movie cruise ship flips over

Just before New Year's Eve, the ocean liner S.S. Poseidon hits choppy weather at sea. On the bridge, Capt. Harrison argues with Linarcos, the representative of the consortium that now owns the ship, who is insisting that they carry on without ballast in order to make up lost time. When young Robin Shelby bursts into the cabin, he impresses Harrison with his fascination with and knowledge of the ship, but is ushered out to await a safer moment to take his tour of the bridge. In addition to Robin and his eighteen-year-old sister Susan, the ship's passengers include police detective Mike Rogo and his wife Linda, meek haberdasher James Martin, older Jewish couple Manny and Belle Rosen and Reverend Scott, an unorthodox, rebellious clergyman who has been banished to Africa by his church. While the passengers endure the turbulent seas, Harrison orders that they take on ballast but is forced to back down after Linarcos threatens to have him removed from command. In the bar, singer Nonnie Parry rehearses her songs, watched appreciatively by a British waiter named Acres. Later, Scott delivers a guest sermon to the ship's passengers, preaching that God is not concerned with individuals, so everyone must have the tenacity and courage to solve his own problems. That night is New Year's Eve, and the passengers prepare for the ballroom gala. Linda, a former prostitute, worries that others disdain her, and when Mike tries to calm her, they spar briefly, then embrace. At dinner, while Belle worries that Martin is lonely and urges him to find someone to marry, Susan develops a crush on Scott. On the deck, meanwhile, Harrison learns of a subsea earthquake that is causing heavy swells nearby, and he and his crew wait tensely. Just as midnight strikes and the ballroom erupts in celebration, an enormous wall of water slams into the ship. The force of the water turns the Poseidon onto its side and then, as everyone and everything inside the ship slides downward, the ship flips completely over. In the ballroom, passengers are flung against the walls and slide down the floors to the ceiling, which is now below them. Many people are killed or crushed under furniture, while others hang for their lives from the tables, which were bolted into the floor. In the ensuing silence, the survivors rouse and search for their loved ones. Manny and Belle find each other, as do Linda and Mike. Scott tries to help the wounded and Nonnie cradles the dead body of her beloved brother, as the purser announces that they must stay where they are and await help. When Susan, trapped on a table, yells for help, Scott organizes the men to form a net out of a curtain and urges the terrified teenager to jump. After Susan lands safely in the net, Acres, who sits on a high platform with an injured leg, also asks to jump. Martin and Scott determine, however, that because the boat is now upside down, any rescue team will have to come from above them through the hull, thus everyone is safer joining Acres at his higher vantage point. Robin, who has amassed copious data about the ship, informs them that the hull is thinnest near the propeller shaft, prompting Scott to announce that everyone must make their way toward the shaft. Although Mike is reluctant to trust a child and chafes at Scott's officiousness, Linda insists that they go along. Scott leads some men in righting the huge, ornamental Christmas tree, which has a strong inner skeleton that can act as a ladder, and Acres anchors it from above. After the women remove their skirts, Robin, Susan, Linda and Mike climb the tree. Martin tries to convince the others to come along, but only Belle, Manny and Nonnie agree, although Belle is convinced she is too heavy to make it, and Nonnie is in mild shock. Before following Martin up the tree, Scott urges the ship's chaplain to join them, but the older man feels he must remain to comfort the others. Scott addresses them all, stating that climbing represents their only chance to escape drowning as the ship continues to sink, but they side with the purser and refuse to leave. Just as Scott reaches the top of the tree, an explosion rocks the ballroom and water rushes in. Panicked, everyone runs for the tree at once, and their combined weight topples it, trapping them below. With no other choice, Scott closes the door on their cries for help. The party of ten crosses the galley to a fire door, and although Mike is fearful of a flash fire on the other side, Scott pushes through and leads them toward a passageway, which Acres identifies as running the full length of the ship to the engine room. Looking for an entrance to the passageway, the group climbs broken, upside-down stairways. As they struggle to stay steps ahead of the water and debris rushing at them, each group member's strengths and weaknesses are highlighted, with Mike constantly chafing at Scott's domineering attitude, and Nonnie nearly collapsing with despair. When they find the entrance to the passageway sealed, Acres recalls that there is a duct into the central air shaft. They crawl through the shaft to its end, where Scott barely manages to open the door before water floods in. The shaft opens onto a vertical tube housing a steep ladder leading to higher doors. After Scott confirms that the next door can be opened, each climbs up precariously. During another explosion, Acres falls to his death, after which Nonnie freezes in fear and Martin must talk her into continuing to climb. The door leads to a deck of the ship, where they are thrilled to spot other survivors being led forward by the ship's doctor. Scott, however, informs the doctor that he is going the wrong way, toward the section of the ship that is sinking fastest. Despite the doctor's certainty that he is correct, Scott tries urgently to convince the others that the engine room is the only way out. When Scott blames Mike for failing to save Acres, Mike explodes, asking if Scott thinks he is God himself. After Martin breaks up the fight between Scott and Mike, Scott determines to go ahead to the engine room by himself to ensure that it is accessible, with Mike vowing to follow the doctor if Scott does not return in fifteen minutes. While Susan follows Scott, the others wander the deck looking for supplies. Belle tells Manny she hopes the children survive, and hands him her necklace, the Hebrew letter chai, meaning life. As Scott finds a hatch and climbs into it, cautioning Susan to return to the others if he is not back within minutes, Martin urges Nonnie to be strong, and Robin wanders into a bathroom. When Scott fails to reappear, Mike prepares to leave, but as Manny and Martin argue with him, Scott returns with the news that he has discovered the engine room. Robin cannot be found, however, and as another explosion rocks the deck, Scott searches for the boy. Locating him, he grabs Robin and reaches the hatch just moments before the water rises above their necks. The engine room is now one deck below them, and although climbing downward is frightening, they all do so, only to find the corridor now under water. Scott orders them to swim the short corridor, and dives in to lead the way. When the rope tied around his waist goes slack, Belle, a former champion swimmer, hurls herself in to rescue him. Underwater, she frees Scott from the debris pinning him down, and they surface in the engine room. Moments later, however, she suffers a heart attack and dies in his arms. Mike has followed and now Scott demands that he round up the others, revealing nothing about Belle. Nonnie, who cannot swim, holds on to Martin, and all reach the engine room safely. There, Manny weeps while holding his beloved wife, and although he does not want to go on, Scott convinces him that dying will only render Belle's death meaningless. The engine room is racked by fires, but Scott points out that the shattered machinery forms a catwalk on which they can climb to the propeller shaft. They all climb until a blast knocks Linda into the flames. Mike howls in grief, blaming Scott for taking from him the only thing he has ever loved. Another explosion sends plumes of steam up, blocking the propeller shaft door. Exhausted, Scott rails against God, asking how many more sacrifices He will demand. Leaping over the flames to jump onto the red valve that controls the steam pressure, Scott grabs the valve, which is directly under the scalding steam, and tortuously twists the valve closed yelling "You want another life, then take me." Knowing that he has no way back, Scott encourages the others to go on, then lets go of the valve and drops to his death. Susan threatens to jump, but Martin holds her back, then taunts Mike into leading them. The steam now subsided, Mike is able to pull the door open, and the group hammers on the thin hull. An answering bang is heard, and Mike realizes that Scott was right all along. The rescuers use blowtorches to cut a hole in the hull and escort the group, tattered and stunned, to safety.

The Poseidon Adventure

So what resolution should we make for the new year? It's to let God know that you have the guts and the will to do it alone. Resolve to fight for yourselves, and for others, for those you love. And that part of God within you will be fighting with you all the way. - Reverend Frank Scott
I'm going next. So if ole' fat ass gets stuck, I won't get stuck behind her. - Linda Rogo
We're sinking and nothings going to keep us from drowning. - Linda Rogo
Keep moving. - Mike Rogo
For God's sake, Reverend, what you're doing is suicide. - Purser
We're cut off from the rest of the world. They can't get to us. Maybe we can get to them. You've said enough, now get out of the way. - Reverend Frank Scott
Pray for us but don't do this. - Purser
Climbing to another deck will kill you all. - Purser
And sitting on our butts is not going to help us either. Maybe by climbing out of here we can save ourselves. If you've got any sense you'll come along with us. - Reverend Frank Scott
If you don't come with us, her death is meaningless - Reverend Frank Scott

Most of the external shots of the Poseidon were shot using a model built from the original blueprints of the Queen Mary. The model is on display at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum at the Los Angeles harbor. The real Queen Mary is located just a few miles away in Long Beach.

Shot in sequence, taking advantage of the fact that the principals became dirtier and more tattered and suffered injuries - some real and some artificial - as they progressed.

Some of the pre-capsize sequences were shot aboard the Queen Mary, including the opening storm sequence, the pre-disaster scenes in the staterooms and hallways, the scenes above decks, and an early scene in the engine room.

In the scene in which Rev. Scott rescues Robin, the set was built on tracks which would slowly lower the inclined set into a large water tank. The set was supposed to stop moving once the set was half-submerged, but for some reason it continued until the camera crew was underwater. The film magazine was rushed to the lab, where immediate processing showed the film was undamaged.

The original script called for Rev. Scott to send Mrs. Rosen on her underwater mission, and for her to be trapped and need rescuing by him. Gene Hackman decided that his character would never ask her to do this, and suggested their characters' situations be reversed. Director Ronald Neame agreed, and they persuaded Shelley Winters that this was indeed better for her character.

The film begins with the following written statement: "At midnight on New Year's Eve, the S.S. Poseidon , enroute [sic] from New York to Athens, met with disaster and was lost. There were only a handful of survivors. This is their story...." The closing credits include the following written statement: "Portions of this picture filmed aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, with the cooperation of the City of Long Beach, California Museum of the Sea Foundation, Specialty Queen Mary Corporation and P.S.A. Hotels, Inc."        Paul Gallico's novel The Poseidon Adventure was published in 1969. As noted in studio press materials, the story was inspired by a trip he took on the R.M.S. Queen Mary ocean liner in 1937, during which the ship turned on its side in high waves. Filmfacts details the extensive research Gallico carried out to ensure that the disaster scenario was realistic and feasible. The film follows the same basic story of the novel, tracing a charismatic, rebellious preacher as he leads survivors of an overturned ocean liner toward the ship's hull. Unlike the film, however, the book includes additional characters, the character of "Robin Shelby" dies, "Reverend Scott" denounces God and commits suicide, and "Susan Shelby" is raped.        On March 26, 1969, Hollywood Reporter reported that Avco Embassy had purchased the novel. As noted in a June 1969 Daily Variety news item, producer Irwin Allen's production company, Kent Productions, signed a deal with Avco Embassy to produce three films, including The Poseidon Adventure . A June 24, 1969 Hollywood Reporter news item announced that the start of preproduction work and a finished script were due by October 1969. Although Sidney Marshall was credited as a script and story editor in a February 1970 Hollywood Reporter news item, he is listed onscreen as associate producer.        In July 1971, Hollywood Reporter announced that Allen would produce the film in collaboration with Twentieth Century-Fox rather than Avco Embassy. Allen noted in a December 1972 Variety article that he had first approached Fox with the idea of the film, turning to Avco after Fox turned him down. However, when Avco's new president canceled the production, Allen returned to Fox. An AMC documentary on the making of The Poseidon Adventure , included as extra material on the 2006 special edition DVD release, stated that the studio, hoping to cut costs, pulled out of the production just weeks before shooting began. Allen immediately persuaded Fox to provide half of the $5 million budget, then enlisted his friends Sherrill Corwin and Steve Broidy to match Fox's contribution. The film's first script was written by Wendell Mayes, but in November 1971, Hollywood trade papers noted that Stirling Silliphant had been hired as a writer. While the sources stated that Silliphant would rewrite the script completely, both he and Mayes received onscreen credit for the screenplay.        The following information was gleaned from press materials and extra materials on the DVD. The film, shot in sequence in order to follow the characters faithfully as they became more and more bedraggled, began production on location aboard the Queen Mary . The ship launched in 1934 as an ocean liner carrying up to 2,020 passengers. Upon its retirement in 1967 in Long Beach, CA, it was restored as a hotel and tourist attraction. For the storm sequence, Neame mounted cameras on gyros to create the illusion of a swaying ship. The scenes that occur after the ship overturns were shot on the Fox lot, where Neame and production designer William Creber used historical photographs and plans to build near-exact replicas of various areas of the ship. The dining room was built right-side-up, hoisted with a forklift so it tilted up to thirty degrees, then flipped upside-down, according to a 1997 AMC Magazine article. The filmmakers also constructed a miniature Queen Mary , measuring twenty-two feet long, that was photographed inside a studio tank. The replica now resides in the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, CA.        The stars personally performed most of the stunts for the film, and material on the DVD extras note that this was done by design as part of the studio's marketing plan. Much publicized was the fact that Shelley Winters gained thirty-five pounds to play the role of "Belle Rosen" and studied for weeks to learn to swim like a champion. According to a modern source, originally Scott was to send Belle on the underwater mission and then save her life, but Gene Hackman suggested that the situation be reversed. The scene in which the character of "Terry" falls from a table and crashes into the ballroom skylight has since become an iconic cinematic shock moment. Actor Ernie Orsatti was asked by the filmmakers to perform the fall himself, and despite his reluctance, recounted in modern sources, he went on to become a renowned stunt man.        The cast included multiple former Academy Awards winners, and during filming, Gene Hackman was awarded the 1971 Best Actor Oscar for his work in The French Connection . Modern sources state that Sally Kellerman was considered to play "Linda Rogo," Petula Clark was offered the role of "Nonnie" and Gene Wilder was originally cast as "James Martin." Modern sources add the following actors to the cast: Craig Barley, Todd Bartlett, Craig Chudy, Orwin C. Harvey, Larry Holt, Marco López, Victor Paul, Allen Pinson, Bobby Porter, Lance Rimmer, David Sharpe and Tom Steele. As noted in the AMC documentary, Allen and Neame planned for the film's final shot to be an aerial view of the sinking ship, but budget constraints forced them to drop the shot.        The Poseidon Adventure proved a critical success and was the top grossing film of 1972, at which point it had earned almost $100 million. The picture's success initiated a spate of disaster films, many produced by Allen, and is considered to be one of the genre's finest. The film received an Academy Award for Best Song and a Special Achievement Award in Visual Effects (L. B. Abbott and A. D. Flowers), as well as nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Winters), Art Direction (Creber and Raphael Bretton), Cinematography (Harold E. Stine), Costume Design (Paul Zastupnevich), Film Editing (Harold F. Kress), Sound (Theodore Soderberg and Herman Lewis) and Music, Original Dramatic Score (John Williams).        The film's theme song was officially entitled "The Song from The Poseidon Adventure ," but became more widely known as "The Morning After." Although contemporary articles stated that Carol Lynley sang the song during the film, the voice heard was actually stand-in singer Renee Armand. A July 1973 Hollywood Reporter article stated that Armand had turned down the opportunity to sing the single, which was released by Maureen McGovern simultaneously with the picture. After composers Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn won the Academy Award in the spring of 1973, it was re-released and became a number-one hit.        Allen was a writer, director and producer who began his film career making spectacle films such as 1961's Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (see below), then worked in television on such series as Lost in Space . The Poseidon Adventure marked his first film in ten years. The success of The Poseidon Adventure and his next film, 1974's Towering Inferno (see below), earned him the nickname "Master of Disaster."        Since its release, The Poseidon Adventure has gained a huge fan following, several fan clubs and has inspired myriad pop-culture parodies. When ABC bought the television rights to the film in 1973, as noted in a November 1973 Los Angeles Times news item, the network paid a then-record $3.2 million for one showing. One sequel was produced in 1979 entitled Beyond the Poseidon Adventure starring Michael Caine and Sally Field which followed a different group of survivors from the ship. In addition, a 2005 TV movie produced by Hallmark Presentations called The Poseidon Adventure starred Adam Baldwin, Rutger Hauer and Steve Guttenberg, and in 2006 a remake, produced by Irwin Allen Productions and Warner Bros., was released entitled Poseidon . That film was directed by Wolfgang Peterson and starred Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss.

The ‘70s Thriller That Did Sinking Ships Better Than ‘Titanic’

This disaster movie turned the genre upside down.

The Big Picture

  • The Poseidon Adventure is a gripping disaster film with realistic and intense visual effects that bring the sinking ship to life.
  • The film features a diverse and relatable cast of characters, each with their strengths and contributions to the group's survival.
  • Compared to Titanic , The Poseidon Adventure offers a more engaging and unpredictable storyline, making it a must-watch for fans of disaster films.

Titanic is an epic movie, one that chronicles the final hours of the fateful ship in excruciating detail, deftly switching between fact and fiction to weave its narrative. Every moment is a testament to director James Cameron 's insistence upon complete accuracy, right up to how the stars looked in the sky that night. But what if you were told that, as good as Titanic is, there's another film about a sinking ship that is arguably more engaging? That film is The Poseidon Adventure , the 1972 film that turned the disaster genre upside down. Literally.

The Poseidon Adventure

A group of passengers must embark on a harrowing struggle for survival after a rogue wave capsizes their cruise ship at sea.

What Is 'The Poseidon Adventure' About?

The Poseidon Adventure , one of a spate of films with a who's who of 1970s celebrities , begins aboard the SS Poseidon, with company representative Linarcos ( Fred Sadoff ) ordering Captain Harrison ( Leslie Nielsen ) to empty ballast and proceed to Athens at full speed, which Harrison does reluctantly. The focus then switches to the ship's dining room that evening, which so happens to be New Year's Eve. Among the passengers are Detective Lieutenant Mike Rogo ( Ernest Borgnine ); his wife Linda ( Stella Stevens ); Reverend Frank Scott ( Gene Hackman ), who is struggling with his faith; Susan ( Pamela Sue Martin ) and her brother Robin ( Eric Shea ), en route to meet up with their parents; retired store owner Manny ( Jack Albertson ) and his wife, Belle ( Shelley Winters ); James Martin ( Red Buttons ), bachelor; and Nonnie ( Carol Lynley ), the ship's singer (who so happens to be singing the Oscar-winning "The Morning After"). The captain is called back to the bridge when an emergency report is received about an undersea quake that has sent a huge wave toward them. It's too late for any evasive maneuvers, though, and the tsunami flips the ship over , killing and injuring almost everyone on board.

Once the ship becomes relatively stable, the survivors assess their situation. Scott strongly urges them to make their way upwards towards what is now the exposed outer hull. Unable to convince everyone, Scott leads a small group, the aforementioned passengers, to the galley door up above, and with the help of Acres ( Roddy McDowall ), an injured waiter up top, positions the Christmas tree for use as a ladder. Just as Scott reaches the top, a series of explosions rocks the ship, causing seawater to flood the ballroom. Those who stayed behind try desperately to climb up the tree, but the weight of everyone knocks the tree into the water, resulting in their deaths.

How Do the Survivors Escape the Ship in 'The Poseidon Adventure'?

The ragtag group of survivors finds the galley, only to discover the fire door, hot to the touch, is shut, forcing them to take another route. They climb the underside of a nearby staircase, with the water nipping at their heels. Denied access to the main passageway due to an obstacle, the group heads towards an access tunnel into the funnel and climbs, only for more explosions to rock the boat and send Acres to his death. His loss instigates an argument between Scott and Rogo, which pauses when another group of survivors happens by. Led by the ship's medic, they are heading towards the bow of the ship. Scott is still adamant that the engine room offers their best chance, so Rogo gives him five minutes to find it before they turn tail and walk with the other group. Scott does find it, only the engine room is on the other side of a flooded corridor, so he takes a rope, secures it, and tries to swim to the other side with the other end for the others to follow. He gets trapped, however, prompting Belle, a former trained swimmer, to dive in and free him.

Sadly, the act leads to Belle suffering a fatal heart attack, forcing a shattered Manny to move on without her. They make their way to the engine room door across a catwalk, but another explosion sends Linda to her death and ruptures a nearby pipe, which begins spewing scalding-hot steam. Scott, feeling that God has abandoned them outright, leaps for a burning-hot valve wheel to shut off the steam, and slowly does so. But Scott can't get back to the group, so he tells Rogo to lead them from there and let go of the wheel, falling into the flaming oil below. The remaining survivors, at long last, enter the propeller shaft room, where they bang on the hull to catch the attention of any rescuers. They are successful, and the rescuers cut a hole through the hull and pull the six out, the only six to survive the disaster .

'The Poseidon Adventure's Visual Effects Won an Oscar

Titanic is a stunning achievement in visual effects , aided by CGI to bring the demise of the mighty ship to life. The Poseidon Adventure couldn't lean on those same tools and, as a result, the catastrophe that befalls the SS Poseidon seems that much more real. The oncoming wave that swallowed the ship, followed by the chaos in the ballroom as the ship is turned upside-down, is one of the greatest disaster movie sequences of all time. So effective, so visceral, that The Poseidon Adventure landed a special Academy Award for technical achievement . One example of the magic behind the movie is the hydraulically controlled dining room set, built to tilt as much as 45 degrees, with an "after" set, with the room's table on the ceiling and the skylight on the floor, that completed the effect.

The set itself had the cast and crew navigate around the fire, through ductwork and shafts, navigating through reversed ladders, stairwells, and twisted steel. The Poseidon Adventure doesn't cheat the audience. The film looks consistently like what a ship would look like had something similar happened in real life. The passengers aboard Titanic didn't face obstacles to reach the top (well, the steerage class did, briefly), but rather instead faced obstacles once they were already on the top deck, trying to find a way off the boat safely. The SS Poseidon seems almost determined to keep the group away from freedom at every turn. The film is also aided by the fact that these effects and set designs are the result of a situation that isn't implausible, or at the very least not all that far removed from an "unsinkable" sinking ship .

'The Poseidon Adventure' Boasts Superior Characters

The Poseidon Adventure boasts no less than five Academy Award winners, and it shows. Each character has a depth to them that makes them more relatable. Not that Titanic does not, but if you don't relate to Jack ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) or Rose ( Kate Winslet ) , it's unlikely you're going to find yourself relating to the two extreme groups of people aboard: the powerful first class, and the poor (but far more fun) steerage class. The wide variety of personalities found in the survivor group in The Poseidon Adventure gives the viewer more options to find someone they can relate to, someone they can look at as an example of how they would react in a similar situation. The characters draw you in, engaging the viewer in caring about how their story ends.

More importantly, the characters all have something to contribute . Robin, fascinated by the ship, knows enough about it to confirm that Scott's assertion to head to the engine room is the right call, as that is where the hull is at its thinnest. Acres and Rogo aid the others in ascending the funnel. Belle jumps into the water to save Scott and the group, utilizing skills that haven't been used in years, ultimately sacrificing herself for the survival of the others. Scott is able to encourage Manny to keep moving, that he still has something to live for after the death of Belle. Rogo leads the group on the last leg of their journey. The most fascinating story is Scott's, the minister at odds with God. He takes the leadership role when no one else would step forward after the disaster. He rails against God, berating Him for having abandoned them, cursing at Him as he closes the valve, becoming a Christ figure whose "Why hast though forsaken me" moments lead into his selfless act that clears the way to freedom, at the loss of his own life.

Overall, in comparing the two films it becomes a battle between the sheer spectacle and love story of Titanic versus the substance of The Poseidon Adventure . Each has its merits, of course, but if you truly want to be engaged in a sinking ship film where the ending is unknown as opposed to a countdown to a well-known maritime casualty , do yourself a favor and check out The Poseidon Adventure . You'll fall head over heels for it.

The Poseidon Adventure is available to rent on Apple TV+ in the U.S.

  • the scene of Rev. Frank Scott's (Gene Hackman) persuasive speech to some of the survivors: ("Everyone above us before the ship turned over is dead. Because now they're under the water....There's nobody alive but us! And nobody's going to help us except ourselves. lt's up to each one of you...The sea's gonna keep pouring in. We're gonna keep settling deeper and deeper. We may even go under before we get up to the bottom to cut our way out. But it's something to try. It's a chance. We might make it. lf you stay here, you'll certainly die!"); he claimed that their only hope of rescue was found 'upwards' at the outer hull, which was now above water
  • in response, only about 10 passengers joined Scott to move to the ship's hull (only 1" thick); after a series of explosions, the ballroom was flooded and those not in Scott's small group began to drown; many frantically attempted to climb a Christmas tree as a ladder to get out of the ship's grand ballroom, but it fell backwards from the weight of too many people
  • the various perils of the journey to the hull, including water rapidly rising, blocked passageways, explosions, and squabbles between survivors
  • the exciting water-rescue scene when Jewish passenger Mrs. Belle Rosen saved Rev. Scott from drowning when he was pinned down by a collapsed panel, and gasped: "You see, Mr. Scott, in the water, I'm a very skinny lady," and then died of a heart attack after admitting: ("I guess I'm not the champion of the Women's Swimming Association anymore... Enough is enough. Let me go. Please, let me go. Give this, give this to Manny. Tell him he has to give it to our grandson for both of us. You see, that's the sign for life. Life always matters very much"); Rev. Scott grieved over Belle's body: "Oh, God. God, not this woman. Oh, God, not this woman"
  • the scene of detective cop husband Mike Rogo's reaction to his ex-prostitute wife Linda's death when she fell after a rocking explosion -- he angrily vented his rage at Rev. Scott and sobbed: ("You! Preacher! YOU LYIN', MURDERIN', SON-OF-A-BITCH! You almost suckered me in! I started to believe in your promises! That we had a chance! What chance? You took from me the only thing l ever loved in the whole world. My Linda. You killed her! You killed her! You killed her. You killed her")
  • Rev. Scott's sacrificial death as he ranted at the heavens and God for their predicament: ("How many more sacrifices? How much more blood? How many more lives?! Belle wasn't enough! Acres wasn't! Now this girl! You want another life? Then take me!"); as he dangled from a circular control valve wheel, he closed a critical steam vent that released scalding hot steam and blocked everyone's way while yelling to the others: "You can make it! Keep going! Rogo! Get them through!" and then let go and fell into a flaming pool of oil and wreckage himself
  • the triumpant ending in which the sole six survivors reached the propeller shaft tunnel and banged on the thin hull to attract rescuers to cut through the metal with a blow torch to save them; Mike expressed his changed opinion of Preacher Frank: "The preacher was right! That beautiful son-of-a-bitch was right!"

I. WAS. SHOOK.

I’m fully aware that this epic disaster movie about a cruise ship that flips upside down is ENTIRELY unrealistic, but damn it was a fun ride ok! For some reason, the idea of drowning is quite scary to me. Not as scary as falling from some ridiculous height, but still pretty scary and this movie manages to feature both of those highly undesirable exit strategies so yeah I was screaming at the TV during certain parts and just stupid tense for most of it so basically it was GREAT!

Kurt Russell is awesome in everything and really I thought the whole cast did a great job. If I ever get stuck on a capsized ship I absolutely…

a big budget toilet floater, even kurt russell couldn't save this sinking ship

on the plus side, it has emmy rossum & fergalicious in it, a few fun set pieces and thankfully it's a brisk hour and a half, but it's really bland, the effects have not aged well and there is some DOGSHIT acting in this

like who the fuck was pushing for josh lucas to be a leading man? probably the same people who were pushing sam worthington for so many years

Kind of applaud this for how fast it jumps into the disaster carnage but still one of the only major misses from Wolfgang Petersen, James Cameron just completely wiped the floor with him on this one. Somehow memory-holed not only that Fergie is in this but that she performs multiple numbers on the boat that were included on the film's soundtrack.

Screen Rant

51-year-old disaster movie critiqued for survival capacity by expert.

1972 disaster film The Poseidon Adventure is torn to shreds by cruise ship captain Wendy Williams, who critiques aspects of its capsizing scene.

  • The Poseidon Adventure 's capsizing sequence is not believable according to cruise ship captain Wendy Williams. Tsunamis do not look like they appear in the film.
  • Williams explains that larger objects on cruise ships are secured, but tables and chairs are movable. The quick turning of the ship in the film is also unrealistic, and in real life, ships fill up with water when they capsize.
  • While there may be air pockets inside a capsized ship, the likelihood of survival for an extended period of time is highly unlikely. The thickness of the ship's hull can vary depending on its build and class.

An expert critiques the survival capacity of the 1972 film The Poseidon Adventure . Released 25 years before Titanic , The Poseidon Adventure was a different take on a sinking ship endeavor. The Gene Hackman-starring film follows the story of a group of passengers who struggle to survive after a wave capsizes their cruise ships.

Cruise ship captain Wendy Williams breaks down The Poseidon Adventure ’s capsizing sequence, evaluating how survivable the event would be. Speaking with Insider , Williams broke down three aspects of the sequences. Williams debunked several myths perpetuated from The Poseidon Adventure , including how tsunamis look out at sea and the thickness of a ship’s hull. Speaking on the capsizing sequence, Williams pointed out that in real life, ships do not have tables and chairs bolted down. This usurps the fundamental visual element of the scene, wherein ship passengers cling onto overturned dining tables. Ultimately, Williams gave the film’s believability a paltry “ 2 or 3 ” out of 10.

“This one looked like Niagara falls on its side. Not a believable wave. Tsunami is biggest when it kind of hits the shore. Out at sea, a tsunami might just be a wave like any other wave. So the fact that this is a tsunami and not a real wave, yeah probably not that believable. Being that a tsunami wave wouldn’t look like that, you wouldn’t necessarily navigate away from the actual wave. But you would navigate away from the area of concern if you could. I do remember seeing this as a kid, and I remember the dining room scene, and everything going upside down. Are tables, and chairs, and pianos and things secure on cruise ships? Larger vessels, they have something called a heavy weather or a Heavy Object Register List. And yes, larger or big ticket items that can cause a lot of damage like a piano–that could literally go through a wall of a bulkhead–so they are secured. Tables and chairs, no. They would be movable. And for the vessel to turn that quickly, so that people would have to hang onto things…not believable. If a ship was to capsize, they don’t just turn total quickly, they fill up with water. Would there be a sustained amount of time that people could have survived inside there? I mean, possibly yes. There would be air pockets. But the likelihood of there being that much air, that much time, highly unlikely. The shaft alley, that’s interesting, because the shell plating thickness is only 1 inch. That is probably icebreaker class. One inch would be exceptionally thick. Ship hulls are not that, not that thick typically, but in engine spaces, technical spaces, they would be. Thickness varies depending on how the ship was built and for what class. I’d probably give is a 9 as far as fun movies go, believability, 2 or 3.”

How Would The Poseidon Adventure Improve If Made Today?

Williams' assessment of The Poseidon Adventure is brutally honest. Picking apart every aspect of the film’s survival narrative, Williams pulls no punches when breaking down just how many vessel-related inaccuracies the film contains. The only positive Williams throws The Poseidon Adventure , and possibly the one reason it scored a 2 out of 10, is that it is possible that an engine room would be supported by a thicker, one-inch hull. Williams' ratings were not entirely dramatic, as she rated Titanic 's sinking fairly highly , for example.

Related: Titanic True Story: How Much Of The Movie Is Real?

Looking closely at these scenes, it seems there are parts of The Poseidon Adventure that could be improved today through technological advances. The tsunami is a prime example of this. In The Poseidon Adventure , the wave that overtakes the boat has a comically robotic retreat, sweeping all too perfectly over the boat. Today, CGI could likely solve this issue, as films like Avatar: The Way of Water and Dune make use of VFX to better render the massive movement of bodies of water or other materials. 2014’s Interstellar , for example, creates a mid-ocean CGI huge wave on a distant planet, showing the development of the technology.

What The Poseidon Adventure still lacked, however, was the level of research needed to more accurately reflect a disaster event of that nature. CGI could make a wave look better, but it would not solve the fact that out-at-sea tsunamis do not appear that way, and should not be labeled as such. Furthermore, the thickness of the ship’s hull is a fact that exists only in dialogue, as The Poseidon Adventure is making no attempt to show audiences details of the inside of a hull, or anything of that nature. Analyzing The Poseidon Adventure is a fascinating study on the intersection between VFX and quality research when depicting disaster on screen.

A Freak-Wave Flip-Out? Not Likely

movie cruise ship flips over

By Kari Haskell

  • May 14, 2006

"Poseidon," the $175 million remake of the 1972 disaster classic, "The Poseidon Adventure," sailed into movie theaters last week at about the same time that the world's biggest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's new Freedom of the Seas, glided into New York Harbor.

There's no question that at 237 feet high and 1,112 feet long, Freedom of the Seas is big. But is it, or any other luxury liner, invulnerable? Could a real cruise ship get its world turned upside-down, as happens to Hollywood's make-believe behemoth?

" 'Poseidon' is good clean fun, but it's not likely to happen," said Dr. William Asher, principal oceanographer at the applied physics laboratory at the University of Washington.

In "Poseidon," the ship's passengers are partying hard when a freak 150-foot wave strikes the luxury liner broadside, rolling it over. The surviving passengers and crew have to work their way through the bowels of the ship to the surface.

"A wave as large as 150 feet hasn't been observed, the largest is around 120 feet," Dr. Asher said. But even if such a huge rogue wave hit, modern ocean liners are big enough, and have enough safety systems like stabilizers, that while passengers might be in for a bit of a roller-coaster ride, they wouldn't do a loop-the-loop.

"The larger cruise liner, the more stable it is," said Dr. Owen T. Hughes, an oceanographer and engineer at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Though there haven't been reports of large cruise ships capsizing, rogue waves have destroyed container ships and tankers, and have damaged passenger vessels. In 2001, two cruise ships encountered waves that broke bridge windows. In 1998, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2 was struck by 90-foot wave. The captain detected it on radar in time to turn the ship to face it head on, so that little damage occurred.

With extreme conditions, a freak event could happen, Dr. Asher conceded. But with modern technology, even a good old-fashioned Titanic-like collision with an iceberg is highly unlikely. "You can't run your ship into an iceberg anymore, the radar is just too good," he said. "It would have to manned by a complete idiot."

Baltimore bridge collapse draws comparisons to Obama-produced film about cargo ship cyberattack

'leave the world behind,' produced for netflix by barack and michelle obama, compared to baltimore’s francis scott key bridge collapse.

Danielle Wallace

Divers search for six people in river after Baltimore bridge collapse

Fox News' Griff Jenkins reports the latest from the shores of the Patapsco River after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Images from the shocking bridge collapse in Baltimore have drawn comparisons online to a recent film produced by Barack and Michelle Obama about a cargo ship under cyberattack.  The White House has said the incident involving the cargo ship that plowed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge was not believed to have had nefarious intent and showed no signs of terrorism or cyberattacks.

But online users pointed out similarities between images of the collapse and a scene from " Leave The World Behind ," the first fictional film Barack and Michelle Obama produced for Netflix. There is a scene in the film, directed by Sam Esmail and starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Kevin Bacon and Ethan Hawke, where an oil tanker, named the White Lion, crashes onto the beachfront amid a crowd of horrified tourists.

"In 2023, the Obamas produced a movie called Leave the World Behind, where a cyberattack causes a massive container ship to lose power & crash," Matt Wallace wrote to his 1.6 million followers on X." Months later a massive container ship loses power & crashes into Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, CAUSING A DEADLY COLLAPSE."

BALTIMORE BRIDGE COLLAPSE: DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT 6 PRESUMED DEAD AS HARROWING AUDIO IS RELEASED

cargo ship crashed into Baltimore bridge

Workers continue to investigate and search for victims after the cargo ship Dali crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse, March 27, 2024, in Baltimore.  (Scott Olson/Getty Images)

Another user, @GoodShepherd316, shared with his 89,500 followers a still from the movie scene showing the ship running ashore on a beach, and another photo similarly showing the Singapore-flagged Dali crashing through Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"In the movie, ‘ Leave the World Behind ’ a massive cargo ship loses power and crashes onto a beach. Coincidentally, a cargo ship loses power and crashes into the Francis Scott Bridge. Was this predictive programming ? My friends, we are living in the days of deception. Call on JESUS," the user wrote.

According to its Netflix description , the movie is about a family's getaway to a luxurious rental home taking an ominous turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices – and two strangers arrive at their door. Under the same roof, the families are confronted with strange apocalyptic events, including plane crashes, herds of deer filing into the backyard and one of the children's teeth mysteriously falling out.

One of the characters begins to theorize the events "could be the result of a military campaign intended to destabilize a nation by forcing people to turn against each other," according to Vanity Fair.

"Leave The World Behind," released in 2023, is the first fictional movie executive produced by the former president and first lady through their Higher Ground Productions company, which has a multi-year deal with Netflix.

Investigators began collecting evidence Wednesday from Baltimore Harbor , and divers searched through twisted metal for six construction workers feared dead.

The investigation picked up speed as the Baltimore region reeled from the sudden loss of a major transportation link that is part of the highway loop around the city. The disaster also closed the port that is vital to the city's shipping industry. Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board boarded the ship and planned to recover information from its electronics and paperwork, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.

The agency also is reviewing the voyage data recorder recovered by the Coast Guard and building a timeline of what led to the crash, which federal and state officials have said appeared to be an accident.

The ship’s crew issued a mayday call early Tuesday, saying they had lost power and the vessel's steering system just minutes before striking one of the bridge’s columns.

TRANSPORTATION SEC BUTTIGIEG SAYS GOV'T MUST 'TEAR DOWN' BARRIERS TO REBUILD BALTIMORE BRIDGE

Video showed the ship moving at what Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said was about 9 mph toward the 1.6-mile bridge.

Traffic was still moving across the span, and some vehicles appeared to escape with only seconds to spare. The crash caused the span to break and fall into the water within seconds.

The last-minute warning from the ship allowed police just enough time to stop traffic on the interstate highway. One officer parked sideways across the lanes and planned to drive onto the bridge to alert a construction crew once another officer arrived. But he did not get the chance as the powerless vessel barreled into the bridge.

Attention also turned toward the container ship Dali and its past. Synergy Marine Group, which manages the ship, said the crash happened while it was under the control of one or more pilots, who are local specialists who help guide vessels safely in and out of ports. The ship, which was headed from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, is owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd., and Danish shipping giant Maersk said it had chartered the vessel.

The vessel passed foreign port state inspections in June and September. In the June inspection, a faulty monitor gauge for fuel pressure was rectified before the vessel departed the port, Singapore’s port authority said in a statement Wednesday. The ship was traveling under the Singapore flag, and officials there said they will be conducting their own investigation in addition to supporting U.S. authorities.

The sudden loss of a major transportation link that loops around the city and carries 30,000 vehicles a day and the disruption of a vital shipping port will affect not only thousands of dockworkers and commuters but also U.S. consumers who are likely to experience shipping delays.

At least eight people went into the water when the bridge went down. Two were rescued, but the other six, part of a construction crew that had been filling potholes on the bridge, were missing and presumed dead. Among the missing were people from Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, according to diplomats from those countries. Three Mexicans were on the bridge. One was rescued, and two are missing, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said.

The Port of Baltimore is a busy entry point along the East Coast for new vehicles made in Germany, Mexico, Japan and the United Kingdom, along with coal and farm equipment.

The Singaporean-flagged cargo ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore Tuesday altered course and veered toward a pillar shortly before impact, a CNN analysis of MarineTraffic ship-tracking data confirms.

It’s unclear what caused the ship to crash into the bridge or why its lights were flickering. CNN has reached out to the National Transportation Safety Board to inquire about a possible power failure.

The container ship DALI, which was en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, begins to change course toward the bridge’s pillar at 1:26 a.m. local time, striking the bridge at 1:28 a.m. ET, according to MarineTraffic data and video from the scene. Video from 1:25 a.m. ET shows a plume of dark smoke billowing from the ship. DALI's lights flicker at least twice before the incident.

In video, as it navigates down the Patapsco River, the ship’s lights can be seen going out at 1:24 a.m. ET, before turning back on, and then flickering off and on again between 1:26 a.m. ET and 1.27 a.m. ET, just before it hits the bridge.

Maryland transportation secretary says contractors were working on bridge at time of collapse

From CNN's Antoinette Radford

Maryland State Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld told reporters there were workers on the Francis Scott Key Bridge at the time of its collapse.

"We know there were individuals on the bridge at the time of the collapse, working on the bridge, contractors for us," he said at a news conference Tuesday morning.

Wiedefeld said the workers were "basically doing some concrete deck repair," but said they did not know how many vehicles were involved.

He added that the transport authority has set up a facility for family members of those who were believed to be on the bridge at the time of its collapse.

Baltimore fire chief: Sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water

A helicopter flies over the scene of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace says authorities have detected vehicles submerged in the water.

“Our sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water,” said Wallace at a news conference on the collapse of Francis Scott Key Bridge. “I don't have a count of that yet.”

He said emergency services are using sonar, drones and infrared technology as a part of their search for people and vehicles who may have fallen from the Key Bridge into the Patapsco River.

No indication of "terrorism" or intent in Baltimore bridge collapse, police chief says

From CNN’s Andy Rose

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, with Mayor Brandon Scott, right, and Fire Department Chief James Wallace, left, speaks at a press conference on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26.

Baltimore Police said there was no evidence that the ship collision that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was intentional.

“There is absolutely no indication that there's any terrorism, that this was done on purpose,” Chief Richard Worley said at a news conference.

The FBI  said  that it was joining the investigation into the cause of the collision.

Rescue crews have determined there are vehicles in the Patapsco River following the bridge collapse.

“Our sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water,” said Fire Chief James Wallace. “I don't have a count of that yet.”

Wallace said they are waiting to make sure that the ship is secure and stable before investigators board it.

“Never would you think that you would see, physically see, the Key Bridge tumble down like that,” Mayor Brandon M. Scott said.

Cruises, cars and commodities: What to know about the Port of Baltimore

From CNN's Mark Thompson and Hanna Ziady

In this aerial image cargo containers are readied for transport at the Port of Baltimore in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 14, 2021.

The collapse of the   Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River outside the Port of Baltimore threatens to disrupt shipping operations at a major US trade hub for autos, container traffic and commodities. Baltimore also has a cruise terminal.

Closer to the Midwest than any other port on the East Coast, Baltimore ranks first in the United States for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year. It was also the leading port for farming and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum. It was second in the country for exporting coal.

Overall, Baltimore ranks as the 9th biggest US port for international cargo, handling a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion in 2023.

“The immediate focus is the rescue operation, but there will clearly be a highly-complex recovery phase and investigation to follow and we don't know what impact this will have on operations at the Port of Baltimore," said Emily Stausbøll, market analyst at Norway-based shipping analytics company Xeneta.

“While Baltimore is not one of the largest US East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than one million containers each year so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," she added.

Baltimore's cruise terminal serves ships operated by Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. Cruises carrying more than 444,000 passengers departed from the port last year.

According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.

Rescue crews looking for at least seven people in Baltimore bridge collapse

From CNNs Andy Rose

Rescue operations are underway near the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, as crews look for people who fell into the Patapsco River.

“We are still very much in an active search and rescue posture at this point, and we will continue to be for some time,” Wallace added.

Baltimore Fire says two people have been rescued from the river – one who was uninjured, and another in hospitalized “very serious condition.”

“This is an unthinkable tragedy,” Mayor Brandon Scott said. “We have to first and foremost pray for all of those impacted.”

Ship that collided with Baltimore bridge was chartered by Danish shipping company Maersk

From CNN's Alex Stambaugh in Hong Kong

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, US, on March 26.

The container ship that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday was chartered by Maersk and carrying their customers' cargo, the Danish shipping company told CNN.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," The company said in its statement.

The company, which has a full name of A.P. Moller - Maersk, said no company crew and personnel were onboard the vessel. It said the ship, DALI, is operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group.

"We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed," the statement said.

CNN is attempting to contact the owner and managers of the ship, including Synergy.

FBI Baltimore on the scene at the Key Bridge

FBI Baltimore personnel are on the scene at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, they have said in a post on X.

The agency said it was working "side by side with our local, state and federal partners."

Baltimore fire emergency chief says 2 people saved from water after Key Bridge collapse

The Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace says authorities rescued two people from the water this morning, one without injury and the other who has been transferred to hospital in a serious condition.

Authorities are continuing their search for upwards of seven people, Wallace says. But, he says that number could change as it is a "very large incident." Earlier on Tuesday, an official said as many as 20 people could be in the water.

Wallace added that the crew remains on board the ship, and are communicating with the US Coast Guard. He added that emergency services are looking into reports that there were workers on the bridge at the time of the incident.

Speaking at the press conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott also described the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy,” and offered his prayers for all those affected, as well as his thanks to first responders.

Disappointing photos show what it's actually like to go on a cruise

  • I took a seven-day voyage on one of the largest cruise ships in the world , my first cruise ever.
  • I found the reality of cruising didn't match my expectations from social media and promotional ads.
  • I spent much of my time battling crowds, waiting in lines, and sitting on hot tour buses.

Insider Today

I booked my first-ever cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in April 2022. The seven-day Caribbean voyage on a mega-ship took me round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to port stops in Honduras, Mexico, and the Bahamas. I expected breathtaking views of the world between relaxing swimming and sunbathing sessions.

But my experience didn't quite meet my expectations.

Instead, I sunbathed in a loud, crowded pool area when I was lucky enough to find a chair. I spent more time waiting in lines than I had anticipated, and I saw much of the world from behind other people's heads.

Here's an overview of the most disappointing aspects of my cruise, from getting to the port to sailing across the region

The disappointment started before I was even on the cruise.

Since I don't live near my cruise's departure city, my trip began with a flight and a budget hotel room near my departure port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

When I arrived at my port city's airport, I waited 45 minutes for a hotel shuttle to pick me up.

This was the first of many crowded bus rides during my trip. Looking back, I wish I had called a cab — especially since the next morning, I piled into a hot bus with several other cruise guests as I headed to the port.

There was a long line to get inside the cruise terminal, and I should have known by this point that I'd stand in many more lines during my cruise.

Inside the cruise terminal , there was another long line to get through security. While I waited, I chuckled to myself as I read signs that said, "Adventure begins here."

Once aboard the ship, I was excited to view the ocean as we sailed away, but I was blocked by tall, thick glass and couldn't find a place to stand.

My obstructed view of the ship leaving Fort Lauderdale made me feel as frustrated as standing behind tall patrons at a concert.

The ship was so large that I got lost several times during my stay.

But I found the maps on each floor to be helpful.

As I explored the ship, I was surprised that even a mega-ship could feel overcrowded.

While people seemed to enjoy themselves, many communal decks looked and felt like crowded malls.

The outdoor decks had 19 pools, plunge pools, and whirlpools accessible to guests. These spaces were crowded throughout the day. And even though there were rules against saving chairs with towels, I saw plenty of people doing it, so finding a spot to relax was stressful.

A Royal Caribbean representative told Business Insider crew members might remove items from lounge chairs after 30 minutes. Still, they must also consider families and groups who may be in the pool or going to the restroom when enforcing rules like these and must use their best judgment.

There were crowds and lines virtually everywhere I went.

From the buffet to activities like water slides and mini-golf, I felt like I spent more time waiting in line than enjoying the ship. For example, I waited in line for three hours to play a round of laser tag that was less than 20 minutes long.

At port stops, I waited in lines to go through security every time I left and returned to the ship. I found this less annoying than the other wait times since it made me feel safer.

The lines continued at each port, crowded with others excited to begin their tours.

I often had to battle through crowds just to find signs for my excursions.

It was exciting to explore new places at each stop, though some of this exploration was from the window of another hot bus.

A Royal Caribbean representative told BI the cruise line worked with local tour operators for its excursions, so air conditioning standards varied.

And when I was finally doing the cool thing I booked, like walking across a suspension bridge amid the treetops, my view was sometimes blocked once more by everyone else who booked the tour, too.

movie cruise ship flips over

I hoped to capture an empty image of this majestic jungle bridge, but it wasn't possible without losing my tour crew.

According to a crew member I overheard, roughly 5,000 other people were aboard the ship, so I understand why the cruise felt so crowded.

I think that if I were to book a less crowded cruise next time, I might enjoy it more.

Tom Cruise Seen Sprinting Down Street in London as He Shoots Next Mission: Impossible Movie

The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' film, which does not yet have a title, is expected in theaters May 23, 2025

Mega / Dean - Click News And Media / SplashNews.com

Tom Cruise is showing no signs of slowing down in the next Mission: Impossible movie.

On Sunday, Cruise, 61, was seen sprinting down a street in London while filming a scene for the upcoming eighth film in his signature action franchise. The actor could be seen wearing a black suit with a white shirt opened at the top, with fake blood drenched over his chest while filming the sequence.

Cruise most recently appeared as his Mission: Impossible character Ethan Hunt in last year's Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning , which made $172 million at the  domestic box office . Dead Reckoning also earned the franchise its first-ever Academy Award nominations when it received nods for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the recent 96th Oscars ceremony.

A title for the upcoming eighth Mission: Impossible movie has not yet been announced. The next film was originally set for release on June 28, but production delays related to 2023's SAG-AFTRA strike forced the film to restart production in the fall and delay its release until May 23, 2025, as Deadline reported back in October.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Dead Reckoning left Cruise's character Ethan Hunt and series regulars Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg) at odds with villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) and forging new alliances with characters like Grace (Hayley Atwell) over a battle for control over a sentient artificial intelligence.

The eighth Mission: Impossible film is just one movie among a number of projects Cruise has in development. In February, PEOPLE confirmed Cruise will star in the next movie from The Revenant filmmaker  Alejandro G. Iñárritu , while The Hollywood Reporter  reported in January that Paramount is developing Top Gun 3 as a sequel to Cruise's major 2022 success Top Gun: Maverick .

Cruise, known for his penchant for performing his own stunts, was recently seen climbing the iconic Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills on March 16 accompanied by a film crew. A representative for Cruise did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Monday. While it's unclear what Cruise was filming on Saturday, the stunt did not appear related to the next Mission: Impossible film.

Mission: Impossible 8 is expected in theaters May 23, 2025.

Carnival freedom cruise ship catches fire for second time in less than 2 years.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The Carnival Freedom cruise ship experienced its second fire in less than two years, and passenger footage caught the flames with smoke coming from the ship’s exhaust funnel Saturday afternoon.

“That’s nutty,” X user @breezebreeze_ can be heard while showing the fire aboard the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line put out several tweet replies regarding the incident they say happened at 3:15 ET.

“Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel,” one of the posts read. “The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to Princess Cay due to weather.”

The news prompted passengers of the ship’s upcoming departure from Port Canaveral on Monday to ask the cruise line if their itinerary would go off as planned.

“Is the cruise for the Carnival Freedom March 25 departing cruise from Port Canaveral still planning on going?” one X user asked Carnival. “We need to know for travel purposes!”

Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel March 23, 2024.

“I can almost guarantee it’ll be canceled,” another X user wrote about the ship’s next planned cruise. “This isn’t the first time this has happened ironically to this ship, and the following sailing when it happened that time were canceled, but obviously not confirm[ed].”

Carnival quickly responded to quell any rumors, saying it does not expect any impact on the next Carnival Freedom voyage.

The Freedom’s exhaust funnel caught fire in May 2022 while the ship was docked at Grand Turk Island in Turks and Caicos. Video from then also showed the ship’s funnel – referred to by some as the whale tail – consumed by flames and smoke.

Footage shows a Carnival Cruise ship on fire in Turks and Caicos in 2022.

The part of the ship that caught fire is designed to help direct the flow of exhaust gases away from the ship, according to the Crown Cruise Vacations website.

“The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames,” Carnival said about Saturday’s fire. “Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated.”

Carnival said the captain made “multiple announcements to guests and crew” about the fire. The port side of the funnel fell onto Deck 10, Carnival said. No injuries were reported.

The Carnival Freedom was in Freeport as scheduled Sunday, according to CruiseMapper. Carnival said there are no operational issues with the ship’s systems.
