The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) currently has varied costs depending upon which stream you apply for. The processing times can vary depending upon the stream you apply for the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

WHAT THIS VISA LETS YOU DO

The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) allows you to temporarily stay in Australia for tourist, visit or other business purposes for up to between 3, 6 and up to 12 months. What you are able to do is dependent upon what stream you apply for. For more information, scroll down below.

TOURIST STREAM (APPLY FROM AUSTRALIA)

WHAT THIS STREAM LETS YOU DO

The cost of the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) - Tourist Stream (Apply from Australia) is currently $365AUD and you can stay for up to 12 months. Most processing times are within 26 days. With this visa you can:

visit family or friends

be here as a tourist, for a cruise or for any purpose except business or medical treatment

You can study or train for up to 3 months in total on this visa. But if your main reason for travelling to Australia is study, a student visa might be more appropriate.

You cannot work.

You will need a visa if you enter Australia during a cruise. If your cruise is a round trip cruise, the time you spend on the cruise counts as time spent in Australia - that is, we do not consider you have left Australia. A round trip cruise will not reset your stay period on your visa. Ask your cruise operator or travel agent if we consider your cruise to be a round trip cruise.

Which stream should I apply to?

There are 5 different streams for visitor visas:

Tourist stream

For the tourist stream, you can apply inside or outside Australia. However, if you are in Australia and you would like to lodge a visitor visa application, you must not have the dreaded ”  8503 No Further Stay  ” condition attached to your visa grant. Recently processing time is 3 months give or take 1 month.

Sponsored family stream

If you have a relative who is at least 18 years old and he or she is an Australian permanent resident or citizen, then you might be able to apply for a visitor visa under the sponsored family stream. Normal processing time for a family-sponsored visitor visa is 4 months plus or take 1 month.

Business visitor stream

This stream will suit you if you are currently outside Australia, and you plan to visit Australia for business purposes for a short time for business meetings but not actually to “work” in Australia. The normal processing time for this stream is typically shorter than the others. You will be required to provide evidence of your trip, this may include but is not limited to:

  • an invitation from a host organisation
  • conference registration details
  • a letter from your employer stating why you are visiting
  • your plans for your stay and details of your Australian business contacts

Frequent traveller stream

How do I apply for a tourist visa to Australia?

Visitor visas can be applied for online through an online portal called the  Immi Account  without any assistance and in most cases, you do not need the assistance of a  migration lawyer   like me .

You should understand that a visitor visa can be applied for in most cases outside of Australia (offshore) but also in limited cases when you are already inside Australia (onshore).

For a discussion about making an application for a visitor visa to enter Australia or for making a further visitor visa application or visitor visa extension whilst onshore, please  book a chat  with me to discuss your options.

How much money do you need in the bank?

To apply for a visitor visa, you need to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be a  genuine temporary entrant
  • Have adequate means of support
  • Meet the Australia  Public Interest Criteria
  • Meet special return criteria

There is no specific amount of money that is required when you apply for a visitor visa. The case officer may seek evidence including, but not limited to:

  • bank statements and/or passbooks showing a consistent history of saving
  • letters from banks and/or other financial institutions concerning the financial position of the applicant or the applicant’s access to the funds of another person
  • air tickets that have already been purchased
  • available credit card funds.

Please note, cash and traveller’s cheques are not considered acceptable evidence of funds. You’ll need to prove that you “own” such funds. That’s awkward!

If you are invited by a family or friend, and they will cover the expenses for your stay, generally the person offering the support should confirm their offer, in writing.

You can  book a consultation with me to discuss how I can help you put a better visitor visa submission.

Your Experience?

Please share your comments with me.

I’d love to know more  about your experience with applying for this visa subclass!

Thank you very much for your question. Here are the first three (3) things that come to my mind in relation to your post. There may also be other important issues which arise from your particular circumstances and you should seek specific immigration law advice before taking any further steps. It could be that I misunderstood you.

1. To access the current processing times for a given visa type visit this site https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-processing-times/global-visa-processing-times . Remember it keeps changing.

2. Check that you have uploaded necessary supporting material.

3. I wonder whether you have travelled previously to Australia on a visitor Visa. Make sure that your expectation level is appropriate and that you have clearly demonstrated that you will return after your period of stay in Australia.

Hi we have applied for a visitor visa 600 for my son’s Filipino girlfriend. We did apply while we were on holiday in the Philippines and we also git the Biometric scan done in Manila. I’ve also attached a letter stating that my son’s girlfriend will be staying with us and she will also have travel insurance. I am just wondering about the wait time? Is it because she is from the Philippines that the application takes much longer??? Also when the visa is approved and maybe only 3 month’s at a time? Would she need to leave the country and come back to get another 3 month’s? Or can we apply for extension?

August 15, 2022 at 11:50 am

Hi, I have applied for my mother’s tourist visa – 600 from Fiji. Last updated on 08/07. All the documents uploaded, biometrics & medical completed as well in May/July. Immi account is still showing further assessment. How long does it take usually? Or is there anything I can do about it?

She has been to Australia few times in the past. However, during her last stay, she over stayed 1 day as I completely forgot to reapply. We hired the migration lawyer who applied for the visa (on-shore) and got approved for 3 months. She went back to Fiji and reapplied in June’22 and since then no update.

Please assist. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Nilesh I submitted a visitor visa for my mum to visit. I put in the application on the 27th of June, had the biometrics and health checks done in her home country and I acknowledged that we had provided all the information sought after she went for both the biometrics and health checks. But all it says on the the application home page is further assessment and it still displays the “arrange biometrics collection”. It approaching the maximum processing time frame of 37 days and we not heard anything back from them. Is this normal, for them to take such a long time to process visitor visas. She was granted one pre covid once we submitted all the requested documents. I am not sure what we can do at this stage. She can’t travel alone and we had hoped that she will get the visa in time to travel with my sister who has gotten her visa and will be travelling down on the 26th. Any advise is appreciated.

August 7, 2022 at 8:19 pm

Please contact me if you are still waiting for a response after a few days of having provided the additional material. Unfortunately it can be that your case has been handed to another person or added to another persons work queue And delays of several months are not uncommon.

I know this must be frustrating for you. Once you get it is not uncommon.

Hi, I have a small concern. I applied for a tourist visa as a friend back in March 2022 from UAE. However, I had done biometrics and health examinations. The health examinations have been cleared, but there is still a flag indicating “arrange biometrics collection”, with the overall status as “Further assessment” When we contacted the Department of Home Affairs, they informed us that there has been a technical issue. But this issue has been going on for a few months. We are in two minds if we should reapply the application again. Is there something we can do re-submit the biometrics? They have now increased the global processing time for 90% of the applications to 20 months.

HI Nilesh Nandan,

You are doing a great job.

Can I ask one question? Can we apply for a Partner visa while the partner is in Australia on a Visit visa SC 600?

Does she get a bridging visa?

May 9, 2022 at 12:08 pm

1. yes. 2. yes.

I’m assuming that there is no condition on the Visa which suggests “No further stay”. If such a condition does attach to the Visitor Visa held in an application will need to be made for a waiver of that prohibition.

I can help with making submissions in respect of the waiver in certain circumstances.

Hope this helps. Please help me answer more questions like these by leaving an honest review here: https://g.page/r/CfBw8UcKreaaEAg/review

I would like to know, Does DUI conviction (First Offence , NZD $800 fine only in New Zealand) prevent to obtain Visitor visa to Australia? with Nepalese Passport? & as I am Nepalese passport holder, am I eligible to apply (Fast-Track processing)? I opt your team to apply my visa Asap.

May 5, 2022 at 10:22 am

Certainly would be easier if you did not have any drink driving charge at all. I do not believe the charge is photo of particularly in circumstances where it was only a fine. I am more concerned about the fact that you are the holder of a Nepali passport and whether or not you will meet the requirements to be a genuine temporary entrant. This involves looking at the factors pulling you back to Nepal after your temporary stay on the one hand and potential motivation for you to stay in Australia and overstay your Visa on the other hand. Your employment and social ties could particularly impact this as well your immigration history not just with Australia but with other countries.

August 29, 2021 at 2:10 pm

If you’re asking whether or not immigration has ceased processing applications for visitor visas to enter Australia, I’m not aware of any cessation in processing.

The difficulty of course is in obtaining a travel exemption in respect of crossing Australian borders even if a visitor visa is held.

Informative article so I thought I would share my experience with subclass 600 visa. I am a NZer who was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment in 2005. My application for a visitor visa has been sitting under further assessment for the past 3 months they have not asked for any further information nor have they notified if it has been sent to the character assessment (VACCU). I have had two previous such visas granted; the first one took 9 months for a decision to be made and was granted for 1 years. The 2nd was a 2year visa that took just 2 weeks to process after application. I am at a loss at the current delay as my circumstances are unchained e.g. no further convictions, same employer/residence for past 10 years

May 29, 2021 at 6:11 am

I don’t know why the delay this time.

The discretion applied by a decision maker is unique to that decision maker.

Reasonable minds may differ on each exercise of the discretion.

Additionally, guidelines and policies may change from time to time. This may require a different consideration or a different weighting to be given to the the nature and seriousness of the particular offending or the present likelihood of re-offending.

In short, unfortunately, just because you were granted previously, it does not necessarily follow that you’ll be granted again.

Does that help?

Thanks for the insights.I also have a query, I applied for a Visitor visa (family visit) 600 ( paid AUD 145)a month back on 26th April 2022. Since, my brother is on a PR, I thought this would be the fastest visa to get. However, till date status on immi showing only application received. What could be the reasons, was it better to apply for Tourist visa instead & can I do anything further to expedite the visa processing. I was planning to travel in June 1st week. I am seriously not sure what went wrong.

How Do I Apply For A Visitor Visa 600 Extension To Stay In Australia?

Every year, thousands of people visit Australia for different purposes like tourism, business, or visiting family or friends. If you are one of them and not a citizen of New Zealand, you must obtain your Visitor Visa 600 to be eligible to enter this country. The Visa 600 is a temporary visa, and holders have to leave Australia once it expires. Though the usual validity of this visa is 3 months, business visitors can have the maximum validity of 12 months, in which they need to leave Australia after every 3 months.

However, emergencies may arise when a visitor finds it impossible to leave the country because of sudden restrictions (as happened in the case of the still-going COVID-19 pandemic). The only option left is applying for a 600 visa extension in those situations. This blog discusses all the essential details one must know regarding this extension.

Latest News: Australia Is All Set To Reopen Its Borders

What Should You Know About Visitor Visa 600 Australia?

Before discussing the extension process, some basic facts are discussed regarding the Visitor Visa 600.

  • Holders of this visa are generally allowed to stay in Australia for 3 months. However, people coming for business purposes can have a maximum period of 12 months.
  • There are five streams under this visa – Tourist Stream (for visiting purpose only; both offshore and onshore application options available), Sponsored Family Stream (for visitors sponsored by a family member who is an Australian PR or citizen), Business Visitor Stream (for business people), Approved Destination Stream, and Frequent Traveller Stream (the last two are for Hong Kong passport-holders).
  • Like other Australian visas, you have to meet the basic eligibility criteria and fill out the application form for your Visa 600.
  • If you have previously held an Australian visa, you have to show that you have complied with all its conditions.
  • Other important eligibility criteria include having the adequate financial capacity to cover all the costs during your stay in Australia, holding the required health and character certifications and a health insurance coverage, valid for 12 months.
  • The Australian Subclass 600 Visa is different from the other visas in terms of one key benefit. While most other visas allow applicants to include their family members in the application, the 600 Visa does not. If you want to visit this beautiful country with your loved ones, they must lodge separate applications.

How to Apply For A Visitor Visa 600 Extension?

The stay extension you require in Australia on your 600 Visa may be for a period more than what is allowed. If such a situation arises, you must apply for a Visitor Visa 600 extension or extension for any other Australia visa. If you go for the second option, you can apply for visas like:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage Visa Subclass 482
  • Employer Nomination Scheme Subclass 186
  • Student Visa Subclass 500

One thing to keep in mind is that your 600 Visa extension or another visa application will take several weeks or months to get processed. So, make sure you start planning early.

As a potential applicant, you must also remember that whether you will get your next visa will depend on your purpose for the extended stay and eligibility criteria.

Procedures for Obtaining a 600 Visa Extension

Complete the following steps to make your 600 Visa extension application.

1. Decide how long you will stay in Australia

As we have stated, international visitors can stay for up to 3 months in Australia with their visitor visa. So, first, you have to decide how long you will stay here because it will impact your visa options. If you want to stay for more than 12 months, you will be required to apply for a visa extension.

2. Check how much your current visitor visa is valid for

Once your period of stay in Australia is decided, you must now check how much time you are left with. Migration experts typically advise making the application quite early for the extension. Make sure you have at least 3 weeks in your hand.

3. Choose the most suitable visa option

This is one of the most important points to keep in mind, especially if you want to apply for a completely new visa type for the period of extension. Make sure you have made your choice based on your situation. Otherwise, you may have to regret it later.

If you do not have enough funds, it will not be a good idea to go for a visitor visa extension simply because, as per Australian Immigration laws, tourist visa holders cannot find any job for an Australian company.

On the other hand, if your partner or a parent is an Australian permanent resident or citizen, choosing a student visa or work visa will be the best option.

4. Decide on your visa according to your situation

You should make your visa extension choice according to your situation. You may qualify for multiple visa options. Compared to partner visas, work and holiday visas involve fewer restrictions.

If money is not an issue for you, you can apply for the Tourist Visa 600 extension because it will be the simplest and cheapest option.

5. Check if there is any ‘no further stay’ condition attached to your current visitor visa

This is another important check you must carry out before applying for a visa extension. From the term, you can easily understand that this condition will not let you stay in Australia any further after your visa expires. However, this condition is usually imposed on cases like:

  • You coming from a country that the Australian Immigration considers as ineligible to allow a further stay.
  • Record of not remaining compliant with conditions attached to any previous Australian visa.

If this condition is imposed on your visa and you want to waive it due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, you must provide a written request to the authority.

6. Gather all the necessary documents

Once you find no ‘no further stay’ condition on your Tourist Visa 600, you can now gather the necessary documents. Remember that you must submit the same documents you have provided at the time of the first application.

7. Go through a necessary medical examination

Once all the documents are gathered, you can take scanned copies of them to upload while making an online application. To make sure you have good health, you must undertake a medical check within 28 days of the application.

8. Wait for your visa outcome

As the entire procedure takes a significant period, you have to wait for some weeks to get your visa approved. If your current visa expires during this period, Australian Immigration will grant you a bridging visa.

How can I transition from tourist visa to partner visa in Australia?

  • July 11, 2023

Have you ever thought about making Australia your permanent home? Imagine embarking on a lifelong journey with your loved one and becoming a part of this diverse and vibrant country. Just like any exciting journey, you may encounter challenges along the way. But with proper planning and adherence to the necessary steps, you can ensure a smooth transition.

The application for a partner visa is a two-step process whereby you will initially obtain a temporary visa. Following that, you will be able to apply for a permanent partner visa which grants you the right to live in Australia. However, the visa system can be challenging to navigate, and it is crucial to understand the process to ensure a smooth transition and compliance with Australian immigration regulations. Let us first get insight into visa types and learn the steps to transition from tourist to partner in Australia without any hassle.

Table of Contents

Understanding the Visa Options

Tourist visa (subclass 600).

The tourist visa allows individuals to visit Australia for tourism or to engage in business activities for a temporary period. It is essential to note that a tourist visa does not grant the right to work or study in Australia. The duration of stay can vary, with options for a short stay or a more extended period based on the specific visa stream chosen.

Partner Visa (Onshore and Offshore)

The partner visa in Australia enables the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia. There are two main categories for partner visas:

  • Onshore Partner Visa : If you are already in Australia on a valid visa, such as a tourist visa, you may be eligible to apply for an onshore partner visa (Subclass 820/801) . This visa allows you to stay in Australia temporarily while the Department of Home Affairs processes your application for a permanent partner visa.
  • Offshore Partner Visa : If you are outside Australia when you apply for a partner visa, you will fall under the offshore partner visa category (Subclass 309/100) . This visa allows you to enter Australia and live with your partner on a temporary basis before being granted a permanent residency visa.

The Process: From Tourist Visa to Partner Visa

Eligibility assessment.

Before you begin the application process, it is important to figure out whether you are eligible for a partner visa. Australian immigration has strict requirements to ensure the authenticity of relationships. To qualify, you need to satisfy the following conditions:

  • You and your Australian partner must be 18 years or older.
  • You must have met your partner in person and have a genuine and ongoing relationship.
  • You must be able to prove that you are in a committed and exclusive relationship with your de facto partner.
  • Your partner must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident of Australia, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • You must be able to provide evidence that you intend to live together with your partner in Australia.
  • You must not have any Australian visa refusal or cancellation.

Transitioning  through Onshore or Offshore

If you satisfy the criteria for a partner visa, you have the option to apply for the visa either onshore or offshore. To apply for a subclass 820 visa application, you need to get a bridging visa to submit your application while still being in Australia. A bridging visa allows you to stay lawfully in Australia while your partner visa application is being processed. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that you have a valid visa to remain in Australia until your partner visa application is evaluated, as the bridging visa only becomes effective once your current visa expires.

If your tourist visa expires and you do not have a bridging visa, applying subclass 309 visa is still a possibility. However, you will need to exit the country prior to the end of your visitor visa and submit your application from outside of Australia. It is important to note that applying for an offshore partner visa can prove to be more challenging than an onshore partner visa, as you must fulfil the requirements for the visa while outside the country.

Gathering Required Documents

Applying for a partner/spouse visa can be a lengthy and paperwork-intensive process. It is essential to ensure that all documents are precise, comprehensive, and meet the specified criteria. To streamline the application procedure, it is vital to gather all required paperwork in advance, which includes:

  • Proof of identity : This can include a passport,   birth certificate , or other government-issued identification.
  • Proof of your relationship: This can include photos, emails, messages and other evidence that demonstrates the authenticity of your relationship.
  • Proof that you have lived together: This can include   lease agreements ,   joint bills and other documentation that shows you have shared a residence.
  • Proof of financial support: This can include   bank statements , tax returns and other evidence that shows your sponsor can provide financial support.
  • Proof of health and character: This can include medical exams, police certificates and other documentation that shows you meet the health and character requirements for the visa.

Meeting Financial and Sponsorship Obligations

When applying for a partner visa in Australia, your sponsor must provide proof of adequate financial support for you. They must meet income thresholds or show the ability to offer substantial financial assistance. They will be responsible for two years of financial help starting from the date they receive their visa.

Additionally, sponsors have specific obligations and responsibilities, including assisting the visa applicant and providing the necessary support during their stay. You need to note that failure to meet your sponsorship obligations can have bad consequences, including cancellation of your partner visa and possible legal action.

Lodging a Partner Visa Application

Lodge your partner visa application through the immiaccount, an online portal provided by the Department of Home Affairs. To complete your application, as per DHA , you must pay the mandatory fee of AUD8,850.00, which applies to most applicants. If you hold a subclass 300 Prospective Marriage visa, the fee is reduced to AUD1,475. Additionally, you must submit all the necessary supporting documents.  It is important to double-check that you have provided all the required information to avoid any delays or complications in the application process.

It is important to note that if your partner visa application is refused, you may be able to lodge an appeal with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal ( AAT ). The AAT can review the decision and may overturn it if it determines that the decision was incorrect or unfair.

Processing and Waiting Period

Your application will undergo thorough processing by the Department of Home Affairs, which involves conducting necessary checks and assessing your eligibility. You will be granted a Bridging visa A (BVA) once you submit the application, as the processing time may vary depending on various factors, individual circumstances and the visa subclass you are applying for. The average processing time for a partner visa application is several months to over a year, but processing times can change. Thus, it is advisable to check the  Department of Home Affairs website for up-to-date information and keep track of the progress of your application.

Granting the Visa

Upon approval of your partner visa application, you will receive a temporary partner visa that aligns with the status of your current application.  Once your temporary visa is granted, there will be an opportunity to transition to permanent residency by applying for the right visa subclass (801 or 100).  After two years of submitting your initial partner visa application, you can apply for a permanent visa. Your temporary visa stays valid until a decision is reached on your permanent visa application, allowing you to reside and work in Australia while awaiting the outcome.

Obtaining a partner visa can be a lengthy process, but it is important to stay organised, ensure your contact information is up to date and, above all, remain patient. The path of acquiring a partner or spouse visa requires preparation, diligence and a thorough understanding of the process.

Seeking professional assistance from a registered migration agent can ensure your application is complete, accurate, and meets all requirements. At 4Nations International, we provide personalised advice tailored to your unique circumstances and guide you through the intricacies of the process, increasing your chances of success.

Partner applying for Visitor 600 visa with the hope of applying for onshore 820 partner visa

  • Add to quote
  • When we apply for the general visitor visa, is it advisable to have H write a letter of invitation to confirm that I will be staying with him for 2-3 months as we need to provide proof of accommodation? We are not applying for the family sponsored visitor visa of the same subclass 600, we are applying for the general visitor visa and I am unsure if we can include the letter of invitation from my H.
  • Is it advisable to mention that whilst we will not be overstaying or breaking any provisions of the visitor visa, the intention is to apply for a 820 whilst on shore so we get to spend time together whilst it’s being processed? Would this ensure that they don’t attach the ‘8503- no further stay condition’ to the visa?
  • If it is not advisable to go into details of our intentions of making a onshore partner visa, is it advisable to mention that I will be returning back to the UK to continue my work after my short visit of 2-3 months? Would this ensure that I don’t risk a refusal? Will they not be questioning why I have not lodged an off shore partner visa and why are we doing the long distance?
  • Is there anything else that needs to be mentioned in this letter?
  • Do I need a letter from my employer confirming the dates I would be off work and when I will be returning to work?
  • Is there any advice, tips or ways to ensure that the no further stay condition is not attached to the visitor visa at all?

My husband has got PR and is currently in Australia and has been for the past 6+ years or so. We have been married for 2 years and in a long distance relationship for nearly 1.5 years before marriage. I need to know how best to approach the visitor visa and how much should we disclose at this stage. Also note My H had me included in his PR application as a non accompanying spouse. Would this ensure that they don’t attach the ‘8503- no further stay condition’ to the visa? If it is not advisable to go into details of our intentions of making a onshore partner visa, is it advisable to mention that I will be returning back to the UK to continue my work after my short visit of 2-3 months? Would this ensure that I don’t risk a refusal? Will they not be questioning why I have not lodged an off shore partner visa and why are we doing the long distance? Is there anything else that needs to be mentioned in this letter? Do I need a letter from my employer confirming the dates I would be off work and when I will be returning to work? Is there any advice, tips or ways to ensure that the no further stay condition is not attached to the visitor visa at all? Thanks in advance! Click to expand...

You've got everything right. If your parents are still alive just mention in your letter that you'd be returning back as you want to spend as much time with them. Or if you have a property mention that in the letter as well why you'd be returning. If the no further stay is attached then you'll be applying for a waiver to have it removed and apply for partner visa.
