Tour Confidential: Is the golf-ball rollback a good idea, and will the PGA Tour fall in line?

Rory McIlroy teeing it up at the 2022 PGA Championship.
Check in every week for the unfiltered opinions of our writers and editors as they break down the hottest topics in the sport, and join the conversation by tweeting us @golf_com . Today, we convened a special discussion to break down the potential ramifications of the USGA and R&A’s ball announcement .
The USGA and R&A announced Tuesday a proposal for a local rule , to be instituted as soon as 2026, that would, in effect, give organizers of “elite competitions” the option to require players to use a rolled-back ball. Good idea, bad idea or somewhere in between?
Josh Sens, senior writer ( @joshsens ): I think the analogy here is climate change. Not nearly as serious a problem as an eco-apocalypse, of course. But the parallels are there. We’ve known about the issue for a long, long time, but there was never much will to do anything about it. Addressing it fully now would require far more sweeping changes than what the governing bodies are proposing. But even these more modest changes are going to trigger serious resistance across the board, from big financial interests and individuals alike. The manufacturers aren’t apt to like them. And the fan at home who likes to see the long ball is going to gripe, “Hey, don’t yuck my yum,” much like the motorist who says, “Don’t tell me not to drive my Hummer to the supermarket.”
Dylan Dethier, senior writer ( @dylan_dethier ): To Josh’s analogy, I worry this change is the equivalent of banning plastic straws. Is there a real issue? Yes, of course! But the solution — changing elite players’ tee shots by 5% — feels like it won’t be drastic enough to make a significant difference but will be drastic enough to annoy and confuse people.
Golf-ball rules could dramatically change under new proposal. Here’s what we know
Jack Hirsh, assistant editor ( @JR_HIRSHey ): The genie has been out of the bottle for too long. If golf wanted to do something about distance, it needed to do it BEFORE Tiger Woods came out on Tour. It’s far too late now for a rolled-back ball, and it’s going to affect way more people than golf’s governors intend.
Ryan Barath, senior editor, equipment ( @rdsbarath ): This is a good thing, and I’m happy to see golf’s ruling bodies willing to make a change. I would be willing to go as far as to say they should make it a top-to-bottom change and prevent the rules from being different for elite players. But having seen enough recreational golfers struggle, this is a great start.
Jonathan Wall, managing editor ( @jonathanrwall ): I think the USGA and R&A’s intentions are coming from a good place. But as many of many colleagues have already stated, the proposed changes don’t seem drastic enough and feel like they’re coming about two decades too late. As Mike Whan said Tuesday, golf’s minders are fully prepared to see distances return to where they currently are in about 12-15 years. At that point, another rollback will be needed. It’s essentially a Band-Aid. It’s a good idea, provided everyone (tours and manufacturers) gets on board, and they’re able to flesh out some of the initial proposals. I’m cautiously optimistic this could work.
Jessica Marksbury, multimedia editor ( @:jess_marksbury ): I think it’s somewhere in between. My colleagues have all made good points. I guess I wonder how many people are *truly* bothered by the distance top-level pros are hitting the ball. Bifurcation seems like an intense shake-up for a minimal gain — or, I guess I should say, loss. I understand the desire to protect golf’s records, history and course integrity. But length certainly isn’t the only thing that makes golf challenging.
Hirsh: Totally agree, JMar! I think most people loved when Bryson DeChambeau tried to drive the green on a par-5. And length definitely is not golf’s only defense. Pebble Beach plays under 7,000 yards for the Pro-Am and just over that number for U.S. Opens. Would anyone argue that it wasn’t a spectacular test in 2019? You can make a shorter course challenging without “tricking it up.” Maybe we need to put the onus on architects here.
So many questions to ponder! First up, will the PGA Tour adopt the rule? In a statement Tuesday, the Tour said, in part, “We will continue our own extensive independent analysis of the topic and will collaborate with the USGA and The R&A, along with our membership and industry partners, to evaluate and provide feedback on this proposal. The TOUR remains committed to ensuring any future solutions identified benefit the game as a whole, without negatively impacting the TOUR, its players or our fans’ enjoyment of our sport.” What’s your read? Will the Tour fall in line?
Hirsh: I think we need to hear from more players. The decision is ultimately up to them, but it sounds like none of them want to hit the ball shorter. I say no.
Sens: In a word, no, not when more immediate financial interests would appear to favor the status quo.
How would golf-ball manufacturers make a shorter ball, anyway? Here are 3 ways
Dethier: Early feedback hasn’t been great. But there are three years between now and implementation — something could give. The USGA could modify its proposal. The Tour could find some halfway point. But incentives favor the status quo, to Sens’ point. Tour pros don’t want a big change when they’ve optimized to get here. This will also complicate the marketing engine that connects pros to ams; if you’re using a different ball, that connection disappears. The USGA is taking a risk here, because potential rejection from top Tours could create a power struggle that nobody would win.
Barath: At the end of the day, I think you might hear some grumbling, but the PGA Tour and its players are going to fall in line with the rule changes. As a whole, golf is still much bigger than the PGA Tour, and if two of golf’s majors are going to be played under certain equipment parameters, the Tour will follow suit — especially if Augusta National quickly sides with the governing bodies.
Wall: With two-plus years to get the PGA Tour on board, I think there’s a good chance we see them fall in line. It would still be intriguing if only the U.S. Open and Open Championship adopted the MLR golf ball, but you need complete buy-in from the tours to legitimize the current proposal.
Marksbury: That’s interesting to think about, Jonathan. I could see this rolling out for just USGA and R&A championships. Or maybe there could be some kind of calculation to discern if a given course could benefit from implementing the rule. It would be super-fun to see some iconic, old-school courses that were perhaps once considered obsolete because they are “too short” to challenge the pros as hosts of future tournaments. This rule could make that possible.
The governing bodies said they intend to adopt the rule for their own events, meaning a modified ball could well be in play at both the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and also that year’s Open Championship at St. Andrews. How much of an adjustment do you suppose the ball will be for the world’s best players, and generally what response would you expect from them?
Sens: I’m no golf-ball design expert, but my guess is that the world’s best players would remain the world’s best players, and that they would do what they always do: adjust quickly.
Dethier: Distance will remain a massive advantage. From what I understand, distance would actually become even a slightly greater advantage. But it’ll be a pain in the butt in the meantime, so I doubt most pros will be excited about the big adjustment.
Barath: Pros adjust from week to week when it comes to altitude and carry distance and any adjustment period for the new ball isn’t going to take long. Just like how most professionals quickly made the switch and added distance when the original ProV1 was launched , it’s going to be the same thing except in the opposite direction.
Hirsh: It will be a huge adjustment. Guys will have to relearn what carries they can make on courses they know cold. Also lost in this is iron carry distance. It won’t be affected as much, but still significant when you consider how precise the best players in the world are.
Wall: Right, it will be an adjustment as pros begin to learn new carry yardages. These guys are essentially robots who know how to hit their number on a regular basis. When you add a level of uncertainty to those numbers, players will have to spend more time working with the new ball to dial in those numbers. Will it mean more range time and testing with the MLR ball? Absolutely. I expect the manufacturers who start working on a ball in earnest (if they haven’t already) and give guys ample time to figure out what those numbers will be ahead of 2026. I don’t expect it will be as big of a deal as some are making it out to be.
Marksbury: With as much time as these guys spend on the range, I can’t foresee the adjustment being much of an issue.
According to the USGA, the testing setup in the proposal is expected to reduce hitting distance by 14-15 yards on average for the longest hitters with the highest clubhead speeds. Do you think a shorter-flying ball will favor one player type over another?
Sens: It would be interesting to see if any tests have been done on whether slower swing speeds see disproportionate drops in distance. But generally speaking, I suspect what the USGA and R&A have said is true: The best players will remain the best players, and the biggest hitters will still be the biggest hitters, with distance working to their advantage.
Dethier: Again, strokes-gained data would suggest it could very marginally favor big hitters. But I think the decision is made to preserve golf courses on Tour, not short hitters on Tour.
Barath: The best players in the world will continue to be the best players in the world and, once again, I don’t see this creating any disruption when it comes to favoring player types beyond distance still being an advantage.
Hirsh: I wonder if there would be a scenario where someone is very good with the old ball and really struggles to adjust to the new ball or potentially even vice versa. I’m not going to try and predict what data will eventually tell us, but if distance is the only factor (and it probably won’t be), it should still favor long hitters. Rory McIlroy was quoted previously as saying he’d have a greater advantage if the ball was rolled back.
Wall: I think it’s too early to say if the ball will favor one player subset over another. We don’t even know how the ball will need to be constructed to conform to the rules of golf. Of course, if you’re forcing me to choose sides, I’d predict the longer/faster hitters will still be at an advantage. Guys likely Rory McIlroy continue to find ways to squeeze every ounce of distance out of their equipment. If you have a gear most of your peers simply don’t possess, you’d have to think that still gives you an edge over the competition.
Marksbury: The longest hitters have an advantage now, and they will with the new ball too. That said, the shorter hitters, who were perhaps hitting an 8- or 9-iron when their long-hitting peers hit a wedge, may now be hitting a 6- or 7-iron when the long guys still have a short-iron in hand. In my world, that’s a pretty big difference. But I guess we’ll have to see how it plays out.
I think the decision is made to preserve golf courses on Tour, not short hitters on Tour. Dylan Dethier
In a strongly worded statement Tuesday, Titleist — the game’s leading ball manufacturer — said the proposed rule would “divide golf” and create “confusion.” Do you agree? What kind of response would you expect at least some degree of bifurcation will draw from the general golf populous?
Sens: I don’t think there’s any doubt that the governing bodies are trying to do the right thing here, for the long-term good of the game. But as with so many well-intended policies in so many areas of life, I expect a lot of public outcry. People don’t like change. It’s a hard sell. And this change in particular — implementing a shorter-flying golf ball — is an easy one to market-message against.
Dethier: Call me naive but I love that every golfer plays by the same rules. This creates unnecessary grey area — what happens at your club championship? What happens when you’re playing with low-handicap buddies? Are we litigating golf balls on the first tee? I’m not anti-rollback but I haven’t warmed up to the idea of bifurcation.
Barath: I can respect their point of view, but also firmly disagree with the idea of creating confusion, especially considering this proposed rule change doesn’t impact recreational golfers. If you want to be a hero and show up to beer league softball with a wooden bat when everyone else is using a composite bat, go right ahead. As a lover of vintage gear, I can go out and play with persimmon clubs if I really want. The golf bubble might be filled with outcry for a short period of time, but in the long term, the carping will fade.
Hirsh: I 100% agree with Dylan. As someone who plays in amateur events and club championships but certainly not “elite” events, I have no idea what bifurcation will mean for me until it becomes clear who is adopting it. Still then, will I have to purchase two kinds of balls?
Wall: I’m with Barath on this one. People have been clamoring for a ball rollback for decades, so the outcry will undoubtedly be loudest at the outset. Assuming the proposal is put in place in 2026, I’d expect golfers to accept the “elite ball” and go on with their lives. No one is forcing weekend golfers to play the ball, to be clear. Yes, adding a ball for the pro circuit will add some confusion, at least initially. But similar to the wood-versus-aluminum bat analogy, I think golfers will ultimately decide on the ball they feel most comfortable using and go play.
Marksbury: I can foresee some confusion, at least at first. But the idea that this divides golf is a tougher sell. We can all play the same equipment the pros do, but many of us don’t, because it’s not best for our game. I think the ball will go the same way. Play the pro ball or don’t — whatever works for you!
Phew! Any parting thoughts we haven’t touched on?
Sens: We didn’t talk about sustainability, another issue the governing bodies have raised. For some observers, the big concern is protecting classic courses against the modern-bomber’s assault. But there’s more to this than whether Augusta will have to keep pulling its tees back. Look at what’s happening to the Colorado River as a sampling of the much bigger issue. All those courses in the Southwest need to get their water from somewhere. Something similar applies in many parts of the world, and across the golf industry as a whole.
Dethier: Ban golf tees (at the highest levels of the game) and let’s call it a day. That’s a joke — I think.
Barath: To go one step further, I think the rollback should apply to all levels of golf including recreational players. It’s really simple: If you still want to hit a shorter club into greens — move up a tee deck.
Hirsh: One thing I will agree on about the rollback is that it will make older, shorter courses safer in tournaments. I regularly play a course in qualifiers with doglegs at just the wrong distances, which make it unsafe. If players are hitting it 10 yards shorter, that course might become safer just because not as many players will bomb drives to spots where other groups will be.
Wall: What we’re failing to take into account are all the brilliant minds housed inside the OEM’s R&D buildings. Even if the USGA and R&A get their way, I can assure you the manufacturers will find ways to make these rollback changes obsolete. When the governing bodies implemented a groove rule, in 2010, to combat “bomb and gouge,” it didn’t take the OEMs long to find a new groove that added more spin in the long term. I expect this will be a repeat with the ball.
Marksbury: Tee it forward — love it, Ryan! Truly, golf has enough division to worry about these days. Let’s all take a deep breath and trust that everything is going to be okay.

2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks, sleepers: PGA Tour predictions, expert golf betting advice
Mike mcclure locked in his pga one and done golf picks, rankings and top sleepers for the arnold palmer invitational 2024 at arnold palmer's bay hill club & lodge in orlando.
The Florida swing on the PGA Tour schedule continues this week with the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando. As a signature event, the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational purse is $20 million, with the winner's share coming in at $4 million. Defending tournament champion Scottie Scheffler is the 6-1 favorite in the latest 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational odds. Other top contenders in the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational field include Rory McIlroy (17-2), Viktor Hovland (12-1), Xander Schauffele (14-1), Patrick Cantlay (16-1), Ludvig Åberg (20-1), Jordan Spieth (20-1), and Collin Morikawa (20-1).
As the defending tournament champion, should Scheffler be among your top targets in One and Done pools this week? Or should you target a long shot like Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, or Ricke Fowler? Before locking in your 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .
The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors, signature events, and big money tournaments critical.
McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks .
McClure nailed plenty of One and Done picks in 2023. At the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, McClure's top One and Done pick, Max Homa, outlasted the entire field to take home his sixth career PGA Tour victory and $1.566 million. At the WM Phoenix Open, McClure nailed Scheffler winning the tournament, taking home $3.6 million.
He correctly called Jon Rahm's wins at The Masters and the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Then at the RBC Canadian Open McClure listed Nick Taylor and Tyrrell Hatton as two of his top one and done picks. Taylor would go on to win the tournament, while Hatton finished in third place. And finally, at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, his top OAD pick was eventual tournament champion Rickie Fowler.
This season, one of his top OAD picks was for The American Express was Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600, and at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am his top pick was Scottie Scheffler, who finished in sixth place after the final round was cancelled due to weather. At the WM Phoenix Open, McClure recommended OAD players use Scheffler as their pick if they hadn't done so already this season. He ended up finishing in third place, taking home $519,200. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. Finally, at last week's Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place.
Now, McClure has dialed in on the Arnold Palmer Invitational golf tournament and just locked in his one and done picks and PGA predictions. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge in their One and Done pool. You can only see McClure's Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 one and done picks at SportsLine .
Top 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational One and Done picks
One of McClure's top one and done picks this week for the Arnold Palmer Invitational is Viktor Hovland. The 26-year-old Norwegian is a six-time winner on the PGA Tour, and is a threat to win any tournament he enters. In 2023, Hovland notched three outright wins before capping off his outstanding season by winning the FedEx Cup.
Hovland has a well-rounded game, ranking near the top of the PGA Tour in several key metrics. He has a relatively small sample size for 2024, but in 2023 Hovland ranked fifth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.412) and total driving, eighth in total strokes gained (1.648) and strokes gained off-the-tee (0.741), and 11th in strokes gained on approach (0.610). McClure knows Hovland excels against top flight fields and expects him to be in contention this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. You can see who else to back at SportsLine .
How to make Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 One and Done picks
McClure is also targeting another golfer for his 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks who was outstanding throughout the 2023 season. This former major championship winner has the ability to win any tournament he enters, and is one of the most talented golfers in this wide open field. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks at SportsLine .
Who wins the the Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024, and which golfers should you target for your PGA one and done picks this week? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 one and done picks, all from the DFS pro who called Nick Taylor's epic win at the RBC Canadian Open and Rickie Fowler's win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2023 , and find out.

8 BEST Tours in Samara, Costa Rica

Samara is the perfect destination to experience the pura vida in Costa Rica. This laid-back beach town is ideal for a relaxed getaway with friends or family, and it feels like a super safe place to visit in Costa Rica .
We’ve found this small town is definitely less touristy than other parts of the Guanacaste province . Luckily, there’s still tons to do here, thanks to all of the amazing nature and wildlife around. You can swim with dolphins, go kayaking through mangroves, or ride horses along the beautiful beach – the choice is yours!
There are many fun activities in Samara , but we think that some are best done as part of a tour. Sometimes this is for safety and practical reasons, like if you’re heading out on a boat or ATV. Other times, it’s simply because your guide can take you to secret wildlife hotspots you would never find on your own.
So if you want to see the top highlights along with some hidden gems, we’ve got you covered! During our time in Costa Rica, we’ve tried many tours here and found the 8 best tours in Samara. Read on so you can start planning all of the amazing activities you want to experience here!
Our Top Picks for Tours in Samara
If you don’t have time to read through all the choices and just want to book now, these are our top choices for tours in Samara!
Best bucket list-worthy tour: When we arrived in Costa Rica, seeing turtles was something we really wanted to do. Luckily, Samara is a great place for this! On this 3.5-hour turtle watching tour , you’ll see turtles nesting or even baby turtles hatching on the beach! It’s an evening tour and the local guides choose which beach to go to depending on where the turtles are. It’s only $57 USD including transportation and can be booked online year-round , although September/October are prime months.
Best combo tour: Don’t just stay on land, get out on the water in Samara! This 3-hour tour takes you to the best places to see dolphins! You’ll watch them play in the waves and also have a chance to spot turtles, stingrays, and whales. Then, it’s off to a prime snorkeling spot at Isla Chora to get up close with some of the amazing marine life. It’s really a 2-in-1 experience and at $58 USD is really affordable to book online too.
Why book a tour in Samara?
One of the best reasons to book a tour in Costa Rica – and more specifically, Samara – is that you get to see so much more wildlife that way. Some creatures are difficult to spot, but guides are so helpful for this. Plus, you find out so much more about what you’re seeing. In a country as biodiverse as Costa Rica, you come away from pretty much every tour having learned something fascinating.
Another reason to do a tour in Samara is that you can’t access all of the best activities here on foot, so having transportation taken care of is really nice. Some tourists rent scooters to get around, but understandably not everyone is comfortable with that.
We also found that the tours we did in Samara took us to places we wouldn’t have found on our own. For example, we discovered some amazing snorkel spots in Costa Rica that we wouldn’t have been able to get to otherwise.
Samara is pretty safe overall. But if it’s your first time in Costa Rica, you might feel more comfortable taking a tour. You’ll be with a local guide who ensures your safety throughout and makes sure you don’t venture off anywhere you shouldn’t.
Last but not least, we also found tours in Samara to be really good value for money! Most of the tours on this list cost less than $60 USD, so you really can’t go wrong.
What are the best tours in Samara, Costa Rica?
1. dolphin and snorkeling trip at isla chora national wildlife refuge.
One of the (many) amazing things about Costa Rica is that you can see dolphins all along its Pacific Coast. Samara is a fantastic place to go dolphin watching and it’s a really affordable activity here!
To access the best places for dolphin watching, I recommend taking this 3-hour tour . They pick you up around 8 am and head directly on a dolphin cruise. It’s such a beautiful way to start your morning and it’s hard not to smile when you see these playful creatures!
When we went, we loved watching the dolphins play in the waves, and we also saw turtles and stingrays. If you book this cruise between August and October, or December and April, you might spot some whales , too!
After the dolphin cruise, you’ll sail to Isla Chora , which is famed for its amazing snorkeling. We went snorkeling here and saw lots of marine life, including a turtle, pufferfish, and lots of pretty reef fish.
At $58 USD, we think that this tour is amazing value. You essentially get two tours in one! It’s also a great tour to do if you don’t have a lot of time in Samara but still want to experience its fantastic marine life. Snacks, snorkel equipment, and all transport are all included. There’s a maximum of 20 travelers, so it’s not too crowded, either!
If dolphin watching is at the top of your agenda, you’ll want to take this tour! You can pick your date and book it right here .

2. Horseback Riding on the Beach
Horseback riding is a super popular thing to do in Samara. Riding along the beach is just the perfect setting whether you’re honeymooning in Costa Rica or just looking for a unique activity.
We recommend this 2.5-hour horseback tour as the guides are great at encouraging you and showing you what to do if you’re a beginner. Rest assured, you don’t need any horse riding experience to enjoy this tour!
You’ll ride through the jungle in a small group of no more than eight and your guide will point out lots of flora and fauna along the way. You’ll almost certainly see monkeys scampering around! Your trusty steed will take you up a mountain to an amazing viewpoint where you can soak in the beauty of Samara’s wild landscape.
Then, you ride to a gorgeous beach where you can gallop along the shore and end your tour on a high. Riding horses along a stunning, deserted beach is something you only see in movies, and this is a rare opportunity to actually experience it in real life.
This tour is offered Mondays through Saturdays at 8 am and 3 pm. If you do the tour later in the afternoon, you will ride along the beach at sunset, which is such an amazing experience – we recommend doing this if you can!
The experience costs $55 USD per person, and there’s a minimum of two people per booking. The price includes hotel pickup and dropoff, and some photos and videos of the experience. It’s a fantastic price, but we’ve actually seen this tour offered for even cheaper. So, don’t hesitate to check prices for your dates online here !
3. Turtle Nesting Tour
If you’re anything like us, seeing turtles in Costa Rica is high on your list of things to do in the country . But on this 3.5-hour tour , you not only see turtles, you get to watch them nesting and hatching on the beach!
This really is the kind of experience that’s best done with a guide. They’ll know all of the hotspots for turtle activity and can teach you all about their life cycles. Plus, you may even see baby turtles crawling towards the sea like we did!
This tour will pick you up around 7 pm and take you to Corozalito or Camaronal Beach , depending on the conditions that day. However, if there’s an arribada happening in Ostional Beach (which is 1.5 hours from Samara), your tour will take you there for no extra cost. An arribada is a natural phenomenon when hundreds of turtles come ashore at once to lay their eggs. It’s an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime thing to see and a big pro of this tour as far as we’re concerned!
This turtle tour costs $57 USD per person, including your roundtrip transport and guide, as well as water, juice, and snacks along the way. The very best months to book are September and October, as this is prime turtle time in Samara. However, you can do it year-round, so don’t worry too much if you’re not here during these specific months.
If you’re an animal lover, you won’t want to miss this awesome opportunity! I recommend booking well in advance to secure your dates .

4. Mangrove Kayaking Tour
Costa Rica isn’t all beaches and rainforests! Mangroves are a super interesting ecosystem, and they just so happen to be really fun to kayak through.
This guided tour takes you down the Ora River, where you’ll kayak through the mangroves. To get an idea of what this looks like, just check out my photo above! Believe me, you’ll feel like an intrepid explorer as you spot monkeys, iguanas, and beautiful birds as you go.
You’ll also learn a lot about mangroves from your guide. Did you know that they’re basically environmental heroes and absorb 5-6 times as much CO2 as rainforests? We definitely didn’t before taking this tour!
Plus, kayaking along the Ora River is easy, thanks to the calm water. You don’t need to be a paddling pro with super strength to enjoy this tour. As such, it makes for a great family-friendly activity as well.
The kayaking tour costs $66 USD per adult and $47 USD per child (ages 4-10). It lasts for around 3 hours, and there’s a refreshment and fruit break midway through at a beach (where you might even spot turtles nesting if you’re lucky!). The tour covers all your kayaking equipment, including lifevests and roundtrip transportation from your Samara accommodation .
This is such a relaxing, gorgeous day outdoors that you can book directly through Viator .
Why We Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
- Free cancellation on most tours – Most of the tours on Viator allow you to cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours in advance. This is handy in case plans change, or if booking an outdoor activity, the weather forecast is looking grim.
- Reserve now and pay later – You can secure your spot on some of the most popular tours well in advance and not pay until closer to the day of the tour.
- Pay in your chosen currency – Avoid costly international transaction fees by choosing to pay in your home currency.
- Peace of mind – When booking with tour operators you find in person on the street or in small booking offices, you are often promised one thing and given another. This online platform holds tour operators accountable with a written description of inclusions as well as the opportunity for customers to leave reviews.
Check out the Viator website here !
5. Ocean Kayak and Snorkeling to Chora Island
We absolutely loved this kayaking tour to Chora Island ! We kayaked from Samara to Chora Island , which took about 30 minutes and was actually quite challenging. This was partly because the sea was choppy in sections but also because the sun was so hot. But honestly, it was all part of the adventure – and arriving at this stunning, secluded beach was a reward in itself!
Once we made it to Chora Island, we got to relax on the beach and cool off in the water. Chora Island is a pristine place, and you’ll probably have the whole beach to yourselves! Honestly, we were so happy to go ashore on this tour.
The snorkeling was the best part for us, though. The water was super clear, and we got to see turtles, puffer fish, and lots of other tropical fish. Plus, our guide was really helpful and knew tons about the marine life around the island.
This is a fantastic tour for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, and we highly recommend it. It costs $48 USD including all equipment, hotel pickup and drop off, as well as some snacks on the beach. It’s a great way to make the most of your time in Samara, and we would definitely do it again!
To experience this adventure for yourself, book this kayaking and snorkeling tour here !

6. Sunset and Wildlife ATV Tour
Samara has gorgeous coastal and mountain scenery, and you can explore it on this Sunset Quad Ride . Not only do you get to enjoy lots of natural beauty, but you also get a thrilling ATV experience!
You start in the mid-afternoon, and you quite literally get off the beaten track by exploring backroads and dirt trails. When we went, we saw a wild side of Samara that most people don’t experience. As you drive through the trees, keep an eye out for wildlife before reaching a breathtaking mountaintop viewpoint.
You’ll also drive to Barrigona Beach , which is one of the best beaches in Samara. It’s about 10 kilometers (6 miles) out of town, and you need an ATV or a 4WD to get down there. For this reason, it’s always super quiet, and the chances are you’ll be the only people there! This is one of the many reasons we love this tour !
You’ll have time to swim here if you want to, although there is a large swell, so you might just prefer to chill on the white sand instead. The tour ends with a visit to a quiet sunset spot where you’ll have epic views of the vivid sunset over the ocean. Talk about ending on a high!
You’ll need to present your passport and a valid driver’s license to participate in this tour (since you actually drive on the roads). It runs year-round, including during the rainy season. However, we actually love ATV rides at this time of year because, believe it or not, the mud makes it even more fun. Regardless of when you visit Costa Rica , this tour delivers!
Kids as young as 5 can participate, and there are double and single ATVs available. A single ATV costs $124 USD per person, while a double costs $162 USD. Book this ATV adventure to experience it all … jungles, mountains, beaches, and an unforgettable sunset.
7. Safari and Buenavista Beach Horse Riding Tour
This horseback safari is an incredible way to explore the natural beauty of the Guanacaste province . You start with a boat ride, during which your captain will give you an introduction to the area’s unique flora and fauna.
Once you arrive at the trailhead, you’ll meet your horse and guide and head off to explore the jungle. You’ll see monkeys, birds, reptiles, and maybe even some crocodiles – but don’t worry, it’s from a safe distance on horseback!
There are also several river crossings along the way, which are fun to navigate. Then, you end up on Buenavista Beach . You get to ride along the beach and paddle in the waves, which really is an amazing, bucket list-worthy experience (unless you’re allergic to horses like Bailey!).
You head back to the meeting point via an easy ride through some fields, which are home to wild horses and cows. The whole thing lasts about 2.5 hours which feels like the perfect amount to traverse this terrain on horseback.
Overall, this tour is a lot of fun, and the trails are nice and easy. It really doesn’t matter if you’ve never ridden before! The guides are also really friendly and will even fetch you fresh coconuts from the trees if you get thirsty.
The experience costs $59 USD, and kids as young as 5 can participate (as long as they’re accompanied by an adult). There’s a maximum of 5 travelers per group, so it’s a really nice, small group. Hotel pickup and drop off aren’t included for this tour, but the meeting point is easy to get to via a scooter or local taxi.
Those who love riding horses (or want an easy introduction!) won’t want to miss this tour. Check availability and reserve your dates online here !
8. Werner Sauter Biological Reserve Hike
The Werner Sauter Biological Reserve is one of the best places to see wildlife in Samara. It’s a private reserve with gorgeous mountain trails that give you epic views over the town’s beautiful beaches.
This small group tour will pick you up from town and take you to the park, where you’ll begin a 2.5-hour guided hike through the reserve. The hiking is fairly easy and as you go, your guide will teach you all about the tropical dry forest and why it’s such an important ecosystem for Costa Rica’s wildlife .
On our visit, we discovered why this type of forest is so threatened, and we gained an even deeper appreciation for its beauty. We also saw loads of incredible native animals, including parrots, monkeys, butterflies, deer, and iguanas.
On this guided tour , you’ll also pass through an organic mango plantation. If you’re hungry, you can help yourself to the fresh mangoes. I mean, talk about a rewarding hike!
There are two options for the hike – a morning tour at 6:30 am for $47 USD and an afternoon tour at 2:30 pm for $42 USD. For both options, there’s a maximum of 10 people per group. We love that it’s a nice, small tour because you get more personalized attention and can ask questions about what you’re seeing. To secure your preferred time and date, we recommend booking this tour in advance .

Where to Stay in Sámara, Costa Rica
Sámara is one of those towns with a huge variety of places to stay. From budget backpacker hostels to luxury hotels, there are great accommodations in Sámara for all budgets. To help you narrow it down, we’ve included our favorites below.
Leyenda Boutique Hotel & Spa – $$$
For luxury travelers or families, I love Leyenda Boutique Hotel & Spa . This place is spectacular and offers a fitness center, swimming pool, spa, and restaurant. On top of that, it’s located right just over a mile from the beach. From standard double rooms, to family suites to suites with a whirlpool there is an option for couples and groups alike.
Guests seem to love the property’s landscapes and service the most! Prices start at $247 USD which is amazing for a high-end option – so check prices and reserve a luxury room or suite here !
Mid-range – $$
Hotel entre dos aguas – $$.
If you consider yourself a mid-range traveler, then I have a great choice for you that caters to couples. Hotel Entre Dos Aguas is a rustic hotel with simple amenities on a beautiful property. Perfect for those who want a true Costa Rican stay.
All of the rooms have private showers, and some of the rooms have a terrace. You can check availability and book online here on Booking.com .
Las Mariposas – $
If you’re on a budget, there are lots of options, but not many of them are good. Las Mariposas is my top choice, with its location close to the beach. The hostel has a great atmosphere for meeting other travelers and is suited to the social backpacker. They offer a shared kitchen and common spaces, hammocks to relax on the patio, billiards, and karaoke.
A bed in a shared dorm runs about $12 USD, while private rooms start at $30 USD. You can book this place on Hostelworld or Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica
How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.
Renting a Car
Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.
One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.
Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.
Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.
You can browse cars on Discover Cars here .
Book Shuttles
If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.
Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)
To get the best price, use the website Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!
You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.
Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!
The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!
It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.
Invest in Travel Insurance
Paying out of pocket for trip interruptions or medical treatment will add to what might already be a stressful situation. We always travel with SafetyWing travel medical insurance.
The best part is that it costs only a fraction of what most insurance policies charge, which makes it perfect for digital nomads, long-term travelers (like us), and budget travelers. It only costs $45 USD per 4 weeks!
To start coverage, you must purchase it after leaving your home country. We usually purchase it as soon as we land at the airport.
Since using SafetyWing we’ve been reimbursed thousands of dollars when we’ve gotten sick. During the pandemic, they’ve even gone as far as to pay for our last-minute flights back to Canada from Colombia before the border closed!
You can click here to get a quote and read all the details !
Samara is the perfect beach town to relax and bask in gorgeous natural scenery. This place is more off-the-beaten-path than other tourist destinations, which is why we recommend tours here! Whether you choose to ride horses, drive ATVs, or kayak through mangroves, you’ll have an incredible time.
If you found this article helpful, read our other blogs about Costa Rica . We’ve traveled all over this country, and we even lived here for a while. We love sharing what we’ve learned so you can have an amazing trip as well.

Golfers love places where warm, sunny weather and a spectrum of after-golf amenities and activities await. Puerto Rico checks those boxes and more.
An array of lodging and restaurant options beckon, as do after-golf activities. The lush tropical foliage, expansive beaches and ever-present island spirit ensure visitors know they’re in a special place.
The golf destination is filled with 18 unique courses and numerous resorts. It’s so good that many of the game’s top brands and governing bodies choose Puerto Rico to hold championships.
USGA, PGA TOUR, The R&A and Augusta National conduct or have backed events in Puerto Rico.
“Puerto Rico is ideally suited for golf getaways thanks to the award-winning courses, variety of hotels and resorts, and of course our welcoming people, eager to share their ‘Boricua’ essence,” said Leah Chandler, chief marketing officer, Discover Puerto Rico.
The Island requires no passport from American citizens and offers over 125 daily flights into San Juan (SJU) and other airports. A U.S. territory, Puerto Rico’s bilingual culture and people use U.S. currency.
Island courses are thrilling and scenic. Several rate among the top 50 in the Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Atlantic Islands. They offer a plethora of options with price, terrain and designs from some of the game’s greats – Chi Chi Rodriguez, Tom Fazio, Rees Jones, Gary Player and Robert Trent Jones.
El Yunque rain forest can be seen from several Puerto Rico golf courses, including Grand Reserve Golf Club’s Championship Course, where the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open is played annually. Likewise, it dominates views from the Ocean and River courses at Rio Mar Country Club.
Switching stunning geological features and breathtaking ocean views await at Royal Isabela and Punta Borinquen, both perched atop promontories in the Northwest. TPC Dorado Beach, St. Regia Bahia Beach, Costa Caribe, Wyndham Palmas Resort and Palmas Athletic Club also hug the ocean, with holes adjacent to sun-kissed beaches and teal-colored surf.
Warm welcomes (“Bienvenidos”) are ubiquitous in Puerto Rico. With dozens of distinct municipalities, each with their own flavor, interesting places to golf and relax abound.
The island’s golf venues include:
- Dorado Beach (36 holes) – 787-626-1020

About Two Door Cinema Club:
Two Door Cinema Club mix guitar-driven post-punk hooks with dancey, electronic polish. They first gained attention with their 2010 debut album Tourist History and singles ‘Something Good Can Work’ and ‘Undercover Martyn’. The band have continued to evolve, peaking at #2 in the UK’s official Albums Chart with 2012’s Beacon , and experimenting with Giorgio Moroder-esque disco and synth pop on 2016’s Gameshow . The album also hit the UK Top 10 and paved the way for 2019’s new wave-inspired False Alarm and 2022’s Keep On Smiling .
Hailing from Bangor and Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, Two Door Cinema Club comprises lead vocalist, guitarist and programmer Alex Trimble, guitarist and vocalist Sam Halliday, and bassist and vocalist Kevin Baird. The trio began playing as Two Door Cinema Club in 2007 and continue to stand the test of time in 2024 and beyond.
With a back catalogue of five hugely successful records, sold out shows and headline festival slots across the globe, the band returned last year in 2023 with new single ‘Sure Enough’, alongside brand new U.S tour dates and additional UK arena dates in Hull, Doncaster and Liverpool. This year sees the band return to the Main Stage at Reading and Leeds Festival for a seventh time since their debut set on the NME/Radio 1 tent back in 2010.

If you are looking for a truly special experience, consider taking a turtle nesting tour. Embark on an unforgettable journey and witness the magical sight of thousands of turtles laying their eggs. Learn about their incredible hatching process and how conservation efforts are helping protect these fascinating creatures in the wild.
What We Do on our Turtle Tour
Activities: Many of these marine enclaves are considered to be key environments where four species of sea turtles can be found—the Green Sea Turtle, Leatherback, Hawksbill, and Olive Ridley — along with other local wildlife.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Meeting Point: We pick you up.
Choose between one of the two beaches below:
- Camaronal Refuge
- Ostional National Park
Just one hour south of Samara Beach you can find Camaronal Beach where every night between June and December, the Olive Ridley sea turtles come to nest in small but consistent numbers (not more than 20).
We stay roughly an hour, giving us plenty of time to observe them nesting and see them returning into the sea.
Start time: 5 pm, but this time may be affected by the tides.
Duration: 3 hours
$50 /person
At Ostional Beach, turtles are seen only 4 -6 days each month from June to December, following a crescent lunar cycle, during which time sightings are registered during the day and night.
Daytime sightings have the distinct advantage of sunlight giving tourists the ability to take wonderful photos, which is not allowed during the dark.
Playa Ostional is almost two hours from Playa Samara. The trip includes a couple of river crossings.
Start time: early in the morning or in the afternoon
Duration: 4-5 hours
Minimum 4 persons
$70 /person

Bug repellent, solid footwear, frequently asked questions, what is the best time to see turtles in costa rica.
The best time to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of turtles nesting in Costa Rica is during the nesting season, which typically runs from July to November. Different species of turtles, such as the Olive Ridley, Leatherback, and Green turtles, make their way to the country’s pristine beaches to lay their eggs. Witnessing these gentle giants emerge from the ocean and lay their eggs under the moonlit sky is an unforgettable experience, and it’s essential to plan your turtle tour during this season to increase your chances of encountering these magnificent creatures.
When Do Turtles Hatch in Costa Rica?
After the nesting season, the next natural wonder unfolds as the baby turtles start hatching and making their way back to the ocean. This remarkable event generally occurs from September to January. The exact timing can vary slightly depending on the species and environmental factors. The emergence of tiny turtle hatchlings is a heartwarming sight, and witnessing their determined journey toward the water, and overcoming various obstacles is a truly memorable moment. Join us during this time for a turtle tour that allows you to observe and support these adorable creatures as they embark on their life’s incredible adventure.
Where to See Turtles in Costa Rica?
If you’re looking for the best places to witness the awe-inspiring nesting and hatching of turtles in Costa Rica, look no further than the Ostional Wildlife Refuge and Camaronal.
Ostional Wildlife Refuge: Situated on the Nicoya Peninsula, the refuge is renowned for its incredible “arribadas.” These mass nesting events feature thousands of Olive Ridley turtles coming ashore simultaneously to lay their eggs. Witnessing this natural wonder is an unforgettable experience, and it occurs from July to November.
Camaronal: Another fantastic destination for turtle enthusiasts is Camaronal, located on the Pacific coast. This protected beach is a crucial nesting site for various turtle species, including Olive Ridley, Leatherback, and occasionally, the majestic Green turtles. The nesting season at Camaronal typically takes place from September to January.
Both the Ostional Wildlife Refuge and Camaronal offer a unique opportunity to observe and support these gentle creatures during their nesting and hatching seasons. Our turtle tours to these beaches are designed to provide you with an insightful and responsible experience, while also contributing to the conservation efforts to protect these vulnerable marine species and their habitats.
