Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

Holiday and Museum Closures

Museum visits and personal shopping time may be disrupted due to unforeseen circumstances or many religious, state and local holidays observed throughout the world.

Motorcoach Washrooms

Most motorcoaches used on our tours are equipped with washrooms except safari vehicles, exotic locations, and some of our Explorations tours. These are typically for emergency use, as we make plenty of comfort stops, allowing you the opportunity to use public restrooms and/or stretch your legs.

Seat Rotation

Seats are rotated onboard the coach for all Collette tours under the direction of the tour manager. So that we do not show partiality among passengers, exceptions cannot be made.

Maps and Photos

Maps shown on tour pages are current at the time of printing and may not reflect actual tour routing should the tour change. Photos shown on tour pages are reflective of the area(s) visited, but may not be included in the actual tour itinerary and the conditions you experience may be different than depicted in the photograph(s).

Baggage Disclaimer

Although every effort is made to handle passengers’ luggage as carefully as possible, Collette is not responsible for and does not assume liability or accept claims for loss of or damage to luggage due to breakage, theft or wear and tear through hotel and group carrier handling. It is recommended for your own self-interest and protection that you have adequate insurance to cover these eventualities. There are limitations by coach and air carrier as to the number and size of bags which can be carried onboard and in bulk storage. Be sure to ask your travel professional about such restrictions before departing for your tour.

Checked Baggage Charges: Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage. Please contact your airline or refer to its website for detailed information regarding your airline’s checked baggage policies. Please be advised baggage fees may apply on most trans-border flights. This is a fee levied by the airlines, not Collette, and may be subject to change.

The following is an outline of the Non-Insurance Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver, Insurance Benefits and non-insurance assistance services that make up the Travel Protection Plan.

Part A Waiver Only provided by Collette Travel Service, Inc.: The Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver is provided by Collette, is not an insurance benefit and is not underwritten by Zurich American Insurance Company. Payment of a per person Travel Protection Plan fee guarantees a full refund of all payments (including deposit), except the Travel Protection Plan fee itself, made to Collette for travel arrangements in case of cancellation of your travel plans for any reason prior to the day of departure. The Cancellation Fee Waiver only reimburses airline tickets you have purchased from Collette.

Exception: If you originally purchased Instant Purchase airline tickets, this Part A Travel Protection Plan does not provide a refund for the airline tickets, taxes or fees, in the event of a cancellation. This air ticket may be covered by Collette’s Travel Protection Plan under Part B if you cancel your trip for covered reasons (see Part B for more details).

The Part A Waiver portion of Collette’s Travel Protection Plan protects you from penalties in the event you have a need to cancel your entire inclusive tour package up to the day prior to departure. The Part A Waiver portion of the Travel Protection Plan does not indemnify you from penalties if you choose to cancel partial tour components or air. If you choose to partially cancel your tour, you will be responsible for a revision fee as well as any penalties that are incurred at the time of the cancellation.

For Residents of MN, MO, NY and WA Only: The Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver (Part A) can be purchased separately without the purchase of the Travel Protection Plan. Contact Collette at 1-800-832-4656 in order to purchase the Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver separately.

Collette’s Part A Waiver portion of the Travel Protection Plan does not reimburse any single supplement charges which arise from an individual’s traveling companion electing to cancel for any reason prior to departure. In this case, the single supplement will be deducted from the refund of the person who cancels. (However, the Part B Benefits referenced below include a single supplement benefit for certain covered reasons, as detailed in Part B.) Division of this charge between the two passengers involved is solely their responsibility. If insufficient funds are deducted from the canceling client, the traveling client will be charged the remaining portion of the single supplement.

Your Payment for the Travel Protection Plan (if chosen) must be received by Collette with your deposit. The fee is nonrefundable, nontransferable and valid for each applicant only.

Collette can assume no responsibility for and cannot be held liable for any wrongful, negligent or unauthorized acts or omissions of any travel agent or travel agency other than that of Collette Travel Service, Inc. itself, and its own employees.

Where to Present Part A Claims

To request a refund under the Part A Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver portion of the Travel Protection Plan, please call Collette and send any unused airline tickets to:

Collette ATTN: Customer Service Department 162 Middle Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860

If cancellation occurs prior to departure, contact the Collette Reservations Department. When a client cancels prior to departure, any refunds are processed through the booking agent.

The following is an outline of the Non-Insurance Travel Assistance Services and Insurance Benefits provided in Part B.

Part B Insurance Benefits are provided by Zurich American Insurance Company: On tour, insurance benefits can be provided if you: must interrupt your trip or return home early for a covered reason; incur medical expenses for a covered sickness or injury; need to be evacuated due to covered medical reason; suffer a baggage loss or delay of more than 24 hours; are delayed on tour for 12 hours or more for a covered reason.

This benefit is only applicable to Instant Purchase air tickets and any single supplement penalties you are assessed if your Family Member or Traveling Companion has his/her Trip Canceled. This does not cover any other land, air or water Travel Arrangements.

Western USA National Parks Loop

5 days | explore the national parks of the usa’s wild west.

Jeep excursion in Monument Valley, Utah, USA

Deserts, canyons, lakes and valleys await on a five-day adventure through western USA’s most spectacular national parks. Hike through the diverse scenery of Zion National Park, marvel at sandstone spires in Bryce Canyon National Park, join a Navajo guide to learn about the history of Monument Valley and take in one of the natural wonders of the world at Grand Canyon National Park. Let an expert local guide share stories of the landscape and discover there’s more to each destination than what meets the eye.

Trip overview

  • Hike through the varied landscapes of Zion National Park, taking in views of massive canyon walls and red sandstone cliffs as you go.
  • Learn about the culture and history of Monument Valley during a Navajo guided tour, followed by a traditional homecooked, family-style Navajo lunch.
  • Stroll along the canyon rim in Bryce Canyon National Park to admire the out-of-this-world sandstone spires known as hoodoos.
  • Kayak across the waters of Lake Powell, weaving your way past fascinating rock formations as your leader shares stories of the lake’s history.
  • Marvel at one of the nation’s greatest national parks, The Grand Canyon, and walk along the rim, hike into the canyon or take in an epic sunset or sunrise (depending on season)
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, the Grand Canyon Conservancy. Donations help them protect Grand Canyon National Park and support trail restoration, conservation of native plants and wildlife, and educational programs. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • This is a fast-paced trip that covers a lot of ground in a short time. You'll be travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • The trip involves a lot of walking through Zion National Park and Bryce National park, so be prepared with hiking shoes, a water bottle and day pack.
  • Lunches will be simple picnic style so perhaps bring some of your own snacks if you think you’ll get hungry between meals.
  • We will be travelling to the desert, which means it is often very warm during the day but cold at night, so make sure you pack the appropriate clothing for all weather.
  • You may also want to check out our Best of Western USA if you have a longer time to explore the region:

Welcome to Las Vegas! The real wild west is home to some of the USA’s most incredible scenery. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 8 am. Then, you’ll hop aboard a private van. Get to know each other over a picnic lunch, then venture into the stunning landscapes of Zion National Park. Join your leader for a guided hike, then spend the night in Springdale – known as the gateway to the park.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Zion National Park - Walks

Please make your own way to the hotel lobby to meet your leader at 8 am this morning. It’s recommended you append an extra day or two in Vegas so you have plenty of time to get there.

Your total travel time today is approximately 3 hours.

The exact trail we hike in Zion will depend on the group's interest and ability, and will typically be either the Emerald Pools trail, or the Watchman trail. The hiking is easy to moderate with a distance of approximately 3 miles/4.8 km with 350 ft/107 mt of elevation gain.

After breakfast this morning, it’s time to make tracks for Bryce Canyon National Park – make sure your camera is ready to go, as some of the views you’ll come across today are truly out of this world! Take a short drive in your private vehicle, then spend the morning hiking through the epic landscapes of the park. Walk along the canyon rim and marvel at hundreds of unique sandstone towers, known as hoodoos, that jut out from the natural amphitheatre. Relax while you enjoy a picnic lunch and take in your magnificent surroundings, then hike down into the canyon for a closer look at the fascinating hoodoos. Then, drive on to the town of Page, where you’ll spend the night.

  • Bryce Canyon - Leader-led Walk

Your total travel time today is approximately 5 hours.

Today's hiking distance is 3 miles (4.8 km) with 450 feet (137 m) of elevation gain.

Bryce Canyon is situated at 8000 ft (2440 m) above sea level. You can expect cooler temperatures, thinner and dryer air than elsewhere on this trip. Make sure you stay hydrated while hiking in the park.

Journey south this morning, driving through more spectacular scenery before arriving at Lake Powell. This gorgeous reservoir is certainly a sight to behold from the shore but to really appreciate it, you’ve got to get on the water. Jump in a kayak and paddle across the water’s surface, weaving your way through remarkable rock formations while your leader regales you with stories of the lake’s history. Back on dry land, set out for a gentle walk along Horseshoe Bend, taking in beautiful views with every step. This afternoon there is an option to visit Antelope Canyon before returning to Page for the evening.

  • Horseshoe Bend Visit
  • Lake Powell - Kayaking
  • Page - Antelope Canyon Tour - USD70

You will get wet during the kayaking excursion, therefore we recommend wearing a swimsuit and water shoes/sandals, or bring a change of clothes and shoes with you on this day.

During November and December, you may be unable to kayak on Lake Powell. There will be a local slot canyon walk included when kayaking is not possible. This hike does involve soft sand, stairs and ramps, so it’s best to wear closed-toe shoes.

ANTELOPE CANYON: Since this tour is very popular and tends to sell out, we recommend you pre-book your space. You can book any time slot 2pm or later. Please book the Lower Antelope Canyon Hiking Tour here: https://www.antelopelowercanyon.com/tours/

Start the day with a drive to Monument Valley – one of the world’s most iconic sights. If this landscape dotted with towering sandstone buttes looks familiar to you, it’s no surprise – Monument Valley has been the filming location for many famous Western films. More importantly, this is the native land of the Navajo. When you arrive, you’ll transfer from your vehicle to a 4WD and enjoy a Navajo-guided tour of Monument Valley, where you’ll have the chance to learn more about their rich culture and history in the area before sitting down to a traditional homecooked, family-style Navajo lunch. Continue your journey onto the iconic Grand Canyon for some awe-inspiring walks along the rim.

  • Monument Valley - Navajo guided 4x4 Jeep tour including traditional lunch

We aim to experience either sunset or sunrise at the Grand Canyon rim, depending on season. During spring and fall when the sun sets earlier and rises later we typically visit for sunrise on Day 5. During the summer months we visit for sunset on Day 4.

This morning it's time to return to Las Vegas, but first we'll make a stop along Historic Route 66. You’ll arrive back in Las Vegas at approximately 4 pm where your adventure will come to an end.

  • Grand Canyon National Park - Entrance

Your total travel time today is approximately 4.5 hours.

There is no accommodation included in Las Vegas on the last day. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). Speak to an Intrepid booking agent for more information.

4 breakfasts, 3 lunches

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

U.S. National Parks Tour Selection Trips

  • Since America ’s National Parks are so spread out, it’s best to focus on tours that take in a few parks in one region or perhaps one park in conjunction with a broader regional tour.
  • Consider spending an entire week touring one major park, such as Yosemite or Yellowstone.
  • A two-week tour might include the Grand Canyon along with Utah’s Arches, Bryce Canyon, and Zion national parks, as well as Yellowstone and Grand Teton.
  • Yosemite can easily be combined in a week’s tour with Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks in north-central California, along with perhaps Lake Tahoe, San Francisco and Monterey.
  • Look for tours that spend nights in some of the national parks’ classic lodges, such as Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Inn or Yosemite’s Ahwahnee.
  • Camping in many National Parks is also very popular for budget tourists.
  • Land tours to Denali National Park, home to North America’s tallest peak, are a frequent extension following Alaska small ship cruises.
  • Since U.S. national parks can get very crowded during high season, consider an off-season visit – Yellowstone in winter or Death Valley in summer aren’t for everyone, but spring or fall can be beautiful.

Best Time to Travel

U.S. National Parks are top travel destinations and as you can imagine, particularly for young children and adults. This means that summer travel to national parks can be downright crowded. Summer is also a time of abundance in wildlife and of course, good weather.

The Great Smoky Mountains saw over 12 million visitors in 2019. You can also expect especially heavy summer crowds in the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain, Zion, Yellowstone, and Yosemite among others.

So when is the best time to visit national parks?

If you’re looking for a quieter experience and an easier hit to the wallet, October through February are the best times to visit U.S. national parks. The exception is in parks where fall foliage is at its prime in September and October.

There are other considerations you might keep in mind as you plan your national park visit. If you enjoy winter wonderlands consider traveling to these areas in December through March although some parks, like Glacier National Park, will have limited to no accessibility.

Glacier’s iconic Going to the Sun Road doesn’t open until mid-June, sometimes later depending on snow. In Hawaii where there are 8 national parks, snow is usually not a problem unless trying to get to the top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island but the low season falls during the spring and fall.

Expect more rain and fog on some islands. And speaking of rain, July is a stunning time to be in the Rocky Mountain high country when blooms are at their peak after the spring rains. You’ll also have a better chance of getting away from crowds with back country hiking.

Physical Level Requirements. Will There be Hiking?

National parks call out for discovery beyond park roads. There’s more to see of course if you’re willing and able to hike but this doesn’t necessarily mean that all trips are geared toward hiking.

For sure, they tend to be given the nature of the destination. There are over 100 U.S. National Parks tours with a few dozen of them falling in the physically “ very easy ” and “ easy ” category. And even the strenuous ones don’t always mean strenuous hiking but rather, a packed itinerary. Read the trip descriptions to learn the details.

Packing Suggestions

One of the benefits of booking a guided tour is that the company will provide a packing list which will depend on what type of travel you’ll be doing.

If camping, while much of the gear is provided, you’ll likely be asked to bring some items like water bottles, good hiking shoes and head lamps. If you’ll be headed to Death Valley , sun gear is critical and if you’ll be on a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon , water gear will be an important part of your comfort and safety. In some locations, you’ll need insect repellent. Of course, don’t forget any medications and your camera!

All you need to know about National Park Tours

How many national parks are in the usa.

There are currently 62 national parks in the USA. Of these parks, 14 are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and 21 are UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. The US National Park Service’s records have registered over 14 billion visits across the parks since 1904, with 318 million visits in 2018 alone. The most popular park is the Great Smoky Mountains with 11,421,200 visits.

What are the most beautiful national parks?

There are dozens of breathtaking national parks around the world. Some of our favorite national parks vacations include exploring amongst the giant sequoia trees of Yosemite, the hot springs and alpine forests of Yellowstone and the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon. We also love the ancient landscapes of the Serengeti, the burning sunsets of the Maasai Mara and the wild bushland of Kruger National Park.

Where can you see wildlife in Africa?

Africa’s national parks are the top places to see wildlife, from the iconic Big Five to the rarer species. Some of the best national parks for wildlife spotting are the Serengeti in Tanzania, Kruger in South Africa, Etosha in Namibia, the Maasai Mara in Kenya and Gonarezhou in Zimbabwe. You can visit all of these destinations with Trafalgar’s national park tours.

Which national parks are free?

There are several entrance fee-free days to the US national parks, but you can also find some national parks that are free to enter all year round. These include the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina, Cumberland Gap in Virginia, Channel Islands National Park in California, North Cascades National Park in Washington, and Biscayne National Park in Florida.

9 awesome National Parks you can do in a day

Posted: July 26, 2023 | Last updated: July 26, 2023

Our team adores National Parks, and while we’ve spent countless hours planning and executing days or even weeks-long trips around some of the best National Parks for hiking, we know that sometimes you’re short on time. While there are many parks that really merit a longer visit, such as Yosemite and Glacier, believe it or not there are actually some parks that you can do justice to in a day. In this gallery, we’ve picked some of our favorite National Parks that you can get a feel for in a day or less that still deliver mesmerizing natural landscapes and great hiking opportunities. And just so we’re clear here, you can definitely spend more time in any of these parks, but if you’re short on time, you can see a lot in just a few hours.

                     By Julia Clarke

Utah’s landscape feels a bit like landing on Mars and it’s certainly worth spending some time visiting its five National Parks such as Zion and Arches. However, one of its five parks really lends itself to a short visit, and that’s Bryce Canyon down in the southwest, about a two-hour drive from Capitol Reef.

Bryce Canyon is famous for being home to the world’s largest collection of hoodoos. A hoodoo is a tall, thin rock spire (sometimes called a tent rock or fairy chimney) and Bryce’s vast collection of them can be found on a high plateau at the top of the Grand Staircase. With its proximity to Zion and Capitol Reef, this park makes a great stop between the two where you can stretch your legs with a short, easy hike like Sunset to Sunrise and take in some stunning views.

1. Bryce Canyon, Utah

Considered one of the world’s great natural wonders, White Sands in southern New Mexico is the largest gypsum dune field on the planet. Thousands of years ago, this desert basin boasted lakes and grasslands, but slow desert warming dissolved the gypsum from the surrounding mountains, leaving an otherworldly swath of white gypsum sand today.

Hiking is a great way to get a feel for the landscape and there are boardwalk and sand trails, but you can also enjoy the vistas via a 16-mile drive of the stunning Dunes Drive Road, which takes under an hour.

2. White Sands, New Mexico

Further south in Colorado, This National Park is often overlooked because it sounds, well, just like a giant sandbox. In reality, here you’ll find virtual mountains of wind-sculpted sand, some up to 750 feet high, making up the tallest sand dunes in North America over an area of about 30 square miles. The otherworldly dunes were formed by sediment from the surrounding mountain ranges after lakes receded from the San Luis Valley and of course, your kids will entertain themselves for hours running around in the sand.

3. Great Sand Dunes, Colorado

In Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park gets the most attention and it’s such a big park that the best way to do it justice is to spend a few days there. The state, however, has a few other National Parks that are equally splendid and easy to see in a day.

Take Great Sand Dunes down near Pueblo, for example. This park is often overlooked because it sounds, well, just like a giant sandbox. In reality, here you’ll find virtual mountains of wind-sculpted sand, some up to 750 feet high, making up the tallest sand dunes in North America over an area of about 30 square miles. The otherworldly dunes were formed by sediment from the surrounding mountain ranges after lakes receded from the San Luis Valley and are a must-see in Colorado.

The best time to see the sand dunes is at sunset, so plan to arrive by the late afternoon to head up the dunes.

This National Park is sometimes described as the Grand Canyon in miniature, but don’t let that description fool you into thinking it’s small. This 48-mile long canyon plunges over 2,000ft into the earth and is easily big and deep enough to be vertigo-inducing. Carved out by the Gunnison River, and time, this near-vertical canyon is so-named because it is so deep that parts of the river receive no more than 33 minutes of sunlight per day. Fourteen miles of the canyon were declared a National Park in 1999 offering visitors the chance to marvel at geological history like the 2,250ft Painted Wall, the tallest sheer cliff in Colorado as well as activities like hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and camping. It's close enough to Great Sand Dunes to visit both in one Colorado road trip.

Fun fact: The Gunnison River drops, on average, 43 feet per mile as it rushes through the canyon – that’s six times more than the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

4. Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado

If you’re touring Colorado, make sure to stop off and gawp at the Black Canyon off the Gunnison in the southwestern part of the state near Montrose.

Sometimes described as the Grand Canyon in miniature, this 48-mile long canyon plunges over 2,000ft into the earth and is easily big and deep enough to be vertigo-inducing.

Head to the ranger station on the North Rim for a quick view, or from there you can pick up the North Vista Trail and hike for up to seven miles.

Kids love exploring hidden caves and Carlsbad Caverns in the Guadalupe Mountains boasts 119 of them, the longest of which is over 120 miles. Take an elevator down to the Big Room and discover stalactites and stalagmites in the massive limestone chambers. When you’re ready to resurface, head up and explore hiking trails that take you across the ancient sea ledges and deep rocky canyons of the Chihuahuan Desert.

5. Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico

Carlsbad Caverns are in the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico and while there are above-ground with hiking trails that take you across the ancient sea ledges and deep rocky canyons, the true appeal of Carlsbad Caverns are its 119 caves, the longest of which is over 120 miles.

You can explore the caves on your own, but the best way to see them, especially if you’re short on time, is to book a ranger tour. The landscape here was once part of an ancient underwater reef called Capitan Reef, and marine fossils can be found embedded in the rock.

If you’re heading down to south-central Kentucky, take a tour of these mammoth-sized caves with a park ranger. Not only is the cave system here twice as long as the next longest one (in Mexico), it might be even longer than we think. Some 400 miles of it have already been mapped out, but geologists think there may be another 200 miles of undiscovered cave system to go.

Most of the tours take around two hours so you can learn all about the fascinating subterranean geology between breakfast and lunch.

6. Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

This mountainous National Park in Central California is popular with rock climbers who are drawn to the massive rock monoliths that are leftovers from an extinct volcano. Hikers can also enjoy these rocks spires as well as breathtaking Talus Caves on over 80 miles of trails.

7. Pinnacles, California

A little south of the Bay Area and inland from Carmel lies Pinnacles and as one of the smaller National Parks, it’s easy to see a lot in a day here. The landscape on show at Pinnacles displays started forming 23 million years ago, when multiple volcanoes erupted on the San Andreas fault 200 miles away and flowed to eventually form spectacular rock spires that are popular today among rock climbers.

Visitors here can explore eroded vestiges of a long extinct volcano, high rock walls, talus caves that are home to over 13 species of bats as well as excellent bird watching including peregrine falcons and California Condors which are released here.

With 154 miles of explored passages, Wind Cave is the the third-longest cave in the US and the seventh-longest in the entire world. The cave is known for its extensive calcite formations, in particular honeycomb-like boxwork formations, and is so-named because the passage of air within the caves makes it feel as though it is breathing. You can only explore the cave in a ranger-guided tour and advance bookings are recommended.

8. Wind Cave, South Dakota

Marshes are low lying areas and, unlike deserts and dunes, are always waterlogged, either due to rains or tides. Also called wetlands, marshes play an important role in the health of the planet because they store carbon and are home to grasses and reeds as well as fish, birds, mammals and reptiles like alligators. Though you won’t be able to easily walk through a marsh, you can expect easy (even wheelchair-friendly) and beautiful walking on elevated boardwalks in marshy areas like Everglades National Park in Florida and Congaree National Park in South Carolina, which are both crown jewels for bird watchers.

9. Congaree, South Carolina

Congaree National Park is one of the least crowded National Parks in the country, lying down in South Carolina along the Congaree River. At less than 27,000 acres, it’s relatively small but protects the largest portion of old-growth floodplain forest remaining in North America and the tallest trees in the eastern United States.

If you’re just stopping by, the 2.6-mile Boardwalk Loop Trail is the main hiking attraction, taking you on a raised wooden path through the swamp and diverse forest, but you can explore deeper into the backcountry with trails made for tree viewing and bird watching, all for free.
