Curation x  connection.

We run laid-back group trips for young professionals that are hassle-free (like a vacation) but have the adventure and cultural enrichment of solo travel.

Not only do we spend countless hours planning the best itineraries, we try to curate travel groups of similar individuals  to give everyone the best experience possible. We even send out a roster of everyone on the trip, so you know who your travel buddies will be.

Let us handle the logistics while you get lost in the beauty of travel - in the daring feats, the funny encounters, the mouthwatering cuisines, the novelty, and the unknown.

These are not perfectly pre-scripted, every minute scheduled "group tours." You won't find any matching hats or follow-the-flag group travel nonsense here. We don't script. We plan. So you don't have to. And then we have a really, really good time.

We invite you to join one of our trips, embrace the adventure, and make memories (and friends) that will last a lifetime.

For the Love of Travel | Fun group trips for young adults, young professionals and 20 somethings. Meet new people, explore new places, try new things, have fun.

WHY SOLO TRAVEL?

Traveling alone leads to improved confidence, independence, and self-discovery. Although Under30Experiences hooks you up with a detailed itinerary, local guide, and a fantastic group of travelers, taking the first step to leave the country alone is a HUGE accomplishment! When you travel alone you can expect to learn a lot about yourself. You'll be surprised to find how easy it is to open up and start conversations with others. Solo travel also gives you the unique opportunity to reinvent yourself. Gone are all the preconceived notions about you from your peers back home... traveling abroad gives you a fresh start.

Having the courage to step outside your comfort zone, face your fears, and challenge yourself can help you learn more about yourself and the world. However, it is common for some women to feel nervous or intimidated about traveling solo. ‍ We’re here to help! Under30Experiences gives you the tools to be confident, smart, and informed while traveling abroad alone for the first time. Recent Female Solo Travel Stats: A recent travel industry study found that 86 percent of women state that they are not afraid to travel regardless of what is going on in the world today; 73 percent of women feel that travel has made them stronger; and 69 percent of women draw inspiration from travel. How many women are on your trips? On average about 75% of our travelers are women. The majority of those are traveling solo. Will my roommate be the same gender? Yes! Same gender roommates are guaranteed unless you request to room with a friend or significant other.

Don’t let your fears or thoughts of loneliness keep you from traveling the world! Under30Experiences is the perfect option for your first international solo trip, here’s why... Safety: ‍ Does the thought of being alone abroad make you nervous about personal safety? ‍ Safety is our number one priority, and we have years of experience leading groups all over the globe. In fact, many of the countries we visit consistently top the top destinations for solo travelers. Plus, all our Trip Leaders are First Aid & CPR certified, and have been routinely trained in emergency preparedness. We try to form a "team" environment among our groups where we all look out for one another... as they say, there is strength in numbers. And, you'll be happy to know we have a zero-tolerance rule for bullying, harassment, and hate speech. Traveling internationally can be intimidating and time-consuming. You can leave the planning to us, as we organize activities to maximize your itinerary. It’s our job to be experts in these areas, have the local contacts, and give you the trip of a lifetime! Our Trip Leaders and Regional Managers are experienced in the local areas where we travel, have local connections, emergency contacts, and vet our activities for quality and safety carefully. ‍ Like-Minded Travelers: ‍ Solo travel doesn't have to mean being alone. ‍ It’s normal for the idea of traveling alone to bring up worries of loneliness. By traveling with Under30Experiences you are guaranteed to meet a group of up to eighteen travelers, both male & female. The majority of our travelers come alone and are eager to meet other young adults who share a passion for travel and an itch for adventure. Being "like-minded" means having similar values and a love for travel... but we hope you'll find our community full of people with different thoughts, ideas, and backgrounds who bring their own unique experiences to our groups. ‍ Peace of Mind: ‍ Sometimes the hardest part about traveling solo is ensuring your loved ones that you are going to be safe. Letting them know that you’ll be in good hands will help them sleep at night--and you may even find a new wave of support!

How likely are you to talk to a group of strangers while you're traveling with friends or family? Probably not so likely. Traveling with Under30Experiences is perfect for solo travelers because you meet new people right from the start. You don't need to worry about coming alone because a vibrant group of travelers is waiting for you at the airport when you arrive (most of whom are also traveling solo). ‍ After your trip, you become part of our travel community! In our alumni community you get access to exclusive pre-sale opportunities, weekend domestic trips, and an online platform to share travel resources, career opportunities, and more! Travel Tips for Young Adults: How to Explore the World on a Budget

travel tips for young adults

Are you a young adult looking to embark on a travel adventure? Traveling can be one of the most exhilarating experiences in life, but it can also be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of travel tips specifically for young adults to help you make the most of your trip.

First and foremost, it’s important to plan ahead. Research your destination and make a list of must-see attractions , restaurants, and activities. This will not only help you make the most of your time, but it can also save you money by allowing you to take advantage of discounts and deals.

Additionally, consider traveling during the off-season when prices are lower and crowds are smaller. This can help you stretch your budget further and allow you to experience your destination in a more authentic way.

Planning Your Trip

Travel Tips for Young Adults

Before embarking on your trip, it’s important to do your research. This includes researching your destination, the best time to visit, visa requirements , local customs, and more.

You can use travel guides, online forums, and social media to get insights from other travelers who have visited the same destination. This will help you to plan your itinerary, budget, and activities.

Budgeting is an essential part of planning your trip. It’s important to determine how much money you can afford to spend on your trip and allocate your funds accordingly.

This includes budgeting for transportation, accommodation, food, activities, and other expenses. You should also factor in unexpected costs like medical emergencies or lost luggage.

To help you stick to your budget, consider using travel apps that can help you find the best deals on flights, accommodation, and activities. You can also use travel credit cards that offer rewards and discounts on travel-related expenses.

When it comes to accommodation, consider staying in hostels or Airbnb rentals, which can be more affordable than hotels. You can also save money on food by cooking your meals or eating at local markets and street vendors.

Planning your trip is an important step to ensure a successful and enjoyable travel experience. By doing your research and budgeting effectively, you can make the most out of your trip without breaking the bank.

Choosing Your Destination

When it comes to choosing your destination, it’s important to consider what you’re looking for in a trip. Are you seeking adventure or relaxation?

Do you want to be surrounded by a community or enjoy some solitude? Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting your destination.

Adventure vs. Relaxation

If you’re looking for adventure, consider destinations that offer outdoor activities like hiking, surfing, or skiing. National parks, mountain towns , and beach destinations can provide plenty of opportunities for adventure.

On the other hand, if you’re seeking relaxation, you may want to look for destinations that offer spa treatments, beaches, or scenic views. Consider destinations that offer a slower pace of life, like small towns or rural areas.

Safety should always be a top priority when choosing a destination. Research the crime rates, political climate, and weather conditions of your potential destination before booking your trip.

Consider destinations with a low crime rate and stable political climate. Additionally, make sure to purchase travel insurance to protect yourself in case of an emergency.

If you’re interested in meeting new people and experiencing different cultures, consider destinations that offer a strong sense of community. Hostels, cultural centers, and volunteer programs can provide opportunities to connect with locals and other travelers.

You may also want to look for destinations that offer festivals or events that bring people together.

Remember, as a young adult, you have the freedom to choose your own adventure. Consider what you’re looking for in a trip and do your research to find the perfect destination for you. Happy travels!

Getting Around

As a young adult on a trip, you want to make sure you can get around easily and efficiently. Here are some tips on how to navigate your way around your destination.

Public Transportation

Using public transportation is a great way to save money and get around like a local. Most cities have a public transportation system that includes buses, trains, and subways.

Before you arrive, research the public transportation options available in your destination. You can usually find this information on the city’s official website or through a quick online search.

Once you arrive, purchase a map or download a transportation app to help you navigate. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the fare system and ticket options.

Some cities have a day pass or a reloadable card that can save you money if you plan on using public transportation frequently.

Car Rentals

If you prefer the freedom of driving yourself, renting a car may be a good option. However, it’s important to do your research before you arrive. Make sure you have a valid driver’s license and check the minimum age requirement for renting a car. Some rental companies require the driver to be at least 25 years old.

When choosing a rental car, consider the size and fuel efficiency. A smaller car may be easier to navigate in crowded cities, and a fuel-efficient car can save you money on gas. Make sure you understand the rental agreement, including insurance coverage and any additional fees.

Before hitting the road, familiarize yourself with the local traffic laws and parking regulations. Some cities have strict parking rules, and you don’t want to end up with a parking ticket or towed car.

Whether you choose public transportation or a rental car, make sure you plan ahead and understand your options. With a little research and preparation, getting around in a new city can be a breeze.

Accommodations

When it comes to accommodations, there are a few options available to young adults. Here are some tips to help you find the best place to stay during your travels.

Hotels and Hostels

Hotels can be a great option if you’re looking for a comfortable and convenient place to stay. However, they can also be quite expensive, especially if you’re traveling on a budget. If you do decide to stay in a hotel, consider booking in advance to get the best rates.

Hostels are a popular choice among young adults, especially those traveling solo. They offer affordable accommodations and the opportunity to meet other travelers.

However, keep in mind that you’ll be sharing a room with others, so it’s important to be respectful of their space.

Staying with Friends and Family

Staying with friends and family can be a great way to save money on accommodations. If you have friends or family members in the area you’re visiting, consider reaching out to them to see if they’d be willing to host you for a few nights.

However, it’s important to be respectful of their space and their schedules. Make sure to communicate with them in advance to let them know when you’ll be arriving and when you’ll be leaving. And don’t forget to show your appreciation by offering to help out with chores or cooking a meal.

Vacation Rentals

Vacation rentals, such as Airbnb or VRBO, can be a great option if you’re looking for a more home-like experience. They offer the convenience of a hotel with the comfort of a home. Plus, they can be more affordable than a hotel, especially if you’re traveling with a group.

However, it’s important to do your research before booking a vacation rental. Make sure to read reviews from previous guests and check the location to make sure it’s in a safe and convenient area.

No matter where you choose to stay, make sure to do your research and book in advance to get the best rates. And don’t forget to pack a travel pillow and eye mask to help you get a good night’s sleep!

Food and Drink

travelling young adults

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your culinary adventures:

Street Food

Street food can be a great way to taste local cuisine and save money while traveling. However, it’s important to be cautious when eating street food to avoid getting food poisoning.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy street food safely:

  • Look for stalls with a high turnover of food to ensure that the ingredients are fresh.
  • Avoid stalls that have unhygienic conditions or are located near busy roads.
  • Make sure that the food is cooked thoroughly and served hot.
  • If you’re not sure about the cleanliness of the utensils, bring your own or use disposable cutlery.
  • Always wash your hands before eating.

Food tours are a great way to learn about the local cuisine and culture. They can also be a fun way to meet other travelers and locals.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your food tour experience:

  • Research the tour company beforehand to ensure that they have positive reviews and are reputable.
  • Let the tour guide know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions you have.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the food and the culture behind it.
  • Try everything at least once, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally eat.
  • Take notes or photos of the food so you can remember what you tried and liked.
  • Drink bottled water instead of tap water to avoid getting sick.
  • Avoid ice cubes in drinks, as they may be made from tap water.
  • Be cautious when trying new foods, especially if they are raw or undercooked.
  • If you’re unsure about the safety of a particular food or drink, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid it.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the local cuisine while staying healthy and safe during your travels.

Activities and Attractions

When it comes to activities and attractions, there are plenty of options for young adults looking to explore new places.

Here are some suggestions for hiking and outdoor activities, as well as cultural and historical attractions to check out on your next trip.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

If you enjoy outdoor activities, hiking is a great way to explore new destinations while getting some exercise. Many national parks and nature reserves offer hiking trails that range from easy to challenging.

Some popular hiking destinations include:

  • Yosemite National Park in California
  • Zion National Park in Utah
  • Banff National Park in Canada
  • Torres del Paine National Park in Chile

In addition to hiking, there are other outdoor activities to consider, such as:

  • Kayaking or canoeing
  • Rock climbing
  • Surfing or paddleboarding
  • Skiing or snowboarding

Cultural and Historical Attractions

If you’re interested in learning about the history and culture of a destination, there are plenty of attractions to explore. Some popular cultural and historical attractions include:

  • Museums: Many cities have museums that showcase art, history, and science. Some popular museums include the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., the Louvre in Paris, and the British Museum in London.
  • Landmarks: Landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome, and the Great Wall of China are popular attractions that offer a glimpse into a destination’s history and culture.
  • Festivals: Attending a festival is a great way to experience a destination’s culture. Some popular festivals include Oktoberfest in Germany, the Holi Festival in India, and the Carnival in Brazil.

No matter what your interests are, there are plenty of activities and attractions to explore on your next trip. Just be sure to plan ahead and do your research to make the most of your experience.

Staying Safe and Healthy

When traveling as a young adult, it’s important to prioritize your safety and health. Here are some tips to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Travel Insurance

Before embarking on your trip, make sure to invest in travel insurance. This can provide you with peace of mind and financial protection in case of emergencies, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Research different travel insurance options and choose one that best fits your needs and budget.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial when traveling, especially if you’re in a hot and humid climate. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Bring a reusable water bottle with you and refill it whenever possible. In addition, avoid drinking tap water in countries where it’s unsafe to do so. Stick to bottled water or bring a water filtration system with you.

Stay in Touch with Loved Ones

It’s important to stay in touch with loved ones while traveling, especially if you’re traveling solo. Make sure to share your itinerary with someone back home and check in with them regularly.

Consider investing in a portable charger or extra battery pack for your phone in case of emergencies. In addition, research the local emergency numbers and keep them saved in your phone.

By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and healthy trip while traveling as a young adult. Remember to prioritize your well-being and take the necessary precautions to avoid any potential risks.

Packing and Gear

When it comes to traveling, packing can be one of the most stressful parts of the journey. To make things easier, here are some packing tips and gear recommendations for young adults like you.

Packing Tips

The first step in packing for any trip is to make a packing list. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t forget anything important.

When creating your list, consider the length of your trip, the weather at your destination, and any activities you have planned.

One of the best packing tips is to use packing cubes. These small, lightweight bags help you stay organized and make it easy to find what you need without having to dig through your entire suitcase. Plus, they can help you save space by compressing your clothes.

Another packing tip is to roll your clothes instead of folding them. This not only saves space but also helps prevent wrinkles. And don’t forget to pack versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits.

Backpacking Gear

If you’re planning a backpacking trip, you’ll need some specific gear to make your journey more comfortable. A good backpack is essential, and you should choose one that fits your body well and has enough space for all your gear.

Other backpacking gear essentials include a sleeping bag, tent, and camping stove. You’ll also want to pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing and a good pair of hiking boots.

When it comes to backpacking gear, it’s important to invest in quality items that will last. However, you don’t have to break the bank to get good gear. Look for sales and discounts, and consider buying used gear to save money.

In conclusion, packing and gear are important aspects of any trip. By following these packing tips and investing in quality backpacking gear, you can make your travels more comfortable and enjoyable.

However, it can also be overwhelming and anxiety-inducing, especially if it’s your first time. Here are some tips to help make your solo travel experience more enjoyable and stress-free.

Keep an Open Mind

One of the best things about solo travel is the opportunity to meet new people and experience different cultures. Keep an open mind and be willing to step out of your comfort zone.

Strike up conversations with locals and fellow travelers, try new foods, and participate in local activities . You never know what amazing experiences you might have or what new friends you might make.

Be Flexible

While it’s good to have a rough itinerary, don’t be too rigid with your plans. Unexpected things can happen, and you don’t want to miss out on opportunities because you’re too stuck to your schedule.

Leave room for spontaneity and be willing to change your plans if something better comes up.

Insider Knowledge

Do your research before you go. Read up on the destination you’re visiting, learn about the local customs and etiquette, and research the best places to eat, drink, and visit.

Having insider knowledge will not only help you make the most of your trip, but it will also help you blend in with the locals and avoid looking like a tourist.

Establishing a routine can help you feel more comfortable and in control while traveling solo. Whether it’s going for a morning run, practicing yoga, or reading a book before bed, find something that makes you feel grounded and stick to it.

Having a routine can also help alleviate anxiety and make you feel more at home in an unfamiliar place.

Traveling solo as a young adult can be an incredible experience that allows you to grow and gain independence. By keeping an open mind, being flexible, doing your research, and establishing a routine, you can make the most of your trip and have a memorable experience .

Making the Most of Your Trip

As a young adult, you want to make the most of your travel experience without breaking the bank. Here are some tips to help you save money, get off the beaten path, and stay connected with social media.

Traveling can be expensive, but there are ways to save money and still have a great time. Here are some tips:

  • Look for deals on flights and accommodations. Use websites like Kayak and Airbnb to compare prices and find the best deals.
  • Travel during the off-season. Prices are often lower, and you’ll avoid the crowds.
  • Use public transportation instead of taxis or rental cars. It’s cheaper and a great way to see the city.
  • Eat like a local. Street food is often cheaper and more authentic than restaurants.
  • Pack light and avoid baggage fees. Only bring what you need and use a carry-on if possible.

Get Off the Beaten Path

If you want to experience the true culture of a place, you need to get off the beaten path. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Explore neighborhoods that are less touristy. You’ll find hidden gems and get a better sense of what life is really like in the city.
  • Take a walking tour with a local guide. They can show you places that you might not find on your own.
  • Visit markets and festivals. You’ll get a taste of local food and culture.
  • Go hiking or cycling. You’ll see amazing views and get some exercise at the same time.

Stay in Touch with Social Media

Staying connected with social media can enhance your travel experience in many ways.

Here are some tips:

  • Use Instagram to find the best photo spots and get inspiration for your trip.
  • Follow local bloggers and influencers for recommendations on where to eat and what to do.
  • Use Facebook groups to connect with other travelers and get advice on where to go and what to see.
  • Share your experiences on social media to inspire others and keep memories of your trip.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your travel experience and have an amazing time without breaking the bank.

Volunteering and Giving Back

As a young adult, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact in the communities you visit while traveling. Volunteering is a great way to give back and make a difference in the world. Here are some tips to get started:

Look for Volunteer Opportunities

Research volunteer opportunities in the areas you plan to visit. There are many organizations that offer volunteer programs for travelers.

You can find opportunities to help with conservation efforts, teach English, work on community projects, and more. Check out websites like Workaway, which connects volunteers with organizations in need.

Pack Donations

Consider packing extra supplies or donations to give to local communities. This could include school supplies, clothing, or even toys for children.

Check with local organizations to see what items are most needed. Not only will you be helping those in need, but you’ll also be traveling lighter on your return trip.

Choose Responsible Volunteering

Be mindful of the impact your volunteering has on the community. Choose organizations that prioritize responsible and sustainable volunteering practices.

Some organizations may prioritize the experience of the volunteer over the needs of the community. Look for programs that prioritize the needs of the community and work with local organizations to ensure that your volunteering is making a positive impact.

Attend Local Events

Attending local events is a great way to support the community and learn about local culture. Look for festivals, markets, and other events that allow you to interact with locals and learn about their way of life. By attending these events, you are supporting the local economy and showing your appreciation for the community.

Final Thoughts

Traveling as a young adult is an exhilarating and transformative experience. It’s a time when you can spread your wings, explore new horizons, and create lifelong memories. To make the most of your journey, here are a few fun and friendly travel tips.

Firstly, embrace spontaneity. Leave room for unexpected adventures and serendipitous moments. Don’t be afraid to wander off the beaten path and discover hidden gems. Some of the best memories are made when you least expect them.

Secondly, pack light and smart. Traveling with a heavy suitcase can be a drag. Opt for versatile clothing items that you can mix and match, and don’t forget the essentials like a reusable water bottle and a power bank for your gadgets.

Next, connect with locals. Engaging with locals can give you a deeper understanding of the culture and enhance your travel experience. Strike up conversations, ask for recommendations, and be open to new friendships. You never know what kind of incredible stories and insights you’ll uncover.

Additionally, step out of your comfort zone. Traveling is all about personal growth and pushing your boundaries. Try new activities, taste local cuisine, learn a few basic phrases in the local language, and challenge yourself to embrace the unfamiliar. You’ll be amazed at how much you can learn about yourself and the world around you.

Lastly, stay open-minded. Each destination has its own unique charm and quirks. Embrace the differences and approach every encounter with an open mind. Remember, the world is a diverse and beautiful place, and your travel experiences will be all the richer for it.

So, fellow young adventurer, get ready to embark on a journey of a lifetime. Embrace the unknown, create unforgettable memories, and let the world be your playground.

Safe travels and enjoy every moment of your incredible adventure!

Ready, Set, Go! 20 Essential Travel Tips For Young Adults

Travel Tips For Young Adults

Traveling as a young adult can be one of the most exhilarating experiences in life. Whether you’re embarking on a gap year, backpacking through Europe, or exploring your own country, travel can broaden your horizons, expose you to new cultures, and help you develop independence and resilience.

However, traveling also comes with its own set of challenges, from budget constraints and language barriers to safety concerns and cultural differences.

To help you make the most of your travel experience, here are 20 travel tips for young adults:

Table of Contents

Planning ahead is crucial when it comes to travel, especially if you’re on a tight budget or have limited time. Research your destination, including visa requirements, weather, local customs, and recommended vaccinations. Book your accommodation and transportation in advance, and create a rough itinerary that allows for flexibility and spontaneity.

Part of planning ahead is to book your accommodation way before your trip. Booking accommodation in advance can help you save money and ensure you have a place to stay when you arrive. Use websites like Booking.com, Hostelworld, or Airbnb to find affordable and safe options. Consider the location, amenities, and reviews when choosing your accommodation.

Packing light is one of the most important skills for any traveler, as it can save you time, money, and stress. Choose versatile clothing and shoes that can be mixed and matched, and consider using packing cubes or compression bags to maximize space. Leave unnecessary items at home, and pack only the essentials.

Staying safe is a top priority when you’re traveling, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar environment. Typically, young adults will choose locations known to be safe for travel, but sometimes remote work may take you to areas you are unsure of.

Be aware of your surroundings, avoid dangerous areas or situations, and carry your valuables close to your body. Consider purchasing a money belt or neck pouch to secure your cash, passport, and credit cards.

If travelers feel that they are in trouble while traveling, they should immediately reach out to local authorities, such as the police or emergency services, for help. It’s important to research the emergency contact numbers for the country or region you are traveling to before you depart so that you can quickly access help if needed.

In addition, travelers can also reach out to their country’s embassy or consulate in the destination country for assistance. Embassies and consulates can provide a range of services to citizens traveling abroad, such as emergency travel documents, assistance with medical or legal issues, and information on local resources and services.

Young adults from the United States can always find an embassy near them .

It’s also a good idea for travelers to stay in contact with their friends and family back home while traveling and to share their travel plans and itinerary with someone they trust. This way, if something goes wrong, someone back home will know where they are and can help to alert authorities or provide assistance.

Be flexible

Being flexible is key to enjoying your travel experience, as unexpected delays, changes, and challenges are bound to arise. Embrace the unknown, be open to new experiences, and adjust your plans accordingly. Consider using travel apps like Skyscanner or Google Maps to help you navigate through places when lost and try to stay organized.

Learn the local language

Learning the local language is a great way to connect with the local culture and people and can also make your travel experience smoother and more enjoyable. Learn some basic phrases and vocabulary, and practice speaking with locals whenever possible. Consider using language-learning apps like Duolingo or Babbel to improve your skills.

Take care of your health

Taking care of your health is important when you’re traveling, as changes in climate, food, and lifestyle can affect your physical and mental well-being. Stay hydrated, eat nutritious food, and get enough sleep. Carry a basic first-aid kit with essential medications and supplies, and consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.

Be respectful of the local culture

Being respectful of the local culture is essential when you’re traveling, as it shows that you value and appreciate the local customs, traditions, and people. Research the local etiquette, dress appropriately, and avoid behaviors that may be considered offensive or disrespectful. Consider participating in local cultural events or volunteering with a local organization.

Budget wisely

Ranking on top of the list in my travel tips for young adults is to control your spending. When you are traveling, it is easy to forget what you can afford, as you will run into many nice things and what seem to be necessities. But budgeting wisely is important when you’re traveling, especially if you’re on a limited budget. Create a daily or weekly budget, including accommodation, transportation, food, activities, and emergencies, and stick to it as much as possible. Look for deals and discounts, and consider using a travel rewards credit card to earn points or miles.

Connect with locals

Travel Tips For Young Adults

Connecting with locals is a great way to gain insider knowledge, make new friends, and experience the local culture in a more authentic way. Strike up conversations with locals at cafes, bars, or markets, or consider participating in a homestay or cultural exchange program. Use social media or travel apps to connect with locals before you arrive.

Keep an open mind

Keeping an open mind is crucial to any travel experience, as it allows you to embrace new perspectives and overcome cultural barriers. Be open to different ways of thinking, eating, and living, and avoid judging or stereotyping others. Travel with an open heart and mind, and you may discover a new world of possibilities.

Use public transportation

Public transportation is a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to get around when traveling, especially in urban areas. Use local buses, trains, or subways to explore your destination, and consider purchasing a multi-day pass or city card that offers discounts and perks. Use transportation apps like Citymapper or Moovit to navigate the local transportation system.

If you particularly love travel and plan to stay in the United States, check out this post, I wrote earlier on the 11 Fun vacation spots for Young Adults in the United States .

Stay connected

Staying connected with family and friends is important when you’re traveling, as it can provide emotional support and reassurance. Use messaging apps like WhatsApp or Signal to stay in touch with loved ones, and consider purchasing a local SIM card or a portable Wi-Fi device to stay connected on the go. Use social media or travel apps to share your travel experiences with others.

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial when you’re traveling, as it can help you avoid dehydration, fatigue, and jet lag. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially in hot or dry climates, and avoid drinking tap water in areas with poor water quality. Carry a refillable water bottle or hydration pack to stay hydrated on the go.

Be mindful of your environmental impact

Being mindful of your environmental impact is important when you’re traveling, as it can help preserve your destination’s natural beauty and resources. Avoid using single-use plastics, recycle whenever possible, and use eco-friendly products like biodegradable toiletries or reusable shopping bags. Consider participating in eco-tourism or volunteering with a local environmental organization.

Get off the beaten path

My favorite of the travel tips for young adults is to encourage exploration. Getting off the beaten path is a great way to discover hidden gems and authentic experiences. Explore neighborhoods or towns that are less touristy, and visit local markets, parks, or museums. Consider taking a walking or bike tour to get a local’s perspective on the destination.

Stay active

Staying active is important when you’re traveling, both for your physical and mental health. Go for a run or walk in a local park or along a scenic trail, or take a yoga or fitness class. Consider renting a bike or participating in outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, or kayaking.

Take breaks

Taking breaks is important when you’re traveling, as it allows you to rest, recharge, and reflect on your experiences. Take a day off from sightseeing, spend a few hours reading or relaxing in a park or cafe, or take a short nap during the day. Listen to your body and mind, and take care of yourself.

Keep a travel journal

Keeping a travel journal is a great way to document your travel experiences, reflect on your emotions and thoughts, and create a lasting memory of your trip. Write down your daily activities, take notes on interesting sights or sounds, and include photos or drawings to illustrate your journey. Use a notebook, app, or blog to create your travel journal.

Embrace local cuisine

Embracing local cuisine is one of the most enjoyable aspects of travel, as it allows you to taste and savor your destination’s unique flavors and ingredients. Try local street food, visit local markets or food halls, and take a cooking class or food tour to learn more about the local cuisine. Be adventurous and open-minded, and you may discover a new favorite dish.

Take care of your belongings

Taking care of your belongings is important when you’re traveling, as losing or damaging your valuables can ruin your trip. Keep your valuables in a safe place, like a hotel safe or a locker, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or expensive items. Use luggage locks, anti-theft backpacks, or RFID-blocking wallets to keep your belongings secure.

Staying active is important when you’re traveling, as it can help you stay energized, healthy, and focused. Walk or bike instead of taking a taxi or bus, take a yoga or fitness class, or go for a hike or swim. Use fitness apps or travel guides to find local activities or workouts.

Be prepared for emergencies

Being prepared for emergencies is crucial when you’re traveling. Purchase travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, theft, or trip cancellations, and keep a first-aid kit with essential medications and supplies. Research the location of hospitals or clinics, and carry a list of emergency contacts.

Reflect on your experiences

young adults traveling tips

Reflecting on your experiences is important when you’re traveling. Take time to process your thoughts and feelings, and write down your reflections or lessons learned. Consider volunteering or giving back to the community, or starting a travel blog or vlog to share your experiences with others.

If you choose to travel as part of your career, see this post on 13 Best Traveling Jobs for Young Adults.

Take plenty of photos

Taking plenty of photos is a great way to capture and share your travel memories with others. Use a good quality camera or your smartphone to take photos of the places you visit, the people you meet, and the food you try. Consider creating a travel journal or blog to document your experiences and reflect on your journey.

Having fun is the ultimate goal of any travel experience, as it allows you to create lasting memories and enjoy your trip to the fullest. Don’t take yourself too seriously, be spontaneous, and embrace the unexpected. Try new things, meet new people, and have fun!

A Few Final Words

In conclusion, traveling as a young adult can be a transformative and rewarding experience but it also requires careful planning, preparation, and flexibility. By following these 20 travel tips, you can make the most of your trip, stay safe and healthy, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Happy travels!

Leader talking to two travellers in Egypt

Legendary leaders

The best folks to show you around are the ones who live there. Our local leaders know these destinations like an old friend, so get ready to eat at the best street food joints, get to know the culture in depth and experience things you wouldn’t be able to on your own.

Creating positive change

We're on a mission to create positive change through the joy of travel. That’s why all our trips are carbon offset, and we give back to the communities we visit with the help of The Intrepid Foundation. When you travel with us, you travel with purpose.

Felucca full of travellers

Small groups

With an average group size of 10 people, our groups are big enough to create a good vibe but small enough to blend in with the locals. Whether you’re travelling solo or with mates, you’ll really get to know your group and will never be stuck for someone to grab a drink with.

18 to 35s trip reviews

Is every trip guaranteed to run.

Our trips are guaranteed to depart once they have one fully paid customer, unless the minimum group size listed in the Essential Trip Information and/or Special Conditions state otherwise.

Do you cater for food allergies/dietary requirements?

We’ll try our very hardest to accommodate all dietary requirements, but it can be difficult to guarantee in some out-of-the-way places. We'll let you know if there are places on your itinerary where this is the case. Please let us know your dietary requirements at the time of booking and we’ll pass the information on to your leader.

What’s the standard of accommodation on an 18 to 35s trip?

You’ll be staying in simple, well-located accommodation with shared amenities, though it's common for rooms to be ensuite. Rooming is organised on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports.

If your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. If you'd like your own space, most of our trips also have the option to pay a fee for an individual room.

Will the accommodation have Wi-Fi?

Most hotels, cafes and bars have Wi-Fi, especially in big cities and towns. In remote places (like the Sahara and the Amazon Rainforest) or on treks or homestays, you won’t be able to access Wi-Fi or mobile data as easily. Your leader will give you a heads-up beforehand so you can call home or send a quick WhatsApp.

Your leader can also help you buy a local SIM card if you'd like to stay connected.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

You sure do. Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Your leader will take down your insurance details on the first day in case they are needed during the trip, so make sure to bring your policy documents.

Learn more about travel insurance .

Do I need any travel vaccinations?

Vaccination requirements differ depending on the destination, and as we’re not medical practitioners, unfortunately we can't advise on this issue. Please see your local GP or travel doctor for details and advice about current vaccination requirements.

Learn more about entry and health requirements for the destination(s) you’ll be visiting .

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join an 18 to 35s trip?

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Meet our local leaders

Intrepid leader, Nhi Pham

"When you travel with me we'll be hanging out with the locals, tucking into the best street food and trying to master Vietnamese pronunciation (FYI, it's hard!). Whatever we do, we'll laugh a lot and make amazing memories together. Pack your best smile and count on me for the rest – I'll be your local buddy."

- Nhi Pham, Vietnam

Intrepid leader, Paul Garrido

“It will be a pleasure to share our traditions and beliefs, take you to the most amazing sites and, most importantly, interact with the locals! Get ready for a behind-the-scenes tour where we’ll visit hole-in-the-wall restaurants and find the best picarones (Andean doughnuts) *chef’s kiss. I’ll be waiting for you here, in my beloved Peru.

- Paul Garrido, Peru

Intrepid leader, Huyen Nguyen

"You might come to Vietnam for the beautiful scenery, but you'll stay for the friendly people! I love introducing travellers to locals and having a chit-chat, going on spontaneous walks to explore the hidden spots and sharing stories to keep our beautiful culture alive."

- Huyen Nguyen, Vietnam

Travel for good

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That's why every Intrepid trip is aligned with a relevant partner through The Intrepid Foundation and a donation is given for every trip booked. You can see which partner is aligned with a trip in the Essential Trip Information under ‘The Intrepid Foundation’.

Learn more about The Intrepid Foundation

We've got trips to suit every adventurer – no matter your budget, interests or travel style. If you can't travel on an 18 to 35s trip, you can always book a seat on one of our other trips, which are open to all ages!

Why You Should Travel While You're Young

by Elizabeth Gorga April 12, 2023

facebook icon

When it comes to traveling the world, it’s easy to tell yourself you’ll have time to do it…later. And yes, waiting until you’re older to travel can mean you have time to save money for broader experiences, but it also means finding time amongst more responsibility, making it more difficult to get away and explore the world on your own terms.

person sitting on bridge looking at water surrounded by buildings

Why wait to see the world when you can start traveling today?

There are plenty of reasons why you should travel while you’re young instead of waiting for the “perfect” time. The reality is there will always be an excuse not to travel. When you travel while you’re young, you can throw yourself in head first and learn more about yourself and what you want out of life—while you still have your whole life ahead of you.

Plus, life is short and unpredictable, and sometimes you really do just have to say “YOLO” and go for it.

Why you should travel while you’re young

Travel is truly one of the best ways to learn about yourself and the world. No matter how old you are and what parts of the world you decide to explore, there are always lessons to be learned and opportunities to shift your perspective and grow more deeply into who you are. Why not travel young and get a head start?

Traveling is life-changing at any age, but when young people travel, they discover more about who they want to be and how they want to show up in the world. What could be better than that? Here are the top reasons why traveling is important for youth.

1. You’ll be fearless.

While it can be intimidating to travel while you’re young, especially if you’ve never been overseas before , you’ll be much more fearless once you get over the initial overwhelming feeling of planning your first trip.

Age comes with inevitable aches, pains, and responsibilities, which means you won’t be as likely to climb the tallest mountains, say “yes” to every adrenaline-pumping adventure thrown your way, or push yourself out of the comfort zone you’ve been settled into for so long. Travel experiences for young adults are often filled with more adventure and youth brings the fearlessness to say “yes” to it all.

2. You’ll make lifelong friends you can keep for longer.

The truth is, when you travel young, you’ll find many other travelers are young, too. While you can still make friends as an older traveler, it’s easier to bond with people your own age.

three smiling people arm in arm

The friends you make while traveling are friends you’ll keep for life.

Youth travel programs mean you’ll get to explore the world with other teenagers or young adult travelers. You’ll bond over shared once-in-a-lifetime experiences—whether that’s with other travelers, trip leaders, or even locals—and leave with friends you’ll have for life .

3. You can expand your language repertoire.

Imagine how amazing it would feel to have a new language slip easily and effortlessly off your tongue, to be able to read road signs, order off of a foreign menu, or have a casual conversation with someone who lives on the other side of the world. Learning a new language is always easier when you’re young.

Not only does it make you look cool and exotic to your friends back home, but it also opens up endless opportunities for later in life, whether you want to study abroad , work in an international company , or travel more extensively. You may even decide to explore youth travel groups that guide you around the world while teaching you the local languages at the same time.

4. Your resume will shine.

One of the most practical reasons why you should travel young is to add a unique experience to your resume . Whether you return home to apply for college or to land your first job, showing that you were able to travel young can enhance your college and job applications so you stand out from the crowd.

You’ll be able to demonstrate that you’re willing to push yourself out of your comfort zone, be adaptable, and have an awareness of other cultures. It makes you well-rounded, which is so important anywhere you go in the professional world.

5. You’ll gain real-world experience.

There’s only so much you can learn from a textbook. Instead of sitting in a classroom or behind a desk reading about different places and cultures, travel experiences for young adults allow you to physically explore a new place, to see its beauty with your own eyes, to soak in the history in a way that allows you to feel it in your bones, and to feel like you’re part of the culture.

Sure, you can do that when you’re older, but there’s something magical about going through life knowing that feeling of immersing yourself in a foreign land .

6. You’ll learn independence.

person sitting on picnic blanket overlooking mountains

When you learn to rely on yourself, you can take on anything that comes your way.

Traveling is fun, but it can also be challenging . Travel for young people is an opportunity to learn the skill of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and rising to any challenge you’re faced with later in life. It means getting lost, experiencing culture shock , or mixing up the words “embarrassed” and “pregnant” while practicing Spanish.

Each experience you have will challenge you while teaching you how to grow and how to become more independent. You’ll come to understand how to stand on your own two feet, and that’s always best learned when you’re young.

7. You’ll discover hidden passions.

One of the biggest reasons why you should travel young instead of waiting until you’re older is because it’s the perfect opportunity to learn about yourself. There are many people who go through life never knowing who they are or what they truly want to experience in life, but travel teaches you.

It gives you the chance to discover new skills you wouldn’t acquire at home, to gain real-life experience that opens your mind, and to uncover passions that you may not have ever discovered otherwise. Why wait until you’re older for that?

8. You’ll build your confidence.

Building confidence when you’re young will take you anywhere you want to go in life. Travel experiences for young adults are the best confidence boosters. As you learn how to be independent, navigate a new country, and communicate across cultures, your confidence will grow.

You’ll discover how to think on your feet, budget, and stay organized. Going home to a place you know well where you speak the language and things feel easier will make you feel like you can do anything!

9. You’ll become more culturally sensitive.

In a world that is expanding and constantly breaking down borders, it’s important to understand cultures that are different from your own. When young people travel, they learn what other cultures find normal and what they value, and they gain the ability to open their minds to new ways of living.

It’s a lot easier to do this when you’re young, and it gives you skills you can carry with you everywhere. You’ll be able to relate to people more easily and understand international conflicts and issues. It will help you to be a better communicator—whether you choose to use that in your personal life or in your studies and career.

10. You’ll get closer to your purpose.

person lying on sofa with book covering face

Can’t quite figure out your purpose? Traveling can give you insight you can’t get from books or classrooms.

What is your purpose? It’s the question each person asks themselves as they venture through this weird and wonderful life. The more you allow yourself to experience at a young age, the clearer your vision for life becomes.

You’ll come to understand more clearly what you like, what you don’t like, what you want more of and less of out of life. As you discover more of the world, your travel experiences will give you insight into your true values and desires, each experience getting you close to your purpose in the world.

11. You’ll have the most freedom.

The older you get, the more responsibility you’ll have. It can be tempting to tell yourself to wait to travel so you can save more money , but ultimately, waiting until you’re older means less freedom.

One of the biggest reasons why traveling is important for youth is because your youth is the easiest time to travel—before you have student debt, serious relationships, children, a car, or a mortgage to pay off. It means you can travel more often and for longer periods of time. It means you will have no limits.

12. No regrets!

Don’t fall into the trap of waiting and waiting, and then realizing it’s too late. You will never regret traveling—now or later in life.

So why wait? You never know how life will shift around you, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Travel young and you won’t have regrets when you’re older.

3 fun youth travel programs

Traveling while you’re young might be out of your comfort zone, especially if you’ve never traveled abroad. One of the best parts about traveling while you’re young is that there are endless youth travel programs out there so you don’t have to deal with the nitty gritty of travel on your own .

Youth travel groups give you structure, support, immediate friends, and guidance every step away. And while it’s possible to find group travel programs for adults, there are a lot more limitations…and many of the most epic youth travel programs are only available to you while you’re young. Here are GoAbroad’s top picks for youth travel programs.

Out of Your Comfort Zone

The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, 5 best group tour companies for young solo single travelers.

Last Updated on February 19, 2024 by Talita

Traveling alone is wonderful, but it can also be intimidating. Especially if your destination has a language or a culture completely different from your own.

And sometimes, making friends while traveling can be difficult and many worry about getting lonely. So, a good option for anyone who wants to begin adventuring around the world on their own is to use a tour excursion company that specializes in trips for young adults.

Of course, traveling is always about visiting a place and seeing new things, but one of the highlights is often meeting new people along the way. This is what is called social traveling .

Is it worth going on a group tour as a young solo/single traveler?

As with all types of travel, there are pros and cons to going with a tour company, especially with companies specialized in tours for young travelers since many include lots of partying and going out and daily bonding with the same group. So, it’s possible that this isn’t the right choice for you.

(PS: still a young adult traveler who is interested in group tours but not the party aspect of them? See tour companies # 3 & #4 below or see my article with the 5 Best Small Group Tour Companies for International Travel  for  some more options)

So it’s important to know some things beforehand about this type of trip so you can decide for yourself if it’s your style or not.

To help you choose an excursion that works for you and fits your travel type, we’ll separate out the companies that specialize in guided trips for young single/solo travelers with the best reputations (and prices) on the market here, including a comparison table.

It’s also worth remembering that some of these companies offer guided tours beyond those just for young adults. So no matter what, you should be able to find one a tour that works best with your personality, your wallet, and your patience.

Note: And if you are a woman and want to take a solo female small group tour, take a look at our bonus option after the comparison table: Solo Female Travelers Tours

5 Best Tour Companies for Young Solo/Single Travelers

Sextiki

Contiki is the most well-known tour company for young travelers worldwide. It’s been around since 1962, so its name carries quite a lot of weight.

But don’t worry if this sounds a bit intense for you…the options below are a bit more “calm.”

So, as you can imagine,  most of Contiki’s excursions involve lots of partying and going out with “pub crawl” kind of nights. And since there’s plenty of cool stories online of young travelers who traveled and would travel again with Contiki, it must be one of the best companies available if this is the type of travel you’re looking for.

Contiki has more than 328 distinct tours for many destinations across the 6 continents. According to their website, 55% of travelers who chose Contiki are single and are traveling alone, but the trips can also accommodate groups of friends and couples.

Group tour for solo young travelers

One thing to keep in mind is that the groups are usually quite big, around 30 people, and the main form of travel is the company’s coach bus.

Finally, their tours have a bit of everything: physical activities , exploration of local culture and food, and visits to ethical and sustainable organizations and projects in your destination. In other words, you are capable of a journey full of different attractions, sounds, and experiences!

Topdeck is a company that offers“epic trips and tours for young adventurers aged 18-39.”With 40 years of experience, alongside Contiki, Topdeck is one of the most well-known companies in terms of group travel for young solo/single travelers.

Their trips are divided into several categories:

  • Hotel tours: designed for couples or singles who want to travel a bit more comfortably through Europe, the U.S., Canada, or Asia. All hotels have, at least, 3 stars and the excursions give you a lot of free time to relax or explore on your own.
  • Explorer trips: these are shorter trips, between 6 days and 3 weeks, with just one country for those who want to explore local culture more deeply. The groups are small and accommodation is in shared or private hotel rooms.
  • Hostel plus trip:  low-cost tours with accommodation in hostels , cabins, or vans and with itineraries with multiple destinations/countries.
  • Camping trips: these trips are the cheapest way to travel through Europe with Topdeck. The accommodation is camping with private chefs cooking meals daily. The bunks are for two people and include mattresses.
  • Sailing trips: these trips are an awesome option for anyone who dreams of sailing the world but doesn’t have an idea of where to start. Accommodation is within a sailboat in double, triple, or quadruple rooms with meals included.
  • Festivals and events: these tours are specifically for events like Oktoberfest or the Sziget festival (in Hungary) and other festivals in the United States, Canada, and Europe .
  • Ski trips: these trips are perfect for anyone who loves snow and skiing . With destinations in Canada, New Zealand, Bulgaria, and Japan . Accommodation is in private or shared hotel rooms.
  • Gap year: this trip is made for young travelers 17-18 who want to travel in Europe after graduating high school. It’s a great idea for anyone who wants to travel on their own without freaking their parents out. Accommodation is in hostels and the destinations usually include 8-10 countries.

Created in 1990, G Adventures was born with the idea of offering authentic adventures responsibly and sustainably. Their excursions have reasonable prices and cover all the continents, including Antarctica!

The groups are small and the itineraries are designed so you have time to explore on your own. The trips are themed and have different options for all ages, including a category for young travelers aged 18-39.

The trips in this category are faster-paced and designed for young travelers. In other words, you explore during the day and stay up at night. Their motto for these excursions is “live fast now.” So, their trips are usually longer than the others and offer more activities.

Plus, this category of travel groups is a bit more affordable with accommodation in hostels and a few meals included to guarantee a cheaper price. You can read more about these trips here .

Or, just click in the link above, go to G Adventures main page, click “Travel Styles” and select “18-to-Thirtysomethings!”

It’s worth remembering that these trips follow the basic principles of G Adventures: small groups and free time. Plus, the trips are done in a responsible and sustainable way, prioritizing small businesses and the welfare of animals, children, and indigenous communities.

And finally, like Intrepid, G Adventures is a partner of Planeterra, an NGO dedicated to ensuring that communities touched by tourism benefit from it, rather than be exploited by it. The organization helps to empower local populations, preserve their cultures, and create support systems by managing 50 organizations across the 7 continents with the aim of benefiting women, at-risk youth, and indigenous and rural communities. You can read more about Planeterra here .

Best tour groups

Intrepid is considered by many to be one of the best options for those who want to travel as part of an excursion with small, adventure-focused groups .

All trips offered by Intrepid are sustainable, and because of this Intrepid is known and respected as the global leader in sustainable travel.

The company has zeroed its carbon footprint and supports the Intrepid Foundation, a foundation that finances the planting of trees worldwide creates jobs and local education, and helps the world achieve 8 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. You can read more about the foundation at https://www.theintrepidfoundation.org/.

Intrepid has many types of trips for all budgets and personalities. That said, the company prides itself in organizing small groups of up to 10 people. This is because Intrepid believes that this is the maximum number of people that still allows a true connection with locals without you simply feeling like just a face in the group. The trips are also always designed to give you some time to explore on your own.

Group tour for solo young travelers singles

The trips made for young travelers aged 18-29 (called their “18 to 29s” trips) are designed specifically for the new generation of socially-conscious explorers. In other words, they were created for travelers who want to discover new places and cultures, make new friends , and also make a difference in the world.

There are many destinations and the cost of the trips are relatively low given that they are designed for young travelers. You can see all of Intrepid’s tour options here .

Unlike the other companies mentioned above, Trek American only offers excursions for North and Central America. And in general their tours are quite small, just 13 people, with the exception of their “plus” tours of up to 30 people.

Trek America is also quite well-known and has been running since 1972. Like Contiki, the tours are exclusively for young travelers aged 18-38 and include itineraries of 3 days to 3 months.

The reputation of Trek America is that they offer experiences which change your life with a balance between visiting big cities, national parks, and other activities that explore the most incredible places in North and Central America.

And, unlike Contiki, Trek America trips don’t include the “pub crawl” culture. So if you are a young traveler who is more interested in exploring and making new experiences instead of partying, Trek America might be good for you.

tour groups singles young solo

They have 3 types of tours:

  • Original tours: small group tours with the aim of having an authentic “ road trip ,” with cheap accommodation that includes hostels, camping, and budget hotels. The groups have 10-13 people, which gives you a bit more flexibility in the itinerary.
  • Plus tours: offered just to explore North America, these tours offer more comfort, primarily when it comes to accommodation, and you’ll stay in hotels, eco resorts, and apartments. Plus, breakfast is included as is more activities than the original tours. The only “con” is that the groups are usually bigger (up to 30 people).
  • BOLT tours: offered exclusively for Central America with a combination of private transportation and local transportation. The groups are 12-18 people with accommodation in hotels and with a bit more flexibility, meaning the most famous tourist spots will be included, but you’ll still have lots of free time to explore on your own.

Days 1-3: Tokyo

Starting your 14 days in Japan itinerary in Tokyo is like stepping into a world where the future meets the past. Tokyo, the electrifying capital of Japan , is a city where you can witness the harmonious blend of cutting-edge modernity and revered traditions. The city’s skyline, dotted with neon-lit skyscrapers like those in Shibuya and Shinjuku, creates an almost surreal backdrop for your adventures. These bustling districts are not just about their towering buildings; they’re cultural hubs where fashion, technology, and entertainment come alive.

As you delve into Tokyo’s myriad offerings, the historic Asakusa district provides a stark contrast to the modern areas. Here, the ancient Sensō-ji Temple offers a tranquil retreat, allowing you to experience the spiritual side of Japan. It’s a place where you can get lost in time, surrounded by the incense-filled air and the sounds of traditional prayers.

No visit to Tokyo is complete without exploring the vibrant and quirky Harajuku, the epicenter of Japan’s unique youth culture and fashion. This area is a kaleidoscope of color and creativity, where you can find everything from the latest trends to vintage gems. Just a stone’s throw away is the serene Meiji Shrine, a verdant oasis offering peace and tranquility amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. This juxtaposition of the trendy and the timeless is what makes Tokyo so captivating.

As the sun sets, Tokyo transforms into a gastronomic paradise. The city’s izakayas (Japanese pubs) and sushi bars present an array of local flavors that are both exquisite and adventurous. From high-end Michelin-starred restaurants to cozy street food stalls, Tokyo’s culinary scene is a delight for the senses. Whether you’re sipping sake under the neon lights or enjoying a sushi breakfast at the famous Tsukiji Market, the food experiences in Tokyo are unparalleled.

The energy, diversity, and sheer scale of Tokyo make it a must-visit on your Japan itinerary 14 days . It’s a city that never fails to amaze, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. From the moment you arrive, Tokyo sets the tone for an exciting and unforgettable 2 weeks in Japan, laying the groundwork for an adventure filled with contrasting experiences and rich cultural encounters.

Day 4: Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji, standing majestically as Japan’s highest peak, is an unmissable destination on your 14-day Japan itinerary. This iconic volcano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is not just a stunning natural landmark but also a symbol of Japan’s cultural and spiritual heritage. The journey from Tokyo to Mount Fuji is a delightful adventure in itself, offering scenic vistas that promise to captivate you. Whether you opt for a relaxing bus ride or a swift train journey, getting there is straightforward and part of the experience.

As you approach Mount Fuji, the surrounding area, particularly the Five Lakes region, unfolds in a tapestry of natural beauty. The lakes, formed by previous eruptions, provide unparalleled views of the mountain, creating a perfect backdrop for photographers and nature lovers alike. Each lake offers its unique charm; for instance, Lake Kawaguchiko, the most accessible of the five, is a hub for activities and has numerous hot spring resorts. The region is not just a summer destination; in winter, it transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering breathtaking views against the crisp, clear skies.

For the adventurous souls, hiking Mount Fuji is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The climbing season, typically from early July to mid-September, sees the mountain trails come alive with hikers from around the world. There are routes for every level, but remember, it’s not just about reaching the summit; the journey itself is filled with awe-inspiring views and a sense of camaraderie among fellow trekkers. Even if climbing isn’t on your agenda, the area around Mount Fuji offers plenty of activities – from leisurely boat rides on the lakes to exploring the culturally rich Fujinomiya trail, known for its historical and spiritual sites.

A visit to Mount Fuji is more than just a tick on your travel list; it’s an encounter with Japan’s soul. Standing amidst its grandeur, you’ll understand why this mountain is a revered and beloved symbol of Japan. Its inclusion in your 2-weeks in Japan is not just about capturing its beauty but also about immersing yourself in an experience that embodies the essence of Japanese nature and spirituality. Whether you’re gazing at its snow-capped peak, wandering around the tranquil lakes, or ascending its slopes, Mount Fuji promises to be a highlight of your Japan tour.

Days 5-6: Kyoto

Kyoto, often referred to as the cultural heart of Japan , is an unmissable stop on your 14-day Japan itinerary. As you step off the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo, you’re transported into a world where ancient traditions and serene beauty blend seamlessly with the modern rhythm of life. Kyoto is a city where every street, temple, and garden tells the story of Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

In this city, history is alive and palpable. Wander through the enchanting streets of Gion, Kyoto’s most famous geisha district. Here, wooden machiya houses line the streets, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a geisha in her exquisite kimono. As you explore, the atmosphere of ancient Japan envelops you, making it a highlight in the best 2-week Japan itinerary.

The temples and shrines of Kyoto are nothing short of breathtaking. Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion , glimmers in the sunlight, its reflection shimmering in the surrounding pond – a sight that’s both stunning and deeply calming. Equally mesmerising is Fushimi Inari-taisha, famed for its seemingly endless path of vibrant red torii gates winding through the forest. These iconic sights aren’t just beautiful; they’re emblematic of Japan’s spiritual and artistic prowess, making them some of the best things to see in Japan.

But Kyoto isn’t just about its historical and visual splendor. The city is also the birthplace of kaiseki, Japan’s haute cuisine. This culinary art form, focusing on seasonal ingredients and exquisite presentation, offers a dining experience that engages all senses. Partaking in a traditional tea ceremony is another cultural experience that shouldn’t be missed. The meticulous preparation and serene setting provide a deeper understanding of Japanese customs and aesthetics.

In essence, Kyoto encapsulates the essence of traditional Japan, making it an essential part of any Japan trip itinerary 14 days. It’s a city where the ancient and the modern coexist harmoniously, offering a rich, multi-layered experience to every traveller. Whether you’re seeking spiritual solace in its temples, a walk through its historical narratives, or a taste of its culinary excellence, Kyoto promises to be a memorable and enriching stop on your Japan tour.

Days 7-8: Nara

Nara, a jewel in Japan’s cultural crown, is more than just a city; it’s a gateway to Japan’s ancient heart. Just a short train ride from Kyoto, Nara is a city where history breathes in every corner, making it an unmissable stop in your 14 days in Japan itinerary. The city, once the capital of Japan, holds treasures that offer a glimpse into the country’s rich historical past.

The star attraction of Nara is undoubtedly Nara Park , home to hundreds of free-roaming deer, considered messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion. These friendly creatures have become a symbol of the city and interacting with them is a delight. You can feed them with special crackers sold around the park, but be prepared for their enthusiastic attention!

A short walk from the deer park brings you to the awe-inspiring Todai-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple houses a colossal bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana, known in Japan as Daibutsu. Standing at over 15 meters tall, this statue is a breathtaking sight and represents a significant achievement in Japanese art and architecture. The temple complex itself, set against the backdrop of lush green hills, offers a serene and majestic environment that invites quiet reflection and admiration.

But Nara isn’t just about grand temples and deer. Take a stroll through the Isuien Garden, a beautifully landscaped garden that epitomises the Japanese art of garden design. With its carefully manicured plants, serene ponds, and the backdrop of the Wakakusa Hill, this garden is a haven of tranquility and beauty.

Nara also hosts several traditional festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Nara Tokae, a spectacular lantern festival in August, and the Omizutori in March, a Buddhist water-drawing festival with a history spanning over 1,000 years.

Incorporating Nara into your Japan tou r is not just about adding another destination to your journey; it’s about experiencing the soul of traditional Japan. Its rich tapestry of cultural landmarks, combined with its unique, natural charm, makes Nara an essential and unforgettable part of any Japan itinerary 14 days. Whether you’re feeding the deer, marveling at the giant Buddha, or soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of its gardens, Nara promises experiences that stay with you long after your visit.

Days 9-10: Osaka

Osaka, a lively jewel in the heart of Japan, is a must-visit on your 14-day Japan itinerary. Known as the nation’s kitchen, this city is a paradise for food lovers and a hub of endless entertainment and cultural experiences. A short train ride from Nara will bring you into the bustling heart of Osaka , where the city’s vibrant energy is palpable in every street and alleyway.

The culinary scene in Osaka is second to none, and Dotonbori is the epicentre of this gastronomic wonderland. Here, neon lights illuminate a plethora of street food stalls and restaurants where you can indulge in Osaka’s famous Takoyaki (octopus balls) and Okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) – a true taste of the local flavors. For a more in-depth culinary experience, visit Kuromon Ichiba Market, often referred to as ‘Osaka’s Kitchen’, where fresh seafood, local produce, and street snacks abound.

But Osaka isn’t just about food. The city is steeped in history, and Osaka Castle stands as a testament to its rich past. This iconic landmark, surrounded by moats and parkland, offers not just a history lesson but also panoramic views of the city from its observatory. For a dose of modernity, head to the Umeda Sky Building, where the Floating Garden Observatory presents a stunning 360-degree view of the cityscape.

As night falls, Osaka’s streets come alive with a different kind of energy. The city’s nightlife is vibrant and diverse, from the lively bars in the Amerikamura district to the stylish clubs in Namba. The friendly locals add to the city’s charm, making visitors feel right at home. The combination of its dynamic food scene, historical significance, and lively urban culture makes Osaka an exhilarating and indispensable stop in your Japan trip itinerary 14 days. It’s a city that captures the essence of modern Japan while still holding onto its historical roots, offering an experience that is as enriching as it is exciting.

Days 11-12: Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

Visiting Hiroshima and Miyajima Island is an integral part of your 14-day Japan itinerary, offering a blend of historical significance and breathtaking natural beauty. Hiroshima, a city that has risen phoenix-like from the ashes of its past, presents a poignant yet inspiring chapter in your Japanese journey. The city is easily accessible via a bullet train from Osaka, providing a comfortable and swift journey.

In Hiroshima, the Peace Memorial Park and Museum stand as powerful symbols of peace and resilience. Walking through this area, you’re not just learning about the past; you’re witnessing the city’s commitment to peace and understanding. The Atomic Bomb Dome, preserved in its post-bombing state, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit. It’s a solemn reminder of the tragedies of war but also a beacon of hope and peace. The Children’s Peace Monument and the various memorials within the park contribute to a reflective experience, making Hiroshima a city that stays with you long after you leave.

Just a short ferry ride from Hiroshima lies the enchanting Miyajima Island, known for the iconic Itsukushima Shrine with its famous floating torii gate. This gate, seemingly floating on water at high tide, offers one of the most picturesque scenes in Japan. Miyajima is more than just its torii gate; the island is a serene escape with lush forests and gentle deer roaming freely. Take the time to explore the island’s hiking trails, leading you to stunning viewpoints and the impressive Daisho-in Temple. The island’s quaint streets are lined with shops and cafes, perfect for enjoying local delicacies like Momiji Manju (maple leaf-shaped cakes).

The contrast between Hiroshima’s historical depth and Miyajima’s natural beauty exemplifies the diverse experiences Japan offers. The visit here adds a layer of historical depth and natural tranquility to your 2 weeks in Japan. These destinations are not just stops on a tour; they’re profound experiences that offer insights into Japan’s past and present, its resilience, and its unparalleled natural beauty, making them essential to your Japan trip itinerary 14 days.

Days 13-14: Hokkaido

The final chapter of your best 2-week Japan itinerary unfolds in the majestic Hokkaido , Japan’s second-largest island, renowned for its striking natural beauty. This part of your journey requires an internal flight from Hiroshima, but the transition is well worth it as you’re transported to a land that feels almost like a different country within Japan. Hokkaido, with its untamed wilderness, offers a stark contrast to Japan’s more urban destinations, making it an essential inclusion in your Japan trip itinerary 14 days.

In the summer months, Hokkaido transforms into a verdant paradise, with landscapes ranging from rolling hills to flower-laden fields. Places like Furano become a kaleidoscope of colours with their famous lavender fields, creating picturesque scenes straight out of a postcard. Summer also brings milder temperatures, perfect for exploring the island’s numerous national parks, where you can hike through lush forests and relax in natural hot springs. This vibrant season in Hokkaido adds a refreshing touch to your 14 days in Japan itinerary.

As winter descends, Hokkaido becomes a snowy haven, attracting skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts from around the globe. Niseko, renowned for its powder snow, offers some of the best winter sports experiences in Asia. The island’s winter highlight, however, is the Sapporo Snow Festival, where you can witness incredible ice sculptures and enjoy a lively atmosphere filled with food, music, and local culture. This winter wonderland experience is a must-see for anyone on a Japan tour during the colder months.

Besides its natural allure, Hokkaido is also celebrated for its culinary scene. The capital city, Sapporo, is a gastronomic delight, especially known for its fresh seafood and dairy products. Don’t miss the chance to try the famous Sapporo ramen, characterised by its rich and flavourful broth. And, of course, a visit to the Sapporo Brewery is a must for beer enthusiasts, where you can learn about the brewing process and sample some of the freshest beer you’ll ever taste.

Budgeting for a 14 day trip to Japan

When planning a 14-day trip to Japan, understanding the costs involved is crucial for a stress-free experience. Japan, known for its remarkable blend of ancient culture and cutting-edge modernity, can indeed be an expensive destination, particularly in major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto. Accommodation often constitutes a significant portion of travel expenses, with prices varying widely depending on the type and location of lodging. So, how much should you budget for your Japan itinerary 14 days cost?

For 2 weeks in Japan, a reasonable budget could range from £2,500 to £3,500, depending on your travel style. This estimate includes accommodation, food, local transportation, and entry fees to various attractions. However, 14 days travelling in Japan cost can fluctuate based on your choices – dining at upscale restaurants, opting for faster bullet trains, or indulging in unique experiences can add to your budget.

Given the costs, you might wonder, Is 14 days enough to see Japan? While it’s challenging to explore the entire country in two weeks, a well-planned itinerary can certainly cover many of Japan’s highlights, offering a fulfilling experience. To manage expenses effectively, consider how much money you should have for 2 weeks in Japan and plan accordingly. Budgeting for Japan requires balancing between must-see attractions and everyday expenses.

Group tours can be a cost-effective alternative. Opting for an organised group tour, especially for young adults, can significantly reduce costs. Such tours often include accommodation, some meals, and transportation at a more affordable rate compared to solo travel. On TourRadar, a popular platform for finding and booking group tours, there’s a diverse range of Japan tour packages to choose from . Among these, you’ll find 21 different options that range between 10 to 14 days in duration. For young adult travellers, the majority of group tours in Japan tend to be 10 days or less. These tours are compact, fast-paced, and cover many of the major highlights in a relatively short time. They are perfect for those who have limited time but still want a taste of Japan’s rich culture, bustling cities, and scenic landscapes. These 10-day itineraries are ideal for getting a snapshot of Japan, offering a mix of traditional and modern experiences.

However, if you’re yearning for a more in-depth exploration of Japan, a 14 days in Japan itinerary is undoubtedly the better choice. A 14-day tour not only includes the major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka but also offers opportunities to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations. You’ll have more time to soak in the natural beauty of rural Japan, experience local life, and engage in unique cultural activities that might not fit into a shorter itinerary.

Choosing a 14-day tour also means you can spend more time at each location, getting to know the local food, traditions, and people, which is often the essence of a truly memorable travel experience. It’s an ideal way to ensure you don’t just see Japan, but you experience it fully. So, for those who can spare the extra days, the 14-day Japan itinerary promises a more comprehensive and fulfilling journey through this fascinating country.

The Great South American Journey: Quito to Rio Adventure

This is the best G adventures tour I have done in terms of itinerary and people I was traveling with. I had a fantastic time with a great group of people. The only feedback I will give G is I feel the CEO guides are pressured to get 9s or 10s in their reviews and hence transmit that to us which made me not leave a review on the G website as I felt I could not be completely honest without harming the tour guides' rating. This culture should change if you want constructive feedback. I loved all 4 of my CEOs on my tour but 2 of them were outstanding (10/10s) and I felt as a result of above, I could not give them the credit they were due without causing harm to the other 2 who were also good but more 7/10s.

I am always blown away by the care we receive from the local guides. I did the Quarry Trail option and would HIGHLY reccomend this option over the traditional Inca trail. Lima to Buenos Aires: Deserts & Dancing Tour

Lima to Buenos Aires: Deserts & Dancing

A really good mix of hiking, culture, and exploration. I really enjoyed this tour, as it covers so many places that aren't otherwise accessible on your own. Arguable, Inca Trail was the highlight, but there was so much more. Ballesta Islands, Lake Titicaca, the Yungas Road in Bolivia, steak in Salta, etc etc. I enjoyed Bolivia much more than I expected (the museums in Potosi were world class). You have free time to explore the big cities such as La Paz on your own if you choose. Only downside were some inflexibility in restaurant choice. Overall a good trip I'll remember for a long time.

Europe is an ideal destination for young adults seeking adventure and cultural immersion. With so many countries and cities to choose from, there’s always somewhere new to discover and experience.

Importance of traveling for young adults

For many young adults, traveling is a crucial rite of passage and a chance to explore new cultures, meet new people, and learn about themselves. It’s an opportunity to leave their comfort zones and experience the world beyond their backyards. Here are some reasons why traveling is important for young adults.

Firstly, traveling enhances personal growth and development. It provides a chance to see things from a different perspective and learn about new cultures, languages, foods, customs, and ways of life.

Exposure to diverse backgrounds can broaden one’s worldview by challenging preconceived notions and stereotypes. Secondly, traveling can improve social skills by providing opportunities for young adults to meet people worldwide.

Whether it’s fellow travelers or locals in the destinations they visit, interacting with new people not only helps individuals develop communication skills but also increases empathy towards others. Traveling can improve mental health by escaping daily stressors like work or school.

As individuals explore new cities or landscapes they may have never seen before; it opens up doors for adventure while reducing stress levels that come with daily routine activities. From seeing breathtaking views in Santorini or swimming in crystal clear waters in Turkey, every travel destination offers something unique to uplift one’s mood.

Traveling offers many benefits for young adults beyond just seeing new places or taking pictures for social media posts. It’s an opportunity for personal growth through exposure to different cultures while improving social skills by meeting diverse groups of people from around the globe leading to improved mental well-being that every individual deserves.

Factors to consider when choosing destinations (budget, interests, safety, etc.)

When it comes to planning a trip to Europe , there are several factors that young adults should consider before choosing a destination. Budget, interests, and safety are key factors that can make or break your experience abroad.

Budget is one of the most important considerations when planning a European trip. Young adults on a tight budget may want to consider more affordable destinations like Budapest or Ljubljana.

These cities offer plenty of attractions and activities at a fraction of the cost of some popular tourist destinations like Paris or London. When budgeting for your trip, consider the cost of transportation, accommodations, food and drink, and any sightseeing activities you plan.

Another important factor to consider is your interests. Are you interested in art and history?

Then Florence or Rome might be ideal destinations for you. If you’re into nightlife and partying, Amsterdam or Berlin could be more your style.

And if outdoor adventure is what you’re after, consider visiting places like Santorini or Stockholm , where there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring. Safety should always be a top priority when traveling abroad.

While most European countries are considered safe for tourists, it’s still important to research beforehand. Make sure you know which areas are safe to visit at night and how to stay safe while using public transportation.

It’s always wise to keep an eye on your belongings while out in public areas, as pickpocketing can, unfortunately, be common in certain cities. Considering these key factors when choosing a destination for your European adventure as a young adult can help ensure you have an unforgettable experience abroad without breaking the bank or compromising safety!

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

In addition to its many historic sites, Tallinn offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures, such as exploring Laheema National Park or visiting one of its many beaches on hot summer days. Overall, if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination that combines rich history with modern amenities – look no further than Tallinn!

Travel Tips for Young Adults

Transportation options (budget airlines, trains, buses, etc.).

There are many transportation options when traveling around Europe as a young adult. Depending on your budget and travel preferences, you might want to consider taking advantage of the following affordable means of transportation:

Firstly, budget airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet are excellent options for those who want to fly between European countries quickly and cheaply. With fares starting at just a few euros one way, it takes time to beat these airlines’ value.

However, it’s important to remember that budget airlines often charge extra baggage and seat selection fees. Additionally, be prepared for long lines at the airport and strict baggage weight restrictions.

Secondly, trains are another popular option among young travelers. The Eurail Pass is a great way to see multiple countries on one trip while enjoying an extensive European rail network.

With various types of passes available, from 3 days up to 3 months, you can customize your itinerary according to your needs. Moreover, train travel provides scenic views and is often more comfortable than flying.

Taking buses is another budget-friendly option when traveling around Europe as a young adult. Companies like Flixbus offer routes throughout many countries with prices starting at just a couple of euros per journey.

While buses may take longer than planes or trains, they can be more flexible with their schedules and sometimes have more direct routes between cities. No matter which mode of transportation you choose when exploring Europe as a young adult traveler, plenty of affordable options will help stretch your budget further without compromising on the quality of your travels!

Accommodation options (hostels, Airbnb, budget hotels, etc.)

Accommodation is one of the most significant expenses on any trip, and for young adults traveling on a budget, finding affordable accommodation options is crucial. Luckily, Europe offers various accommodation options suitable for all budgets and preferences. Here are some popular choices:

Hostels:  Hostels are an excellent option for young travelers who want to save money while meeting other travelers. Most hostels offer shared dorm rooms with bunk beds or private rooms with shared bathrooms.

Some hostels also have communal spaces such as kitchens and lounges where travelers can socialize and cook meals. Hostel prices vary depending on the location, but they’re generally more affordable than hotels.

Airbnb:  Airbnb is a popular alternative to traditional hotels, allowing travelers to rent apartments or rooms from locals. Airbnb properties are often cheaper than hotels, offering more space and privacy than hostels.

Additionally, staying in an apartment allows travelers to experience local life firsthand by living in neighborhoods rather than touristy areas. Budget Hotels: Budget hotels are also an option for young adults traveling on a budget.

These hotels offer clean, basic rooms with essential amenities such as a bed, bathroom, and Wi-Fi access. While budget hotels may not be as luxurious as higher-end options, they provide a comfortable stay at an affordable price.

When it comes to choosing accommodation in Europe, young adults traveling on a budget should first identify their priorities (privacy vs. socializing) and interests (touristy vs. local areas), then consider the available options (hostels vs. apartments, rentals vs. budget hotels). Whichever alternative one chooses, always confirm the location’s safety before booking any accommodations in unfamiliar places or neighborhoods.

Saving money while traveling (food, sightseeing, transportation, etc.)

When traveling as a young adult, money can be tight, and it’s important to be smart about your spending. Here are some tips on how to save money while traveling in Europe.

First up, food. Eating out can be expensive, especially in touristy areas.

One way to save money on food is by cooking for yourself. If you’re staying in a hostel or Airbnb, look for accommodations with kitchens to make your meals.

Another option is to grab groceries from a local supermarket or street market and picnic in a park or other scenic spot. Not only will this save you money, but it’s also a great way to enjoy the local culture and scenery.

Next up is sightseeing. Europe is full of amazing sights and attractions with an entry fee.

However, there are ways around these fees if you research beforehand. Many museums offer free entry on certain days or during specific hours.

Some cities also offer free walking tours led by locals who share their knowledge and insights about the city’s history and culture. Additionally, many churches are open to the public for free and are often filled with beautiful artwork and architecture.

Transportation can consume a big chunk of your budget if you must be more careful. While taxis may seem convenient, they’re often very expensive compared to public transportation options like buses and trains, which can easily take you around the city at an affordable cost (although buses may take longer than taxis as they do multiple stops).

If you plan and book tickets online in advance for trains or budget airlines between cities (or countries), you could save significantly more than purchasing same-day tickets from train stations/airports directly. By being strategic about food choices, sightseeing activities, and transportation methods, you can stretch your budget further while still having an incredible time exploring Europe!

Staying safe while traveling

Safety should always be a top priority when traveling to a new place.

Europe is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, but it’s important to take precautions to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Firstly, research the destination and learn about any potential safety concerns.

This could include dangerous areas of the city, scams to watch out for, or risky activities to avoid. It’s also good to check government travel advisories before you go.

While in Europe, ensure you always keep your valuables safe. This includes keeping your passport and other important documents in a secure location – consider using a money belt or hidden pocket.

Be aware of your surroundings and monitor your belongings when in public places. In addition, it’s important to stay alert and aware when out at night or in unfamiliar surroundings.

Avoid walking alone late at night and stick to well-lit areas with plenty of people. Consider taking public transportation or calling a taxi to return to your hotel after dark.

Overall, staying safe while traveling in Europe is largely about using common sense and being prepared. By taking simple precautions and staying vigilant throughout your trip, you can have a fun and safe experience exploring this exciting continent!

Meeting locals and other young travelers

One of the best parts of traveling as a young adult is the opportunity to meet people worldwide.

Whether it’s locals or other young travelers, there are plenty of ways to connect with people and make new friends during your Europe trip . Meeting locals can be a great way to learn about the culture of the places you’re visiting and get insider tips on things to do.

One of my favorite ways to connect with locals is through Couchsurfing. This website allows you to stay with local hosts for free and get a taste of living in their city.

It’s also a great way to meet other travelers since many hosts organize events or outings for their guests. If Couchsurfing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to meet locals.

Joining a language exchange group or taking a cooking class can be fun to meet people who share your interests. Another option is conversing with people while exploring–whether at a cafe, museum, or park.

Of course, meeting other young travelers is also an important part of the experience. Many hostels organize social events like pub crawls or walking tours to help guests meet each other.

You can also join online travel communities like Couchsurfing or Meetup.com, which often have groups for young backpackers traveling through Europe. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself – chances are others are looking for new friends too!

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

Valuable travel discounts and deals for college students and young adults

When my son turned 18, we suddenly had to rethink the way both he and we as a family traveled.

Quickly realizing that he needed his own paid Clear membership and TSA PreCheck number and that hotels no longer considered him a "kid" when we made a reservation, I envisioned a life of added dollar signs everywhere I looked.

Related: Child turning 18? Here's everything you need to know before the next time they travel

Luckily, I was wrong. Yes, young adults have added expenses (hello, car insurance premiums, and don't even get me started on exorbitant college tuition), but there are some hidden perks to being an 18-plus student, including rail deals and airline discounts.

With all of this top of mind, I couldn't help but wonder: Why do airlines, which are notorious for watching their bottom lines, want to give college kids a break?

"Loyalty matters greatly for airlines," said Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going . "Loyal customers help fill planes without spending marketing dollars while simultaneously feeding the revenue beast through cobranded credit cards [if they have one]. Gaining a loyal following takes time, so why not target people when they are young to help build that brand trust?"

Building loyalty plus saving money? Now that sounds like a win-win scenario to me.

You may be surprised to discover that a number of airlines, especially international carriers, provide perks to student travelers, including discounts and increased luggage allowances, which come in handy for study abroad programs.

The following are the discounts that were active and had the most availability at press time, but check with other carriers if you have foreign travel within other regions planned since there may be other deals available.

United Airlines

United is the only U.S. airline that offers a consistent year-round discount just for young adults. You don't need to be a student to take advantage of this rate, either. Young adult travelers between 18 and 23 are eligible for discounts that start at 5% but are sometimes much more than that depending on the route, according to TPGers' firsthand experiences.

Note that this discount is only available on the United app.

Book before March 31 for Emirates' special sale for students . This deal is especially flexible for both younger and older students, with an extensive age range between 16 and 31 years old. Travelers need to present a current student ID or school acceptance letter at check-in.

Emirates' deal extends to 250 destinations, including some in the U.S., if you book your flight by March 31 and use the promo code "STUDENT" at booking. This code applies a discount of up to 10% on economy- and business-class fares. You also get an additional 10 kilograms (22 pounds) more weight for luggage or one extra piece of baggage depending on the route, plus flexible options to change your flight.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore's Student Privileges program was one of the most extensive discount programs I've found, offering reduced fares to students around the globe after you've verified that you're an active student through its KrisFlyer student verification service. After student status has been verified, you'll receive a 10% discount for Lite, Value and Standard fares in economy and for premium economy fares.

Students also get an increased luggage allowance, with three pieces allowed from the U.S. and Canada and 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of luggage elsewhere. Plus, Singapore Airlines will waive any fees for the first booking change you make. (Know, though, that if you keep changing, the carrier will start charging.)

Scandinavian Airlines

SAS makes booking its youth tickets very simple. The discount for this one applies to anyone age 12 to 25, and you do not need to prove eligibility beyond providing your birthdate.

Note that this discount only promises "special rates" without a specific percentage given, and no special luggage allowance is available. Still, it's worth checking out since we're fans of the airline's flight deals for kids .

If you're planning on studying abroad, definitely bookmark this deal: Lufthansa offers student fares with proof of enrollment for bookings originating in the U.S.

Student fares are only available in economy to destinations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India. Not only is the airfare discounted, but you'll be able to check a second bag for free.

Reduced fares are clearly identified as "Student Fare" on the flight selection page. Passengers must be full-time students age 16 and above, enrolled in a higher educational institution with a valid student email address, and must have a valid form of identification.

If you're a student going to school in Europe, budget airline Ryanair has a deal for you. Register with the Erasmus Student Network (a nonprofit, international student union) and you'll be eligible to get a 10% discount on Ryanair's already affordable tickets, plus a free checked bag.

Note that fares must be booked at least 28 days in advance, and the deal is only eligible during the school term (from Sept. 1 to June 15).

Select rail companies also offer travel deals and discounts for college-age students.

Amtrak is generous with its definition of student, allowing anyone between the ages of 17 and 24 to take advantage of its national student discount , which provides a 15% discount on regular fares.

Since this is a promotion my family regularly tries to book when possible (my son goes to college in Washington, D.C., and I live in New Jersey), I'm well versed in some of the pros and cons of this deal.

According to Amtrak, "The discount will automatically be applied when qualifying travel is selected. Or, use the Amtrak app and enter code V814 when booking your trip." I suggest doing the latter to ensure the reduced fare is applied to your booking.

There are a number of restrictions, and there's definitely a limited number of seats on each train that are eligible, but when it works, the savings are worth the effort. Also note that the earlier you book, the less expensive tickets are, so you'll have a better chance of saving more money. Keep in mind, too, that this deal must be booked at least a day before travel.

TPG has been following the rollout of Florida's Brightline train with much enthusiasm. The new, modern train system links Miami to Orlando with stops in several South Florida locations; it's a game changer for Florida travel, especially for trips to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando .

Brightline has great rates for students on its current routes, including a 25% discount for students when you create an account with an active university email for most Florida colleges.

Exploring Europe by train is a rite of passage for students and young adults from around the world. One reason: It's an affordable and easy way to travel.

This is especially true with Eurail's Youth Discount , which reduces rail pass rates by up to 25%. You can use the youth pass discount if you're at least 12 years old but no older than 27.

Other deals for students

Student IDs unlock a world of discounts in the arts. Almost every museum I've visited around the globe has reduced or free admission for students who can prove their school affiliation or age. (Remember to always carry your student ID when you're traveling to take advantage of these deals.) Many Broadway theaters and performance venues elsewhere have student rush seats, too, making it possible to show up on the day of the show and spend some time in a line to score a steeply reduced ticket.

Unfortunately, you won't find deals on car rentals for young adults since the minimum rental age is usually 23. When there's a lower minimum age, like at Enterprise, you'll typically find an additional fee for younger drivers gets applied to the reservation.

Hotels are another area where student discounts are hard to find, but if you begin building your own brand loyalty by joining one or more rewards programs, you can eventually rack up enough nights, stays or points to qualify for elite status, which comes with all kinds of extra perks.

Bottom line

Being a young adult brings travel benefits in the form of discounts on airlines and trains. Students can almost always show their student IDs for reduced or waived admission to museums, too.

Traveling as a young adult

travelling young adults

Planning a trip to Europe in the middle of the semester right around midterms was probably not Emilee Hastings’ brightest idea, not to mention with such a tight budget, but after she had put her mind to visiting Ireland, she wouldn’t let anything stop her.

Hastings and her friend, Allyson Fife, both BYU students, had been talking about visiting Ireland for months. As two redheads, they felt that it was their right to visit the motherland of gingers and cheer.

With not much of a plan or knowing how they would accomplish such a feat, they bought airplane tickets as soon as they saw a sale and figured they would do what they could to just make it work. They each spent months gearing up for the big trip.

They made an effort to set aside a portion of money from each paycheck and, as the fall semester began, they communicated with professors about their plans to take a week off. They planned to complete assignments and exams before they left so they wouldn’t fall behind in their studies.

“Once I got there it was all totally worth it,” Hastings said. “It was so stress free and I was just focusing on being in the moment and enjoying Ireland, not worrying about anything else.” The experience of planning a trip, saving for it and making it work with the demands of school and work was empowering.

“I felt like I could do it on my own,” Hastings said. Hastings and Fife proved to themselves that traveling as young adults was possible, exciting and worthwhile. When traveling is a priority, even as a young adult, with limited income and the weight of school and work, it still can happen.

There’s always a way to make it work. Being in Ireland was unlike anything Hastings had experienced before. She and Fife explored the remnants of ancient castles, took in the breathtaking beauty of some of the world’s most famous cliffs and became well-acquainted with a culture and people very different from the Provo standard.

“I feel so grateful for everything that traveling has taught me,” Hastings said. “I feel like I know so much more about different cultures and it’s really taught me that I have so much to be grateful for.”

The trip provided opportunities to learn through experience. They talked to the locals, tried new cuisines and took in the landmarks and architecture that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

Kian Bangerter, another BYU student, had also chosen to experience this kind of experiential learning by traveling abroad. Unlike Hastings and Fife, Bangerter chose to take off the whole semester instead of trying to work around classes and extra academic stress.

For Bangerter, traveling offered more than a semester’s worth of learning, so taking the time off felt like the best decision.

“(Traveling) made me realize how much I don’t know,” Bangerter said. “It actually made me want to learn more about different things rather than what I thought I wanted to study.”

From August to October, Bangerter, his sister and a friend traveled to 13 countries around Europe. The montage of countries, cultures and customs began to change the way Bangerter saw the world.

“It opened my eyes to how a whole other side of the world lives,” Bangerter said.

Hastings and Bangerter had met over the summer while working at FSY. As new friends, they had shared their plans to travel in the coming months.

Upon realizing that they would both end up in Ireland around the same time, they made plans to reconnect on the other side of the world. From Provo to Ireland, the five world travelers reconnected at the train station in Galway and shared what they had seen on their travels thus far.

“It was so exciting because we were in this whole new place that neither of us had ever been before, not a single other person in the country knew us, and here we are together exploring,” Hastings said. “It was so much fun!”

Roaming the streets together and dancing in the local pub created memories that they’ll each hold onto for a lifetime.

As the magical week in Ireland came to a close, Hastings and Fife boarded a plane back to the United States and geared up for another packed week of classes and responsibility. Bangerter, on the other hand, along with his travel partners, moved on to the next country they felt drawn to with still a few weeks left to explore and travel.

The decision to travel as college students was an easy one for both Hastings and Bangerter. The benefits of traveling young and not having responsibilities such as a full-time job or family obligations allowed for flexibility and ease in traveling which completely outweighed any potential cons.

“There are so many benefits,” Bangerter said. “First of all, you can travel cheaper because you have more energy, you’re able to see a lot, there’s also not really an opportunity cost like I wasn’t missing out on my career and it didn’t really put me behind in my education.”

There may always be obstacles in life that may seem hard to navigate through when wanting to travel such as money, school, work or other life responsibilities and obligations. The obstacles never truly go away but they’re definitely easier to work around as a young adult.

The sacrifices to travel abroad are most likely always worth it due to the life experience and world education gained, Hastings and Bangerter said. The World Tourism Organization published in its Global Report on The Power of Youth Travel that “youth travel has become one of the fastest growing segments of international tourism, representing more than 23% of the over one billion tourists traveling internationally each year.”

“Today’s young travelers venture independently to further places, stay longer and immerse in other cultures to build their life experiences,” the report says.

Resources are abundant for young adults and college students who want to travel. From study abroad opportunities to working as an au pair or just taking off a semester and applying the money that would’ve been spent on tuition toward a truly world-class education, the possibilities are endless.

Financial cost is often one of the main reasons young adults avoid traveling. However, study abroad programs often have plenty of financial aid offered, there are a plethora of websites that offer discounted rates on flights, hotels and other forms of transportation and most museums or exhibits around the world offer student discounts with a school ID, just to name a few opportunities.

Hastings said she didn’t have to take on an extra job to afford her trip. She simply made it work by cutting corners, not going out to eat as often with friends and just being more conscious of the money she spent. Bangerter, with quite a more expensive adventure, said he “basically just spent the money he would’ve spent if he had gone to school.”

By taking off the semester, he saved his tuition fund and applied it towards traveling around Europe and, when he got back, lived at home to save on regular living expenses. Travel is now back to being a viable resource and exciting source of adventure for young adults following the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

After years of halted travel and extensive restrictions, most of the world is back to normal with arms open wide for visitors. Not only has the return of regular travel been a benefit to tourists that now get to see the world just as freely as before the global pandemic, but it is an extreme source of revenue for locals abroad that suffered greatly financially through the pandemic.

Travel aids all involved. The World Tourism Organization released a study that showed how the pandemic “led to massive losses in international revenues for tourism-dependent economies: specifically, a collapse in exports of travel services (money spent by nonresident visitors in a country) and a decline in exports of transport services (such as airline revenues from tickets sold to nonresidents).”

Since the pandemic has come to a close, and travel restrictions have been lifted, it’s viable that young adults begin to travel once again to restore the economic functioning of travel and show that it is safe for the world to open up their borders to travelers once again.

Following their European adventures, both Hastings and Bangerter have since returned to classes at BYU with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world and what it can teach. Their studies have continued on and tuition was still able to be paid. Nothing but good memories and valuable experience lingers as a consequence of their time in Europe last fall.

Trump-backed Senate candidate faces GOP worries that he could be linked to adult website profile

WASHINGTON (AP) — For Republicans eager to regain the Senate majority this year, Ohio offers a prime opportunity to pick up a critical seat.

But ahead of Tuesday’s primary election, there’s mounting anxiety inside the GOP that Bernie Moreno may emerge with the nomination. After vaulting into the top tier of contenders with a coveted endorsement from Donald Trump , Moreno — who has shifted from a public supporter of LGBTQ rights to a hardline opponent — is confronting questions about the existence of a 2008 profile seeking “Men for 1-on-1 sex” on a casual sexual encounters website called Adult Friend Finder.

“Hi, looking for young guys to have fun with while traveling,” reads a caption on a photo-less profile under the username “nardo19672,” according to an Associated Press review of records made public through a massive and well-publicized data breach of the website. Records also show the profile was last accessed about six hours after it was created.

Read more: How the AP reported that someone with access to Bernie Moreno’s email created adult website profile .

The AP review confirmed that someone with access to Moreno’s email account created the profile, though the AP could not definitively confirm whether it was created by Moreno himself. Questions about the profile have circulated in GOP circles for the past month. On Thursday evening, two days after the AP first asked Moreno’s campaign about the account, the candidate’s lawyer said a former intern created the account as a prank. The lawyer provided a statement from the intern, Dan Ricci, who said he created the account as “part of a juvenile prank.”

“I am thoroughly embarrassed by an aborted prank I pulled on my friend, and former boss, Bernie Moreno, nearly two decades ago,” Ricci said. The AP couldn’t independently confirm Ricci’s statement and he didn’t immediately respond to messages left for him on multiple phone numbers listed to him. He donated $6,599 to Moreno’s campaign last year, according to campaign finance records.

Moreno’s lawyer, Charles Harder, insisted Moreno “had nothing to do with the AFF account.”

Once a premier swing state , Ohio has moved sharply to the right in recent years. Trump easily won the state in 2016 and 2020 and the GOP controls top statewide offices along with both chambers of the legislature. That has raised hopes among Republicans that Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown won’t be able to overcome the headwinds that have largely swept his party out of power in Ohio.

And with Republicans just one seat short of a Senate majority if they also win the presidency, the results in Ohio could have major implications for the balance of power in Washington.

The dynamics have raised the stakes for Trump, who sided with Moreno in a crowded field that includes Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan. Trump is scheduled to appear alongside Moreno on Saturday at a rally in Dayton, Ohio.

In a statement, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung blamed the media for being “obsessed with anyone who supports the America First movement.”

GOP frustration

Moreno’s potential vulnerability has sparked frustration among senior Republican operatives and elected officials in Washington and Ohio, according to seven people who are directly familiar with conversations about how to address the matter. The people requested anonymity to avoid running afoul of Trump and his allies. They described concerns surrounding Moreno’s candidacy as so acute that some party officials sought a review of data to determine his potential involvement.

That review, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter, linked the profile to Moreno’s work email address.

The AP’s independent review reached the same conclusion. The AP obtained data from the Adult Friend Finder leak as well as information that remains publicly accessible on the company’s website. An analysis of those records show the profile was created and authenticated by someone who had access to Moreno’s work email account.

Beyond the work email, the profile lists Moreno’s correct date of birth, while geolocation data indicates that the account was set up for use in a part of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where property records show Moreno’s parents owned a home at the time. The account’s username — nardo19672 — appears to refer to Moreno’s full first name, Bernardo, as well as the year and month of his birth in February 1967.

“This is a telling example of how this data doesn’t just go away,” said Jake Williams, a prominent cybersecurity researcher and a former National Security Agency offensive hacker who independently confirmed that Moreno’s work email address was included in a copy of the leaked data from Adult Friend Finder.

Harder also provided a statement from Helder Rosa, a former vice president for Bernie Moreno Companies, that said Ricci was an intern in November 2008 and that people in such roles had duties that included checking emails. Rosa has donated $12,400 to Moreno’s two campaigns for Senate, according to campaign finance records. He didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Moreno, 57, was born in Colombia to a wealthy family before immigrating to Florida as a child and becoming a U.S. citizen at the age of 18, according to a biography on his website. He purchased his first car dealership in 2005 and used his wealth to build an empire that came to include high-end dealerships in multiple states.

Shifting views

And before Moreno began articulating anti-LGBTQ views during his runs for public office, he made comments that seemed to reflect acceptance of homosexuality.

When Cleveland and Akron won their bid to host the 2014 Gay Games, an Olympics-like international competition featuring LGBTQ athletes, Moreno was an enthusiastic supporter while his auto dealership company was a financial sponsor, according to an opinion article he wrote for the business publication Crain’s Cleveland Business.

“A successful Gay Games would go a long way toward boosting our images as cities that welcome all,” Moreno wrote while issuing a call for northeast Ohio’s philanthropic community to rally behind the event. “They need help to put them on. Hosting a complex multi-venue event requires a network of financial supporters and volunteers. It must be a community effort.”

During a 2016 question and answer session posted to his company’s YouTube page, Moreno noted that his eldest son is gay, while crediting the TV show “Modern Family” with changing perceptions about same-sex marriage.

“We watched these two guys and, we say: ’You know what? They’re good guys, they’re great people. ... They are not this distorted thing that is out there.’ And I think those are the kinds of ways that you can break down stereotypes,” Moreno said during the event.

When fliers appeared on the campus of Cleveland State University in October 2017 urging gay and transgender students to commit suicide, Moreno, who was then chairman of the school’s board of trustees, was the leading signer of a letter condemning the “abhorrent message” as “an attack on our whole campus.”

As recently as 2020, his companies were included on a list of Ohio businesses that supported a law banning discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Leaders of Equality Ohio, a leading LGBTQ rights group in the state, said Moreno joined the campaign supporting the legislation after a conversation with the organization’s leadership in 2017 during event promoting the bill.

But that all appeared to change when Moreno first ran for Senate in 2021 before bowing out of the race early. He began to distance himself from his past activism, professing to be unfamiliar with the anti-discrimination legislation, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported at the time.

During his current Senate campaign, Moreno has accused advocates for LGBTQ rights of advancing a “radical” agenda of “indoctrination.” He is endorsed by Ohio Value Voters, a group that opposes LGBTQ rights, including same-sex marriage. And his campaign’s social media accounts have blasted his opponents, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and State Sen. Matt Dolan, as supporters of a “radical trans agenda.”

A recent TV ad paid for by Buckeye Values, a pro-Moreno super PAC, superimposes a picture of LaRose over a rainbow flag while attacking him as “a champion for trans equality.” The ad cites LaRose’s past endorsement for a bill — which Moreno’s company previously supported — that would have banned discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.

“Can you trust Frank LaRose?” a narrator asks, while also criticizing LaRose for making favorable statements in the past about Equality Ohio, a prominent gay rights group. Moreno supported the same legislation through his companies.

Donald Trump Jr. later posted the ad to X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, stating “I have no doubt” Ohio voters will elect “the real conservative @berniemoreno over leftwing, pro-trans Frank LaRose.”

Moreno’s shifting rhetoric on LGBTQ issues “is a real shame,” said Maria Bruno, the public policy director for Equality Ohio, which advocates for LGBTQ rights. ”Anyone who is going to be compromising their value system just to win an election, they lose a lot of credibility.”

Associated Press data journalist Larry Fenn contributed to this report from New York.
