North East, PA Traffic and Road Conditions

North east traffic map.

How to use the North East Traffic Map Traffic flow lines : Red lines = Heavy traffic flow, Yellow/Orange lines = Medium flow and Green = normal traffic or no traffic*. Black lines or No traffic flow lines could indicate a closed road, but in most cases it means that either there is not enough vehicle flow to register or traffic isn't monitored. Also, If you do not see traffic flow, you can zoom in closer to reveal localized data. If you are unable to pan the map, press here (to focus off of the map) and try again.

* In known extreme weather events or accidents, the map provider may still show green lines, even if lanes or the entire road is closed.

Northeast bracing for major storms Sunday

The Northeast U.S. is bracing for severe weather, including potential snowfall, Sunday as a major storm makes its way up the East Coast, while parts of North Carolina and Virginia are under a tornado watch.

Heavy wind and excessive rainfall are expected to hit the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic coast by Sunday evening, with snow likely to fall over the northern Appalachians and interior Northeast, according to a forecast from the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are also expected to drop as a cold front makes its way across the Midwest and the East Coast, according to the NWS.

There is a slight risk of “damaging wind gusts,” and “a few tornadoes are possible” in parts of the eastern Carolinas and southeastern Virginia, as well as parts of northern Florida and southern Georgia, the NWS said.

An official tornado watch was instated for parts of North Carolina and Virginia until 8:00 p.m. ET.

In the Long Island, New York City and lower mid-Hudson regions of New York, “several” inches of rain and strong winds are expected, according to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office. The weather could cause flooding and power outages.

New York City is expected to see up to 3 inches of rain and could experience 50 mph winds, according to Hochul.

Hochul said that heavy, wet snow Sunday night in the North Country, Mohawk Valley, central New York, Capital District and upper mid-Hudson regions will affect travel on Monday and could cause power outages in those areas.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said on the social media site X that across the state, “localized flooding and severe thunderstorms” are expected. He added that snow is possible in the northeastern parts of the state.

Hochul urged New Yorkers to be prepared by paying attention to weather updates and planning any travel accordingly. Murphy encouraged New Jersey residents to stay at home, but to drive slowly and exercise caution if they have to travel.

Middle East latest: Worshippers in Tehran chant 'death to Israel' after strike; man 'carrying explosives' arrested at Iranian consulate in Paris

Worshippers in Tehran gather at a demonstration just hours after an apparent Israeli strike in Iran. Elsewhere, a man is arrested at the Iranian consulate in Paris after claiming to be carrying explosives.

  • Analysis:  This strike has escalation written all over it
  • Analysis: Iran isn't biggest threat to the coalition right now
  • Live reporting by  Emily Mee

An Israeli retired major general has said he doesn't believe Israel's overnight attack on Iran is a "very significant event".

Major General Giora Eiland, the former head of the Israeli National Security Council, said the strike showed Israel can reach "even sensitive places" but it had tried to "do it way that both sides can be satisfied".

He told Sky's World with Yalda Hakim programme that he doesn't "predict real escalation after this".

Asked whether Israel's message had been received in Iran, he said countries will try to emphasise their success and minimise the success of the other side.

He added that in attacking Israel, Iran had created an international coalition against itself - "something they certainly don't want to see".

We've been hearing from our military analyst Professor Michael Clarke , who says the overnight attacks on Iran appear to be the Israelis "going after certain targets directly linked to n[Tehran's] attack last weekend".

It's not been confirmed yet, but he says Israel almost certainly used ballistic missiles - rather than the drones than Iran says were used.

"The Iranians have an interest in saying it was almost certainly a one-off attack, it was drones, it didn't matter," Professor Clarke says.

This "relieves them of the responsibility of being so outraged they have to do something even more decisive", he says.

Both sides are now "trying to save face".

Professor Clarke says Israel wanted to carry out an attack, but not one that would upset its allies too much.

Meanwhile Iran is being "careful not to overplay" Israel's attack.

We reported earlier today on a tweet from Israel's national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir, calling the attack on Iran overnight "lame".

Channel 12 is now reporting a confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached out to the far-right politician to tell him he was harming Israel's national security.

However, the network added he is unlikely to face further repercussions as Mr Netanyahu is reliant on him to remain in power.

Mr Ben Gvir is among the Israeli hardliners calling for a harsher response to Iran and more brutal measures in Gaza.

The Israeli prime minister remains in a tough spot as he is facing calls for de-escalation from Western allies, but he also needs to appease hardliners within his government to stay in power.

The Met Police has retracted its previous statement about two of its officers, who were heavily criticised for threatening to arrest a Jewish man near a pro-Palestinian march.

The officers said the antisemitism campaigner, who was wearing a kippah skull cap, was "quite openly Jewish" so they were concerned about the reaction to his presence near the march.

The Met said it had "reflected on the strength of the response to our previous statement" and wished to make a new apology.

In its earlier statement, the force had said the use of the term "openly Jewish" was a "poor choice of words and while not intended, we know it will have caused offence to many".

It continued: "In recent weeks we've seen a new trend emerge, with those opposed to the main protests appearing along the route to express their views.

"The fact that those who do this often film themselves while doing so suggests they must know that their presence is provocative, that they're inviting a response and that they're increasing the likelihood of an altercation."

But this statement was criticised by the antisemitism campaigner in the video, Gideon Falter, who accused the force of "appalling victim blaming".

"What has dented Jewish Londoners' confidence in the Met is not us making this video public, but the actions of the Met's officers telling me that I cannot be in the area whilst openly Jewish," he said.

"The assistant commissioner appears to be saying that we should have taken this on the chin and kept the video under wraps."

Here is the new statement in full:

"The use of the term 'openly Jewish' by one of our officers is hugely regrettable. We know it will have caused offence to many. We reiterate our apology.

"We have reflected on the strength of the response to our previous statement. In an effort to make a point about the policing of protest we caused further offence. This was never our intention. We have removed that statement and we apologise.

"Being Jewish is not a provocation. Jewish Londoners must be able to feel safe in this city.

"Our commitment to protecting the public extends to all communities across London. It's important that our public statements reflect that more clearly than they did today."

US officials are continuing their silence on the apparent Israeli attack on Iran overnight.

In a news conference just now, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked whether this is part of a strategy to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.

She said she has "nothing to share" and was "not going to speculate on reportings".

Ms Jean-Pierre said the US does not want to see the conflict escalate and will continue to consult with partners.

Israeli fighter jets launched three missiles at an air defence radar site near the Iranian city of Isfahan in last night's overnight strike, according to a report.

ABC News, citing an unnamed US official, said the radar site was part of the protection of Iran's Natanz nuclear facility.

The official reportedly said the missiles were fired from outside Iran and the strike was "very limited".

They also said an initial assessment showed the radar site was taken out, but the assessment has not yet been completed.

Iran earlier said three drones were involved in the attack on Isfahan, and made no mention of any missiles or damage.

The US has publicly said very little about the attack, apart from confirming it was not involved.

By Alex Rossi , international correspondent on the Israel-Lebanon border

The roads through northern Israel along the border with Lebanon are empty of cars.

It is unnervingly quiet.

Since 7 October the area has been under bombardment from Hezbollah militants and tens of thousands of people have left following the government's evacuation rules.

Ariel Frish, the deputy head of security, in Kiryat Shmona, a frontline city, shows me the damage in a residential area.

A house is gutted from fire caused by the explosion from the strike.

"We got attacked by a great wave of missiles, one of the missiles hit this house," he said.

"Nobody was here because we evacuated the city one week before. And if we had not evacuated there would be no survivors.”

The Israel Defence Forces and Hezbollah have been exchanging fire on a daily basis in the north for more than six months - and it feels like a full scale war may not be far away.

Walking through the communities in the north is eerie.

You can hear the sound of birdsong and the constant noise of drones and warplanes circling overhead.

A short distance from the Lebanese border and former IDF commander, Gideon Harari, who lives in one of the communities in the line of fire, says a major confrontation is looking more likely every day.

The situation with Iran and the standoff with Hezbollah, as well as the war in Gaza, make this an incredibly dangerous time for the region.

"The shooting is daily. Rockets, drones every day," he said.

"Now is the most dangerous point in the Middle East for the last forty years. If Israel will take military measures against Iran it might drive us into a Middle East war, a big war."

The internally displaced have moved to hotels and guesthouses in safer parts of Israel.

In Tiberias the evacuees can only wonder when it will be safe to return.

"The mood of the people in Israel is very frustrated. And it is very dangerous to live here," says Daniel Boker, who left his hometown of Metula on the border, months ago.

Tensions are now the highest they've been for decades and that's reflected in the preparations Israel is making.

The national ambulance service, Magen David Adom, has been stockpiling equipment in an underground facility. Chief of staff Uri Shacham, tells me 7 October has changed everything.

"We are preparing for a long-term campaign or long-term war," he said.

"If you had talked to me in September 2023, I would have said we have a supply for one month.

"Nowadays, because of what we are expecting, [we are] preparing... many more month's [worth] of equipment."

Israel now faces crisis on multiple fronts but it is clear the current situation in the north is increasingly untenable.

It will not take much for a broader war to break out.

A video showing explosions in the sky above Isfahan provides further information on last night's attack in Iran.

Sky News determined the video was filmed next to Laleh Park in the northeast of the city by matching features including a road, park, flagpole and three cylindrical structures.

This made it possible to determine the video shows explosions in the sky to the east of the city.

While this video does not contain enough information to tell with certainty what site was targeted, explosions in this general area fit with accounts in Iranian media that a base adjoining Isfahan International Airport was attacked.

This base is located to the northeast of Isfahan. Fars News Agency, a regime-aligned Iranian outlet, has claimed that three explosions occurred near this site as a result of last night's attack. No substantial damage has been reported.

The apparent Israeli attack on Iran has prompted airlines to change flight paths, cancel flights and divert others to alternate airports over security concerns.

Iran closed its airports in Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan in the aftermath and cleared flights from the western portion of its airspace for a few hours after the attack, according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24.

Both the airports and airspace had reopened by 4.45am UK time.

Flydubai said it had cancelled its flights to Iran and an earlier flight had turned back to Dubai.

Tracking data also showed an Iran Air flight from Rome to Tehran was diverted to Ankara, Turkey.

As we reported earlier, Germany's Lufthansa cancelled all flights to Tel Aviv and Erbil until tomorrow, and would avoid Iraqi airspace during this time period.

United Airlines said it would cancel its daily flight from Newark to Tel Aviv until 2 May, while Air Canadasaid it was pausing operations to and from Tel Aviv until the end of June.

Emirates, Flydubai, Turkish Air, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi and Belavia were among the carriers continuing to fly over the part of Iran's airspace that remained open in the initial hours after the attack early today.

Activists and aid workers are preparing another attempt to break through the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

A coalition of organisations, including the IHH and the Mavi Marmara Association from Turkey, are planning to set sail soon onboard the ship Akdeniz.

The exact launch date is unclear but activists are currently sorting aid inside the cargo hold.

The same organisations were previously in charge of a flotilla that attempted to deliver aid in 2010.

Israeli commandos stormed the Mavi Marmara in international waters, leading to an altercation that left nine people dead and dozens of activists wounded.

Crime and public safety | tech companies slash hundreds more bay area jobs as layoffs persist, crime and public safety, crime and public safety | protesting war in gaza, hundreds stop traffic on two major bay area freeways, golden gate bridge, interstate 880 shut for hours; some use chains to attach themselves to cars, concrete barrels.

Bay Area commuter traffic was brought to a halt Monday, as demonstrators calling for an end to the war in Gaza blocked the Golden Gate Bridge and Interstate 880 for hours. It was the second time protestors have shut down major highways in the region since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel plunged the Middle East into bloody conflict and spawned protests across the U.S.

Traffic backed up six miles to the Oakland Coliseum as officers worked to clear the jam.

A short distance west, at 7th Street, some 300 demonstrators impeded traffic at an on-ramp and frontage road entrance to southbound I-880, refusing orders to leave. CHP officers made five arrests , working to remove the protesters and fully reopen the freeway by 1 p.m.

The CHP said around 3 p.m. that all lanes of I-880 were open again in both directions.

On the Golden Gate Bridge, protesters chained themselves to vehicles starting around 8 a.m. The CHP arrested 26 protesters and towed four vehicles. The span was reopened at 12:15 p.m.

“Attempting to block or shut down a freeway or state highway to protest is unlawful, dangerous, and prevents motorists from safely reaching their destinations,” the CHP said in a statement Monday.

Many motorists were not amused.

After the Oct. 7 attack — in which some 1,200 mostly civilian Israelis, including children, were killed, and more than 200 taken hostage — Israel launched a counteroffensive in Gaza. Its attacks, said to target Hamas terrorists, have killed an estimated 30,000 people, including civilians and children.

Monday’s demonstrations were part of a global April 15 “economic blockade” by pro-Palestinian activists. A website called A15Action.com said the move was aimed at “blocking the arteries of capitalism and jamming the wheels of production” because “the global economy is complicit in genocide.” Similar demonstrations were seen in other U.S. cities including Chicago, Philadelphia and Portland, Oregon.

Protester Jon Ramirez-Monaco, an Oakland native who lives in San Francisco, hoisted up one of eight Palestinian flags as he stood with a group of demonstrators on 880. He said he has been protesting for the past six months, horrified by the extensive death toll he’s seen in Gaza and frustrated that government leaders aren’t listening to their constituents’ complaints.

“I understand they would be upset,” Ramirez-Monaco said of commuters’ ire. “But if I was in their position, and I knew that something was going on to help end this war, I would understand it. If I got stuck in traffic at some point, I would support it.”

The A15 Action group said in its statement that “there is a sense in the streets in this recent and unprecedented movement for Palestine that escalation has become necessary: there is a need to shift from symbolic actions to those that cause pain to the economy.” Ramirez-Monaco said he was outraged at reports of thousands of Palestinian children killed in the conflict.

“We see it every day — people who are burned, maimed, losing limbs and so on,” Ramirez-Monaco said. “Our government is paying for it, and so I felt that the least I can do is come out to these protests.”

But Tyler Gregory, chief executive officer of the Jewish Community Relations Council, a coalition of 53 synagogues and Jewish organizations around the Bay Area, said Monday that the freeway shutdown demonstrations were ill-timed coming after Iran’s attacks on Israel over the weekend.

“We’re in some ways reliving the trauma of Oct. 7, not knowing our relatives were going to be okay over there,” Gregory said. “You had 9 million people in bunkers and shelters, including 2 million Palestinian Israelis. Do Israeli civilians get the same attention as Gaza civilians?”

Gregory said Monday’s traffic disruption wasn’t persuasive and that Israelis want peace, too, but are dealing with an existential threat from neighbors who want to destroy their country.

Lawyer Michael Wara of Mill Valley had a class to teach at Stanford University’s law school; he knew about the protest and had planned ahead. After spending 80 minutes sitting in traffic, he started to move — with no chance of getting to campus in time for his class.

He got home just in time to teach via videoconference.

“I support the idea of people exercising their First Amendment rights and protesting, even if it’s inconvenient to me,” Wara said. “The net cost is worth it for living in a free country.”

Officials at the Port of Oakland said that the operators of the four primary marine terminals at the port had been aware of a possible protest, and three of them — Everport, TraPac and SSA Marine — had decided not to operate Monday. Only Matson’s marine terminal was open Monday, and no protesters were present there, authorities said.

Local drivers kept their trucks parked, while those from hubs such as Fresno and Reno did not come to the Bay Area, AB Trucking owner Bill Aboudi said. He added that truckers working the port will be busy Tuesday transporting extra goods.

“All that volume will have to be picked up tomorrow,” Aboudi said.

A group of Google and Amazon workers also announced Monday that they planned “militant action” Tuesday at Google offices near Highway 237 in Sunnyvale over the Mountain View technology giant’s work for the Israeli government. The protest, as part of the No Tech for Apartheid campaign, takes aim at Google’s “Project Nimbus” contract with Israel, a cloud-computing project Israel said will be led in part by that nation’s military.

A spokesperson for the workers said Monday that no highway or freeway blockages were planned Tuesday in connection with actions targeting Google in Sunnyvale, New York City and Seattle. Google did not respond immediately to a request for comment Monday.

In November, protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza shut down the Bay Bridge leading into San Francisco for hours ahead of world leaders’ gathering in the city for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Authorities charged some 80 demonstrators with misdemeanor violations relating to that shutdown, including blocking the roadway and false imprisonment.

Rachel Lederman, senior counsel with the Center for Protest Law and Litigation in Oakland, which is helping with the defense of those demonstrators, said the case since has been resolved with “diversion” out of the criminal justice system. The demonstrators, she said, will perform five hours of community service with a nonprofit of their choice and the misdemeanor charges will be dropped.

Her organization is ready to assist any people charged in Monday’s demonstration, she added.

“We’ll be prepared to defend them and their right to speak out against genocide,” Lederman said.

Israel delays Rafah offensive as it weighs response to Iranian attack. Catch up here

From CNN Staff

Israel was set to take its first steps toward a  ground offensive in Rafah  this week, but has delayed those plans as it mulls a response to Iran’s attack, two Israeli sources have told CNN.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long stressed the importance of invading Rafah to dismantle Hamas’s remaining battalions, despite significant international pressure to call off an all-out ground offensive. But, a military response that risks escalating the conflict with Iran further would pull the military’s attention and resources away from Gaza.

Here's what to know if you're just joining our coverage:

  • War cabinet meeting : Israel's war cabinet reviewed military plans for a potential response against Iran, an official said. The cabinet remains determined to act , but it's not clear if a decision has been made. Israel has vowed to "exact a price" after the unprecedented large-scale drone and missile attack .
  • White House urges de-escalation: US President Joe Biden is focusing on preventing Iran's attack from spiraling into a wider regional conflict , spokesperson John Kirby said. Kirby said ultimately the US wanted tensions to de-escalate.
  • Countries urge restraint : Biden's sentiment is echoed by various countries who are urging Israel and Iran to avoid further confrontation that could plunge the area deeper into conflict. Indonesia, Malaysia , Jordan , Germany , the UK , South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Somalia — among others — have all expressed concern about rising tension in the region.
  • Iran's stance : Iran maintains its attack on Israel was a "legitimate" and “responsible” reaction , the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said.
  • Flight operations resume : Airports in the Iranian capital of Tehran resumed flights at 6:00 a.m. local time on Monday, according to Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency.
  • Israel warns Palestinians to avoid the north : After thousands of Palestinians attempted to return to their homes in northern Gaza, Israel's military warned it was a "dangerous combat zone" through social media and airdropped leaflets .
  • Gaza death toll : The Health Ministry in Gaza says that 68 people were killed in the territory over the past 24 hours as a result of Israeli military operations. A further 94 were injured. CNN cannot verify the figures, and the Ministry does not provide a breakdown of civilians and fighters among the casualties. The Ministry said that since October 7, 33,797 people have been killed and 76,465 injured.
  • West Bank shooting: Israeli gunfire killed one person and critically wounded another in Nablus , in the occupied West Bank, on Monday, the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health said. Israeli police described the man as a "terrorist" and said he threw an explosive device at their forces.
  • Palestinians released : Israeli authorities have released 150 people previously detained in Gaza according to the Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and borders on Monday. Two of the detainees were ambulance workers for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
  • Israeli soldiers wounded : An explosion near the northern border has injured four Israeli soldiers , one severely, the military says.
  • Gaza aid : The Israeli government agency that coordinates the delivery of aid into Gaza says that a new crossing in the north has again been used to deliver food aid .
  • Hostage talks: Hamas has slashed the number of hostages it is willing to release during the first phase of a ceasefire deal by more than half, from 40 down to 20, an Israeli source close to the negotiations said. This represents a significant step backward in the talks.

The post has been updated with details on the war cabinet meeting and the hostage talks.

2 Palestinian farmers killed after confrontation with Israeli settlers near West Bank city of Nablus

From CNN's Mohammed Tawfeeq

Two Palestinians were killed Monday south of the West Bank city of Nablus, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.

The Palestinian official news agency WAFA, citing a local official, said the two were killed by Israeli settlers in Khirbet at-Tawil, which is near the settlement of Gitit.

According to WAFA, Israeli settlers attacked and killed two farmers who were tending their farmland.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah identified the deceased as Abdul Rahman Maher Bani Fadel, 30, and Muhammad Ashraf Bani Jame, 21.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement it received a report Monday "about a Palestinian suspect who attacked a Jewish shepherd" in the Gitit area in the West Bank's Jordan Valley. "A violent confrontation developed there between Palestinians and Israeli citizens," the statement said.

When IDF forces arrived, they "worked to disperse the confrontation," and "during the incident, two Palestinians were killed," the statement said.

A preliminary investigation into the shooting appears that IDF forces did not do it, the statement concluded.

The IDF and the Israel police are investigating the incident, the IDF spokesperson added.

China notes Iran's position on Israel attack and does not condemn strikes

From CNN’s Manveena Suri, Simone McCarthy and Wayne Chang

Wang Yi speaks during a press conference at Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing, China on April 1.

China said it noted Iran’s statement that the actions against Israel were an “exercise of the right of self-defense” during a phone call between the foreign ministers of the two nations on Monday, and did not condemn the weekend strikes.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that China condemned the attack on a consulate building in the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, according to a statement issued by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese foreign minister added the incident “seriously violates international law and is unacceptable.”

“China has noted Iran's statement that the actions it took were limited and it was an exercise of the right of self-defense in response to the attack on the embassy building,” the statement said. “The current regional situation is very sensitive, and Iran is willing to exercise restraint and has no intention of further escalating the situation,” the statement added, quoting Amir-Abdollahian.

Separately, China’s Special Envoy on the Middle East, Zhai Jun, met with Irit Ben-Abba Vitale, Israel’s Ambassador to China, on Monday, in which the latter expressed Israel's position and concerns on the conflict in Gaza.

Zhai said China was “deeply concerned about the current escalation of regional tensions, and conflicts and bloodshed serve the interests of no one.”

“What is pressing now is to achieve an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, ensure humanitarian aid, release all detained personnel as soon as possible, and achieve a political settlement of the Palestinian question based on the two-state solution for the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine,” a statement from the foreign ministry said.

15 more bodies recovered from around Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital as exhumation process continues

From CNN’s Kareem Khadder and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem

A United Nations team inspects the grounds of Al-Shifa hospital after an Israeli raid on April 8.

Fifteen bodies were recovered Monday from around Al-Shifa Hospital following the withdrawal of the Israeli military from the area two weeks ago, Gaza residents and medical crews told CNN.

Health workers and residents in northern Gaza have been searching for what they believe are mass graves and looking for their loved ones after they said Israeli forces killed hundreds of Palestinians and left their bodies to decompose during their two-week siege of the complex.

Hundreds of bodies have been recovered from areas around the hospital complex since the siege ended April 1, a Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson told CNN last week.

Video filmed by CNN Monday shows medical workers, some wearing UN-marked vests walking around the site over mounds of sand, digging up bodies. White body bags can be seen on the side of the excavation site, some marked with text that read “unidentified body” and some with names of people on them.

“Today I bid farewell to my mother who was inside Al-Shifa Hospital during the invasion and attack by the vicious Israeli occupation on this medical complex that has been turned into a big mass of rubble,” Mohammad Al-Khateeb, a resident of Gaza told CNN. “The Israeli military deprived patients, nurses, doctors and the displaced of water, medicine and food."

Al-Khateeb’s mother, Khawala Al-Khateeb, was 75 years old when she was brought to the hospital three days before the Israeli military siege on the complex and surrounding neighborhood of Al-Rimal, and was killed three days after, he said.

CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for comment on these allegations but has not received a response.

Waleed Abu-Laila told CNN he had been searching for his mother since the Israeli siege on the hospital ended on April 1. On Monday, he said he found her body and was only able to identify her "from the specific markings on her feet and hands" from when she had a toe and finger amputated back in November.

Video shows Abu-Laila opening a white body bag, revealing his mother’s decomposed body.

“The hospital was blocked from all sides and there were bodies were scattered all over, squashed on the streets from the tank rails. When I got a call to come check the unidentified bodies, I opened a bag that was marked 'unidentified' and immediately found my mother’s body decomposed,” he said.

Khadr Al-Za’anoun of Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, contributed to this report.

Hamas lowers number of hostages it's willing to release as part of a ceasefire deal, Israeli source says

From CNN’s Jeremy Diamond in Tel Aviv

Hamas has slashed the number of hostages it is willing to release during the first phase of a ceasefire deal by more than half, an Israeli source close to the negotiations said.

In its latest counterproposal, Hamas offered to release fewer than 20 hostages in exchange for a six-week ceasefire, more than halving the number of 40 hostages that has been the basis of negotiations for months now, representing a significant step backward in the talks.

A senior Biden administration official confirmed that Hamas is focused on those 20 for the first phase of a potential ceasefire deal. The official also confirmed Hamas is telling mediators that it only has around 20 remaining hostages who are women or sick, wounded and elderly men.

Hamas also called for the release of more Palestinian prisoners in exchange for fewer hostages, the source said, as well as a higher number of prisoners serving life sentences.

The Israeli source said the latest Hamas counterproposal signals that Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza, does not want a deal, seeking to exploit fissures between the US and Israel over Israeli military operations in Gaza and domestic pressure on the Israeli government.

Basem Naim, a Hamas spokesperson, said Hamas had proposed “releasing (three) captured Israelis each week,” but said “no one is talking about final numbers.”

Beyond the ratio of Palestinian prisoners, Hamas is continuing to demand assurances about a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and unrestricted access for Palestinians to return to northern Gaza.

“I think part of this is Hamas thinks they're winning. Because their definition of success is survival and they've survived so far,” the Biden official said. “The longer the conflict has gone on the more recalcitrant Hamas has become rather than the other way around.”

This post has been updated with remarks from a Biden official.

Israeli prime minister says international community must "stand united in resisting this Iranian aggression"

From CNN’s Eugenia Yosef in Haifa and Larry Register in Atlanta

It's imperative the international community "stand united in resisting this Iranian aggression, which threatens world peace," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Monday statement from his office on X .

Netanyahu added:

“Directly and through its terror proxies Hamas and others, Iran is conducting a full-scale campaign of aggression that threatens not only Israel but the entire Middle East.”

Netanyahu's comments follow an Iranian strike against Israel over the weekend in which more than 300 missiles and drones were launched.

Tehran said the attack was in retaliation for a deadly Israeli attack against a consulate building in the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus.

Golden Gate Bridge reopens after protestors against the war in Gaza block traffic

From CNN’s Cindy Von Quednow and Jeffrey Kopp

Protesters are monitored by California Highway Patrol officers on Interstate 880 southbound near the 7th Avenue on ramp in West Oakland, California, on April 15.

The Golden Gate Bridge has reopened after demonstrators protesting the war in Gaza shut down the busy roadway Monday morning, California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay told CNN.

Traffic is beginning to flow again as both sides of the bridge reopened, Barclay added.

Earlier in the day, protestors also blocked Interstate 880 in Oakland and the roadway remains impacted, Barclay said. The northbound side of the interstate is almost completely clear, while the southbound side remains closed, the officer detailed. Protests continue on the interstate, aerial and ground video from CNN affiliate KGO showed .

“Arrests have been made, and are continuing to be made,” Barclay said in an email early Monday.

Before the law enforcement response, protesters held signs, including one that read “Stop the world for Gaza.”

I-880 reopened traffic later Monday, California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel told CNN. Protesters are still demonstrating on city streets near the interstate, the officer added.

Montiel was not able to say how many people were arrested in the incident.

US military assets remain in Middle East as Israel debates response to Iran attack, Pentagon says

From CNN's Haley Britzky

Additional US military assets that had been moved into the Middle East before Iran’s attack on Israel remain in place, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said Monday.

Ryder's comments come as Israel debates possible retaliation to Iran’s attack.

"As (Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin) has said, both publicly and privately, we don't want to see escalation, but we obviously will take necessary measures to protect our forces in the region and as was demonstrated over the weekend, we'll take necessary measures to defend Israel," Ryder said.
