The true answer to this question is, that it depends. Your travel budget for the Maldives depends on a whole bunch of factors, from accommodation and flights to the smaller stuff like souvenirs and sightseeing, food, and drink.

I’m not going to lie: flying to the Maldives is expensive. It’s not the sort of place you can just get to by hopping on a budget airline. This goes especially for those who’ll be flying in from either Europe, Australia, or North America.

Flights can be made cheaper by flying during shoulder season (March to April) or, better yet, low season (May to November). Generally speaking, the cheapest time to travel to the Maldives is between April and June.

The Maldives’ busiest airport is Velana International Airport (VIA). It’s situated on Hulhulé Island in the North Malé Atoll, which is close-ish to the capital island, Malé. The distance from Velana Airport to Malé is approximately 4.7 km (2.9 miles).

There was never going to be a raging backpacker scene in the Maldives, but there are a few decent hostels where independent travelers can stay on a shoestring budget. Hostels in the Maldives are low-key and easygoing, more like beachside guesthouses, but still with hostel amenities.

The cheapest hostels in the Maldives start at around $50 per night.

Though these obviously aren’t the cheapest hostels in the world, they’re still less expensive than staying in a hotel or island villa in the Maldives .

Staying in an Airbnb isn’t all about trying to make your trip to the Maldives as cheap as possible. It’s more about independence; booking yourself into your own place for a week or two means you get the choice of properties with big balconies, swimming pools, and kitchens for whipping up a meal or two.

Hotels in the Maldives

Is the Maldives expensive for hotels? Well, you might have seen the photos of accommodation in this island paradise. Hotels here are, generally speaking, very fancy . There’s even an underwater hotel here. Luxury definitely isn’t lacking here.

However, affordable hotels in the Maldives do exist. Prices still start around $70 per night though.

Staying in hotels may not be the best way to travel cheaply in the Maldives, but this is probably the option for you if you don’t like lifting a finger during your stay. Housekeeping means no chores, on-site restaurants, bars, fitness centers, and pools mean extra convenience. And at hotels, you get all this in varying shades of luxury.

Even budget hotels don’t exactly offer you the chance to travel around the Maldives on a small budget. It’s the Maldives. But they’re still going to be your best option if you don’t want to share a room, or if you don’t want to worry about cleaning and looking after a rental apartment. They have restaurants and offer excursions such as diving trips – the whole shebang.

Unique Accommodation in the Maldives

Taking a vacation in the Maldives doesn’t just mean hotels, apartments, and guesthouses. Why not make the most of your trip to this serene corner of the world by booking yourself a night (or more) on your very own yacht? Yep, I’m serious: a yacht.

Booking to stay on a yacht doesn’t come cheaply though. This type of unique accommodation in the Maldives comes with a high price tag of between $400-500 a night.

But, for the money, you get to sleep literally on the sparkling blue ocean and wake up for a morning’s swim right from your bed. One of the main things about staying on a yacht is being able to easily island-hop – very handy for this island nation.

Yachts can also come with a team of staff, who will make sure everything runs smoothly and you have everything you need for your stay. Basically, it’s a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience that is well worth it.

Here are just a few examples of yachts to rent in the Maldives:

Honors Legacy Yacht – This 40-yard-long luxury yacht has options: rent the whole thing, or stay in a private room among other guests. It features a plush deck area with a hot tub, slick dining, and even a spa. Awesome.

Getting around the Maldives means getting one of three modes of transport: cars, buses, or ferries. Ferries are the main way to get around – it’s a group of islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, after all. Being a well-trod tourist hub, working it all out is simple for visitors, too.

Though the land area isn’t exactly large, the distances between the islands can mean a few longer boat trips than you’d expect. It’s deceptively big: from north to south, the nation spans roughly 820 kilometers (509 miles).

Don’t let the distances daunt you though. For now, let’s take a look in detail at how to get around the Maldives.

Boat Travel in the Maldives

There being no trains between the islands (that would be crazy), boat travel is the main way to get around the Maldives. It’s a fitting, and pretty amazing, way to see the island nation, with boats connecting the dots between the biggest islands and more far-flung atolls.

There are different modes of boat travel for different travel types and budgets in the Maldives. Public ferries ply regularly, scheduled between local islands, while private speedboats bring holidaymakers to blissed-out resort islands.

There are also cargo ships. Colloquially called “fruit ferries”, these ships usually run at night and – surprisingly – can be used by tourists. A good option for backpackers looking to save cash.

Similarly, there’s also dhoni . These traditional wooden boats (fun fact: made of coconut timber) can be chartered for a day. Not cheap, but a luxurious way to get to lesser-visited islands. Prices vary wildly depending on whether you charter it through a local or if you go through your resort.

Public boats are usually reliable; after all, the locals use them to get around as well. The only thing to watch out for is the weather. This can put a bump in the road of any onward travel plans or excursions you’re planning to take on the high seas.

Here are some general costs for different types of boat travel in the Maldives:

Public speedboats: $30 one-way per person
Private speedboats : Average $100 one way (depending on distance)
Public ferry : starts at $2 one-way
Cargo ship/fruit ferry : Depends (Male to Thoddoo is $10)
Dhoni charter : Local boat, $100; resort, $500+

An example trip to show how the Maldives is not expensive (or as expensive as you’d think) for boat travel is the 10-min, $1 ride from Velana Airport to Male.

Bus Travel in the Maldives

Once you’re back on dry land after a boat trip in the Maldives, the next form of public transport you’ll come across is the bus. Buses are a cheaper alternative to getting around in taxis, but can definitely be crowded – particularly when it’s rainy.

The bus network is operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). They only run on certain, designated routes. For example, on Male, there are five bus routes with 41 bus stops in total. They cover everything including the north of the island, the local market, and the Villingili Ferry Terminal .

Due to how small they are, the routes are easy to follow, but they’re more of a local way to get around. That can mean there’s often not enough room for luggage, making them somewhat impractical at peak times.

That said, the buses in the Maldives are great. They’re modern, have English-language signage, and (usually) have air-conditioning.

Now you’re wondering, is the Maldives expensive for bus travel? The answer is no – not at all, in fact. The standard bus fare is $0.20, making it super cheap and an attractive option for anyone ready and willing to save money.

Away from Male, buses run on various other islands in the Maldives. For example, you can travel from Gan International Airport, on Gan Island, to Hithadhoo via a modern bus, costing around $1.

One thing to note is that during Ramadan, buses run a more limited service.

Getting Around Cities in the Maldives

Getting around cities in the Maldives isn’t what I’d call expensive. Especially since it can be mostly done via the power of your own two feet.

Towns tend to be small here, and easily covered by a stroll. That said, there are other ways to get around. Aside from buses (see above), taxis and bicycle rentals provide quick ways to get from A to B.

Taxis are available on the major islands such as Male, Hulhumale, and Fuvamulah. These are easy to spot (they have a “TAXI” sign on the top) and are an efficient way to get around. Prices for a short trip start at $1.30; there’s a $0.65 surcharge for luggage. After 11 p.m., prices increase by $0.65, too.

There are also shared taxis. These are used by locals and pick up multiple passengers at a time. Undoubtedly cheaper than taxis, but whether or not you want to use them is up to you.

People often get around by pedal power in the Maldives. There are bike-share services, but a lot of resorts and guesthouses do provide the use of bike hire – free of charge, or for a nominal fee. This means you can easily explore far-flung beaches and local markets at your own pace.

Renting a Car in the Maldives

Renting a car is probably not the first thing you think about on a trip to the Maldives. That’s because renting a car here is pretty much not possible. Plus, outside of Male and a few other islands, most of this tropical nation is beautifully car-free .

Male is often clogged with traffic and is walkable anyway, so renting a car would be unnecessary. And if you do need to get around, there are taxis or buses. It’s also eminently cyclable.

But still, you can try to rent a car if you like.

If you want to explore further afield, there’s also the option to try out a ride in a seaplane. You obviously won’t be piloting these. They’re run by Trans-Maldivian Airways and open up pretty much every single island in the country to tourists and locals alike.

Seaplane costs depend on distance, whether it’s a same-day return trip, etc. Prices start from $250 to $450. (Private seaplane hires run into the thousands!)

ESTIMATED EXPENSE: $10-$30 USD per day

Maldivian cuisine is a world of tastiness. It’s the result of Arabic, Indian, and Sri Lankan – even East Asian – influences over the centuries. However, many tourists on their trip to the island nation don’t usually get to sample the local delights, sticking to resort restaurants.

There is plenty of international cuisine on offer at hotels and resorts. That’s fine if you want to eat that, but local eating is the best way to stick to a budget for independent travelers. The cuisine is based around seafood, mainly tuna, with lashings of coconut, chili, and garlic for flavor.

Don’t miss out on these specialties:

Mas huni – Fish for breakfast? Normal in the Maldives. Mas huni combines smoked tuna, grated coconut, onions, and chili (and more) in a bowl; served with a roshi (savory flatbread). Costs around $3.
Garudhiya – Gaurdhiya is fish soup packed with deep savory flavors and citrus zing. This traditional local dish is often served with rice on the side. Can be found for as low as $1.
Masroshi – Masroshi is the stuff of dreams. It’s a roshi stuffed with smoked tuna that’s been whizzed up with chili, ginger, curry leaves, lime, and grated coconut. It’s then deep-fried and often enjoyed with a cup of tea. Price begins at around $1.

As you can see, the Maldives is not expensive for (local) food. Here are some extra tips to keep your budget …

Go for Hedhikaa (snacks) – Hedhikaa (literally “snacks”) are the way to go in the Maldives for cheap eats. You can find a whole world of tastiness under this umbrella term, including keemia (deep-fried fish rolls), gulha (balls of pastry stuffed with smoked fish), and theluli mas (fried fish flavored with garlic and chili).
Keep away from resorts – Unless you’re getting your food all-inclusive, don’t be tempted by resort restaurants or eateries near big hotels. They’re going to be expensive. Avoid it unless you want to explode your budget.
Take a picnic to a remote beach – Nothing beats unfurling a little picnic blanket and decking it out with treats you’ve sourced from markets and local supermarkets (more below). It’s a cheap way to lunch.

Where to Eat Cheaply in the Maldives

So, it turns out the Maldives isn’t too expensive for food – well, as long as you stay away from the fancy, high-end restaurants. But it’s never a bad thing to have more money-saving tips for tucking into tasty treats here.

So here are a few more ways to eat well on a budget…

Head to Raaveribe Maizaan – For morning meal goodness, head to Male’s west harbour area aka Raaveribe Maizaan. There’s a line of decent local restaurants here that are well known for their Maldivian breakfasts. Service isn’t great, but the food is.
Stay at a local guesthouse – Until 2008, all tourists were required to stay in resorts. Not anymore: and we should all be glad. This allows affordable, family-run guesthouses to run wherever they want. Naturally, their food is also affordable. Stay and soak up the flavours.
Get takeaway from cafes – Cafes are inexpensive places to eat, unless they’re obviously bougie. Order your snacks (think samosas) and get them to takeaway. That way you can keep yourself sated all day long.

There are ways to keep things even cheaper, though, and that is by cooking for yourself. In that case, you’ll want to know about Maldividian supermarkets…

Multi Store & Multi Supermarket Maldives – This store can be found on Hithadhoo Island. It features good quality products and is popular with locals.
STO People’s Choice Supermart – Located in Male, this clean supermarket is a little more expensive than others but it’s well stocked and has a good range of products. Good to get supplies before going somewhere more remote.

ESTIMATED EXPENSE: $0-$30 USD per day

The Maldives is an Islamic country, and with that comes strict alcohol laws for locals and visitors alike. Unless you’re staying on a resort island, the chances of getting a drink are very slim. You can’t even take alcohol away from a resort anywhere else.

If you’re set on drinking alcohol during your trip to the Maldives, there are ways around these stringent regulations. Some islands – Maafushi, for example – have liveaboard diving boats anchored next to the island on a semi-permanent basis, and here is where you can get a drink.

Be warned, however: it’s not cheap. Due to the high demand and risks involved, alcohol in the Maldives is expensive.

International beers at resorts are also not cheap. For a 330ml bottle of beer, expect to pay from $5 to $15.

There are a few cocktails you may want to try if beer’s not your thing…

Biyadhoo Special – Named after the island of the same name, this cocktail is a refreshing way to enjoy a drink. It’s one part vodka, one part pineapple juice, two parts melon liqueur – all topped off with a slice of pineapple. Price? Not cheap, around $13.
Maldivian Lady – Another cocktail. This is a blend of white rum, pineapple juice, apricot brandy, and orange juice. Pineapple and a cherry to garnish. It’s also around the $13 mark.

Some Maldivians do make some sort of alcohol. It’s called raa . This is a toddy made from palm tree flowers. Usually, it’s drunk fresh (and sweet), but if left for a while it ferments and becomes slightly alcoholic. If you’re staying somewhere, there’s a chance you may stumble across this.

The Maldives is a stunning destination and one of the best tropical islands to visit . Because of this, simply being here is the attraction. It’s all about lazing around on the beach, relaxing, and enjoying a few excursions here and there. Cultural attractions – museums and the like – don’t tend to top the list.

Luckily, because there are so many beaches and places to see marine wildlife, you won’t ever have to go far to experience the beauty of the Maldives. Whether it’s dolphin safaris or scuba diving tours, there’s plenty on offer.

However, given the size of the country as a whole, there are a lot of natural attractions to choose from. It all depends on what islands you’re visiting and when.

On a budget, I’d recommend sticking to places popular with backpackers and independent travelers. Maafushi is one example; others include Thulusdhoo, Huraa, and Dhigurah. This basically means there’s more competition between restaurants, guesthouses, and tour companies.

Tipping in the Maldives

If you want to tip in the Maldives, then it’s a good idea to go prepared with a few extra small notes to show your appreciation for good service. It’s not by any means compulsory, however, and tipping isn’t always necessary.

Often, however, it is very much appreciated. We’d say the culture is discretionary in the Maldives.

At resorts, you’ll often be able to spot a tipping box that’s left at reception. If you’re staying somewhere like this, it’s ok to leave a few notes. Interestingly, the currency most used for this sort of tipping is USD.

Other people that can be tipped in the Maldives include bellboys, dive boat crews, and taxi drivers (especially if they’ve helped you with your bags).

A good guide for tipping in any of the above cases is $2-5.

At most restaurants in the Maldives, a 10% service charge is applied to all bills. This means you don’t really need to worry about tipping, but you can still leave $1-2 to thank service staff if you like.

9. Don’t Shop for Souvenirs on Male

Avoiding souvenir shopping in Male might sound overly cautious. Still, this island is one of the Maldives’ most touristy, and it has the highest souvenir prices. Top 5 Things to See and Do in the Maldives

1. Explore Malé

The Maldivian capital, while small, has plenty of things to see and do. Seet the country’s 17th century mosque (Hukuru Miskiiy) and get a historical overview of the country at the National Museum. Be sure to grab a coffee and watch the world go by in one of the charmingly chaotic cafes too.

2. Go diving

The Maldives is one of the best diving destinations in the world. See hammerheads in Rasdhoo Madivaru (aka Hammerhead Point) or free dive with whale sharks. There are also lots of mantas and sea turtles here too. Single-tank dives start at 775 MVR.

3. Relax on the beach

Outside the private resorts, Omadoo (on the South Ari Atoll) and Ukulhas Island (on the Alif Alif Atoll) are two of the best beaches in the country. Manadhoo is another great place too. Just make sure you’re on a designated ‘Bikini Beach’ (a beach specifically for westerners).

4. Enjoy the food

The seafood here is beyond delicious and incredibly fresh. Most of the restaurants in Malé offer outdoor dining areas. Some of the more popular places to go include The Seagull Café, Symphony, Royal Garden Café, and Irudhashu Hotaa (for quick meals).

5. Do some watersports

Banana boats (inflatable boats pulled behind a speedboat), parasailing, water skiing, jet skiing, snorkeling, and kayaking can all be found here. Prices range from 380 MVR for snorkeling to 2,000 MVR per person for tandem parasailing.

Other Things to See and Do in the Maldives

Even when you’re on a modest budget, it’s wonderful to indulge in an extra dose of R&R. Expect to pay at least 1,000 MVR for a 30-minute massage. Some of the larger hotels offer discounts for early-morning/late evening bookings so inquire with your hotel, Airbnb host, or guesthouse to find out about deals.

2. Go fishing

Seafood is an integral part of Maldivian cuisine. Most hotels and guesthouses rent poles, bait, and provide a guide for around 775 MVR. Skipjack and yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, bigeye scad, and mackerel scad are all commonly found here. If you’re an experienced angler, some of the best game fishing in the world can be done here. Expect to pay at least 3,000 MVR for a half-day shared charter.

3. Snorkel in the Baa Atoll

The Baa Atoll is a 1,200-square-kilometer (463-square-mile) UNESCO Biosphere Reserve brimming with manta rays and whale sharks. On a clear day, you can see them swarming below the surface. It’s only a five-minute boat ride from Dharavandhoo Island but visiting the area is strictly regulated and there is an 80 person capacity so as not to disrupt the precious ecosystem. Admission is around 550 MVR, which gives you 45 minutes in the water and a certified snorkel guide. Profits go towards the Baa Atoll Conservation Fund.

4. Tour the National Art Gallery

Established in 1999, there’s no permanent gallery here so be sure to check the website in advance as the space is left empty if there is no visiting exhibition on display. The temporary exhibitions at the gallery, which range from traditional paintings and local textiles to international modern artists, are well worth a visit.

5. Dive the Maldive Victory

In 1981, this 100-meter-long (328-foot) cargo ship hit a reef and sank. It’s now an incredible dive site for experienced divers. Resting between 15-31 meters (50-100 feet) below the surface, there are strong currents here that keep the tropical fish flowing through the shipwreck — but they also make it a challenging dive site. There are all kinds of coral, fish, and sponges here. It’s accessible all year around.

6. Visit the Malé Fish Market

Come here and catch a glimpse of Maldivians living out their daily routine in the commercial center of Malé. Select a fish (if you can muster your way through a purchase as most fishermen don’t speak English) and have it cooked at your guesthouse for dinner.

7. Wash up on a sandbank

These tiny mounds of sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean are the closest you can get to feeling like you’re on your own private island. Private trips can be arranged to any one of the hundred different banks dotted around the islands (many of which are attached to/affiliated with resorts). Tours usually last 2-3 hours and cost 900 MVR.

8. Skip Maafushi

Maafushi, once a sleepy little island, is now the victim of uncontrolled development. There are hotels going up left and right, boats making frequent trips to Malé to pick up tour groups, and an increasingly-crowded and overbuilt beach. The few restaurants on the island cater mostly to tourists and outside the area cleaned up for visitors, it’s one trash-covered dump. Skip it!

9. Do all the watersports

Diving and snorkeling to see the life under the water is what the Maldives are famous for but there’s plenty more to do. Most resorts have kayaks, paddleboards, and paddle boats that you can borrow for free. Others offer surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing packages for both beginners and experienced surfers (May-October is the best time for this). Then you’ve got things like banana boating, tubing, jet skiing, sailing, parasailing, and flyboarding which are all also often available.

10. Stay on a local island

Most people stay in the high-end resorts when they go to the Maldives but there’s so much more to the islands than this. Local islands give you the chance to get to know the Maldives as a country rather than just seeing a resort and a ton of biodiverse marine life. The local islands are where you can find guesthouse accommodation which is cheaper, and there is more variety in terms of tour operators, restaurants, and other things to do. Fulidhoo, Ukulhas, Rasdhoo, and Thinadhoo and some of the most popular choices. Generally speaking, the further away from the capital you get the more laid-back and quiet the islands are.

Maldives Travel Costs

Accommodation – Private rooms at guesthouses are going to be your cheapest option in the Maldives, with prices starting around 625 MVR per night.

Resorts start at 6,000 MVR per night (not including the private speed boats or seaplane transfers you need to arrive there). They can cost upwards of 30,000 MVR a night, making this an ideal place to use any hotel points you have saved up.

Airbnb is available around the islands with private rooms starting at 700 MVR, though 1,200 MVR is more common. For an entire home/apartment, prices start at 1,500 MVR but can go as high as 6,000 MVR or more! Entire homes/apartments are far less common so be sure to book in advance if you prefer one.

Wild camping isn’t possible as all land around the islands is owned. Your only real camping option is to ask to pitch a tent in someone’s back yard, however, this isn’t a reliable solution so skip camping here.

Food – Traditional cuisine in the Maldives is based on fish, coconuts, and rice. Tubers like taro and sweet potatoes are also common staples. Aside from all kinds of fish and seafood soups and stews, be sure to try favorites such as gulha (fried fish filled dough balls), kuli (spicy fish cakes), and dessert treats like bondi bai (Maldivian rice pudding).

Most traditional meals cost less than 70 MVR at casual local restaurants though most resorts and hotels include meals since restaurants here are rare.

For a three-course meal of traditional food at a budget-friendly hotel, expect to pay around 300 MVR with a drink.

Alcohol is generally prohibited but can be found at the more luxurious resorts. Expect to pay a premium for it: beer costs upwards of 125 MVR while cocktails are double that. A latte or cappuccino costs 35 MVR while a bottle of water is 5 MVR.

If you’re looking to cook your own food, make sure you stock up at the STO trade center in Malé. Shopping here can save you a little extra money, especially if you are staying somewhere with a kitchen. Prices here are often more competitive than street vendors and there is a great assortment of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other daily essentials.

For a week’s worth of staples like rice, produce, and seafood, expect to pay around 700 MVR.

Backpacking the Maldives Suggested Budgets

If you are backpacking the Maldives, my suggested budget is 1,100 MVR per day. This assumes you’re staying in a budget guesthouse, cooking all of your meals, not drinking alcohol, taking public ferries to get around (but mostly sticking to one island), and doing free and cheap activities like snorkeling and relaxing at the beach.

On a mid-range budget of 4,300 MVR, you can stay in a budget hotel or private Airbnb, eat out for most of your meals, take some guided tours, go diving, do some water sports, visit a couple of islands, and take the occasional private water taxi to get around.

On a “luxury” budget of 9,500 MVR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, drink alcohol, eat out for all your meals, island-hop, and do more activities and guided excursions such as fishing charters and parasailing. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in MVR.

Maldives Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

The Maldives is a challenging place to save money so non-resort travel is fairly new to the country. There are only a few things you can do to lower your budget here:

Bring plenty of cash – Though the Maldives has its own currency (MVR), US dollars are widely accepted — and you often get a better price if you pay in USD. This varies from one restaurant or shop to another, so carry both and pay with whatever gives you the best rate. There are only ATMs in Malé.
Bring a reusable water bottle – The tap water here is not safe to drink so make sure you have a reusable bottle with you. To stay safe, bring a water filter like LifeStraw to ensure your water is clean and free from bacteria. It saves you money and saves the environment too!
Island hop by ferry – The Maldives’ islands are served by a series of ferries from Malé. They run on opposite days (to Maafushi on Monday, back to Malé on Tuesday) and rarely on Friday (the Muslim sabbath). You can jump from Malé to an atoll’s capital island then to smaller, nearby islands in the chain. Ferries cost between 55-150 MVR depending on the distance. Plan ahead and research the ferries beforehand so you can avoid paying for a private speedboat.
Consider all-inclusive packages – The taxes and import fees on food and drink means that you really don’t have many restaurants to choose from. Some hotels offer great rates which include food, drinks, and even premium amenities such as watersports, free yoga classes, or spa treatments.
Use a travel agent for resort stays – This might seem counterintuitive for a budget traveler but agents who specialize in Maldives travel often have access to better deals than you can find on the internet. Their prices generally include speedboat or seaplane transfer costs and you may even find that you get upgrades on arrival.
Book in advance – While most budget travelers figure out their plans on arrival, booking in advance has several benefits. For starters, Airbnbs, guesthouses, and hotels can get booked up in peak seasons so your options may be limited. If you have booked in advance, your hotel or friendly villa/guesthouse owner can help facilitate transfers and arrange activities.

Hostels are virtually non-existent in the Maldives so people on a budget mostly stay in guesthouses and small hotels. Here are a few suggestions to help you get started and save money:

How to Get Around the Maldives

Boat – The unreliable but reasonably-priced public ferry is a no-brainer for independent travelers, with ferries starting at 55 MVR depending on the route. If you’re looking to visit an island farther away from Malé, you need to do some island hopping via the ferry system. This might require you to stay overnight on an island along the way as the ferries do not run daily or regularly. Most ferries also do not run on the weekends.

Many of the islands further afield can only be accessed by private boat or plane. Check the ferry schedule well in advance and plan accordingly (I didn’t and it threw off my whole itinerary).

Private speedboats cost around 385-1,500 MVR per person depending on the distance from Malé.

When to Go to the Maldives

The Maldives is a year-round destination with temperatures hovering between 23-31°C (74-89°F). The high season runs from December to April, when airfare and hotel prices increase dramatically (especially around Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, and Easter). Book in advance if you want to visit during this period.

Don’t be too nervous about booking during the monsoon period, which runs from May to October. You can enjoy fewer crowds, better rates, and plenty of sunny days in between the few-and-far rainy spells.

Diving is spectacular throughout the year. For other watersports, such as surfing, the best breaks are from mid-February to November.

How to Stay Safe in the Maldives

The Maldives is an incredibly safe destination for tourists. Keep an eye on your belongings in public areas in Malé, which is more prone to petty crime (although at a very low level). On the other islands, especially the resort-focused islands, it’s highly, highly unlikely anything is going to happen to you or your stuff. That said, it’s always a good idea to avoid leaving any valuables on the beach while you swim.

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though the standard precautions apply (always keep an eye on your drink when out, never walk home alone at night, etc.)

With the exception of the 2004 tsunami, large-scale natural disasters are rare. However, climate change has led to an uptick in increased rainfall, storm surges, and minor coastal floods. Make sure you have travel insurance when you visit.

Respect the Muslim customs by adhering to dress codes, especially in the capital, where resort wear isn’t common. Do not drink alcohol outside your resort as fines are possible.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

Naturally, water villas are the most expensive options but you can book a beach pool villa, not a water villa, for around $1000 per night.

As you can see, you can scale up the luxury as much as you can when you visit the Maldives as it has a tourism industry that is dedicated to giving visitors these kinds of amazing experiences where money is no object.

You can also opt for a full board package which may cost you more upfront but the all-inclusive price can bring costs down when compared to paying for meals, activities, and water sports on top of the room prices.

For example, if you are staying on a private island resort and have not opted for the all-inclusive package then your meal prices are going to be extremely expensive. Most island resorts will have a few restaurants for you to choose from laidback ones to fine dining options.

Basic meals in the laid-back restaurants will cost you around $20 and that is for simple food such as a burger. The cost of food goes up dramatically from there if you go to the high-end restaurants where the minimum amount you can spend on a meal will be around $100 per person. This, of course, is not the limit and you can easily push up to $300 a head when ordering the best food on the menu.

When staying on an inhabited island such as Male or Hulhumale island you can actually find food at reasonable prices similar to what you might expect at home, sometimes even cheaper too.

Male is home to a wide variety of restaurants and you can sample anything from traditional Maldivian food to international food options too. Generally speaking, a decent meal in sit-down restaurants will cost you around $10 per head which is incredibly affordable and the street food prices are even cheaper too!

If you are traveling on a budget, then staying on the inhabited islands is going to save you a ton of money when it comes to eating out! You also have the option to buy snacks, fruit, and supplies for the shops and markets to make it even more affordable too!

Is Transportation in the Maldives Expensive?

When it comes to costs and transportation, it is the same story as everything else in the Maldives. If you do it like a local, then local transportation is very affordable but if you are going to an island resort for some luxury, then transport prices and transfers go up rapidly.

Something everyone visiting the Maldives has to pay for is airport transfers and this can either be across the bridge to your hotel in Male or it can be a transfer to a private island, or even from one island to the next when doing some island hopping around the other islands near the main island of Male.

The main form of transport for the locals who live in the Maldives is via a public ferry service which only goes to the inhabited local islands, not to the resort islands. The ferry journeys cost more or less depending on their journey time but you should never be paying more than $5 one way at the most.

For example, traveling from Male to Maafushi is around $3 one way, Maafushi to Fulidhoo is about $4, and Maafushi to Guraidhoo is just $2. This makes traveling on a budget around the Maldives going from one island and guesthouse to the next very affordable and doable so long as you enjoy long ferry crossings over the pristine Indian Ocean, and who wouldn’t?

If you are staying at an island resort or want to visit an uninhabited island for the day and have your “own island” for a few hours then you are going to have to book a private speedboat or seaplane to get you where you want to go.

A return trip to an island on a speedboat can cost anywhere from $200 to $500 depending on the journey time. If it takes 45 minutes on the speedboat expect to pay around $250 for the privilege.

If a speed boat seems expensive, then a seaplane is another category altogether. A return flight on a seaplane to one of the other atolls will run you around $500 and that is only if the flight time is 20 minutes, the costs go up from there.

As you can see, while the exclusivity of island resorts is a lovely way to experience the Maldives, the costs associated with them are no joke!

Are the Attractions in the Maldives Expensive?

The most popular activities in the Maldives of course are all based around the sea. The coral reefs around the Maldives are some of the most beautiful in the world which makes it one of the top spots to go diving, snorkeling, surfing, and fishing.

It is also home to gorgeous beaches and some of the best beaches are found on the uninhabited islands, so you are going to need some transportation to get to each one.

The costs of seeing all these wonderful attractions are again dependent on whether you are staying on a resort island or a local island.

The prices on a local island are much more affordable for activities and you should expect to pay around $50 per person for a snorkeling trip, around $100-150 per person for two dives, and $50 for a fishing trip on a local boat.

You can also do some cool excursions such as going to sandbars which come out at low tide for around $25 per person, you will be on the most pristine beach you have ever seen doing so. Hopping around the islands of the atoll is also a fun day out and runs at $50 per person.

The most affordable way to book these kinds of excursions is through your guest house or even another guest house. Ask at a few and see what prices you get. If you are staying on Male, then doing a food tour or going to the museums are also very affordable.

If you are staying at a resort and aren’t on an all-inclusive booking, a sandbank trip is around $160, snorkeling is $150, fishing is $150, and a dolphin cruise is $175. Compared to a guesthouse price, these are pretty extortionate.

Are Alcoholic Beverages in the Maldives Expensive?

The Maldives is a Muslim country and one of the most strict ones out there operating under sharia law, meaning all citizens have to be Muslim. This means that alcohol is strictly forbidden and if you are staying on one of the local islands, you are not going to find a beer being sold anywhere.

The only place in the Maldives where you can buy alcohol is on live-aboard trips or on island resorts. All alcohol in the Maldives is taxed at a whopping 22% so even when you buy a drink at a resort, remember that 22% is added at the end.

Drinking in the resorts is expensive and you are likely to pay around $10 for a beer and up to $20 or more for a cocktail, and don’t forget they are going to add the 22% tax and service charge to it at the end as well.

Other Travel Costs in the Maldives

You may have thought that we had covered everything here but there often are some extra and semi-hidden costs when traveling to the Maldives, which is something you need to check before booking.

These extra hidden costs tend to be based around taxes and service charges as these are not usually included in the price given to you by resorts.

Firstly there is a 10% hotel service tax that will be added to your bill in some cases and this goes hand in hand with a 12% goods and services tax too, so that is an extra 22% already. After this, a $3 Green Tax per person per night is then added and finally, don’t forget about credit card fees.

Resorts can charge up to 5% for a credit card fee. When you add all of these hidden extra costs together, your trip to the Maldives can have an extra 27% added to the bill at the end, which if you are staying at a luxury hotel can be a real kick in the teeth.

Be very wary when you are booking to check if all the taxes and extra charges are included in your price as this will ensure you know how much you are paying before you get there and won’t get handed an extra 27% bill at the end.

Another cost which we haven’t included here is general travel insurance and it is something very useful to have. While prices vary from one insurer to the next, travel insurance for two weeks in the Maldives would run between $70 and $100 depending on the level of cover you require.

If you are traveling on a budget then chances are you are not going to stay at a resort, but if you are, go for an all-inclusive package as it will save you money in the long run.

The extra costs of lunch, dinner, and activities which make the Maldives one of the coolest places in the world will quickly rack up. Plus, the last thing you want to do on your vacation is spending the whole time holding back from the things you want to do.

Stay On Local Inhabited Islands

Over the past 50 years, it’s become known as a honeymoon hot spot, a family-friendly getaway and one of the world’s most coveted vacation destinations.

And while it may seem like a lot of hype for one small, spread-out island nation in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives really does live up to it. From coconut-fringed islands and colorful reefs to warm smiles and even warmer curries, it’s often a once-in-a-lifetime getaway for travelers. Whether you’re heading off to a ritzy private island resort or a more affordable local island, there’s a handful of things to know before departure. Here are our top tips and best advice ahead of a trip to the Maldives.

1. Plan for at least 5 nights in the Maldives

For all travelers, it takes a plane ride or three to land in this far-flung slice of paradise. So, while a weekend to the Maldives may work for travelers based in Asia, five nights will suffice if you’re crunched for time and budget. And if neither is an issue, plan for at least a week to fully unwind and embrace island life.

2. You can get around via seaplane or speedboat

When choosing your island resort, pay attention to whether it’s reachable by seaplane or speedboat. Although seaplane transfers give picture-worthy views of the pearl-shaped atolls, they often cost much more. And be aware there’s a 25kg (55lbs) total luggage per person allowance on seaplanes. So, if you’re looking to save money, pick a resort closer to Male that you can transfer to via speedboat. You can also take a domestic flight to another atoll in the Maldives and a speedboat to the resort.

3. Island-hopping is doable (and encouraged)

Many travelers spend weeks poring over which private island resort is the best for them, but you don’t have to choose one. Beach bums can split their time between resorts. You’ll need to travel back to Male airport, where a representative from your next resort will meet you and transfer you there via seaplane or speedboat. If the resorts are close together, you can charter a speedboat from one resort to another.

If you’re staying at a resort accessible by seaplane transfer, arriving in the morning is crucial. Once the sun sets, seaplanes stop flying, so you’d need to stay overnight in Male or Hulhumale to wait for the next seaplane. If your resort is accessible via a speedboat or water taxi, arriving at night is less of an issue, but the Maldives scenery is so stunning you’ll want to be able to see it.

5. Understand “island time”

These tiny private islands operate by their own rules, including their own time zones. Some resorts will ask guests to set their clocks to “island time,” an hour forward to give them an extra hour of sunlight for snorkeling or swimming .

There are no grocery stores or Walmarts on these tiny private islands. So, triple-check that you’ve got everything you need, including reef-safe sunscreen to help protect one of the Maldives’ most precious natural habitats. Every resort has a boutique store where you can pick up necessities you may have forgotten, but prices are often insanely expensive.

7. Familiarize yourself with the prohibited items list

The Maldives is a devout Muslim country with strict rules. So travelers entering cannot bring alcohol, pornographic materials, pork products or idols of worship among other things . If anything prohibited is found, it will be taken away on arrival.

8. Local islands are a bargain but come with caveats

The local islands are a great and safe option for travelers on a budget and those not willing to shell out thousands for an island getaway. Small Maldivian-run guesthouses offer a much more intimate look at daily life, but there are a few things to know first. Alcohol is illegal on local islands, so don’t expect to enjoy a beer by the beach. Travelers must also dress conservatively on local islands by covering their shoulders and knees. Women don’t need to cover their heads, but wearing a bathing suit outside of designated “bikini beaches” is not allowed and could land you with a fine.

9. There’s no standard tipping etiquette

Tipping on top of your restaurant bill at the resort is not expected because a 10% tip is already included. However, if you want to leave something for your favorite server at the end of your stay that is more than OK. Guests can also write a review calling out their favorite team members; management often rewards staff for stellar service. Leaving a tip ranging from US$2 to US$10 per day for housekeeping is also customary. And if you have a butler, tipping 10% of the cost of your stay is a good rule.

10. You can pay in USD

The local currency is the Maldivian rufiya, but US dollars are also accepted. You can get some local currency from the ATM at the airport on arrival. If you want to exchange money for rufiya, you can do so in the airport at the Bank of Maldives Foreign Exchange. Keep your receipt with you so you can change anything extra back into your local currency when you leave.

11. Resort doctors can help with health concerns

The vast majority of travelers will go straight from the plane to a private island resort. Should you have any health issues during your stay, the on-island doctor will be able to assist you.

12. There is a “green tax” for tourists

Every tourist is charged a government tax to stay in a hotel, liveaboard or guesthouse. The tax is US$6 per day unless you’re staying in a guesthouse on a local island with 50 or fewer registered rooms, then the tax is US$3 per day. The charge will be included in your overall bill.

13. Sustainability initiatives are everywhere

As the world’s lowest-lying country, the Maldives is under serious threat from climate change. Nearly every resort has sustainability initiatives, which might include coral regeneration, onsite gardens, turtle rehabilitation and/or unique mosquito trapping methods instead of chemical spraying. As mentioned above, the majority of luxury hotels and properties in the Maldives have their own island which means guests will need to arrive by seaplane or speedboat. Unsurprisingly, neither of these are cheap options.

Pricing depends on which resort island you are going to, and how far it is from Male. For speed boats, you can expect to pay about $100 return. Seaplanes can cost as much as $500 return. If you were thinking about going to a nice restaurant on a different island for a special occasion, you need to budget for the cost of your transportation which will likely cost more than your meal.

Given these costs, I recommend you stick to one or two islands for your trip and do some research ahead of time about how expensive it is to get to the islands you choose.

There are a few local ferries, but they have limited use as they won’t get you to any of the private resorts.

For this article, I’ve estimated $350 with the idea of visiting two islands and using the cheaper transfer options. That said, you could spend much much more.

The Maldives is an ocean lover’s paradise. This country has some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling excursions in the Indian Ocean/world. You can expect to pay around $80 for a snorkelling tour and around $160 for scuba diving . Other popular activities include surfing, spa treatments, lagoon/atolls tours, boating and fishing.

If you’re staying in Malé, consider a walking tour or food tour so you can get a sense of the local culture. You could also take an island hopping tou r to give you a look at different parts of the country

What you spend here really depends on how much you want to do and what you plan on doing, but allocating $300 for attractions will give you a couple of days of activities.

If you are staying in the resorts in the Maldives, you’ll likely have the option to do an all-inclusive package, often referred to as a full board package, or pay for meals separately. It is definitely in your best interest to go with the all-inclusive packages. Since the resorts are the only buildings on the islands, you will have to eat in their restaurants anyway and you will be charged a premium for all fees. To be clear, everything you order will be expensive. That includes beer, curries, coconut water, pizza, tuna, etc.

Alcohol is generally not included in the all-inclusive packages, so you’ll need to add more to your budget to pay for drinks. These drinks range from about 10-20 dollars each.

Some properties also have half board packages available where some of your meals are included.

Assuming you go with the all-inclusive plan, allow about $200 for extra food and drink charges and remember that 22% tax!

The Maldives isn’t exactly a shopping destination but it’s always good to budget a little extra in case. Maybe you’ll find some souvenirs, or maybe there’s an extra tour you’d like to take. Or maybe you’d just like to spend a little more on cocktails by the beach. I’d add an extra $200 to your budget just in case.

So, how much does it cost to do to the Maldives? Based on my suggested 8-day, 7-night itinerary which leans more towards luxury, you can expect to spend about $5,950. As I said, this is taking a more luxury approach to your vacation planning, but there are ways. However, if you’ve always dreamed of a luxury tropical vacation to the islands, then the Maldives is definitely worth the splurge. Traditionally, November is a cheaper month to visit the Maldives as it’s right before the December / winter rush. That said, the Maldives has a lot more action going on during the summer months of June, July and August since that’s when the country has the most tourists. April is another good time to visit as that’s when tourism tends to naturally go down.

Since the Maldives is a dream destination, many people will plan years in advance. That said, when it comes to actually booking your trip, most people will book about 8-12 months before their departure date. Checking out flights early can be advantageous as you might be able to find a sale. Booking your accommodations early will help guarantee you a room at the resort you’re looking at.

While cheap travel packages to the Maldives do exist, they’re usually only offered through specific travel providers such as Expedia. It may be tempting to book one of these deals, but be sure to read the fine print and check to see if the dates work for you.

Most people head to the Maldives for the beaches and overwater bungalows, but there are also a few attractions that are worth checking out. The Male fish market, Male local market, Grand Friday Mosque, and water sports are just some of the things you can enjoy while visiting the Maldives.

In fact, it’s one of the most expensive destinations in the world for most people (especially coming from the US, which is about as far as you can get!), but it’s important to remember that it is expensive for good reason. The Maldives is paradise on earth!

Six Senses Laamu- Rates around $1000-1500 per night

Barefoot, eco-luxury, Six Senses Laamu is a great option for luxury in the Maldives. You’ll have countless activities to choose from at this stunning and wild paradise on earth. The food is amazing, and there are half board and full board options to choose from. Beautifully designed, air-conditioned teak villas feature an outdoor bathroom with a glass bathtub (!!!). Six Senses Laamu is the only resort in the Laamu Atoll, in the south of Maldives. It is located on Olhuveli Island which is a 35 minute inter-island domestic flight away from Male International Airport to Kadhdhoo, followed by a short speedboat ride.

You can expect to spend about 250 per person per day in the Maldives, whether you are on a full-board meal plan or if you are paying a la carte. Most resorts in the Maldives offer a half-board or full-board meal option. At a resort like Six Senses , full board includes breakfast, lunch and dinner and costs $222 per adult and $111 per child, and the half board meal plan includes just breakfast and dinner, and is $148 per adult, $74 per child.

How much does alcohol cost in the Maldives?

On top of these food costs, you’ll want to budget some for alcohol (not included), which can be very expensive in the Maldives. Cocktails are around $25 each, and wine is marked up at least 4-5X. Since you’re on a private island, there is no option to go to a nearby town or store, nor are you able to bring any alcohol into the country of the Maldives, it’s illegal (unlike, say, in Bora Bora , where I packed 6 bottles of wine – a great tip / way to save some money on a trip to Bora Bora )

Should you do a full-board or all-inclusive meal plan in the Maldives?

Some resorts (like Kandolhu ) include alcohol in their cost, which is a great option for an all-inclusive in the Maldives ! If your resort’s full-board option doesn’t include alcohol, I would say it depends how much you plan on eating, and how much more relaxed you’ll be if you’ve already pre-paid and can order everything you’d like! There are good ways to save money on a trip to the Maldives if you are paying for meals a la carte (ordering room service one night, for example, or doing some meals more casual than others), and you wouldn’t have that ability if you pay the full-board. So it is totally up to you. I also have found half-board is more than enough for me and my husband, since I usually go big at the breakfast buffet and then skip lunch on vacation.

When planning a trip to the Maldives, keep in mind that transportation costs are added onto your room rate. The cost of transportation in the Maldives can get super pricey if your resort has a seaplane or domestic transfer to get to it. They will charge you for this on top of the cost of your room, and it’s as much as $800 per person just to get to your resort!

At the St. Regis , however, the sand bank picnic will set you back $1600 per couple. I think it’s good to budget at least $800 for activities so you can feel like you can do some fun things on your trip, like a couple’s massage with these views!!

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The Maldives is famous for being “80/80/80” all year, meaning it’s generally 80 degrees, 80% humidity, and 80 degree ocean water the whole year. Dry season is November-May, but this is also peak season for tourists, meaning not only are the resorts usually at their max capacity, but the prices are twice as high than the rest of the year. So if you’re looking to travel to Maldives on a budget, low season might be your best bet.

And, since The Maldives are so popular during the high season, make sure you are booking well in advance if you’re traveling then. I think a lot of people are scared away from the Maldives’ “wet” season, but I traveled to the Maldives in September, and, after experiencing 10 straight days of sunshine, and 2 partly cloudy days with the occasional rain squall blowing through, and talking to lots of people working at the resorts about the different seasons, it seems to me like no matter what time of year you visit the Maldives, you can get incredible weather, or a ton of rain, it’s tropical! And you can’t predict it.

How do you get around the Maldives?

If you’re wondering about the price of plane tickets from the USA to the Maldives, it depends on the time of year but I’ve found them to be around $1500 per person or so.

It depends where you’re coming from, as it’s much easier to get to the Maldives from Europe, Asia and the UAE than it is from the United States. But, even if you’re coming from far away, if you have credit card points or can swing it, The Maldives is definitely worth the long flight! Just be aware of the jet lag both going there and coming home, and budget for a few extra days of your trip (you don’t want to get all the way there, spend the first few days jet-lagged, then have to turn right back around)

Once you land in Malé International Airport (MLE), you will hop on board a ferry, seaplane or speedboat to get to your accommodation, which is likely on its own private island.
