Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line fleet

Margaritaville islander, margaritaville paradise, review of bahamas paradise cruise line.

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (bahamasparadisecruise.com) is a brand owned by the Bahamas-based company "Paradise Cruise Line Operator Ltd", that changed ownership on December 22, 2016. Among the new company's owners is Kevin Sheehan - former CEO and President of NCLH ("Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings"), who resigned NCL in January 2015. The company's current CCO (since 2021) is Francis Riley (former employee of Thomas Cook UK, British Airways' Avios Group Ltd, NCL-Norwegian , Tourico Holidays, EMEA Recruitment, Traveltek). In 2019, Riley joined Bahamas Paradise as Senior VP of Sales. The company's CEO (and co-owner) is Oneil Khosa (former Royal Caribbean employee/first officer, founder of "Blue World Voyages"/India, investment banker).

In August 2016, Kevin Sheehan became CEO and President of the Las Vegas-based Scientific Games Corporation (a leading developer of technology products and services for the worldwide gaming and lottery industries). The cruise company's other owner (with 50% stake) is Oneil Khosa (India-based "Blue Ocean Cruises" company's CEO and Managing Director). Until 2014, Blue Ocean operated short breaks (1-, 2- and 4-night itineraries) leaving from Mumbai-Bombay and Mormugao-Goa .

In mid-November 2020 was unofficially announced that the ship Grand Celebration had been sold for scrap metal (for an undisclosed sale price). The vessel left Freeport Bahamas on November 15th, allegedly heading to India's Alang Shipbreaking Yard (world's largest), with estimated arrival on January 3rd, 2021. On January 2nd, the 34-year-old liner arrived and anchored off Alang, and on January 14th was beached for scrapping.

As the only cruise shipping company operating roundtrips out of Palm Beach Florida , Bahamas Paradise provides its customers with expedited boarding (30-min embarkation/disembarkation) and valet parking (at the cruise terminal).

  • Cruise passengers are also offered Bahamas "cruise and hotel" packages in Bahamian hotels. These deals offer 2-, 4-, and 6-night Bahamas hotel stays to be combined (booked together) with Palm Beach roundtrip voyages.
  • MS Grand Celebration ship is a former Carnival Cruise Lines vessel and operated under charter (leased), while the fleet-mate MS Grand Classica (former Costa neoClassica is fully-owned. Classica was purchased in December 2017 and entered service in April 2018.
  • In 2017, the company had booked around 250,000 passengers, around half of whom were from South Florida.
  • MS Grand Classica was opened for booking in February 2018. The company's promos were "Buy One - Get One Free". These free cruise deals were limited to 1 week only, and bookable on both liners.
  • "Sail Away Your Way" promo deals offered free cruising for kids 12-year-old and under (when traveling with 2 full-paying guests) and free entertainment for adults. The promo offer was valid for cruises through February 12, 2019, if these deals were booked by December 12, 2018. USD 25 pp bonuses were additionally offered as either casino credit, spa credit, photo credit or onboard credit (to be used for drinks, dining or shore excursions).

The regularly scheduled Florida-Bahamas short-breaks are very popular among both American and Bahamian citizens as they provide a cheap shopping travel alternative. Bahamas Paradise estimated that these tourists spend ~USD 4,5 million annually.

Port West Palm Beach (Florida) cruise port

From both ships, Port Palm Beach projected between USD 54-63 million in net income over a period of 10 years (2018-2028), depending on the handled passengers' number. The liners' combined passenger capacity is nearly 1,3 million per year. The company's monthly dockage fees (for both ships) are USD 50,000.

In early-February 2019, the company started offering (upon request) 6 new themed-food menus (2x Chinese, 2x Indian, 2x Vegan cuisine specialties) available for groups fleetwide and year-round. The new Chinese menus include Sichuan Eggplant, Hunan Style Crispy Whole Red Snapper, Crispy Tangerine Beef. Vegan dishes include Coconut Soup, Crispy Hearts of Palm Cakes, Caramelized Parsnip, Zucchini Lasagna, Potato-Mushroom Burgers. Indian dishes include Tandoori Chicken, Pan-seared Prawns, Paneer Tikki Masala, Kheer and Warm Gajar Halwa (pudding). The new menus are also available for individual request (must be made in advance upon booking or onboard / at ship's Reception).

Margaritaville At Sea

In early-December 2021 was announced that Margaritaville Resorts & Hotels (Florida-based hospitality group) signed a partnership deal with the shipowner Paradise Cruise Line Operator Ltd to start a new cruise brand (Margaritaville at Sea) to be inaugurated with Grand Classica in 2022. The ship (renamed "Margaritaville Paradise") was scheduled to start service for "Margaritaville at Sea" with the Maiden Voyage on April 30, 2022, following an extensive wetdock refit at Grand Bahama Shipyard (Freeport).

  • The Margaritaville cruise line is expected to add more ships to its future fleet, with Margaritaville Paradise being the first one.
  • The deal was signed by John Cohlan (Margaritaville's CEO) and Oneil Khosa (Bahamas Paradise's CEO, who will also serve as Margaritaville Cruise Line's CEO).
  • Margaritaville Paradise continues the regular 2-night cruise schedule from Palm Beach to Freeport. The shipowner remains the same (Paradise Cruise Line Operator Ltd).
  • After supply chain disruptions affected the ship's wetdocking, Margaritaville at Sea brand's inauguration was postponed by two weeks (from April 30th to May 13th, 2022).

On October 16, 2023, Carnival Corporation (as shipowner) officially confirmed the sale of the 23-year-old Costa Atlantica (through its subsidiary Adora Cruises Ltd ) valued at USD 64,6 million (~EUR 61M). The new shipowner (yet to be revealed) will charter the vessel to Margaritaville at Sea/Bahamas Paradise which will operate it under the new name "Margaritaville at Sea Islander" ( Margaritaville Islander ).

On December 4, 2023, the company confirmed that Costa Atlantica officially joined the fleet (under the name "Margaritaville At Sea Islander") and is scheduled to start Caribbean voyages leaving roundtrip from Tampa Florida on June 14, 2024 (Maiden Voyage).

Also in June 2018, the company dropped its single supplements on all oceanview staterooms. No single supplement daily cruise rates start at USD 149 per person.

In September 2018, the company signed a partnership deal with Fit Bodies Inc, providing passengers aged 16 and older with free workout classes (Zumba, Yoga, and fitness) led by certified instructors. The new program was introduced on Grand Celebration (Sept 2018) and on Grand Classica (since January 2019).

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, Bahamas Paradise suspended its fleet's passenger shipping operations (both vessels) by canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures between March 15, 2020, and May 31, 2021.

Grand Classica ship was planned to restart mini-cruises to Grand Bahama Island (Freeport) on December 18, 2020. Grand Celebration ship was scheduled to restart voyages to Bahamas (Nassau) on March 3, 2021. However, these plans were canceled and both vessels remained out of service, and later Grand Celebration was scrapped .

Bahamas Paradise ships were intended to operate at 60% max passenger capacity , by closing two cabin decks on each liner. All affected bookings received a full (100%) monetary refund, including on prepurchased through the cruise company packages and services. A 125% refund in FCC (future cruise credit) was given with rebooking.

The company resumed the USA-Bahamas service on July 8, 2021, with Grand Classica.

Itinerary of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

In May 2018, Grand Classica (fka Costa neoClassica/now Margaritaville Paradise) joined MS Grand Celebration as the second ship in the fleet of the Florida-based company "Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line". At the end of August 2017, Port Palm Beach District Commission signed a 10-year agreement for the former Costa cruise ship, to service the Florida-Bahamas route West Palm Beach - Freeport .

Margaritaville Paradise has a regularly scheduled itinerary program of 3-day / 2-night Bahamas cruises to Freeport and back to Palm Beach FL.

On December 4, 2023, the company confirmed that the former Costa Atlantica (2000-built/23-year-old) officially joined the fleet (being chartered as "Margaritaville At Sea Islander"). Starting in June 2024 (inaugural cruise date June 14th), Margaritaville Islander is scheduled for Caribbean voyages leaving roundtrip from Tampa Florida . MAS Islander's itinerary program is based on year-round homeporting in Port Tampa Bay and 4-night and 5-night cruises visiting Key West (Florida) and Mexico's ports Cozumel  and  Progreso/Merida .

Grand Classica cruise ship (Costa neoClassica)

In 2017, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line signed with The Bahamas a 3-year deal (until 2020) to bring both vessels (Celebration and Classica) to Grand Bahama Island on 2-night itineraries. With both ships, the company now has an annual passenger shipping capacity of 0,5+ million.

Grand Celebration itinerary program was based on 2-night / 3-day Bahamas cruises leaving from Palm Beach (Riviera Beach) Florida . The ship offered mini-cruises to Bahamas ( Freeport ) 3 or 4 times a week. Sadly, in January 2021 the vessel was beached and scrapped at Alang India .

Since Hurricane Matthew (September-October 2016) damaged Freeport, the Grand Celebration was diverted to Bimini Islands but resumed calling on Freeport on January 3, 2017.

Port Palm Beach receives around USD 4 million a year from the ship in port fees and cruise parking. Port commissioners signed the agreement with the new shipowner (Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line) on December 15, 2016. With LOA length 223 m (733 ft), MS Grand Celebration is the max size the Palm Beach port can handle. The fleet-mate MS Grand Classica's length is 220 m (722 ft).

2-night / 3-day Bahamas cruise itinerary

  • Day 1 (embarkation at Port Palm Beach Florida USA) - check-in at 11 a.m., ship boarding at 12 noon. Passengers must be on the ship by 4 pm. Departure is at 5:30 pm.
  • Day 2 (Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas) - arrival in Freeport is at 8 am. Departure from Freeport is at 5 pm. Passengers must be back on the ship by 4:30 pm.
  • Day 3 (disembarkation in Port Palm Beach) - arrival back to port is at 7 am. Disembarkation of passengers is between 8-10:30 am.

Very concerned since this is how it starts - to be continued

This review is based solely on our booking experience for a trip upcoming in August 2018 that we haven't yet gone. As this begins, we booked our cruise and stay in mid April and we requested our "stay" be at the Pelican Bay. We were told it was not available but after my fiancé nudged a bit, they would see what they can do. After coming back on the the line, they went ahead and booked us for that hotel. We then waited the "said" timeline (about a week) for our confirmation email and after 2 weeks we then called to ask the progress of the booking. Now what begins this frustration was that my fiancé had to wait over an hour to get through customer service, just to be told they have to physically get a hold of the booking "concierge" for the hotel to confirm the hotel and they do not have it yet. What? 2 weeks later? Really? Ok, fine... We then wait again, another week. Still no confirmation email... Again, we call customer service. Yay! Only 40 minuted this time. Got through and was told same thing. They have not heard back from the hotel. What????? Freakin weird. Ok so now its onto week 4... WEEK 4!!!! We finally call again. This time its a 25 min wait too get through. We are told they have the incorrect email address on file. They take my fiancé's email address and proceed to send the confirmation. Well thankfully he refused to leave the conversation until he received it, because here's the best part!!!! They have us staying in a completely different hotel. He then tells the customer service rep there is a mistake on the hotel, they try to pull a fast one. You see, when they send confirmations, there is the cruise/hotel information contained in the email body itself AND they include a PDF attachment (which is the pertinent information in which you actually print). So they quickly change it on their end but only within the email body itself. Not changed on the actual confirmation which is the PDF attachment. Well my fiancé caught that. Freakin Sneaky... They assured him not to worry, it will be taken care of. At this point he is so frustrated and upset, however, in the concerted effort to not scream and cuss the poor customer service rep out, he just agrees to give it some time. After all at this point we aren't leaving for another few months. What's the harm. The harm I say... lol hm hm hmmm... we waited 3 weeks. Still, no email. We call. Another 30 min wait to get through. My fiancé is smart and simply says we are calling to confirm everything is in order. He asks what hotel they have us at. They say blah blah hotel. Ohhhhhhhh my god. NOT THE HOTEL WE BOOKED! So here we go AGAIN. They apologize and try to straighten it out. They then assure him they have it correct. We just need to confirm with the hotel. Let me ask you... the reader... what do you think they said next? You probably guessed it! Give us about a week for your confirmation email. Ughhhhhhhhhh! ..................3 weeks later. No email. My fiancé calls. 40 minutes in, now hearing "you are the now first in line and will be answered by the next available customer service representative'. So we then hear that they actually do have the correct hotel, but they still don't have confirmation from the hotel yet. What??? It's been 3 weeks. We wait. 2 more weeks. We call Got right through. Wowwwww! Not taking any chances to hear bull and to not waste stupid time going through hoops, this time my fiancé explains to them our "situation" and asks if no email, can they can confirm verbally at least. Now, if you (the reader) remember, the last actual email we received, the body of the email was changed, but the PDF (actual confirmation) was still incorrect. So the woman says she sees that... the hotel is the hotel we requested on their end, but is STILL incorrect in the PDF! She CLEARLY hears our frustration as my fiancé's voice gets a little louder... So we believe in the interest of trying to save themselves from further embarrassment by telling us what we believe is probably the truth (they are still waiting to hear from the hotel to confirm), She simply says "let me see what I can do". She comes back after a few minutes and says we are all set! She says she sent the email. My fiancé refuses to hang up until he gets it. She sends us an email (odd email because it's unlike any email received by them previously) confirming JUST the hotel. It was almost like she made it up right then. Well let me also add, in a few of these attempts, my fiancé gets smart and actually calls the hotel to see if they received our reservation. You can probably guess, that was also unsuccessful. I mention that because after hanging up with the cruise line, he calls the hotel to confirm on that end. No reservation... but, he asks again to look, but this time under my name. Weird... they have a reservation but for only ONE night! We call. They are looking into it... OMG And here we are... review! To be continued...

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line Review: Here is What I Loved

Ben Souza

I’ve heard a lot of different things about Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line but there is really only one way to truly find out what a cruise is all about.  You have to try it for yourself.   What was my experience like?  Here is what I loved about Grand Celebration and why I will be cruising again with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line again in the future.

Embarkation – Embarkation at the Port of Palm Beach was a total breeze.  They have a separate line for those with U.S. passports and it is much shorter than the line with guests cruising with birth certificates.   They also have a separate line at customs when you disembark so having a U.S. passport saves a lot of time from waiting in lines.

One thing I liked was after checking in, you can book shore excursions, dinner reservations, and drink packages right in the terminal while you wait for the ship to begin boarding. Not sure why other cruise lines don’t also do this.

Ship – Grand Celebration was originally built by Carnival Cruise Line and is the last Holiday class ship built by the cruise line. The ship went into service in 1987 but was recently refurbished after the vessel housed FEMA workers in St. Thomas this past fall.

For a 31 year old cruise ship, I was really impressed how clean and updated the ship was.  During my cruise, I posted dozens of videos and photos on Snapchat throughout each day of the ship.  I had a travel agent write to me saying how impressed they were with the ship after following along on my journey.  It far exceeded my expectations.

While the ship featured many modern touches, it still had the charm of an older cruise ship.  At 47,000 gross tons, you can easily navigate from one end of the ship to the other quickly.

I included a full video tour of the cruise ship farther down in this article.

Cabin – My ocean view cabin (E101) on deck 7 was larger than cabins I have been in on many of the mainstream cruise lines.  One nice surprise was the size of the shower.  I found it interesting that cruise lines built larger showers on cruise ships in 1987 than they do today.  The cabin had a flat screen TV, plenty of storage space, and one 110 power outlet by the desk.  You can view a short video tour of my cabin below.

My room steward did a tremendous job keeping my cabin clean with morning and evening service.  He also made towel animals and placed chocolate on the pillows each evening.  It was a nice little touch that I wasn’t expecting on a two night cruise.

Steakhouse/Seafood Restaurant (Admiral’s)  – I normally don’t go into much detail about food since it is so subjective.  However, I have to talk about my experience at Admiral’s on my last night of the cruise. I honestly had no idea what to expect but was pretty much blown away.

There is a $29 surcharge (plus gratuity) for the restaurant and I can honestly say it is worth every penny.  I love to try all of the steakhouses on cruise ships and this ranks up there with the best of them.

The service was incredible, my filet was cooked to perfection, and the coffee cheesecake was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had on a cruise.  I honestly can’t say enough good things about the restaurant.

Entertainment – For a small ship, I thought there was a good variety of entertainment and live music throughout the ship.  I’m really not a show person and rarely go to them while on a cruise, but I made an exception for this cruise since I’ve never cruised on this cruise line before.

The first night was a variety show that had a family friendly comedian, an illusionist, and your typical cruise production dance show. It was similar quality to what the mainstream cruise lines offer on their older ships.  The audience gave the production team a rousing ovation after the Riverdance portion of the show.

Around the ship at night, I came across the following live music:

  • 5 piece cover band
  • Tina Turner impersonator
  • Man playing the piano and singing
  • Saxophonist in one of the lounges
  • Karaoke on the pool deck at night

Odds and Ends

Grand Celebration offers two night cruises to Freeport, Bahamas from West Palm Beach.  However, the ship offers something that no one else does.  You can either take the two night cruise, or you can get off the ship when you reach the Bahamas and stay in a resort for a few nights.  Once your stay is done at the resort, you take a one night cruise back to West Palm Beach.

There were always loungers available around the ship. The Oasis is an adults only area in the front of the ship that was never more than half full and is the perfect place to kick back and relax.

The ship never seemed crowded and rarely if ever had to wait in line for anything.

The entire inside of the ship is smoke free.  Smoking sections are outside on the port side of the ship.  Since the casino is also part of a lounge and you have to walk through it to get from one end of the ship to the other, it’s really nice not having to deal with the stench that come with every other casino on cruise ships.

The value for the amount you pay for your cruise on Grand Celebration is hard to beat. It is perfect for short getaways, birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor/bachelorette parties etc.

Before my cruise, I had someone ask me if I had to attend a timeshare presentation once onboard.  Throughout my entire cruise, I didn’t see or hear one thing about timeshares, it was just like every other cruise I’ve taken (just shorter).

The buffet didn’t offer a large variety of items, but what they did offer was adequate for a two night cruise.  Dinner only had a few options (pizza, pasta etc) so you will want to eat in the main dining room or specialty restaurant at night.

There was an adult comedy show one night that had a $12 surcharge per person.  The same comedian gave a 10 minute family friendly show each night in the theater as part of the entertainment shows which had no charge.

When you do book a cruise on Grand Celebration, fill out all of the forms they send you before you arrive at the port.  This will help speed up the check-in process.

Overall, I had a great time on board and will gladly cruise again on Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line.

Cruise over all was moderately okay. Once 3rd day which is day off the boat the whole family which includes 18 month old and 10 year old ( this was her bday gift) got red little itchy, stinging bumps all over our back, legs, and arms. Went to family dr once back home in Atlanta and diagnosised Bed Bug Bites. Tried reaching over 5x now to manager Maria at the cruise line but she is always in a “meeting”.

I took this 3-day 2-night cruise with my mother and it was her first time cruising. We both had an amazing time the staff was outstanding the food was great. There was so much stuff to do on the ship you could never get bored. We will Cruise again with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line in the future. Without a doubt we will bring our friends and family and make it a big celebration.

Smoking sections are outside on the port side of the ship.

no smoking and no balconies? lol no thank you.

Love the smaller ships! This is much like the ship I took my first cruise on. I like roomier decks where I can watch the waves, read , and walk. This is a must try cruise line. Thanks for the excellent review!

So happy to see your review. We have been sailing with this Cruise Line since they had the Bahamas celebration ship and have always been very happy with the service and accommodations on board. We have made many friends among the staff they are extremely personable and efficient. We have intentions of continuing to cruise with this line, it’s a wonderful quick getaway!

Never heard of “surcharge” to see an on-board show before… I sure hope its NOT a new upcoming fleetwide cruise trend.. We cruise 4-5 times a year..

Cruise Ship Review: Grand Celebration

There’s much to celebrate now that the bahamas just got a little easier to experience..

By Rico Bronte

The ports of Fort Lauderdale and Miami have long been the gateways to cruising the Caribbean, but with the recent inaugural sailing of Grand Celebration out of nearby Port of Palm Beach, the path to paradise just got a little shorter.

Sailing a straight shot from Florida to Freeport, Bahamas, every other day, this 47,262-ton ship — the first (and, for now, only) ship in Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line’s fleet — is no stranger to making Caribbean magic. It got its (un)humble beginnings as Celebration , one of the first SuperLiners for Carnival Cruise Line when it debuted back in 1987. (You’ll no doubt recognize the telltale tail when you first lay eyes on the ship and its funnel from port.) While no one would confuse those ships with the at-sea behemoths being created today, overall offerings one might consider “intimate” by comparison are, on Grand Celebration , still plenty charming and exceedingly fun. Kathie Lee Gifford was the godmother of Celebration almost 30 years ago, and, just like the beloved queen of daytime television, this ship is going just as strong today!

Behind Closed Doors

More than 60 percent of Grand Celebration ’s 751 guest cabins have an ocean view, giving most of the ship’s 1,800 potential passengers a loving look of the Atlantic from the comfort of their own room. Staterooms that start at 172-square-feet and include a private bathroom, television, hair dryer, and turndown service make up the bulk of Decks 4 though 7 (whose halls, it should be noted, are lined with hundreds of unique framed art pieces, representing everything from Victorian to modern styles). But it’s the suites on Deck 11 where you imagine past godmothers retiring for the evening. Each has a large terrace, a living room space with a couch and cushy chairs, and a mini bar. The suite Porthole experienced had a gorgeous frosted divider partially/artfully separating our living- and bedrooms, and a whirlpool jet–equipped bathtub that paired well with chocolate strawberries.

Stellar Prime serves as Grand Celebration ’s main dining room, with entrée choices including teriyaki glazed Atlantic salmon filet or sirloin steak and succulent Chateaubriand or Jamaican jerk marinated pork loin, depending on which evening you dine. But for an additional $13, the Admiralty Club specialty restaurant boasts an Italian-founded intimacy unlike anywhere else on the ship, with a five-course menu that includes Peruvian sea bass, maple leaf duck, osso bucco Milanese, veal scaloppini, New York strip steak, and more as entrée options. There is perhaps no bigger bang for your extra buck than a dinner here.

The 850-seat multilevel Legends Grand Theater hosts a different show each night. The choreographed dancing, magical disappearing and person-sawing acts, and thrilling acrobatics in just one variety show were individually worthy of their own headlining performance. The entertainment doesn’t end when the curtain comes down, however. Head down the Isles of Paradise promenade to watch bands perform in the Encore Lounge or be part of the casino action at any of the 10 tables dealing blackjack, Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em, craps, and more. (We found a particularly favorable nook at the port side of the Par-a-dice casino, where a glass divider separating parts of the casino and lounge limits the foot traffic yet still allows the satisfying duet of live music and triumphant slot machines to thrive.) Further down the promenade, one can cut a rug — or, more appropriately, a large, inspiring wooden dance floor — at Voltage Night Club; watch live music in the more subdued, lounge-like Regal Room; and you can’t have an area called “Dancing Martian” if you didn’t have a DJ playing the best music, right there under the stars and behind the funnel on Deck 11. (Did it earn its Martian moniker because the ground is a gorgeous electric green, or because the lovely bartender who served me while I contemplated this question happened to be named Marvin?)

Great Escape

At the aft end of the Paradise Deck (Deck 9), there’s the Indulgence Spa & Salon, which offers treatments like aromatherapy, body scrubs, and massages as well as services for hair, nails, teeth, and waxable areas. And while no escape can compare to one of proactive relaxation, the Sun Deck at the other end of the ship comes close. Here, comfy deck chairs and larger, private pods surround a large, elevated 10-person hot tub. Serene music sets the perfect mood, with a magical design that somehow keeps the steel-drum liveliness of the nearby La Piscina pool from colliding with the tranquil.

Best-Kept Secret

You wouldn’t call something as conspicuous as a hippopotamus a “secret,” but the uniquely designed kid’s slide just outside the Kruzers children’s area is an unexpected, almost hilarious sight to behold should you, say, emerge from the aft pool or hot tubs and want a look at the ocean wake below. Harder to see are some of the maritime touches and memorabilia in what looks, at first glance anyway, like a Deck 8 library with a few card tables. The room is actually called The Helm, and it boasts some of the same memorabilia that Grand   Celebration had when its collection was valued at north of $100,000. Ship models, oil paintings, collecting cards, plates, and pins line the walls, along with the bell from Caronia (which enjoyed its maiden voyage with Cunard in 1949); a china beer mug featuring Hamburg Amerika Line’s S.S. Amerika from 1905; and even a sailing wheel circa 1920s. A prominent brass binnacle inclinometer separates (in spirit, anyway) The Helm from the Commodore Martini Bar, but it’s only when standing outside The Helm did we notice its finest detail: The Helm’s stained glass ceiling actually features ships as well, which upon closer inspection turn out to be none other than Normandie and Queen Mary .

Freeport Fun

Shore excursions in Freeport include adventure, beach, and family options from dolphin swims and Jeep tours to snorkeling, scuba diving, and beach days. We opted for the Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort, where gorgeous Caribbean waters and soft white sands meet luxurious lounge chairs and pools with winding pathways (and, in one pool’s case, a swim-up bar). While we only had the day to experience the infinity pool/strawberry daiquiri action, a number of fellow cruisers coming off the ship were booked to stay at the expansive resort, as overnight packages are available that allow guests to stay there and return back to Florida on Grand Celebration at a future date. Just as we were beginning to sulk about having to belly-back from the swim-up bar and get back on the bus, we heard some fellow bus-passengers/party-revelers singing Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration.” There was still another night of Caribbean-cruise celebrating to enjoy, and all indications were pointing to this celebration being a grand one.

Margaritaville at Sea sets sail on choppy waters: Why you should wait to book a cruise

Tarah Chieffi

As I stepped off the gangway and into the atrium for one of Margaritaville at Sea Paradise's first sailings, I saw a massive blue flip-flop sculpture surrounded by a white life buoy, both emblazoned with the name of the cruise line.

I knew going into this cruise that Margaritaville at Sea Paradise was a 30-year-old ship, previously run by Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line , that had received a multimillion-dollar Margaritaville-themed refurbishment. The atrium, though small, with its freshly painted light blue-and-white walls and subtle tropical theming, made the ship feel brand-new.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

As I explored the rest of the ship, my hopes were high that I would return home from my sailing with the recommendation that Margaritaville at Sea was the ideal weekend getaway for both Parrotheads and the not-yet-indoctrinated Jimmy Buffett fans alike.

By the end of my two-night voyage to Grand Bahama Island, however, I realized the best advice I could give to future cruisers is to hold off until the Margaritaville dream has been fully realized.

What I loved

It's hard to complain about a cruise that starts at just over $250 per person (before gratuities and fuel charges). That cost covers your accommodations; meals (aside from specialty dining); select nonalcoholic beverages such as water, coffee and tea; entertainment; and onboard activities.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

By the end of my cruise, I had racked up roughly $300 in extra charges for a shore excursion that included a day relaxing at a nearby all-inclusive beach resort, iced coffees, a burger from the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar, a souvenir T-shirt and, yes, a few margaritas.

You could keep costs down by cutting back on the add-ons or throw caution to the wind and go all-out. After all, you're on vacation — and at least this vacation doesn't consume too much paid time off.

The stateroom

I've never cruised before and wasn't sure what to expect from the staterooms other than assuming I'd feel like a canned sardine. I was relieved to find the cabins were spacious and bright, with crisp white bedding, tropical artwork on the walls and a large porthole that looked out over the ocean.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

There was a minifridge, a flat-screen television in the corner, a large closet with plenty of storage drawers, a small seating area near the porthole and a desk with a large mirror. I found more than enough USB ports for one guest, but two or more people trying to charge their devices may get into a few scuffles.

The excursions

When we docked in Freeport, some guests grabbed a taxi to one of the island's public beaches, some stayed on the ship to enjoy an uncrowded pool deck and others, including myself, boarded a shuttle bus for one of the ship's prearranged excursions.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

You could swim with dolphins or the famous Bahamian pigs or visit one of two nearby all-inclusive resorts. I paid $99 for a day at the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Resort, which included beach and pool access, alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, lunch and use of kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear.

Our excursion left the ship around 9:15 a.m. and we had to be back on the bus at 3:15 p.m. to be back at the boat by 4 p.m. All in all, I felt it was a good value for a day on the beach and an escape from the crowds on the ship. The ship never felt too crowded (unless you were standing in line at the bar), but nothing feels as secluded as a long stretch of sandy beach.

The onboard entertainment

Aside from a day spent reading and collecting shells on the beach, the absolute highlight of my cruise was "Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy's Ship Show," a musical production based on Buffett's bestselling book, "Tales from Margaritaville."

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

The performers were phenomenal, the musical numbers hit all of Buffett's most popular tunes and audience participation was encouraged. The show even ended with a conga line through the theater. I was such a fan that I watched the show both nights and would do so again were I to sail with Margaritaville in the future.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

"Tales from Margaritaville" was certainly the headlining act, but it was far from the only live entertainment on the ship. Both days were packed with live musical acts, dancing, trivia and game shows, family programming and more.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

I'm not much of a gambler, but I did walk away with close to $100 from the ship's Par-A-Dice Casino after spending about 10 minutes at the penny slots, so the casino gets a thumbs-up from me.

The food and drink

Aside from the less-than-exciting buffet, which I can only assume is par for the course on most cruise lines , the food on Margaritaville at Sea was delicious and plated with care.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

To be fair to the buffet, breakfast was totally acceptable, especially the made-to-order omelets. But after one lunch at the buffet, I knew it would be my last. The food that was meant to be hot was lukewarm at best and the food that was meant to be cold was room temperature.

One night, I had dinner at Fins, the included sit-down restaurant, and on the second night, I ate at the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

The fried cauliflower starter and braised short rib entree I ate at Fins were tasty and well cooked. Because it was included, I said yes to dessert and had a creamy, tangy lemon meringue tart.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

My $15 burger and fries from the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill were equally delicious and I loved the addition of the shark fin toothpick in my burger. The menu also had nachos and a few other burger and sandwich options, all priced a la carte.

Aside from the buffet or the add-on breakfast at JWB Prime Steakhouse, it was tough to find food and drinks until late afternoon when the lounges, coffee shop and other dining venues opened for the day.

I was told by my steward there was room service, but I never received any information about hours or what was on the menu. I had the lunch that was included as part of my second-day excursion and I was glad I did. When I returned to the ship around 4 p.m., my only choices until dinner were pizza, salad or cupcakes from the coffee shop (or a margarita, I guess).

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

I'm more of an IPA gal than a cocktail drinker , but I was a big fan of the margaritas (both frozen and on the rocks) on board the ship. The bars were almost always busy, but the bartenders were friendly and fast and the drinks didn't have that "straight out of a bottle of cocktail mix" flavor that makes me shy away from cocktails in the first place.

What I didn't love

The ship is still actively being refurbished.

Though I hadn't sailed on this ship (or any ship) before, I could easily pick out which carpeting, furniture and wall colors were left over from the ship's prior life as Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line's Grand Classica. In fact, painters were actively updating the ship's Euphoria Lounge during my cruise (which I could both see and smell, though no areas were closed due to ongoing work.)

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

After chatting with other passengers, I learned that the ship is currently only in phase one of a three-phase refurbishment.

Because the inaugural sailing had already been delayed, I assumed that meant the ship would be fully renovated when I stepped on board. Because that wasn't the case, I asked the cruise line's public relations team what the timeline was for completion.

Updates are ongoing, they told me, such as the painting I witnessed during my trip. Here's what's changed in the couple of weeks since my cruise:

  • New carpet has been installed in the Euphoria Lounge.
  • Smokers were installed to provide cruisers with barbecue lunch options when they return from their shore excursions.
  • The styling of the buffet has been updated to match the Margaritaville vibe.
  • Back-of-house updates have been made to improve the guest experience in terms of air conditioning and sanitation.
  • Upgraded kitchen equipment has been installed to enhance the JWB Prime Steakhouse experience.

Margaritaville at Sea is also in the process of implementing wristband technology that guests can use to redeem drink packages on board and for entry into VIP "ticket-only" functions the cruise line has planned for holidays such as New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day. They are also installing a mobile pool bar for guests.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

If I'd known this in advance of my cruise, I would have waited to book until the rebranding process was complete for the full Margaritaville experience.

The ship is showing its age

On top of being nowhere near finished with renovations, or maybe because work is ongoing, this 30-year-old ship is showing its age, both in style and wear and tear.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

The wood paneling found throughout the ship, for example, felt dated and out of line with the beachy Margaritaville style. Paired with the matching furniture in the staterooms and common areas, it was a bit of oak-wood overload.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

Though the staterooms had been completely overhauled, it was obvious the bathrooms hadn't been touched.

Related: 22 cruise ship cabin hacks that will transform your voyage

Everything was in working order, but the bathroom fixtures and colors looked the same as photos I had seen of the ship prior to being refurbished. Even a palm tree-dotted shower curtain would have made the room feel fresh and on brand.

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

It wasn't just the style of the ship that snapped me out of my Parrothead paradise. Each time I passed through the buffet, I saw buckets catching water from ceiling leaks in different spots. On its own, I wouldn't have thought much of a little leak, but when combined with the ship's other shortcomings, it stuck out as yet another issue to address.

As with any new experience, changes are often made in the early days as customer feedback rolls in and real-time issues are addressed. The cruise line did not share specific details on plans to update the bathrooms or other cosmetic features of the ship, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen in the future.

The pools were tiny

bahama paradise cruise line reviews

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise has two pools on board — the all-ages License to Chill pool and the adults-only 12 Volt pool. Both are small and square, and once 10 or so people were in the water, I felt there wasn't much room for anyone else. I loved that Margaritaville at Sea provided beach balls and floats (cheeseburger- and parrot-shaped inflatables, of course), but they took up most of the pool's real estate.

The atmosphere was not so family-friendly

While there were a few families with young kids on board, most passengers were couples, friend groups or families with adult children. There were three kids clubs for children of various age groups and a few family-centered activities each day, but this was definitely an adult-oriented ship.

It was also obvious most people were there to party. Nobody was out of control, but the activities and dancing later in the evening were aimed at a mature audience. My kids aren't quite ready to see people "showing off their sexiest dance moves" or "pretending to give birth" — both of which were directives in the team scavenger hunt on the second evening.

Between the lack of swimming space and the dearth of activities until later in the evening, I'd be hesitant to set sail with my kids.

Who goes on a Margaritaville cruise (and what did they think of it)?

I spoke with a lot of my shipmates during the cruise. (They all hailed from Florida, by the way.) I wanted to know what drew people to Margaritaville at Sea and how they felt about the experience.

Some had been on the ship prior to the rebranding and wanted to sail again now that it had been updated. Some were celebrating birthdays or anniversaries and wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. A few lived so close to the beach that they could go whenever they wanted and were looking to shake things up.

Everyone seemed to be having a good time and enjoying their "floating island vacation," but some were less impressed by the ship than others.

One guest told me she missed the "French elegance" the ship had before the rebrand. It is true that most ships have a formal dress-up night, which Margaritaville at Sea Paradise does not. In fact, save for Fins and the JWB Prime Steakhouse, there weren't any other areas where guests were required to change out of their swimsuits and flip-flops.

A casual vibe is on brand for Margaritaville, but if you're used to how other cruise lines do things, you might be in for a surprise.

When a certificate for a free cruise showed up in my stateroom on the final evening, along with a letter inviting me back to "experience everything the ship had to offer," I wondered if this was normal for a cruise and asked other passengers if they received one, as well.

The general consensus was that there had been so many complaints during our cruise that everyone was given a certificate to come back and see it once more work has been done, though the cruise line said this was a special offering for guests who sailed over Memorial Day weekend in order to "recognize the holiday and delight guests."

Bottom line

I can have fun anywhere, and I had more than my fair share on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, but I'd want the ship's upgrade and rebranding to be fully finished before I cruise on that ship again.

I'd also do a few things differently if I were to sail on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise again. I would choose a cabin more toward the front of the ship to avoid some of the vibrations I could feel in my room and I'd pack snacks to make up for the lack of midday dining availability.

I'd love to see the ship again once the renovations are complete. I was told that the ship's phased refurbishment should be completely finished in the coming weeks, though no specific date was provided, and I'd have to recommend that other cruisers find out if the ship is fully renovated before going "Fins Up" with Margaritaville at Sea.

We have been on the Bahamas Paradise many times and always have a great time. There's always something to do.. fun parties, karaoke, contests and dancing. We found the food in the dining room ok but not great. But there is always somewhere to get something to eat and we never went hungry!

This cruise was an amazing value

This cruise was an amazing value. The staff was very helpful and nice. The food was excellent and plentiful. We did upgraded dining at Admiralty on one night, trust me, spend the $33 extra as this was some of the best food I have ever eaten. I can not say enough good things about this cruise. What are you waiting for? Book it!

A Few Days of Absolute Paradise

This was my first cruise EVER so perhaps I don’t have a comparison. However, I really don’t see how the entire cruise could have been any BETTER.

For the price and if you are not a cruise snob, this is a fun little getaway. The Spa is wonderful and Indira is amazing. The Service is prompt and top notch. Rio on the wait staff is outstanding.

Love this ship

This is the best cruise ever. You always get the best customer service. All the staff makes you feel like your family. They always take time to get to know you. The casino host sits with people that are not sure how to play and guide them. You could train others how to run there ships.
