MANILA, Philippines – The talk of the UP town is finally here! Have you been to the new Gyud Food Market yet? The newly-opened University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Food Hub and its lineup of local concessionaires are now serving hungry students, families, barkadas, and communities looking for comfort grub any time of day.

up food trip

The spacious food court located along E. Jacinto Street near the College of Fine Arts opened in mid-January, operating daily from 7 am to 10 pm (not all stalls are open that early, though).

up food trip

The open-air structure has two levels, and is located beside a breezy garden that showcases pretty lights at night and has several picnic tables for comfortable al fresco group dining.

up food trip

A ‘gyud’ initiative

Gyud Food Hub – which is a project helmed by Jose Magsaysay Jr. of Potato Corner, digital creator of Our Awesome Planet Anton Diaz, and other partners – simply means “Good Yummy Destination.” The neighborhood food market didn’t want to be a “mall” – that is why there are hardly any mall-based franchises here. Instead, the food businesses are hand-picked by Anton, with each one needing to have its own “story.” Most are mom-and-pop, lesser known names that serve high-quality food.

up food trip

The goal of Gyud Food Hub is for it to be an almost 24/7 food experience – that customers will be able to hit their “3-4 times a day meals” here. Have breakfast, lunch, merienda, and/or dinner at this location, plus dessert!

up food trip

The second floor is still empty, but it is set to be a non-food, student-centric services area, offering photocopying services, bookstores, and more. A coffee shop is also in the pipeline.

up food trip

The first floor is reserved for dining, with all stalls set to open by end of January. Note that the price points aren’t ALL student budget-friendly – some meals can range up to P350 here – but there’s enough variety to go around. The food hub is meant to not only cater to students, but also to families out for the weekend, cycling communities stopping by, or alumni barkadas reuniting on their home turf.

up food trip

It’s a chill and no-frills place to enjoy a well-rounded feast with friends and family, or to relax in the fresh air while having a filling merienda by yourself.

#NowOpen: Food trip!

up food trip

For homemade breads and pastries, Batseg by Bait Lehem (House of Bread) sells freshly-baked Rosemary Garlic Sourdough (P350), Babka Cinnamon (P210), Dark Multi-Grain Loaf (P290), Naan, Blueberry/Mango/Strawberry Danish (P105), Pain Au Chocolat (P90), Beef/Mushroom/Chicken Boureka (P140), and more. Coffee and refreshments are also available here.

up food trip

Beside it is Little Rotti, a humble Indian food stall that serves a decent, tender Butter Chicken (the curry could’ve been thicker) with Roti (P370), that can also be availed with basmati rice. There are also different kinds of shawarma, samosa, and keema akela.

up food trip

It’s hard to miss the quirky, colorful stall of Maginhawa icon Van Gogh is Bipolar, which features an interactive mood wheel on the wall. Based on your current mood, you can choose which of the premium, hand-made teas will benefit you the most – Extra Calming, Light Chill, Upper, Happy Chill, Soothing, or Extra Upper.

up food trip

Each freshly-brewed blend tastes great, especially mixed with raw honey. Enjoy a comforting cuppa here, alongside Van Gogh’s homemade and organic chocolate cakes and cupcakes that will satisfy your sweet tooth, sans any artificial flavorings, refined sugar, and preservatives.

up food trip

For lutong bahay classics, the UP Student Canteen serves Pork Adobo, Corned Beef, Chicken Curry, Bicol Express, Chicken Afritada, and more, with prices ranging from P95 to P150. Discounts for UP students apply! There’s also Cheesy Spaghetti, Carbonara, and Baked Mac, ranging from P85 to P115.

up food trip

Miss Sizz serves hearty sizzling favorites, like Sisig, Porkchop, Tocilog, and Chicken BBQ, ranging from P125 to P165. The must-try, best-selling Angus Burger Steak (P185) features a moist, juicy, and tender burger patty that’s well-seasoned and served with java rice and gravy on a sizzling hot plate.

up food trip

The quaint neighborhood bakery founded in Tarlac in 1972 is also here: Cindy’s Bakery! Homemade cakes by the whole or slice are displayed in a refrigerator, while favorite Pinoy delicacies like egg pie, ensaymada, bread loaves, pandesal, mamon, and more are available to-go from the shelves.

up food trip

Früt Shake serves up refreshingly milky fruit shakes made with fresh fruits, blended on the spot. Try the Guyabano and the Green Mango shakes! The Melon, Banana, Corn, Ripe Mango, and Banana Mango are just as good, too.

up food trip

They cost P110 up to P150 for a 16oz cup. UP student discounts also apply here! Beside it is popular brand Pure Nectar, that sells 100% cold-pressed fruits and veggies juices in to-go bottles.

up food trip

There’s also Ate Rica’s Bacsilog and The Hungry Pita, which serves a tasty shawarma wrap or rice, plus burritos, soft tacos, and cheesy quesadillas served with a sweet-savory yogurt sauce and a cheddar cheese sauce.

up food trip

Bistro Live. Love. Eat. offers 8″ pizzas at P180-P220 each in pepperoni, spinach & mushroom, vegetarian, margherita, and garlic & prawn flavors. They also have filling pastas like bolognese, pesto chicken, pesto prawn, and vegetarian, ranging from P230 to P280.

up food trip

The all-day breakfast menu has beef tapa, bangus, and hungarian sausage at P220, plus snacks like jalapeno sticks, nachos, grilled cheese, and chicken wings ranging from P250-P295. There are also desserts like suman or turon with ice cream and halo-halo (P150-P190), plus drinks like fruit juices and smoothies.

up food trip

Outside is local food truck Pizza Plant, which is one of my favorite vegan pizza joints. Try the freshly-baked, sourdough pizza’s best-selling Garlic Confit and Artichokes with Herb Puree flavor, which tastes fresh, tart, and herby, complemented by Pizza Plant’s spicy honey on the side.

up food trip

The pizzas, which cost around P350 each, are good for 2-3 persons and come in other variants like Italian sausage, margherita, pesto, sisig, pizza blanca, wild mushroom pizza with balsamic onion, spinach dip, and white cheese.

up food trip

Beside it is sister brand Go! Salads, serving up its no-fail smoothies (hello to my favorite Breakfast Smoothie and Guzzler) and fresh salads (Sweet Caroline for me), plus hummus & pita, paninis, iced teas, and other healthy snacks.

up food trip

Other stalls outside are Dimsum Factory for siomai, Baka Masawrap for a beef pares burrito stuffed with rice, sauce, and shredded beef, and the must-try street food stall Inihaws.

up food trip

Inihaws offers the usual inihaw works, which are all grilled on the spot in a traditional, sweet-savory-smoky Pinoy barbecue sauce. Get well-charred betamax, chicken/pork isaw, pork BBQ, tenga ng baboy, hotdog, and even chicken satay by the stick here!

Other stalls that are still boarded up but are soon to open include Salmon HQ for sashimi and sushi; Korean mart and resto Shiku; Nueva Eatcija; Inasal Chicken Bacolod; and Heavens BBQ.

Gyud Food Hub plans to expand to other cities in and outside Metro Manila – stay posted for further updates! Food businesses interested to join the Gyud Food Hub family can get in touch via 0917-5683627 or on Instagram. – Rappler.com

LIST: Top 5 Street Foods You Should Try in UP Diliman!

Words by Gaby Capule & Andres Martinez

Art by Liane Baylosis

up food trip

With the start of face-to-face classes, the UP campus is finally opening to students after two long years. In the midst of such excitement, the essential question for new students comes to mind—Where do we hang out on the campus? And more importantly, where do we eat? Pero ‘wag kayong mag-alala, because UP is known for having delicious and affordable street food that is well-loved by students, faculty, and non-UP-affiliated citizens alike! Here are some food and drinks you must try in the incredibly rich and mouthwatering street food scene of UP Diliman!

up food trip

Y ou can never go wrong with a quick snack or dessert fix from Iskorambol. It's one of the first stalls you'll find in Area 2 when you're coming from Balagtas street! With consecutive classes especially during a hot day, the sweetness of the Iskorambol–priced at only PHP 25 a cup–is sure to give you the burst of energy you need to conquer the day. Each spoonful of the pink concoction, which you can customize with any topping of your choice, is satisfying, delicious, and even nostalgic. It takes you back to your childhood, back when street skrambol was the perfect choice for a sweet merienda. What's more: each cup of skrambol is made with love by our own Aling Nene, and has charmed the hearts of UP and non-UP people alike!

Sizzy’s Sisig

up food trip

At the heart of UP’s street food scene is Sizzy’s Sisig by DJAY’s Food House. For PHP 75 per order, Sizzy’s Sisig provides a heartwarming dish that can happily fill up anyone in search of deliciously sulit eats. Students on a jam-packed schedule will have no problem grabbing a quick hearty meal at Sizzy’s Sisig with the swiftness and convenience of their service. Not only are their products widely renowned for being financially worth it, but their menu is as extensive as it gets—with food items ranging from Filipino classics such as pork sisig and tapsilog, to vegetarian options such as tofu sisig, and specialty dishes such as butterfly squid and hungarian overload. Undoubtedly, Sizzy’s Sisig by DJAY’s Food House remains to be a well-loved comfort food shop among students and faculty alike – thus establishing its reputation as a place where everyone is welcomed and treated as family.

Jing’s Lutong Bahay

up food trip

When thinking of cheap and inexpensive street foods in UP Diliman, what often comes to mind is the iconic Mango Graham shake served at Jing’s Lutong Bahay in Area 2. For PHP 80, you can avail of Jing’s Lutong Bahay’s buy-one-take-one promo that will leave you with one large and one small Mango Graham shake, which can be easily upsized for just an additional PHP 10. Perfect for a hot summer date in the UPD oval, the drink is a must-try for UP students, as it keeps them going after a long day’s work. At first glance, the mango graham combination seems a bit odd, as it features two seemingly different ingredients. That being said, any veteran to the UP street food community will tell you how the drink captures the essence of UP in its utter variety, convenience, and ingenuity—and boy, is it delicious! Whether it be for a much needed sugar rush to get you through your exams, a quick drink to cool you off during the summer, or the pièce de résistance for your birthday celebration, the Mango Graham shake never fails to do the trick.

Laya Coffee

up food trip

What’s a UP student, majoring in pulling all-nighters, without their regular dose of coffee? Fortunately, there’s no need for Starbucks, Tim Horton’s, or Bo’s when we have Laya Coffee on campus! For less than PHP 100, you can have your daily fix of caffeine that can definitely provide you the energy you need to fulfill all your commitments, packaged beautifully in a delicious cup of goodness. For non-coffee drinkers, Laya’s got you, too! The shop also serves milk tea, iced chocolate, and even butterbeer (shoutout to the Potterheads out there)! You may also opt to pair your drink with one of their snacks – may it be the hungarian sausage or their yakitori sandwich-- and voilà, you’ve got a delectable meal that is worth its price. Yum!

Mang Larry’s

up food trip

Although not located in A2, this spot deserves a shout-out nonetheless! The list wouldn’t be complete without the famous isawan on campus, Mang Larry’s! From its humble beginnings three decades ago, Mang Larry’s has grown into a well-known food trip destination for street food enthusiasts. Its current location even has its own parking spots to accommodate its loyal patrons from within and outside the UP community! Mang Larry’s offers assorted street food, such as its popular isaw, fishball, kikiam, squid balls, gizzard, and so much more. At a very affordable price, you can have your fill of Filipino street delicacies at our very own campus.

Photo by Aiko Panajon Martinez from Zomato

May it be breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, or even a quick snack, Area 2 & Mang Larry’s are perfect for famished students, street food enthusiasts, or just anyone looking for a delicious meal that won’t make your wallet cry. The UP street food experience is a prime example of how you don’t need to spend a fortune to taste good food. While most of these stalls have been in the food business for several decades already, it’s clear that their service continues to be loved and appreciated by the community–and for sure, you will too!

Ano, g? Tara, food trip!

The Hungry Guide: UP Diliman and Maginhawa in Quezon City

Rendcel Isip

  • October 27, 2017

Aside from being the home to our Iskos and Iskas, University of the Philippines Diliman is also a place for foodies of all sorts, no matter what their budget or cravings are. In fact, you wouldn't even have to go out of the campus to try out some of them as wherever you go, you surely will find something to munch on!

But if you want to go a bit further and fill your stomachs even more – if tapsilog and burgers and pastas still didn't satisfy you – there's also the famous Maginhawa, which is just a jeepney ride away from the campus.

The Hungry Guide Click The City UP Diliman and Maginhawa Quezon City

We've scouted Taft, and we've dined in Katipunan. Now, we'll be giving you a roundup of some of the places to try around the UP campus and Maginhawa for one hell of a food trip. Don't worry about getting bigger though, you could always jog and sweat all the food out along the UP Academic Oval afterwards  *wink wink*.

Rodic's Diner

Ask any UP student where to go for lunch when in UP, and they'll instantly point you to Rodic's Diner in UP Shopping Center. Having been in business since 1949, their T apsilog  is simply a classic and a must-try for anyone who's ever found themselves in UP. It's everything you ever loved and wanted from a tapa, fried rice, and fried egg combo – only better!

Aside from their classic Tapsilog, you may also choose from the other  lutong bahay  dishes available, like Pork Sinigang (P99), Kare-Kare (P99), and Caldereta (P99).

Also located in UP Shopping Center, Mashitta is the place to be if you're craving for Korean-Japanese food while on a budget. They serve Kimbap, Ramyeon, Rice Meals, and Udon in a huge portions and at an affordable price. If it's your first time dining there, you could try their OmuKatzu (P179) , which is omurice paired with breaded pork and shrimp, and served on a hot plate.

Iskorambol and Iskomai

Located along Area 2 (JP Laurel St.), these two stalls serve, you guessed it, ice scramble and siomai. For only  P20,  you already get a large cup of their famous Iskorambol, guaranteed to take you back to your childhood days. An additional P3 gets you to add whatever topping and syrup you want. That includes mallows, rice crispies, fruit loops, and more!

Whether it's for lunch or for merienda, the Iskomai is the perfect filling meal to have. For only  P25 , you already get 6 pieces of their Iskomai and you only need to add an extra P10 for a cup of rice, making it a complete meal!

Rambo's Steak and Destroy

Rambo's is a skate-themed restaurant located along Area 2 usually frequented by students and foodies alike for their famous  Steakey Peralta (P155) . Named after the famous skateboarder Stacy Peralta, this dish is basically T-Bone Steak, marinated in paprika and thyme, pan-grilled, and served with egg, garlic kangkong and mushroom, rice, and a cup of gravy.

It may seem a bit expensive compared to the other places in the area, but if you get steak that's half the size of your plate, we'd say it's still a pretty good steal for a really hungry and craving person!

The Snack Shack

Another crowd-favorite in the UP Campus is The Snack Shack where you could get really good burgers at budget-friendly prices. Depending on how hungry you are, you can choose from the  Quarter Pounder (P80)  or the  Half-Pounder (P155),  both of which come with a grilled patty that's 100% beef, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cheese, and condiments. If you want to customize your burger, you may do so and add jalapeño, barbeque sauce, cream cheese, and garlic chips for only  P25  per add-on. Extra cheese and extra veggies? You could also have it added to your burger for a small fee!

Owen's

For a quick pasta fix, look no further than Area 2's Owen's. For only  P95 , you already get to choose from the 11 kinds of pasta which they only cook as soon as you order. If it's your first time and you're unsure which to get, you may always ask the cook as to what he recommends. In our case, it's the Creamy Chicken Pesto  which balances the herby and creamy flavors of the pesto and the white sauce they blend together.

You could also ask them to put some chili flake on your pasta if you want it a bit on the spicier side!

Mang Larry's Isawan

A UP food trip will never be complete without a visit to Mang Larry's Isawan. Choose from their different kinds of grilled skewers – Isaw baboy , Isaw manok, Goto, Tainga (Pig ears) , Balun-Balunan (Chicken Gizzard) , Atay (Liver) ,  and more – all of which are priced from  P6  to  P10  per stick.

The classic  isawan  is currently along Balagtas Street, near Area 2 and Bahay ng Alumni. If it ends up relocating again, though, don't worry because the regulars and the Iskos can always help you find it again.

Arki Vickie

Located near the Architecture Building, Arki Vickie is ,ore than your ordinary sari-sari store. They serve a mean  Siomai Egg (P40 for 4 pieces),  which may seem like your regular siomai until you take a bite inyo iy, revealing a whole quail that might just be all you need to fill you up for for the next period!

To pair with their Siomai Egg, make sure to get your hands on Ate Vickie's  Pantea (P30),  their version of the Pandan Milk Tea. Sweet and refreshing, it's the perfect drink to beat the heat while in UP.

Art Circle Cafe

A post shared by Art Circle Cafe (@artcirclecafe) on May 4, 2017 at 3:28pm PDT

Combining art and food in one hub is Art Circle Cafe in Bahay ng Alumni. If you're one who wants to enjoy good food, look at art, chill with friends, or review for an exam over a cup of coffee, you may do it here. They serve brunch food, rice meals, pasta, cakes, and more, as well as local and organic coffee which they source from Sagada, Kalinga, and Benguet.

If you want to go for the crowd-favorite, make sure to try their Lucban's Finest Longganisa (195) – available all day – and pair it with a cup of Sagada coffee (P60/cup; P100, good for 2 people) .

Ally's All-Day Breakfast Place

Ally's All Day Breakfast Place is where the breakfast food lovers could go any time of the day. Whether it's pancakes, waffles, or fried rice and eggs combo you're craving, you can most certainly find it here. For the first-timers, their Speculoos (P235: 1 piece; P285: 2 pieces)  is a must-try. It's one or two pieces of waffles topped with cookie butter crumbs, walnuts, ice cream, and drizzled with cookie butter spread, and caramel syrup.

If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, you may also create your own pancakes/waffles here. The price depends on what you put on your plate – from the base and base flavors to the toppings and sides you wish to add!

Friulli Trattoria

A staple Italian place in Maginhawa, Friulli Trattoria still remains to be one of the restaurants where you can get good pizza and pasta at an affordable price. Ranging only from P185 to P270, you already get a pizza that's big enough to share with your friends! If your feeling lost and confused because of the many kinds of pizza they have, try out their bestsellers:  Viva Venezia (P225) ,  Margherita (P195),  and Tre Formaggi (P200) .

For the pasta person, you can never go wrong with their  Capellini ala Putanesca (P145) , which is made of angel hair pasta, tomatoes, capers, anchovies, and olives. You can also try their  Spaghetti con Il Tonoe Funglio (P125)  which is a spaghetti in spicy white sauce, tuna, and mushrooms.

Caution Hot! Spicy Noodle House

If a comforting bowl of noodles is what you're craving for, Caution Hot! is where you go! Aside from their flavorful offerings, diners get to customize their own bowls, so they have the liberty of choosing everything – from the broth (Asam Laksa, Szechuan, or Pork Broth), noodles (Wheat or Egg Noodles), toppings (veggie, pork, beef, seafood), and even the burn level (first, second, third, or ultimate)! The prices vary depending on the toppings you prefer.

For the crowd-favorite, order their  Beef – Szechuan – Egg Noodles (P205)  and adjust the burn level depending on how spicy you want it. Have  it with either the  Kuchay Pork Dumplings (P120)  and  Pork Dumplings (P150)  and you'll be leaving the place stuffed!

Leona's Art Restaurant

Leona's Art Restaurant

A hidden gem in Maginhawa, Leona is a homey restaurant that serves pizza, pasta, and rice meals in prices that won't hurt your wallets. While they offer pizzas that are familiar to the taste buds, you can also try their Good Morning Pizza (P330 for 10in; P500 for 14in) , which is topped with sliced spicy sausages, sunny side up egg, basil, shiitake buttons, and oyster mushrooms.

When it comes to their pastas, diners also get to choose the size of their servings, depending on how hungry they are or if they're sharing it with friends. The  Chicken and Pesto Pasta (P180 for solo; P370 for a platter)  is a bestseller. It's spaghetti in pesto sauce with grilled chicken thigh fillet and served with parmesan cheese, basil, fried garlic, cayenne powder, and toasted bread.

For unique burgers and good puns, head over to BeefX where you can choose and customize whatever goes into your burger. The standard Beef Bacon or Longganisa Burger would cost you  P125,  but if you want to upgrade it, you can add extra for a Pizza Bun (P80)  with cheese and pepperoni on top or their Waffle Bun (P60).

Ordering their drinks is also an experience. Whether it's their  Pink Potion with Feelings  or  Blue Potion with Emotion  you want to try, you'll definitely be surprised as to how they will serve it to you. Make sure to bring some  hugot  with you while you're there, okay? We promise it will be put to good use!

Up In the Clouds

To cap off your food trip in Maginhawa, make sure to drop by Up In the Clouds. Choose from a wide variety of unique ice cream flavors they have, and decide whether you want to have it in a Cloud Cup (P95) or a Cloud Cone (P110) – cloud, being a ring of the fluffiest cotton candy you'd see. Some of the flavors to choose from include Butterbeer, Avotella, Maple and Candied Bacon, Malted Milk, The Dark Side of The Forest, and more.

If you want to bring home your ice cream, though, you can have it ordered in a  To-Go Cup (P110)  or a Pint (P360).

10 places to visit in a up diliman food trip.

IMG_1427

Art Circle Gallery Cafe in Bahay ng Alumni

Like the two other restaurants inside Bahay ng Alumni, dining here is a bit pricier than other spots in the list. But it’s also a lot more comfortable especially during hot days. The whole place is air-conditioned. The restaurant is quiet and cozy. From its name alone, one could expect an ambiance that is both creative and relaxing, and The Art Circle Gallery Cafe does not disappoint.

So far, the  Spicy Pasta Negra  is my favorite. The squid and the spaghetti are the perfect kind of chewy, and the sauce is bursting with flavor–especially once the lemon is added.

UP Diliman Food Trip

Area 2 is the most interesting to write about; it seems to deserve a separate article. The whole road is a stretch of kiosks and garages-turned-restaurants where you could get siomai, shawarma, fruit shakes, coffee shakes, bulalo, milk tea, bagnet, and many more. Some are classics, and some are promising new food concepts. It’s continuously evolving, so I spot something new almost everytime I visit. These are some of my favorites:

Endless Summer  has a variety of delicious shakes in their menu. The best part is you could customize them and invent your own recipe on the spot. I usually get the one with bananas and nutella, but all my friends have their own favorites.

McDok’s  serves happiness on a sizzling plate. The sizzling sisig and the  roast beef with a generous serving of gravy are some of the dishes my friends and I always order.

UP Diliman Food Trip

Restaurant of Choice (R.O.C) in Bahay ng Alumni

R.O.C lives up to its name by offering a great selection of pizza, pasta, rice dishes, desserts, and drinks. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, and the ambiance is conducive for meetings and individual study sessions.

My friends and I tried their panizza, which is very affordable considering it’s good for sharing.

After years of being a loyal customer, my favorite is still the Marsala Chops . The superstar in this dish is not just the porkchop, but the generous helping of creamy sauce all over it. Other recommendable favorites include their iced mocha, garlic chicken, and pesto cream.

ZAM_9121

The Chocolate Kiss Cafe in Bahay ng Alumni

The Chocolate Kiss Cafe first opened in January 1997. 18 years later, the Chocolate Kiss sits up to 140 people daily–but there are days when these aren’t enough to accommodate all the people who want to enjoy their food.

Apart from the dishes in the photos, you could also try their cakes and beverages. They serve unlimited brewed iced tea, and iced cappuccino–both worth their prices.

UP Diliman Food Hub opens

up food trip

A new food center in Diliman, Quezon City, is open to the public.

The UP Diliman Food Hub, with a landmark two-story multipurpose hall located along E. Jacinto St. near University Avenue and across the College of Fine Arts, was inaugurated on December 21, 2022, already with several concessionaires offering a wide enough array of food choices.

University officials announced that food would be discounted for UP students, faculty members, administration staff, and researchers, ranging from 5% to 15%, with payment transactions facilitated by their Paymaya-enabled IDs.

The UP Food Hub was also designed to become a congregation and activity area, with food courts located indoors and al fresco under the shade of trees. According to the project brief: “The Site Development of the UPD Food Park is meant to aptly handle vehicular parking needs that otherwise will be overflowing towards E. Jacinto St.”

Leading the inauguration and unveiling of the marker were UP President Danilo Concepcion, Vice President for Development Elvira Zamora, UP Diliman Chancellor Fidel Nemenzo, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Louise Jashil Sonido, Benedict Diamat,  Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Quezon City Second District Construction Chief, representing District Engineer Ramon Devanadera, and master lessee Jose Vizco.

Concepcion especially thanked the DPWH, then headed by Secretary Mark Villar, for allocating the budget for and constructing the complex. He emphasized that the core idea behind the project was “ginhawa” or convenience, wider choices, and discounts for UP students.

“This food hub will offer our growing community a wider range of food choices,” affirmed Nemenzo. “This is a signal that UP Diliman is again opening up [to the public],” he added, referring to the restrictions imposed in the wake of the pandemic. Sonido expressed the hope that the venue would also be a model for environmental sustainability in line with a campus-wide goal.

Food Trip: Neighborhood Destinations in Manila

food trip neighborhood destinations

Looking for alternative dining destinations instead of malls? Here are some of the best neighborhoods and food streets around Metro Manila with top 5 recommendations per area. Take note that a lot of these places are mainly residential areas, so traffic and parking can be a bit of a problem. To counter this, we usually just walk or bike when we explore other neighborhoods for food-trips.

Table of Contents

MAGINHAWA & MALINGAP STREET Teacher’s Village, Quezon City

I may be biased because I live in the area, but Teacher’s Village in Diliman, Quezon City has become an extremely popular destination for food trips now. It seems that every week, a new restaurant opens up along the long stretch of Maginhawa Street from Philcoa to V. Luna Extension and has spread to surrounding side streets like Malingap and Magiting. There are several board game cafes and a LOT of food parks in the area, making it popular with the student crowd.

Z the zone outdoor foodcourt malingap

MY TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Z Compound (Meshwe’s Beef Shawarma Plate, Falafel, Hummus)
  • Friuli Trattoria (Tre Formaggi & Margherita Pizza)
  • Tomato Kick (Seafood Marinara Pasta, Skewers, Fajitas)
  • Roberta’s Flavours of Asia (3-Way Appetizers: Tawilis, Catfish mango salad + Gising-Gising combo, Pad Thai)
  • Griddle (Steak, Lime Pork Belly, chicken wings)

READ MORE: Maginhawa: The Eat Street

PROS: Laid-back vibe, good food, lots of choices, food parks offer variety, budget-friendly prices.

CONS:  Traffic. Limited parking. Lack of bike parking. The new buildings are killing the neighborhood vibe of the place. It can get crowded during weekends.

  • Estimated budget per person: P200-P400 each
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: MRT Kamuning / LRT Anonas
  • Best place to park:  Street (if you’re lucky). Adjacent or parallel side streets and buildings with their own parking lots.

KAPITOLYO Pasig

Another popular neighborhood foodie destination is Barangay Kapitolyo, Pasig. While the nearby Capitol Commons has a lot of upscale restaurants and bars, the stretch of East Capitol Drive and nearby streets like Brixton and United Street have more budget-friendly options that offer everything from comfort food, desserts, to international specialties. My personal favorites here include Silantro Fil-Mex Cantina, CAB Cafe and RUB Ribs & BBQ. I heard there’s also a newly opened food park in the area called Gastropark Kapitolyo Food Park .

silantro kapitolyo pasig

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS FROM  Pinas Muna :

  • Wooden Spoon
  • Grande Torino
  • St. Patrick’s Pub

READ MORE: Best Restaurants in Kapitolyo

PROS: Good ambiance. Restaurants with clear concepts and “Instagrammable” interiors.

CONS: Parking. Some restaurants are a bit pricey. Can get crowded during weekends.

  • Estimated budget per person: P300 – P500
  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  MRT Edsa-Shaw / Boni
  • Best place to park:  Pioneer Centre Supermart or Ace Water Spa

LILAC STREET Marikina

Marikina is not only the shoe capital of the Philippines, it’s also a great destination for foodies. You can find a lot of unique cafes scattered in different parts of Marikina such as  Industriya Marikina, Rustic Mornings and Mama Chit’ s. However, if you want to focus on only one area, a lot of hip new restaurants are concentrated on Lilac Street, Rainbow Street and Sapphire Street in Concepcion Dos. We’ve only tried Some Kind of Wonderful Cafe (SKOW) there, but plan to explore the rest of the area soon.

11. Some Kind of Wonderful Marikina bikes

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS FROM  All Over Marikina :

  • Brad & Pit’s Rib Shack (try their Rib Mountain with Burrito Rice)
  • Cookie Mug (cookie shots with caramel, or milk, or chocolate)
  • Mandi’s Grill Grub (Crispy ribs with bechamel sauce)
  • Chubbie’s Qcina (pancit con lechon!!)
  • Mogu Tree Noodle House (laksa with cheese please!)

READ MORE: Marikina Food Tour: Exploring Lilac Street

PROS: Homey restaurants. Budget-friendly options. Some bike-friendly establishments.

CONS: Traffic, parking. Some restaurants are hard to find. It’s easy to get lost if you’re not familiar with the place. One way streets.

  • Estimated budget per person: P200 – P400
  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  LRT Santolan
  • Best place to park:  Street. Restaurants with their own parking spaces.

MANDALUYONG

  • Kanto Freestyle
  • Chef Arch’s Lime 88
  • Tabing Ilog
  • The Food Cathedral
  • The Deli at Shaw

READ MORE: Where to Eat in Mandaluyong

PROS: Laid-back vibe. Budget-friendly options. Unpretentious atmosphere.

CONS: Traffic, parking. The area is prone to floods even if it doesn’t rain. Roads being constructed around Mandaluyong City Hall make getting to the area a hassle.

  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  EDSA Boni
  • Best place to park:  Street (if you’re lucky). Don’t bring a car.

BINONDO Manila

Chinese New Year isn’t the only time to head to Binondo, Manila’s own Chinatown. Home to some of Manila’s oldest restaurants and small family-owned establishments, this cultural enclave offers authentic Cantonese food and history on the side. In fact, Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks offers a walking and eating tour called the Big Binondo Wok all year around (which I’ve participated in twice). Navigating the narrow alleys is best done on foot to avoid getting stuck in traffic and to work up an appetite.

dong-bei-dumplings -binondo woman

MY TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Dong Bei Dumplings (kuchay and pork dumplings, deep-fried scallion cakes, tofu Burger, xiao long bao)
  • New Po-Heng Lumpia House (lumpia)
  • Sincerity Cafe & Restaurant (fried chicken, oyster cake)
  • Cafe Mezzanine ( Kiampong, s tir-fried tofu, wintermelon tea)
  • Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli (take-out goodies, crispy mikiron)

READ MORE: Food Trip: Binondo

PROS: The authentic hole-in-the wall establishments, budget-friendly prices and old-world charm.

CONS:  Limited parking, traffic, crowds. Some restaurants (like Estero Fast Food) are kind of scary if you have a weak stomach.

  • Estimated budget per person: P300 – P500 per person
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: LRT Carriedo Station (walking distance)
  • Best place to park:  Lucky Chinatown Mall and then walk to the area.

LITTLE BAGUIO San Juan City

For those who find the commercialized restaurants in Greenhills Shopping Center too expensive, Little Baguio in San Juan City offers a lot of alternatives. P. Guevarra and Wilson are jampacked with Chinese restaurants while side streets are lined with interesting cafes and pubs catering to residents. I haven’t really explored this place yet, but we recently tried Balkan Express, one of the few places that serves Serbian food in the city.

balkan express little baguio san juan

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS :

  • Hong Kong Eat Fresh
  • Balkan Express
  • Cafe Ysabel
  • Little Store
  • Yen Yen Taiwan Street Food

READ MORE: Top 15 Most Popular Restaurants in Little Baguio, San Juan City

PROS: Interesting food choices, unique cuisine.

CONS : Limited parking, traffic, some of the streets are a bit dark and scary at night. Pricey food compared to other neighborhoods.

  • Estimated budget per person: P400 – P600 per person
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: Ortigas / Santolan-Annapolis
  • Parking: Street.

POBLACION Makati City

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • El Chupacabra
  • Le Cafe Curieux
  • Tambai Yakitori
  • The Filling Station

READ MORE: The Secrets of Brgy. Poblacion Food Street  by Our Awesome Planet

PROS:  Interesting food choices. Cool vibe at night. Feels like you’re in a different country. Lots of beer available.

CONS : Traffic. Parking. Pricey food and drinks compared to other neighborhood joints (but still generally cheaper than malls).

  • Estimated budget per person: P400 – P600 per person (more if you’re drinking)
  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  MRT Buendia
  • Best place to park:  Power Plant Mall or A. Venue Mall.

AGUIRRE AVENUE BF Homes, Paranaque

For those based in the South, Aguirre Avenue in BF Homes, Paranaque seems to be the most hip neighborhood to eat. I have not explored this area because it’s just too far from where I live, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about the restos from residents of Paranaque, Las Pinas and Muntinlupa. The area is home to lots of unique, family-owned restaurants and well-known chains like Conti’s and Tito Chef (which eventually branched out) and trendy restaurants you can only find here like The Girl + The Bill and Magnum Opus Fine Coffees.

09. microtel acropolis - tito chef - lamb paella

Aussie Lamb Paella from Tito Chef’s branch in Microtel Acropolis (I haven’t been to the one in BF yet)

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS from James ( @killrfillr ):

  • Fat Butchiks
  • Larcy’s

Why We Travel For Food And So Should You

Culinary vacations are becoming more popular now than ever before. We’ve all started to realize that many of our favorite things to do on vacation and the strongest memories we take back home with us have to do with food.

Maybe you took a really great food tour , or you learned to make pasta in Italy, or you ate at a particularly amazing fine dining restaurant. Those are all cherished memories now.

Have you ever noticed how even the faint aroma of something you ate on vacation instantly takes you back to when you experienced it? Tasting an Argentinian Malbec transports me to a tasting room in Mendoza . The smell of galangal and lime instantly brings to mind the Thai cooking class we took in Chiang Mai.

Ho Chi Minh Cooking class

Even the sight of choclo (really large corn) gets me excited for the intense flavors of Peruvian food . Just ask Nick – “big corn”, makes me unreasonably excited. Food is powerful. It’s what makes us who we are as a people. It is an essential part of life and community.

In fact, I seriously question whether you can experience the real, authentic side of a culture without experiencing the food.

After all, what is Thailand without a plate of Pad Thai, China without Dim Sum, Canada without poutine, Mexico without street tacos?

Indulging in Michelin starred restaurants , veering off the beaten path to where they make the best fried noodles, immersing yourself in pasta making in Chianti, or even accepting a dare to eat balut in the Philippines – these are the things vibrant memories are made of. Check out these vegetarian food experiences too!

Top Foodie Vacations Around the World

We are always searching for culinary vacations that promise incredible dining options, fun food-inspired experiences and some really good wine to wash it all down with.

And while there are so many great locations around the world that satisfy that craving, some stand out more than others in the culinary department. I have to admit, even picking only 21 destinations that we think are foodie heaven is hard – there are so many!

When it comes to foodie destinations, the best ones have irresistible food that’s you can’t find anywhere else. Some will immediately come to mind, like Italy and Spain. Others you have to search a little for.

1. Mendoza, Argentina

Restaurant at Bodega Ruca Malen

Some of the best wines come out of Mendoza, but did you know about its culinary scene? Mendoza is a perfect spot for foodies who want to enjoy all three of pillars of good travel in one destination: good food, wine and adventures.

Many of the top wineries in the region serve impressive multi-course wine lunches from their winery restaurants that have often have breathtaking views of the Andes from every seat and include as much wine as you want to drink.

Visit these wineries and restaurants for a complete foodie experience in Mendoza:

  • Bodega Ruca Malen (lunch and wine tasting)
  • Andeluna Cellars (lunch and wine tasting)
  • The Vines of Mendoza (for a comprehensive tasting)
  • Siete Fuegos (Fine dining on an open fire — and stay at The Vines Resort & Spa – check prices and read reviews )

2. Paris, France

Escargot in France

When people plan their trips to Paris, they tend to forget that the city is a foodie paradise, even though it’s in France. There are so many fun food things to do in Paris that will enhance your sightseeing, help you build lasting memories, and create a diverse and interesting itinerary.

With so many delicious French foods to try, croissants and Croque Monsieurs belong right there alongside the Eiffel Tower and Sacre-Coeur. No vacation to the French capital is complete without trying the foods that make the country so unique – yes, escargot and frog’s legs included!

Whether that’s a stop off one of Paris’ many street food markets to check out the products, at a local crepe stand, or on a full-day food tour , there are many ways to taste and enjoy Paris.

If you have extra time, you can also get outside of the city to either the Bordeaux wine regio n or Champagne wine region . Reims and Epernay are two of the main Champagne cities to visit to learn more about French wines .

3. Tuscany, Italy

Pici pasta

One of the top things on most foodie’s bucket lists is to take cooking classes in Italy . We dream of making tender, homemade pasta and rich meaty tomato sauces, drinking wine in Tuscany and eating briny olives and antipasto on the terrace overlooking the vineyards.

This experience can be found all over Italy — there’s no shortage of cooking schools and wine tasting tours.

One of our favorite areas in Tuscany is Chianti. Not only is it absolutely gorgeous and easy to get around (see our self-guided Chianti tour ideas), there are dozens of amazing Chianti Classico wines to try. Here are some of our favorite places to stay in Tuscany for wine tasting.

I’ve always been enchanted with Montepulciano, as well.

Montepulciano is a charming hilltop town in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, known for its picturesque streets, historic architecture, and world-class wineries. The town is surrounded by rolling hills covered in vineyards, and the local wine industry is a major part of the economy and culture.

There are several wineries in and around Montepulciano that offer tours and tastings, like Avignonesi, Poliziano, and Boscarelli.

4. San Sebastian, Spain

Gambas

It might not be a major cosmopolitan city like Paris or London , but San Sebastian is perhaps the greatest food destination in the world, with more Michelin stars per capita than any other city and a thriving pintxos scene that you won’t believe until you see it.

It makes the list not only because of the overabundance of haute cuisine, but because it is literally paradise, with its incredible view over the crescent bay and the beautiful La Concha Beach. There are three 3-star restaurants, among a handful of 1- and 2-starred places, plus a plethora of pintxos bars serving gourmet-style bites that are just as good as any fancy meal you’ve ever had.

Gandarias Bar

  • Here’s a great evening pintxos tour in San Sebastian that you’ll love.
  • Arzak – 3-stars — one of the top restaurants in the world — not to be missed.

Just an hour or so from San Sebastian is the Rioja wine region of Spain, where you’ll also find some really incredible food from Michelin star chefs and formidable home-style restaurants. One of the funnest foodie things we’ve ever done was a pinchos crawl down the tiny streets of Logrono, Spain. It’s a foodie’s dream!

5. Bordeaux, France

Duck Confit

Combine the delicious wines of Bordeaux with the gorgeous scenery and you have the vacation every foodie has been dreaming about in France. You should plan for at least a week in Bordeaux to give it justice. You can spend two days in the Left Bank and two days in the Right Bank , and still only scratch the surface of the wine and food possibilities.

Also, be sure to spend time in the center of Bordeaux, where we found some really incredible food options, from wine bars to street food markets. The newly opened wine museum is also very much worth a visit.

A bike tour through Bordeaux is perfect for wine enthusiasts, foodies and really anyone who wants to enjoy the countryside while biking through some of the world’s most beautiful vineyards.

bordeaux

You can enjoy a winery biking tour through the Left Bank or the Right Bank. The area around Saint Emillion is my favorite, and it’s flat and easy to ride.

Imagine foie gras, duck confit, and black truffles paired with bold and complex Bordeaux wines. You’ll be having gourmet lunches and dinners paired with world-class wine every day. It doesn’t get any better than this.

6. New York City, New York, USA

Katz Delicatessen

New York City is also a culinary capital of the world. Here you’ll find incredible food everywhere, from street vendors to Michelin-starred restaurants and even a few completely outrageous foods that you won’t find anywhere else.

Culinary trends seem to start and end in NYC. But one of the things that makes this city so great is the high number of really talented chefs that call it home. Most of them have restaurants there that aren’t insanely hard to get into, so you can eat dinner made by a master. Some to check out are Le Bernardin, Eleven Madison Park, and Cosme (by the legendary Mexico City chef of Pujol ).

Be sure to also make it to favorites like Katz Delicatessen, Momofuku Noodle Bar, and the Peter Luger steakhouse. You’ll also find huge, thin slices of New York Pizza, street hot dogs, Jewish delis, extravagant brunches. It’s all there waiting for you to discover.

7. Tokyo, Japan

Sushi Matsue in Tokyo

I’m a huge sushi fan. Who isn’t, right? In Tokyo, you will find the freshest, best, most amazing sushi in the world. If that’s not reason enough to head to Japan for your next foodie vacation, I don’t know what else I can say – WAIT, yes I do.

How about the really fun, totally cool izakayas you can find in all the back alleys and small crevices around the city. It sounds like dive bar quality, but it’s so not. In fact, it’s an adventurous foodie’s dream. Or the old Tsukiji outer market , which is an absolute must visit in Tokyo.

You’ll see foods you’ve never heard of before , even lots of unique Japanese drinks , and get to sample tons of things along the way. In Japan, you can eat the best of every type of food they make, from gyoza to okonomiyaki to ramen and takoyaki. Nearly every chef is a master at his cuisine.

Another great activity in Tokyo for food lovers is participating in a traditional tea ceremony. You can see what it’s all about and learn the proper manners in an informal ceremony in Hamarikyu Gardens . These things and more are part of our complete 3-day foodie guide to Tokyo.

8. Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand food

I think Thai food is very much a universally loved cuisine. Getting to try authentic Thai dishes the way they were meant to be eaten (at a night market or from a street vendor in Thailand ) is one of the best culinary experiences I’ve ever had.

In Bangkok, there are opportunities for cooking classes , food tours, street food for every meal, even Michelin star restaurants. For an even more unique experience, head out of town to the nearby floating markets to witness something you won’t see anywhere else. Make sure you try the mangosteens. Oh so good.

The best thing about Bangkok food is that there is a lot of it everywhere. There used to be street food vendors dispersed throughout the city, but now there are conglomerations of food stalls that you can find in the city. Some of our favorites are Bangkok’s Chinatown Market, Wang Lang Market, and the Chatuchak weekend market.

No matter where you’re staying, there is likely a street food market nearby. Be sure to keep your eyes open as you walk around. Street food is definitely the way to go in Bangkok. It’s so cheap and it’s delicious.

9. London, England

Afternoon tea at London Bridge Hotel

Another big city that is often overlooked as a food destination is London . But don’t make this mistake! London is the food capital of the world. No where will you find the array of international food choices , dining experiences , and foodie activities  that you will find in London.

People often think London doesn’t have good food – or that it consists merely of fish and chips and pub food. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, London is one of the biggest food cities in the world. You can find every type of cuisine imaginable in the city. Plus, where else in the world can you find nearly dozens of afternoon tea choices ?

You can browse around London’s many markets , including Camden Market and  Borough Market – which are two of our favorites, or you can stop for a street food break at the really cool and fun Boxpark in Shoreditch.

We absolutely love Soho for the dizzying array of food choices. You can’t walk three steps without coming up a different restaurant, wine bar, pub, waffle bar, gelateria – you name it.

10. Melbourne, Australia

Kingfish sashimi at Chin Chin in Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia, is a great food city, with many great restaurants to check out around the city. Some of our favorite restaurants in Melbourne are located on Flinders Lane. Two that I highly recommend are Chin Chin and Lucy Liu.

While staying in Melbourne, don’t miss the opportunity to get out to the wonderful Yarra Valley wine region. There are more than a dozen of wineries to visit. It’s a cool climate, so they produce a lot of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and some sparkling.

We love food and wine events, and Melbourne, Australia is home to one of the best, the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival . The festival extends for 17 days in March and features global culinary superstars who host events, create unforgettable dishes for participants to sample and draw crowds of over 250,000 each year.

11. Stellenbosch, South Africa

Wine tasting at Spier

Only an hour outside of Cape Town is the Stellenbosch Wine Region of South Africa. Of all the places we’ve been to for wine tasting, Stellenbosch is my favorite. The winery experience is so much more inviting and relaxed here.

You can take a tour with a group, so you don’t have to drive yourself, or you can plan your own winery tour with a designated driver. When you arrive at a winery, you’ll be able to  relax at a table or on a comfy couch and have the wine samples brought to you.

The region also has a large number of top restaurants with chef’s who know the wine well and create masterpieces that live up to the wine.  Some of the best foodie things in Stellenbosch:

  • Rust en Vrede Restaurant
  • Overture at Hidden Valley Restaurant
  • Spier Winery and Eight at Spier Restaurant
  • Visit Stellenbrau Brewery

When you’re done eating your way through Stellenbosch, there’s another nearby wine region to explore: Franschhoek. Both areas are well known for their gourmet cuisine and fine wines.

  • Full Day Afrivista Wine Tours from Stellenbosch

12. Bologna, Italy

Food tour in Italy, parmigiano factory

While there are many touristy things to do in Bologna and the surrounding area, it truly is one of the best culinary vacation spots in the world.

There are so many food experiences to have in this area, from a full blown DOP food tour that takes you to a Parmigiano-Reggiano factory, a Parma ham production facility, and a home where traditional Balsamic vinegar is made, to a more intimate cooking class in the city, you simply will not run out of food-related things to do.

The Emilia-Romagna area (of which Bologna is the capital), is known for its wine, but you may think it’s only home to the sparkling semi-sweet Lambrusco wine. Lambrusco is found mostly in the northern part of the region, but Romagna makes mostly Sangiovese red wines, in a style not too different from neighboring Tuscany.

A wine-tasting trip to Romagna will reveal a whole new world of wine you didn’t know was out there.

13. Mexico City, Mexico

torta

When we were preparing to go to Mexico City , thoughts of indulging in real, authentic Mexican food were all I could think about. I could eat burritos, carnitas, enchiladas, tacos and guacamole all day, every day and be perfectly content.

If that sounds like something you might say, then a culinary trip to Mexico City should definitely be at the top of your list! There are a lot of great eating experiences to have around Mexico City. We found some really great restaurants , like Pujol and Maximo Bistrot. We tried many different mezcals and tequilas, and spent an entire day wandering around Mercado Roma, tasting awesome foods.

We also highly recommend taking a food tour – we like this historic center food tour . You may even want to try your hand at making some of these foods – if you’ve never handmade a tortilla, I think it might be time you tried!

Here’s a cooking class that includes a food market tour.

14. Dotonbori, Osaka, Japan

Okonomiyaki - an Osaka specialty

When it comes to food, Japan has more dishes to love than nearly anywhere. But for me, the star of the show is one single street in Osaka, called Dotonbori . And one of my favorite things to eat there is the famous Osaka dish, Okonomiyaki, pictured above. Dōtonbori is one of the principal tourist destinations in Osaka.

It runs along the Dōtonbori canal from Dōtonboribashi Bridge to Nipponbashi Bridge in the Namba district of the city. It’s not a huge area. It covers only about 8 blocks. But it is absolutely jam packed with restaurants, food stalls and street vendors selling every type of food specialty Japan is known for. I would make a special foodie trip to Japan, just to visit Dotonbori and eat my heart out.

Around 5pm, Dotonbori Osaka turns from a fairly quiet, mostly deserted street, into a bustling and utterly jam-packed food metropolis with lines of hungry people queued up to buy trays of hot-off-the-grill gyoza , yakisoba, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, sukiyaki! If you can eat it, they are selling it. On Dotonbori food is king!

15. Lima, Peru

Peruvian Chicharones

You wouldn’t think it, would you? But Peru was named the top South America Food & Drink Destination by Frommer’s and for very good reason. Peru has a multicultural population that includes immigrants from Spain , China, Japan and more, and that helps to create a thriving food scene with regional variations that are unique and unexplored.

Lima’s signature dishes, like ceviche and chicharones, are becoming favorites around the world and opening people’s eyes to the flavors of Peru. (Read our guide on foods you must try in Peru.) Restaurants like Astrid & Gaston have been delighting foodies for many years in Lima.

Superchef Gaston Acurio of La Mar and many others are priming the city with a modern take on traditional favorites. Now is the time to experience Peru’s food scene, before it is fully discovered.

16. New Orleans, Louisiana

Lobster PoBoy

New Orleans food expands way past typical American food. It has a style and culture all its own, with Creole and French influences. It’s an amazing place to explore if you’re a foodie who likes to try new things.

Not only does New Orleans have an abundance of great chefs and dining experiences , it also boasts a rather sophisticated cocktail scene. Many of the cocktails served in New Orleans are routed in the city’s eclectic past, and come not only with a swizzle stick, but a long history that you’ll want to hear all about.

17. Copenhagen, Denmark

Ceviche of trout with cucumbers

A must-do on many foodie’s list is Copenhagen , Denmark, to eat at  Noma , a highly acclaimed restaurant that’s spent many years at the top of the  The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Chef/owner Rene Redzepi knows how to delight diners with his ultra-modern menu, now in a new location on the edge of Christiania. However, Noma remains very difficult to get into, not to mention expensive.

Even if you can’t make it to Noma, Copenhagen is blessed with chefs who came out of the Noma kitchen to build their own restaurants like 108, Amass, and Sanchez.

A few of our favorite options in Copenhagen are 1 Michelin star Relae, the first all-organic restaurant to make the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, Baest (from the same owners), and 2 Michelin starred AOC.

For a more laid back food experience, head to the trendy food-filled Reffen on Copenhagen’s industrial Refshaleøen, where food trucks and stalls sell high quality International dishes.

18. Hong Kong

Roast Goose

Hong Kong a wonderful food city, with all kinds of great food stalls, restaurants, and dishes with many cultural influences to try. One of the best ways to acquaint yourself with the food and to discover some of the best places to eat and drink in Hong Kong is by taking a food tour.

There are a dizzying number of restaurants in the city, not to mention foods that many Western travelers haven’t even heard of before. Let an expert guide you through the experience. Probably the most iconic food in Hong Kong is dim sum. There are even a few super affordable dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong with Michelin stars.

You must go to one of these top-rated restaurants to order a full meal of dim sum. For a Michelin-star meal, head to Tim Ho Wan. Another one to try is One Dim Sum . Roast goose is the dish I will never forget. It’s an iconic Hong Kong dish that you absolutely must try. The crunchy skin and layer of rendered fat over tender meat. It’s a thing of true joy.

We ordered roast goose in a tiny restaurant called Yat Lok Roast Goose in the Central neighborhood on Hong Kong Island.

19. Istanbul, Turkey

Turkish meze

One of the best places you can travel to for an amazing foodie trip is Turkey . As one of the most visited countries in the world, Turkey has a lot to offer visitors. From seaside resorts on the Mediterranean Sea, historical sites, welcoming people, rich culture, amazing museums and delicious Turkish dishes, a trip to this county will be quite memorable.

Whether you’re spending time in Istanbul, Capadoccia, or one of the other popular cities in Turkey, you’ll be able to try great food everywhere you turn. Each area has a spin on the dishes they serve, but look out for things like Doner Kebab, Meze, Pide, and Baklava.

20. Naples, Italy

Each region of Italy has its own unique list of specialty foods you must try, and Naples is no different. From the iconic Neopolitan pizza, to deep fried macaroni, to rum-soaked sponge cakes, you really must spend some time eating your way through Naples to fully discover the city and all its charms.

Be prepared. There are a LOT of great things to eat in this city.  If you’re looking for a way to experience the best Italian food in Naples, there’s really no better way to do it than to go on a food tour with Eating Europe . We spent a week venturing around the city to find the best pizza.

Our favorite pizza in the city was at Pizzeria Da Attilio, but there are memorable pizzas at 50 Kalo and Antico Borgo Ai Vergini . These are just a few of the top of their game. Other foods to try include Pizza Fritta, Cuoppo and Pasta Frittatine.

21. Catalunya, Spain

Nick & Laura in Girona, Spain

If you’ve been to  Spain , you already know that the entire country is vastly rich in culture, heritage, and especially  products and foods  that are specific to each micro region. Catalunya is one of those regions, and the amount of unique products, recipes and foods you can find there is astounding.

Catalunya has a very complex food culture. Not only does it have specific products that you don’t find in other parts of Spain, each of the smaller areas of Catalunya also have their own unique dishes that other areas of Catalunya don’t have. As a foodie in that area, you really will become immersed in a rich food culture. Even if you wanted to avoid it, you couldn’t. Food is so much a part of who they are.

While there, we discovered a plethora of products and foods you must try. You can visit wineries (there are many different wine regions – including Priorat and Emporda , plus they make Cava in Catalunya.)

With all of these great culinary destinations, you’ll never run out of food-centric vacations to take. We’ve been to each one of these and have loved them all. The variety of food around the world is just astounding.

Why not visit some of your favorites and find new dishes to love!

Nice list! I have been to a Lima, New Orleans, Tuscany, Switzerland, & Bordeaux and definitely agree! I turn every trip into a foodie destination, and while some places are better than others I have yet to be disappointed by the overall food anywhere. Right now I’m parked in South Korea and finding this food to be some of my favorite in the world!

Thanks for posting your thoughts, Katie. With so many awesome food destinations around the world, it’s hard to narrow it down, but I think most foodies would agree that these are some of the very best. I loved South Korea too. So much good food. I look forward to reading more about your adventures there.

Have you never been to Turkey?

oh my goodness! I have a lot of traveling and eating to do! I have been to Spain twice but not San Sebastián but love the food there! And Tuscany-so good! I went to a South African wine tasting recently so can’t wait to get there in person to drink the wine! And hardly a Better place in the US like NOLA!

Right? It’s hard to beat any of these places for good food. That’s what I love so much about traveling for food – there’s always more to discover!

Well I thought reading the article would help me choose a foodie destination for our 10th anniversary but now I’m famished and I can’t pick one location!!!so im going to ask as a foodie who’s travelled on a foodie vacation, where would you go?!? Ok let me rephrase that if you had to choose 1 place that’s amazing and you could visit again where would it be? Suggestions greatly appreciated!

I know, food overload! Where you go depends greatly on the type of food you like and whether you want to do mostly food things, or historical things too. If I had to pick one, is go with Bologna Italy. You can do so many different food activities there, plus extend down into Florence and Tuscany. My second choice would be Tokyo. If you like Japanese food, you will be in foodie heaven there.

Have you been to Bilbao, Spain?

Yes and we love the food in that region!

Hi, Great list. Thank you for your post. I have a passion for travel and food as well and I gained a lot of information from your post. It creates motivation for me a lot. I hope that in the near future, you will have other posts like this. Best regards

Glad you enjoyed it!

Absolutely! We’ll be sure to add those to the list in the future.

You are missing Ho Chi Minh City.

I’m a merchant mariner and I’ve traveled my whole adult life going all over the world trying good eats. I just came back from SE Asia and I’m pretty astounded that you would include Manila on this list. If there is a great Philippino dish to try it’s certainly the Sinigang not street squid (which I do love). However, the food game in PI isn’t on par with the rest of Asia. Have you been to Borneo? I’m in San Diego right now and I can honestly say that the food game here is better than half of these cities listed.

Part of the fun of traveling for food is to try these different cuisines and decide which ones you like the most. 🙂

Hi..I think you forgot India here ….I assume you never been to India.

We have, in fact, been to India and are headed back in January. This list can’t possibly be all inclusive. It’s just a taster of options for people looking to do culinary vacations. Thanks for adding India.

Missed Chengdu, China in the heart of Sichuan cuisine!

Worth a visit if you get a chance! The food, people and city are lovely!

Thanks Patrick!

Southern Italy (especially Naples and Sicily) is never mentioned in these rankings but it’s probably the best foodie region in Europe, easily topping Central and Northern Italy (Rome, Tuscany, Bologna, Venice and so on).

Thanks Christian. We visited Naples and Puglia this year and loved the food. It’s definitely a good addition to the list.

How to Plan a Food Trip

Close your eyes. Think about your favourite city or place to visit. Now, imagine a food you love passionately. I’m sure you smiled! That’s it, eating and travelling are things that really move us. Well, that is what Food Travel means. Is there a better thing than to combine these two passions in a culinary trip?

What is Food Travel

Food Travel means moving around with the aim of exploring a destination gastronomic offer . Exploring the pleasures of the table has always been associated with moments of leisure, but on a gastronomic trip, the culinary experience is no longer just a complement but the main motivation in choosing a destination and in the way of exploring it .

In general, it means travelling to do food tourism , which we define as follows:

Food tourism is composed of activities that provide experiences of consumption and appreciation of food and beverages, presented in such a way that value the history, the culture and the environment of a particular region. by Food’n Road

Why Food Travel?

What we want to highlight is that, in practice, when we combine travel with gastronomy, there is a whole set of experiences and learnings about the history, traditions, environment and local culture that go beyond taste. Realizing this is life-changing!

visit to the golden temple kitchen in Amritsar to make Indian food is also food travel

Food and Travel, an experience we never forget

On a trip, we want to have different experiences from our daily lives. These experiences become remarkable when you feel connected with them. That’s exactly how food plays its role.

The bond with food is a universal language, after all, no matter where you came from, food is certainly part of your history. That is why every travel memory always comes with a flavour .

meal in restaurant with traditional food in Cambodia is considered Food Travel as a culinary trip

The experience is for everyone

It is a mistake to think that this type of trip is only for those who like to (and can) eat in renowned restaurants, or visit expensive wineries. The food tourism industry is creative and aware of the interests of travellers.

Best of all, it is a democratic and flexible way of travelling. Nowadays, you can easily explore a gastronomic culture in different ways: in the countryside or in the city, individually or in groups, with luxury, with adventure. There is a broad range of options for all budgets and tastes.

We should not fail to mention that technology has also helped a lot of people who are looking for food experiences during a trip. Today, you can easily find online restaurant reviews, menu translation, independent guides, local dining platforms, and more.

For example, how about including a cooking class on your next trip? In addition to having fun while learning traditional dishes, you can cook these dishes when you return home, and remember the trip while sharing the experience with friends and family.

Want more ideas? Check out the list below with some examples of what to do on a culinary trip .

Activities in Food Tourism:

  • Take a street food tour;
  • Tasting of local dishes and beverages;
  • Follow regional product routes (e.g. travel on wine or coffee routes);
  • Eat at traditional restaurants;
  • Share meals with local people;
  • Participate in culinary events and festivals;
  • Visit local markets;
  • Learn about the production of food by visiting farms and artisan producers;
  • Participate in cooking classes;
  • Visit exhibitions that explain the history of local cuisine;
  • Culinary expeditions with chefs and specialists.

If you want to understand each of these activities in detail, we have written another article that explains the main activities of food tourism .

participate in a cooking class during a culinary trip is considered part of Food Travel

How to Food Travel

You can choose between an immersive food trip, where the entire itinerary is centred on the culinary experiences of the destination, or just include some food tourism activities to complement your itinerary .

But, regardless of your travel style, there is a secret to unlock the full potential of food tourism: Curiosity!

Try to understand not only what people eat, but why they eat in one way or another, what are the local ingredients, what is the story behind the food they prepare. Ask, interact, taste and smile.

How to Plan a Culinary Trip

You can plan a culinary trip independently or through agencies. And whatever your choice is, Food’n Road will help you .

To begin with, get inspired by our Food and Travel blog and explore food destinations with guides and content from each country.

After choosing the destination of your next trip, we suggest two paths :

If you want to plan your itinerary independently, visit our marketplace to find and book experiences , we handpick the best food tourism activities and tours from around the world .

Now, if you want a true gastronomic journey adapted to your taste, we suggest our Food Travel Design service to make a completely customized itinerary for you .

It makes a difference to go beyond the plate

On a culinary trip, you end up learning a lot about the local culture and the best, directly with the residents, exchanging information, trying new flavours and having fun.

During our travels, something that always strikes us is to notice the similarities between the cuisine of distant countries and how the same ingredients are used in such different ways.

For example, have you ever wondered how important the chilli pepper is for Asian cuisine even though it is a native ingredient from the Americas? With each trip, a new discovery!

driving to taste the sugar palm fruit during a culinary trip amid food travels

Food Travel is much more than travelling to eat

We can learn a lot on a trip like this, meet people with different realities from the ones we live in, see other lifestyles, and encourage the preservation of heritage and traditions .

By sharing the table with local people, listening to their stories and talking about typical dishes, you will feel part of the place and will appreciate aspects that were previously unknown.

On your next trip, try to learn about the destination by exploring the local cuisine and I am sure you will never forget this experience.

Count on Food’n Road to plan your next culinary journey and have a nice trip!

Real, authentic experiences

We love the highlights, but for us the real magic is found off the tourist trails. Our trips combine iconic sites with hidden gems that you’ll only discover with Intrepid. We’re talking mornings exploring the Taj Mahal, followed by a Mughlai cooking class with a passionate home cook.

A local Intrepid leader

Local expertise

Whether you’re perusing markets, hunting down the best street food bites or learning how to cook centuries-old family recipes at a homestay, there’s no better way to get the inside scoop on a destination – and its culinary traditions – than with an expert local leader by your side.

A small group of travellers

Small groups

Big coaches and flag-toting tour guides don’t cut it for us. With a maximum group size of 12, our groups blend in with the locals and have plenty of opportunities to interact with chefs, street food vendors and group leaders. It also means you can really connect with your fellow foodies.

Must-try dishes around the world

A plate of traditional Peruvian ceviche

Peru – ceviche

Ceviche is the unofficial national dish of Peru. It's made by marinating cubes of raw fish and seafood in lime juice, onions, salt and aji amarillo chilli peppers, and is served cold with sweet potato chunks, plantain chips and corn on the cob.

Paella simmering in a pan

Spain – paella

This saffron-flavored rice dish originated in Valencia hundreds of years ago when hungry servants would combine rice with leftovers from Moorish kings' lavish banquets. The dish varies across the regions, but the mixed version with chorizo, mussels and prawns is the most popular internationally.

A Kochi-style Thali in India

India – thali

Struggling to choose just one curry? Fear not. A thali comprises several eye-popping dishes served on a large plate. The dishes typically include grains, lentils, vegetables or meat curries, chutney, raita, pickles and pappadum – creating the perfect balance of sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy flavors.

A glass of wine with Balkan cheese and a cracker balanced on top

Balkans – cured meats and cheeses

When traveling through the Balkans, treat your tastebuds to delicious charcuterie boards loaded with traditionally preserved meats, cheeses, vegetables and bread. Some of the most popular Balkan meats to try include cevapi (homemade grilled sausage), njeguši (dry-cured ham) and pljeskavica (Balkan burger).

A street vendor selling falafel in Bethlehem, Isreal

Israel & Palestinian Territories – falafel

Considered to be Israel’s national dish, these balls of deliciousness (made with ground chickpeas, herbs and spices) are a must-try plant-based dish. They’re usually served on a platter or in a warm pita pocket filled with pickled vegetables, crunchy cabbage salad and generous lashings of creamy tahini sauce.

A colorful bowl of khao soi in Chiang Mai

Thailand – khao soi

There’s a whole world of Thai noodle dishes to discover beyond the obvious (and delicious!) pad thai. Khao soi is a chicken and coconut noodle soup from northern Thailand. It’s packed with vibrant aromatics and is served with crispy fried noodles, shallots and fresh lime wedges on top.

Tour reviews

Food tour faqs, what food can i expect.

Expect to eat the local way. We don't call these trips ‘food adventures’ for nothing. Forget Michelin stars and 20-course degustations – our local leaders will help you get behind the scenes of local food culture, track down the freshest street food, discover the most authentic local restaurants and reveal the traditions and techniques that make these destinations so deliciously mouth-watering. From lining up with locals for fresh tortillas in a Mexican market to hopping between Logrono’s thriving tapas bars, they’ll show you local food from the perspective of those who eat it every day.

How does a Food Adventure differ to a regular Intrepid trip?

All of our food trips have been designed with one thing in mind – experiencing the best local food on the planet. But we all know that there’s much more to food than just eating it – so whether it’s browsing markets for fresh produce, sizzling up a storm in a cooking class or meeting a local street-food legend, we’ve stuffed your plate to the brim. And once you’ve devoured all the local food you can handle, we’ve made sure our Food Adventures are rolled up into a burrito with the lot so you won’t miss out on the iconic sights and authentic cultural experiences that are found on all our Intrepid trips.

Is there any freedom & flexibility in the itineraries?

Like all Intrepid itineraries, we’ve made sure our food trips provide free time between activities, allowing you to digest a destination either with your group or on your own. You might spend the morning exploring a buzzing local market with your guide and cooking a delicious local dish with your group before heading off on your own to wander the marbled halls of a museum or cycling through ancient alleys.

We’ve also left plenty of mealtimes free of organized activities, which gives you the flexibility to ‘get your gourmet on’ at a fine dining restaurant or simply seek out your own ‘real food’ adventure. Needless to say, your leader will be there every step of the way with suggestions and recommendations.

What transport is used?

Sometimes, the best way to eat like a local is to travel like one too. That could mean jumping on a boat to discover the flavors of the Mekong Delta, riding the Tokyo subway to a sake bar or rattling along in a rickshaw in pursuit of Agra’s finest chaats. We love to use local transport because it gives us a chance to experience everyday local life from a new perspective.

What is the accommodation like?

Whether you’re spending the night in an ancient fortress or in the home of a local family, most of our trips include a memorable overnight stay that is designed to make your trip extra memorable. When we do choose to use hotels, all of our accommodation options are in our Original style, which means a mix of 2-3 star establishments that are safe, clean and comfortable.

How do Intrepid's Food Adventures benefit local communities?

We help support local economies by purchasing snacks and meals from street-side vendors, dining in local restaurants, eating seasonal produce from the destination, and using local guides throughout our itineraries. Many of our trips incorporate visits to community projects, and we choose locally-owned accommodation wherever possible. We are committed to a style of travel that is culturally, environmentally and socially responsible.

Why does every Food Adventure include a plant-based meal?

Plant-based foods generally have a much lower carbon footprint than animal-based foods, and incorporating more plant-based eating into our diet is a major opportunity to mitigate and adapt to climate change. As Intrepid continues to innovate in ways that promote and support sustainability, including a delicious meal that showcases local fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds is just one way that we are investing in the health of our planet.

What about vegan travelers?

We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements (including vegan diets) on all of our trips, and all our Real Food Adventures will include at least one plant-based meal. If you want a more tailored experience, that's where our Tailor-Made team can step in. We can use our 30 years of experience and regional specialists to help you create your perfect vegan food adventure.

Spend your days rolling in the waves, relaxing by the pool or enjoying quiet time (thanks to some superior kids' clubs) at these island resorts.

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya, Mexico

nickelodeon hotels resorts riviera maya, mexico

With massive waterparks, daily slimings and Nickelodeon characters galore, the kids have it made at the all-inclusive Nickelodeon Hotels & Resort Riviera Maya, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award Winner. But grown-ups aren’t left out of the fun. Tequila tastings, spa treatments and romantic dinners can be on your agenda thanks to the supervised club for kids ages 4 to 12. And while you probably wouldn’t be booking a SpongeBob-themed room if you didn’t have the kids in tow, the decor is as mod and classy as it can be. All the accommodations are suites that sleep up to five and have two bathrooms. Suites have direct access to a pool from the balcony. (Yes, even on the top floor!)

Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas

Winner of a 2024 Family Travel Award, Atlantis is a top choice for families of all ages looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure. Its adrenaline-pumping waterpark features high-speed slides, including a one-of-a-kind tube slide down a Mayan pyramid. Animal encounters, like getting up close to a dolphin, are thrilling in a different way. But on the other side of the massive resort, the beaches are super chill. The gentle water is just perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Supervised clubs for kids, tweens and teens truly wow, so adults can enjoy the casino and a meal at one of the resort's fine-dining restaurants.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, Dominican Republic

Movies under the stars, trapeze lessons, windsurfing — with cool activities like these, kids will never want to leave this newish resort in the lush, away-from-it-all part of the island. Supervised clubs for babies through teens keep the good times rolling while you’re at the adults-only Zen pool or doing treetop yoga. (Yes, that’s a thing.) Solar panels, recycling, plastic-free water bottles and other sustainable initiatives are part of the eco-minded resort culture.

Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, Negril, Jamaica

a sparsely attended white sand beach at beaches negril, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

While this all-inclusive resort and 2024 Family Travel Award-winner caters to all ages, toddlers and preschoolers will be star-struck. Sesame Street characters entertain them with story times, dance parties and even puppet-making! That’s on top of the mini water slides, splash areas and a playground that makes little ones squeal with glee and wears them out, so they’ll hit the sack early.

Private childcare and supervised kids’ clubs (for babies through teens, including those with special needs) are an option when you want a spa treatment, a quiet dinner or just to read a book on the resort's idyllic 7-Mile Beach. All the rooms and suites got a glow-up in 2020, plus there are new villas with butler service (sign us up!)

Fairmont Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

When it comes to baby and kid gear, this luxury resort has you covered. Need a bottle warmer? They got it. How about a step stool for a toddler to reach the sink? Yours for the asking. With these worries aside, you can concentrate on the beauty of the surroundings (the resort is surrounded by a lush mangrove forest) and incredible bucket-list activities, like kids’ carnivals and night kayaking. All the rooms have received a glow-up and there's a sleek new beach club to boot.

Rock House Resort, Turks & Caicos

the infinity pool at the rock house resort, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Your family may never leave the water at this Mediterranean-inspired oasis , which opened in May 2022. In addition to a full kitchen and roomy living room, many of the villa-style accommodations feature a spacious private pool. (Yes way!) And if your crew ever tires of it, fun awaits at the resort’s oceanfront infinity pool and stretch of white sand beach, which is exclusively for resort guests. Just note that while a cliffside setting makes the resort incredibly picturesque, it’s impossible to navigate with a stroller — so bring the tweens, teens and even grandparents if they don’t have trouble climbing stairs.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Aruba Resort

embassy suites by hilton aruba resort

A brand that's popular with families because it offers separate sleeping spaces for kids and adults, Embassy Suites recently opened a location in Aruba. (Pinch us now.) The 330-suite hotel boasts a kids' pool and playground and is just steps away from the iconic Eagle Beach. A breakfast buffet (with made-to-order items) is included in the price, which is already a value. Rooms also feature a kitchenette, so you can stash drinks and snacks and save your budget for the island's many incredible water activities.

New England Cozy

Lakes, lighthouses and hiking trails make New England a great place to visit in almost any season.

Quisisana Resort, Lovell, ME

two friends frolic in a lake at the quisisana resort, a good housekeeping pick for family vacation destinations

Kids will get a digital detox at this all-inclusive lakefront resort , but they’ll be too busy playing to miss their devices. Without TV or a Wi-Fi signal in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and cabins, they’ll be fully immersed in the slew of included activities — from paddle boating to tennis to sandcastle-building. They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.

At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.

The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.

Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport, ME

campfire at hidden pond in maine, good housekeeping's pick for best family vacation destinations

Open from May to October, this nature-focused retreat provides a refuge from city life. Yoga sessions in the garden, a shed filled with arts and crafts supplies for kids, guided nature walks and outdoor art classes are easy-going yet exciting at the same time. Cottages with fireplaces foster togetherness, and complimentary breakfast arrives at your door every morning so there's no need to rush out for coffee.

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT

a family goes biking through green hills at smuggler's notch, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Nestled in the Green Mountains, this resort is just as fun in the summer months as it is during prime ski season. Besides eight heated pools (some with waterslides!), the action-packed lineup of family activities has plenty to do whether you’re traveling with a toddler, teen or both. Sing-a-longs, magic shows and scavenger hunts keep little ones entertained while older kids will welcome the chance to take a guided hike, design and launch a water rocket or play glow-in-the-dark volleyball. A GH 2024 Family Travel Awards winner, condos at this property accommodate up to five bedrooms, making it possible for extended family and friends to stay together.

Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club, Brewster, MA

the boardwalk to the beach bar at the ocean's edge resort golf club, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Beach, pool, eat, repeat — that’s how your crew will spend laid-back days at this Cape Cod gem . The private beach has gentle surf and at low tide, kids can spy little sea creatures in the tide pools. When the tide changes, head to the heated outdoor or indoor pools. Outdoor movies are the perfect wind-down to bedtime. And if you can pry the kids out of the water, activities like scavenger hunts, curated by the resort’s new director of fun (for real!) await. Just make sure to stay in the “mansion” section of the resort because that’s the part with private beach access.

Sebasco Harbor Resort, Phippsburg, ME

the kids' club at the sebasco harbor resort, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

Kids will never forget sleeping in a lighthouse next to the ocean. The resort’s 1945 lighthouse contains recently renovated guest rooms with amazing views, sea breezes and conveniences like a fridge and microwave. The lighthouse rooms are also near the resort’s iconic oceanfront saltwater pool, which recently got a makeover. A vintage bowling alley, weekly pirate cruise and old-school kids’ club add to the New England charm.

Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge, Stowe, VT

bluebird cady hill lodge

A fantastic value, this new '70s-inspired cozy lodge is perfect for families who want to explore Vermont's Green Mountains. The scenic trails of Cady Hill Forest are just steps away and downtown Stowe is about a 10-minute walk. Two- and three-bedroom cottages at Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge have plenty of space for families and a kitchen to boot. A game room, fire pits for s'mores roasting and a pool make hanging at the lodge a nice respite in between nature activities.

California Dreamin'

Choose your Cali adventure: You can find bustling cityscapes, tranquil trails, stunning beaches and even a fairytale castle.

Los Angeles, CA

morning scenery of griffith observatory and downtown la los angeles is good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Tweens and teens won’t roll their eyes if you suggest a vacay in L.A. — where, trust us, they’ll ask you to eat at In-N-Out-Burger (look cool and say you already had it on the list). Some more must-dos: Visit the Griffith Observatory for the out-of-this-world exhibits and a stellar view of the Hollywood sign, and if you're an outdoorsy family you can hike down from the observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and famous TCL Chinese Theaters .

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Some outdoor shopping at The Grove L.A. and a beach day in Santa Monica with a spin on the iconic wheel at the Santa Monica Pier will get you more well-deserved parent cred. Or, you can take a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood , where, for now, you can find the only Super Nintendo World open in the United States. Stay at The Garland in North Hollywood, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Awards winner. It has a swanky trolley that transports guests to and from Universal, as well as other kid perks like dive-in movies and a retro-chic family suite with bunk beds.

San Diego, CA

Can’t decide between heading to the beach or exploring a big city? San Diego has the best of both worlds, with near-perfect weather to boot. Make your home base a beach resort like the Kona Kai San Diego Resort & Spa , San Diego Mission Bay Resort or, if you're bringing a big group, Shore House at Del, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner. Intersperse oceanside fun with short drives to the city’s famous zoo and museums in Balboa Park. Plan to spend at least a half day at Liberty Station , a cultural attraction that has many places to eat and shop. New stores and restaurants are open at Seaport Village , which has a classic carousel for kids to ride.

Monterey, CA

guests wearing face coverings and enjoying the kelp forest exhibit at the monterey bay aquarium monterey is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

The number one reason to book a vacation in this coastal town: the aquarium. Yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is that good. It levels up the typical touch tank experience by letting little kids crawl through tunnels surrounded by tropical fish displays and use squirt toys to learn how animals stand up to big waves. There’s even a padded zone with eye-level exhibits for toddlers! And the whole family will be wowed by the aquarium’s newish exhibition, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean." Some of the creatures in the 21 live exhibit areas are newly discovered and haven’t even been named yet. Mind blown! Stay at the hotel next door, InterContinental The Clement Monterey .

Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA

the ferris wheel at disneyland california adventure disneyland is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.

Soda company will pay close duo to take a road trip next month

up food trip

One pair of besties will get paid to take the road trip of a lifetime this April.

OLIPOP , the healthy soda brand, are “looking for the ultimate dynamic duo” to join them on the road next month.

The “dream job” will pay two best friends $10,000 to “sip OLIPOP, explore four iconic cities, create content + memories, and spread the joy of soda across the country as “senior soda consultants.”

OLIPOP says the gig is all about “celebrating iconic American cities & hyping up your bestie along the way.”

Soda enthusiasts, who are ready to get out the word about OLIPOP’s “deliciously refreshing tonic, crafted with botanicals, natural plant fiber, and prebiotics” that supports “your microbiome” and benefits “digestive health,” according to the company’s website, must have the online application submitted by Friday, March 22.

Here’s what we know about the dream gig, including how to apply.

How will OLIPOP compensate the besties selected?

OLIPOP will offer the pair of besties a total of $10,000, offering each bestie $5,000 for the job. They will also cover the cost of hotel, airfare and per diem.

Another perk listed online was the opportunity to create “unforgettable memories and a chance to become the face of OLIPOP's nationwide adventure.”

What does a ‘senior soda consultant’ do?

The besties that are picked to work with OLIPOP will be tasked with a few “key responsibilities,” including creating content to share on social, telling locals about OLIPOP and hyping up your bestie online and on the road trip.

OLIPOP’s tour is set to kick off the first week of April, with more specific details to be announced at a later date. The besties will visit the first city on the tour, which has yet to be revealed, from April 5 through April 10.

Here are a few more specifics courtesy of OLIPOP:

  • Be the Ultimate Hype Friend: Amplify the energy in each city with your infectious enthusiasm and friendship, hyping each other up and the local city culture in any situation.
  • Soda Enthusiasts: Spread OLIPOP’s joy of soda by sharing your experiences with locals and also spreading awareness about the unique qualities of OLIPOP.
  • Storytelling POP-Stars: Showcase your talent in content creation by capturing the essence of OLIPOP's journey in each city. Create memorable moments everywhere you go while educating others about the features that make OLIPOP a delicious choice.

How do I apply for OLIPOP’s dream gig?

All you need to do to become a Senior Soda Consultant for OLIPOP needs to fill out an online application.

Once there, you will be asked to provide your contact information, social media handle, video samples and resume. (The resume you upload is for you and your bestie.)

“This [video samples] could be anything from sharing their content consuming OLIPOP while cheering a loved one on from the stands, studying together for a test, or while playing a neck-and-neck game of chess,” OLIPOP’s website states.

You can also show OLIPOP how you and your bestie hype each other up on social media, tagging @drinkolipop with the hashtag #OLIDreamJob.

Are there any requirements?

There are a couple.

Applicants must be a U.S. resident, over the age of 18, have a passion for content creation and storytelling, demonstrated experience in content creation, comfortable navigating social media platforms, able to travel to various cities on specific dates as part of OLIPOP’s tour.

Above all, they are looking for besties that have “charismatic personalities that will resonate with soda lovers and adventure seekers.”

Strong teamwork skills will only enhance the experience, OLIPOP says.

Providence Journal

Food, history and beaches. Yankee Magazine named these RI towns among best places to live

Yankee Magazine named two Rhode Island towns among the best to live in New England.

For their 2024 Best Places to Live in New England, the editor and writers at Yankee took a look around the region to pick out their favorite places to live. To account for different tastes, instead of making a simple numerical ranking, they broke the list into categories such as best for adventure, best up-and-coming food town and best coastal town.

In each category, the magazine names a top, a worthy alternative and an affordable option.

Here’s where Rhode Island towns ranked.

Best Up and Coming Food Town: Warren, RI

An excerpt of what they said: “ The food ecosystem of Warren is so rich and varied that to call it “up-and-coming” may seem unfair, but in truth its delights are little known beyond Rhode Island.” They recommended eating at Rod’s Grille, Amaral’s Fish and Chips, Delekta Pharmacy, Wedge, Prica Farina, Sowams Cider Works Company, The Guild, Coffee Depot and Bywater.

What else to know: Yankee didn’t mention it, but we feel obligated to point out that Bywater, 54 State St., was recently nominated for the Outstanding Restaurant James Beard Award. If you’re looking for some other dining options, readers love the lobster roll at Blount Clam Shack, 335 Water St., and the burgers at Chomp Kitchen and Drinks , 279 Water St.

For more dining recommendations, our food editor Gail Ciampa put together a guide to eating in Warren that won’t steer you wrong.

Best Historic Architecture Town: Wickford, RI

An excerpt of what they said: “Recently named one of America’s 10 best historic small towns in a USA Today poll, Wickford has one of the densest collections of 18th-century houses in New England. It makes sense that 'people whose hobby and love is restoring houses' are drawn here, says one longtime resident.”

What else to know: In 2022, USA Today, the Providence Journal’s parent paper, did name Wickford the best historic town in the country. Historic locations like Smith Castle, built in 1678, are part of the draw to the area, but in terms of living there, part of the appeal is that it almost has the feel of the fictional town Stars Hollow in "Gilmore Girls," with a sweet downtown, a line up of community events that includes everything from the Wickford Art Festival in the summer to the Witches Paddle in the fall to the annual holiday window decorating contest during the holidays.

Worthy Alternative for Coastal Town: Westerly, RI

An excerpt of what they said : “Miles of powdery beaches. A historic downtown and its green centerpiece, Wilcox Park. Star chef Jeanie Roland’s Ella’s Food & Drink. Grey Sail Brewing. All this creates a small-town feel wrapped in coastal beauty that has attracted the likes of Taylor Swift.”

What else to know: While Marblehead, Massachusetts, was selected as the best coastal town, Westerly has plenty going for it, especially if you like beaches. Misquamicut State Beach, which offers a half-mile of beachfront, is the most popular state beach in Rhode Island, which is saying something in a state nicknamed the Ocean State. For those who like walking on the beach, Napatree Point is not to be missed.

Food Network superstar Guy Fieri makes second trip to North Palm Beach pizzeria

up food trip

Can't get enough of the good stuff!

It would seem that the pizza at Venezia Italian Pizza and Ristorante in North Palm Beach has made an impression on Food Network superstar and part-time Palm Beach County resident Guy Fieri .

Stopping by on Tuesday, Feb. 27 and even doing a short video with Venezia chef Albert, this was Guy Fieri's second trip to the much-loved restaurant .

Chef Albert said this time Fieri was with four friends and he made them one of their signature pizzas, the white pizza, which features ricotta and mozzarella cheese with garlic, oregano and extra virgin olive oil, and one cheese pizza.

Though it was his second time meeting Fieri, he laughed and said he was nervous before adding that Fieri was an "old fashion, very normal guy."

Fieri stopped by back in December for a couple slices of pizza with his oldest son Hunter after they had been shopping at a nearby business.

At the time, Vogli joked that at first he didn't recognize Fieri and it wasn't until one of the waitresses said "That's Guy Fieri" that he realized who it was.

More: Celebrity chef Guy Fieri puts Lake Worth Beach home up for sale for $8.5 million

He laughed and said that when Fieri first looked up at him "I thought he was looking for Parmigiano."

This time around Fieri shot a quick video singing chef Albert's praises saying "he makes his dough, he makes his sauce, he makes everything from scratch" and even adding "this guy's the real deal."

The family-owned and operated Venezia has been in business since 1987.
