stop midway to swim and snorkel in turquoise waters, and of course, take as many photos as your heart can handle.

Snake Island - Best Things to Do in El Nido Palawan.jpg

Entalula Island

Entalula Beach is located north of El Nido. It has every island’s must-haves: a long white beach, a backdrop of jagged limestone, tropical vegetation, and of course, a calm and inviting sea full of life. Make sure you leave enough storage on your camera phones because this picturesque destination will keep you clicking away until it’s time to go.

3. Discover Helicopter Island, Secret Beach, Talisay Beach, and Star Beach (El Nido Tour C)

This is the longest tour out of the four, and it takes you the farthest from El Nido town. This also means you get to see some places less traveled including massive dinosaur-shaped islands and exotic limestone coves.

Helicopter Island

The Helicopter Island, also officially named Dilumacad Island, looks like the aerial transport that landed on water. Lay down your mat on the cream-colored beach and enjoy the seaside scenery, or dive into the colorful world of tropical fishes, corals, and other marine creatures – including some sea turtles.

Secret Beach

The beach is one of the inspirations for Alex Garland’s “The Beach”, along with the rest of the islands of Palawan. The Secret Beach is a secret paradise on the edge of Matinloc Island and is surrounded by towering and majestic jagged limestone, only accessible by a single and narrow crevice. You’ll have to swim through the narrow opening to reach the untouched beauty of this hypnotic island secret.

Talisay Beach

Talisay Beach is a picture-perfect sandy beach with playful waves. It’s a classic tropical swirl of blues, greens, yellows, and whites. It also has an abundant underwater ecosystem complete with colorful fishes and corals. It is one of the lesser-known beaches in Palawan, but no less beautiful than its more famous counterparts.

Star Beach is located in an urban area, surrounded by cliffs. It is a small and secluded coastline with crystal turquoise water and white sand. The place is great for snorkeling and swimming. This beach is open publicly and is usually crowded during peak seasons.

4. Explore Cadlao Island, Small Lagoon, Pasandigan Beach, and Natnat Beach (El Nido Tour D)

This Palawan tour is so underrated and even has fewer crowds than Tour C however it is as amazing as expected of the gorgeous El Nido. Take note though that due to the few people who take this tour, it may not always be offered so book it ahead of time, or you can opt to take a private boat tour. Here are the highlights of this tour:

Natnat Beach and Pasandigan Cove

Stroll, swim or simply sunbathe in these destinations of a wide stretch of powdery white sand meeting the emerald clear water against the iron-gray colored limestone. The rawness of their tropical vibe allows you to connect with the healing and calming beauty of nature. Here you can simply watch the waves and stare into the horizon.

Cadlao Lagoon

An adventure hub with a small beach space where you can laze around, serene waters for snorkeling and kayaking, and a limestone mountainside where you can rock climb. It’s only a 10-minute claim and not as hard as you think but you do need to be careful because the rocks can be sharp.

Small Lagoon

Compared to the Big Lagoon, the Small Lagoon is a bit hidden. It is a pool of turquoise blue water surrounded by El Nido’s signature jagged karst. The Small Lagoon is a great spot for cliff diving. Check with your tour guide to make sure that you’re jumping off and onto the right spots.

5. Get Panoramic View of Bacuit Bay From Taraw Cliff

El Nido’s signature sight is the backdrop of jagged limestone mountains over its town center. Humidity increases as you go up and there will be many vertical climbs but it’s worth it. The summit gives you a panoramic view of El Nido and Bacuit Bay and is best at sunrise.

It’s lined with coconut trees, food joints, luxury restaurants, and a few humble drinking bars so you can still have a little party at night. This must-see destination is a 30-45 minute drive from the town of El Nido and it can get a bit bumpy and dusty. Knock yourself out on the crystal clear turquoise water and the perfect ethereal tropical view. Aside from swimming, visitors can also go surfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle-boarding.

7. Enjoy Sunset View at Las Cabañas Beach

A perfect view of the sun setting behind the jagged karst mountains of Palawan. Las Cabañas Beach has a strip of bars and restaurants that are a perfect place for a relaxed dinner and drinks with families and friends. Did we mention they have a zip line for a bit of adventure too?

8. Visit Lio Beach

This beach is so underrated even when it’s only a 15-minute drive from the town of El Nido. Lio Beach is a long stretch of white sand with crystal-clear turquoise waters lined with luscious coconuts and trees. They also have a wooden boardwalk and pier where you can take exquisite photos of the sunset. There are food stalls and restaurants, clothing and lifestyle shops, and a few drinking joints but somehow Lio Beach has kept its exotic and secluded feel. There is absolutely no reason to miss this paradise.

9. Enjoy Bustling El Nido Nightlife

The nightlife in El Nido, though not as bustling as the one in Boracay, boasts of life and the opportunity to build friendships. The bars and restaurants offer a wide variety of both local tastes and international cuisines and drinks – from Asian, Mediterranean, and American, to European gastronomical experiences. The bars and some restaurants even offer free live bands who take on requests on top of their standard sets.

As part of the famous Filipino culture, expect KTV bars too, with a little bit of disco. For a more familiar international feel, there are also sports bars and dance bars with local and international DJs, shisha sets, and pool tables.

10. Chase Waterfalls in El Nido

Chasing waterfalls in El Nido might not be as famous as its marine tourism but this island has three waterfalls of different shapes and sizes, all with equally captivating beauty.

Nagkalit-kalit Waterfalls

On your way to Nacpan Beach, you’ll see signs for the Nagkalit-kalit waterfalls – an easy hour activity to add to your day trip. The trail changes depending on the season: summer gives you clear shallow streams with dry lands, while rainy seasons give you mud and knee-deep waters.  The waterfall itself rests on a gray deburred rock wall with enough depth for cliff-diving.

Bulalacao Waterfalls

The Bulalacao Waterfalls is divided into two: the Small Bulalacao Waterfalls can be reached in an hour or less, but if you want the full experience, then opt for the Big Bulalacao Falls which is 70 feet high. This is an advanced trail with, at most, 2 hours hike through a virgin forest so bring snacks and water.

Kuyawyaw Waterfalls

Kuyawyaw Waterfalls is actually not in El Nido, this series of waterfalls is located in the neighboring town of Taytay, about an hour away. The hike goes through a luscious forest with three main stops all with waterfalls dropping into powdery-turquoise pools.

Your Ultimate El Nido Travel Guide

These are only 10 things you can do in El Nido, but as we’ve said before, there’s still so much this paradise could offer. El Nido is an island of great adventures and an even greater paradise. From the picturesque landscapes to the underwater wonder, the welcoming people, and its melting pot of sounds and flavors – El Nido has got it all for you.

El Nido is a stunning destination located on the northernmost part of Palawan Island, known for its eco-friendly practices and breathtaking natural beauty. Its pristine beaches, coral reefs, lagoons, and limestone cliffs make it a must-visit for travelers seeking adventure and relaxation.

Composed of 45 islands and islets, each with unique geological formations, El Nido’s Bacuit Bay has been declared the “ Best Beach and Island Destination ” in the Philippines for its extraordinary natural splendor and ecosystem. The marine ecosystem is the main attraction, captivating divers, snorkelers, and beach-goers alike.

What to See in El Nido:

stunning Lagoon in El Nido Palawan, Philippines

Bacuit Bay is a stunning archipelago consisting of 45 islands and islets , most of which are uninhabited. The towering limestone islands can reach up to three stories high, while the larger islands feature majestic stretches of white sand against the bay’s crystal-clear waters. Tourists can explore beaches that are partially concealed by limestone caves, as well as secret beaches that are accessible only by swimming through small crevices.

The pristine blue waters of Bacuit Bay serve as a sanctuary for a diverse array of marine life, including dugongs, turtles, manta rays, various fish species, coral reefs, and the occasional white shark. With 30 dive sites in the bay, ranging in depth from six to over thirty meters, visitors can discover an underwater paradise teeming with vibrant sea life.

Moreover, the other islands located in Bacuit Bay boast scenic lagoons and caves waiting to be explored. With so many islands to visit, tourists in El Nido often find it challenging to decide which island to explore first.

To make the most out of Bacuit Bay, visitors can engage in a variety of activities such as island hopping, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving. It is recommended to stay for at least 3-4 days to fully immerse oneself in the beauty of the archipelago. To ensure a hassle-free experience, it is suggested to book our Tour Package El Nido Beach Break 4 days/3 nights .

Islands and beaches of Bacuit Bay

Matinloc Island, Bacuit Bay, El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

Matinloc Island

Matinloc Island is an incredibly scenic island in the Bacuit Bay archipelago, boasting dramatic limestone cliffs and soft white sand. It is not just a pretty island, but also a great spot for snorkeling and diving thanks to its abundant marine fauna and vast coral gardens. The island’s name comes from the Cuyunin word “ Matinlo ,” which means beautiful, and it certainly lives up to its name.

This heart-shaped island is home to fascinating beaches, abandoned mansions, and even a shrine built in 1982 in honor of the Virgin Mary. There is also a small museum on the island that displays old photos about its history. The abandoned mansion’s reason is unknown, but there are many speculations that the island is cursed, haunted, or that the owner disappeared with the island’s hidden treasure.

While most visitors come to see the breathtaking view of the Tapiutan Strait , the island is also a spiritual destination for many. The most stunning view of the Tapiutan Strait can be seen by climbing a steep limestone cliff using a stair-like path, but visitors should take caution while climbing to avoid injury.

Along with neighboring Tapiutan Island, Matinloc Island forms the narrow Tapiutan Strait, whose walls offer some of the best snorkeling in El Nido.

Matinloc Island is a great spot for island hopping, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving. While a visit can take as little as an hour, it’s recommended to stay longer to fully appreciate the island’s beauty. Accommodations are available at the Matinloc Island Resort , and the recommended tour is El Nido Tour C .

Aerial View Secret Beach Bacuit bay, El Nido. Palawan,

Secret Beach

Located near the Matinloc Shrine, the Secret Beach is considered one of the most stunning beaches in the Bacuit Bay archipelago. Accessing the beach is an adventure in itself as visitors need to jump off the boat and swim through a hole in the limestone cliff to reach the pocket of white sand and emerald waters encircled by craggy limestone formations.

The Secret Beach is believed to be the inspiration behind author Alex Garland’s novel “ The Beach ,” which was adapted into a movie shot in Maya Bay, Thailand, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. While it may not be the easiest beach to reach, the breathtaking scenery is worth the effort.

Visitors are rewarded with a secluded oasis surrounded by towering cliffs that create a sense of privacy and exclusivity. The clear blue-green waters provide the perfect opportunity for snorkeling and swimming, and the powdery white sand offers a comfortable spot to relax and soak up the sun.

While the Secret Beach can be challenging to access, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in the archipelago. It is recommended to join El Nido Tour C to visit the beach and other nearby attractions.

Hidden Beach in El Nido Palawan, Bacuit Bay Philippines

Hidden Beach

El Nido has a plethora of beautiful beaches, but few compare to the breathtaking Hidden Beach.

Located on Matinloc Island, this small, idyllic cove is tucked away behind towering limestone cliffs, hidden from the open sea. The powder-white sands and crystal-clear waters make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring El Nido.

The Hidden Beach is a peaceful sanctuary where visitors can relax and enjoy the serene surroundings. The beach is only accessible by swimming a short distance as it is too rocky to get closer by boat. However, the effort is well worth it, as once you arrive, you will be captivated by the stunning scenery and tranquil atmosphere of this hidden gem. Due to its small size, the beach can get crowded during peak periods, so it is recommended to visit early in the day or during off-peak season.

If you are staying at one of the island resorts in Bacuit Bay, you can easily plan your visit to the beach by arriving early or booking a private boat. This way, you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the beach at your leisure.

If you’re planning a trip to El Nido, be sure to include a visit to the Hidden Beach on your itinerary. Book online El Nido Tour C

El Nido Island Hopping with Snake Island

Snake Island

Snake Island in El Nido is a beautiful sandbar with an S-shaped curve that connects the island to the mainland of Palawan. During low tide, visitors can walk across the sandbar and enjoy the stunning views of the clear blue waters on both sides.

Walking across the sandbar is an unforgettable experience that shouldn’t be missed. You can also enjoy swimming in the shallow waters on both sides of the sandbar, or hike up to the island’s viewpoint for breathtaking panoramic views of the winding sandbar.

It’s recommended to wear aqua shoes or flip-flops when walking on the sandbar to avoid stepping on stonefish that are present in the area. The island is part of the Bacuit Bay and is included in the El Nido Tour B itinerary.

A tranquil spot for kayaking in El Nido

Pangulasian Island

Pangulasian Island, also known as the “ Island of the Sun ,” is a hidden oasis of luxury and tranquility in El Nido. With its exclusive villas, fine white sand beaches, and calm turquoise waters, this island is the perfect escape from the crowded beaches of the mainland.

The island is home to one of the most luxurious resorts in El Nido: the Pangulasian Island El Nido Resorts , where discerning guests can experience the ultimate in luxury and relaxation.

During your stay, indulge in island-hopping, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving. With its abundant marine life and colorful coral gardens, Pangulasian Island is a paradise for water enthusiasts.

If you’re looking for a truly indulgent and unforgettable vacation, book the El Nido Luxury Escape tour and discover the magic of Pangulasian Island.

Aerial View of Miniloc Island Resort in El Nido

Miniloc Island

Miniloc Island is a popular destination in the El Nido archipelago, famous for its stunning Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon , which attract visitors from all over the world.

Located in the heart of Bacuit Bay, Miniloc Island boasts a rugged coastline dotted with secluded coves and pristine white sand beaches. The island is also home to the charming Miniloc Island Resort, an eco-friendly accommodation that offers native-style cottages with thatched roofs and over-water bungalows.

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Miniloc Island Resort is the opportunity to kayak in the Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon in the early morning, before the crowds arrive.

Apart from kayaking, there are plenty of activities to keep visitors entertained, including island hopping, snorkeling, and diving.

If you’re planning a trip to El Nido, don’t miss the chance to explore the hidden gem that is Miniloc Island. We recommend taking the El Nido Tour A to experience all that this enchanting island has to offer.

Day trip to El Nido's Big Lagoon

Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon

The Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon are two stunning attractions located in Miniloc Island, El Nido. These lagoons are surrounded by towering limestone cliffs that create a mystical atmosphere and make for an unforgettable sightseeing experience.

The Big Lagoon is a vast expanse of crystal-clear blue water, enclosed by dramatic cliffs on both sides. Many visitors describe it as a surreal and dreamlike place, with the limestone formations resembling a labyrinth. On the other hand, the Small Lagoon is accessible only through a small gap between two giant limestone rocks, and it is a perfect spot for swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Both lagoons are a must-visit when in El Nido, and they are accessible through El Nido Tour A and El Nido Tour D . Don’t miss the chance to explore these natural wonders and immerse yourself in their beauty.

El Nido Island Hopping with Helicopter Island

Helicopter Island

Helicopter Island, also known as Dilumacad Island, is a stunning island located in Bacuit Bay. Its towering cliffs, covered in lush vegetation, and pristine beaches make it one of the most picturesque islands in El Nido. The island is named after its limestone cliffs, which resemble the shape of a helicopter when viewed from a distance, though some visitors find it hard to see the resemblance.

Helicopter Island is an excellent destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, with plenty of underwater tunnels and diverse marine life. The island is also a great place to relax and unwind, with its 300-meter stretch of beach perfect for a picnic lunch or sunbathing.

The massive cliff on one side of the island not only provides an excellent shade but also makes for the perfect backdrop for your photos. Make sure to add Helicopter Island to your itinerary when you book El Nido Tour C .

Day trip to El Nido's Shimizu Island

Shimizu Island

Located in the stunning Bacuit Bay, Shimizu Island is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a slice of paradise. With its soft, white sandy beaches and sparkling blue waters, this island offers a breathtaking experience.

Snorkelers and scuba divers will be delighted with the abundance of underwater life that thrives in this area, making it one of the top destinations for underwater exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a novice snorkeler, Shimizu Island promises an unforgettable experience.

Aside from its underwater wonders, Shimizu Island is also the perfect spot for a picnic and a photo shoot. The stunning scenery and tranquil atmosphere provide an ideal backdrop for your pictures, while the island’s lush greenery and natural beauty make it an excellent location for a relaxing day out.

Interestingly, Shimizu Island was named after a Japanese diver who tragically lost his life during an underwater cave exploration in one of the island’s tunnels.

To fully appreciate the beauty of Shimizu Island, we recommend spending at least an hour exploring its wonders. To make the most of your trip, we suggest booking El Nido Tour A , which includes a visit to this breathtaking island.

Aerial View of Seven Commandos Beach, El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

Seven Commandos Beach

This stunning beach boasts a beautiful, palm-fringed shoreline that merges seamlessly with crystal-clear waters, making it the perfect destination for anyone seeking a quintessential island getaway.

Although located on the El Nido mainland, the beach is only accessible by boat due to the mountainous terrain that surrounds it. It’s recommended to visit Seven Commandos Beach as part of the El Nido Tour A , which includes a day trip to this stunning location. However, to fully appreciate the beauty of the beach, we suggest spending a couple of days here at the Vellago Resort , an exclusive boutique resort located on Seven Commandos Beach. The resort has only five rooms, each offering a stunning view from the balcony.

Interestingly, Seven Commandos Beach was named after a stranded fishing vessel that was repaired and left the beach. The locals discovered a huge stone engraved with the words “7 Commandos” and believed it to be the name of the vessel.

El Nido Island Hopping with Cathedral Cave

Cathedral Cave

El Nido boasts not only beautiful beaches and lagoons, but also a network of stunning caves that are often overlooked by visitors. One of the most breathtaking caves is Cathedral Cave, located just a boat-ride away from El Nido town on Pinasil Island.

Although it may not look impressive from afar, Cathedral Cave’s sheer size will leave you in awe. The cavern has an opening higher than the famous Underground River, and the dark interior is adorned with spectacular rock formations that resemble a cathedral’s high ceilings.

As you explore the cave’s interior, you’ll be mesmerized by the crystal-clear emerald waters. However, swimming inside the cave is not recommended due to the presence of venomous sea snakes.

We suggest booking El Nido Tour B to include this stunning cave in your itinerary.

Beach area at Lagen Island El Nido Resort

Lagen Island

Lagen Island Resort is the ultimate private island getaway , ideal for those looking for an exclusive and relaxing vacation in El Nido. The resort is situated on a serene lagoon, surrounded by a lush four-hectare forest and majestic limestone cliffs.

This idyllic location is not only a natural wonder, but also a sanctuary for a diverse range of birds and mammals, making it perfect for eco-trips and birdwatching tours. For the adventurous, Lagen Island Resort offers activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and exploring caves and marine treasures.

The resort’s 50 charming cottages are located in peaceful areas, each with its own private veranda. You’ll wake up each morning to the sounds of nature and breathtaking views of the surroundings.

To fully experience the beauty of Lagen Island Resort and its surroundings, we recommend staying for 3-4 days. Activities such as island hopping, diving, and more can also be arranged through the resort.

Make the most of your El Nido vacation by booking a stay at Lagen Island Resort , where you’ll be treated to an exclusive and unforgettable island getaway.

Aerial view ANGKLA Beach Club & Boutique Resort

Nacpan Beach

Nacpan Beach is truly one of the most breathtaking beaches in the Philippines . Situated to the north of El Nido town proper, this stunning beach boasts pristine, powdery sand and coconut tree-lined shores, perfect for swimming in the crystal-clear waters or simply soaking up the sun. A visit to Nacpan Beach is an absolute must when in El Nido.

At the southwest tip of Nacpan Beach, you’ll find the smaller twin-Calitang Beach. The most picturesque spot to take in the panoramic views of the two beaches is atop the small hill where they meet.

To fully experience the beauty of Nacpan Beach, we recommend taking El Nido Tour E or staying overnight at a luxury resort in the area. This will give you ample time to soak up the stunning scenery and truly unwind in this tropical paradise.

Sunset view of Bacuit Bay El Nido

Las Cabanas and Corong Corong

Las Cabanas Beach and Corong Corong Beach are two popular destinations located just a few kilometers outside of El Nido town in Palawan, Philippines. These stunning beaches are known for their spectacular sunset views .

Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Las Cabanas Beach, such as swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water sports. Adventurous visitors can even try their hand at ziplining, as there is a zipline that runs across the beach to nearby Depeldet Island.

Las Cabanas Beach has a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, with plenty of beachside bars and restaurants where visitors can enjoy delicious food and drinks while taking in the beautiful scenery. The beach can get crowded during peak season, so it is recommended to arrive early in the day to secure a good spot.

Information about El Nido

Woman sits on boat in El Nido

El Nido is a municipality on the northernmost tip of the province of Palawan, characterized by awe-inspiring natural beauty, from dazzling lagoons, white sand beaches, rocky islets, and towering limestone cliffs to glasslike waters teeming with abundant marine life. No wonder El Nido has earned nothing but praise from visitors and numerous accolades for being one the best island and beach destinations in the world.

El Nido encompasses over 40 islands peppered across the Bacuit Archipelago, each with its own unique geological wonders but the same natural majesty. Its surrounding waters are a stunning mix of blue-green colors, its palm-fringed beach pockets have powdery sands, and its marine-protected areas offer some of the best diving experiences in the entire Philippines.

Despite being a first-class municipality, the town still has a sleepy and laid-back atmosphere. But El Nido has also seen a rise of numerous establishments over the years, accommodating record-high tourist arrivals in the area of about 150,000 in a year. Accommodations here range from budget-friendly hostels and homestays and mid-range beachfront hotels to luxurious and exclusive resorts.

Puerto Princesa serves as the gateway to El Nido, and together with Coron, these three areas are the most-visited in Palawan.

Best time to visit

Exploring the tourist spots in El Nido is mostly done outdoors, so weather conditions are the primary considerations in planning when to visit the town and its surrounding islands.

Cheapest time to visit El Nido

The low season for travel in El Nido is pretty much the same with the rest of the Philippines, during the wet months of June to October. Rains are to be expected this time, but also cheap flight tickets and low hotel prices.

Weather in El Nido

El Nido experiences two seasons. Dry months are from January to May, while the wet season starts from June until the end of the year.

Peak season in El Nido

Because it is primarily an island and beach destination, El Nido sees large tourist crowds during the peak summer months of March, April, and May. It will be generally sunny and dry during these times, with very little chance of rain.

How to get to El Nido

There are two main ways to get to El Nido. The most popular and more affordable route is taking a flight from Manila, Clark, or Cebu to Puerto Princesa, the capital city of Palawan. From here, visitors will need to take a bus or van going to El Nido. Vans will take less time to reach El Nido compared to buses.

The second option is to fly directly from Manila to El Nido, with only AirSwift servicing this route and landing at the Lio Airport.

If you are coming from the neighboring Coron, there is a fast craft going to El Nido. The boat trip leaves Coron at noon, arriving in El Nido after almost 4 hours. Currently, there are no direct flights from the Busuanga Airport in Coron going to El Nido.

Those who are in San Vicente, a rising travel destination in Palawan, may take a 2.5-hour van ride to El Nido. There are direct flights from Manila to San Vicente, currently serviced by SkyJet and Philippine Airlines.

Safety in El Nido

El Nido is a very small town with a tranquil and laid-back atmosphere, and it is deemed very safe to be traveling around here. The locals are warm, welcoming, and accustomed to travelers coming from different parts of the country and around the world.

Visitors are always encouraged to be respectful to locals, be mindful of their belongings, and never leave any trash behind, especially when visiting its main tourist attractions.

Getting around El Nido

The main town of El Nido is very small, and its streets are not as busy compared to other tourist destinations in the country. The main modes of transportation are tricycles and motorcycles.

Motorcycle taxis, locally known as habal-habal, are very popular for tourists because getting from one place to another will be much faster. You will see these parked at the town proper or driving around looking for passengers, so they are pretty easy to spot. These can be hired for just one drop-off or a tour around town the whole day.

If you are visiting El Nido as a small group, it is best to hail a tricycle or auto-rickshaw, as this can accommodate up to four passengers. These are also easy to spot around town.

Those who know how to drive a motorcycle may save a lot by hiring one for the whole day or the entire duration of their stay. This is a great option for solo travelers or pairs.

There are four tours in El Nido, Tours A, B, C, and D, and all of them require boat trips. The best thing about these tours is that they are all regulated and standardized.

Food and Drinks

There are quite a number of dining and drinking options in El Nido , including iconic restaurants and cafés that you should not miss. The town has preserved its laid-back vibe, so heavy partying is not to be expected here.

One delicacy that El Nido is famous for is its bird’s nest soup. In fact, the name El Nido translates to “the nest” in English. This is made of the Balinsasayaw bird’s saliva that they form into birthing and breeding nests, found in crevices of El Nido’s limestone karsts. Because of how difficult it is to harvest, the delicacy is on the expensive side.

As with the rest of the Philippines, tipping is not mandatory in El Nido. Most establishments would already include a service charge, but gratuities are still highly appreciated by service crews.

Best Restaurants

Most dining establishments are concentrated in the town proper and by the main El Nido bay. They range from small, local eateries to mid-range restaurants serving international cuisine. Some of the go-to establishments in El Nido include El Nido Boutique and Art Café, Squidos Sports Bar, and Trattoria Altrove. Expect to sample fresh seafood, pizzas, and local beers in these places.

The party scene in El Nido is on the calm and quieter side, which best compliments the natural charm and small-town atmosphere here. Nightlife mostly begins with happy hour sessions watching the glorious sunset from the bay. Most drinking establishments are also found in the main town and bay. Head to Pukka Bar for a good dance after drinks.

Drinking in public

There is a nationwide ban on drinking in public, so it is best to enjoy your beers or cocktails inside restaurants, bars, or your accommodations (in accordance with their own rules). This goes for cigarette smoking as well.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay in El Nido

For sightseeing.

Most of the attractions in El Nido are not within the town but on its islands and islets dotting the Bacuit Bay. But from the main town, you will still see breathtaking views of the beach, the neighboring islands, and towering limestone cliffs.

Corong-Corong, located near Marimegmeg Beach, offers a more tranquil spot with great views of the sunset.

For Shopping

Stay within the town proper to access small boutiques and souvenir shops, local sundry shops, and small convenience stores.

For Entertainment & Arts

Most hotels, restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops are concentrated in the main town, so staying within this area is a great and convenient option.

El Nido, Palawan: Tourist Spots, Food, Tours & Itinerary

 alt=

I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging but it’s not me , it’s the biggest media and travel sites that declared El Nido as one of the best island and beach destinations in the world.  And there are still a lot of raves and accolades, but the list might not be enough.

What I am trying to say is, if you’re planning to visit the Philippines, don’t forget about El Nido. For Filipino travelers, El Nido should be the ultimate destination in your bucket list!

El Nido Hotel Ocean Vista Inn

The Story of El Nido

Formerly known as Bacuit, the town was renamed El Nido in 1954, a name that derives from swiftlets’ nests found in the crevices of limestone cliff.

But its splendor has long been hidden to the world until a sea accident happened in 1979 that led to its discovery. Now, El Nido is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Philippines known for its wonder of nature.

How to get to El Nido

The best way to go to El Nido from Manila is via Puerto Princesa. Book a flight, and once you’re at the Puerto Princesa Airport, there are vans that offer direct travel to El Nido. We were able to get the service of Eulene Joy van for only 450Php per person. Travel time is 6 hours. We were there last November so it was off-peak season, that’s why I think we were able to get that price.

But usually the fare is about 550 Php to 600 Php base on van services like Lexus Van and also Day Tripper Vans.

READ THE BLOG POST: 15 Best Resorts in El Nido

If you are the adventurous type and you want longer travel and waiting time, you can try traveling by bus. Outside the airport, you can hail a tricycle to take you to the terminal for about 150 Php.

Also,  for an affordable 8 Php fare, tell the driver to drop you off at Junction 1, and from there ride a multi-cab going to the bus terminal named as  San Jose Bus Terminal for 13 Php each. The fare is cheaper with buses at about 380 Php for ordinary and 480 Php for Aircon. Bus companies are Cherry Bus and Roro Bus.

By Direct Flight via AirSwift

This is the only one airline that flies from Manila to Lio Airport El Nido, it’s Airswift! It’s easier access I know, but with the price of about 7,000 Php, not recommended for budget travelers Haha!

Tourist Spots in El Nido

It was fun roaming around the town, eating at restaurants and carinderias and also meeting new friends in El Nido, but definitely the best thing to do in El Nido is to try the island hopping tours.

El Nido offers 4 island hopping tours or packaged tours namely tours A, B, C and D which has its own unique beauty to boast. Tour A is all about Lagoons! For Tour B, it’s the caves. Beaches are the hottest attractions in Tour C. While for Tour D it’s the islands of Cadlao.

Here are the attractions from each Island Hopping Tour. During our 4 Days Travel to El Nido, we were able to experience Tours A and C, which are also the most popular.

Like I said Tour A is all about adventures while exploring the secret and hidden lagoons of El Nido. It was 8AM when we met with the tour organizer, Northern Hope Tours, together with the other tourists near the port to start our awesome island hopping experience. Here are the attractions we visited.

7 Commandos Beach

Though tour A is known for Lagoons, our fist stop is actually an Island, a beach. It was a good way to start our tour, like a prologue to an awesome adventure in the paradise of El Nido.   ( READ STORY:  7 Commandos Beach of El Nido, Palawan )

Big Lagoon El Nido Palawan

The entrance to the Big Lagoon was definitely a sight to behold. Those towering cliffs with green vegetation surrounding the crystal clear water. One of the most picturesque places in the tour.  ( READ STORY:  Big Lagoon of El Nido: Just like a Fantasy Movie )

Coined as the favorite island of the boatmen. Haha they were the one who told me that. Well, obviously because this is where we had our lunch. The food was delicious, with all those grilled fishes and liempo with ensalada, veggies and fruits! Aside from the food, Shimizu island has a charm of its own.

Helicopter Island El Nido Palawan

We started off the tour at Helicopter Island. The name of this island is pretty obvious, it’s because ot looks like a helicopter, especially from afar while you’re on a boat going to the island. But aside from that it’s limestone cliffs, fine beaches and underwater world will surely captivate you.

Aside from Island Hopping Tours, El Nido is filled with more stunning beaches, waterfalls and other attractions. That’s why there’s the Tour E or the Land Tour. You can avail this through the tricycle drivers or even tour operators in town. Don’t worry there are tons of tour operators there. When you avail the land tour, here are the destinations to expect.

  • Las Cabanas and Marimegmeg Beach
  • Nagkalit-kalit waterfalls
  • Nacpan and Calitang Twin Beach
  • Kuyawayaw waterfalls
  • Mt. Manslawit
  • Bulalacao waterfalls

El Nido Tours Prices

This summarizes the price of each island hopping tour in El Nido. All island hopping tours include buffet lunch and snorkeling gear. Prices may vary by tour agency, but this is the standard one imposed by the local government.

  • Island Hopping Tour A – 1,200 Php (24 USD)
  • Island Hopping Tour B – 1,300 Php (26 USD)

There are a lot of restaurants and karinderia (eatery) in El Nido that offer Filipino and international cuisines. But the standout for me because of its afforadable and quality of food is IBR Fast Food . Their serving is generous in affordable prices. If you’re on the budget and still wants to eat something delicious, go for IBR. It’s just near the beach located at the center of the town. For more restaurants in El Nido, check this article.
