Memorial preview

After a week off, the PGA Tour is back in designated-event territory with one of the biggest non-major events of the year: the Memorial Tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus. While there’s always incentive for big-name pros to show up at Jack’s place, there’s even more this year, thanks to a massive purse of $20 million.

Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler will continue their year-long battle for the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking this week at Muirfield Village, and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy will once again try to turn his season around with a big victory.

Meanwhile, defending champion Billy Horschel will look to repeat at Muirfield and grow his bank account significantly.

Golf Channel and CBS will provide TV coverage of the Memorial Tournament, and PGA Tour Live on ESPN+, Peacock and Paramount+ will stream the action online.

The 25-year-old won the 2023 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, on Sunday for his fourth PGA Tour victory. Hovland shot a final-round 2-under 70 to claim the title at 7 under after a one-hole playoff with Denny McCarthy.

For his efforts, Hovland will take home the top prize of $3.6 million, while McCarthy will leave with $2.18 million out of the $20 million designated event purse.

2024 Houston Open odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's called 10 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the texas children's houston open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

tony-finau-pga-golf-usatsi.jpg

For those that haven't already earned their way into the field of the 2024 Masters, there are only two weeks remaining to earn an invitation via a win on the PGA Tour or by moving into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking. The 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open will begin on Thursday and it will once again be a proving ground for players trying to sharpen their game in anticipation of Augusta or to earn an invite. The tournament will take place at Memorial Park Golf Course and will return to the spring after being held as a fall event from 2019-2022. The first tee times come at 8:20 a.m. ET.

Tony Finau won the last Houston Open in 2022 but he'll have some serious competition from superstars like Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark and Will Zalatoris this time around. Scheffer is the 14-5 favorite in the 2024 Houston Open odds followed by Clark at 14-1 while Finau and Zalatoris are both priced at 18-1. Before locking in your 2024 Houston Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2024 Houston Open field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Houston Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Houston Open 2024: Finau, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, struggles this week and doesn't even crack the top five. Finau coasted to victory at the 2022 Houston Open, shooting 16-under par and winning by four strokes. He went wire-to-wire and set a tournament and course record of 264 en route to his fifth career win.

However, Finau has struggled mightily in recent weeks, finishing T-45 or worse in three of his last five starts on the PGA Tour, which includes a missed cut at last week's Valspar Championship. Finau's recent rough patch can be directly attributed to his inconsistent putting stroke. The 34-year-old enters this week's event ranked 144th in strokes gained: putting (-0.460) and 131st in total putting (235.3), which doesn't bode well for his chances to finish on top of the leaderboard.

Another surprise: Thorbjorn Olesen, a 60-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Olesen is currently ranked No. 68 in the Official World Golf Ranking after missing his last two starts on the PGA Tour but he's ranked as high as No. 33 and he's an eight-time winner on the DP World Tour.

That includes a six-shot win earlier this year at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship which helped him earn a special invitation to the 2024 Masters. Now Olesen is in the United States looking to sharpen up his game for Augusta and the 34-year-old Dane could be a serious factor this week at Memorial Park.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Houston Open picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 40-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Houston Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Houston Open 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Houston Open leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including last year's Masters and Open Championship.

There are only 15 days remaining before the opening round of the 88th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, the first major championship of the men's professional golf season.

While defending champion Jon Rahm is playing in the LIV Golf League, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has emerged as a heavy betting favorite after back-to-back victories on the PGA Tour. The 2022 Masters champion also knows his way around Augusta National pretty well.

With the PGA Tour headed to Texas for the last two stops before the Masters, starting with this week's Texas Children's Houston Open, it's a good time for the latest edition of the PGA Tour power rankings.

Of course, there's no surprise at No. 1. But during a season in which rookies and other lesser-known first-timers have won tournaments, you might have to look further down the list for superstars.

pga tour memorial tournament

1. Scottie Scheffler

The world No. 1 golfer is coming off back-to-back victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship. He has two top-10 finishes at Memorial Park Golf Course, including a tie for second in 2022. He could become the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win in three straight starts. Rory McIlroy was the last to do it in three consecutive starts in stroke-play events (DJ's streak included the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play).

pga tour memorial tournament

2. Wyndham Clark

The reigning U.S. Open champion was runner-up to Scheffler in each of his past two starts, finishing 5 strokes back at the API and 1 back at the Players Championship -- after his birdie putt on the 72nd hole cruelly lipped out. He was ranked No. 189 in the Official World Golf Ranking when he played in the 2022 Texas Children's Houston Open. Now, he's one of the best players in the world, ranking third on tour in shots gained: total (1.869), eighth in tee to green (1.214) and 12th in putting (.656).

pga tour memorial tournament

3. Xander Schauffele

Schauffele couldn't hold a final-round lead at the Players Championship, but there's no question he has played spectacular golf lately. He has already piled up six top-10 finishes in eight starts this season, including top-5s in three of his past four. One of the top golfers in the world without a major championship victory, the former Olympic gold-medal winner will be riding a lot of momentum heading into the Masters, where he'll try to finally bag a big one.

pga tour memorial tournament

4. Hideki Matsuyama

The 2021 Masters champion picked up his ninth PGA Tour victory at the Genesis Invitational in February. He followed that with a tie for 12th at the API and a tie for sixth at the Players Championship. Despite battling a back injury again, Matsuyama has been great from tee to green and around the green, but he ranks 134th in strokes gained: putting (-.378).

pga tour memorial tournament

5. Ludvig Åberg

After picking up his first PGA Tour victory in his last start in 2023 at the RSM Classic, the former Texas Tech star hasn't slowed down. He has three top-10s in seven starts, including a runner-up finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He hits it long and straight and doesn't make many mistakes. He'll make his first start in a major championship at the Masters.

pga tour memorial tournament

6. Will Zalatoris

Zalatoris missed the cut in his most recent start at the Players Championship, but his form has returned after he underwent back surgery in April that sidelined him for the rest of 2023. He had a pair of top-5s against loaded fields in signature events -- a tie for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and for second at the Genesis Invitational. His ballstriking is as good as ever; he ranks sixth in strokes gained: approach (.789).

pga tour memorial tournament

7. Rory McIlroy

McIlroy seemed poised for a fast start after he tied for second at the Dubai Invitational and won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for a record fourth time on Jan. 21. That success hasn't carried over to the PGA Tour, however, as he has just one top-20 finish in five starts so far -- a tie for 19th at the Players Championship. He ranks second in strokes gained: off the tee (.938) but 119th in approach (-.176).

pga tour memorial tournament

8. Brian Harman

Harman's missed cut at last week's Valspar Championship might have been the result of a hangover from his narrow miss at the Players Championship. He finished 1 stroke behind Scheffler and had a good look for a tying birdie on the 72nd hole. The reigning Open Championship winner tied for 12th at the API.

pga tour memorial tournament

9. Nick Taylor

The Canadian picked up his fourth PGA Tour victory -- and his second straight in a playoff -- by outlasting Charley Hoffman in two extra holes at the WM Phoenix Open on Feb. 11. Taylor ranks 127th in strokes gained: off the tee (-.158) but makes up for it with stellar iron play (15th in approach) and putting (20th).

pga tour memorial tournament

10. Matthieu Pavon

On Jan. 27, the 31-year-old became the first golfer from France since 1907 to win on the PGA Tour when he defeated Nicolai Hojgaard by 1 stroke at the Farmers Insurance Open. He also tied for seventh at the Sony Open in Hawaii and was solo third at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

pga tour memorial tournament

11. Sahith Theegala

Theegala seems close to winning something big. He has four top-10s in eight starts this season, including in each of his past two -- a tie for sixth at the API and for ninth at the Players Championship. He's fourth on tour in shots gained: total (1.446) and seventh in putting (.821).

pga tour memorial tournament

12. Sam Burns

Burns is tied with Theegala for third-most top-10 finishes on tour this season with four. He tied for third in the WM Phoenix Open and for 10th at the Genesis. He ranks 24th in shots gained: total (.875) and 23rd in putting (.542).

pga tour memorial tournament

13. Cameron Young

Young narrowly missed out on picking up his elusive first PGA Tour victory again last week, finishing 2 strokes behind Peter Malnati at the Valspar Championship. It was Young's seventh runner-up finish in 60 tour starts, the most of any player without a victory dating back to 1970, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Young is too talented not to end the drought at some point.

pga tour memorial tournament

14. Patrick Cantlay

The eight-time PGA Tour winner's results have been hit or miss so far this season. He tied for 11th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and for fourth at the Genesis. Cantlay had four other finishes outside the top 35. His inconsistent play off the tee and iron play are to blame -- he ranks 143rd in strokes gained: approach (-.359) and 135th in driving accuracy (55.2% fairways hit).

pga tour memorial tournament

15. Viktor Hovland

The reigning FedEx Cup champion, who looked ready to challenge Scheffler for world No. 1 at the end of last season, has limped through the first three months of 2024 with an average finish of 39.4 in five starts. He had just one top-20 -- a tie for 19th at the Genesis Invitational. Hovland has been frustrated with his swing and is working with a new coach, Grant Waite. His chipping woes have reemerged as well.

pga tour memorial tournament

16. Jake Knapp

A nightclub bouncer just three years ago, Knapp became the third PGA Tour rookie to win this season when he captured the Mexico Open at Vidanta on Feb. 25. The former UCLA golfer has three top-5 finishes in 12 starts.

pga tour memorial tournament

17. Chris Kirk

Kirk has cooled off a bit after capturing his sixth PGA Tour victory at the season-opening Sentry in Hawaii in January. It was his second win in 11 months after he came out on top at the Honda Classic in February 2023. He's 140th in strokes gained: putting (-.404) but has been more than solid off the tee and on approach.

pga tour memorial tournament

18. Justin Thomas

JT's struggles seemed to be in the rearview mirror after he had four top-12 finishes in his first five starts this season. He took a couple of steps back with missed cuts at the Genesis Invitational and Players Championship and a tie for 64th at the Valspar Championship. Still, his form seems headed in the right direction again.

pga tour memorial tournament

19. Shane Lowry

After a slow start to 2024, Lowry has rebounded with three consecutive top-20 finishes, including a tie for fourth at the Cognizant Classic and a solo third at the API. Lowry announced this week that he'll play with McIlroy in next month's Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event.

pga tour memorial tournament

20. Matt Fitzpatrick

After a so-so start to the 2024 season, Fitzpatrick seems close to putting everything together after a solo-fifth finish at the Players Championship. He had missed cuts at the Sony Open, Genesis Invitational and API before he bounced back at TPC Sawgrass. He is driving the ball better off the tee after removing a 4-gram weight from the grip of the club. Fitzpatrick told PGATour.com that he forgot the weight was even there.

pga tour memorial tournament

21. Max Homa

Homa came out of the gates well this season, tying for 14th at the Sentry and 13th at the Farmers Insurance Open. He also tied for eighth at the API. Homa has been wildly inconsistent off the tee, ranking 150th in driving accuracy (54.2%) and 115th in strokes gained: off the tee (-.117).

pga tour memorial tournament

22. Byeong Hun An

The South Korean golfer lost to Grayson Murray in a playoff at the Sony Open in Hawaii and has played consistently well since. He has three top-10s and five top-25s with only one missed cut in eight starts. After losing his PGA Tour card in 2021, he has climbed back to No. 42 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

pga tour memorial tournament

23. Jason Day

The former world No. 1 golfer played some of his best golf at the tour's biggest stops this season. He had three top-10s against elite fields at signature events, tying for 10th at the Sentry, for sixth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and had a solo ninth at the Genesis. He has finished 16th or better in two of his three starts at Memorial Park, where his elite short game is a weapon.

pga tour memorial tournament

24. Tom Hoge

Hoge has been a model of consistency this season, making the cut in nine of 10 starts with a pair of top-10 finishes. He performed well on the West Coast swing with a tie for sixth at Pebble Beach and solo eighth at the Genesis. His iron play continues to be among the best on tour -- he ranks second in shots gained: approach (1.234) and proximity (34 feet, 7 inches).

pga tour memorial tournament

25. Peter Malnati

Bucket hats off to the PGA Tour policy board director, who picked up his second career PGA Tour victory -- and his first in 3,058 days -- at the Valspar Championship. He earned a two-year exemption, his first invitation to the Masters and a spot in the remaining four signature events of the season. He jumped from 184th to 65th in the world after the win.

Just missed the top 25: Harris English , Tommy Fleetwood , Austin Eckroat , Jordan Spieth , Collin Morikawa , Christiaan Bezuidenhout , J.T. Poston , Erik van Rooyen , Eric Cole , Grayson Murray, Min Woo Lee

2013 Tal Memorial (Moscow, Russia)

pga tour memorial tournament

The 2013 Tal Memorial will begin exactly one week from today with a cadre of elite players. This tournament will continue the string of strong tournaments on display in recent months going all the way back to the London Classic, Tata Steel, Candidates Qualifier and the FIDE Grand Prix.

The field is a strong one with seven of the top ten players including Magnus Carlen , Vladimir Kramnik and World Champion Viswanathan Anand . The key matchup will be Carlsen-Anand since they are in preparations for the championships match in November. There is a nice mixture of ten players with many exciting battles on tap, but the field will be missing Levon Aronian of Armenia.

The Russian Chess Federation are the chief organizers while the direction consists of an organizing committee and panel of arbiters. The Chief Arbiter is IA Andrzej Filipowicz (Poland), the tournament director is Ilya Levitov .

The tournament has ten invited players and is a round robin with time controls of one hour and 40 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds for each move starting from move one.

Special rules

  • Participants are required to follow the tournament schedule strictly – in case a player is one hour or more late for the game he is forfeited (i.e. no “zero tolerance” rule!).
  • It is forbidden to offer a draw before and including move 40. Participants are required to comment on their games in the press center after each round unless, they have lost.
  • It is forbidden for participants to have their mobile devices working in the playing zone. All electronic devices should be handled to the chief arbiter during the game.

Nakamura wins Tal Memorial Blitz!

Hikaru Nakamura celebrated his new sponsorship with Silence Therapeutics by winning the blitz tournament at the Tal Memorial with 7/9. Viswanathan Anand came in second on 6.5/9. This novel idea was implemented a year ago as a welcome addition with the dual purpose of determining the pairing numbers.

Thus, the pairings have been set. Each player (in the order of their standing in the blitz) was able to choose their pairing number and Nakamura chose #5, Anand #2, Kramnik #7, Gelfand #3, Carlsen #4, Andreikin #1, Mamedyarov #6, Karjakin #8, Morozevich #10 and Caruana number #9.

Round #1 – Thursday, 13 June 2013

Dmitry Andreikin (2713) ½-½ Alexander Morozevich (2760) Viswanathan Anand (2786) 0-1 Fabiano Caruana (2774) Boris Gelfand (2755) ½-½ Sergey Karjaki n (2782) Magnus Carlsen (2864) 1-0 Vladimir Kramnik (2803) Hikaru Nakamura (2784) 0-1 Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753)

The first round of the Tal Memorial started quickly with three wins and a number of subthemes. While Andreikin was able to tame Morozevich’s pet Dragon, Caruana unfurled novel play against Anand’s anti-Marshall. Caruana insisted sacrifice something and donated a pawn for a pair of strong bishops and lasting initiative. Anand tried to return the pawn, but that seem to make things worse and the Italian’s bishops begin to assert authority. Combined with an active rook, Caruana invaded and started ravaging kingside pawns. Gelfand got nothing from his Catalan against Karjakin.

pga tour memorial tournament

Kramnik showed poor endgame technique against Carlsen. Photo by Etery Kublashvili.

The big matchup in today’s round was Carlsen-Kramnik the #1 and #3 players in the world. Carlsen trotted out the Trompowsky Attack which is typically not seen in top level play. Kramnik apparently was caught offguard and his position was a bit porous after 12…f5. The Norwegian traded off major pieces and Kramnik was left with a compromised pawn structure. Soon Carlsen was picking off material and ended up with two connected passed pawns which he converted.

pga tour memorial tournament

Nakamura-Mamedyarov went badly for white as Carlsen gives a watchful eye. Photo by Etery Kublashvili.

Nakamura won the blitz tournament, but this has been negated by an opening loss with white. After an opening disaster, the American was losing after 19…Nxf2 20.Kxf2 Bxh3 21.Kg1 Bxg3. Mamedyarov smelled blood and soon all of his pieces were in attack mode. With white’s pieces clumsily placed the exposed king was soon assailed.

Round #2 – Friday, 14 June 2013 Alexander Morozevich (2760) ½-½ Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) Vladimir Kramnik (2803) 0-1 Hikaru Nakamura (2784) Sergey Karjakin (2782) ½-½ Magnus Carlsen (2864) Fabiano Caruana (2774) 0-1 Boris Gelfand (2755) Dmitry Andreikin (2713) ½-½ Viswanathan Anand (2786)

World Champion Viswanathan Anand has taken some criticism from chess fans despite his strong of successful title defenses. The criticism is that he has not won a super-tournament in years and that he only plays to retain the title. What is ironic is that when Anand was winning many tournaments fans said he could not win matches. Today Anand got a win over Alexander Morozevich out of a slow positional Spanish game. Anand wrestled control of the game before the Russian tried to muck up the position into complications. Anand held steady and corralled the full point.

Fabiano Caruana has slowly ascended up the ranks of the FIDE Elo list and has now moved into the third position overtaking Vladimir Kramnik . His win over a beleaguered Magnus Carlsen may be sign of things to come in their budding rivalry. The world #1 is extremely difficult to prepare for so Caruana played practical chess and easily equalized. Carlsen sacked a pawn to gain activity, but Caruana simply held onto the pawn after untangling his pieces. Carlsen had an oversight in the endgame allowing a nice maneuver with 59…Re4! Caruana is now approaching 2800 on the live list.

Round #3 – Saturday, 15 June 2013 Viswanathan Anand (2786) 1-0 Alexander Morozevich (2760) Boris Gelfand (2755) ½-½ Dmitry Andreikin (2713) Magnus Carlsen (2864) 0-1 Fabiano Caruana (2774) Hikaru Nakamura (2784) 1-0 Sergey Karjakin (2782) Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) ½-½ Vladimir Kramnik (2803)

Standings (after three rounds)

1st-4th: Gelfand, Caruana, Mamedyarov, Nakamura, 2; 5th-7th: Andreikin, Anand, Carlsen, 1.5; 8th-9th: Karjakin, Morozevich, 1; 10th: Kramnik, .5.

Round #4 – Monday, 17 June 2013

Alexander Morozevich (2760) ½-½ Vladimir Kramnik (2803) Sergey Karjakin (2782) ½-½ Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) Fabiano Caruana (2774) 0-1 Hikaru Nakamura (2784) Dmitry Andreikin (2713) ½-½ Magnus Carlsen (2864) Viswanathan Anand (2786) ½-½ Boris Gelfand (2755)

Standings (after four rounds)

1st: Nakamura, 3; 2nd-3rd: Mamedyarov, Gelfand, 2.5; 4th-7th: Caruana, Andreikin, Anand, Carlsen, 2; 8th-9th: Karjakin, Morozevich, 1.5; 10th: Kramnik, 1.

When was the last (first ?) time we saw former (three-time) World Champion Kramnik at the foot of the table after 4 rounds of an event ?

I can’t even remember… maybe when he was eight years old.

If Nakamura can stay in form for the remainder of this super strong tournament, he might win this one. I take pleasure in seeing him on the leader board and hopes it ends well for him.

Ditto! 🙂 He has quieted the “haters” who always have something to say. When he lost in the first round to Mamedyarov, there were the comments about him being inconsistent and such.

Round #5 – Tuesday, 18 June 2013

Boris Gelfand (2755) 1-0 Alexander Morozevich (2760) Magnus Carlsen (2864) 1-0 Viswanathan Anand (2786) Hikaru Nakamura (2784) ½-½ Dmitry Andreikin (2713) Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) ½-½ Fabiano Caruana (2774) Vladimir Kramnik (2727) ½-½ Sergey Karjakin (2782)

Anand's loss to Carlsen may be a heavy psychological blow. Photo by Etery Kublashvili.

Anand’s loss to Carlsen may be a psychological blow before their match. Photo by Etery Kublashvili.

The Viswanathan Anand camp will certainly pour over today’s debacle against Magnus Carlsen as the World Champion was trounced in 29 moves. Magnus Carlsen took advantage of Anand’s passive play and pounded away in the center with f3, e4 and d5. With black on his heels hit was hit by a innocent-looking 25.Bh3! which was in actuality a heavy body blow. In the end, black was totally paralyzed. This has to be a tremendous boost for Carlsen who took the win in stride by saying that it’s good to let Anand know that he can beat him “every once in awhile.” Very well-placed words.

Boris Gelfand got a nice win over Alexander Morozevich out of a Modern Benoni. Morozevich sacrificed an exchange early on, but Gelfand returned it later for a lasting advantage. It was a rather clean win for the former championship contender and he joined Nakamura on the leader board.

Mamedyarov-Caruana was an interesting struggle that reached a dynamic equality while Kramnik-Karjakin and Nakamura-Andreikin added little to the discussions of chess. Kramnik is still on last position and many trivia buffs are wondering when was the last time the former champion had been in that position. Perhaps when he was eight years old. He will have a rest day after round six to regroup.

Standings (after five rounds)

1st-2nd: Nakamura, Gelfand, 3.5; 3rd-4th: Mamedyarov, Carlsen, 3; 5th-6th: Andreikin, Caruana, 2.5; 7th-8th: Karjakin, Anand, 2; 9th-10th: Morozevich, Kramnik, 1.5.

Game of the Day (Carlsen-Anand)

Round #6 – Wednesday, 19 June 2013

Alexander Morozevich (2760) ½-½ Sergey Karjakin (2782) Fabiano Caruana (2774) ½-½ Vladimir Kramnik (2803) Dmitry Andreikin (2713) ½-½ Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) Viswanathan Anand (2786) 0-1 Hikaru Nakamura (2784) Boris Gelfand (2755) ½-½ Magnus Carlsen (2864)

The chess world is buzzing. The reaction is not merely the World Champion going down for the the second consecutive time, but for Nakamura’s torrid pace. The American won yet another game pulling into sole possession of 1st place after dispatching Anand in a offbeat line of the Ruy Lopez. The newer generation has compared notes in taking the older generation out of known theory and a very interesting changing of the guard is upon us. While it would be foolish to discount the likes of Anand, Kramnik and Gelfand, it appears that the window is closing on their era. The rise of Carlsen, Nakamura, Karjakin, Caruana and a cadre of other players is sending out such a signal.

Is Anand in trouble?? Photo by Lennart Ootes.

In Anand-Nakamura , the the game started 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6!? and after 4. O-O Bg7 5. c3 a6 6. Bxc6 dxc6 entered a type of Exchange Ruy Lopez. However, Nakamura seized the initiative with bold play after 11…g5!? Anand reacted with a plan after 14.Be3, but afterwards Nakamura deemed it too slow. The assessment proved to be correct as black ended up with a dominating knight position on a compromised white pawn structure. Nakamura then weaved a net to trap the white knight forcing the champion to jettison his passed d-pawn to save it. After that black won a rather trivial ending.

In other action, Boris Gelfand pressed but could not crack Magnus Carlsen’s defenses. He was a bit better toward the end but the Norwegian held stead and remained on +1. Vladimir Kramnik remains in joint last as his Berlin didn’t bring the Russian any means of success although it appeared that Fabiano Caruana was under pressure after a fusillade of sacrifices. The game ended in a three-fold repetition. Interesting.

Morozevich-Karjakin was a lengthy affair that went exactly 100 moves and ended in a textbook draw rook ending. Andreikin-Mamedyarov was a Scotch that led to a very interesting unbalanced pawn structure. The game was still very complicate with two rooks and tricky knights roaming the board. The unbalanced made for a nice tactical ending. However both waded through the landmines and a peace treaty was signed.

Standings (after six rounds)

1st: Nakamura, 4.5; 2nd: Gelfand, 4; 3rd-4th: Mamedyarov, Carlsen, 3.5; 5th-6th: Andreikin, Caruana, 3; 7th: Karjakin, 2.5; 8th-10th: Kramnik, Anand, Morozevich, 2.

Round #7 – Friday, 21 June 2013

Magnus Carlsen (2864) ½-½ Alexander Morozevich (2760) Hikaru Nakamura (2784) 0-1 Boris Gelfand (2755) Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) ½-½ Viswanathan Anand (2786) Vladimir Kramnik (2803) 0-1 Dmitry Andreikin (2713) Sergey Karjakin (2782) ½-½ Fabiano Caruana (2774)

Despite his contemporaries failing miserably, Boris Gelfand beat Hikaru Nakamura and took possession of the lead with two rounds left. Both Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik are tied for last place in what has been quite a revelation. Gelfand trotted out the theoretical Sveshnikov and seemed to get the position he sought out of the opening.

In a complicated middlegame with pieces strewn about the board, Gelfand slowly wove a nice mating net. It was unique in that there were only two pieces participating in the attack. To stave off mate Nakamura had to either lose a piece or go into a lost pawn ending. Nice display by the veteran!

In the other decisive game Dmitri Andrekin beat Kramnik to keep the former champion mired in a downward spiral. The “Killer Catalan” has not yielded much success in this tournament and Andrekin got very active play as his black pieces dominated the board and ravaged the entire queenside. With three connected passed pawns on the queenside Andrekin had no problems collecting the point. Kramnik never had a chance in this game.

Standings (after seven rounds)

1st: Gelfand, 5; 2nd: Nakamura, 4.5; 3rd-5th: Mamedyarov, Andreikin, Carlsen, 4; 6th: Caruana, 3.5; 7th: Karjakin, 3; 8th-10th: Kramnik, Anand, Morozevich, 2.5.

Round #8 – Saturday, 22 June 2013

Alexander Morozevich (2760) 0-1 Fabiano Caruana (2774) Dmitry Andreikin (2713) ½-½ Sergey Karjakin (2782) Viswanathan Anand (2786) ½-½ Vladimir Kramnik (2803) Boris Gelfand (2755) ½-½ Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) Magnus Carlsen (2864) 1-0 Hikaru Nakamura (2784)

The race has tightened as Magnus Carlsen closed the distance by beating Hikaru Nakamura . In chess there has been situations where one player simply has the number of another… think Tal’s poor record against Viktor Korchnoi . Carlsen is now +6 over Nakamura and dominated today’s game before letting his advantage slip.

This highly-anticipated battle also had a lot riding on the result. Nakamura was still in contention and Carlsen was trying to manufacture a late rally. In this Carlsen played the Catalan and quickly got an advantage in space. After pushing the black pieces back into passivity, he missed 30.Bh3! and 31.Bxd7 which would totally destroy black’s defenses. Carlsen opted for 30.Re3 and Nakamura was able to sacrifice an exchange for compensation. However, the American made a few errors and Carlsen converted the exchange.

In the other decisive game, Morozevich-Caruana was fairly level and an unthinkable error occurred in the endgame phase. The Russian forgot about a passed pawn (after 38.g5??) and after 38…c3 there was no way of stopping pawn promotion and a quick mate to follow.

Caruana is out of the running, but with this win has soared to 2796 on the Live Rating list! He has supplanted Vladimir Kramnik who has had the worst performance in many years. He drew with Viswanathan Anand who is also having a poor showing. Gelfand still leads.

Standings (after eight rounds)

1st: Gelfand, 5.5; 2nd: Carlsen, 5; 3rd-6th: Mamedyarov, Andreikin, Nakamura, Caruana, 4.5; 7th: Karjakin, 3.5; 8th: Anand, 3; 9th-10th: Kramnik, Morozevich, 2.5.

Round #9 – Sunday, 23 June 2013

Hikaru Nakamura (2784) 0-1 Alexander Morozevich (2760) Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2753) ½-½ Magnus Carlsen (2864) Vladimir Kramnik (2803) ½-½ Boris Gelfand (2755) Sergey Karjakin (2782) ½-½ Viswanathan Anand (2786) Fabiano Caruana (2774) ½-½ Dmitry Andreikin (2713)

Final Standings

1st: Gelfand, 6; 2nd: Carlsen, 5.5; 3rd-5th: Mamedyarov, Andreikin, Caruana, 5; 6th: Nakamura, 4.5; 7th: Karjakin, 4; 8th-9th: Morozevich, Anand, 3.5; 10th: Kramnik, 3.

Good for gelfand to win such a strong tournament whilst he still has the strength and chance. The younger generation is definitely taking over.

5 reasons why we are expecting the A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup in Moscow

5 reasons why we are expecting the A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup in Moscow

Patience is running out, the situation is heating - there is little time left before the start of the A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup in Moscow. Planes with guests from different countries are already on the runways and are ready to take off. Meanwhile the tournament hosts are finishing their preparations, sleeking and holding the final rehearsal. By hook or by crook, spectators are trying to free their time on weekdays to get into the hall. Those who do not succeed are going to watch the competition online on the FIAS website. Meanwhile, we have found five reasons why we all are expecting the A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup in Moscow.

1. Best Sambo athletes from around the world

Annually the A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup attracts the strongest Sambo athletes from around the world like a magnet. Russian athletes do not have to go far because the tournament is held in their homeland. Numerous champions and winners of the world, continental tournaments and major international competitions are among the participants. Others get together not just to measure strength against these famous athletes, but to draw everyone’s attention by passing a difficult tournament distance. In 2014, Moscow prepares to host representatives from over 30 countries, who will compete for awards in 24 weight categories: 9 in male and female sports Sambo, and 6 in combat Sambo. The tournament will be supported by sponsors and partners of the International Sambo Federation, among which are Rosneft, Eni, Rosengineering, Summa Group, Almaz-Antey and Rossetti. Just recently, the FIAS website learned that the International Sambo Federation continues its long-standing cooperation with Rusengineering holding. Thus, a group of companies engaged in the construction of power industry objects, will sponsor the Moscow Sambo World Cup as well.

2. Excellent Organisation

The level of the tournament is determined not only by impressive participants, but its organisation as well. In this sense, long time ago the A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup proved itself as a model event, and various international competitions can follow its example. Logistics, accommodation, meals and other seemingly boring things are essential parts of any event. After all, due organisation of everyday life helps athletes stay focused on training and competition and concentrate on their performance, showing high-class Sambo.

3. Full Online Broadcast

The A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup in Moscow will be the tournament, which will continue the practice of online broadcast of the preliminary part of the competition from all the mats. In their comments on the FIAS and social networking websites many Sambo athletes expressed their opinion that there was a real need in it. However, there were some technical difficulties that did not allow us to broadcast the fights of high quality. Now the difficulties are overcome, and in February, you were able to follow the Sambo tournament in Belarus from all the mats. The A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup in Moscow will be broadcast live in full on the FIAS website on March 25 and 26.

4. Honouring Best Athletes of the Year

It is a tradition that the International Sambo Federation honours the best athletes of the last year at the A. Kharlampiev Memorial World Cup. Winners of the team event of the 2013 Sambo World Cup , whose names are published on the FIAS website, will receive their awards in the Druzhba Universal Sports Hall in Moscow. As in the previous year, the prize fund was 100 thousand U.S. dollars. In addition, we will continue the tradition to encourage those without whom Sambo could not sound so loud and become more and more popular every year, i.e. journalists and photographers. It is them who tell you about fights, introduce us to people from the Sambo world through interviews, delight you with TV programmes and online videos, as well as make fabulous pictures of Sambo athletes.

5. Opening Ceremony

Of course, we all look forward to the start of the fights and get ready to follow exciting fights on Sambo mats. However the event is created not only with sports components, but creative ones as well. Surely many Sambo fans still bear in mind the last year's show in the spirit of Soviet times dedicated to the anniversary of our favourite martial arts. This means that this year we should expect something spectacular. What exactly? You will find out very soon: follow the news on the FIAS website.
