Vegan Hamburg | Best Restaurants, Food Tours, Hotels & More

One of my main priorities while visiting Hamburg was to check out the vegan scene of Germany's second-largest city. It turns out it's definitely not so developed as in Berlin (but then here we are spoiled, perhaps!), but the concept is still well understood and there are a few very good options for vegans. Here's a quick look at five vegan and vegan-friendly places I found in Hamburg.

Hamburg Vegan Restaurants

This fully vegan café (except that they offer cow's milk for coffee) is situated in the Gängeviertel, a somewhat alternative district of Hamburg. They serve light meals, cakes and drinks in quirky surroundings. The bathroom is especially noteworthy!

Savoury options change daily, but including wraps, sandwiches, quiches and salads. The cakes are moist and satisfying with some interesting flavour combinations like lime and coconut. Ideal for a light lunch or just afternoon coffee and cake.

  • A ddress : Caffamacherreihe 49, 20355 Hamburg
  • Forsquare ; Facebook

When the inevitable cravings for vegan ice cream beyond simple fruit sorbets hit, head to Eisbande. With about half the options vegan (which are very clearly marked), there's plenty to choose from including flavours like Snicker's, coconut and tiramisu.

As a bonus, they always serve coffee (with soy milk, if you ask for it) and sometimes even have raw vegan cakes on offer.

  • Address : Bartelsstraße 7, 20357 Hamburg
  • Foursquare ; Facebook

Jim Burrito

With a range of burritos, tacos and quesadillas that can be ordered with meat, vegetarian or vegan, this place serves good, filling food for decent prices. They unfortunately don't offer any vegan cheese substitutes, but have some interesting ingredients such as cactus or tempeh as optional fillings.

Service is a little hit and miss when it's busy, and you need to order and pay at the counter as likely no one will come to take your order.

  • Address : Schulterblatt 12, 20357 Hamburg

Mamalicious

This vegetarian breakfast joint and cafe offers almost everything on their (reasonably extensive) menu with a vegetarian or vegan option. Breakfast options include things like cereal, fruit salad, pancakes, vegan bacon and sausages, plus they have soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches for other times of day.

The location is very cool with some quirky little details that aren't immediately obvious but which may give you a little chuckle. Staff are friendly if a little thin for a busy weekend brunch shift. Nonetheless, a great option to get a variety of decent vegan breakfast foods.

  • Address : Max-Brauer-Allee 277, 22769 Hamburg
  • Foursquare ; Facebook ; website

Happen Pappen

This cosy little place is a very popular lunch spot, and it's easy to see why it fills up! Serving all vegan food , with two main dishes for lunch which change daily, the focus is on healthy comfort food and it doesn't disappoint! They also serve food well into the evening, and on weekends, their all-day breakfast menu is full of delights such as porridge, pancakes and sandwiches.

The setting is lovely too, and though it's quite small (you could even say cramped), the atmosphere remains friendly and relaxed. In the late afternoon, they don't serve hot food, but come by for a piece of their homemade cake and coffee instead!

Vegan-Friendly Hotels in Hamburg

Madison Hotel – this modern hotel with 166 rooms is a vegan-friendly hotel that welcomes vegans and vegetarians with open arms. Guests can enjoy a unique dining experience at the in-house restaurant. A buffet breakfast is served every morning. Though not specifically vegan or vegetarian only, their onsite restaurant and specifically the chef is well equipped to handle special dietary needs.

ARCOTEL Rubin – This modern hotel is centrally located close to Norderelbe, eateries and shops. They offer a buffet with a sizable vegan selection as well as several options on their restaurant menus. Enjoy sample regional and vegan cuisine at Wiener Kaffee, or try vegan and regional dishes at FACETTE. Guests can also enjoy the comfortable lounge bar on site.

Green Haven B&B – Opened in 2014, this is Hamburg's first 100% vegan accommodation option. They offer small, individually furnished holiday apartments with a focus on cruelty-free, sustainable materials and furnishings. It’s well located between the airport, Hamburg city center and the main train station in the Wandsbek district.

There are many sites for apartment rentals including Airbnb and Vrbo. Prices are generally comparable to budget hotels, especially if you’re willing to get a room in a shared apartment.

With all the vegan food in Hamburg, it was time to completely revamp this post. I present to you the new and much-improved version of my vegan Hamburg guide, sorted by specific categories because this vegan Hamburg guide keeps growing!

The Only Vegan Hamburg Guide You Need

Vegan fast food in hamburg.

I always say I’m not the biggest fan of fast food, but the truth is that burgers and the like are things I never make myself so I actually quite enjoy ordering them when I get the chance. And there are a ton of fast food options to start this vegan Hamburg guide with.

One of my absolute favorites is Vincent Vegan . The first time I went back to Hamburg from Athens, I found their stall at a street festival and was immediately impressed. They had several vegan burgers (insert bad joke about vegan Hamburgers in Hamburg here), and it was amazing to stroll through a street festival and be able to get vegan food.

To my delight, I noticed when I went back to Hamburg several months later, that they had by then also established a permanent location at Europa Passage, a mall in the center of Hamburg. While food courts in malls aren’t exactly the coziest spots, it’s amazing to have such great vegan options in a mall. So if you go shopping with non-vegan friends you won’t be forced to buy from a non-vegan business. On top of that, they also make excellent fries so getting the menu option is worth it.

But it doesn’t end there! The next time I went back to Hamburg Vincent Vegan had yet another fixed location at another Hamburg mall, Mercado. And then a location opened right at central station – absolutely perfect for when you arrive from a long train ride! No wonder this vegan Hamburg guide keeps on growing!

By now, I’ve had Vincent Vegan burgers plenty of times, but my favorite would have to be the falafel quinoa burger with cranberry sauce. Make sure to try it! Ballindamm 40. Open Monday to Saturday 11 am to 8 pm. Ottenser Hauptstraße 10. Open Monday to Saturday 11 am to 8 pm. Steintorwall 18-20. Open Monday to Sunday 11:30 am to 8 pm.

On our first trip to Hamburg, Alfonso was not yet vegan, so we also tried a place called Most Wanted Burger in the neighborhood of Eimsbüttel. Otherwise, I’d probably have even fewer non-vegan places on this vegan Hamburg guide. Eimsbüttel is probably our favorite neighborhood to stay in, and Most Wanted Burger was really close to our Airbnb.

The best thing about them was that even though I didn’t expect them to have vegan options they actually did have a vegan burger. Their jackfruit burger was a bit too sweet for me, but considering the super friendly staff and cozy atmosphere, I think Most Wanted Burger is a good option if you’re going out with friends and are the only vegan in the group. They also have a second vegan burger now! Osterstraße 31. Open Monday to Sunday 12 pm to 10 pm.

Then there is Apple & Eve , a new vegan fast food restaurant that operates similarly to the big chains. You order at the counter and wait for your meal before you take it to an empty table. It is, however, much cozier and doesn’t give you those cold vibes the big chains have.

The catch is that while Apple & Eve serves fast food, they don’t use preservatives in their food which makes it a restaurant for those who want a quick meal but still prefer something on the healthier side.

I wasn’t too impressed with the burger I tried, but the prices are decent and the location is top-notch (right outside metro Sternschanze). Schanzenstraße 107. Open Monday to Sunday 12 pm to 9 pm.

Right across from Apple & Eve, on the little square facing Sternschanze metro, you can find a tiny stall called Vegan Vandal. There is limited outdoor seating, but because it’s such a small place the prices are really affordable.

The burgers here are really good and filling. I’d definitely go back. Sternschanze 9. Tuesday to Saturday 12 pm to 9 pm.

One of my favorite places on this vegan Hamburg guide would have to be Fried Club . This is the perfect location for warm summer nights. There is a terrace, and as Fried Club is right at the beginning of Reeperbahn, you can start your evening with fries or burgers and some drinks here and then head out to party.

I ordered one of their loaded fries options which consisted of sweet potato fries, spring onions and peanuts with a peanut sauce and aioli. Alfonso chose their Beyond burger and said it was one of the best Beyond burgers he had, and not only because they used a black bun for this. My non-vegan friend was also very happy with her fries.

In addition, there are lots of refreshing drink options such as lemonade. Definitely my top tip for a vegan summer in Hamburg. Reeperbahn 7. Open Tuesday to Thursday 6 pm to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday 12 pm to 11 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 10 pm.

Now, if you spend a lot of time in the city and get bored with all the other options on this vegan Hamburg guide you may want to venture outside of the city center. In that case, innerluck is another option for vegan fast (and healthy) food. It’s a bit difficult to find (tucked away in between the gardens surrounding a sports complex), and the neighborhood is of no interest to vegans (in fact, the zoo is right across the street) so it’s not the first place you would want to try when in Hamburg.

But the food is good, and because it’s so far away from the center it isn’t busy at all. The restaurant is actually inside the sports complex called Sportwerk, but don’t worry it’s not for fitness freaks only. Innerluck offers burgers and sandwiches, but salads are available as well (and they’re quite filling!). Hagenbeckstraße 124a. Open Monday to Friday 1 pm to 9 pm.

Now fast food isn’t restricted to burgers. What if you’re more into pizza? Well, don’t worry, vegan restaurant Froindlichst has got you covered. There are two locations: One in trendy Winterhude and the other one in the former Danish village of Ottensen.

The Winterhude location is super cozy which is much needed in a city that is known for being rainy and windy most of the year. You can have pizzas, burgers, or simply salads here, but no matter what you order it’s going to be huge, and you’re going to be really full. And while pizza, burger, and salads may not sound like anything special, at Froindlichst they manage to add a special touch.

For the New Amsterdam pizza I ordered, for instance, they used a Hollandaise sauce along with broccoli, smoked tofu, and cherry tomatoes. Likewise, the burgers are not your average meat replacements like seitan, but rather lentil patties which are again complemented with delicious vegan sauces like aioli.

Another thing I liked was that the Hot Amigo burger I ordered once was actually slightly spicy. Too often when items are listed as spicy they are anything but. The only problem with Froindlichst is that their meals are so filling that I have never been able to try one of their desserts.

The other location in Ottensen is a lot larger and more spacious. They offer brunch on Sundays which I wanted to check out with my brother, but, sadly, they were completely booked, so if brunch is your thing make sure to make a reservation. So I went back a few days later and had the Mexavo pizza which was gigantic. I struggled to finish it and, after that, definitely didn’t have room for dessert. It was topped with guacamole, nachos, and corn. In other words, it’s definitely better to share this with somebody else.

But this past July, when we went back here, we were a bit disappointed. We met with a friend for drinks, and the prices seemed to really have gone up while the quality of the food went down.

The peanut butter chocolate shake I got was definitely delicious and refreshing for a hot summer day. Our mozzarella pizza, on the other hand, was quite a disappointment. It was okay but not super delicious. I also ordered an iced tea which sounded really interesting but really wasn’t good at all.

In the end, I didn’t feel the quality of the items justified the high price at all. However, I would go back because this was the first time I had issues with their food. Barmbeker Straße 169. Open Monday to Sunday 12 pm to 10 pm. Daimlerstraße 12. Open Sunday to Thursday 12 pm to 10 pm, Friday to Saturday 12 pm to 11 pm.

Maybe Rå doesn’t qualify as typical fast food as it’s on the healthier side with it’s salad bowls, but the whole setting and service are very much in the spirit of fast food as you order your bowl at the counter and then take your bowl with you. I honestly wasn’t a big fan of the food here and found the atmosphere very cold and uncomfortable, but if you’re looking for something that’s both quick and a little healthier this is definitely your best bet in Hamburg. ABC-Straße 52. Open Monday to Saturday 11 am to 7 pm.

My final tip for fast food on this vegan Hamburg guide is Bäristo , a food truck which I found in the modern HafenCity. I had the hot dog wrap which was tasty and filling. While €5 seems expensive for a wrap you have to keep in mind that this neighborhood is extremely pricy so you can’t really expect to find cheaper fast food here. Check their website for locations.

Vegan Cafés and Bistros in Hamburg

I love the cafés in Hamburg. Hamburg is actually quite a Scandinavian city in many ways, and I like the Scandinavian style of cafés: super cozy because it’s usually cold, rainy, and windy, and always beautifully decorated. I like spending time with a hot beverage and maybe a good book. Likewise, I love the casual atmosphere in bistros, so here are my favorite additions to this vegan Hamburg guide in the category of more casual places for slow food.

My first recommendation is HappenPappen . First of all, I love the sign outside against racism, sexism, homophobia, and fascism. Those who are a bit more active in the vegan community know that there is a big problem in the activist movement with people who put animal rights issues above everything else, forgetting about human rights issues. (Check out my post on intersectionality and the privilege of white vegan men for my thoughts on that.) It’s great when vegan places make a clear statement against discrimination of any kind.

I also love that from what I’ve seen, the owner and entire staff appear to be female. (While women are often used in vegan advertising, they’re often underrepresented in vegan businesses.)

HappenPappen has a changing menu. One of their regular items is their vegetable quiche which I’ve ordered various times. But last time I tried one of their burgers which was also really good and filling.

HappenPappen also offers fantastic cakes. I love their banana bread, but there are so many different things to try! Feldstraße 36. Open Monday to Friday 1 pm to 7 pm.

Then there is Nasch in the up and coming Gängeviertel. Artists and activists rediscovered this old neighborhood, and with the Schanze area having been completely gentrified, the Gängeviertel appears to be the new center of the alternative scene in Hamburg. However, as there are many businesses in the area, you can also find some men in suits having their lunch at Nasch. In fact, this place is so popular that the daily special sells out quickly and you may not always find a table.

Nasch is not entirely vegan (they offer dairy milk), but the dishes are always vegan. There’s a daily special, but some of their most popular dishes are the vegan börek and the quiche. And the salads are always fresh and tasty.

The atmosphere at Nasch is really cozy and relaxed. The fact that it’s so popular can make your lunch even more interesting as you can easily start conversations with the people at the next table. Caffamacherreihe 49. Open Monday to Friday 10 am to 3 pm.

Another vegetarian café with vegan options is Café Koppel . You can find this place in an artists’ center off Lange Reihe. They offer soy hot chocolate and sometimes have vegan cakes as well. In addition, it’s a nice and cozy spot to relax after exploring the St. Georg neighborhood. Koppel 66. Open Monday 12 pm to 5 pm, Wednesday to Friday 12 pm to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.

Now, if you are staying in the Eimsbüttel neighborhood, Café ZeitRaum offers a vegan breakfast which consists of muesli, toast, and some vegan spreads including jam. It’s really good and filling, and I loved that there were so many different flavors. It was a culinary journey from sweet to salty and back to sweet again.

This vegetarian café is very cozy which is perfect for those rainy days in Hamburg. However, it is a bit far from the city center so I would only recommend it if you are staying in the neighborhood. But I didn’t want to leave this off my vegan Hamburg guide. Müggenkampstraße 45. Open Monday to Friday 9 am to 11:45 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 11:45 pm.

Another must is In guter Gesellschaft (“in good company”). It’s the first zero-waste café in Hamburg and used to be vegetarian but recently turned vegan. The atmosphere is very cozy, and the first time I went there for breakfast, they were playing 90’s rap. I felt so at home!

They have different breakfast options, such as porridge or different spreads with sourdough bread. Germans really love bread, so you can be sure that the quality of the bread is very high. The spreads range from a lentil spread to vegan cream cheese, and then you also get grilled vegetables along with that.

Beware if you want to have breakfast here on a Sunday since Sunday is a day that many Germans go for breakfast with friends. It will be really full and you might not find a table. If you do, you might have to wait quite a while to be able to order and even longer to get your food.

Above all, In guter Gesellschaft helps you figure out ways in which you can live a zero-waste lifestyle. It’s a really fantastic concept, and I’m so happy that they finally went fully vegan. Sternstraße 25. Open Wednesday to Monday 10 am to 6 pm.

By far the cutest place on this vegan Hamburg guide is Katers Köök , a cozy cat café that is fully vegan. All the cats here were adopted from shelters and have found a new home at the café. Because I really like the interior and the concept of this place, I had breakfast here various times.

I can say that almost every time I was here the cats were absolutely free to do what they wanted without people bothering them. The staff are very friendly and you can tell that they really love cats. There is a lot of information on ways you can help animals in need which is more than I can say for most of the vegan or vegetarian restaurants in Hamburg. Like most places that offer breakfast on this vegan Hamburg guide, they open very late though. This can be inconvenient for tourists who want to start their day early.

As for the food, I tried the sweet breakfast with bread and marmalade as well as the smoothie bowl which is available in a red (berry) and green (vegetable) variety. Everything I tried here was really good and filling, and I definitely want to come back next time I go to Hamburg. Kleiner Schäferkamp 24. Open Tuesday to Friday 11:30 am to 6 pm, Saturday 10 am to 8 pm, Sunday 10 am to 6 pm.

Another mindful option for breakfast is Ændrè . You can find this beautiful café in a more residential neighborhood. We were able to sit on the terrace, but it’s purely for takeaway now.

You can definitely taste that the food is made with love. Both the banana bread and the muesli we ordered here were delicious. However, it’s quite an expensive place which kept us from coming back even though it seems to be the only entirely vegan place in Hamburg that is open early enough for breakfast. Lehmweg 31a. Open Monday to Sunday 9 am to 3 pm.

A new favorite of mine, but one that is a bit out of the way for the average tourist is Soul . This vegan café makes instagrammable bowls, breakfasts, and cakes that don’t contain any refined sugar. It’s located in a beautiful residential neighborhood close to the Alster so why not combine a visit here with a walk by the water.

I loved the spacious interior and the interesting mix of people that were there. To me, it was a great place for people-watching, and it’s definitely one of the coziest vegan cafés in Hamburg. Eppendorfer Landstraße 109. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm.

International Vegan Food in Hamburg

While fast food and bistro food are really nice, eventually you need something a little more exciting. That’s why I added a section of international cuisine to this vegan Hamburg guide.

Schanzendöner, right across from metro Sternschanze, offers a vegan döner. If you’re vegan and you miss having döner you definitely must try this. There’s not much vegan junk food that can compare to this deliciousness. As there are no seats, the best thing is to simply take it home, or, if the weather permits, you can sit outside to devour your scrumptious döner. What’s really helpful is that they have a sign listing the different vegan sauces making it very easy to fully veganize your meal.

This is one of my must-visits whenever I’m in town. Schanzenstraße 99. Open Monday to Friday 10 am to 4 am, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 6 am.

A place that not everyone might consider suitable for this section is Mamalicious . I am simply adding it here because they mainly focus on Canadian food which really isn’t comparable to German food. I used to go here regularly when I still lived in Hamburg (I remember it from its first location in St. Pauli, called Don’t Tell Mama.)

My first breakfast here were the vegan pancakes with Canadian maple syrup, and wow, were they good. In Europe, it’s very difficult to get North American style pancakes, but since the owner of Mamalicious is actually Canadian, she makes sure these get done right. Having lived in Canada myself, I obviously drowned my pancakes in maple syrup not knowing when I would next have the chance. I so wish there was a place like that here in Athens.

We also had the French toast which is vegan, and it was so unbelievably yummy. I absolutely recommend that if you go with at least one other person you order both the pancakes as well as the French toast and share. A truly delectable vegan Canadian breakfast in Hamburg!

The only disappointment was the vegan chili I tried once for lunch. There was absolutely no flavor in the chili, and I had to add a lot of hot sauce to make it at least somewhat decent. So I recommend going here for breakfast instead. Max-Brauer-Allee 277. Open Wednesday to Monday 11 am to 5 pm.

A friend of mine introduced us to a Turkish/Kurdish restaurant called Bona’me . There are several locations in Germany, and they follow the same concept as Vapiano where you receive a chip card upon entering which keeps track of your orders from different counters and you pay once you leave the restaurant. After placing an order, you receive a disk which later blinks and vibrates to signal that you can pick up your food.

Personally, I’m not a fan of this procedure. It’s highly impersonal and not actually more efficient than the regular way of ordering food. Also, people eating together will not necessarily get their food at the same time which defeats the purpose of going out together in the first place.

So much for the concept. The decoration is absolutely lovely in a style you could describe as modern oriental. Food-wise they don’t have a lot of options for vegans, but the ones they have are really good and filling. The first time we came here I wanted to get the kısır salad but thought that a salad might not be enough so I also ordered a çiftlik saç and got some bread with that as well.

When I got the kısır, I immediately realized I had ordered too much. The salad was so huge that it was definitely filling enough for me (and, by now, you may have realized that I eat a lot!). Of course, I still finished everything, but beware that the meal-sized salad is very filling. Both meals were really good, but the kısır, in particular, was excellent and something I’ve been missing from my life for far too long now as Athens is not really a hot spot for international cuisine.

Note that the regular bread they give you with the salad is not vegan. Also, be aware that the salad can come either as a starter or as a full-sized meal.

While this may not be the most vegan-friendly place on this vegan Hamburg guide I believe it’s a good option for when you go out to eat with friends who are not very open to trying vegan food. Burchardstraße 17. Open Monday to Sunday 10 am to 10 pm.

If you’re in the mood for Indian food and find yourself near the university campus, you can give Gopalam a try. This vegetarian Ayurvedic restaurant will veganize absolutely everything for you if you ask. We started off with some pakoras, the obligatory papadam, and lentil soup. Then I had my first shahi paneer in ages. Shahi paneer had always been my favorite Indian dish when I lived in Montreal . I was really happy to finally be able to have a vegan shahi paneer at Gopalam. Whilte it was good, it was still a long way from what I used to eat in Canada.

However, I have to say that this was one of the least interesting Indian restaurants I’ve ever been to. Somehow it lacks atmosphere, and the presentation of the food didn’t show much effort. On top of that, it seemed that some of their meals were frozen. For example, when I glanced into the kitchen I saw the owner cut open some frozen yellow cubes packaged in plastic which could very well have been the lentil soups for the next table.

I can’t complain about the taste of the food but wouldn’t say this is the best place on this vegan Hamburg guide. It is, however, an option if you’re in the area. Grindelallee 159. Open Monday to Friday 11 am to 9:45 pm, Saturday and Sunday 12 pm to 9:45 pm.

Of course, I can’t ignore the two different Loving Hut locations on this vegan Hamburg guide. Loving Hut is an international vegan restaurant chain and quite popular with vegan travelers.

The first one we tried was a bit of a letdown. I had summer rolls followed by a dish of fried tofu with vegetables and a peanut sauce. While it was tasty and presumably very healthy, the presentation was a bit lackluster, and the flavors were not exactly impressive. This was my first Loving Hut visit, and I couldn’t understand the hype at all. From what I heard, this location is actually expected to close down soon.

But I was convinced by an Instagram follower to give Loving Hut another chance, so I went to their second location in Hamburg . Wow, what a difference! The atmosphere was so much better here. It was a proper restaurant and quite cozy. I ordered a vegan seafood dish which was pretty tasty although not outstanding. But I did have a spectacular chocolate cake for dessert. Markusstraße 2. Open Monday to Friday 11:30 am to 3 pm and 6 pm to 9 pm, Saturday 5:30 pm to 10 pm. Ferdinand-Beit-Straße 7. Open Monday to Friday 12 pm to 3 pm, 5:30 pm to 9 pm, Saturday 6 pm to 10 pm.

Another recommendation from Instagram was Cai Kitchen . As I didn’t have enough time to have dinner there I simply took home some dumplings. But even if I wanted to I wouldn’t have been able to sit there as the tables were already full. This is an authentic Chinese restaurant that used to offer cow’s milk like some of the other places on this vegan Hamburg guide. However, they are now completely vegan. The dumplings I got were very tasty, and I would like to go back and actually eat a proper meal there.

I recently made another attempt at eating at Cai Kitchen, but as the place is so small, I didn’t manage to get a seat. I ordered a tofu soup to go which was very good though. It seems that you really have to get here as soon as they open so you can get a seat, as I’m not sure they take reservations. Glashüttenstraße 85a. Open Monday to Friday 12 pm to 3 pm, 5 pm to 7:30 pm.

For ethnic fast food you can also check out Oses Çiğ Köfte . This food stall in the St. Pauli market hall offers a traditional Turkish/Kurdish street food that was veganized due to necessity. The small meatballs would conventionally be made with raw meat, but due to hygiene laws, the street food version is now vegan with nuts and potatoes as a substitute for meat.

Because ayran is traditionally consumed with çiğ köfte, Oses Çiğ Köfte is not an entirely vegan food stall, but you can also drink water. The food is delicious, and, most importantly, we loved the outstanding service by the friendly lady behind the counter. Neuer Kamp 31. Open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 8 pm.

If you’re looking for vegan sushi, then there are options in Hamburg for that as well. Very Very Veggie Vegan Sushi is a fully vegan sushi place that opened in the summer of 2020 and is located in a residential neighborhood. I once got takeaway from there, and although I wasn’t very impressed with the flavors (the vegan sushi in Amsterdam is significantly better), I think it’s great to be able to get vegan sushi in Hamburg so easily.

Non-vegan sushi places tend to only have very basic vegan options, such as avocado, cucumber, and maybe vegetables and mushrooms. At vegan sushi restaurants, you have so many more exciting options, such as the tofu menu I got from Very Very Veggie Vegan Sushi. Barmbeker Straße 3. Open Tuesday to Friday 12 pm to 3 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm, Saturday and Sunday 2 pm to 8 pm.

For something a little more different from all the other vegan options in Hamburg you should definitely try Dadashi . This fully vegan place is located in a mall so it’s more like a quick eatery at a food court, but the food is really good. They focus primarily on veganized Persian food which made me so happy. I used to love Persian food and had it a lot because we had Persian family friends, but unfortunately, traditional Persian food isn’t very vegan-friendly. I was really excited to be able to order vegan ghormeh sabzi at Dadashi, and it was absolutely delicious.

The service was excellent as well, but that’s of course expected from a Persian place. Even though this isn’t an actual restaurant and the area is not necessarily interesting for tourists, I highly recommend at least having lunch here once so you can have something different from all the other vegan food in Hamburg. Beim Strohhause 8. Open Monday to Saturday 11 am to 8 pm.

If you’re interested in cooking your own vegan Persian food I have a recipe for a legume soup in my post on vegan iftar recipes . And if you want to go even further and travel to Iran as a vegan you should definitely check out the website of Iran Vegan Travel .

If you’re a fan of Korean food then you should opt for dinner at Kini in the bustling Sternschanze neighborhood. There’s a really good vegan Korean restaurant in Amsterdam so I wasn’t too impressed by Kini, but it’s really popular and might be the only place in Hamburg where you can find vegan Korean food. Susannenstraße 15. Open Monday to Thursday 12 pm to 11 pm, Saturday 12 pm to 11:30 pm, Sunday 2 pm to 11 pm. (Note that the kitchen closes at 10 pm on most days and at 11 pm on Saturdays.)

Vegan Vietnamese Food

Finally, there’s Vietnamese food. At this point, Hamburg has more than ten entirely vegan Vietnamese places. Who would have thought? To be fair, most of them seem to have similar if not the same menus which gets a bit boring if you go to Hamburg on a regular basis.

Bao Bao is a lovely place in a residential neighborhood. There is both indoor as well as outdoor seating, and it feels very cozy and intimate. The menu is extensive, and, as a result, I didn’t even know what to order at first. I ended up having the vegan fish and vegetables with spices and herbs. The meal was filling and very tasty. I hadn’t had Vietnamese food in way too long and was thrilled to have the chance to order absolutely anything off the menu.

The service was very good, and it was great to get away from all the tourist crowds and enjoy a meal in a more residential area of Hamburg. I can’t wait to go back. Schrammsweg 10. Open Tuesday to Friday 11:30 am to 10 pm, Saturday 4 pm to 10 pm, Sunday 11:30 am to 10 pm.

The other vegan Vietnamese restaurant on this vegan Hamburg guide is An Vegan House which is definitely one of the best vegan restaurants I have ever been to. This, too, is located in a residential neighborhood so you get to see a different side of Hamburg.

We were lucky enough to get a table for two on the terrace, but the restaurant quickly filled up and was entirely packed within minutes. But there is a reason for the restaurant’s popularity. The food is outstanding. While they have main dishes, it’s far more common here to order various small dishes and share them. We ordered a total of seven small dishes for the two of us which was a great way of trying different items. Every dish tasted heavenly, completely out of this world. It was such a delight to try all these phenomenal foods.

I’d highly recommend making a reservation, but the most important thing is to go here at all. You won’t regret it. An Vegan House is definitely one of my highlights on this vegan Hamburg guide. And people seem to agree because An Vegan House recently opened a second location in the neighborhood of St. Georg.

The second location feels a little less cozy despite being less busy, but that’s probably because it’s so close to central station on a very popular street and there might be more people coming and going. At least, that’s what I felt like. It’s the same menu, and the food is delicious, so since this is a bit easier for tourists to reach you may actually prefer this location. Mühlenkamp 19. Open Monday to Wednesday 11:30 am to 10:30 pm, Thursday to Sunday 11:30 am to 11 pm. Lange Reihe 95. Open Monday to Wednesday 11:30 am to 10:30 pm, Thursday to Sunday 11:30 am to 11 pm.

Another Vietnamese addition to this vegan Hamburg guide is TA Vegan House. Vietnamese cuisine is so delicious, and this restaurant is one of the top-rated vegan restaurants in Hamburg. I have been to both of their locations and really liked the food and the atmosphere. The service was great at both locations as well. Reimarusstraße 13. Open Monday to Thursday 12 pm to 10:30 pm, Friday to Sunday 11:30 am to 11 pm. Neue Große Bergstraße 11. Open Monday to Sunday 11:30 am to 10 pm.

If you’re close to the central station and perhaps still have quite some time until your train, Chay Vegan is your best bet for filling your stomach with some good vegan food. Even my non-vegan brother and mother loved the food here, and at this point, I think my brother has been there more times than me.

The menu is very similar to the other Vietnamese vegan restaurants in Hamburg: different bowls and soups. I think the flavors could be a bit more intense here, but there’s sriracha on the tables so you can adjust the level of spice to your own taste.

The restaurant is very spacious, and I’ve never really experienced it being full so this is a spot where you can easily get a table even in a group. Lilienstraße 9. Open Monday to Friday 11:30 am to 10 pm, Saturday and Sunday 1 pm to 10 pm.

If you’re staying in the Eimsbüttel neighborhood and want to find a place for dinner you don’t have to head all the way to the busier parts of the city. Right in Eimsbüttel you can go to Citta for vegan Vietnamese food. Again, the menu isn’t really different from the other vegan Vietnamese places in Hamburg, but I found the staff here more stressed and less friendly than at the other spots. It’s also very busy, so you may have to make a reservation here. Osterstraße 98. Open Sunday to Thursday 12 pm to 10:30 pm, Friday and Saturday 12 pm to 11 pm.

For a vegan Vietnamese restaurant with a different menu, you should try Lam Vegan . The interior is absolutely gorgeous and the service is absolutely adorable. The menu feels more like what you would get at a non-vegan Vietnamese restaurant in Germany, but everything is 100% vegan. The food is really delicious and very filling. My non-vegan sister fell completely in love with the restaurant and keeps asking me to go back there with her. Kleiner Schäferkamp 14. Open Wednesday to Sunday 12 pm to 10 pm.

Finally, there is Greentable which is a rather new restaurant close to City Hall which makes it a good choice for when you’re sightseeing. Again, nothing new on the menu here, and at this point, I’m wondering if all these vegan Vietnamese restaurants in Hamburg are owned by the same person and simply use different names or if there are really so many people copying An Vegan House which was the first Vietnamese vegan restaurant in Hamburg.

My friend and I weren’t too impressed by this restaurant, but it was okay. I think if it had been the first restaurant of this type I had visited I would have been more excited by it, but by now I’ve had similar food at so many other places that this restaurant didn’t stand out. If you haven’t been to any of the other spots though or are in the area you should definitely consider eating here. Schauenburgerstraße 55. Open Monday to Saturday 12 pm to 10 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 9:30 pm.

Vegan Sweets in Hamburg

While many of the above-mentioned restaurants offer cakes or other sweets, there are two things that I want to mention separately.

First of all, sadly, Hamburg doesn’t have a single vegan ice cream parlor. There are, however, various places that offer vegan ice cream.

I tried L’Italiana Gelateria in Europa Passage. Their vegan options consist of sorbets and are quite refreshing and tasty. In my opinion, they’re a bit too sweet, however. Also, don’t even think about getting more than one flavor because one scoop is huge! Ballindamm 40. Open Monday to Friday 10 am to 8:30 pm, Saturday 9:30 am to 8:30 pm, Sunday 10:30 am to 8 pm.

Secondly, there are Franzbrötchen, a typical cinnamon pastry from Northern Germany that you can’t find in other regions of the country. I have always loved them, but, unfortunately, they are not vegan. I thought it would be easy to find vegan ones, but it actually isn’t. Bakery chain Nur Hier are the only ones that advertise vegan Franzbrötchen (regular and chocolate), but they don’t taste as good as other Franzbrötchen. However, I couldn’t leave them off this vegan Hamburg guide.

But the best thing that has happened is the opening of a total of four vegan doughnut places in Hamburg. Yes, you read that right, there are four different places where you can get a bunch of vegan doughnuts. These are actually two different companies which both have two locations each.

The first vegan doughnut place that opened in Hamburg is Kjeks . I was so excited to find this place and loved their doughnuts so much. My favorite is the Bienenstich one inspired by the traditional German cake of the same name – lots of whipped cream and caramelized almonds. So, so good!

They always have a special of the month which sometimes is more interesting and other times not that intriguing, but their regular options are plentiful so there’s definitely something for everyone at Kjeks – provided you have a sweet tooth. They also have cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. Schanzenstraße 79. Open Monday to Sunday 11 am to 7 pm. Bahrenfelder Straße 216. Open Monday to Sunday 11 am to 7 pm.

Then there’s Brammibal’s Donuts which started in Berlin and finally opened two locations in Hamburg as well. I didn’t think it would be possible, but I like their doughnuts slightly more than the ones by Kjeks even. They taste a little fresher and not overly sweet. But really, I can recommend both of them. Harkortstraße 79e. Open Monday to Friday 12 pm to 7 pm, Saturday 11 am to 7 pm, Sunday 11 am to 6 pm. Neuer Kamp 3. Open Monday to Thursday 11 am to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 9 pm, Sunday 11 am to 7 pm.

Where Not to Go

Because I always want to be honest on this blog I had to create a section on this vegan Hamburg guide for the places that disappointed me.

Golden Temple Teehaus is located in the university quarter of the city which is probably why it’s so cozy. It’s the perfect place to study or to simply chill and relax when the Hamburg weather acts up. There are books and magazines on various issues, and I got my hands on “Born in the Bronx: A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip-Hop” which made my time there so much more enjoyable. The people are very friendly as well and will answer any questions you may have.

That makes it even more disappointing that the food was such a disaster. I went here with a Pakistani friend of mine, and we both ordered a curry, but whoever made the dish has probably never had a curry before. Both dishes were unbelievably bland and tasted like absolutely nothing at all.

I went back for breakfast another day and ordered the waffles, but while these weren’t as horrible as the curry, they were quite dry and not fluffy at all. In addition, I thought the selection of teas was quite limited considering that they call themselves a tea house.

The only thing that I tried here that was really good was the carrot cake so there’s a slight chance that if you stick to the desserts you’ll be much happier here than I was. This could be a great place for vegan food in Hamburg, but I wouldn’t recommend them except for their desserts.

And then there’s Azeitona, a falafel place with two locations. I will refer only to the location in Eimsbüttel here as it has been years since I visited their first location. I will definitely not go back to this location either though.

All I can really say is that these were the worst falafel I have ever had. Dry, flavorless, and there wasn’t even hummus in the pita. The guy behind the counter was either having a bad day or simply didn’t like his job which didn’t improve my perception of Azeitona. All of that for €5 – definitely not worth it when there are so many good falafel places in Hamburg.

Out of the vegan Vietnamese restaurants in Hamburg, I personally wouldn’t recommend Bodhi. The menu is very similar to the one at An Vegan House and TA Vegan House and is just as good. Unfortunately, when I was there one summer evening I saw a mouse running around inside which, even as a vegan, is quite off-putting. I let the guy working there know, and he said they were aware of the issue. They have a second location though which might not have the same issue.

Vegan Hair Salon in Hamburg

That’s it for vegan food in Hamburg, but I have to add something special to this vegan Hamburg guide because Hamburg is home to a fully vegan and cruelty-free hair salon! Yes, you read that right: There’s a hair salon that works exclusively with vegan, cruelty-free products! Can you imagine my excitement when I found out about this and made my appointment?!

That’s not all, however: Schnittstube Verde is also owned and operated by one of the loveliest people you will meet and certainly the coolest hairdresser I’ve ever had! Yasemin is extremely passionate about veganism and very knowledgeable about the subject matter. We exchanged lots of opinions and experiences and also talked about things such as racism in the vegan movement.

You can read all about my experience with the hair dye by Organic Colour Systems that Yasemin uses. I absolutely recommend making an appointment with Yasemin if you’re ever in Hamburg. Zimmerstraße 14. Open Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 3 pm.

Places I Look Forward To

As I haven’t been able to go back for a while to check out the new Hamburg vegan restaurants I wanted to add a separate section for those of you who are currently there. These are vegan spots in Hamburg I haven’t been able to try personally yet but which I’m definitely planning to visit as soon as I can.

The Vegan Eagle : Although this is one of the best-rated vegan restaurants in Hamburg I haven’t managed to visit yet. That’s due to the fact that this restaurant is quite far from the city center (and actually quite close to the airport), but I really want to try it at some point. The food looks really great, and there’s supposed to be a cozy garden as well. Wischhöfen 4. Open Tuesday to Sunday 5 pm to 9 pm.

Vistro : One of the vegan restaurants in Hamburg I’ve been wanting to try for a long time but still haven’t got to around is this vegan pizza place. The reason is simple: It’s a bit far from the center (actually within walking distance of where I used to live), and so I’ve never gotten around to it. But as it’s one of the best-rated places on this vegan Hamburg guide I really have to make it there soon. Bramfelder Chaussee 265. Open Friday to Sunday 5 pm to 9 pm.

Kurkuma : Cooking courses are all the rage among travelers, but they can be tricky for vegans. This school is fully vegan and offers courses on different cuisines. What’s great is that some of the courses on international cuisine are actually offered by people from that culture though it would be nice to see more of that. Methfesselstraße 28.

Schmako : Another place on this vegan Hamburg guide I’ve been wanting to try for a while but still haven’t made my way to, this vegan food truck is located outside of a club in the summer. Neuer Kamp 30. Open Thursday 5 pm to 10 pm.

Where to Stay in Hamburg

In order to be able to reach most of these fabulous places quickly, you should book your accommodation in the center of Hamburg. Here, you can find some hotels in Hamburg.

If you’re looking for a completely vegan place to stay Green Haven is a B&B in a residential neighborhood that looks like a lovely place to spend a few days. Mühlenstieg 3.

To sum things up, there is a lot of good vegan food in Hamburg, and this vegan Hamburg guide keeps growing. Whether you’re in the mood for fast food, Vietnamese food, or want a filling vegan breakfast, you will not have to search long.

Nice to know veganism seems to be jumping in Germany! I think we get so wrapped up over here with the struggles the US has in terms of new fast food vegan options that we forget this kind of progress has to be made in other countries as well. It’s truly a global effort.

Also a lot of this stuff looks AMAZING.

Yes, actually Germany is a very vegan-friendly country!

Thank you so much for sharing this! Everything sounds so delicious! I’ve always wanted to go to Hamburg and I am a Vegan and sometimes struggle to eat out. I am going to bookmark your article so I have it when I eventually go!

Traveling as a vegan can be such a struggle sometimes, but Hamburg is fantastic for vegans. I hope you get to try these places for yourself soon!

My Vegan Hamburg Guide!

Much like Leipzig , Hamburg came as a pleasant surprise, with chilled vibes all around and throngs of alternative, cool and independent shops and cafés. Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s located not so far from Berlin , but I found Hamburg to be similar in some ways — be it in the cool nature of the stylish locals or the general overall diversity. As such, the German port city obviously had several vegan restaurants for me to sample, and, what the hell, a fully vegan bed and breakfast! The vegan Hamburg restaurants, including some fantastic vegan breakfast Hamburg hotspots, get my stamp of approval! Without further ado, I’d like to present you a short list of all the delicious vegan food I sampled in my 48 hours in Hamburg .

THE VEGAN HAMBURG GUIDE

1. lebeleicht.

LEBELEICHT hamburg vegan

Lebeleicht is one of the prettiest vegan restaurants Hamburg has. It’s a beautifully designed café in which you can grab a light bite and a healthy dose of cold-pressed green juice, a smoothie or a health shot (ginger, turmeric, etc). Most of the food here is vegan, but beware that some of the drinks contain cow’s milk, bee pollen or honey . Lebeleicht has a good selection of breakfast and lunch items, including smoothie bowls, soups, salads, and sandwiches. They also offer a one up to five-day juice cleanse programs, something that is always up my street. A super healthy vegan brunch Hamburg spot!

2. STADTSALAT

stadtsalat hamburg

I arrived in Hamburg pretty late, and I was tired and hungry. Having vegan salads, bowls and treats delivered right to my Bed and Breakfast’s door from Stadtsalat was nothing short of the best thing ever. They have a great selection of filling salads and bowls with good protein content and very tasty dressings, and you can always make your own and/or add anything you want to any of their existing menu items. Also, all their desserts are vegan. The best options for lazy butts for sure! I think most of their packaging is biodegradable too!

3. FROINDLICHST (great for Sunday Vegan Breakfast

froindlichst hamburg

The Hamburg vegan scene isn’t only health-minded, there are also some greasy spoon joints, and Froindlichst was one of my faves! This is THE place to be for the best vegan hamburgers in Hamburg. And cheesy fries. And sweet potato fries. And pizza. And… that’s all I had room for! Possibly not the healthiest option around, however, they do have a salad menu. But I mean, come on! You have to try the burgers! The Chili Cheeze burger came warmly recommended, and it certainly did not disappoint! How can anything disappoint when it’s served with a side of guacamole anyway? They serve brunch on Sunday too.

4. HAPPENPAPPEN

happenpappen hamburg

HappenPappen is yet another cozy and beautiful space to linger into in Hamburg. Super friendly staff and a daily changing menu based on local ingredients that are in season. It’s a very convivial space with large tables shared by multiple people. Sample menu items include vegan burgers, quiches, and curries. Several cakes are always on offer and the coffee is great. Truly, one of the nicest places in town for some hearty, delicious and healthy food, so don’t miss it! Just make sure you check the opening hours first.

Feldstraße 36 Facebook // Directions

Nasch is cool, alternative and laidback and they happened to have the best spaghetti Bolognese I’ve had in some time the day I was there! Located in an artist neighborhood, come by and relax with some delicious coffee, paninis, quiches, and spreads, or let yourself be surprised by the daily changing lunch menu. Leave room for cakes, pies and cookies. They too have cow milk, I am not sure why.

Caffamacherreihe 49 Facebook // Directions

6. MAMALICIOUS

mamalicious hamburg

An all vegan Canadian-style diner in the heart of Hamburg is like… Something I really like in a place I really really like. Haha! Tofu scramble with vegan bacon, you say? Fluffy pancake stack with maple syrup and vegan butter just like my mama used to make? YAAASSSS!!! Vegan mac and cheese? OMG, double YAASSSSS! Nice service, fun and spacious interior, lots of vegan cake to pick from, really, Mamalicious can’t get much better!

Max-Brauer-Allee 277 Facebook // Directions

7. SLIM JIM’S PIZZA

slim jim vegan pizza hamburg

As I’m skimming through my Hamburg photos and writing this guide, I’m just reminiscing how freaking cool Hamburg is. Slim Jim’s is not only freaking cool but has amazing pizza too. Pick one of the ready-made pizzas on offer or make your own (they have vegan cheese and vegan salami!), grab a cold beer and chill in one of the coolest spaces in town. It’s understandably a pretty popular spot, so the waiting time can be a bit lengthy, but it’s well worth it and people are beautiful, and OMG I love Hamburg and Slim Jim’s sort of encapsulates all of that in one perfect pizza!

WHERE TO STAY IN HAMBURG

Green haven vegan bed & breakfast.

green haven bed and breakfast hamburg

Hamburg can pride itself on having the only vegan bed and breakfast in the whole of Germany! You’ve read that right! Located on a quiet street just a short train ride to the city center, Green Haven is a little oasis of eco-conscious peace and quiet where you will find absolutely nothing that is unethical or made of animal and a lot of cushy comfort! There are a few rooms with shared bathrooms and an apartment (we had the Oberdeck apartment which was adorable) and there is even a little trailer in the back garden in the warmer months. Our host Christiane and her family were just the sweetest and were full of great advice, and Christiane’s vegan breakfasts were the best way to start our day.

Heartfelt thanks to Green Haven Bed & Breakfast. All opinions are my own.

Thanks for this informative post! I will definitely check out some of your recommendations next time I am in Hamburg!

You bet! Let me know when you visit! 🙂

' src=

Ha, I can’t believe there’s a vegan Canadian-style diner in the middle of Hamburg! How random and fun. I wish i’d known there was a vegan B&B in Hamburg when I was there (if it existed then), I would have loved to stay there!

So random isn’t it! haha!

Sightseeing Hamburg - Top Things to See and Do

Table of Contents

Sightseeing Hamburg

Hamburg in northern Germany is a city that I knew little about, until I recently had the chance to  join a press trip focused on sustainability in Hamburg.

The fact that the city authorities care about sustainability was already a big plus in my book, so I was looking forward to the trip.

Once I arrived, I discovered that Hamburg is a very cool city with plenty of sightseeing opportunities. It’s a port city, and most sights and activities are centered around the water.

Europe’s second largest port, Hamburg is filled with shipyards, docks, boats and canals. There are two rivers that run through the city, the Elbe and the Alster, and also two adjoining lakes.

A number of easy day trips can be made from Hamburg to destinations such as the Wadden Sea and the fairytale town of Bremen. But with so many things to do in Hamburg itself, you can entertain yourself here for several days without ever traveling beyond the city limits.

I found it really handy to have the Hamburg Card when sightseeing in Hamburg. With the card, you get free transport on all buses, trains and harbor ferries, plus discounted entry to more than 150 attractions.

Here are the top things to see and do in Hamburg:

Speicherstadt

Entrance: free

Speicherstadt Hamburg Germany

The brick warehouses of the Speicherstadt

This area became Hamburg’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, and it’s not hard to see why. Speicherstadt is the world’s largest contiguous warehouse district, and its rows of 19th-century Gothic brick warehouses lined up along the canals are quite striking.

Goods from all over the world, such as coffee, tea, spices and tobacco, were stored here. Nowadays, the district is home to a number of attractions, such as the International Maritime Museum and Minitur Wunderland (see below).

The warehouses are built on oak piles hidden under the water, while everything above the waterline is a dark red brick. They are beautifully lit up at night by 800 spotlights.

You can admire the warehouses from one of the many bridges spanning the canals, or take a canal tour on a barge to see them from a different angle. These boat tours start from the St. Pauli landing bridges, but check the departure times carefully, as they vary with the tides.

Miniatur Wunderland

Entrance: 13 euros, or 12 with the Hamburg Card

Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg

The model of Rome, Italy at Miniatur Wunderland is pretty accurate!

As you might have guessed, the name of this attraction means Miniature Wonderland. Located inside one of the Speicherstadt warehouses, this attraction is often described as the largest model railway system in the world.

And while that’s true, you’ll see a whole lot more than just model trains here. The trains pass by scenery and landmarks that from many different countries, all of which will be instantly recognizable to anyone who’s been to those places.

My favorite part was the miniature Rome, because it’s a city I have lived in and know very well. I can confirm that all the Roman monuments depicted  were very accurate, so I can only imagine that the rest of the models must be too. It’s incredible how the model makers have included so much detail.

The creators are constantly adding new elements to Miniatur Wunderland, some of which portray very current events. For example, in the Arctic section, there is a miniature Greta Thunberg standing on an iceberg protesting the lack of action on climate change.

And a miniature version of the new Elbphilharmonie (see below) was recently inaugurated with much fanfare. In total, the display currently includes 13,000 meters of track and 3,660 buildings and bridges.

Miniature Wunderland is one of Hamburg’s most popular attractions and can get very busy. However, the opening hours are quite long, and on weekends they stay open until midnight.

If you go outside peak hours, you can avoid queuing up for tickets. The Miniatur Wunderland website shows the expected wait time for each hour of the day, so check this before you go and try to hit one of the least busy times (generally in the early morning or late evening)

Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

Elbphilharmonie Hamburg Germany

What do you think, is it a wave, a sail or an iceberg?

Affectionately known as “Elphi” by the locals, this new concert hall just opened in 2017 and has already become one of Hamburg’s most famous landmarks. There are actually three concert halls inside, as well as a restaurant, a hotel and a public viewing platform.

The glass construction has been said to represent a wave, a hoisted sail of a boat, or even an iceberg. Whichever one is true, it’s clear that the designers were mindful of the importance of water for this port city.

Elbphilharmonie sits on a peninsula on the banks of the River Elbe in the new urban development project called HafenCity. It’s surrounded by water on three sides. The viewing platform, called The Plaza, sits 37 meters above ground.

As you can imagine, the views from here are spectacular. You’ll be able to see the busy port as well as the Speiicherstadt. In fact, Elphi itself is built on top of an old Speicherstadt warehouse. This is a great place to come for a drink at sunset.

Access to the platform is ticketed but free. Just go to the ticket booth and ask for a free ticket, then ride up the beautiful, curving escalator to the top.

Alternatively, it’s also possible to book your ticket in advance online for 2 euros. This shouldn’t really be necessary, though. The line may look long, but it moves pretty quickly.

St. Michaelis Church and Tower

St Michaelis Church Hamburg Germany

Sightseeing Hamburg - St. Michaelis is the most famous Baroque church in northern Germany.

St. Michaelis is the most famous Baroque church in northern Germany. It was first built in 1641, but it has been destroyed and rebuilt three times since then.

If you’re lucky, someone will be playing one of the three pipe organs inside the church when you visit. It’s very popular with tour groups, so it can get a bit crowded inside.

When planning your visit, keep in mind that a church service takes place from 11:45am to 12:30pm every day, and tourist visits are not possible during that time.

While entry to the church itself is free, it costs 5 euros to climb up the tower during the day, or 4 euros if you have a Hamburg Card. From the top you have great views over the city, and you can also watch a panoramic multimedia presentation about Hamburg and its history.

If you want some exercise you can take the stairs, but there’s also an elevator available. The tower is also open at night, when it costs 10.50 euros, or 9.50 with the Hamburg Card.

With the entrance ticket, you are allowed to enter twice on the same evening. This way, you can admire the skyline before sunset and then come back to see the city lit up at night.

Hamburg Rathaus

Entrance: only by guided tour arranged in advance

Hamburg Rathaus

The imposing façade of the Hamburg Rathaus

The Hamburg city hall, or Rathaus in German, was built in the late 19th century in Neo-Renaissance style.

Its sandstone façade is quite imposing and completely dominates the busy square on which it stands. To give you an idea of just how big the Rathaus is, it has more rooms than Buckingham Palace!

The building houses not just city government offices but also the state parliament, and it can only be visited on a guided tour. Most visitors are happy just to admire it from the outside.

Inner Alster Lake

Inner Alster Lake in Hamburg Germany

The peaceful shores of the Inner Alster Lake

This attractive lake was created in the 13th century, when the Alster River was dammed. The Inner Alster is much smaller and more picturesque than its sister lake, the Outer Alster. Surrounded by grassy shores on three sides, it’s a popular area for jogging as well as water sports like rowing and sailing.

The canals near the lake are lined with shopping arcades, such as the Venetian-inspired Alsterarkaden. On its west side, the lake is flanked by the Jungfernsteig, a popular shopping promenade whose name translates roughly as “the Maiden’s Walk”.

In days gone by, wealthy families would come here for a Sunday stroll to show off their unwed daughters in the hopes of finding husbands for them.

While I can’t promise you will find a spouse here, I can promise you a delicious vegan burger! At the food court of the Europa Passage shopping mall, you’ll find Vincent Vegan. This place serves up amazing plant-based burgers, including some made with the famous Beyond Meat patty. And don’t miss the sweet potato fries!

Germany has been at the forefront of the vegan movement for some time now, so it's no surprise that there are plenty more great vegan eats in the city. I’ll be publishing a vegan guide to Hamburg in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that!

Entrance: 15 euros, or 12.50 with the Hamburg Card

St Georg steamship on Inner Alster Lake Hamburg

Take a ride on the last steamship still operating in Hamburg.

A great way to experience the Inner Alster is by taking a ride on the St. Georg steamship. There are several boats that ply the waters of the popular lake, but the St Georg is the only true Alster steamship still in operation.

It has been faithfully restored and is operated by a crew of three -- the captain, the engineer and the conductor -- just as it would have been in the old days.

By the way, St. Georg is also the name of a hip, gay neighbourhood that lies a little further east, on the banks of the Upper Alster. It’s known for its hip bars and cafés, art studios and quirky design shops. If you have the time, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Planten un Blomen

Planten un Blomen park in Hamburg

The beautiful Planten un Blomen park is a great place to relax.

This beautiful park extends from St. Pauli to the Alster River. Its name means “plants and flowers” in Low German, and you’ll certainly find plenty of those here.

If your visit falls between May and September, come at 10pm to catch the water light show on the lake, with colored fountains and accompanying music.

And at any time of year, you can enjoy the botanical garden, the tropical greenhouse, and the largest Japanese garden in Europe, where you can experience a classic tea ceremony.

Also look for the rose garden, which has about 300 different varieties of roses. Many free concerts held here in the park. And kids and adults alike will love the huge open-air skating rink that converts from an ice rink in the winter to a roller rink in the summer.

Entrance: not allowed

Telemichel TV Tower in Hamburg

The best views of the Telemichel TV Tower are from Planten un Blomen.

This huge television tower was built in the 1960s. Its officially named the Heinrich Hertz Turm after a Germany physicist, but locals affectionately call it the “Telemichel”. In case you didn’t catch the reference, it’s a nod to Hamburg’s other famous tower, the one at St. Michaelis Church.

The total height of the tower is 279.8 meters. There used to be a restaurant and observation deck up top, but the tower has been closed to visitors for a couple of decades now because it doesn’t conform to current fire escape regulations.

City authorities are seeking investors willing to make the costly conversion, so hopefully one day it will reopen again. In any case, the tower stands just near the exit of Planten un Blomen, and you have a great view of it from the back of the gardens.

St. Pauli Landing Stages (Landungsbrücken)

St. Pauli Landing Stages (Landungsbrücken)

The St. Pauli Landing Stages, or Landungsbrücken in German.

From these floating docks, you have great views of the massive cruise ships and container ships that pass through Hamburg’s port. It’s a great place to come just for a stroll, and there are lots of attractions, such as Rickmer Rickmers, Cap San Diego, and the U-434 Submarine listed below.

This whole area is so huge that it’s easy to forget you’re walking on a floating platform. The first pontoons were built here in 1839 as docks for steam ships.

Nowadays, harbour boat tours leave from here. One popular boat tour company is Rainer Abicht, which offers one-hour harbour cruises for 20 euros, or 16 with the Hamburg Card. English commentary is available.

Rickmer Rickmers

Entrance: 5 euros, or 4.20 with the Hamburg Card

Rickmer Rickmers ship in Hamburg

Sightseeing Hamburg - explore on board the Rickmer Rickmers ship

Rickmer Rickmers was first launched in 1896 as a full-rigged ship made of steel. Over the years, it was propelled by wind, then steam, and finally diesel.

It has now been fully restored as a museum ship, and visitors can explore the different rooms, including the officers’ quarters and the engine room. There’s also a restaurant and an escape room on board.

Cap San Diego

Entrance: 7 euros, or 5.90 with the Hamburg Card

Cap San Diego ship in Hamburg

Cap San Diego was the largest freight ship in the world when it was built.

Another museum ship, this one is much larger than the Rickmer Rickmers. In fact, when it was built in 1961 it was the largest freight ship in the world. Its nickname is the “White Swan of the South Atlantic”.

Cap San Diego has been permanently anchored here since 1986, but it’s still seaworthy and sometimes sets off on voyages with passengers as a floating museum.

As an interesting alternative to a hotel, you can spend the night in one of the passenger cabins or the captain’s quarters. There’s also a restaurant and musical performances on board.

Old Elbe Tunnel

Old Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg Germany

A walk through the Old Elbe Tunnel is a great option for rainy day sightseeing in Hamburg.

This pedestrian tunnel opened in 1911 and passes below the Elbe River at a depth of more than 20 meters.

It was the first river tunnel in continental Europe and was considered to be a marvel of civil engineering when it opened.

Now it’s a nostalgic piece of Hamburg history that is still used by locals to commute on foot or by bicycle from one side of the city to the other. A walk through the tunnel is also popular with tourists and is a great activity for a rainy day.

U-434 Submarine

Entrance: 9 euros

U-434 Submarine in Hamburg Germany

Get a taste of life on a Russian submarine on the U-434.

This Russian submarine is the largest hunting and espionage submarine in the world. The Russians built it in 1976 and used it for spying throughout the Cold War.

It can reach a depth of 400 meters, though nowadays it stays above water near the St. Pauli Fish Market. Visitors can go inside and experience the sparse and cramped living conditions that the crew endured.

The Reeperbahn in Hamburg Germany

The bright neon lights of the Reeperbahn.

Reeperbahn is Hamburg’s red light district and is nicknamed die sündigste Meile (the most sinful mile). It was made famous in an old song called “On the Reeperbahn at Half Past Midnight”, which just about every German person knows.

The main drag is pretty quiet during the day, but it comes alive at night with table dance clubs, brothels and sex shops, as well as more mundane pubs, student bars and hamburger joints.

Speaking of hamburgers, be sure to grab a meal at the Fried Club, an all-vegan burger joint inside the Bidges & Sons eco-streetwear clothing store. Their rooftop terrace offers a great view of all the goings on down on the Reeperbahn.

This is undoubtedly the liveliest entertainment and nightlife district in Hamburg, although Sternschanze is starting to catch up.

Wilhemsburg

Architecture in Wilhemsburg Germany

Get off the beaten pack and discover Wilhemsburg before everyone else does.

Wilhemsburg was historically a poor district where Hamburg’s dock workers lived. Many of them were left unemployed when advances in cargo ship logistics made their jobs obsolete.

Nowadays, Wilhemsburg is a very multicultural area with 160 different nationalities represented, and it’s also home to many students. The whole area is being transformed into a showcase for sustainable building and community living.

As you wander around the neighborhood, you’ll see signs explaining the different building techniques used in the “case study houses” to create eco-friendly and affordable housing.

There is plenty of green space here, especially Wilhelmsburger Inselpark and Heuckenlock Nature Reserve. A fun way to experience Wilhemsburg is by renting a canoe to paddle along the many canals.

Walking Tours of Hamburg

Sandemans new europe walking tour.

This well-known tour company offers tip-based tours of the main attractions in Hamburg , plus fixed-price city tours of St. Pauli and the harbor. There’s also a sightseeing tour of Speicherstadt and HafenCity.

Shopping in Hamburg

Stuckgut is the city's first zero waste shop. You’ll find it inside the Rindermarkthalle (“cattle market hall”), which opened as a market and food hall in September 2014.

Bridge & Tunnel

This sustainable slow fashion label based in Wilhemsburg makes bags, cushions and fashion accessories from used denim, and they employ refugees and other disadvantaged people in Hamburg. Upcycling and the sustainable use of raw materials is what they’re all about.

I had the chance to visit the Bridge & Tunnel workshop as part of the sustainable Hamburg press tour, and I loved seeing the photos of the employees pinned up on the wall. Each item for sale has a tag with the name of the person who made it, so it was wonderful to be able to put faces to the names.

The workshop is not really a retail space, but you can order their products online through their website or donate your old jeans.

Hotels in Hamburg

Raphael hotel wȁlderhaus.

Raphael Hotel Walderhaus in Hamburg

Getting back to nature at the Raphael Hotel Walderhaus in Hamburg

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this Wilhelmsburg hotel, which is focused on sustainability and the forest. In fact, the name Wȁlderhaus means “forest house”. It was an obvious choice for our press trip, which was focused on sustainability in Hamburg.

Wȁlderhaus is a cooperative project between the Raphael hotel chain and an environmental organization that protects the forests in Germany. The hotel is built mostly of wood and has an “inhabited façade”, meaning that it provides shelter for many birds and small animals.

Each room in the hotel is named after a type of tree, and a trunk or branch of that tree features in the décor of the room. Furnishings are rustic, made of unfinished wood, and the toiletries are fully biodegradable and cruelty-free (though not all of them are vegan).

There’s also a science center exhibit on the premises. It’s kind of like a natural history museum that teaches visitors about the forest and the plants and animals that live in it.

I decided not to visit the exhibit when I saw that they have taxidermy displays there. I was uncomfortable with looking at the bodies of dead animals, especially since I thought they might have been killed just to be put on display.

It turns out, most animals in taxidermy displays are donated to museums after they are already dead . Knowing this, I’m more comfortable from an ethical perspective with visiting the Walderhaus Science Center than I would be with visiting the Tierpark Hagenbeck zoo, for example.

For a fully vegan experience, check out Green Haven Vegan Bed & Breakfast. I didn’t get a chance to visit this place this time around, but I would love to stay here the next time I return to Hamburg.

The trailer out on the terrace looks like a cosy place for a short stay, and they also offer larger bedrooms and even a full apartment.

The furniture is mostly upcycled or reused, the towels and bed linen are fair trade certified and made of organic cotton, and all detergents and other products used are vegan. Human children and fur babies are welcome.

No it’s Brucke 7.” In the end we went to Brucke 1 - like it told us on the email and got on a boat. It ended up being the right boat for the 1:30 tour and we left at 1:02! Once we got on, everyone else on the boat had been offered beverages. No one offered us any. As for the actual tour, it needed more time near the HafenCity for me. It spent about 10-15 minutes in that area and the rest of it was about shipping and industry. Odd. Strange. Ok. Read more Written February 28, 2024
  • Tiffany N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfect for historical knowledge and experience The city has such a rich history that is thoroughly explained and highlighted all throughout the tour. There is an app for English speakers to listen to as they take the tour. The app was a bit out of order, but easy enough to navigate. They offer inside seating or up on the back deck. Overall, it was the highlight of my time in Hamburg during a day stop on a cruise. Lovely walk from the cruise terminal to get to the port, with a stroll through the city's famous tunnel. I was also able to visit some of the places that we visited while in the harbor. Read more Written February 26, 2024

The ferry was warm, and the large windows allowed an excellent view. Where to Find Vegan Breakfast & Brunch Eats All Week in Hamburg

#1 isabella glutenfreie pâtisserie.

Alte Oberpostdirektion, Stephanspl. 1-3, 20354 Hamburg, Germany Vegan and gluten-free friends, you’ve found paradise! This gluten-free patisserie is vegan-friendly and amazing — seriously, I am not exaggerating even a tiny bit. If I could come here all of the time, I would be super happy, but my pants probably wouldn’t fit. This might be a trade-off I am willing to make.

Anyway, back to the vegan breakfast eats! For a more traditional German breakfast feast, check out Isabella’s Vegan Cheesy Delight (house-made bread, a selection of vegan cheeses, with fig mustard, and more). In addition to feasting on bread and cheese, you’ll also find a massive lineup of house-made granola that you can enjoy with soy yogurt, house-made quiche, and so many pastries! Every day, their display case is filled with a variety of freshly made sweet breakfast treats like croissants, cinnamon snails, banana cake, and more.

#2 Mamalicious

Max-Brauer-Allee 277, 22769 Hamburg, Germany This all-American-inspired vegetarian diner is slinging massive stacks of fluffy chocolate chip pancakes and savory tofu scrambles loaded with extra crispy potatoes all day long! The portions are absolutely hearty — this isn’t a brunching experience for meek eaters; come hungry! As soon as you see these breakfast plates, you’ll understand why there’s always a line on the weekend (go early).

On top of comfort-food breakfast favorites, they also have a sinful lineup of special coffee drinks topped with coconut whipped cream and boozy brunch mimosas — is there a better way to start the day?

#3 Katers Köök – Veganes Deli & Katzencafé

Kleiner Schäferkamp 24, 20357 Hamburg, Germany Have you ever thought, you know, I’d like to share my breakfast with a kitty cat? Well, if you have, you don’t have just one chance to do that; you have two (the next spot, too) in Hamburg. This lovely, modern café rescued multiple cats from around Europe that get to call this delicious vegan café home!

In between chin scratches, the chefs at this café are cooking up a diverse mix of breakfast fare — German-style pancakes filled with apples or strawberry and rhubarb or more traditional platters of fresh bread with yummy spreads, nut butter, veggies, and more. No breakfast would be complete without a delicious oat milk latte enhanced with their house-made caramel syrup.

One more bonus: they have a ton of gluten-free options (even the pancakes)!

#4 Katzentempel Hamburg Hafencity

Überseeboulevard 2-4, 20457 Hamburg, Germany Remember how I said you have two opportunities to enjoy breakfast with a kitty? Well, here’s the second one in Hamburg’s beautiful Hafencity! Just like at Katers Köök, these kitties have been rescued and now get to call the Katzentempel home.

If you show up here downright hangry, these cats have just the thing for you: their special Hangover Breakfast! This feast is filled with baked beans, tofu scramble, house-made bread, and more! It’s like an English vegan breakfast meets German breakfast kind of feast. If that didn’t tickle your fancy, then maybe a croissant breakfast sandwich or slice of toasted banana bread will! One neat fact about this spot: it’s actually a franchise! There are multiple locations throughout Germany — if you love cats and vegan food, you could open one, too!

#5 JUICERY by Em

Neuer Pferdemarkt 12, 20359 Hamburg, Germany After a few too many stacks of fluffy maple syrup-covered pancakes and veggie sausages, you might be looking for a spot for a superfood boost; this is it! You’ll be smitten as soon as you walk into this bubblegum pink café — it’s the cutest spot for a mini Insta-worthy photo shoot or to meet up with your favorite people.

On the superfood side, they’ve got a colorful lineup of smoothies and smoothie bowls enhanced with the antioxidant powers of spirulina, crunchy seeds, fresh fruit, and more. If you’re not feeling superfood-y, no worries; they also have a variety of freshly baked vegan waffles topped with strawberries, maple syrup, and dusted with powdered sugar!

#6 Bistro Ivy

Hopfensack 8, 20457 Hamburg, Germany This quaint vegetarian café will delight you with its quirky pancake presentation and heart-topped lattes! All week long, you can roll in here for a stack of golden pancakes topped with fresh fruit and drizzled with caramel or a savory feast of scrambled tofu with fresh herbs and veggies. But don’t dilly dally getting there; breakfast is only served until 11:30 AM during the week and 4 PM on the weekend.

It’s also conveniently located near the train station and Rathaus, making it an ideal spot to kick off a day of sightseeing throughout the city!

#7 was wir wirklich LIEBEN

Hegestraße 28, 20251 Hamburg, Germany You can zoom into this hip vegetarian eatery and grab a cinnamon snail and a latte to go, or take a seat on the spacious patio and linger awhile over a colorful breakfast feast! The well-marked menu has plenty of options for vegans, from green giant-approved avocado toast to bowls of muesli topped with fresh fruit and soy yogurt.

To add more color to your morning, don’t miss their smoothie lineup — a fruity and fun mix of fresh berries and veggies. There’s no better way to start the day.

#8 ÆNDRÈ

Lehmweg 31A, 20251 Hamburg, Germany (Deli location) Schlüterstraße 86, 20146 Hamburg, Germany (Restaurant location) No matter if you visit their deli or restaurant location, you’re in for a chic meets health dining experience. This boho plant-based brand exudes Anthropologie vibes, and if you’ve ever visited one of those, you know how difficult it is not to want to buy just about everything; the feeling is the same here.

The entire menu centers around creating seasonal dishes bursting with all the good-for-you things and no refined sugar or wheat — almost everything is gluten-free. In the morning, you’ll find eye-catching bowls filled with house-made granola and yogurt, bright green avocado smeared across toast, a rainbow lineup of fresh juice, and much more.

#9 ima vegan

Lappenbergsallee 36, 20257 Hamburg, Germany Although vegan pastries are the name of the game at this modern meets slightly retro café, you shouldn’t miss their small breakfast lineup. Each breakfast item is a play on their name, a declaration of sorts of maybe who you are? Well, you can be the judge of that.

Maybe you’re single and go for a traditional platter of house-made bread, jam, cheese, granola, and yogurt, or perhaps you’re a double (large enough for two)? If you’re not feeling either of those, maybe you’re a little French instead (house-made croissant with jam)?

#10 The Good One Café

Eimsbütteler Chaussee 71, 20259 Hamburg, Germany Just down the street from Mamalicious is another can’t-miss breakfast spot with a kaleidoscope of sweet and savory breakfast dishes. This plant-based café excels at taking basic breakfast favorites and giving them a head-turning makeover.

If you’re feeling salty, check out their creative toasts topped with cheese, caramelized onion, mushrooms, truffle oil, or a giant breakfast burrito filled with scrambled tofu. If you’re more of a sweet breakfast eater, you won’t want to skip their adorable mini stacks of fluffy pancakes topped with caramelized banana and maple syrup.

Hamburg Weekend Vegan Brunch Spots

#11 café koppel.

Koppel 66, Lange Reihe 75, 20099 Hamburg, Germany For over 35 years, this vegetarian café has been pushing a plant-centric agenda. Grab a table next to its large, sun-filled windows on the main floor or take a seat up in the loft for a fun people brunching perspective.

Bread lovers will be over the moon for their weekend brunch menu. For a carb-filled start to the day, check out their Xtra Vegana (two rolls, house-made nut butter, veggie meats, muesli, and more); if that’s a little too heavy, go for the Vegan Sweetie (a single roll with jam, butter, and nut butter) or an order of scrambled tofu. They also have a diverse lineup of fresh juice, specialty tea, coffee, and more.

#12 Froindlichst

Barmbeker Str. 169, 22299 Hamburg, Germany This mega charming and delicious vegan comfort food brand was developed by a group of friends who lovingly call themselves the Three Musketeers (they also have a location in vegan-friendly Berlin ). They’re on a mission to create a welcoming space for people to fall in love with cruelty-free food. Well, I think they’ve succeeded.

On Sundays, their Winterhude location has a special brunch menu that features a delicious mix of savory and sweet eats. The menu changes every week but never disappoints! Reservations are encouraged (via their website) — you don’t want to miss it.

Pierdrei Hotel Hafencity is located, as the name says in the quarter of Hafencity and Speicherstadt. It’s an upscale hotel and ideal if you like to stay close to the center of town, in one of the upcoming neighborhoods of the city.

Katzentemple, Hamburg: A white cat with stripes sitting on a bench.

Rescue cat and vegan breakfast @ Katzentempel

Only a 2-minute walk from the hotel you can find the Katzentempel. The Katzentempel is a vegetarian cat cafe that has an extensive menu with vegan options. The vegan scrambled eggs here are some of the best I had in my life!

A little further, 10 minutes from the hotel, you can find another outstanding vegetarian cafe with delicious vegan breakfast options, Ivy Bistro. The “Stulle Deluxe” with avocado tartar and fried tofu is awesome.

100% vegan hotel near hamburg

Let’s say you’re on a road trip through Germany and you absolutely prefer to stay at a fully vegan hotel. That is possible too if you don’t mind staying a one-and-a-half-hour drive away from the center of Hamburg!

Ahead Burghotel

Ahead Burghotel is a fully vegan eco-hotel located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe Brandenburg. It is a protected castle that is surrounded by a 5 hectare certified organic castle garden on the river Löcknitz.

Ahead Eco and Vegan Hotel in Lenzen, Germany.

The sustainable hotel resort offers gorgeous rooms, a large sun terrace, a breakfast winter garden, and yoga and spa facilities. Meals are taken in the fully plant-based on-site restaurant, place to V .

Not only the restaurant is vegan but also the room furnishings and cosmetics are 100% plant-based.

Final thoughts

Hamburg: waterway and buidlings in Speicherstadt

Speicherstadt, Hamburg

As you can see, there aren’t any fully vegan hotels in the center of Hamburg. There are however a few interesting options that cater to vegans or hotels in the vicinity of a few excellent vegan breakfast places in the city.

On my next trip to Hamburg, I think I would stay at Schlaflounge because it’s close to my two favorite vegan breakfast spots in the city, Good One Café and Katers Köök.

Alternatively, on a road trip, you can stay in the fully vegan Ahead Burghotel which has won many awards for its sustainable practices.

Dear Abby: My wife is so obsessed with being vegan it’s ruining our marriage

  • Published: Mar. 22, 2024, 3:35 a.m.

Picture of Dear Abby, advice columnist

  • Abigail Van Buren

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been teachers since 1999. We married in 2011. She became vegan in 2017. It helped her beat diabetes, which I love. However, she’s pure vegan for animal rights and listens to vegan podcasts all day long after teaching and on the weekends. I mean all day, EVERY day with earbuds in. I have to say, “Knock, Knock” to even talk with her.

Right now, she’s listening to podcasts and messaging vegan people on social media and doesn’t even realize I’m typing. I love my wife, but I can’t escape the frustration of not being able to have a conversation with her about anything.

We have no kids together, but I raised her son from 7 years old. He moved to live with his dad because of her obsessions with work and veganism. I love her, but the fridge is filled with kale. Should I stay, or should I go? -- AFTERTHOUGHT IN OREGON

DEAR AFTERTHOUGHT: Tap your wife on the shoulder and ask her to remove her earbuds. When she does, give her an earful. Tell her you love her but you need a partner who is willing to be more of a companion than she has become. Tell her you shouldn’t have to ask permission to talk to her because of her preoccupation (obsession) with her podcasts.

If you want food in the house that isn’t vegan, go out and buy some. And if she’s unwilling or unable to accept and adapt, try marriage counseling before calling a lawyer. The marriage you have described is not a happy one, or you wouldn’t have written to me.

Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Contact Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.
