12 Best Tourist Places in Kozhikode (Calicut)

12 Best Tourist Places in Kozhikode (Calicut)

Kozhikode is a beautiful coastal town, on the Malabar coast of India, in the state of Kerala. Also known as Calicut, the town is a pristine haven in nature, filled with lush greenery, tranquil beaches, and historical forts. It is known for having one of the most beautiful backwaters of Kerala and serves as a charming weekend getaway for the locals and nearby travellers. And for the beach lovers, the clean and untouched beaches of the city are truly irresistible. If you are in the mood to take a break from the busy lifestyle and enjoy the serene calmness of nature, then Kozhikode is the place for you. From stunning waterfalls to religious places, pristine beaches and natural beauty all around, Kozhikode is surely one place you wouldn’t want to miss on your Kerala tour package .

It is a peaceful city with the vast Arabian Sea on the west and the peaks of Wayanad hill on the east. If history is to be believed, Vasco-da-Gama first set his foot in India at Kozhikode when the Spice Route was established. This is the reason Kozhikode, or Calicut, was earlier known by yet another name, the City of Spices. The city also served as a mighty seaport in the world where traders from Arabia, China, and Africa once converged. With such a rich history it should come as no surprise that there is an abundance of things to do in Calicut, as well as some of the best places to visit in Kerala .

Best Time To Visit Kozhikode

Today, Kozhikode is the third-largest city of Kerala and draws tourists throughout the year due to its vast tourist attractions and pleasant weather. The best time to visit the beautiful places in Kozhikode is during the months of October to March. The weather during these months is pleasant and habitable for tourists, as compared to other months.

Summers in the city are too hot and humid, with temperatures ranging between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. Winter months are the most favourable for vacations in the city of Kozhikode and sightseeing as the climate remains quite pleasant during this time, and the minimum temperature dips up to 15 degrees Celsius on some days.

Good food, friendly people and great opportunities to explore and enjoy God’s own country, that’s Kozhikode in a nutshell. The city is not just a great spot to spend time with your friends and family but is also a splendid honeymoon destination where you can spend a great time with your better half. The Best Films That Take Place All in One Crazy 24 Hours: ‘After Hours,’ ‘Before Sunrise,’ and More

What comes “After Hours” but “Before Sunrise”? Well, one wild day.

The niche yet beloved genre of films that take place over the course of a mere 24 hours is a market all on its own. Sure, people fall in love over the span of a day (there’s a whole Netflix series titled “One Day” that hinges on that essential belief, repeated over and over again), and oftentimes even people fall  out  of love with their ideals over the course of merely a few hours, like in “Do the Right Thing.” Robberies take place (“Dog Day Afternoon”), high school is graduated (“Booksmart”), and even death sentences are doled out (“Cléo from 5 to 7”).

The stunningly cinematic experience of having just the “one day at a time” phrase come to life onscreen feels as though it’s playing out almost in real-time. These adventures could be attainable, whether you want them to be or not. These heartbreaks, these realizations, and yes, even just this  living from moment to moment , is truly what the inspiration of cinema is about. The one day conceit is so malleable that the Criterion Channel is currently hosting a collection of films that take place during one night, featuring titles as diverse as “Night of the Living Dead,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” and “Before Sunrise.”

From director Richard Linklater, “Before Sunrise” ended up spurring a trilogy starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The mostly improvised films were made as a reaction to the bombastic nature of blockbusters, with  Hawke recalling Linklater telling him , “I don’t want you to worry too much about the script. I’m inviting you to be a filmmaker with me. My whole life I’ve gone to the movies and there’s espionage and shootouts and helicopters, all this action. Everything that I see is all this drama, [so much so] that you would think my life, our lives, have no drama. That’s not the way I feel. My life feels very exciting to me and I’ve never been involved in a chase or a gun shootout. My life is exciting to me. And what’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me? Connecting with another human being…If we can put that onscreen I think people will care.”

Those connections, regardless of how big or small, are what makes the 24-hour movie the perfect snippet of humanity. See our full list of the best films that take place over the course of a day below.

Best places to see the April 8 solar eclipse in the totality path

A merica is gearing up for the April 8 total solar eclipse , and in less than a week many will be scrambling to find the best location to watch within the path of totality. Meteorologists are closely monitoring the latest models, and while it won't be until a few days prior to the event that the national forecast will be fully cooked, historical data suggests those hoping to view the corona and see a fully darkened midday sky may find themselves dodging clouds due to April weather patterns.

The last time a total solar eclipse traversed an elongated path across the continental U.S. — on Aug. 21, 2017 — Americans could be caught gazing at the midday dark from Oregon all the way to South Carolina. Most spots along the path of totality enjoyed reasonably clear, summer skies.

Those living or visiting along the path of totality next week may not end up so fortunate, as historical weather maps show the odds of experiencing a cloud-free sky at this time of year are somewhat less than ideal. In fact, finding a totally clear view at any given time is closer to the exception than the rule.

"According to NASA, at any given time, 70% of the earth is covered in clouds," said Mike Augustyniak , CBS Minnesota director of meteorology.

Not only is North America in the middle of the volatility of changing seasons during this year's solar event, but meteorologists note that we're also currently in an El Niño pattern, albeit one that's proven quieter than usual.

"An El Niño pattern tends to increase the chances of cloudy, rainy weather in those areas. Interestingly, though, that is not how this winter and spring have played out," said Augustyniak. "Since the start of 2024, Texas Hill Country and western Texas areas have been markedly drier than average; if that trend holds for the next few weeks, that would be good news for eclipse watchers."

The path of totality is only about 150 miles wide, and in America stretches roughly 2,500 miles from the Texas border to the last few towns in northeastern Maine. That leaves only so many places where you can seek the full show, though the path's width will be significantly wider than it was in 2017, according to NASA , as the moon will to be closer to Earth on this pass than it was then.

So will April showers bring spectator flowers? Here's a breakdown of which places along the path of totality are most likely to give eclipse chasers the best odds.

Viewing the eclipse in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas

Augustyniak said at this transitional time of year, the further south you can go, the more likely you are to experience clear skies during eclipse totality.

"Of the areas where the total eclipse will be visible on April 8, that includes the Hill Country of Texas, and the Mexican states of Coahuila and Durango," Augustyniak said.

Of course, the further south you get, the more you increase your chances of running into not only clouds, but rain.

"Spring is our storm season of course," said Jeff Ray , chief meteorologist for CBS Texas.

Ray said that you can almost bet on needing to do a little bit of reverse storm-chasing — in other words, doing some last-minute navigation to dart away from the oncoming clouds, rather than toward them — on or around the eclipse in Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

"There will be storms around the day of April 8. I say that because we rarely get through a week in spring without a couple of rounds coming through the area during this time of the year. Will they arrive a day before and be gone? Not start up until later that day? Maybe two days later? We are looking at our long-range model the GFS for the date and it looks like storms on the eighth," Ray said, with a caveat. "Long-range models are notoriously inaccurate for a specific day. But there is a good chance the storms the model sees will materialize, give or take a 36-hour period."

Ray said that Texas sees, on average, a sunny or mostly sunny April day only about 28% of the time. Conversely, the region gets April days with mostly cloudy or fully overcast conditions about 36% of the time.

"High clouds can arrive several days before the storm system, they are overhead in April around 22% of the time. A sky with some kind of cloud cover is likely," said Ray. "A typical April day would have near overcast skies in the morning, then the heating of the day makes for more sunshine. So an afternoon even has better odds of a good view of the eclipse."

The eclipse will reach totality in Texas from about 1:30 p.m. CT near Elm Creek until wrapping up near the Oklahoma border a few minutes before 2 p.m. Some of the most populous areas along the path of totality will be during this leg, from San Antonio and Austin to Dallas-Fort Worth.

One final factor to consider if you're heading to the area — tornadoes. Ray said that the National Weather Office in Fort Worth has tallied all the confirmed tornadoes since 1880, and in April and May, north Texas has seen more than 1,100 twisters, compared with the nearly 900 seen in all other months.

"So more tornadoes in the 61-day window than all of the other days of the year combined," Ray said, "but the tornado count varies greatly from year to year."

Ultimately, Ray said that April is traditionally the third-stormiest month of the year in Texas.

"In short, April is not the best, nor the worst, time of the year to hope for clear or mostly clear skies. The best would be July or August. The worst would be January or February," he said. "We get a decent idea of the expected weather about seven days out. Four days out we get more comfortable talking about the timing of a rain or storm event. But it's the weather, we are trying to throw a lasso around chaos. It is not rare we forecasters look like fools."

Viewing the eclipse in Missouri, southern Illinois and Indiana

While many are likely to head as far south as possible, some of the biggest cities in the Midwest are likely to fuel day-of migration to spots in Missouri and Illinois, many of them likely seeing a total eclipse for the second time in a decade. A small zone centered around Carbondale, Illinois, was along the path of totality in 2017, and will be once again this month.

While those in the St. Louis area seeking areas to watch in southeastern Missouri will find historical odds for cloud-free viewing roughly comparable to Arkansas, and those in the Chicago metro area should find their best bet is to head toward the southern part of Illinois.

"If you're unable to travel (to Texas or Arkansas), then Southern Illinois and Indiana present your best opportunity for a clearer sky, supported by the 43-year average and, of course, weather permitting," said Albert Ramon , chief meteorologist for CBS Chicago.

There will likely be some who decide that 90% or 95% totality is enough for them. But Ramon warns that those in the Chicago metro area could be at a higher risk to find their view obscured by clouds.

"Based on a comprehensive 43-year average , April 8 typically brings cloud cover chances ranging from 60 to 80% across Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, with similar patterns observed in Indianapolis, where cloud cover hovers between 60 to 70%," Ramon said.

Viewing the eclipse near the Great Lakes and Pennsylvania

Ramon said another factor that could make viewing along the path of totality something of a challenge in the Midwest is the lingering influence of an El Niño weather pattern.

"Its presence elevates the chances of clouds across the Midwest and Great Lakes regions," Ramon said. "This year may even be a bit more cloudier than the normal."

The Great Lakes portion of totality's path includes large sections of Ohio, including Cleveland, along with the area of Ontario south of Toronto, Niagara Falls, and Erie, Pennsylvania. CBS Pittsburgh meteorologist Ray Petelin said many of these areas are subject to the wildcard that is the Great Lakes.

"They are known for lake-effect snow, but it is the lake-effect clouds that could hide the eclipse. Erie, which is in the path of totality, averages only six clear days during the month of April. Pittsburgh, which has the potential to see around 97% of totality, only averages four clear days in April," Petelin said.

Petelin says that a southerly breeze and warmer-than-average temperatures would go a long way toward helping the Great Lakes region out on April 8.

"While the historical data suggests the chances for a clear day are low, this winter and early spring have been exceptionally bright and warmer than usual. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we can get that perfect weather for when it matters most," Petelin said.

As it stands, the areas near the shores of the Great Lakes historically show a higher probability for clearer skies than areas inland.

Viewing the eclipse in New England

The eclipse will wrap up its march across the U.S. when the path of totality cuts across state lines from New York to Vermont just before 3:30 p.m. ET. By this point in the event, the duration of totality along the central line will have already fallen off from its peak — about 4 minutes, 30 seconds near Nazas, Mexico — to just over 3 minutes, 30 seconds, according to NASA.

"The southern edge of the totality line passes right through the towns of Middlebury, Northfield and Barre. You will need to get just north of these areas. Some suggested 'larger' towns include Montpelier, St. Johnsbury, Newport and Burlington," said Terry Eliasen , executive weather producer for CBS Boston.

In New Hampshire, the southern edge of totality will pass just north of the White Mountains. And in Maine, you'll need to get north of major cities like Portland, Augusta and Bangor. Eliasen said the entirety of Baxter State Park will be in the totality path, including Mount Katahdin.

The bad news: Eliasen said that those in the New England area face possibly the stiffest odds in the country for catching clear skies next Monday, based on historical patterns. The data says you're more likely to be negatively impacted by clouds pretty much anywhere in these three states than not.

"Frankly, northern New England is probably the worst place (historically speaking) in the path of totality as far as cloud cover goes," said Eliasen. "Of course, we could get lucky."

No luck? There's always the 2045 total solar eclipse

As a last-ditch hope for those who opt to stay put no matter where they're located, there's one last meteorological ace-in-the-hole that could offer reprieve, one fueled by the astronomical event itself.

"It's worth noting that, as totality approaches and sunlight is reduced, temperatures are likely to fall noticeably. Cooler temperatures can stabilize the atmosphere – like when the sun sets after a hot summer day – leading to a decrease in cloud cover," said Augustyniak. "Still, your best plan is to find an area that has no clouds to begin with."

And if the clouds end up sullying the view for some this month, another chance comes around in August 2045 , when a line of totality will stretch from northern California all the way to Miami Beach. Which, of course, will fall during the height of hurricane season.

A Proclamation on Transgender Day of Visibility,   2024

On Transgender Day of Visibility, we honor the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and reaffirm our Nation’s commitment to forming a more perfect Union — where all people are created equal and treated equally throughout their lives.

I am proud that my Administration has stood for justice from the start, working to ensure that the LGBTQI+ community can live openly, in safety, with dignity and respect.  I am proud to have appointed transgender leaders to my Administration and to have ended the ban on transgender Americans serving openly in our military.  I am proud to have signed historic Executive Orders that strengthen civil rights protections in housing, employment, health care, education, the justice system, and more.  I am proud to have signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law, ensuring that every American can marry the person they love.

Transgender Americans are part of the fabric of our Nation.  Whether serving their communities or in the military, raising families or running businesses, they help America thrive.  They deserve, and are entitled to, the same rights and freedoms as every other American, including the most fundamental freedom to be their true selves.  But extremists are proposing hundreds of hateful laws that target and terrify transgender kids and their families — silencing teachers; banning books; and even threatening parents, doctors, and nurses with prison for helping parents get care for their children.  These bills attack our most basic American values:  the freedom to be yourself, the freedom to make your own health care decisions, and even the right to raise your own child.  It is no surprise that the bullying and discrimination that transgender Americans face is worsening our Nation’s mental health crisis, leading half of transgender youth to consider suicide in the past year.  At the same time, an epidemic of violence against transgender women and girls, especially women and girls of color, continues to take too many lives.  Let me be clear:  All of these attacks are un-American and must end.  No one should have to be brave just to be themselves.

At the same time, my Administration is working to stop the bullying and harassment of transgender children and their families.  The Department of Justice has taken action to push back against extreme and un-American State laws targeting transgender youth and their families and the Department of Justice is partnering with law enforcement and community groups to combat hate and violence.  My Administration is also providing dedicated emergency mental health support through our nationwide suicide and crisis lifeline — any LGBTQI+ young person in need can call “988” and press “3” to speak with a counselor trained to support them.  We are making public services more accessible for transgender Americans, including with more inclusive passports and easier access to Social Security benefits.  There is much more to do.  I continue to call on the Congress to pass the Equality Act, to codify civil rights protections for all LGBTQI+ Americans.

Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans:  You are loved.  You are heard.  You are understood.  You belong.  You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. Solar eclipse 2024: Latest forecast is looking cloudy for some in path of totality

There's just five days to go until the total solar eclipse . Meteorologists continue to refine their cloud cover forecasts for the big day, and as of Wednesday, it's a mix of good and bad news, depending on your location. More about that in a moment.

On Monday afternoon, April 8, a total eclipse of the sun will cross over a dozen states as it traverses from Texas to Maine.  Millions of people are expected to travel  to see it.

The  full total solar eclipse experience  will plunge people along a narrow path into darkness midday, but people outside  the path of totality  can still use eclipse glasses (maybe  free eclipse glasses ) to see the moon pass in front of the sun — if it's not blocked by clouds.

Meanwhile, those planning to order glasses online may be rapidly  running out of time  to do so in order to have them delivered  on time .

Here's the latest news about the 2024 total solar eclipse on April 8 :

Where will skies be clear for the total eclipse?

First, the good news. "Clear skies in the path of totality are most likely in northern New England and upstate New York, and possible in Arkansas and Missouri," the Weather Prediction Center , a branch of the National Weather Service, said Tuesday afternoon.

The weather service forecast office in Burlington, Vermont , also gave this optimistic outlook: "The forecast for Monday is looking spectacular across the North Country (of Vermont)." The weather service calls for "great viewing conditions, as mostly clear skies are now in the forecast around eclipse time."

Texas solar eclipse forecast is troublesome

The forecast worsens the farther south and west you go.

"Cloud cover in the path of totality is most likely in south-central Texas, as well as portions of the Ohio Valley, including Indiana, Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania," the Weather Prediction Center said.

AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said, "Most places in the vicinity of the path of totality will have to deal with some level of clouds, whether high or low."

The weather service forecast office in Dallas-Ft. Worth was slightly more upbeat about the type of clouds that will be in the area on Monday: "The forecast for Eclipse Day continues to be cloudy, however, not all hope is lost!," the weather service said. "Widespread upper cloud cover is likely, but dense low clouds look less likely! There is a medium chance of partial visibility across parts of North and Central Texas."

Will clouds really ruin the eclipse?

Clouds are just part of weather, and as noted in the latest forecast, it's likely that some of the millions of people  in the path of totality for April's total eclipse  will have to  endure overcast skies that will impact the experience .

But determining how clouds would change your view depends on the types of clouds – and which expert you ask. Some advise eclipse watchers to not worry about the skies, others say an overcast sky can ruin the experience.

Before last year's annular solar eclipse, National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Daldrup told  Oregon Public Radio  that if clouds are in the forecast, you should hope for the "right kind of clouds."

“If we want to see it, we’ll want the higher-level clouds,” Daldrup told OPR. “Those tend to be the more feathery cirrus clouds that can still be seen through. They might obstruct the eclipse but you can still see it.”

Cirrus clouds would be in contrast to some of the more eclipse-unfriendly clouds, such as a thick deck of lower-level stratus or cumulus clouds that would likely completely block the sun.

Order eclipse glasses online now to have them delivered on time

If you're planning to be among the millions of people in the United States who will witness  the spectacular sight  on April 8, having a proper pair of glasses  is paramount : The sun's rays will  pose a danger to unprotected retinas  gazing skyward.

If you're buying your specs through American Paper Optics, the nation's largest supplier of eclipse glasses, the company makes it easy for you with  a countdown at the top of its website  for how much longer you have to procrastinate. As of Wednesday morning , customers have little more than two days to make their purchase and take advantage of the company's  express shipping  across the country.

That's about the same amount of time allotted to  Walmart+ online shoppers , as well as Prime members looking for reputable  glasses on Amazon .

Many eclipse websites like  GreatAmericanEclipse.com  and  NationalEclipse.com  also sell a variety of eyewear products, along with plenty of other gadgets — but double check that estimated delivery date before checking out.

What is the path of totality and why does it matter?

This eclipse is all about totality. But what is it? Basically, totality is when the moon totally blocks the sun during a  total solar eclipse .

The  path of totality  is the area where people on Earth can see  the moon completely cover the sun  as the moon's shadow falls upon them. In the U.S., the path of totality of this eclipse stretches from Texas to Maine.

To view all of the stages of a total solar eclipse, you must watch it from somewhere along that path of totality, NASA said. Viewers outside this narrow, roughly 115-mile wide path will only see a partial eclipse of the sun.

If you're not in the path of totality, hundreds of millions of people across the nation will still be able to view the partial eclipse, weather permitting: "The best locations for viewing can be the Southwest and the East, especially east of the Appalachians," AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said. "Cities like El Paso, Albuquerque, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York City and Raleigh should all have great views."

"The area from West Texas to southern Arizona should also have favorable viewing conditions," Pastelok added. "These areas will be close to the path of totality with the least amount of cloud cover anticipated."

Is the April 2024 eclipse safe for pets?

An  eclipse  itself isn't dangerous for domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but experts say it's probably best to not bring pets to  experience the April 2024 total solar eclipse .

Experts' biggest concern is not what’s happening in the sky but on the ground as crowds of excited and  anxious people gather , said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Rather than the effects of the eclipse, I would be more worried about the excitement and all of the people,” she said.

Dogs especially will take their cues from their owners rather than the celestial event.

Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinarian of the American Kennel Club, said dogs that are sensitive, that have anxiety or are strongly affected by storms are likely to pick up on the emotions of people gathering to watch the eclipse

That’s especially true for pet owners who might be  traveling a long distance to see the eclipse .

How are schools are handling the total solar eclipse

Local governments and organizations have been bracing for months to accommodate the millions of Americans hoping to witness the eclipse.

Amongst those planning for the special day are schools , especially those in states in the  path of totality . A lot of  foresight  and logistics go into managing excitement around such a rare event, and school districts across the  13 states in the eclipse's path  have been prepping their students, parents and educators well in advance.

States and districts are taking different approaches: some will dismiss students early or close entirely, while others will find ways to incorporate the celestial event into the day's curriculum.

Schools in each state are handling the rare event in their own way, but one thing widely agreed upon by both educators and parents alike – the eclipse is a rare and exciting teaching opportunity.

Traffic likely to be snarled

Experts warn the eclipse excitement could create dangerous and busy traffic conditions as people pack into the narrow band of the country with the best view.

"Pack your patience, whether traveling a great distance or locally, people will be out and about to catch a glimpse of the eclipse," said Aixa Diaz, a spokesperson for the American Automobile Association.

Roads could be especially packed at the  center of the eclipse's path  as Americans who  want the best view  crowd into cities, towns and remote areas, many without the infrastructure to handle big crowds.

In Ohio's Lorain County, county officials are warning residents to be aware about the increase in visitors, traffic and jammed roads — and possible cell phone signal drops.

“What we could have is crowds here that we’re not used to,” said Dave Freeman, the director of Lorain County Emergency Management. “We’re not set up infrastructure-wise for that, we don’t have the roads.”

How to photograph a solar eclipse with your cell phone

You'll need to have the right solar filter in front of your cellphone camera to protect both your device  and eyesight , according to Carly Stocks, a Utah-based astronomical photographer who talked to USA TODAY.

The filter must be  made specifically for solar viewing , Stocks said. She also emphasized the need to place a filter that is larger than the lens itself and to keep it on at all times if you're in a location where the eclipse is only partially visible. She recommends purchasing a small 4- by 4-inch sheet of the Thousand Oaks solar filter.

And if you're observing the sky in a location where the total eclipse is visible, you'll have a moment when you can take off the solar lens entirely and capture unfiltered images.

"During totality, you can remove all filters," Stocks told USA TODAY. "If you're looking with the solar glasses and you don't see anything, then it's safe to look at it during that time."

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after the total solar  eclipse  on April 8, the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

What time is the solar eclipse on April 8?

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.

Here are the major cities in each state where you can expect to experience totality (note that the included times do not account for when the partial eclipse begins and ends):

  • Dallas, Texas: 1:40-1:44 p.m. CDT
  • Idabel, Oklahoma: 1:45-1:49 p.m. CDT
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: 1:51-1:54 p.m. CDT
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri: 1:56-2:00 p.m. CDT
  • Paducah, Kentucky: 2-2:02 p.m. CDT
  • Carbondale, Illinois: 1:59-2:03 p.m. CDT
  • Evansville, Indiana: 2:02-2:05 p.m. CDT
  • Cleveland, Ohio: 3:13-3:17 p.m. EDT
  • Erie, Pennsylvania: 3:16-3:20 p.m. EDT
  • Buffalo, New York: 3:18-3:22 p.m. EDT
  • Burlington, Vermont: 3:26-3:29 p.m. EDT
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: 3:27-3:30 p.m. EDT
  • Caribou, Maine: 3:32-3:34 p.m. EDT

NASA will launch 3 rockets into space during the eclipse

NASA is preparing to launch three giant rockets into our atmosphere on the day of the eclipse. The agency is hoping to gather some valuable scientific data about  how solar eclipses alter Earth’s upper atmosphere .

NASA is using spacecraft called  sounding rockets  that are equipped with scientific instruments to take measurements and perform experiments during its sub-orbital flight.

The three rockets will launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and will reach an intended altitude of 260 miles,  NASA said . That's high enough to study disturbances  during a total solar eclipse  in the ionosphere, a region of Earth’s atmosphere between 55 to 310 miles above the ground.

Scientists hope to collect data on how the sun's sudden disappearance during the eclipse creates disturbances that could interfere with communications here on Earth.

“Understanding the ionosphere and developing models to help us predict disturbances is crucial to making sure our increasingly communication-dependent world operates smoothly," said mission leader  Aroh Barjatya , an engineering physicist at Florida's Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Eclipse one of many reasons 'flat Earth' claims are nonsense

Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, skeptics continue to believe the Earth is flat , a conspiracy theory experts say  dangerously feeds into paranoia  and spurs an unhealthy skepticism of all science and credible authorities.

The USA TODAY Fact-Check Team has debunked an array of flat Earth-related claims, including that Antarctica is really an ice wall around a flat Earth and the related conspiracy theory that space – and space travel – isn't real.

Experts say the debunked flat Earth conspiracy theory doesn't slow down  when an eclipse happens  – even though the event is precisely explained because of scientists' deep understanding of celestial bodies and their orbits.

Speaking about the skeptics, Jeffrey Blevins, a professor of journalism at the University of Cincinnati, said "They’re not just primed to believe the Earth is flat, they’re primed to believe you can’t trust science, academics, the media or government,” he said. “And it might also lead you to see other extremist views as plausible.”

What are you looking for?

The best place to see the total solar eclipse in 2024

Here’s where the skies will be clearest — and the surroundings most beautiful.

places to visit in kozhikode in 1 day

Total solar eclipses — which occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s brilliance — are rare phenomena. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible from the contiguous United States for the first time since 2017, and the next one won’t be visible from U.S. soil until 2044.

In USC News’ four-part series on the eclipse, USC experts weigh in on multiple aspects of this extraordinary celestial event: how to safely view the eclipse, the best place to see it, how to photograph it, and its symbolism.

Part 2: Where to watch the event

More Americans will have a front-row seat to the 2024 total solar eclipse than they did during the one in 2017. As it moves along its path from southwest Mexico to northeast Canada, the eclipse will cross 15 U.S. states, from Texas to Maine, passing over more cities and densely populated areas than the 2017 eclipse.

An estimated 31.6 million people will be in the path of totality — where the moon totally blocks the sun — up from 12 million in 2017. Millions more are expected to travel to see the totality unfold.

Outside of the path of totality, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in all 48 contiguous states.

But no matter the location, the weather will be a mitigating factor.

“The only thing that’s going to matter is whether you have cloudy skies or not — because if you have cloudy skies, you’re not going to see the eclipse,” said Vahé Peroomian , professor (teaching) of physics and astronomy at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

The best city for clear skies

places to visit in kozhikode in 1 day

April 8 is historically an overcast day along much of the eclipse’s path. “Every city in the U.S. along the path of totality has had cloudy skies 60% of the time [on April 8] in the last 20 years,” said Peroomian, an avid astro-tourist .

He recommended paying close attention to the forecast before making travel plans. “You might travel a long way only to see cloudy skies,” he cautioned.

Peroomian singled out Mazatlán, Mexico, as the best city for eclipse tourists. “It has only a 28% chance of being cloudy [on April 8],” he said.

The best natural setting

If the weather permits, natural settings such as national parks can create evocative backdrops for the eclipse. Niagara Falls in New York, Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas and Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio are just a few of the most scenic spots along the path of totality.

Last October, Peroomian traveled to Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah with his son to see the annular solar eclipse, when the moon partially blocked the sun. He described the natural surroundings as awe-inspiring. As the sky got progressively darker, the air temperature dropped and the wind quieted.

“Birds stopped singing,” Peroomian said. “A hush fell over the landscape.”

The best place for scientific research

At the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, a group of 16 students has been working since the fall semester to figure out how to photograph the eclipse in the path of totality from a helium balloon that will rise approximately 100,000 feet in the air — to the edge of space. The balloon itself will burst at peak altitude, but its payload will descend to the ground carrying the photographic equipment and data.

The group is advised by Michael Kezirian , adjunct professor of astronautics practice, who led two student balloon missions during the total solar eclipse in 2017 as part of NASA’s Space Grant Ballooning Project .

places to visit in kozhikode in 1 day

This year’s group spent considerable time choosing the most promising location for the balloon mission. They had to evaluate many factors, including the best terrain for launching the balloon and recovering the equipment when it returned to the ground. If the hardware were to land in a forested area or a large body of water, it could be damaged or hard to recover.

Weather conditions are also a concern. The students are hoping to avoid clouds, which could make it difficult for aircraft to see the balloon during its flight; rain, which could make balloon setup even more challenging and damage the sensitive electronics on board; and high surface winds, which could interfere with filling the balloon with helium, ultimately affecting its predicted path in the sky. High-altitude winds also must be accounted for, as the balloon will travel with the wind current on its approximately 30-minute trip to peak altitude.

The group favored Texas for its proximity to Los Angeles to reduce travel time and costs and its comparatively drier climate with fewer trees and large bodies of water than other states in the path of totality. Second-year aerospace engineering student Nicholas Lototsky gathered hourly weather data from six local airports in Texas from the past 15 years and ran simulations of the balloon’s trajectory from launch to peak altitude.

He settled upon Del Rio, Texas — a small city approximately seven miles from the U.S.-Mexico border — as the optimal launch spot.

“Del Rio has a 2% chance of rain on April 8 compared to about 6% in other sites in Texas and a 70% chance of clear skies compared to only about 50% in other parts of Texas,” said Armen Arakelyan, a junior astronautical engineering major co-leading the project with astronautical engineering doctoral student Howard Hall. “Del Rio is also located west of the center of the path of totality, so when the balloon is released, the jet stream will carry it toward the center of totality.”

Arakelyan added that he’s looking forward to traveling to Del Rio with the USC Viterbi group.

“It’s one thing to just see the eclipse, which is really cool,” Arakelyan said. “But whenever you have some objective, some mission behind it, it just adds another level to it.”
