Versailles, far more than just a Palace!

Our Versailles Bike Tour with reserved entry into the Palace is the perfect way to discover the grandeur of the 2,000 acre Royal Domain of Versailles!

You'll start your tour by exploring the local farmers market and picking up some supplies for your picnic lunch along the lake. Then spend the day discovering the royal grounds, the inside of Marie Antoinette’s private domain, the Grand & Petit Trianon chateaux, culminating in your reserved entry into the beautiful Palace of Versailles with its famous Hall of Mirrors.

Cycle with us and learn about the Sun King’s life and legacies, the scandals of Louis 15th and his 50 mistresses, and Queen Marie-Antoinette during the French Revolution. Your guide will share the French Royalty’s history with you in a fun and interactive way and you’ll go home loving Versailles.

FYI : Blue Fox Travel does not make you carry your Blue Bike™ onto the train, the bikes for this tour are stored just across the street from the Palace, in Versailles.

Picnic By The Lake.

A perfect day in Versailles.

On our Versailles Bike Tour we’ve planned out everything to be fun, easy, and well organized. We’ve focused on all the little details and created an incomparably awesome, stress free, day of exploration in Versailles.

Start the day by meeting up with your guide in central Paris at the train station named Gare Saint-Lazare (exact details in booking confirmation). We’ll provide the train tickets for you and together you’ll take the train to the town of Versailles. The train ride takes about 35 minutes and then you’ll arrive right next to the Farmers Market. Please note than your Blue Bike™ is waiting for you in our Versailles bike hub, you do not have to carry your bike into the train.

Versailles Farmers Market and picnic by the lake.

Your first stop in Versailles will be the wonderful Farmers Market. There you’ll be free to roam the brimming food stalls and pick up your own lunch supplies for the picnic that’s planned for later in the day. Once you have finished shopping you’ll be fitted to a Blue Bike™ and given some bike panniers (baskets) so you can carry all of your picnic supplies.

Your guide will then lead you into the 2,000 acre Royal Domain of Versailles and show you all of the most picturesque and historically interesting parts of it. You’ll cycle at a medium speed and cover about 11K or 7 miles on mostly flat ground. During this time you’ll stop every 15 minutes or so to hear fun bits of history and learn about the life and legend of our famous Sun King, Louis the 14th, and our infamous Queen, Marie-Antoinette. You’ll also stop for a picnic lunch by the beautiful lake with a view over the Palace.

Marie-Antoinette's Hamlet

Louis the XIVth and Marie-Antoinette

Following the picnic you’ll get to experience some of the unique hideaways which the royalty enjoyed when you visit their private homes known as the Petit and Grand Trianons. You’ll learn about and enjoy free time inside of King Louis’ Grand Trianon, his marble summer home with exquisite French Gardens. Then you’ll cycle next door to learn about and explore inside of the very private Petit Trianon, which was built exclusively for the king’s favorite mistress Madame de Pompadour.

Afterwards you’ll have the free time to walk along the little dirt paths from the Petit Trianon to Marie-Antoinette’s Private Domaine. You’ll wander through the adorable English style garden and admire the small farmers village which Marie Antoinette had built for herself. It is unlike any other part of Versailles and gives us a deep and wonderful glimpse into the folly and longing of Marie-Antoinette’s heart. The time spent in the Private Domain of Marie-Antoinette, is completely on foot, as bikes are not allowed, and usually lasts 45 minutes.

Palace and Hall of Mirrors

By this time you will have learned about and experienced so much of the history of Versailles that the only thing left to do is explore inside the main Palace of Versailles itself, so that’s what you’ll do. You’ll say goodbye to your Blue Bike™ and your guide will escort you right to the entrance of the Palace itself where you will say goodbye to them. Inside of the Palace you'll be free to explore at your own pace and focus on the rooms that interest you the most for as little or as long as you like.

The Hall of Mirrors

Good to Know:

  • From April to October the French garden which is attached to the Palace closes at 8:30PM, so you will have plenty of time to visit it after your time inside the Palace.

Tickets to the Musical Fountain Show are included in our tour price only for participants who select the “Adults" fare. For Kids and Paris Museum Passes : tickets can be purchased directly on site if desired. Please note that these tickets are not necessary to have during our tour, you can visit the Fountain Show on your own after our tour is over.

  • We’ll provide all of the train tickets to and from Versailles back to Paris. The trains back to Paris leave every 15 minutes and the last train leaves around 11:00pm.
  • Most people prefer to spend about 1 to 1.5 hours inside of the Palace. If you’re like them then you can plan on being back in Paris sometime around 6-6:30pm so don’t make any dinner reservations before 7pm!

No refunds are given for ANY reason once within the 24 hrs prior to the scheduled tour. All of our tours run Rain or Shine. We do not issue refunds if you choose to skip your tour because the weather doesn’t suit you. You can always wait until the last minute to book your tour to ensure the weather suits you that day. Flooding, hail, dangerous weather conditions, riots, etc. In such instances full refunds will be given to anyone who had their tour cancelled.

II - Satisfaction Guarantee Policy

If the tour you took with us didn’t live up to what we promised you on our website and failed to meet your expectations, we will be heartbroken. We will also give you a 100% refund so long as you do all of these things: You remember that we we are in no way responsible for the weather and that our guides actually have to give 110% of themselves to you on days when the weather is not as nice in order to help you enjoy the tour. You participate in the entire tour from: being on time at the meeting point until the “goodbyes” at the very end of the tour. You can’t leave a tour half-way and ask for your money back. At the end of the tour you tell your guide, in person, that you were not satisfied with the tour you took. You provide your tour guide with the reasons you were not satisfied with the tour itself.

III - Payment Policy

A valid credit card is required to secure your booking. All reservations must be prepaid online prior to the tour. We accept Visa, Mastercard. None of your personal credit card or billing information is stored by BFT.

IV - Privacy Policy

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Your personal informations will never be disclosed to any third parties.

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). We also have some cool Burley™ tandem attachment bikes that are suitable for little kids who are too big for the baby seat but too small to cycle on their own (max weight 38 kg (85 lbs) - max height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in)).

VII - Damages to Blue Fox Travel Property

If you or anyone in your party damages a vehicle, a Blue Bike™, a vehicle, a child's bike, a helmet, a baby/child seat, a tandem attachment bike, any bike attachments, or a booster seat in such a way that it becomes badly disfigured, broken, or unusable, then BFT reserves the right to claim a fee of up to the cost of repair of the damaged bike/vehicle or object.

Château de Versailles is one of the   most famous castles near Paris , built in the 17th century as a hunting lodge for King Louis XIII. Years later, King Louis XIV , his son, moved to Versailles with his family and the royal court, and he undertook major works to transform the château into one of the most beautiful French castles .

Versailles Estate includes the Palace, Trianons, formal gardens, and a forest. Versailles gardens and forest feature 200,000 trees, 50 fountains , and a 5.57km canal. Believe me; you will want to explore the Versailles Estate as much as you can!

The Palace of Versailles is one of the top sights to visit near Paris. We recommend a day trip to Versailles from Paris in the following Paris itineraries:

  • 4 days in Paris it inerary
  • 5 days in Paris itinerary
  • 6 days in Paris itinerary

Why a Versailles Bike Tour is a Good Idea

The Versailles Estate was built with traveling by horseback in mind, so the spread-out grounds are much more manageable on two wheels. A 30-minute hike on foot is cut down to five by bike, allowing you to see much more without wondering where the next bench is.

Versailles by bike tour is easy! The  Versailles Estate is totally flat, so you don’t need to be an experienced biker or super fit to enjoy a Versailles bike tour.

How to Visit Versailles by Bike

If you are considering a Versailles by bike day tour, you can do it alone or with a guided tour. Go on reading for all the options:

1. Join a Guided Versailles Bike Tour

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

A Versailles by bike day tour from Paris always comes with bike rental, a knowledgeable guide, and skip-the-line access to Versailles Palace, Trianon Palaces, and the Queen Hamlet.

The tour finishes at the palace, where you will get an audio guide for a visit inside. You can tour the Palace at your own pace, as long as you wish, before heading back to Paris.

A Versailles by bike day tour is a good idea. The guides know many stories about Versailles and its guests, and you can ask them as many questions as you want so the visit is more interactive. Also, they know when is the best time to visit each building to avoid crowds for a more pleasant visit.

TIP: This Versailles bike tour , with Palace and Trianons visit, is consistently rated 5 stars and has excellent reviews. Forget about logistics and tickets and have fun!

2. Self-Guided Versailles Bicycle Tour

For some, the best way to visit Versailles will be a self-guided bike tour at their own path and visiting what they want.

If you have a bicycle, the next chapter will tell you how to transport it from Paris to Versailles by train.

If you don’t have a bicycle, the next chapter will tell you all the Versailles bike rental options.

2. Versailles Bike Rental

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

In Versailles, it is possible to rent bikes for adults, children, and tandem bicycles in different places of the park.

There are three Versailles bike rental points:

  • Little Venice (by the canal),
  • Saint Antoine Gate ,
  • The Queen’s Gate .

Little Venice bike rental point is always open whilst the other two points only open on weekends and holidays. Opening times are from 10 am to 5 pm or 6.45 pm depending on the season.

On weekends we recommend renting your bike at the Queen’s Gate because it is the closest point to Versailles Rive Droite train station (850 m, 11-minute walk).

On weekends, there’s also the possibility of taking a bike at one point and relate it to another.

Rental prices are €18 per half-day (4 hours), €20 per day (8 hours).

Unfortunately, the Velib bikes are not available in Versailles.

3. Bringing Bikes on the Train from Paris to Versailles

train station in Paris

To travel from Paris to Versailles by train, you will take a Transilien train from Paris Gare Saint Lazare (Paris 8) to Paris Rive Droite train station. This is a 35 min ride, and you don’t need to book train tickets in advance.

In the Parisian Region, it is possible to transport your bike on trains for free but it is subject to certain conditions:

  • From Monday to Friday you need to travel out of peak traffic hours before 06.30, between 9.30 and 16.30, and after 19.30.
  • No time restrictions on Saturday, Sunday, and bank holidays.
  • If trains are crowded, do not board with your bicycle.
  • On the train, on platforms, and in stations, you must walk your bicycle. For safety reasons, don’t take escalators with your bike.

SNCF Trains for bikes

Look for the train wagons with the bike logo. These wagons are adapted for bikes, with special hooks to fix the bikes. When traveling on a Transilien train, you are responsible for transporting, handling, and watching over your bicycle.

From Versailles Rive Droite train station, it is only a 5-minute bike ride to the Queen’s Gate.

IMPORTANT: Bikes are not allowed inside the formal gardens and the Estate of Trianon.

We recommend starting your Palace of Versailles bike tour at the Queen’s Gate (2) at 10 am, earlier if you come to Versailles with your own bike.

Explore the park and forest between points (2), (11), and (10). Then head to the bike racks at La Petite Venise (3) to park your bikes and visit the palace’s formal gardens on foot (4).

Take your bike and after admiring the Apollo’s fountain (5) look for a nice spot for a picnic on the grass by the Grand Canal (6) or a light meal at the restaurant La Petite Venise (you can book here )

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

Do the canal tour, stopping for some pictures at La Lanterne (7) and the Royal Star (8). Then it’s time to visit the Grand Trianon (9), Petit Trianon (10), and the Queen’s Hamlet (11), which open at 12 pm.

Leave the Palace of Versailles for late afternoon, when there are lesser crowds. The entrance to the palace is at Place d’Armes (12). We suggest a 2-hour visit, from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm.

Versailles Bike Tips, Do’s & Don’ts

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

Bring lots of water, wear comfortable clothes and cover your head in the summer.

Bikes are not allowed inside the Palace’s formal gardens and inside the Estate of Trianon.

WHERE TO PARK YOUR BIKE IN VERSAILLES?

Bike racks are available in different spots throughout the Estate of Versailles: in front of the Place d’Armes, next to the Queen’s Gate in the Park, near the Grand Trianon, near the Petit Trianon, La Flottille restaurant, and the Petite Venise.

You can have your bike with you on the grass when having your picnic by the canal.

We also parked our bike in one of the car parks near the formal gardens.

You’ll have certainly worked up an appetite with all that cycling on our Versailles bike tour . We’ll take a break next with a delicious picnic lunch. Enjoy good food, and a glass of wine, and sit back and listen to some more intriguing stories about French Royalty. Where better to hear them than where they took place?

A Gentle Walk to the Neptune Fountain

We’ll now leave our bikes behind and head to the beautiful Neptune Fountain. This is a great play to stretch your legs and enjoy a stroll. The fountains and gardens are breathtaking and make a beautiful backdrop for photos. It’s one of the many highlights on our Versailles bike tour.

Enjoy Skip-the-Line Entry to the Palace

Hi Milkmaid,

We were going to do bikes but it was pouring rain while we were at Versailles, so we waited (and waited) and took a golf cart - the kids (12 and 15) enjoyed this too, and the grounds are absolutely massive - it turned out to be a good thing. As for the grounds, they are all flat, paved from what saw, but it is just that the property is so, so massive. Have fun - I hope you have good weather - it would be lovely if you did.

' class=

Hi! Sorry to hear you had bad weather! The golf carts sound good to me too but I understand they only operate on a certain track or path and don't go to the Hameau? Can you park them and walk around the different areas?

There are a limited number of golf carts and priority is given to senior and handicapped persons.

' class=

We just returned from our trip, but we didn’t rent bikes because we couldn’t find the bike place onsite so we ended up walking the whole dang estate. We would have rented from Velo, but we thought it would be too much of a hassle to find somewhere to put them while we were touring the Chateau.

During our exhausting trek of the grounds, I did notice that there are bike racks at the Grand Trianon, just in case anyone else is worried about finding a place to lock up a bike.

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

Thanks to all who posted in this forum The info has been very helpful. I'm planning to visit Versailles (first time) by bike on a weekday end of March. Having read your posts I have some ideas that it is possible to rent bikes with locks and to park the bikes outside palaces. Just a few more questions:

1) which bike rentals provide bikes with locks?

2) if I rent from "Velo" near the train station should I do the chateau first thing in the morning? That was my plan after seeing all the stories about the queuing I thought I'd go there first thing after arrival.

2) if I rent from "Velo" near the train station should I do the chateau first thing in the morning? That was my plan after seeing all the stories about the queuing I thought I'd go there first thing after arrival. However I don't know if the bike rental would open earlier than the chateau.

3) would there be bikes with a basket to hold belongings I'm considering to take my DSLR camera with me in a large bag.

Just a clarification, the bike store is not called Velo (which just means "bike" in French) but Phébus. It is just outside the Versailles-Chantiers train station. Both this store and the rental location on the château grounds include locks with rentals. I don't know if they come with baskets so I would bring a backpack just in case.

If you rent from Phébus why not just check out the line when you arrive and if it looks long try back later?

Just an FYI on the Phébus store hours as it is confusing on their website. The Phebus store is open Monday through Friday all throughout the year. But they are also open on weekends in July and August from 11AM to 6PM. I called them on the phone to verify this.

Look at this thread and in reply #3 it will give you instructions on how to get to Versailles from the bike store, where to enter the grounds with bikes and where you can bike on the grounds:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187147-i14-k7193843-Kids_bikes_and_Versailles-Paris_Ile_de_France.html#56021628

As far as where to lock the bikes I'm sure there must be some bike racks somewhere in or near the large plaza in front of the château. Otherwise look around and see where people have locked their bikes (street lamps etc.) and do likewise. I'm sure there must be bike racks at strategic locations on the grounds or just lock your bike where others have locked theirs.

Have you written to them to ask your question?

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

We will be going at the end of June. Do you think that the grounds, paths and roads will be too busy with pedestrian and bike traffic for biking? There will be seven of us.

Are there any real differences between these companies offering bike tours of Versailles? I'm thinking the only real difference between renting a bike on your own and the tours is that the tours allow you this "cut the line" experience when you get to the palace. If anyone has any experience, I would appreciate feedback. Thanks

' class=

Good question. The tours have their own bikes not the ones rented on the estate.

No one is allowed to cycle in their gardens.

The tours do take you through town a little, and the guide will give some history lessons on the guided route but... you could do this own your own, yes, with a smartphone and a credit card. And buy your own timed ticket to the palace if indeed you want to see the interior of the palace.

Kind of fun if you like group tours. More freedom to do on your own.

Oh just thought of one other consideration... the Versailles guided bike tours, red bike, blue bike, fat bike, etc don't cancel due to rain nor can you for a refund. However, I think they provide those €1 ponchos on rainy days.

If you do rent on your own and you only want to spend 1 hour of bike rental money then IMHO the best hour ride is the simplest one around the entire canal system with a pause at the very end for a selfie or picnic on the grass, the bike tours will be there too. That grass in the foreground is the win-win, too far to walk...: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:100_3055_-_Chateau_Versailles_et_Le_Grand_Canal.png

@adventuretoursfrance thanks so much for the feedback on this!

Cheers guzmanalexa, and... one more thing, if you wish to explore more of the estate then IMHO cycling around the open farmlands on the Marie Antoinette side is more pleasing than cycling on narrow paths with 50 foot high trees on both sides blocking any view. Fun for a minute but the other side will feel like farm country....

So.. once you have your picnic at the million dollar grass lawn view then head for the MA side instead of circling the entire canals. Probably a 2 hour rental with that picnic pause.

In the summer you could rent at the Queen's gate the bikes which forces the combination. Plus you could avoid traversing the actual gardens with your picnic basket of goodies.

Friends have done a bike tour to Versailles - and they said it was fantastic. Both Viator and Fat Tire run these tours - but at $110pp it is a little expensive for us as a family of four.

Can anyone please advise - would we be able to hire bikes and helmets, catch the RER train to Versailles and purchase our lunch at the markets (as they do in the tour) and purchase our own tickets through the palace??

If you can help with places to hire the bikes etc and where would I pre purchase the Versailles palace entry tickets - and what would they include??

Any comments welcome - thanks so much,

' class=

There's a bike shop right by the RER station in Versailles - hire your bikes there. Much much cheaper.

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

Someone just posted a similar question yesterday. A responder replied that bikes can be rented on the palace grounds for 6 euros per hour (they had just rented them 2 days ago) and I believe the rental location is right at the start of the Grand Canal adjacent to the formal gardens behind the palace.

If you don't have it, here is the link to the château website:

http://en.chateauversailles.fr/prepare-my-visit-/single/services

The website will tell you all about your ticket purchase options. Purchasing them ahead of time will save you time waiting in line to buy them there.

You can also rent a bike at a shop outside the grounds for a cheaper rate of 12 euros a day if you'd like. This bike rental store is located right next to the RER stop at Versailles-Chantiers. This way you can visit the town center and pick up your own picnic supplies.

http://velo-versailles.fr/phebusveloan/index.html

When I was there with my bike last summer they wouldn't let me take my bike through the front entry. I had to enter through a side entry. If you are facing the château just keep moving to the right following the wall around the château. After a few blocks you will see the entry where you can bring your bike. It is near the Bassin de Neptune. This is near where Boulevard de la Reine intersects with Boulevard du Roi.

I would imagine the bike rental store will provide you with locks. Once inside the palace grounds there are 3 places where you can not take your bikes (even if you walk with them) and these are the formal gardens behind the château, the hamlet and the trianon. Otherwise you can go anywhere else with your bikes within the grounds.

Here is a link to the Versailles tourist office which will give you lots of other info. If you click on the tab for "practical information" you will see a link that says "city map" so you can download the map and bring it with you. Once you are in town you can visit the tourist office in person and they will answer all of your questions. Here is the link:

http://www.versailles-tourisme.com/en/accueil.html

Thank you SO very much - great information and yes - the 12 euros for the bikes for the day compared to the 320 Euro tour - certainly makes more sense - I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into your detailed response :-)

Glad to hear you found my response helpful and I hope you have a wonderful (and inexpensive) day!

We have done the bike tour to Versailles twice with Fat Tire Bike Tours. There is a big difference in doing a bike tour of Versailles on your own and going with this company. They are incredible... includes entrance into Versailles, and the information is incredible.

You certainly CAN do this yourself, but I highly recommend this company if you want some great information on all the areas around Versailles. We had a fabulous time... loved stopping at the market in Versailles and buying picnic supplies and really enjoyed our guides for the day.

Viator is just a ticket selling company. They are probably selling them for Fat Tire. If you go with Fat Tire, book with them direct. They are a great group of kids that run the tours.

If you are really on a budget I've worked out a cost comparison that may assist you in making your choice. The round trip RER ticket is 6.10 euros per person. The bike rental from the company I gave you is 12 euros a day. For 18 euros you gain entry to the palace (includes audio-guide), grounds (free anyway), Trianon and Hamlet. However, if your kids are under 18 admission is free. The total price per adult is 36.10 euros. The total price per child under 18 is 18.10 euros. If you are only interested in biking the grounds, that is free.

If you are interested in buying picnic supplies from one of the town markets then here is a link to the tourist office website which will give you the times, locations and dates of the different markets in town:

http://www.versailles-tourisme.com/en/discoveries/tours-and-places-to-explore/versailles-markets.html

If you play around with the tourist office website you will also find a great deal of historical background about Versailles that will enhance your knowledge of what you will see. For instance, use the "Discoveries" tab and scroll down to the "Tours and places to explore" and the "Off-beat Versailles" links and then notice the sub-links that appear to the right of each of these. Each of these then contains further links to an absolute wealth of information about the palace, the town and its historical places/monuments, notable persons/events and overall history. You'd be amazed at how much you can learn by researching this website.

For our trip to Versailles we just considered renting the bikes on the grounds, we also thought about doing what the OP mentioned here instead of a whole "tour"- I like the idea of having our own schedule or just breaking up our tour of the estate to make it more enjoyable. But it's mentioned that neither the bike rental shop or the Versaille rentals provide locks. Would anyone know- if I bring my own (lock) from home, are there even areas before the gardens or Trianons to lock the bikes? I would also imagine we'd be able to get a map of the estate and see how we'd arrange our day and tour accordingly; would this help to clarify our bounderies with the bike? For something as big and wonderful as Versailles I prefer not to "wing it" or learn it's too much of a hassel to rent a bike anyway.

If you brought your own locks I'm sure you can lock your bikes somewhere. If you're not allowed to lock them to the gate any nearby tree will do. But I bet there may even be bikes racks to lock up your bike. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Check the tourist office website I gave you and I'd be surprised if there wasn't a downloadable map of the grounds on there. You could probably get one inside the palace I'm sure and also at the tourist office outside the palace. It is not at all a hassle to rent a bike, either on the grounds or for cheaper off of the grounds at the place I mentioned. You really will learn an awful lot about Versailles if you explore the website and the various links contained within it that I mentioned above but you'll have to commit to spending some time looking it over.

Recently I also found another bike rental store just next to the RER stop Versailles-Chantiers:

http://www.velo-versailles.fr/phebusveloan/index.html

Wonderful, yes I don't mind at all committing some time to learning more...Thanks for your reply!!

Happy planning!

Thank you so much!!!

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

Hi - Just wondering - did you like the experience of doing this with a large tour or do you wish that you had done it on your own?

I really enjoyed being with the group...it was nice to make new acquaintances and share the experience with fellow travelers!! I suppose if I could afford to do it with a private guide, I could see advantages to that as well. Having done other things on that trip with a private guide, I'd say if that is an option, it would be a good one. But, both of our Fat Tire experiences (we also did their night Segway tour) were very enjoyable.

Hi can I rent a bicycle at the gardens to do my own ride? Do you know where I can rent a bicycle? Thsnks

versailles bike tour tripadvisor

Yes, you can rent bikes on the grounds. It costs 6.50€ per hour, 15€ for a half day and 17€ for a full day. The link below will tell you more:

http://www.versailles-tourisme.com/en/fun-activities/loisir/astel-grand-canal-boats-bicycles-electric-cars.html

The next link will show you a map of the gardens with icons for the bike rental locations:

http://www.chateauversailles.fr/resources/pdf/en/plans/plan_general_en.pdf

You will get a better deal on the bike rental cost if you rent from a bike store not on the grounds but just next to the Versailles-Chantiers RER/train station. The bikes cost 12€ a day here:

French_Mystique,

Thank you for your post; this is exactly the bike info I was looking for. I am going to Versailles in February, so I am aware that weather may prevent us from touring the grounds by bike, but I would prefer to bike the grounds rather than walk if possible so I'm trying to figure out my options in advance.

Can you offer any info on what to do with the bikes rented from Velo Versailles when we are touring the palace? Does it make more sense to go back to the RER station/bike shop to rent the bikes after we've toured the palace and are ready to see the grounds?

If we do rent at the start of the day and lock the bikes while touring the palace, do you think it would be safe to leave them locked up, i.e. do we need to worry about bike theft?

Obviosuly I can't make any guarantees but I think you'd be fine if you locked the bikes while you were visiting the palace. They're rental bikes and not top quality bike so they're not highly sought after and a target for theft but as I said, I can't guarantee that. I'd rent them first thing instead of wasting time going to get them after your visit. I know the bikes at the Phebus facility are only about 1-2 years old and a bit nicer than the ones they rent on the palace grounds. Check their hours and make sure they are open when you visit. If it were me, I'd rent the bikes and lock them while I visited the palace. I don't know off hand where there is a place to lock the bikes near the palace but I'm sure there is a place. Whoever is working security at the entrance to the palace can direct you to a place to lock your bikes. Otherwise, just look around at where the locals seem to be locking their bikes and do the same as they do. I generally lock my bike to anything that can't be moved (street signs, lamp posts etc.) as long as there are no signs prohibiting me from locking my bike.

You can't bring bikes into the grounds through the front entry so you'll have to move to one of the side entries to ride the bikes into the grounds. The closest entry is probably at the Bassin de Neptune right across from Boulevard de la Reine. The bikes are allowed anywhere in the grounds except the formal gardens behind the palace and in the Trianon and Hamlet.

We rented our bikes in the gardens (at the Petit Venise area), and that was great too. No advance planning needed. We liked that the rental fee was in increments of 15 minutes, so we didn't need to pay attention to how long we kept the bikes. (No paying for a full hour if we were 10 minutes late, for example). The bikes came with locks. I think we had them for about two hours, and in that time rode widely and randomly thru the grounds, including to the end of the canal; parked and visited Petit Trianon; parked and visited Petit Hameau, the fantasy peasant village built for Marie Antoinette (one of the highlights of the visit). We returned them before touring the palace.

My family doesn't bike much but we can all keep one upright. On that note:

, are the grounds relatively flat? Do they have various sized bikes -for a 9 year old? I really want to get my family to the Hameau and Triannons then maybe see the Palace if they are still game. Avoiding lines is also a priority!
