Buying a Prepaid Sim Card for Spain in 2024

orange travel spain

Planning your trip to Spain and wondering what is the best way to stay connected and get data on your phone when traveling to Spain? You surely don’t want your Spain holiday to get ruined by outrageous roaming charges or slow overseas data roaming plans. This is a complete guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Spain.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a prepaid sim card in Spain, up to date prices as per March 2024, a comparison of the mobile internet providers, the best 4G/5G network, the best e-sim cards for Spain, info about EU roaming, my recommendation and the latest information about international sim cards for Spain.

Being a very experienced world traveler that has continuously been traveling the world now since 2012 I became an expert in finding the best sim cards for traveling abroad. On my trip around the world I have constantly been looking for ways to get connected.

My journey to visit every country in the world  brought me in 2022 for example to more than 60 countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries. Depending on the length of my trip to a country I buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival or get myself an e-sim cards on the internet.

I like to document all my travel tips and that is how writing sim card guides for destinations became a passion. You can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world: USA , Asia ,  Mexico , Costa Rica , Panama , Guatemala , Argentina , Peru , Colombia , Chile ,  South Africa , Vietnam , Hong Kong , Bali ,  New York , Istanbul , Paris , Rome , London , Qatar , Brazil, Turkey , Dubai  and many more.

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid sim card and e-sim card advice for your holiday destination. Bookmark me!

Are you flying in to  Madrid Airport or Barcelona Airport ? Then click on the links to get to know everything about buying a sim card on arrival at these Spain airports in 2024.

If you would like to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival in Spain then the airport is the most convenient place to get a sim card. However, sim card deals at airports are always slightly more expensive than in a phone store in the city center.

Why buying a sim card for Spain

Traveling becomes so much more convenient with an active data connection on your phone. It can be as easy as ordering a taxi on the streets, or finding a cool roof top bar or restaurant nearby. Getting directions from navigation apps is so normal, but with a working data connection suddenly becomes a challenge.

But what about emergencies or if you need to access your banking apps? The easiest way to stay connected is an e-sim card, but the best way to stay connected is buying a local prepaid sim card for Spain. Spain sim cards for tourists are not too expensive and it is worth investing a couple dollars to stay online.

Also don't rely on public WiFi, it is not everywhere available and begging for the WiFi password is annoying. Also keep in mind that using the internet on public WiFi is through an unsecured connection. The use of a VPN is recommended to protect your data!

If you don't like to swap your sim card for another one you can use an e-sim card. If your phone is not compatible for an e-sim card then you should look into getting a portable WiFi device. However, I am not a fan, so outdated! See my HONEST review of a pocket WiFi in my article about how to get WiFi abroad .

Buying a prepaid sim card in Spain is simple. Make sure you phone is unlocked, walk into any mobile internet store, ask for a prepaid sim card for Spain, put it in your phone, get it activated and within a couple minutes you are online.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Movistar prepaid sim card for Spain. They have the best 4G/5G network in Spain and have a prepaid sim card deal with 40 GB data for just €10 EUR and you can use the 5G network. A Vodafone sim card would be a second best.

These amazing prepaid sim card deals are only available in stores in Spain.

The cheapest way to stay connected is actually an e-sim card for Spain as they already start from $4.5 USD. With an e-sim card you arrive prepared and have data on your phone as soon as the plane lands. Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Spain e-sim card from either  Airalo ,  SimOptions  or  Nomad .

E-sim cards are simply much more convenient than local prepaid sim cards as you arrange everything online. For more info check out my list of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Spain in 2024 .

Spain sim cards and free EU roaming

Spain prepaid sim cards in general include free data roaming in the EU. Sometimes it is capped, so always ask when buying a prepaid sim card in Spain. Free EU roaming means the sim card you buy in Madrid or Barcelona can also be used in Paris, Rome or even Stockholm. Free EU roaming on Spain sim cards is great for those that arrive in Spain and travel to more countries in Europe on the same trip.

Read more on free EU data roaming in my article with everything you need to know about buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Europe .

There are actually a couple sim cards for Europe that are great value and you can buy them directly online. Click on the link for a list of the best sim cards for Europe travel .

Mobile internet providers in Spain

Spain has 4 big mobile internet providers that all sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. Orange and Vodafone are the two well known European brands and then there is also Movistar and Mas Movil. Mas Movil operates in Spain under the name Yoigo and phone stores around Spain are called Yoigo, Mas Movil is the mother company.

All mobile internet providers sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. However, you can only get physical prepaid sim cards in stores in Spain. Es-sim cards for tourists are not available, but you can order e-sim cards for Spain on the internet.

Where to buy a sim card for Spain

At any international airport you will find either mobile internet provider stores or book shops selling prepaid sim cards for Spain. If I don't have an e-sim yet looking for a sim card shop is one of the first things I do on arrival. But be aware that buying a sim card at the airport is always more expensive than in the city center.

Buying a sim card at Barcelona Airport

At Barcelona Airport you can find a couple different Spain sim card deals. An Orange sim card for €15 is the best buy and will give you 9 GB data all over Europe and €5 calling credit. For more info on sim cards at Barcelona Airport check out the link above.

Buying a sim card at Madrid Airport

When flying to Madrid Airport you can buy more or less the same Spain sim card deals as at Barcelona Airport. an Orange sim card for traveling in Spain and Europe for €20 with 10 GB data + €10 calling credit. Check the link above for more info about buying a sim card Madrid Airport.

Official phone stores city center

Once you are settled in your hotel simply search for your preferred Spain sim card provider in Google Maps. Mobile phone shops are mostly always clustered in the city center. In Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Madrid it is very easy to find a phone store near your hotel, even in Ibiza and Mallorca there are multiple places that sell Spain sim cards for tourists as well as on the airport of Ibiza and Mallorca.

Convenience stores

You can also buy prepaid sim card at the bigger gas stations and convenience stores. But there won't be any service and you will have to activate the sim card yourself. Not recommended for tourists unless you know what you are doing.

Getting connected when traveling to Spain was never as easy as in 2024. There are multiple e-sim card websites that offer e-sim cards for Spain. Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Spain e-sim card from either  Airalo ,  SimOptions  or  Nomad .

For more detailed info check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Spain in 2024 .

SimOptions also sells international physical prepaid sim cards for Spain . These will be delivered to your home address before your trip. Local prepaid sim cards can NOT be ordered online, these prepaid sim cards for tourists are only available in the stores in Spain.

Prices prepaid sim cards in Spain in 2024

Prices for prepaid sim cards in Spain are pretty good. All the Spain mobile internet providers are constantly publishing offers. All the below prices are up to date as per March 2024. Prices are in Euros: $1 USD = €0.92 EUR and €1 EUR = $1.09 USD.

Movistar prepaid sim card

movistar spain prepaid sim card plans 2024

The Movistar prepaid sim card deals have become A LOT BETTER in 2024. The above offers are great Spain prepaid sim card deals and the Movistar prepaid sim cards are 5G ready. Movistar does NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists, only physical sim cards are available for tourists. For more info check the  Movistar  website.

Vodafone prepaid sim card

vodafone spain prepaid sim card plans 2024

Also Vodafone updated their prepaid sim prices for 2024 and we all benefit! Great news: Vodafone allows prepaid sim card costumers to use 5G network.

For €10 EUR you get 50 GB data. All the prepaid sim card packages offer EU roaming, but EU data roaming is limited to 19 GB outside of Spain. Unfortunately in Vodafone stores in Spain they only sell physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are NOT available for tourists. For more info and check the Vodafone Spain website.

Orange prepaid sim card

orange spain prepaid sim card plans 2024

These are the latest Orange Spain prepaid sim card plans available for tourists. They have 3 different data packages available. Free EU roaming is included in the above data packages of Orange Spain and packages are valid for 4 weeks.

A little downside of an Orange Spain prepaid sim card is that they are NOT 5G ready, max speed is 4G/LTE. Orange does NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists, only physical prepaid sim cards are available in Orange stores. Check the  Orange website for more info.

Yoigo prepaid sim card

yoigo prepaid sim card prices

Yoigo is a brand of Mas Movil and also operates on the Mas Movil mobile data network.

Their data packages for prepaid sim cards are smaller than all the other mobile internet providers. Yoigo does NOT provide e-sim cards for prepaid users. For more info check the Yoigo  website.

Best 4G/5G mobile data network in Spain in 2024

It is not all about prices for prepaid sim card plans when determining the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Spain. Another important ranking factor is the 4G/5G network in Spain. We are already in 2024, we don't want to get stuck with slow 3G.

Is there 5G in Spain?

Yes, there is 5G in Spain and as of March 2024 it is widespread around the country. Pretty much all the tourist destinations and amazing places to visit are covered with a 5G signal.

A bummer is that most of the Spain mobile internet providers still do not offer 5G data speed for prepaid sim cards. The only who allows 5G for prepaid sim cards in Spain is Vodafone. For more detailed 4G/5G coverage maps of Spain , check the link.

Movistar Spain 4G/5G network map

movistar 4g 5g network coverage map spain 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Spain in 2024.

When comparing the above Spain 4G/5G network coverage maps from all mobile internet providers in Spain we can see that all of them have an excellent 4G/5G network all around the country. Only small details make the difference.

Vodafone claims on their website to have won prices for the best 5G network in Spain, but Traveltomtom's conlcusion after comparing the network coverage maps of Orange, Mas Movil, Movistar and Vodafone is that Movistar has a the most extensive mobile data network and the  best 4G/5G network coverage in Spain in 2024.

That said, all other mobile internet providers have great 4G/5G network coverage in all tourist destinations in Spain.

Best sim card for Spain in 2024

E-sim cards for Spain are an amazingly easy way to get connected when traveling to Spain in 2024 and there are some great e-sim card deals. But when comparing e-sim cards for Spain with local prepaid sim cards in Spain then it is an easy conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are much cheaper.

Downside is that you need to go to a phone store in Spain on arrival. With an e-sim card you are online as soon as the plane lands. Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Spain e-sim card from either  Airalo ,  SimOptions  or  Nomad .

Local prepaid sim cards for tourists are cheap in Spain and for €10 EUR you can already get 50 GB data. Another great thing about Spain prepaid sim cards is that they allow free EU roaming, although most sim cards are capped at around 15 - 20 GB data. Always ask about EU roaming limitation when buying a prepaid sim card in Spain.

When comparing the mobile internet operators in Spain we can see that for 2024 there is very little difference between Mas Movil/Yoigo, Movistar, Vodafone and Orange. All providers have amazing prepaid sim card plans for tourists with a lot of data and all the providers have an excellent 4G/5G mobile data network.

It is a close call between Movistar and Vodafone but Traveltomtom rates Movistar as the best prepaid sim card for Spain in 2024.

Landing on either Barcelona Airport or Madrid Airport you might wanna buy a prepaid sim card for Spain on arrival. It is pricey, but click on the link to read everything about it.

Ratings and Reviews

Buying only.

The app is OK. It’s mediocre and incomplete. I bought an eSIM through the website, then added that account to this app. The eSIM I added before my trip worked flawlessly upon arriving, as did my spouse’s. However, inside this app, you can buy new eSIM cards or supposedly add money to your existing account, but the basic functionality of seeing how much data and minutes you have left on your account at the moment is notably and painfully absent from this app. Two stars.

Do Not Recommend - eSIM did not work

I have an iPhone 15 pro max. Buying an eSIM and installing it was easy. However, upon arriving to Spain, the eSIM did not work! I contacted customer support many times both in English and in Spanish and they claim different issues every time. I ensure to follow the instructions and active my eSIM upon arrival to Europe and they claim it will work once I get to my final destination. Then, they claimed I never bought an eSIM. I showed them my receipt and I can see my bank statement shows the charge but they refuse to acknowledged my transaction and will not issue a refund. They keep insisting to buy a new eSIM or to “recharge” to resolve my issue. I would not recommend Orange since I’ve been left in another country without service. Their customer service is the worst to deal with. Constantly, telling me to contact different numbers and all had similar conversations with no results. I had to fall back to my primary carrier (which I didn’t want to do since they have bad international rate).

High hopes for ESim….MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT

I DO NOT RECOMMEND. I purchased multiple European All Inclusive Holiday Zen packages. The installation was not the easiest, the instructions were dated and no help was to be found online unfortunately. Once installed (something you can’t do before landing) we NEVER could get the cellular data to work, so no maps, internet, iMessages, access to online files where itinerary are, etc. while in a foreign county. The customer help is mostly automated and only available though email 8am-8pm, which is impossible to deal with when touring without cellular. When they finally sent a reply email, hours later, it was cookie cutter facts and didn’t apply to the settings for our iPhone 13s even though I told them what model & iOS I had. DO NOT recommend purchasing unless you only want a European phone number to call each other when lost. Still working with Orange to see if compensation is possible…not hopeful.

Orange holiday europe sim card review | i test this popular tourist-focused data plan.

A hands-on review of the popular tourist-focused data plan from Orange

phones and technology

orange travel spain

I recently traveled to France for two weeks so I needed fast and reliable mobile data for my phone. But I didn’t want to spend a fortune using my current provider’s International Data plan which would have cost me $120 for two weeks (for spotty service and low data limits).

After a bit of research, I came across the Orange Holiday Europe SIM prepaid data plan that looked promising so I wanted to test it out and share my thoughts.

In this Orange Holiday Europe review, I’ll talk about my personal experience with this prepaid SIM card, things to consider before buying the Orange Holiday Europe plan, general tips about prepaid data plans in France/Europe, and I’ll list some alternatives you might also want to consider.

Overview Of The Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid Data Plan

My thoughts after using the Orange Holiday Europe SIM card while traveling in Europe

The Orange Holiday Europe is a prepaid data plan designed for tourists who are visiting Europe and it gives users high-speed data in every European country. As an added bonus, Orange is the 11th largest mobile operator in the world and the 4th largest in Europe so they have a robust network and coverage.

The Orange Holiday Europe plan is also designed to be super user-friendly so there is no registration needed—simply install the SIM card into your unlocked phone and it automatically connects to a local mobile provider anywhere in Europe.

The Orange Holiday Europe plan costs around $50 and it gives you 20GB of mobile data (although sometimes they have a special where you get 30GB). The main downside is that the data is only valid for 14 days—although you’re able to re-up the plan for an additional 14 days for around $30.

The Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid plan comes as both an Orange Holiday physical SIM version and an Orange Holiday eSIM version . I highly recommend the eSIM version if your phone is eSIM compatible (the price and service are the same but you don’t have to pay for shipping and it’s delivered instantly via email).

My Experience Using The Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM

orange travel spain

Ok, let’s get into my personal review of the Orange Holiday Europe plan. I’ve broken this down into multiple sections.

Purchase and Shipping

I got my Orange Holiday Europe SIM from SimOptions and had it shipped to me before I departed. I believe many Orange retail locations throughout Europe sell this same plan but that requires you to hunt down a store—I wanted data as soon as I landed.

I believe delivery was an extra $7 and it took a few days to arrive (so plan ahead).

NOTE: I highly recommend buying the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM if your phone is compatible because you get free, instant delivery via email so you save yourself some time and money. You also don’t have to remove your current provider’s SIM card (i.e. you can use your new eSIM while still using your current plan) so you can keep your old number, etc.

Installation (For The Physical SIM Card Version)

Installing the SIM card is simple.

Just pop out your old SIM and replace it with the Orange SIM card. The kit doesn’t come with a SIM extraction tool so you’ll want to bring a small paperclip so you can pop the SIM slot open.

Keep your original SIM card somewhere safe because you’ll need to reinstall it to get your old service back.

IMPORTANT: Don’t install the SIM until you’re in Europe. The service automatically activates when the SIM is installed so installing it early will count against your 14-day service period.

Orange Holiday SIM Activation

Activation was super simple.

My iPhone automatically recognized the new SIM and the service activated itself as soon as I installed the SIM card.

The entire process took about 2-3 minutes.

If your phone doesn’t automatically connect, you may have to manually enter the following APN settings into your phone:

  • Access Point Name (or APN): orange
  • User name: orange
  • Password: orange

I received a few text messages (in French) from Orange welcoming me and asking to register my card—you can ignore those if you don’t plan on using the service for more than 14 days. You can register your Orange SIM at https://travel.orange.com/en/sim-card-registration/

I believe these texts also tell you what your new French phone number is so write that down if you plan on making/receiving calls.

Speed, Coverage, and Overall Performance

On this trip, I spent most of my time in Paris, on a 3.5-hour train ride to the South of France, and in the South of France (mainly Marsailles but also on a few day trips in the region).

Overall my service was great. I got 4G/LTE just about everywhere I went and it was very rare for me to not have any signal (In fact, I can’t remember ever not having a signal).

I mostly used Google Maps/Google, Instagram, email, some Spotify streaming, and some other basic data usage. 20GB is a solid amount of data for two weeks so most people won’t hit that cap unless they’re doing a lot of video streaming (so limit your multi-hour TikTok sessions while on data).

Other Things I Liked About My Orange Holiday Europe Plan

First, Orange is a huge company so they have a great network with extensive EU-wide coverage.

And unlike a lot of data plans, the Orange Holiday Europe plan allows data tethering so I could use my phone as a hotspot for my laptop. This came in handy when my Airbnb’s wifi stopped working and when I wanted to send a few emails/surf the web while I was on the train.

Additionally, unlike a lot of prepaid data plans, the Orange Holiday Europe plan comes with a French phone number so users can make/receive phone calls and texts (you get unlimited calls and texts in Europe and 120 minutes of worldwide calling plus worldwide 1k texts). This can come in handy if you need to make restaurant reservations or if you need to call your Airbnb host, hotel, etc.

I also liked the convenience of pre-purchasing the plan so I didn’t have to waste time finding an Orange store and dealing with salespeople (I’d rather spend my time finding the best croissants).

Considerations Before Buying The Orange Holiday Europe SIM

Buying the Orange Holiday Europe SIM plan is more expensive than waiting to buy a local SIM card once you arrive in Europe. For reference, you’ll typically pay about $30 for 20GB of data via a local SIM card.

On the other hand, pre-buying Orange Holiday Europe plans means you’ll have data as soon as you land and you won’t have to waste time trying to track down a SIM card retailer. Personally, I don’t mind paying a little extra for the convenience.

However, if you’re traveling for more than a few weeks then you’re probably better off buying a local SIM card since I believe you can only use this card for a max of 28 days.

Who Should and Shouldn’t Buy The Orange Holiday Europe Plan

Not sure if the Orange Holiday Europe plan is for you? Maybe this will help:

Who Should Buy The Orange Holiday Europe Plan

  • Travelers Who Value Convenience: Just activate the plan and you’re online. It’s super easy. No need to find a mobile retailer, no need to speak to anyone, no need to register your SIM or submit your passport, no need to be without data, etc.

Who Shouldn’t Buy The Orange Holiday Europe Plan

  • Ultra-Budget Travelers: If you’re on a super tight budget then you can find other plans that are cheaper if you don’t mind spending time to track them down. You might also want to consider the cheaper Orange Holiday Zen SIM and Orange Holiday Zen eSIM plans that are $30 and have 10-15GB of data.
  • Long-Term Travelers: It ends up being quite a bit cheaper to buy a local SIM card if you’re traveling for more than around three to four weeks.
  • Minimal Data Users: Don’t need 20+ GB of data? Then look at the cheaper Orange Holiday Zen SIM and Orange Holiday Zen eSIM plans that are $30 for 10-15GB of data.

Orange Holiday Europe SIM Alternatives

Ok, let’s take a look at a few other SIM and SIM card options you might want to check out:

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM: $29.90

Orange Holiday Zen eSIM | Best eSIM For Visiting Europe

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  15GB
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  14 day
  • Data tethering allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM card comes with a French phone number

The Orange Holiday Zen plan is very similar to the Orange Holiday Europe plan but it has less data and it’s cheaper. This is a great option for users who don’t use a lot of data.

O2 GO CARD ESIM: $24.90

orange travel spain

  • Price:  $24.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  10GB
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Includes $2 of credit to make calls within Europe
  • Texts/SMS:  Includes $2 of credit to send/receive texts within Europe
  • Credit validity:  30 day
  • This eSIM card comes with a Czech phone number

The O2 Go Card Plan is on the O2 mobile network (the largest mobile network in the UK) so the service quality will be good.

And while it’s slightly cheaper than the Orange Holiday Zen plan, you get less mobile data and you don’t get the benefit of any international calls/texts—you also get a very limited amount of EU calls/texts.

SMART COMFORT X ESIM: $17.90

orange travel spain

  • Price:  $17.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  5GB
  • Calls:  None
  • Texts/SMS:  None
  • Credit validity:  30 day

The Smart Comfort X eSIM is a budget data-only eSIM plan option that gives you 5GB of data but no calls or texts (you can still send iMessage if you’re sending messages between iPhones and make calls/texts via WhatsApp, etc).

Smart Comfort X eSIM is also what’s considered an “international eSIM” so it’s not backed by a specific data provider (i.e Orange, O2, etc.). That means it will connect to a specific partner provider in each country—for example, France (Bouygues), Germany (O2), Italy (WIND), Spain (Telefonica), etc.

Because of its limited data limits, the Smart Comfort X eSIM plan is best for light data users.

THREE UK PAYG AIO15

Three UK is another large European mobile carrier and their  PAYG AIO15  plan is a good value for people who don’t need the 20GB offered by the Orange Holiday Europe plan. I like how the plan has a validity period of 30 days so it’s good for longer trips.

Plan Specs:

  • PRICE:  $30
  • DATA:  10GB
  • CALLS:  Unlimted in Europe
  • TEXT:  Unlimted in Europe
  • USED AS A MOBILE HOTSPOT?:  No
  • CREDIT VALID FOR:  30 Days

BOUYGUES TELECOM VACATION PREPAID PLAN

The  Bouygues Telecom Vacation Prepaid Plan  is very similar to the Orange Holiday Zen but the Bouygues plan must be activated in France—so that’s a huge drawback if France isn’t your first destination.

  • PRICE:  $50
  • DATA:  20GB
  • USED AS MOBILE HOTSPOT?:  NO
  • Must be activated in France but can be used anywhere in the EU.

Note:  SimOptions.com  has other cards for sale but these are the best options/deals.

Spain Greenlights Merger of Orange and MasMovil, Minister Says

Reuters

MADRID (Reuters) -Spain's government has authorised a merger of French mobile operator Orange's Spanish business and its rival MasMovil, Digital Transformation Minister Jose Luis Escriva said on Tuesday, the last formal step after an EU approval last month.

An accompanying industrial plan for the resulting entity that will become Spain's biggest operator with more than 30 million mobile customers, "is truly ambitious", with strong investments in fixed and mobile infrastructure, Escriva told a news conference.

The proposed merger of Spain's second and fourth-largest telecoms providers had already secured antitrust clearance from the European Union in February.

Orange had earlier said that the deal, which has an enterprise value of about 18.6 billion euros ($20.33 billion), was expected to be completed by the end of the quarter.

MasMovil will divest spectrum across three frequency spectrum bands to Romania's Digi, the largest mobile virtual network operator in Spain, so it can build its own mobile network.

Spanish Government Approves Orange and MásMóvil Merger

orange travel spain

The Spanish Government has given the green light to the merger between Orange and MásMóvil. The approval, announced following a cabinet meeting, marks a pivotal step towards the creation of a new market leader expected to commence operations by the fourth quarter of this year.

The decision  comes on the heels of the European Commission’s recent clearance of the €18.6 billion merger, further solidifying the path for the consolidation of these telecom giants. Speaking on the approval, José Luis Escrivá, the minister of Digital Transformation, emphasized the potential benefits for consumers, stating, “[With the approval] we will guarantee better services for consumers.”

However, the government’s approval comes with conditions, particularly focusing on ensuring long-term investments from both Orange and MásMóvil. Escrivá highlighted this aspect, underlining the commitment required from the merging entities to bolster infrastructure and service offerings.

Upon completion, the merger is anticipated to give rise to the largest telecommunications operator in Spain. Luis Escrivá revealed staggering figures, indicating that the combined entity would boast over 30 million mobile customers, in addition to serving more than 7 million broadband customers and over 2 million pay-TV subscribers.

This consolidation is expected to have far-reaching implications, not only in terms of market dominance but also in shaping the competitive landscape and influencing the quality and availability of telecommunications services across Spain. The creation of a formidable player with extensive reach and resources is likely to trigger reactions from competitors and regulatory bodies alike.

While the approval marks a significant milestone in the merger process, it also sets the stage for a period of transition and integration, wherein the newly formed entity will need to navigate regulatory requirements, operational challenges, and strategic decisions to leverage its position as the market leader effectively.

Spain greenlights merger of Orange and MasMovil, minister says

An accompanying industrial plan for the resulting entity that will become Spain's biggest operator with more than 30 million mobile customers, "is truly ambitious", with strong investments in fixed and mobile infrastructure, Escriva told a news conference.

The proposed merger of Spain's second and fourth-largest telecoms providers had already secured antitrust clearance from the European Union in February.

Orange had earlier said that the deal, which has an enterprise value of about 18.6 billion euros ($20.33 billion), was expected to be completed by the end of the quarter.

MasMovil will divest spectrum across three frequency spectrum bands to Romania's Digi D DIGI , the largest mobile virtual network operator in Spain, so it can build its own mobile network.
