Counting Crows Come Around to California With Nostalgic Butter Miracle Tour 2022

Adam Duritz and Co. deliver premium fan service on hit-packed set in Costa Mesa

counting crows butter miracle tour opening act

For a moment, I wondered if Counting Crows’ Costa Mesa concert had left me in some trippy state of imagining myself in a music video for their 2008 track, “Come Around.”

While driving back to Los Angeles, small, black, mysterious squares suddenly billowed around my car, swirling in an almost poetic fashion, unlike the usual tire debris or junk littering California’s notorious 405 freeway. At that exact moment, Spotify pushed play on “Come Around” and its eerily fitting opening lyrics.

“Little pieces blowing’ gently on the wind,” frontman Adam Duritz sang on cue. “They have flown down California. They have landed in L.A.”

I spent the rest of the drive contemplating what the universe was trying to tell me through “Come Around” – especially given the song wasn’t even on the set list during Wednesday’s Butter Miracle Tour 2022 stop at California’s Pacific Amphitheater.

Instead, it was throwback hit after hit, which the group churned out from the moment they came on stage, following a rollicking set from David Rosales and His Band of Scoundrels.

Opening the nostalgic 90-minute show, which was part of the 2022 O.C. Fair, with “Recovering the Satellites” from their 1996 album of the same name, the group (comprised of Duritz on lead vocals, Charlie Gillingham on keyboards, Jim Bogios on drums and Millard Powers on bass, plus David Immerglück, Dan Vickrey and David Bryson on guitars) then launched into 20-year-old crowd-pumper “Hard Candy.”

While the track got most fans onto their feet, it was the opening chords of the next song which jolted everyone else up from their seats, amid expressions of shock that the band would roll out their biggest hit, 1993’s “Mr. Jones,” so early in the concert.

The lead single from their 1993 debut album, August and Everything After, “Mr. Jones” became the band’s first radio success, rocketing up charts around the globe. “I wrote it in the middle of the night pretty drunk, I think,” Duritz previously told American Songwriter about the breakout track.

Slowing things down with a powerful, mesmerizing rendition of “Colorblind,” Duritz, 58, then introduced “Butterfly in Reverse.”

“We wrote this song 20 years ago and we played it a few times, then never played it again,” he said. “But a few years ago, my girlfriend started unrelentingly nagging me about this song. She just got such a bug up her ass. And, she’s a fairly reasonable person, but that ‘fairly’ contains multitudes!”

“I said, ‘I can’t really sing it very well,’ and she’s like, ‘You’re so f**ken full of sh**,’” Duritz continued.  “So, eventually we did figure out how to play it. Now, I can’t get it out of the set. I want to sing it every night. It’s timeless.”

Another timeless offering followed as the band took fans on a musical tour of America, starting with “Omaha,” then stopping in “Miami” and “Palisades Park,” before landing in “Washington Square,” which kicked off an acoustic set.

“This is a song about home … going back there tomorrow,” Duritz said. “Thank you so much for coming out and hanging out with us tonight. The show’s not over, but thank you!”

In fact, the show was only halfway done. So, having played a string of older favorites, they launched into their latest release, 2021’s Butter Miracle, Suite One . Duritz began writing the four-track EP while spending time at a friend’s U.K. farm in 2019, then teased the new music by whipping up buttered toast on the online cooking series he shares via Counting Crows’ Instagram .

Marking their first new music since 2014’s Somewhere Under Wonderland, they performed the entire EP, from “The Tall Grass,” to “Bobby and the Rat-Kings,” before taking it back to 1993 with “Rain King,” which prompted a boisterous audience singalong.

“A Long December,” was up next, a nineties hit partly inspired by Hollywood hangs around the time Duritz dated actress Jennifer Aniston.

“In your twenties, you have that house that everyone hangs out at, so for one summer our hang place was this house shared by Samantha Mathis, an actress who’s an old friend of Adam’s, and Tracy Falco who was an agent,” celebrity photographer and Duritz’s pal Randall Slavin told InStyle in 2019. “Jen and Adam had become friends and they were hanging out there. Friends had just exploded and was massive, and Adam was in the biggest band in the country and his record was blowing up, so they were the biggest power couple.”

“The house was on Hillside and Adam immortalized it in the song, ‘A Long December’ when he sings, ‘Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after 2 a.m. ,’” Slavin continued. “He was referring to that house on Hillside, where we would all sit on the back patio until the wee hours of the morning, talking about how everyone’s going to change the world and make great art.”

That’s exactly what Duritz continued to do with his band, who have released seven studio albums over three decades, earned Grammy and Oscar nominations, produced loved film recordings like Shrek 2’s “Accidentally in Love,” played 1,500+ concerts and weathered the storm that Covid-19 inflicted on the music industry.

The pandemic made me see certain tracks and lyrics through a new lens on Wednesday night – “A Long December’s” “ Maybe this year will be better than the last” echoing the hopes of both December 2020 and 2021. Closing song, “Hanginaround,” meanwhile ignited memories of “ bumming around for way too long ” during lockdowns.

For Duritz, the joy of being able to perform live again was evident throughout the show and his final words before bowing out were, “We will be back.”

Perhaps that was also the message behind my “Come Around” 405 freeway moment afterwards: that no matter how long the pandemic wears on, live music, bands, Duritz and Counting Crows, “will still come around.”

'One of our best tours': Counting Crows wrap Butter Miracle Tour in Boston Saturday night

  • COUNTING CROWS with Matt Sucich and Sean Barna on Oct. 9 at Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston

BOSTON — A concert originally slated as the second stop on their late-summer tour became the grand finale of Counting Crows ’ “Butter Miracle Tour” Saturday night at Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston, but for the sold out crowd of 5,000 rock fans, it felt more like a warm reunion with old pals.

The show was first scheduled for August 8 but as Counting Crows singer/songwriter Adam Duritz noted after their fifth song Saturday, after playing their first show in Atlantic City, the band’s traveling party was notified someone had tested positive for COVID-19 when they arrived in Boston.  That night’s show and two subsequent concerts were postponed.  That first week of August had seemed like a wonderful reopening of the music scene, but Counting Crows were one of several acts that have since had to step back and postpone dates. (Dawes will be doing a makeup date for their concert at Boston’s Orpheum Theater on October 26.) If fans in mid-October are a bit more accepting of restrictions like vaccination requirements for entry, there’s also deep gratitude onstage and off for their patience and loyalty.

“It’s been a little weird, but in many ways one of our best tours,” said Duritz, before beginning the sixth tune of the night. “It’s been very strange traveling around in our own little bubble. But we’re all glad you waited and came around tonight. The past year-and-a-half (before this tour) was the longest time I’ve ever gone without playing a gig. Usually when bands get back together after a break like that, they either break up or kill each other. But we’ve been together 30 years now, and the fact that you all keep showing up means the world to us.”

In local theaters: Daniel Craig bids farewell to 007 in 'No Time to Die'

Coming to Boston Oct. 13: Musician Shannon McNally puts a new spin on Waylon Jennings

Saturday night’s two-hour concert included 21 songs, evenly split among all of the band’s seven studio albums, as well as “Butter Miracle: Suite One,” the four-song EP Counting Crows released last May. And we mean evenly split, with four songs each from their 1993 debut album “August and Everything After,” four from the 1996 sophomore effort “Recovering the Satellites,” four from 2002’s “Hard Candy, and all four from the new EP.

It was a show designed to show off all the various musical permutations Counting Crows music has evolved through over the years, and musically the septet was almost flawless. The only quibble we’d have was that on the chilly night, the audience was primed for rockin’ celebration and some of the slower numbers, while exquisitely beautiful in themselves, slowed the night’s momentum.  But pacing problems aside, it was two hours of music to savor.

Duritz and company hit the ground running, with some of their most popular tunes, starting with a slower, somewhat wistful “Round Here.” The amiably bumping folk-rock of “St. Robinson and His Cadillac Dream,” with Charlie Gillingham’s organ sounding like a calliope, may have been the first hint that the night would include plenty of variety. The sizzling rock of “Hard Candy” was a sweet appetizer for “Mr. Jones,” the band’s first huge hit and still probably its most beloved, and again it was slowed down slightly to emphasize the lyrics. It was a smart treatment, where the tempo wasn’t changed a lot, yet the lines seemed opened up more, that extra space bringing layers of meaning.

The quiet piano ballad “Colorblind'”s finish made for a natural pause for Duritz to speak to the audience for the first time.  After his heartfelt greeting, “Omaha” chugged along with accordion and mandolin accents and the audience provided the chorus, making it a communal party.  The ballad “Butterfly in Reverse” swung so easily you could imagine it as part of the soundtrack to an old madcap romantic movie.   “Recovering the Satellites” was primo Duritz, which is to say a frenetic flow of impressionistic lyrics set over surging rock ‘n’ roll.

Oct. 12 in Fall River: On tour through New England, country legend Rodney Crowell talks new album, 'Triage'

The provocative “I Wish I Was A Girl” suggests the singer might understand things better from the female side, but it is mainly about a search for meaning, and the midtempo version Saturday made the lyrics paramount. The martial beat and edgy fire of “Miami” was followed by a complete switch to the all-acoustic tenderness of “Washington Square.” Banjo and harmonica added to a lovely, folk-roots sound here, but honestly, the crowd was a bit too noisy to appreciate it fully.  That moment passed quickly as Counting Crows did their groovy, upbeat take on Joni Mitchell’s “Yellow Taxi,” a hidden cut on their “Hard Candy” album.

The septet’s cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” was another appealingly wistful moment, an easy flowing, good-timey rendition. A tune from the new EP, “The Tall Grass” featured a more textured folk/r&b sound, and then “Elevator Boots” from the EP provided more straightforward rock crescendos. That kicked off a torrid homestretch, with the full-bore rock of “Angel of 14th Street” merging into a romp through “Bobby and the Rat Kings” that was positively anthemic in a way usually associated with prominent New Jersey rock icons.  “Rain King” was the regular set closer with the crowd singing choruses and most of the verses too.

For the encore, Duritz played piano for a warm and engaging take on “A Long December” with mandolin and accordion expanding the sound and prompting another mass singalong. Both opening acts and assorted stage crew joined the septet for “Hanginaround,” which kicked the joyous party vibe into another level and a sprightly “Holiday in Spain” closed the night.

Two songwriters Duritz has mentored opened the night. New York City’s Matt Sucich performed in a duo format with his folk-rock stylings, including from his new album “Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself,” which features Duritz joining him on the jangly ballad “Make Peace.” His streaming sensation from 2016, “Montauk” was a kind of Dylanesque torrent of rhymes examining and seeking truth out of modern life.

Earlier, New York City’s Sean Barna began the night with a half-hour of his raucous and rootsy rock from his latest record “Margaret Thatcher of the Lower East Side.”

Live Review: Counting Crows -The Butter Miracle Tour 2021-Meadow Brook Amphitheatre, Detroit–August 15, 2021

counting crows butter miracle tour opening act

On a Sunday evening  Rock At Night  arrived at the Meadow Brook Amphitheatre in Rochester Hills, Michigan, a beautiful venue located right on the campus of Oakland University, which is about an hour north of Detroit.  It was about two hours before the Counting Crows Butter Miracle Tour show.  The parking lot wasn’t too full but I could see the excitement and anticipation on the faces of the people doing a little tailgating.

I imagine for most people this was one of their first shows since the COVID outbreak. It felt good to be going out on a summer evening and see Counting Crows, the GRAMMY and Academy Award-nominated band that has weathered three decades. The band’s glam-influenced EP Butter Miracle: Suite One, their first album in seven years, was released on May 21,2021,

By the time Counting Crows took the stage  around 9 p.m., the pavilion was full and the hill was booked solid with people.  The band opened with “Goodnight Elisabeth” and led right into “Pale Blue Eyes”.  Adam Duritz told the crowd,  “We are really glad to be on fucking tour” and  “Glad to see people outta’ their houses.” Indeed!

A highlight was a nice three-song acoustic set which included Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil”.  The band played favorites like “Mr. Jones” but also songs like “Bobby and the Rat-Kings” which is from the new EP.   The show seemed a little more downbeat compared with some of the past tours but overall I enjoyed it.

The supporting acts are both singer/songwriters out of NYC  Sean Barna and Matt Sucich.

Counting Crows Bring Butter Miracle Tour to The Capitol Theatre

Counting Crows Bring Butter Miracle Tour to The Capitol Theatre

Last night, Counting Crows closed out their two-night stint at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. Over the two evenings, the San Francisco ’90s icons explored their extensive discography, showcased their latest LP Butter Miracle Suite One , welcomed opener Stephen Kellogg and gave a loving nod to the iconic venue with a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil.”

Counting Crows opened their first set on Tuesday evening with a bust-out of “Sullivan Street,” which was last heard from the band on Sept. 9, 2017. They directly flowed into favorites with the title track of their 2002 LP Hard Candy and arguably their most beloved song, “Mr. Jones.” They continued to roll out hits with “Butterfly in Reverse” and the vivid earworm “Omaha.”

In the middle of the set, they performed “Friend of the Devil” to the elation of the dedicated fans of The Capitol Theatre. Counting Crows followed the classic by ushering newer material off their latest album, 2021’s Butter Miracle Suite One, including “The Tall Grass,” “Elevator Boots,” “Angel of 14th Street,” and “Bobby and the Rat-Kings.” The ensemble went back to their roots with 1993’s “Rain King” before set closer, “A Long December.” After extended applause, Counting Crows returned with special guest Stephen Kellogg in tow for an encore comprised of “Hanginaround,” followed by a rendition of “Holiday in Spain.”

Counting Crows cracked Wednesday’s performance open with a slow-burning favorite off their beloved LP This Desert Life , “Speedway.” They continued with 2008’s “Come Around” and once again left the third and fourth slots to “Mr. Jones.” and “Colorblind.” They continued to explore their three-decade discography with hits including “I Wish I Was a Girl,” “Washington Square,” “God of Ocean Tides,” and more. Like the previous evening, they dished out new cuts from Butter Miracle Suite One during the latter half of the set, hitting The Tall Grass,” “Elevator Boots,” “Angel of 14th Street,” and “Bobby and the Rat-Kings.” Before closing with “Rain King” and “A Long December.”

For the encore on Wednesday, Counting Crows performed “Round Here” before welcoming Kellogg onstage for a cover of his song “Almost Woke You Up,” on which his daughters Sophia and Adeline joined. For the final song of the run, Counting Crows performed “Hanginaround,” this time with Kellogg and his collaborators David Chalfant and Jason Wexler.

Counting Crows Are Not a Punchline. How Can This Be?

The band is back, and despite Adam Duritz’s best efforts, we are ready for them.

It’s not surprising either that Counting Crows would still be making music, even if the songs on the band’s newly released EP Butter Miracle, Suite One are the first they’ve put out since 2014’s Somewhere Under Wonderland . It’s not even surprising that the music is the good kind of familiar; this is a band who’s sounded like they’ve been together for thirty years for thirty years.

What is a surprise is that they’ve done something none of their contemporaries has managed: they’ve made it here, all the way to 2021, without ever becoming a punchline. And that’s straight up shocking when you consider how hard they’ve begged to become one.

counting crows 2005

The they in this case is of course a he . While there are almost certainly other members of the band—some estimates have put this number as high as six—Adam Duritz has always been the focal point of Counting Crows, and despite decades of doing everything we forbid our rock stars to do, he (they, whatever) remains in the pantheon. He’s put a target on his back and a Sideshow Bob weave on his head, yet we refuse to take the shot.

When August and Everything After was released, all those months after that Hall of Fame ceremony, its sound stood out against the chaos of new and underdeveloped post- Nevermind bands that mainstream radio had surrendered to. The album blew up in 1993 and stayed blown up; next time you go to a bar, put any track from it on the jukebox and I promise a minimum of three people will sing along with every word. That ecstatic “yeeeeaah” at the end of “Rain King” says it all: we’re here, and your classic rock station now has no choice but to acknowledge music made after 1984.

counting crows

Getting what he wanted hit Duritz pretty hard, and by their second album, Recovering The Satellites , the melancholy of the man who thinks too much about his fame had set in. (Contrast the weary song-ending “yeahhhhh” of “A Long December” to the one that closes “Rain King.” You could make an entire ‘90s jukebox musical out of Adam Duritz’s yeah s.) He took “Mr. Jones” off the Crows’ setlists because he could no longer relate to the desire for fame in its lyrics. “Have You Seen Me Lately,” he asked, and boy had we. We hate it when rock stars take themselves this seriously, when they hate fame this much and talk about it this openly, especially when they’re this new. We’d just drummed George Michael out of America for less.

In this time, Duritz began committing the cardinal sin of being an average-looking guy who goes out with beautiful, famous women, and to this day he has never repented. A bearded, sad-sack Ric Ocasek with a parade of glowing Paulina Porizkovas, Duritz dated Samantha Mathis, Monica Potter, Emmy Rossum, Jennifer Aniston at the peak of Friends and then Courteney Cox that same year . He’s the first draft of John Mayer, yet somehow he’s dodged the label of “cad.” His list of famous girlfriends is so extensive, my research indicates it includes Trishelle from The Real World: Las Vegas , a fact that just made me push back from my desk and say, out loud: “Adam.”

adam duritz now

And once you start calling the guy out, it’s hard to stop. He covered The Psychedelic Furs’ “The Ghost In You” and made it sound like something from a Berkeley coffee house, leading a generation of less-imaginative singer-songwriters to disembowel their favorite new wave hits. ( Adam .) He did a gender swap on a Joni Mitchell classic so that we wouldn’t think a big yellow taxi had come to take his old man away. (ADAM.) He makes and sells his own wine and spent much of lockdown posting cooking videos on Instagram. ( ADAM. ) He buried the band’s best song on a compilation, so if you wanted “Einstein on the Beach” in 1994, you had to shell out for all of DGC Rarities Vol. 1 . (You ended up with some very good Beck and Weezer tracks that way, but still: ADAM . ) It’s like he’s trying to alienate us, and we just refuse to let him.

They have not remained Pearl Jam huge, but Duritz will likely be the first to tell you that was never the objective. Instead, Counting Crows has simply endured, which is impressive enough given how their early peers have petered out. Hootie and the Blowfish released one of the best-selling debut albums of all time, and got the gas face before they managed a second . Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler had mainstream moments and then went right back to playing colleges. From the Class of 1993, only Dave Matthews Band has joined them in sticking it out, but they’ve also become the easiest fraternity stoner signifier since the Hacky Sack. Counting Crows carries no such stigma. Not even with the white guy dreads.

Butter Miracle Suite One (Limited Edition Vinyl)

Butter Miracle Suite One (Limited Edition Vinyl)

Let us now address the white guy dreads. Early in the band’s career, Duritz said his signature haircut was like his Superman cape, a way to physically manifest rock stardom. Since then, he’s been cagey about whether or not the hair is real, even in recent years when they looked about as natural on his head as a foam We’re Number One finger looks at the end of your arm. He has since either shaved or removed them, depending on who you ask, and a nation offers its thanks.

You will not hear their absence in Butter Miracle, Suite One . It is pure Counting Crows, comforting without feeling like a retread, elevated bar rock and beat storytelling unfolding over four tracks, five if you include vinyl-only B side “August and Everything After.” (Releasing your debut album’s title song as an album track, 28 years after the fact? ADAM! ) It will keep them in the unique place they inhabit in our culture, never a joke or a throwback, not a stadium act but not an act to ignore. Just off to the side, where they’ve always been most comfortable. And though every cell in my body is primed to root against them (him, whatever), I want this for Counting Crows. You might, too.

Counting Crows are back, and in spite of Adam Duritz’s best efforts, we are ready for them. It’s more than a surprise. It’s a goddamn butter miracle.

The new Counting Crows album — the band's first in seven years — is not your typical release. As the title suggests, Butter Miracle Suite One is a record more accurately described as a suite.

The four tracks are like movements, connecting and flowing into each other. For songwriter and lead singer Adam Duritz, it's new territory. But as you'll hear in a live performance with guitarist David Immerglück, the music still sounds unmistakably like Counting Crows.

In this episode, we talk to Adam Duritz about the new album, while looking back on older Counting Crows hits. Listen to the complete session via the audio player and watch the performance via the video player above.

Counting Crows will spend most of their summer on the road with Dashboard Confessional during their 2023 Banshee Season tour .

Counting Crows will stop in 56 cities across North America, with Frank Turner joining as a special guest on select dates, and Dashboard Confessional serving as support for all but seven shows,

“One of the best things about a life in rock and roll is that we spend it traveling the world playing music. It’s even better when you can do it with one of your best friends and watch them play every night too,” Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz shared in a statement. “Chris Carrabba hits the trifecta for me in that he’s one of my best friends in the world, one of my favorite people in the world, and he leads one of my favorite bands of all time, Dashboard Confessional. Sorry for the terrible pun but hands down, this is going to be the best summers ever.”

The Banshee Season tour is scheduled to begin June 13 in Omaha, Nebraska and will wrap at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado on Sept. 25. The bands will make stops in Cincinnati, Niagara Falls, Syracuse, Boston, Bridgeport, Atlantic City, Nashville, Virginia Beach, Los Angeles, and more.

Counting Crows

Counting Crows Find New Inspiration in the Familiar on ‘Butter Miracle, Suite One’

Counting Crows celebrate 30 years of music with a four-song suite rich in imagery and emotion. Adam Duritz is a contender for the best songwriter of his generation.

counting crows butter miracle tour opening act

Butter Miracle, Suite One is the first new Counting Crows release in seven years, but its world feels instantly familiar. The opening track, “The Tall Grass”, begins with an invitation to “come outside”, and one of the final lyrics is a pleading “can you see me?” Those two phrases carry weight for Counting Crows fans. The first was used extensively in “Palisades Park” (from 2014’s Somewhere Under Wonderland ), while “can you see me?” is tied inexorably to the girl on the car in the parking lot and the emotional climax of 1993’s “Round Here” .

That’s how the Adam Duritz lyrical universe works. It’s an emotional tessellation of trains and planes, sleepy Western towns, angels and memories, and ghosts on ghosts on ghosts. He repeats images and lyrics from one song or album or decade to the next, contorting familiar phrases into surprising new shapes and infusing some of the most common words in English with a weighty legacy.

Sandwiched between those two phrases in “The Tall Grass” is a vivid world of wide-open English skies, innocence lost, a rabbit dying in the grass, and the inescapable sense that we’re all just rabbits shaking as the life slowly drains from us. The composition starts gently then builds steadily to a crescendo, Duritz’s rich voice growing louder and more desperate before finally collapsing into a resigned, repeated, “And I don’t know why…”

As a meditation on mortality, “The Tall Grass” is devastating. As a love song, well, it’s very Adam Duritz, equal parts sentimentality (“Did I ever say the way your breath takes mine away?”) and uncertainty (“I am changing, but all the same things just come back to haunt me.”) No one writes I love you, but we’re probably doomed quite like him.

Despite being a four-track affair, Butter Miracle, Suite One feels expansive. You can talk about the songs individually, but it’s called a suite because each flows seamlessly into the next. The melancholic ending of “The Tall Grass” bleeds into “Elevator Boots”, a catchy rocker with a 1970s aesthetic and twisting, playful lyrics. “Angel of 14th St.” blows through a catalog of vintage Counting Crows imagery—angels and ghosts and feathers abound—before a shrieking guitar solo drops into “Bobby and the Rat-Kings”, a story of aimless small-town youth that would make Springsteen proud.

The EP has a classic rock feel, and Duritz doesn’t dissuade the comparison. The second half of “Bobby and the Rat-Kings” has strong “Thunder Road” vibes, while the slight stutter on the G in the lyric “my generation doesn’t have a name” recalls the Who’s classic hit . The rest of Counting Crows are in impeccable form, helping to meld four disparate compositions into a seamless whole like only a group that’s played together for three decades could.

Four songs in seven years isn’t exactly a wealth of material, but Duritz has never been a prolific writer, and 30 years is a long time to stay creatively inspired. “I was kind of burnt out on music in a lot of ways,” he told Forbes . “Very few people have a life in music that lasts this amount of time.” He’s spent the intervening years in other pursuits: singing on friends’ records , cutting his signature dread-locks, maintaining a long-term relationship, and quietly turning the Counting Crows Instagram into his personal cooking show. The self-styled Rain King now gushes about bucatini recipes and roasts his friends on social media. He recently wished comedian Bob Saget a happy birthday, saying, “Swear to God. Guy’s 65 years old today, and looks… 72″ with impeccable comedic timing. In other words, he’s got a lot going on.

So ultimately, the artistry and quality of Butter Miracle, Suite One isn’t surprising at all. When the creative faucet is on, Adam Duritz is a strong contender for the best songwriter of his generation. The mere fact that this mini-album exists at all, to invite us outside into the tall grass and think about life and death and love— that’s the miracle.
