Review: LEGO 40579 Eiffel’s Apartment (GWP)

December 12, 2022 By Jay Ong 3 Comments

paris tour eiffel lego

One of 2022’s most pleasant (and impressive) surprises has to be 10307 Eiffel Tower , the tallest LEGO set ever, which I reviewed back in November .

Accompanying 10307 Eiffel Tower at launch is an exclusive gift with purchase, 40579 Eiffel’s Apartment which you can only get when you purchase the LEGO Eiffel Tower from LEGO.com , until 31 December 2022.

It depicts a small cutaway diorama of Gustave Eiffel’s personal apartment right at the top of the Eiffel Tower, and is a fun accompaniment to the super-tall LEGO Eiffel Tower set, and a nice little bonus for those investing in it.

Here’s a quick review and tour of 40579 Eiffel’s Apartment !

Apologies for the lateness of this review – I was meant to get it much earlier, but it got lost in the post, went to the other side of Australia (to Perth), and has only just arrived, about a month after

Special thanks to LEGO for sending this set for this review!

First thing’s first, here’s a look at the instruction manual, which got pretty squished as it was packed pretty tightly and curled up within the box.

It has the ubiquitous “black LEGO for Grown Ups” design, but apart from that, there’s nothing special about it. There isn’t even a page dedicated to Gustave Eiffel’s apartment, and why it’s significant enough to be featured as a GWP.

paris tour eiffel lego

One of the downsides of this set is the heavy reliance on stickers – there are 12 stickers to apply, a lot for a set this size.

While the number of stickers will infuriate sticker-haters, they do come in handy to replicate the period-appropriate patterned wallpaper, to give it that extra bit of historical accuracy.

paris tour eiffel lego

One of the highlights of the set is the inclusion of a Gustave Eiffel LEGO minifigure – the design does a decent job of matching Gustave’s appearance, but as he’s not a super-well known minifigure, only passionate Eiffel Tower fans will likely be able to recognise him at first glance, without any prompts.

The minifigure looks like a distinguished old man, with a flashy black formal dinner jacket. Gustave Eiffel’s minifigure head isn’t new, with LEGO recycling Obi Wan Kenobi’s head (which does work well), and the torso is also repurposed from 75948 Hogwarts Clock Tower .

paris tour eiffel lego

Here’s a look at the back printing. There isn’t an alternate face printed on.

The minifigure is a lovely addition to LEGO’s growing collection of historic figures such as Amelia Earhart and Jane Goodall , which will appeal to history buffs.

paris tour eiffel lego

Here’s a look at the completed model which cleverly captures a cross section of Gustave’s Eiffel’s apartment, which is perched right at the top of the Eiffel Tower, directly above the public observation platform.

The cutout format allows a blend of interiors and exteriors, focusing on a corner of the apartment which is furnished and decorated to look like a 19th century home.

paris tour eiffel lego

Space is a premium here, and just like the real apartment the presence of the iron beam which sticks through most of the living areas is captured here very well, adding plenty of points for accuracy.

paris tour eiffel lego

Despite the stickers, the wallpaper patterns used are incredibly detailed and true to the wallpaper preserved in Eiffel’s Apartment, which add a lot of realism to the apartment.

Check out a tour and more information about the Apartment in this Youtube video, which also contains some interesting insights into the Eiffel Tower’s history as a whole.

paris tour eiffel lego

There’s a small desk for Gustave Eiffel to read/write letters. Apparently, he used to get plenty of fan and hate mail from those that hated the design of the Eiffel Tower, as well as incredible offers to rent the apartment from him.

Nice window view too.

paris tour eiffel lego

And in the other corner of the room is a small side table with some flowers/plant, as well as a mini version of the Eiffel Tower which uses LEGO revolvers for its feet.

The revolver use is really clever and gives it a very unique look, and in my head, this could be a meta joke, where Gustave Eiffel has his very own LEGO Eiffel Tower set in his apartment.

paris tour eiffel lego

The exteriors on the other hand is pretty bland, with a monochrome dark bluish gray look, which on one hand accurately mirrors the actual LEGO Eiffel Tower, but isn’t terribly exciting to look at.

paris tour eiffel lego

There are 2 telescopes for Gustave to spy on his haters, and admire the view of Paris from above, and there is plenty of space to place the minifigure, or invite some of Gustave’s other friends to the observation deck.

The walls are a little bland, and too prison-like for my liking.

paris tour eiffel lego

Here’s a comparison with the top of the actual LEGO Eiffel Tower.

paris tour eiffel lego

What I liked:

  • Gustave Eiffel is a splendid historic minifigure
  • Warm colourful design on the inside matching 19th century interiors
  • Accurate wallpaper stickers

What I didn’t like:

  • Lots of stickers to apply
  • Exterior is quite boring
  • Have to buy the Eiffel Tower to get this

FINAL THOUGHTS:

For history buffs and passionate Eiffel Tower enthusiasts, 40579 Eiffel’s Apartment is a great little gift with purchase (GWP) that complements the larger, more expensive LEGO Eiffel Tower really well.

The inclusion of the Gustave Eiffel minifigure is great, and I’d love to see more historic figures get the minifigure treatment.

The interiors are pleasantly decorated, giving the apartment plenty of life, and I especially like the accuracy of the the wallpaper designs, even if its a bit of a pain to apply so many stickers.

It’s a nice little bonus for those with the capacity and ability to purchase the LEGO Eiffel Tower, and if timed right with Double VIP or other LEGO GWPs, feels like you’re getting more bang for your buck.

Sadly, it’s also gated behind one of the most expensive LEGO sets of 2022, and something that not many have the capacity to just impulse purchase. It would’ve been really nice to see this GWP be a lot more accessible, but at the same time, I understand the need to reward early adopters of the 10307 Eiffel Tower with an exclusive GWP.

Rating   and score: 3/5  ★★★✰✰

Build [3]  – After the repetitive and long Eiffel Tower build, this was a nice palate cleanser Real Value [3]  – Gated behind an expensive set, but feels like a nice reward for those who bought it early on Innovation [3]  – Not a lot of innovative techniques or builds, but I like the continuation of historical figures, and accuracy of wallpaper Coolness [3]  – A really unique GWP that’s well designed and celebrates the history and legacy of Gustave Eiffel that complements 10307 Eiffel Tower Keepability [4]  – As it’s small, this is a fun one to display, with the LEGO Eiffel Tower, or alongside other historical figures

40579 Eiffel’s Apartment is a free gift with purchase (GWP) for those that purchase 10307 Eiffel Tower from LEGO’s online store that will be available while stocks last, or until 31 December. That said, I can see them extending it, until they run out given how hard it is to qualify for this GWP.

Special thanks to LEGO for sending this set over for an early review!

Review: #21044 Paris Skyline

Does this cute microscale rendition of the City of Lights shine as brightly as the real thing? I hope so!

paris tour eiffel lego

Paris is a vibrant city, best known for the iconic Eiffel Tower, but also for a rich culture of fine arts, delicious food, and beautiful low-rise architecture. The city has already been well represented in the LEGO Architecture Landmarks series in #21024 Louvre , #21036 Arc de Triomphe , and #21019 Eiffel Tower —all of which are captured in the new Paris skyline set.

My first impression of the new Skyline set was positive. I was immediately impressed with this smaller re-interpretation of the Eiffel Tower, which remains faithful to the landmarks gracefully curving form despite the small size.

My eye then jumped to the immediately recognizable microscale Arc de Triomphe on the left, and the tiny re-creation of the Louvre on the far right. The rest of the model required a bit more effort to recognize: with a tiny rendition of Avenue des Champs Elysées, the infamous Tour Montparnasse skyscraper, and the Grand Palais.

While the overall composition is less dynamic than #21043 San Francisco (the other new 2019 skyline set, see review ), my initial impressions compare favorably to other sets in the series because the microscale models look good.

About the set

The set comes in the same premium flip-top box used for the rest of the Architecture series, with a bound softcover instruction booklet. #21043 San Francisco and #21044 Paris are the 9th and 10th additions to the Skyline series (which debuted in 2016). Sets in the series seem to keep getting bigger—both of the 2019 sets are larger than most of the sets from previous years.

Build Process

I am pleased to see multiple numbered bags, even in a set this small. This is a two-stage build, with two bags marked ‘1’, and two bags marked ‘2’. Numbered bags allow you to build a set more quickly since you spend less time looking for parts, and allows you to build the set on a smaller table!

The build process is broken into two bags.

In the first bag, we start by building the base of the model. Fans of the Skyline series will notice that the base is weirdly shaped with many protrusions in the back. Judging from the front cover and the position of the four 2×2 gray plates, this is clearly needed to accommodate the Eiffel Tower.

Base of model.

Grand Palais

The first structure we assemble is the Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées, a massive exhibition site and museum which was built for the Universal Exposition of 1900. The curvy Beaux Arts style building has an iron, steel, and glass vaulted roof which allows light to fill the interior. This is tastefully re-created in the LEGO model using trans-clear 2×2 round bricks.

Grand Palais. (Photo: Dennis Jarvis, CC BY-SA 2.0)

The buildings curvy Beaux-arts style exterior is artfully captured using a selection of round elements. I do want to call out a few caveats: The model is fragile due to a lot of one stud connections. I wish the Sand Green arch above the main entrance was captured in the finished model. Lastly, the left and right end of the building isn’t particularly accurate to the real building which terminates with a curved roof, instead of an arched roof.

Champs-Élysées

Next, we build a tiny representation of the famous tree-lined avenue which connects the Arc de Triomphe with the rest of the city. The real avenue is many blocks long, so we only get a taste with this charming selection of brightly colored buildings and the tree-lined avenue. Too bad they weren’t able to include some tiny cyclists racing to win the Tour de France at this scale!

Champs-Élysées. (Photo: Josh Hallett, CC BY-SA 2.0)

Arc de Triomphe

I’m not going to lie, but this model is pretty dissapointing. The real building is rectangular, with a larger arch on the long side and two smaller and lower arches on the sides. This version is square, with the same part (1×3 Arch) used on both the front and the sides. Using a 1×4 on the front would have been a much more effective and realistic choice. I do like the roof detailing, though.

Arc de Triomphe. (Photo: Jiuguang Wang, CC BY-SA 2.0)

Eiffel Tower

This version of the Eiffel Tower gets the building’s curvaceous shape and overall proportions almost exactly right, but it loses some of the building’s elegance since the supports are too thick.

Eiffel Tower. (Photo: Pedro Szekely, CC BY-SA 2.0)

I also deeply dislike the choice to use a printed clear brick to re-create the arches at the bottom of each leg. The LEGO Architecture series has always been rooted in the creative use of classic system elements, and having a clear part that isn’t meant to mimic glass feels disingenuous. (Why they didn’t use a short section of flex tube is beyond me.)

About the parts

The set contains 694 pieces with a price of $49.99. That’s right around $0.07/piece, which is really good even though the set features lots of relatively small parts. (I believe architecture sets should be well under 0.08$/piece since they are unlicensed sets, and typically use a lot of small pieces.)

Printed parts

The set includes two different printed elements, but only one is unique to this set.

  • Four (4x) Trans-clear 3 x 6 x 1 Curved Windscreens (part 62360), used for the curved support at the base of the Eiffel Tower.
  • Six (6x) 1 White 1×1 plate with a black stripe on one side. (It is 3024pb010, which was introduced in 2017 set #70620 Ninjago City.)

The base of the Eiffel Tower relies heavily on printed parts.

While this set reflects a set of fairly safe choices based on the history of the LEGO Architecture Skylines series, I feel like they missed the mark in a couple key areas. The worst offense is the square Arc de Triomphe, especially since it could have been fixed so easily. Even though this version of the Eiffel Tower expertly captures the shape of the building, it is too chunky and relies on disingenuous printed parts to achieve the curved supports on the base. It’s too bad that the two most iconic landmarks of Paris weren’t quite right, as the rest of the buildings in the model are quite satisfactory.

#21044 Paris Skyline.

Given this mix of highlights and lowlights, I’m left wanting to give this a stronger recommendation, but ultimately giving it a “Good” (3/5 star) rating . It contains some clever building techniques, a wide variety of interesting parts, and the finished model looks good. It also represents a great value at nearly $0.07 per piece.

Nice review, and I totally agree with your criticisms. Le Tour d’Eiffel is somewhat underwhelming, and Le Arc de Triomph is plain ugly in my eyes. The other parts is very nice. And also, I can’t shake off the feeling that the choices of building is a little too safe. I would had loved to see some more bold choices, like Centre Pompidou or La Defence. But, but, who am I kidding. Of course I’ll buy this one.

Nice review. I totally agree with your criticisms. Also, I kind of think they made some choices of buildings that are, well not questionable, but a bit boring. Centre Pompidou or La Defence would have been more interesting in my opinion.

I completely agree with your critiques. I think that the Arc de Triomphe should have been 2×3 instead of 3×3. In addition, I think that the Eiffel Tower should’ve been rotated 45 degrees to better display its curves. Nonetheless, it’s a great model and I appreciate the honest review.

I am new to both Lego building & design and to the brickarchitect.com website, that said, I appreciate the honest approach taken to reviewing this set. Lego is a fascinating tool to design with and being able to rely on honest reviews of individual sets is a comfort. The City of Lights offers many well known, beautiful and architecturally interesting buildings providing myriad options to select from. It is my hope that Lego will, some day, revisit Paris with, perhaps, a more Beaux Arts eye for style and design.

LEGO Architecture 21044 Paris Skyline Review

' src=

Who needs a trip to Paris when you can have this LEGO 20144 Architecture Paris Skyline set on your shelf? Okay, crossing the channel would still be cool, but this is a great little set, featuring some of the French capital’s most notable buildings.

It’s a striking-looking set and a relatively easy build. Though you may end up side-eyeing the Eiffel Tower, fiddling with it until you’re convinced it’s absolutely straight.

paris tour eiffel lego

LEGO Architecture 21044 Paris Skyline

  • RRP : £44.99
  • Number of pieces : 649
  • Release date : January 2019
  • Age rating : 12+
  • Time to build : 2-3 hours

What’s in the box?

The pieces of LEGO Architecture 21044 Paris Skyline are split into four bags: two labelled “1” and two labelled “2”. Would it have been simpler to have four distinct bags and stages? Yes, but this set isn’t so massive that hunting for pieces is problematic.

The manual, like the LEGO Architecture London Skyline set before it, features photographs and facts covering all the buildings that make up this set. Sure, everyone knows the Eiffel Tower, but we got a kick out of learning about Tour Montparnasse, a skyscraper that’s proven a little divisive.

paris tour eiffel lego

With nearly 650 pieces, LEGO Architecture 21044 Paris will take you around two to three to build. But compared to the London set, it was a little more entertaining to build. In particular, we were glad we didn’t have to mess around with all those transparent blue pieces, putting together a river.

You build each building individually and it’s gratifying to see the skyline come together, location by location. A few of the pieces have been used a little creatively but there’s nothing that seems massively out of place. The toughest part is building the Eiffel Tower, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, there’s a section where you have to basically balance the corner pieces, then secure them with a 2×4 grey block. It’s a little too easy to dislodge them, before you’ve managed to lock them down. Secondly, the main body of the tower will take you a while to get straight.

It’s like the car in Father Ted – you’ll move one bit, then notice that’s pushed another part out of place. Like the London set’s London Eye, we ended up setting for it being “good enough”.

paris tour eiffel lego

Play or display?

This is absolutely a display set, but it’s not that we can’t imagine the Paris skyline flying through space, battling a LEGO Super Star Destroyer . Instead, it’s that a few of the pieces will work loose if you poke them too much. We’re impressed with the way the set recreates the Grand Palais, but the wings do come off a little too easily.

Besides which, the LEGO Architecture Paris Skyline looks absolutely gorgeous sitting on a shelf, right next to the LEGO Architecture London Skyline set.

Value for money?

Should you pay this set’s £44.99 RRP? We managed to get ours a little cheaper but we’d still have paid full price for this. It’s striking for its scale and it’s an awful lot cheaper than LEGO’s solo Eiffel Tower set .

Should you buy LEGO Architecture 21044 Paris Skyline?

If you’re a fan of the LEGO Skyline sets, or a Francophile, absolutely. The LEGO Architecture Paris set is one of our favourites so far and while we’re not going to say it’s 100% accurate it’s a great approximation of the French capital, given its size and scale.

The one catch, as with all the Skyline sets, is that LEGO has retired lots of them, and hasn’t released any new ones for several years. So if you were looking forward to massive shelf-spanning skyline you’ll have to pay through the nose or give up on your dream. But even as a solo set, this is well worth having.

After relegating my Lego to the loft, many years ago, I've regained my interest in these plastics bricks, partly because today's sets seem so, so much cooler than when I was a kid. Though I'm still reluctant to spend three figures on a single set.
