Cruise Embarkation

Embarkation begins at the check-in time shown on your cruise ticket. Check-in closes 2 hours before the ship is due to depart in all embarkation ports. Before arriving at the port, please ensure that all personal details shown on the embarkation form in your e-ticket are checked and correct. You will be required to show your embarkation form before boarding.

At the terminal

1. Deliver your luggage to the designated staff, who will then have it sent directly to your cabin. All bags must be labelled beforehand with your name and surname, the name of the ship, the cabin number and the date and port of departure.

Luggage will be delivered directly to the cabin. The expected delivery timeframe is from late afternoon through early evening. We recommend keeping any items needed for embarkation day and evening in your carry-on bag including clothes for the evening and any medications. 2. Go to the embarkation area with all personal travel documents required for the cruise, and show staff the embarkation form on your cruise ticket or via the MSC for Me app (if available). Collect your Cruise Card and MSC wrist band (if available). Guests of the MSC Yacht Club will find an exclusive Check-In area and will be assisted with their luggage by the butler team at the terminal, who will escort them to the dedicated line for priority Check-In. On request, the butler will also unpack guests’ suitcases. 3. Proceed to the security control. Please note that staff may search you and/or your luggage and confiscate any articles that could represent a safety risk.

4. Board the ship where staff will take your security picture, if you have not already done so via the MSC for Me app or web check-in  (if available). Then proceed to your cabin.

5. Go to your cabin. Your Cruise card will serve as your cabin key, this magnetic card can also be used to pay for products and services onboard. For MSC Yacht Club Guests, it is also used to access the MSC Yacht Club area. If your cabin is not yet ready, you may begin your onboard purchases in the bars and restaurants by providing crew with your cabin number and full name

6. Activate your Cruise Card for onboard purchases. (See the Onboard Payment  section below for further information on how to do this.)

7. Take part in the obligatory safety drill.

8. Don’t miss the MSC Cruise Guide, an important presentation where we will tell you all you need to know in order to live your cruise to the full. The embarkation process might differ for MSC Seaside and MSC Divina.

Problems with web check in

Cool Cruiser

We booked a short cruise on MSC departing February 18, 2020 just to try it out. It is a long way off, but I figured I would do the web check in now. I am unable to ever get the web check in to work. I keep getting an error message saying "too many redirects." Anyone have any suggestions? I've tried 3 different browsers on my desktop, my iPad and my phone. Nothing works. Obviously we have loads of time to sort it out, but it is disconcerting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had the same problem and my cruise is in 2 week. I finally got it to work by using the link "Web Checkin" on the main web page instead of the link directly in my account.

Here is the link I've used :

https://www.msccruisesusa.com/en-us/Web-Check-in/Web-Check-In.aspx

Thank you so much. It worked. I was able to input all our information.

Too funny...after I did the web check in I received an email with another copy of our booking information and a "link" to do web check in... that link also does not work!

So, thank you again for your help. Clearly, MSC needs to work on their website to insure all their links are active and work properly.

10,000+ Club

It has been broken on the US site for weeks.  Main page works.  You can get edocs twenty days from sailing.

Yeah it was horrible, got no answer from MSC. I had to come here. We had to log out ans do it without logging in for it to work. So weird.

I heard MSC customer service is not wonderful so I figured I try trusted cruise critic to see if it could be solved before trying to call MSC. I don't know what I'd do without all the valuable information and input from cruise critic participants. Now I just have to remember not to log in to print my e -tickets 20 days before the cruise ( which isn't until February!)

Some times They are ready Very early, so just Go and check, on the same Way you did do the check in

I get the same problem/issue - "Too many redirects" (this is on the German site)  I too found the main link works, but only if you do not sign in to your account , however I am unable to continure the web-check-in because I am unable to select a county or city for my country, my selected country spawns an empty list for me to choose these from and as the list is empty I cannot choose any - but they are compulsory fields so I cannot complete the check-in!  Very frustrating! I have contaced all the customer support emails I could find as this is the only way to score some free 100 points - I know I can check-in the old fashioned way at the cruise terminal but hey.......

I also find I cannot print out my e-ticket as it says I have not completed the personal data entry - which is not true - I have filled in everything and there are no more boxes to fill in.... luckily for me my travel agent sent me the docs....

I had the same problem, GazZebo.  In addition to having to complete all the information, you also must upload the required photograph of yourself, and then it will show that you have completed the check in.  Once all parties in your room show complete information, then you can print the e-ticket.

Photo? I saw nothing in web check in requesting a photo upload. I am on u.s. site if that makes a difference.

I used the USA site as well.  Be sure to access web check-in from the home page before you sign in.  The section requesting a photograph upload is the last step in the check-in prcess. The page does allow you to skip the photograph, but if you skip this step, your check-in will show incomplete.

My web check in shows completed and no photograph was ever asked for. The check in page also says that our e tickets won't be available until final payment is made. We are going on a Bahamas cruise so perhaps that is why no photograph is needed. Our final payment is not due until November so I guess we will find out for sure if we can print our documents after that date.

It has asked us towards end last two trips for photo.  It does allow you to skip.  It would be nice like DCL they use a recent trip photo and skip all together but MSC can't get even basic edocs to work.

Our cruise is July 1 on Armonia. Ours never asked for a photo either... We went through every page, didn't skip anything!

I wonder if the photograph requirement is specific to particular ships.  We will be sailing on the Seaside next week.

nope they will still take your photo at the check in anyway

Thanks for that info - but i don't get that far due to not being able to fill in the compulsory fields for the address section - city and county (my country doesn't use these in the address and I cannot enter anything here)

I managed to complete the web-check-in using a different browser - the photos can be uploaded but you can skip this and it says photos will be taken at the terminal.

However as soon as I downloaded the E-Ticket that was sent to my email I find I cannot log into the MSC website to manage my booking anymore... it says I'm registered with another MSc regional website - I initially booked with German website - so I thought I'd try the UK one as that is my chosen language/details - and that website lets me log in but no booking shows up ...

I wish I hadn't bothered now! hope its a migration of data delay or glitch or something - feeling anxious

Correct if you register with one of the other sites IE Germany then that's where your registration is held if you log back in to your german site account you will then see your booking

or log in to your account on the UK site using the email and password option go to account settings and click link a booking number to this account put in the booking number and it should link your german booking to the uk account

19 hours ago, Epos Man said: or log in to your account on the UK site using the email and password option go to account settings and click link a booking number to this account put in the booking number and it should link your german booking to the uk account

I find I can log into multiple country accounts -  i tried uk, spain etc... when i try to add the booking number they said it is linked to another country - when I log into the German site (which was displaying correctly until yesterdays web check in) It says my account is linked to another country.  So seems I am linked to a mystery 'blank' country - I guess its not a big deal as I only have 12 days to go but I was going to look at some extras...

turns out when you complete the webcheckin in links your login account to the country specified on your details there on that moment.  So mine switched to UK but on the UK site I cannot see or link my booking as its a german one - I can only see the booking on the german site by logging in with the booking number and then I cn only see excursions and extras and not he full experience of managing my booking. Kind of weird - but IT is IT....

The web check in is driving me insane!  My daughter was able to check in using the MSC for Me app. My MSC app wouldn’t let me check in, but I was able to check in via the website.

I then spent ages trying to work out why I couldn’t check in our other cabin which has the same booking number.  After talking to MSC I was told I would have to log out, then log in as my husband as he is the named adult in the second cabin.

After all that - I am having the same problem as others with not being able to complete required fields, so I can’t check them in.  And yet, myself and my daughter didn’t have this issue!

MSC don’t make things easy!!

architect1337

I've been sailing with MSC for around 8-9 years now and one of the constants frustrations is how bad the website is (MSC UK). It looks nice but just doesn't work. Examples are web checkin, where you are asked for a mandatory address field that you can't type in. Purchases are always fun, with the credit card payment sometimes going through, sometimes timing out, then it's onto customer service as it will allow you buy an unlimited drinks package twice!

Anyway, customer services usually sorts this out and certainly in the UK, getting through to them is not too bad.

Cruising from Southampton with MSC Cruises (2022 Guide)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Front

MSC Cruises’ growth in Southampton has been somewhat meteoric over the last few years.

From just offering a few summer cruises back in 2017-8, to now offering all-year-round voyages from their own new cruise terminal, there is something on offer for every cruiser on a variety of different MSC ships.

IMPORTANT: Please stick to your embarkation times – this helps the flow of passengers through the terminal and onto the ship. Ignoring embarkation times leads to large queues and increased wait times.

Introduction to MSC Cruises UK

MSC Cruises operates from the Port of Southampton for its voyages. During the ‘Return to Cruising’ in 2021, MSC offered multiple embarkation ports additional to Southampton – these included Liverpool and Greenock (Glasgow).

In 2022 MSC Cruises will again offer a packed cruise programme with their flagship, MSC Virtuosa .

All cruises will depart from Southampton and whilst open to other nationalities this time around, embarkation will only be at the Port of Southampton and specifically, at their brand new cruise terminal – the Horizon Cruise Terminal .

In this guide, we will cover how the cruise terminal works and the embarkation and disembarkation procedures for sailing with MSC Cruises from Southampton.

MSC Virtuosa - Atmosphere Pool

MSC Cruises Southampton FAQ

You can park your car directly at the Horizon Cruise Terminal. A 2-minute walk to the cruise terminal before you board the ship.

What Covid-19 requirements are there when sailing with MSC from Southampton?

MSC Cruises UK has the latest requirements for passengers sailing from Southampton at this link . The section for UK-based cruisers sailing from Southampton is labelled: Covid-19: Measures to embark for UK Residents & Non-Schengen Countries

Which MSC cruise ships sail from Southampton?

During the Spring/Summer of 2022, MSC Virtuosa will sail from Southampton. For Winter 2022/23, MSC Preziosa will offer weekly voyages. In Spring/Summer 2023 MSC Grandiosa will offer 2-14 night voyages.

How much luggage can I take?

The benefit of cruising is generally fewer limits on luggage. However, you will need to make sure that each bag/case is under 23KG – this is so that the people handling them can do so safely. Whilst the maximum cases are meant to be four per cabin, you can usually take one or two more if you are going on a much longer voyage – especially for repositioning or a world cruise.

Which cruise terminal does MSC Virtuosa sail from?

The Horizon Cruise Terminal – Dock Gate 10, Southern Road leads to Herbert Walker Avenue, where the car park and terminal are located.

Horizon Terminal Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal

Located at Dock Gate 10, Southern Road is the new Horizon Cruise Terminal – a joint partnership between MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

This is the main terminal for MSC Cruise departures – it is signposted as ‘Dock Gate 10’ or ‘Horizon Cruise Terminal’ on West Quay Road, Southampton. The postcode for your sat nav is SO15 1HG.

Horizon Cruise Terminal offers short stay and long stay parking. Drop-off facilities by car or taxi are also available at the port.

The short stay and long stay car park are both signposted and port staff are on hand to guide you to the correct car park or drop-off. You must book long-stay parking before arrival.

Taxis are available from just outside the front of the cruise terminal.

MSC Cruises Parking in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal Car Parking

MSC Cruises have their own parking in the Port of Southampton at the Horizon Cruise Terminal which is located on Southern Road, Southampton (SO15 1HG).

  • The parking is safe, secure and located on the Port of Southampton property
  • You take your keys with you after parking
  • The car park is locked after all passengers have arrived and the ship has set sail – it is monitored by CCTV and the port
  • Parking for Back to Back voyages is available
  • Blue Badge parking spaces are located nearer the front for easier terminal access
  • Luggage trolleys are on hand
  • Arrive anytime before your cruise ticket boarding time

MSC Cruises Embarkation in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal Drop off - MSC Cruises Southampton

After arriving at Horizon Cruise Terminal (whether by car, taxi or other means) you will need to drop off your luggage – this is usually just your case(s) that you would usually check-in if you were flying. Hand luggage and suit carriers can be taken inside the terminal (or anything else, as long as you can carry it through the terminal, security and onboard the ship without help).

Baggage drop-off

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Baggage drop off

Make sure you print out the luggage labels that are on the PDF that MSC Cruises sends you when you have ‘checked in’ online (your travel agent may send them if you didn’t book direct) – you can print out as many labels as you wish. Just attach them to your case before you hand them over to baggage drop-off. If you lose a label, forget one or need an extra one – just ask – you can get one at the baggage drop-off area.

Make sure your check-in luggage doesn’t weigh more than 23KG per case/bag – this is for the health and safety of the baggage handlers and the crew on board who will deliver your luggage to outside your cabin door for you.

Note: Do not put your passport in your check-in luggage – you need it next!

Initial Check-in

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Entrance

( Important: Since April 2022 the rules have changed regarding face masks in the terminal – they are not mandatory anymore)

At check-in, you’ll be asked to show your passport, cruise ticket, MSC health form (which is in your cruise ticket), Covid-19 test result and vaccination/proof of recovery certificates (if applicable).

You can show digital insurance/vaccination proof if needed on your phone – however, some people have said that reception in the terminal isn’t great – so feel to print out them beforehand, or save screenshots on your phone (make sure they are clear!)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Security area

Cruise ship security is much like airport security – apart from there is no limit on liquids (ie toiletries, etc) – MSC’s policy is not to bring drinks or food onboar d, but of course, you can bring some snacks/drinks for yourself or your children whilst you are boarding without issue.

Everything will go through the x-ray machine and you will walk through an x-ray scanner – belts, watches, etc will be placed in a tray via the machine.

Covid-19 Testing (no longer conducted at the port)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Waiting Area

Important: Since late April 2022 – Covid-19 testing at the port is no longer conducted. However, you must still have a valid negative Covid-19 test that was taken within 48-hours of your embarkation time.

After security, you head up the escalator to the waiting area. A brief check of your paperwork follows (cruise ticket).

You will be assigned a group number (sticker or piece of paper) which you will need after the final check-in – this will be your waiting area number.

Final Check-in

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Check-in

After arriving in this area, you go to the long check-in desk at the rear of the cruise terminal. Here, a customer relations agent will take your cruise ticket and passport from you briefly, only to check. They may also ask to see your insurance details and take a copy of your vaccination history too.

They will ask to take a photo of you – this photo will be uploaded to the ship and used to confirm your purchases in shops on board and allow you entry to/from the ship.

You will then be handed your cruise card – this states which deck and cabin you are located on and also your dining time. Additionally, it will also be a different colour card based on the MSC Voyager Club status you have. Initial first-time passengers are blue cards.

Sometimes, you are given the option to register a credit or debit card here – but you can actually do this on board and have 48 hours from embarkation to do this at one of the many automated machines around the ship (more details about those in your cabin).

You then sit at the numbered waiting area until your group is announced to board the ship.

There are free refreshments (bottles of water) handed out by the MSC crew if you wish and also toilets available.

Boarding the ship

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Boarding the ship

When your group is called you head to the doors at the rear of the waiting area which is signposted – your cruise card will be checked and you follow the signs to the ship. The walk can be quite lengthy as the gangway is a series of ramps to allow wheelchair/mobility access. However, there is no rush and you can enjoy views of your ship as you walk along them.

As you approach the ship you’ll cross one final gangway onto the ship and you will need only your cruise card from here. A member of the ship’s security team will ask for your card which they will scan and they will check your photo (just taken) matches you – you are then free to enter the ship.

On arrival, you will find a number of MSC crew waiting to greet you – they can help direct you to lifts and/or your cabin if you need help. Generally, cabins are not ready until around 12:30-1pm PM on the day of embarkation.

You are free to use any of the bars, restaurants or other facilities on the ship from the moment you board!

Horizon Cruise Terminal (rear)

MSC Cruises Back to Back sailings from Southampton

If you are booked on a back to back cruise on the same ship with MSC Cruises you will need to visit the Guest Relations desk during your first cruise and confirm the procedure with them.

Generally, you will be required on the day of your second cruise to visit Guest Relations and settle your bill for your first cruise and they will re-check you in without you needing to leave the ship (this is only applicable in Southampton – other ports, such as Miami may differ) – this is usually done between 9-10am.

They will take a copy of your passport and vaccination record again and issue you a new cruise card for the second cruise duration (and take a new photo of you).

You will then need to visit the Medical Centre for a free Covid-19 LFT test which they will do for you – Guest Relations will phone ahead and confirm it is free and the result will be told to you and uploaded to the system so that the ship knows you are Covid-19 clear.

Other than that, everything else continues as normal – one thing to note is if you have an existing internet package is that it does not run out until midnight on your last day (your first day on your next cruise) – so you will need to use the same login information until midnight.

If you are parking at the Horizon Cruise Terminal for a Back to Back cruise – let them know when you arrive, you will be directed to park in a slightly different area (of the same car park) so that your car isn’t left in the way when everyone leaves from the first cruise!

MSC Cruises Disembarkation in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Luggage collection

Disembarkation is very easy with the Horizon Cruise Terminal.

As standard practice on all cruises, the luggage that you do not wish to carry off will be collected from outside your cabin by around 1am on the last night of your voyage. You will be given labels to put on your luggage on the final day and you can visit Guest Relations if you need any more.

Depending on your MSC Voyager status or your MSC Cruise Experience (Bella, Fantastica, etc) you will be assigned a disembarkation time and a place to meet for this.

Simply follow the instructions on the letter in your cabin and make sure that your cruise balance is ZERO . If you are even in credit by 0.50 GBP/0.50 EUR you will be denied leaving the ship until you collect the balance from Guest Relations! Visit there before you leave the ship!

Same identity documents that you will use on your embarkation day

If you are on a cruise that does not exit the country's waters (ie Coastal Cruise in South Africa), you will not need a passport. Else you MUST complete your passport details if calling at another country, such as the Cayman Islands, Panama, Mozambique or Namibia.

In the document field, click on the drop-down arrow and select ID Card and then fill in your ID number to the right (if it is not filled in already).

Note: the details on your travel documents have to be identical to the details on your identity documents (name, surname, date of birth and identity documents number) that you will use on the embarkation day.

Next, complete the personal contact details fields:

Personal details

Your personal email address, the phone prefix (+44 for UK | +27 for South African numbers) followed by your phone number in the last field.

Drop the zero at the front of the number - eg: 831234567 or 119876543. Don’t put any spaces or hyphens in the number.

Next, add the emergency contact details:

emergency contact details

It is crucial that the person you refer to as your emergency contact is NOT travelling with you.

Insert the person’s name, the country prefix (+41 for Switzerland) and their phone number.

Drop the zero at the front of the number - eg: 831234567 or 119876543. Don’t insert any spaces or hyphens in the number.

If you wish to use the same emergency contact for all the people travelling on this booking number, select the orange tick box to use the same data for all passengers.

Next, you will need to complete your home address details:

Adress information

If you wish to copy information from another passenger whose details have already been entered, select their name from the " Same Address Information as" field.

Else enter your postcode in the Postcode field and click on FIND. This should populate the City, Region and Country fields. (you might have to click FIND a couple of times in order to unlock the city dropdown menu)

If the city is not correct, click on the drop-down arrow and choose the correct one from those available. Then type your address (street name and number, apartment name and number, etc) into the address field.

The Country doesn't always work, contact MSC Cruises or your travel agent in order for them to insert the correct country.

Travel with

Travel with

Travel with is to be filled only if you have other people travelling with you that are NOT in the same cabin or on the same booking number.

Lastly, on this page, there are three tick boxes to select:

Privacy policy

In the above, the " I have read the Privacy policy" is mandatory. The communication to third parties & the personalised offers and news are not.

Do select yes if these options are suited to you.

Finally, click the orange “NEXT” button at the bottom of the page.

You should then be able to select the next passenger to be checked in and repeat the process.

When your booking is complete you will get a green tick next to each name:

Green ticks mean it is ready for the e ticket that you will get either directly or through your travel agency. - And this is all for the www.msccruises.com check in

When you have a green tick next to each name, your web check-in is done and you are ready to receive your e-ticket.

Those e-tickets will be sent to you, either by the cruise line or by the Hupla support team about 2 to 3 weeks before the embarkation day .

If at the end of the web check-in, you get an error message that you have not completed all the steps, but you have the green ticks next to your name, don't worry, it is all in order.

We will reach out to you if we find any issues with your profile.

On-line Check In and Cruise Documents

Greyhound Crazy

Hi! I apologize if this has been asked already many times, but I don't quite know what to do. We sail on May 21. I completed everyone's web check in ages ago, except for the photo (no matter what we try we can't upload a photo and we can't take a photo, we've tried many different things all to no avail). The information has been there except for the photo for months. I did call MSC, and the agent said the photo thing is a common problem and not to worry about it, we will still get our cruise documents and they will just take a picture at embarkation. So I didn't worry. We are now within 20 days of boarding, though, and I have noticed that our address information has disappeared from our web check in information. I keep re-adding it and it keeps deleting, there is no way to save it. Our other info is all there, phone number, emergency contact, passport info, etc. But the address disappears. And of course, no photo.  The website tells me my cruise documents are not ready - is this because our photo isn't there, or our address keeps disappearing? How do we get these documents (I can't help but think we won't be able to embark without them)? Do I have to call MSC (or make my TA do it)?

If you have a TA have the TA do it, otherwise call MSC, eventually they can put your address in there and it will stay.  Also they can send you your cruise docs by email.  Request it when you call.  Hope that helps!

Thanks

Thank you so much!

You can try to see if this works. I was having the same thing happen and was able to get my documents. By the address fields, there is an orange "find" box that will automatically fill in the address for you and if you check the box that you agree with terms and skip the photo section, you can click on "next". It will then bring you to a page that will email the documents to you.

I may not have complete details because I'm doing this from memory as I'm too afraid to mess things up with mine.

TA auto sent document pdf one day before sailing.  I printed before.

Okay, I gave up with the website. Even though all the address info and other things were completed correctly, I was not able to email the documents to myself. I asked my TA to get them, and he did - but they don't have our Voyagers Club status on them. So I called MSC, this was corrected, and they said they sent the travel documents to me. I did not get them. I called again, and was told the request has been put in, and I should have them in a day or so. It's now been 3 days. My TA has also called, but was told MSC is experiencing difficulty sending out travel documents and they will send them when they send them, basically. I seem to say this a lot about MSC - it shouldn't be this hard. I am not sure what to do. Yes, I am grateful I at least have one set of travel documents (even if they have, for whatever reason, not linked our VC number to the reservation and our status doesn't show). But really should it be this difficult to obtain a correct set of documents? It's a simple email. I don't care if it comes to me or to my TA, but it's not hard to send one and I fail to see how difficult it can be to generate one. We embark in 15 days - if I didn't have the first set of documents I'd be a complete basket case by now. As it is I'm only a partial basket case and this vacation better be worth the headaches.

In addition to the tip given above about letting the site " find " your complete address, another tip is to try to go through the process with a different passenger in the same stateroom. I was unable to get the travel docs sent to my email for me but when going through the process with the other 3 staying in my stateroom (wife/2 kids), the docs came through just fine...even though I use the same email address for everyone.

Strangely, I was able to get mine more than 90 days out for my upcoming cruise while the previous cruise was unavailable until 19 days out.

Once on the ship , mostly everything is fine. That's why we continue to sail with MSC (and others). No cruise is perfect but the onboard experience is the opposite of the IT or finance department.

Yeah, this didn't work for me, doesn't matter which passenger I use. I had so hoped it would. But thanks, I do appreciate it.

I have the same promblem. Our Voyager club status doesn t show on the ticket. We are sailing the 12 th of May from Kiel. I Think it Will Be close to sailing if We get a new ticket. Once you could order an E-mail with the document from the web check in site but it s not possible longer....
