Ever wondered what it’s like to be up close and personal with a cheetah, or to hear a lion’s roar echo through the night? Well, buckle up, because we’re about to embark on a wild adventure at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (aka the Wild Animal Park). This isn’t your typical zoo visit. It’s an immersive experience that transports you and your family into the heart of diverse ecosystems, where you’ll encounter some of the world’s most exotic creatures. So, let’s dive right in and explore the wild side of San Diego!

A Walk on the Wild Side: The San Diego Zoo Safari Park Experience

Planning your safari adventure, exploring the park: map and major attractions, must-see animals and exhibits, choosing the right safari for you, special exhibits: dinosaurs, birds, and butterflies, preparing for your visit, conservation efforts and educational opportunities, food and amenities, comparing san diego zoo and safari park, amenities and services, staying near san diego zoo safari park, tips and tricks for a great visit, bottom line.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, formerly known as the Wild Animal Park, offers a unique experience that sets it apart from other zoos. Nestled in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego, California, the park has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1972. Originally named the San Diego Wild Animal Park, it was a place where animals from the San Diego Zoo could live in large, open spaces.   Housing over 3,600 animals representing more than 300 species in large habitat areas, the park provides plenty of stimulation for its inhabitants, allowing them to interact with various species they might encounter in a natural environment. This 1,800-acre wildlife preserve and botanical garden offer a lot of adventure, and we’re here to guide you through it.

The park changed its name when it shifted its focus to offer more intimate animal encounters and adventure experiences that mimic going on a mini safari. You can even camp out in the middle of the savanna between the elephants and lions for Roar & Snore! Other experiences include zip-lining over animal enclosures, meeting animals up close in a safari setting, or getting a condor’s-eye view of the park from a giant balloon.

What Makes San Diego Zoo Safari Park Unique?

What sets the San Diego Zoo Safari Park apart is its commitment to conservation and its unique approach to animal exhibits. The park spans an impressive 1,800 acres, designed to mimic natural habitats, giving visitors the opportunity to see animals interact as they would in the wild. The park is also home to the world-renowned Institute for Conservation Research, where scientists conduct research to conserve species and habitats. From the African Plains to the Asian Savanna, every corner of the park offers a new adventure.

Best Time to Visit

While the park is open year-round, the best time to visit is during the cooler months, from September to May. During these months, the animals tend to be more active and the park is less crowded. However, any time is a good time to visit the park, as there are always exciting exhibits and experiences to enjoy.

Tickets and Discounts

Admission to the park includes access to all the exhibits, shows, and the Africa Tram.

As of my last visit, a one-day pass for adults (ages 12 and up) was $69, and a one-day pass for children (ages 3-11) was $59. Children 2 and under are free. Prices may vary, so I recommend checking the park’s official website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

There are also special experiences available for an additional cost, such as the Cheetah Run, Roar & Snore Safari, and Behind-the-Scenes Safari. The park offers discounts for AAA members, military personnel, and San Diego residents. Be sure to check the official website for the most up-to-date information on ticket prices and discounts.

But if you want to head straight to the gate (especially if you are doing any early early safaris, which start before the ticket windows open and you need separate park admission for those) – then you really want to have the tickets ahead of time.

E-ticket from GetYourGuide is the easiest as you just redeem them at the park turnstile.

Directions and Address

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is located at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Rd, Escondido, CA 92027. It’s easily accessible by car and there is ample parking available. If you’re using a GPS, be sure to enter the full address to get accurate directions.

Weather Considerations

San Diego has a mild climate year-round, but it can get hot in the summer months. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated. Most of the park is outdoors, so be prepared for the elements. There are a number of experiences that will get you up close and personal with the animals, and it’s best to book those in advance. You’ll save money reserving in advance rather than purchasing in the park — plus you’ll guarantee your spot. Many of these experiences have age restrictions, so keep those in mind as you search for the right experience for your family.

Understanding the Park Layout

The park is divided into different zones, each representing a different region of the world. The Africa Tram, which is included with admission, offers a guided tour around the African and Asian regions of the park, providing an overview of the different habitats and the animals that live in them.

The park is home to a diverse range of animals, from the majestic African elephants and graceful giraffes to the elusive cheetahs and playful lemurs. Don’t miss the Lion Camp, where you can come face-to-face with African lions, or the Elephant Valley, where you can watch the park’s herd of African elephants. For bird lovers, the park’s Bird House offers a chance to see a variety of exotic birds up close.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is home to a vast array of exhibits and attractions that cater to all ages and interests. From the African Plains, where you can spot rhinos, giraffes, and gazelles, to the Australian Outback, where you can meet the kangaroos and koalas , there’s something for everyone. The park also features a number of interactive exhibits, such as the Lorikeet Landing, where you can feed colorful lorikeets, and the Petting Kraal, where kids can get hands-on with gentle goats.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers a variety of safari experiences, each providing a unique perspective of the park’s wildlife. The Caravan Safari is a popular choice, allowing you to get up close and personal with giraffes, rhinos, and other African animals. In addition to its regular exhibits, the park also hosts special exhibits throughout the year. Past exhibits have included Dino Mountain, a prehistoric adventure featuring life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, and the Butterfly Jungle, a seasonal exhibit where visitors can walk among thousands of beautiful butterflies.

Whether you’re going on a safari or hopping around the park, you’ll need to dress for a workout. Wear layers you can shed as the sun warms things up in the afternoon. Hiking shoes or good walking shoes are a necessity for exploring the park, which is very spread out and hilly. Despite all of the walking, the park is very kid-friendly. There are multiple playgrounds, a lot of shady spots, fun photo opportunities for tadpoles, and limitless chances to hop, skip, jump, and climb around the park.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park isn’t just about fun and adventure. It’s also a leading center for wildlife conservation and education. The park is involved in various conservation projects worldwide, working to protect and preserve endangered species. During your visit, you can learn about these efforts through informative displays and educational talks. The park also offers a range of educational programs for kids and adults alike, including summer camps, wildlife sleepovers, and behind-the-scenes tours.

After all that adventure, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Luckily, the park offers a variety of dining options to suit all tastes. From casual cafes to sit-down restaurants, you’ll find a range of delicious meals and snacks to keep you fueled for your safari adventure. The park also has several gift shops where you can pick up souvenirs, as well as amenities such as stroller rentals and wheelchair accessible facilities.

While both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park offer amazing wildlife experiences, they each have their unique features. The Zoo, located in Balboa Park, houses a diverse range of animals in a more traditional zoo setting. The Safari Park, on the other hand, is known for its expansive free-range enclosures and safari experiences. If you’re looking for a more immersive and adventurous wildlife experience, the Safari Park is the way to go.

16 Essential Tips For Your First Visit At The San Diego Zoo

san diego zoo safari travel

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • United States

Koalas and Komodos. Camels and condors. Rhinos and reindeer. The list of animals at the San Diego Zoo is long, and for most people, it takes more than a day to see them all. From elephants to invertebrates, the zoo is home to more than 12,000 creatures spread across a 100-acre park. Miles of paved paths and roads criss-cross the zoo, wandering through areas representing habitats from tropical rainforests to the Arctic.

That’s actually part of the fun. “If you go see the tigers, you feel like you’re walking through a trail in Africa,” said Zoo Ambassador Rick Schwartz. “If you go see the polar bears, you feel like you’re in the Arctic.”

With so much to see and ground to cover, how do you make the most of your visit? We talked with Schwartz to find out the answers. Here is his advice, plus other tips and tricks to make your trip to the San Diego Zoo a roaring success.

Note: The San Diego Zoo generously hosted my visit. All opinions are my own.

1. Download The App

Before you visit the zoo, the first thing to do is download the San Diego Zoo app (found on the App Store and Google Play ) to your smartphone, Schwartz advised. That’s where you’ll find the most up-to-date information on hours, admission prices, and special events, such as wildlife care specialist talks. You can also go to the zoo website .

The app has a bonus: You can find your favorite animals (just tap on the map in the background) and save them (tap the plus sign in the upper right) to your planner (the clipboard icon at the bottom of the screen). Each animal page will also alert you to wildlife care specialist talks, if there is one. Paper maps are available just inside the admission gate.

California Condor spreading wings open wide.

2. Plan To See Your Favorite Animals

With so many exotic animals to see, it’s helpful to set priorities. Make a plan for visiting your favorite animals and new areas of the zoo, such as the immersive Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. The planner in the app can record your must-see animals and offer information about them. The app and the zoo map (found in printable PDF form ) can show you where they are located.

Check to see if there are any wildlife care specialist talks . Look out for for special talks and up-close experiences, which are available for an additional fee.

“If you don’t have a favorite, take the bus tour and see what strikes your fancy,” Schwartz recommends.

Skyfari Aerial Tram over the Treetops complex.

3. Strategize Your Route

Now that you know what animals you don’t want to miss, it’s time to strategize your route to make the most of your time and minimize tiring uphill hikes. With the animals’ locations marked on the zoo map, you can plan your day to reduce the distances and uphills you’ll walk as you go from one section of the park to another.

You can also use the map to spot stairs, the aerial tram route, the Kangaroo Bus stops, and the elevators that will be key to navigating the park. Unlimited use of these is included in the admission price.

You’ll find the elevators at the Treetops complex, the end of the Bashor Bridge, and where the Monkey Trail and Tiger Trail meet. The double-decker Kangaroo bus stops are also marked on the map. It’s not easy to spot the hills on the map, but the tram, bus, and elevators allow you to avoid most uphill treks. For more help planning a route, stop by the information booth on Front Street.

4. Wear Good Walking Shoes

Even with the aerial tram and the in-park shuttle bus, seeing the animals is still going to take some walking. “My number one tip is to wear comfortable shoes,” Schwartz said. “The biggest mistake is wearing beach sandals because you’re planning on going to the beach later.”

Sun hats hanging on a rack.

5. Use Sun Protection

“The other [big mistake] is not putting on sunscreen,” Schwartz said. San Diego’s mild weather doesn’t feel too hot, but a day in the sun will nonetheless leave you red as a lobster. Shops along Front Street, just inside the gate, sell a variety of sunhats, sunglasses, and sunscreen if you don’t bring your own.

Entrance to the San Diego Zoo.

6. Rent Some Wheels

Wheelchairs, strollers, and motorized scooters are all available on Front Street, to the left of the entrance gate. They are available on a first come, first served basis. An ADA shuttle is also available for guests with mobility challenges. More information about San Diego Zoo services can be found at the website or the information booth (to the right of the entrance, near the bus tours sign). Guided cart tours are also available for a fee.

Stroller & Wheelchair Rental Counter.

7. Lighten Your Load

You don’t have to haul your lunch, coats, luggage, and other items around with you all day. Lockers are on Front Street to the left of the entrance; if they are out of order, the stroller rental counter can store your items for a fee. Be aware that there aren’t any dog kennels, and the zoo has a strict no-dog policy. Only trained guide dogs are allowed in the park.

8. Buy Tickets In Advance

The great advantage of buying tickets in advance is that you get to skip the line and go straight into the zoo. You can buy tickets online for a single day at the zoo, multiple days, or both the zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The zoo also offers the San Diego 3-for-1 Pass, which includes the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld San Diego.

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp.

9. Save On Admission

The zoo’s San Diego 3-for-1 Pass isn’t the only pass that offers savings on admission by combining the zoo with other attractions. A few to check out: San Diego CityPASS , Go San Diego Pass, and the Go City All-Inclusive Pass . You must buy tickets at the gate and show appropriate identification to receive the veterans’ or AAA membership discount on admission. The San Diego Zoo does not offer reciprocity for members of other zoos.

10. Get There Early

Getting to the zoo as soon as it opens has several advantages: easier parking, shorter lines, and cooler temperatures. It also makes it easier to rent a wheelchair or motorized scooter. But the main reason to go early is that the animals are most active in the mornings and evenings.

11. Remember Where You Parked Your Car

It’s a big parking lot. Take note (or a photo) of the row you parked in so when you’re tired after a long day exploring, you don’t have to work too hard to remember where you left the car — especially a rental car that you’re unlikely to recognize anyway.

Polar Bear coming up from the water.

12. Take The Free Bus Tour

The free 30-minute bus tour (to the right of the entrance) is a great way to get an overall view of the park, to see what areas you might want to explore later. It’s not a hop-on-and-off bus; that’s the Kangaroo Bus, which is also free. Try to sit on the right side of the bus; the polar bears are on the left, but most other animals are on the right.

Albert's Restaurant

13. Read The Menus

The zoo has 20 venues with food and drinks — including wine and beer — though they may not all be open when you visit. Read through the menus online before you go and decide on a few lunch options, so when hunger strikes you know where to go. If you want to enjoy fine dining at Albert’s, it never hurts to make reservations.

14. Bring Your Own Lunch And Snacks

You can bring your own lunches, snacks, and drinks to the zoo. This can be especially helpful if you have allergies or special dietary needs. Lunch bags can be stored in lockers or checked at the stroller rental counter (for a fee) if you don’t want to carry them all day. Leave the large coolers at home.

15. Reserve A Special Experience

For a truly memorable day, reserve one of the up-close or behind-the-scenes experiences at the zoo. Spend the morning with cheetahs, learn more about other cats, or get a unique view of the animals at the zoo with 90-minute Inside Look tours. Reserve these special experiences in advance. The cost of tours and experiences varies.

16. Make A Day Of It

Schwartz’s final piece of advice? Bring the whole family, and take your time exploring the zoo. “It’s one of the things we can all do it together. That’s one of the great things about it,” he said. “Plan to spend a whole day to really enjoy it.”

Safari Park Zipline

A great experience well worth doing. The park does a phenomenal job pre-training you for the zipline! First they set you up with your flight gear, show you a video, explain the process while answering all your questions. Next they provide a box you put your personal property in so you won’t lose it on your flight, which protects your property and the animals below. (At the box office, they also offer a cool phone strap you may purchase for $10 so you can video your experience without fear of losing your phone. Wish I bought two of them. Best souvenir ever!!!) As a fledgling you will go on a fun test flight first before your 3/4 of a mile flight over the Safari animals. After your test flight you will travel in a Safari truck through areas of the conversation park where regular guest never see. Everyone is fun, kind, cautious, and professional. You are safe 100% of the time. While you zipline you will be sitting comfortably and your stop is similar to being on a swing. I could have done this all day! The view going down was amazing so don’t miss this!

San Diego safari Park: Take the first or last tram of the day to see the most animal In “action”

The animals are most active in first or last tram when it is cooler and animals are being fed. Seeing the animals with the sunset as a background is AMAZING!! I encourage you to spend the extra $97 and take the truck Safari where you get to ride inside the “enclosure/up close and personal tour.” It is well worth the money! Again take earliest or latest “truck” safari” for extra $97!!

Difficult to know which way to go

This was my first time visiting the safari park with my family and I downloaded the map right away. I loved that it gave updates and events that day and knew my current location. I also loved that I found filter the map by animals, attractions, food, etc. The problem I had was the map wouldn’t face the way I was going or even adjust to recently as I walked from place to place, so I often found myself taking a wrong turn and not realizing it until the blue line starting growing instead of shrinking on my directions. There were also a few times when the map said I wasn’t even on a path and I definitely was. I ended up using the paper map by the end of the day.

PRESENTED BY SAN DIEGO TOURISM

People at the beach on a sunny day in San Diego, California, USA.

  • DESTINATION GUIDE

10 experiences families shouldn’t miss in San Diego

Go beyond the beach in California’s second largest city with model trains, ghost tours, paragliding, and more.

With an average of 266 sunny days every year, 17 miles of world-class beaches, and adventures on tap year-round, San Diego is an ideal place for families to explore. Here are our top multi-generational picks in California ’s second largest city.

Splash around at the San Diego Zoo

The world-famous San Diego Zoo completely revamped its Children’s Zoo into the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp in 2022. It now features a treehouse-style activity area, kid-sized animal burrows, and a sprawling splash pad. Plenty of bathrooms and changing areas make it convenient to get wet, dry off, and keep exploring. Don’t miss the Guianan squirrel monkeys swinging and swaying next to the Tree of Dreams, or the adorable axolotls in the Cool Critters building across the bridge.

Watch sensory-friendly IMAX films

Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park provides a hands-on approach to all things STEM, presenting rotating exhibits that explore themes like light, electricity, and the universe. In Studio X, a maker space, kids can design and construct projects like a wind-powered car, marble maze, or perhaps a lunar lander. “Every time you come in, it’s a different experience,” says museum marketing manager Karla Nafarrate.

On Accessibility Mornings every third Saturday of the month, families with sensory sensitivities can enter the museum an hour earlier and attend an IMAX showing with lower sound volume and brighter ambient lighting.

Soak up Chicano culture in Barrio Logan

Lowrider enthusiasts cruise down Logan Avenue.

Chicano Park in Barrio Logan, a Mexican-American neighborhood next to downtown San Diego and 14 miles from the Mexico -U.S. border, is a vibrant monument to living history. Located under the Coronado Bridge, it holds a kaleidoscopic collection of outdoor murals, each depicting Mexican and Chicano icons like revolutionary Emiliano Zapata . Kids can work off some extra energy at the park’s large playground with lots of slides and climbing structures. Nearby on Logan Avenue, older kids might like browsing streetwear and accessories from designer Claudia Rodríguez-Biezunski at Sew Loka . Then tuck into a taco at ¡SALUD! or Fish Guts (or both).

Find the rainbow at Hillcrest Farmers Market

Jugglers, banjo players, face painters, dogs wearing cute outfits—the characters at the Hillcrest Farmers Market every Sunday may change week to week, but they always provide a colorful scene appropriate for all ages along Normal Street. Start at the giant Pride flag on the south end of the market and work your way north, stopping at some of the 175-plus vendors for local honey, custom T-shirts, flaky croissants, iced Vietnamese coffees, and countless friendly faces.

On the third Sunday in April, May, and June, the market stays open until 6 p.m. with art, music, and food stalls. “It’s not just a farmers market—there are plenty of those,” says Benjamin Nicholls, Hillcrest Business Association executive director. “It’s also a gathering space for the diversity across San Diego.”

Snorkel with sharks at La Jolla Shores

Confident swimmers can grab masks and flippers to head into the shallow waters off La Jolla Shores to observe stingrays, leopard sharks, and other marine animals. (Look, but don’t touch!) For littles not yet water safe, a beachside playground is a short distance from a convenient parking lot and bathrooms, with plenty of equipment to swing from, climb on, and dig into.

Board an aircraft carrier

Golden hour aboard the USS Midway.

Head to the bayfront to visit the USS Midway , a retired aircraft carrier docked in San Diego Bay since 2004. The self-guided tour allows visitors to explore the entire ship at their own pace, from the tight quarters below deck to the collection of aircraft parked in the hangar. Be sure to wear good walking shoes—the full tour takes two to four hours.

Track model trains at a railroad museum

Each of the intricate models on permanent exhibition at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum was painstakingly created and is maintained by a different local model train club. “Some of them are models of Southern California—real places—and some of them are fun, made-up fantasy lands,” says Patty McEvoy, the museum’s marketing and community engagement coordinator.

She’s hard-pressed to pick a favorite but says the engineering to recreate California’s famous Tehachapi Pass , in Kern County, is as impressive as the original. She recommends the Toy Train gallery, managed by the San Diego 3-Railers Club , which updates the model’s decorations for every holiday. Kids under 12 get in free, making this a budget-friendly option for families with young children and budding engineers.

Sail through the air at Torrey Pines Gliderport

A view from above of Charlie Beaudoin and a passenger flying above the waves in La Jolla.

Adventure-seeking families can jump off a cliff and ride the wind over the beach with Torrey Pines Gliderport . Get an adrenaline rush on a tandem ride with a trained professional, or take a lesson to learn the art of solo paragliding over glittering sandstone cliffs and crashing Pacific Ocean waves. The Gliderport is open seven days a week, weather permitting, and it accommodates various ages and experience levels.

Go ghostbusting in Old Town

Europeans settled in Old Town San Diego in 1769, but the Kumeyaay people lived   in the area thousands of years before that. The area, still steeped in Indigenous and early European-American history, is home to the Junipero Serra Museum ’s collection of artifacts exploring the region’s origins, a 19th-century schoolhouse, and the Whaley House , which bills itself as the most haunted house in the United States . Numerous reports detail mysterious cries in the night, ghostly footsteps down the halls, and unexplainable figures seen through windows. The 1850s redbrick residence hosts tours year-round, but is recommended for ages 13 and up.

Play in a former naval station

Once a naval hub, the 100-year-old   Liberty Station   commercial district is where you can now find a 1950s-themed diner with an attached arcade; 48 acres of grassy, waterfront park space; and artisan goods at Sea Hive Station . After touring an artist’s studio in the Arts District , stroll through Liberty Public Market to grab a bite from one of the 39 vendors serving dishes from the Philippines , Mexico, Peru , France , and beyond.

Legoland California is definitely one of the best amusement parks in San Diego. With over 60 electrifying rides, attractions, shows, and a sea life aquarium, your little one would never forgive you if you visited San Diego and didn’t bring them here.

All rides and attractions are made for children 12 and under, but if parents want to get on one or two, nobody will stop you. Grab your seats on the Bionicle Blaster and spin the wheel. The faster you and your family spin, the dizzier you get.

After, hop aboard the dragon and put your hands high in the sky as you zoom around sharp bends as fast as a rocket.

Discover what life is like underwater at the Sea Life Aquarium. Admire over 350 species while watching the staff scuba diver underwater to feed them.

When you get a bit peckish, the Ocean Journey Cafe is always open to tame your hunger.

Bash your kids on the Overdrive Bumper Cars, try not to vomit on the Beach Blaster, and scream like a little kid on the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster. Regardless of your age, Belmont Park has something that every family member will love.

Save Money Tip: Entrance to the park is free, but of course the rides and games add up quickly. If you want to stick to a budget or plan on spending a lot of time here, the All-Inclusive-Pass might be a cheaper option for you.
