Joss Stone … Performing In Every Country In The World

joss stone counting countries

Joss has traveled to 204 countries.  Joss Stone Counting Countries.

I have spoken to so many travel legends on Counting Countries, but this interview marks my first time speaking with a person, who gained their fame outside of the travel world.  Joss Stone is a multi-platinum artist who has won a Grammy.  But of course on this podcast, we focussed on her travel accomplishments.  Joss created the audacious project, Total World Tour, which entailed Joss performing in every country around the world.

I only learned about Joss at the beginning of 2019 when Thor Pedersen, former guest, shared with me that he saw Joss perform in North Korea.  With help from Thor and Simon Cockerell from Koryo Tours, I got Joss’s email.  What proceeded next was a 13-month email drip campaign.  Joss had an interest in being on Counting Countries but it was difficult to schedule.  I increased my efforts with self-sheltering during Covid assuming Joss might have more free time.  And my efforts were rewarded with an interview in early May.

I was quite hesitant to share with Joss that many of my interviews lasted over two hours.  Prior to the interview, Joss agreed to 45 minutes.  Thankfully, she extended this time several times during our conversation.  While our talk neared two hours, I still had dozens of questions left.  I will keep my fingers crossed for a future interview someday.

I would like to remind you that Untamed Borders supports Counting Countries.  Untamed Borders specializes in challenging locations like Afghanistan, Somalia, and Yemen.  Please consider Untamed Borders when the safety of travel improves.  James, a co-founder, speaks to me about my travels to Afghanistan with Untamed Borders.

Also, I would like to introduce Counting Countries Mini.  I am hosting live interviews with  Country Counters on my Instagram account, GlobalGaz.

Very very nice project… Very nice project indeed. It’s a shame that this did not get more media attention. I mean not that I follow the media much, so I would not have heard about it myself but my friends send me links when there is such news. I had only come across it briefly somewhere before. Whereas it should definitely have got much more coverage. I checked to see if it made the headlines in the main media outlets, nope; the only web search results are announcements in Joss’s own website and some local news. Such a shame, such a shame…

Same with Anthony Asael who went to every country working with school children, doing art. At least his project was sponsored by UNICEF but it did not get main stream media attention either. Instead, the likes of Lexie Alford make the news. One more stone added to the confirmation of what a crap world we live in.

Joss may not be very knowledgeable about the world and issues, I doubt she got to see much about the world to come to any understanding of it by the way she travelled, but what she says is so right, she has a magical talent, music, bringing people together and she is wise enough to use it. Plus, it is doubtful how much the people who travel “deeper” and “longer” have an idea about the world or any care for the people.

I share Joss’s view that it’s wrong for people to call it a world tour just by going to some countries. Even Elizabeth Gilbert has done a world tour after all, by going to three countries! Oh how the world of advertisement and media channels and promotes whatever they want and masses just buy it.

Plus, her message at the beginning of this interview was very important. That there are people who are content to just stay in their small corner of the world. That people who are constantly on the move may be the troubled ones in a way, unsatisfied with what they have. Of course there is a point to see, learn and experience the world, but her way of putting it “So sweet…” about her boyfriend going to London from Devon only at the age of 20, yet finding something wrong with herself, not being content to stay where she is instead of slamming the person who does not travel is such a refreshing look. It is important to note that people can gain the wisdom travellers gain by staying in the same place.

This podcast was also refreshing as well, taking a break from the vanity project travellers.

Ric, I’m really enjoying your podcast. I’m amazed at some of the places people have traveled too. I am an avid traveler and podcaster as well. My podcast is Zipping Around The World.com. If you are ever looking for a guest, I would be interested to be on your podcast. I could offer a view from almost 30 years of traveling, and wanting to get to new countries every year, but not sure I want to hit all 193.

' src=

Hi Dan…thanks for checking in. I will check out your podcast! Ric

Rick finally got around to listening to this…what an INSPIRING interview, I mean many of us are chasing the 193, but Joss has really made a big difference to the world through her travels, music and her foundation. This is just wonderful, she really is someone who gets amazing energy from her travels and gives out that energy too. Love love love this interview.

Glad you enjoyed as much as I did. I really thought she was an impressive person and came off so well for a lot of the reasons you pointed out.

Joss stone's every-country-in-the-world tour.

Not content on being a multi-million selling artist, Joss Stone is attempting to become the first person to play in every country in the world...

Multi-platinum selling artist Joss Stone  has just embarked on her most audacious project to date – going on a 'proper' world tour by playing a gig in every country on the planet.

Fresh after a gig in Indonesia , she talks to Peter Moore about how the tour is going and the challenges ahead.

Discover musical trips and festivals in our TripFinder

Can you tell us a little about the world tour idea?

Well, it all started because so many artists do "World Tours" but none of them yet has toured even half of it in one go. So I thought, now there's a challenge so we're going for it!

Is the plan to play in every country in the world?

Yep. That's it in a nutshell, every one.

Is it something that will get into the Guinness Book of World Records? If so, what is their criteria for a gig?

That's a good question, I'd hope it would get in there and I think that to be a gig it needs a minimum number of spectators and to be a certain length. I can't remember the specifics. I should probably check before we set out...

What made you want to undertake this project?

People told me that it couldn't be done and I don't like being told I can't do something because it's too difficult. And once I thought about it, I realised how unifying music can be and what a great message that would send out.

How long do you think it will take you?

It's going to take a couple of years in total, this is no small feat.

Will you seek out local musicians to play with? Check out the local music scene?

That's certainly on the cards, but in the main it will be me and my band.

You've already played in Indonesia and the Philippines. How was that? Did you have any adventures?

I love them both, in fact I recently went on holiday to Bali , it was just so beautiful!

Are you a big traveller? As Joss Stone, can you just grab a backpack and hit the road?

I have to travel so much with work that I don't often jet away for pleasure, when I get time off I just want to head back to my dogs and my family in Devon. That said, I can certainly just head off backpacker style, in fact a lot of this plan was concocted in the back of my campervan in Spain and France.

Which countries are you looking forward to visiting the most?

Oh, I couldn't express a preference there are so many places and they all have something new and wonderful to experience whether I've been their 100 times before or not at all.

Since Wanderlust interviewed Joss Stone, the singer went on to perform her Total World Tour until 2019, when, alas she was deported from Iran on the last stop of the tour.

Steve Down Talks Touring the World with Joss Stone and the Kemper Profiler

The UK-based session guitarist relies on the Profiler while performing in 200+ countries for Stone's expansive Total World Tour.

joss stone world tour countries

Steve Down is a UK-based session guitarist who currently tours with powerhouse soul and R&B singer, Joss Stone. A member of Stone’s live band since 2012, Down also plays with Scottish singer-songwriter Sandi Thom, and has worked alongside Jeff Beck and a host of other top shelf artists.

Down recently embarked with Stone on her most audacious project to date — The Total World Tour — in which she attempts to perform in over 200 countries. As any gigging guitarists can attest, backline gear quality can vary greatly from venue to venue, so traveling with a dynamic and reliable modeling amplifier like the Profiler has been a saving grace for the guitarist.

Below, Down discusses life on the road with Joss Stone, his live rig, and more.

Visit kemper-amps.com for the latest on Kemper, and for more on Steve Down, head over to stevedownmusic.com .

Where are you located?

I live in Exeter, about three hours away from London. I prefer to stay in a less busy place. I have a studio in my house where I do most of my remote sessions, as well as teach guitar lessons. However, whenever a more advanced setup is needed, I can take a 30 minute trip to my friend (and Joss Stone engineer) Christian Sennett’s studio.

How did you land the gig in Joss Stone's band?

Joss's parents were based close by to Exeter. Joss's mother Wendy set up a music bar, Mama Stones, to provide live music almost every day. They would invite bigger acts, but also had a house band, which I joined. Joss was of course in and out that place, so we got to know each other.

One day she needed a guitarist to do some bits and pieces for a TV promotion for her Soul Sessions 2 album in 2012. After that I was asked to do a bigger show in Paris. Then they invited me to join her Total World Tour — and it has been going since 2014.

I believe there are 34 countries left, which we will hopefully cover by the end of 2019, before we go back to more traditional touring schedules! The Kemper has definitely helped with traveling to all these places, where you have no idea what the backline will be. I also played on Water For Your Soul where I used a mixture of the Kemper and my Princeton amp.

Speaking of your Kemper, when did you come across the Profiler?

I have had it on my radar for a few years. Christian was banging on me to get one for ages, so I gave in to him and bought a unit in 2016. It was after a tour where the backline was utterly terrible. We played a beautiful tiny country called Bhutan. They just couldn't get backline together, so I ended up with a beaten up Marshall MG50 — more of an amp you would see in a secondary school's practice room. That's when I decided to get a Kemper.

Since then it has been a lifesaver for so many times. You can just plug it into the house system and it will give you perfect results every single time. And obviously it has become so useful for studio stuff, too. I have had innumerous sessions here and in other studios where it has become invaluable. It saves so much time. Normally I played through a Fender Twin Reverb — and if that's not the sound [the artist] wanted, I was stuffed because that's all I had.

So, the Fender Twin has been your amp for many years?

Yeah, I really like the red knob version with the 2x12” speaker setup. I have always been into Fender-ish stuff and also used Princetons. I really like that kind of ‘60s sound. Then eventually, there was this amp company Rift Amps ( riftamps.com ) that made me a custom amp. It had this mid-sixties look and two channels. Two cleans, no dirt: one channel being a Twin Reverb, the other being a Blackface. I worked with that amp for a while but obviously couldn't take it on tour with me. So I profiled it. Since then, to be honest, I have literally just used the Profiler.

Do you still use the Rift and Fender amps in the studio now?

Sometimes, but not really. There were even a couple of times where I fooled the producer.

One time I was booked to play with a group that had an Al Green kind of sound. I had a Höfner guitar and used a Fender Champ sound from the Kemper — I typically use the Tweed Pack by M.Britt profiles ( mbrittprofiles.com ) for this. So I told the producer, Christian Lohr, that I would do it with the Profiler. He said the result sounded too digital. He's such an analog guy and I knew he would be dead against it once he knew I was going down the digital path.  So I said “Fine, I'll use a Princeton.” Instead, I just tweaked a couple of parameters like the Tube Bias, Clarity and Definition, and sent the file back. He found it perfect. We laughed when I told him the truth later.

In short, most people are really happy with the sound of the Profiler, just like another producer I worked with, Lack of Afro, who is really into vintage analog sound.

Sometimes your eyes seem to fool you.

Yeah. If you know what you are hearing, you are more likely to say “No,” if, for whatever reason, you do not like digital sound. But if you do the blindfold test, you can easily be fooled. There are lots of examples online proving this.

What Profiles do you typically use?

For my work with Joss, I use my custom amp profiles and the M-Britt selection. I also enjoy the Fender Twin profile that comes with the Profiler. Then there is a Cornford Carrera profile that I use for jazz sessions, which is from the Kemper community. If I need a dirty channel I will use my Fulltone Fulldrive which was the result of some testing. I use a Bogner Ecstasy profile for the heavier stuff in Joss's band.

So your sound selection is not that big.

It's not. A lot of Joss's songs need a vintage clean tone that slightly breaks up. That's her sound. And I mainly play a Gibson ES-335. But there are a few songs that need quite a lot of heavy effects added to my basic sound. I have used the Crystal Delay a couple of times, for example in “Jetlag,” to create a really wide sound for the guitar. The stereo delays and modulation effects in the Profiler are brilliant. It really brings the sound you would create in a studio, out on to the road. Putting that in my sound has massively impressed me. There are three or four songs in the set where I need that. Also, the Wide Stereo EQ has been really useful for me.

Do you use any other external effects besides that Fulldrive?

Not at all. I went straight for the Profiler Remote and it works really well. In addition, I use a Dunlop expression pedal that is hooked up to the remote, and it handles all the volume and wah effects.

What is the exact stage routing?

The Profiler serves FOH in stereo. I use in-ears for monitoring. However, Joss also likes a little bit of guitar sound from the monitors. And I agree that a little bit of rumble on stage is quite nice. When there is a chance to use a flat EQ speaker or a cabinet of my choice, I'll use that, since I own the powered version of the Profiler. All options covered, just in case.

Do you tweak your Profiles in order to match the guitars you use?

Yes, my two main guitars are a Nash Telecaster and a Gibson ES-335, which is a lot hotter. So when I switch guitars, I'll also change the Profile. This is really useful because I don't have to go the unit to adjust it. The changes are mostly gain-related to level out what goes to the FOH. I also tweak the clarity and definition, and obviously the EQ.

It seems to make tour managers’ lives a lot easier when organizing backline. The Profiler is so small, it goes into hand luggage, and so I'll arrive with all my sounds. For me, the guarantee that I can get the same tone each time is great. And I usually also go through all the profiles with the FOH technician before a tour so that he can have specific presets ready that match these sounds. It also makes his life easier. So, the Profiler really bridges the gap between the musician and the technician. Actually, I think it enabled guitarists and engineers to be friends again!

Is there typical signal flow in your profiles?

I do use a little bit of noise gate. For a few songs I have a compressor going to level my sound to not pop out the mix too much. In other situations I would take that out to achieve a more vintage sound. I also use the tremolo and rotary sounds in the Profiler, a little chorus, as well as the delays and the stereo wide EQ. Those options are usually all available in my programs as options on the remote in case I need them.

If I need a slight boost, I turn on my Fulldrive pedal. Sometimes I also use the boost within the Profiler. But in other cases, such as “I Put a Spell on You,” where the guitar is quite prominent with a humongous sound, I'll switch to a different profile with more gain and a bigger sound.

How does the Profiler translate your style of playing?

It does a brilliant job. It just responds to all of the dynamics that come from my fingers or when rolling the volume knob — just like a normal amplifier and just as I would expect it. I haven't struggled with it at all. Even when I first got the Profiler, it didn't take me very long to get used to it. At first, I used the profiles that were on the unit before I made my own.

No one has noticed a loss of quality. Actually, a lot of people actually prefer my new setup and I myself even find the clarity to be better in many cases. This is especially true when I put my acoustic guitar through the Profiler. I have specific profiles to cover that, which treat the signal almost like a DI, but add stereo effects to it.

Is there anything you would change about the Profiler?

I have had no issues with the Profiler at all, except for one thing: a few times the Remote wouldn't switch on. We sourced that to be a power issue in certain environments with fluctuating power supplies.

Other than that, I have two wishes. I would appreciate to have a little bit of additional gain at hand when using the Profiler with acoustic guitars, where I can turn the amp- and cabinet-simulation off. It could also be a specific acoustic setting. Another thing that might be great would be the possibility to download settings for the different effects. Being able to get a bigger choice of stomps would also be nice.

Syria? Check. North Korea? Check. Joss Stone's World Tour With A Difference Continues

Rachel McGrath

Going on a world tour is nothing new, but singer Joss Stone is giving a whole new meaning to the phrase, by performing in every single country on the planet.

The Kent-born songstress started the ambitious project five years ago, starting with gigs in Morocco, Swaziland, Tunisia and South Africa, before moving onto Australia and New Zealand.

Joss performing in Cuba in January 2019

But not all destinations are easy to get to, or perform in, which is why Joss’ latest posts – about making it to North Korea – are attracting a lot of attention.

Earlier this week, she revealed her intention to enter the country, which has famously strict visa requirements, on Instagram.

“We won’t have any WiFi or phone signal whilst we are there,” she added, telling fans to follow her tour guide on Instagram instead. “Simon [ Cockerell] is helping us make this trip happen. He is very knowledgeable about North Korea and its history having been there over a hundred times he is definitely the best person to listen to on the subject as far as we are concerned.

“In just one meeting over a cup of tea he dispelled many myths. So like we do in many country’s we shall blindly and happily follow our new leader! :) we are all very excited to see this part of the world.”

Yesterday, Simon then shared pictures of Joss completing her mission and performing in a bar:

Brits are permitted to visit the country, though there are warnings from the Foreign Office in place, while US authorities advise their citizens not to travel there.

Last month, Joss managed to perform in Syria after crossing the border while stuffed in the back of a car, wrapped in a blanket from a hotel.

Sharing a video online, she wrote: “It was a little scary crossing the border as of course we have absolutely no idea what might transpire, we just have to trust the people on the ground that are advising us and looking after us.

“This was the beginning, it was cold and wet but also so nice to meet such welcoming kind people. #syria deserves not to be ignored #kurdistan deserves not to be ignored.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joss Stone (@jossstone) on Mar 3, 2019 at 2:24pm PST

She continued: “There is a lot of hurt here coming from all sorts of different directions.

“I heard that isis surrendered yesterday but that doesn’t mean it’s all over for the Syrian people or the Kurdish people.

“It is so complicated, a story I’m not in a position to tell you but all I can say is that I have learnt a lot from my short time there and I hope that peace will come to everyone on all sides soon.”

So far, Joss has managed to play over 175 countries, and counting...

The Soul Sessions went platinum and gold in 17 markets and made the 2004 Mercury Prize shortlist. In total, she has released six studio albums, with her seventh currently in production.

Of those six, four have consecutively reached the Top 10 on Billboard's 200. She has sold over 14 million albums worldwide, won two BRIT awards and one GRAMMY Award.

Despite her many successes Joss' world was rocked in 2013 when two men were jailed for plotting to kidnap and behead her.

At the time she said: 'It was a bit harsh and a little bit odd.'

Joss has juggled her music career with her extensive charity work, including her role as a Sentebale charity ambassador.

The charity supports the mental health and wellbeing of children in Lesotho and Botswana who have been affected by HIV.

Joss Stone is a Grammy and Brit award-winning artist who released her star-making critically acclaimed debut album, The Soul Sessions, in 2003, aged just 16. Since then, she has released nine studio albums which have sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

Stone has kept the company of musical royalty, performing alongside legendary artists such as James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Sting, Van Morrison and Melissa Etheridge. In addition, she has collaborated with and contributed to albums for many of the world’s finest musicians, including Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, and Damien Marley, and garnered over one billion streams in the US alone.

Stone has been known to experiment with different styles in her own work as well, and her albums feature an exciting patchwork of various influences, creating a catalogue characterised by the fusion of her powerhouse soul vocals with reggae, world music, and hip-hop soundscapes. A double Brit Award and Grammy winning artist, Joss Stone is without question among the most iconic soul singers of the modern era, a preternaturally gifted vocalist and songwriter whose remarkable career now spans two decades with no sign of slowing down.

From 2003’s internationally acclaimed, chart-topping debut album, The Soul Sessions, to making history with 2004’s RIAA platinum certified Mind Body & Soul as the then-youngest-ever female artist to top the UK Albums Chart. The Kent born, Devon based artist, who has recently split her time between the UK and the U.S, has crafted eight highly accomplished solo albums, not to mention soundtrack hits, film and tv appearances, and collaborations with a who’s-who of music royalty, including Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, Nas, Raphael Saadiq, Sheila E, and many more. Four more acclaimed albums followed, Introducing Joss Stone in 2007, which marked the highest ever entry, at No.2, on the US album charts by a British female, Colour Me Free in 2009 and Soul Sessions 2 in 2012.

The year prior, saw Stone’s fifth album and first full-length collaboration with Dave Stewart, LP1, which made a top 10 debut on the overall Billboard 200 upon its July 2011 release — Stone’s third consecutive top 10 album on the U.S.charts. LP1 “conjures the spirit of another supplanted smokey Brit songstress in the steamy South: Dusty in Memphis,” wrote Paste. “Where Stone stands out — as producer Dave Stewart realises — is in her restraint…In a world where machined dance fodder, rap-deckled pop and lumbering rawk dominates, a genuine article of soul music — especially one where the thick bass, tumbling Wurlitzer and bright guitars set the tone — is a joyous noise, indeed.” LP1 was followed that same year by the arrival of SuperHeavy, the all-superstar combo comprising Stone, Stewart, Mick Jagger, Damian Marley, and A.R. Rahman. Co-produced by Stewart and Jagger, the group’s self-titled debut album was met by acclaim from Rolling Stone, which declared it to be “terrifically fun…the spirit is dazzling” in a four-starred rave review.

Stone’s seventh studio album, 2015’s Water For Your Soul, saw her pushing her artistic boundaries to encompass diverse elements of world music influences. The acclaimed collection debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Reggae Albums” chart and eventually proved the best-selling current reggae album of 2015, once again displaying Stone’s uniquely successful gift for bridging musical genres.

Over the last decade, in addition to writing and recording new music, Stone embarked on her audacious Total World Tour in 2014, performing gigs and collaborating with local artists in over 200 countries. In addition, she also created The Joss Stone Foundation to work alongside a global network of charities and partners to provide solutions and deliver locally in cultures and communities around the world. She completed this mammoth undertaking in 2019. Following that Stone has launched a successful podcast “A Cuppa Happy,” along with a her Facebook Live cooking show “Cooking With Joss,” and in February 2021 she won season two of the smash hit competition series The Masked Singer UK, dressed as a sausage! In January 2022 she co-headlined a US tour with fellow Brit, Corinne Bailey Rae, leading up to the release of her 8th album in February 2022, the critically acclaimed “Never Forget My Love,” produced by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, and written by Joss and Dave at Bay Street Studios, Bahamas and recorded at Blackbird Studios, Nashville.

This was followed in late 2022 by her first ever Xmas album, ‘Merry Xmas, Love,’ released through Steve Greenberg’s S- Curve/Hollywood Records, reuniting her with the man who signed her for her debut Soul Sessions album. 2022 also saw the momentous arrival of Joss’ second child Shack, following the birth of her first child, daughter Violet, the previous year. 2023 is already shaping up to be an exciting year with further shows planned and the West End debut of The Time Traveller’s Wife musical, which she co-wrote music and lyrics for with long time collaborator, Dave Stewart.

Joss Stone’s Total World Tour

joss stone world tour countries

Dancing across the stage, long blonde hair twirling, and barefooted no less, Joss Stone is a mesmerizing presence at Montreal’s Métropolis club.

The 28-year-old from Devon, England returned to Canada with her six-piece band for the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal 2015 delivering an array of hits like “You Had Me” and “Fell In Love With A Boy” which have helped her sell more than 12-million records worldwide.

And those figures will only rise when she releases her seventh studio album on July 31: a reggae inspired R&B record “Water For Your Soul”. Stone credits hanging out with Damian Marley in Los Angeles as the impetus to explore these sounds, and she has set an ambitious target of completing what she calls a “Total World Tour”: gigging in every single country on the planet.

Stone has sung duets with such musical luminaries as Elton John, Sting, Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox , and Melissa Etheridge, and won a Grammy with John Legend. But fame and fortune comes with a price. Four years ago she was the target of a chilling kidnap/murder plot. Fortunately, the villains were caught and they are serving jail time.

“Was that four years ago now? Goodness me,” she declares. “It kind of affects you in that you lock the door instead of leaving the door open. Things like that. You know I don’t sit up at night rocking. I can’t live my life like that. I have to continue on and keep positive and hope that people don’t try to kill me anymore. What can you do? Not a lot.”

Recently, however, Stone’s full focus has returned to the world tour and checking countries off her list. “I was in Japan [recently],” she recalls. “‘How the hell did I get here?’ And I realized the answer to my question was ‘I am here because I make music and that is the only reason I am here. That’s how I can connect with these people. I thought, ‘You know what? Let’s do a gig in every country in the world.’”

Not without its challenges, the tour has forced Stone to get creative with her scheduling, such as the time she visited Africa last fall. “There was one moment in Swaziland that was amazing,” she says. “We were going to be in Lesotho, which is pretty close. I said ‘can you sort out of a gig in Swaziland?’ And they said ‘you know what Joss? There is absolutely nowhere that you can play at all, nowhere.’ Luckily we found this venue [called] House on Fire and oh, my god, it was like walking into Aladdin’s cave,” says Stone. “It was the most unusual venue I have played in my life.”

Two days before the joyful Métropolis gig in Montreal (which was filled to capacity), she played a show in Liechtenstein, taking her tally to 44 nations. “We have done it in bits and bobs,” she laughs. “It’s kind of hard to make it work—there are so many countries where it costs such an amount of money to get there. I try to make it works so it’s not too ridiculous. And when I can have my full band, I do.”
