Tour de France: Van Aert surges to stage 8 victory in Lausanne

Michael Matthews holds off Tadej Pogacar for second place

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) further enhanced his green jersey hopes, taking a spectacular sprint victory on stage 8 of the Tour de France over Michael Matthews (BikeExchange-Jayco).

Race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), attentive and proactive on the uphill finish into Lausanne, was front and centre in the sprint, finishing third, taking the four-second time bonus and further extending his lead over Jonas Vingegaard - eighth on the stage - to 39 seconds.

The Ineos Grenadiers contenders Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates finished in the peloton to remain in third and fourth, respectively, as did the remainder of the top 10 riders overall.

"It was a pretty tough climb, 4.5k at 4%, with the flat part in between everything going uphill was really steep - I had to fight to stay on the wheel of Pogacar and his teammates," Van Aert said. "I knew if I could stay on the wheel the sprint was a bit flatter and I was waiting for that moment."

The category 3 climb to the finish proved too much for mountains classification leader Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost), who rolled in six minutes down, but the breakaway mopped up most of the mountain points and he continues in the polka dot jersey with a one-point advantage over Pogačar.

It also proved too hard for Van Aert's green jersey rivals Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck). Now with a 115-point lead over Jakobsen, Van Aert's next nearest rival for the jersey is Pogačar, who has hardly put a foot wrong in the Tour de France so far.

"We're super happy with the green points for grab today. For me, it was a good opportunity. Today was a big chance to take a lot of points on a few of my competitors. I'm really glad my team put everything into to chase down the breakaway, then you have to finish it off."

Pogačar, 23, remains the race's best young rider with Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) remaining second at 1:39.

From the breakaway group, Matteo Cattaneo (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) claimed the day's combativity prize. Ineos Grenadiers, with four riders in the top 10, remaining best team.

Already the winner of stage 6 and 7, Pogačar said he wasn't expecting to go for the stage win today but was still disappointed to miss out.

"It was not that far away but it was a fun game. I maybe hesitated a little bit and Van Aert passed me with super speed. For sure it's a little disappointing but third place is still great," the yellow jersey holder said.

"I always like sprinting, when I was younger I was the smallest and almost always last. I'm really happy that now at least when it's going up 4 or 5k I can still do a solid sprint in the end. But still not as close as Matthews and Van Aert.

"Today was not the plan to win in the jersey, we said we'd sit back and tried to relax. BikeExchange and Jumbo-Visma had interest to pull and to win the stage from the bunch. We were thinking maybe today was breakaway day, but in the end it was an opportunity for us to take the win."

Earlier in the day, Pogačar had a brief scare coming down in a massive crash in the first 20km of the stage but it was without consequence.

"I was in the middle of the crash. I hit the ground but not so much, it was one of the softest crashes I've ever experienced. It was for me nothing bad, we came back quite fast and for me it was OK."

How it unfolded

The eighth day of the 2022 Tour de France was another sweltering stage with the peloton travelling from Dole in the Jura department of France into the race's fourth country, Switzerland. The finishing town, Lausanne, is famous for being the heart of the Olympic movement, with IOC headquarters having moved there from Paris during World War I. It is also the home of the European Cycling Union and the International Testing Agency which carries out anti-doping controls for cycling.

Another type of test was the main focus of the start of the 186.3-kilometre stage when news came that one of race leader Tadej Pogačar's teammates, Vegard Stake Laengen, tested positive for COVID-19 and did not start. Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën) also came up positive for the coronavirus and went home.

Mountains classification leader Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost) attempted to make the breakaway in the flurry of attacks that followed the flag drop at kilometre zero.

A crash just after the breakaway went clear caused a bit of havoc, with Pogačar amongst the fallers. Kevin Vermaerke (Team DSM), who sparked the crash after going down in a touch of wheels, was the most injured and abandoned the race. Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) continued his bad luck by hitting the deck. When the dust settled three riders made up a satisfactory breakaway composition as Jumbo-Visma and UAE Team Emirates called off hostilities and formed a blockade at the front of the peloton to allow Pogačar to return.

Mattia Cattaneo (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl), Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) and Frederik Frison (Lotto Soudal) were the lucky trio allowed to dangle at most three minutes ahead of the peloton, as Jumbo-Visma eyed the stage win. Nathan Van Hooydonck almost single-handedly controlled the gap for green jersey holder Van Aert.

The trio took turns taking the prizes along the route, with Wright crossing the intermediate sprint after 46.9km first, Frison taking the first KOM on the Côte du Maréchet at kilometre 75.6, and Cattaneo leading over the Côte des Rousses (101.3km), but none were a threat to Cort's polka dot jersey.

Before the Côte de Pétra Félix, Frison let go of his two companions and, covered in salt and sweat, went back to the peloton two minutes behind and Cattaneo led Wright over the top. Not long after, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) came to grief on the climb, going down mid-bunch. Then, to add insult to injury, as he went through the feed zone a soigneur holding out a musette managed to mistakenly punch him in the face. The Frenchman, after taking a brief moment to gather himself, chased back on with 34km to go.

Cattaneo and Wright fought on the long gradual descent toward Lausanne, enjoying the tailwind, but BikeExchange-Jayco threw Luke Durbridge into the chase for Michael Matthews bringing the gap down to 1:00 with 17.4km to go.

Jumbo-Visma relieved Van Hooydonck and pressed the accelerator, inspiring Trek-Segafredo for Stuyven, TotalEnergies for Sagan, Alpecin-Deceuninck for Van der Poel, Lotto Soudal for Ewen and AG2R Citroën to pitch in to close down the gap for the uphill sprint. The duo continued to push and held the chasers to 36 seconds with 10km remaining but they'd need more.

With 8.4km to go, Wright left Cattaneo behind, swinging the favour pendulum further toward the peloton. Pogačar himself came forward with Majka to help put the Bahrain Victorious rider out of his misery as the road tilted uphill. They caught Wright with 3.5km to go. The climb reduced the peloton but all of the favourites were present, with the green jersey of Van Aert closely tracking the race leader.

Majka led Pogačar, Vingegaard and Van Aert to the final 300m when Jungles finally came to the fore. Matthews launched first but Van Aert proved too strong.

Tour de France 2022 Favourites stage 8: Finale for puncheurs

The riders clip into their pedals in Dole to enter the Haut Jura Regional Natural Park approximately 35 kilometer later. There is hardly a metre of flat in the unspoilt region right next to the Swiss border, although the uphill sections are not hard.

When crossing the Swiss border there are still 70 kilometres to go. Following a flat section along Lac de Joux and a short climb to the highest point of the day – at 1,176 metres – the riders descend towards Lake Geneva. Shortly they hit the finish climb.

The ascent is 4.8 kilometres long and averages 4.6%. The first 2 kilometres go up at 5.7% and then a flat kilometre makes way to the likely decisive part. After 1 kilometre at 9.5% and the final 800 metres at 3.4% the line appears shortly after the Stade Olympique de la Pontais.

The finish climb is not unlike the Mûr-de-Bretagne, where Mathieu van der Poel took a stage win and the maillot jaune in last year’s Tour de France. The Dutchman is a shadow of his former self, so it’s unilikely he will pull off something similar in Laussanne.

Tour de France & Etape du Tour 2022 route reveal - LIVE!

The route reveal for the 2022 Tour de France takes place this morning at 10:30am UK time - and that of course means that we'll discover the route of the 2022 Etape du Tour .

After two attempts to hold the Etape in Nice in 2020 and 2021 were foiled by Covid, will the organisers hope for third time lucky, or opt for a completely different route elsewhere in France?

Without jumping to any conclusions, official Etape Nice jerseys have just appeared in Rapha's bargain bin so we're expecting to see something new for 2022.

You can follow the launch live online by signing up to the new Tour de France Club at www.letour.fr/en/unveiling-route-2022 .

It's free, and there are a couple of incentives thrown in to while away the minutes until the reveal.

By way of a hint, the 2021 edition was 3414km long - as anyone who followed Lachlan Morton's incredible Alt Tour this year may remember. If you missed it, the EF Education Nippo rider rode the complete Tour solo on a bike loaded with camp gear - and still reached Paris ahead of his team mates in the pro peloton.

Another little perk to this year's launch - the organisers will be releasing the first 100 entries to the 2022 Etape du Tour live during this morning's route reveal.

10:47am: La Marmotte makes a grab for Le Tour's thunder

Some classic trolling here from the organisers of La Marmotte - they've just opened entries to the 2022 edition... via an email timed perfectly to coincide with the Tour de France route reveal.

La Marmotte is of course the Etape du Tour's main rival to the title of Europe's most celebrated sportive. And it usually takes place on the same weekend as the Etape.

The Marmotte will be on Sunday 3 July 2022. And some news for hardcore sportivistes - the Marmotte Ultrafondo returns for 2022.

That's 226km, 6300m climbing. Two ascents of the local hill, Alpe d'Huez.

10:54am: Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift

Easily the biggest news of this year's reveal is the launch of the first women's Tour - the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

Le Tour Femmes will start in Paris on the final day of the men's Tour - a decision taken, say the organisers, to ensure the event receives maximum media attention.

The opening stage will feature a KOM on the Champs Elysees. Not exactly noted as a major climb, that... but it has precedent from 1979 apparently.

There will be plenty of climbing in the following stages though, including a spot of gravel on the Planche des Belles Filles.

The inaugural Tour de France Femmes will feature eight stages. Credit to sponsors Zwift for backing what is a big first step towards parity.

"We will be looking back on this in 100 years", says race director Marion Rousse.

11:23am: Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark

The audience in Paris is packed with cycling royalty, but now on stage is crown prince Frederik of Denmark.

Sporting a tie decorated with little bicycles, he's just referred to the Tour "kicking off" in Copenhagen.

The Denmark Grand Départ will be the most northerly depart for a Tour de France.

"I went to pick up my kids with a bike recently," says the prince.

Seems the bike really is embedded in everyday life in Denmark, "a small country on two wheels" as the on-screen caption has just put it.

11:42am Cobbles!

We're onto the route reveal now. 5 July will see 11 sections of cobbles on the stage from Lille, including five which have never appeared in Paris-Roubaix.

Something for the riders to look forward to there. Some of them probably still have mud behind their ears from this year's Paris-Roubaix.

Meanwhile, we've already spotted a likely candidate for the Etape route in the flyover at the start of the launch.

If we're right, get ready for 21 bends on the Alpe... We'll find out shortly.

11:51am: IT'S ALPE D'HUEZ!

Well stage 11 also looked a contender, but it is in fact Alpe d'Huez on the menu for L'Etape du Tour 2022!

And the date for the 2022 Etape is 10th July 2022 - 4 days before the pros.

The 2022 Etape will start in Briancon and follow the route of stage 12 of the 2022 Tour de France.

Col du Galibier, St Michel de Maurienne, and then uuuuup to Col de la Croix de Fer, Bourg d'Oisans, and a summit finish on Alpe d'Huez.

The distance is 166km, with 4750m climbing if I heard right - got distracted by the footage from 1986 of Hinault and Lemond finishing the stage together hand in hand.

Average speed was 32km/h. Doubt many Etape riders will be close to that, but it looks set to be a classic edition.

12:02pm: Total route 3328km

Congratulations if you guessed 3328km in the Colnago prize draw mentioned above.

That's the shortest Tour in over 10 years. I was well out with my guess of 3460km. But it's good news for Lachy if he decides to do another solo effort!

12:05pm: "Vive The Tours"

And that's a wrap - nice sign-off from Christian Prudhomme who finished with the customary "Vive le Tour", before adding "No - Vive the Tours ".

Time later to pore over the Tour route in more detail, but the Tour de France Femmes is a long overdue addition.

And how about that Etape du Tour route?

Just realised I totally missed the live link to those 100 Etape entries going on sale. Unless Prudhomme forgot to activate it - he did get in a bit of a muddle midway, thrown by getting the Crown Prince's son's age wrong on live TV. (If you missed it, he was presenting Prince Frederik with a game to give to his 16-year-old son.)

L'Etape Czech Republic by Tour de France je cyklistický závod pro veřejnost, který ti umožní zazávodit si ve stylu cyklistických profesionálů a užít si unikátní atmosféru legendární Tour de France. Zároveň je to oslava, svátek, festival cyklistiky, pro všechny malé i velké fanoušky Staré dámy.

Na pár hodin bude trasa závodu patřit jen cyklistům. Od prvního do posledního závodníka. Bezpečnost, luxus a pocit, který jinde nezažiješ. 

DIVÁCKÁ ATMOSFÉRA

Neorganizujeme jenom závod, ale oslavu sportu a pohybu. Ani Tour de France není jenom o závodnících, ale především o krajině, kterou projíždí a lidech, kteří v ní žijí. A my se je snažíme vtáhnout do děje, aby přišli a vytvořili závodníkům tu nejlepší kulisu. A třeba ukázali dětem, že sport je hodnota, o kterou má smysl usilovat a rozvíjet.

Ján Svorada, Martina Sáblíková, Zdeněk Štybar, Tomáš Bábek, Andy Schleck. To jsou jména, která se na start závodu v minulosti postavila. Loket na loket, kolo na kolo se všemi ostatními účastníky.

Co je série L´Etape by Tour de France

L'Etape by Tour de France je globální série závodů pod hlavičkou Tour de France zaměřená na cyklistiku pro veřejnost, které se účastní místní nadšenci i závodníci z celého světa. Jednotlivé závody se pravidelně konají v několika evropských zemích, Austrálii, Číně, Jihovýchodní Asii, Mexiku, USA a v zemích jižní Ameriky. Nejvíce účastníků bývá tradičně ve Francii (15 tis.), v Austrálii a Velké Británii (přes 3 tis.).
