The Sunshine Tour presents 12 weeks of international competition at the International Tour

sunshine tour wikipedia

This important equestrian event was presented at the Tourism Fair

With the main highlights this year being the unveiling of the largest removable indoor arena in the world, at 90 by 62 meters and, an extra two weeks of competition this January

The ‘Andalucía’ Sunshine Tour, is the equestrian competition based at Dehesa de Montenmedio, located in Vejer de la Frontera.  Today the Sunshine Tour presented this year’s calendar of events at the Madrid International Tourism Fair, FITUR, 2022.  This year’s season will be made up of 12 weeks of important international competition and, this year, the much anticipated, removable covered arena, will be inaugurated.  The new arena further adds to the expansive facilities at the Sunshine Tour and will be used to hold world class jumping events alongside more than 20 other arenas of both geotextile or grass, here at the largest equestrian installations in Europe.

This important equestrian event was presented at the Tourism Fair by the director of the Andalucía Sunshine Tour, Teresa Blázquez; the vice president and councillor for Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Marín; the Cádiz Tourism delegate, María Jesús Herencia and the president of the Spanish Equestrian Federation, Javier Revuelta.  The top level of competition taking place at the Sunshine Tour was highlighted,  including the facts that there will be 42 FEI Longines Ranking events and also qualifier events for the Junior European Championships.

During the Sunshine Tour which runs from February 8th to March 27th, more than 700 riders and 2,500 horses, from 50 different countries, will compete at Dehesa Montemedio.  Overall the show will give out more than two million euros in prize money.  In addition to the Tour itself the facilities will host a two week ‘warm up competition’ just beforehand, from January 20th to the 30th, and these preliminary weeks also include four FEI Longines Ranking classes.  There will also be  2* championship classes and Young Horse events.

This event has been dubbed the ‘Andalucía Pre Sunshine Tour’ and this year there will be around 100 riders participating, from 25 countries, with about 300 horses.  Many famous names will be competing here, including Martin Fuchs from Switzerland who is currently ranked number two in the world;  Swedish rider, Douglas Lindelow;  the American rider, Paris Sellon; the Israeli rider, Dani G. Waldman and the Egyptian rider, Karim El Zoghby.

In addition to all of the above, in October, due to a very successful organisation last year, Montenmedio will once again be the venue for the Spanish Jumping Championships, the categories will be, Absolute, Young Riders, Classic and Young Horses.

As FITUR is a Tourist Fair, the enormous attraction of the Sunshine Tour to tourists was highlighted in the presentation.  8,900 people are accredited for the event and the Tour creates both directly and indirectly 1,200 jobs.  The estimation is that 20,000 overnight stays in hotels are created by the Tour and the average daily spend per person is 256 euros.  This generates 40 million euros in economic impact for the region of La Janda.

The director of the Sunshine Tour, Teresa Blázquez, noted that;  "the Sunshine Tour is a consolidated and long-anticipated event for the world of international equestrian sport.   Thanks to the privileged location of Dehesa Montenmedio, competition can go ahead outdoors in the open air, when in the rest of Europe at this time of year,  this is impossible.  In addition to this it has much to offer the tourist with matchless gastronomical, and cultural experiences”.

For his part, the Vice President of the Junta de Andalucía and Minister of Tourism, Juan Marín, noted that;  “we have signed a three-year sponsorship with the Andalucía Sunshine Tour, so that it forms part of the ‘Andalucía branding’ and continues to be a unique product,  and a benchmark in the world of international equestrian sport.  It is also much more than a sporting event, it is a great social event”.

The new covered arena, which involved an investment of 750,000 euros, will be inaugurated in February and expands and complements the already extensive sports facilities on offer at the Dehesa Montenmedio.  The new covered area will allow competitions to be held comfortably and safely when the weather conditions are unfavourable and will be both versatile and functional thanks to its removable nature.

The arena is 90 meters long by 62 meters in width, giving a clear span area of 5,850 meters squared.  It is made up of a two-layered cover that is a PVC-coated polyester textile membrane melded to high-frequency Keder.  The two layers form an air chamber that provides great thermal insulation and better wind resistance.

Van Tonder, who registered a maiden DP World Tour title earlier this year at the Kenya Savannah Classic, posted a final-round 65 at Gary Player Country Club to snatch a one-shot win.

The world No 151, without a worldwide top 10 since April going into the week, mixed eight birdies with a lone bogey on the final day to finish on 16 under and a shot ahead of Oliver Bekker.

Van Tonder rolled in a 10-footer at the first and bounced back from a bogey at the fourth to post three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the fifth and a chip-in from off the 10th green.

The 30-year-old picked up another shot at the 11th and fired his tee shot at the par-three 16th to inside six feet to add another birdie, as Bekker birdied his final three holes to sign for a final-round 66 and move alongside Van Tonder on 15 under.

A play-off looked a possibility when Van Tonder - needing a birdie at the par-five last for victory - left himself some 20 feet from the flag with his third shot, only for him to rattle in his putt to take home the trophy.

Henni du Plessis birdied his last three holes to finish four strokes back in third spot, with Dean Burmester jumping into fourth after back-to-back 66s and Christiaan Bezuidenhout ending his title defence in tied-sixth.

What next for DP World Tour?

Events removed due to Covid-19

The event was originally scheduled to be the second of three consecutive co-sanctioned events between the Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour, only for the tournament to be altered after the discovery of the Omicron Covid-19 variant in the region.

The historic tournament was stripped of its DP World Tour status and offered a significantly reduced prize purse due to the travel ban on the region, resulting in mass withdrawals of non-South African players, with next week's Alfred Dunhill Championship cancelled because of coronavirus.

Five things to know: Robin Tiger Williams

While it is his famous middle name that immediately creates curiosity, Robin Tiger Williams is making encouraging strides in his professional career and produced his best performance on the global stage as he narrowly missed out on his maiden DP World Tour title at the SDC Championship .

Robin Williams-1989686436

The 22-year-old South African-born golfer lost out to American Jordan Gumberg in a play-off at St. Francis Links on Sunday, in what was the first of two back-to-back co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Tour on the International Swing.

Here are five things to know about Williams, who has a fascinating backstory and is already giving back to the game in his homeland.

The story behind the middle name

Williams has the same middle name as one of golf's greatest players, but the story goes that he was almost named after another sporting great. His father was a talented cricket player and suggested Sachin after Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. But once that idea was dismissed, the family agreed on Tiger. With Williams born the year the 'Tiger Slam' was realised, perhaps the decision was made. Speaking after taking the lead earlier this season at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, he told the DP World Tour: "I've been asked that question a lot throughout my junior, amateur and now professional career, but for me it is just an honour to be named after that man. Big fan, how can I not be? He's probably the reason why I'm standing here and he has opened the doors for millions of guys out there. You could probably ask all these guys that's playing now, probably the reason why they are playing here today is because of him."

Born in South Africa, but raised in the UK

Born in Stellenbosch to South African parents, the Williams family emigrated to Prestatyn, Wales when their son Robin was not even a month old. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph in 2017, Robin explained how he first picked up a club at the age of 18 months and was soon "bitten by the golfing bug". By the age of eight, he was a member at Hazlehead Golf Club in Aberdeen, Scotland, where the family had since moved to. At the age of 10, Williams joined Peterborough Milton Golf Club, the club he remains attached to. Soon after, he was taken to America by his father, Morne, a dentist, in a bid to help his progression as a junior golfer.

Successful amateur career

Williams went on to win multiple America Junior Golf Association titles, while a pupil at Hampton College in Peterborough, England. One of those was the Future Champions Golf World Championship, becoming the first 11-year-old to do so. After later being granted a scholarship at Bishops Gate Golf Academy in Florida, the teenager continued to rack up junior victories stateside as he represented England on the junior and amateur circuits. By the age of 16, he was the top-ranked junior in Europe and made his appearance in a professional event in the British Masters as an invite at Close House in 2017. Speaking then after missing the cut, carding rounds of one-over-par 71 and three over 73, he said: "It was such a fun experience, soak in all the atmosphere and everything, because one day I would like to be on Tour but it was so so fun." A year later, Williams would represent Europe at the Junior Ryder Cup, playing in the same team as the Højgaard twins. He won two points from his three matches at Golf Disneyland in France as the hosts lost to the United States by one point. But for Williams, the highlight of the whole event was meeting his hero Tiger Woods later on at Le Golf National. "You are from Europe, but you hope I go 5 and 0, right?" Tiger joked at the time as he met with players from both sides.

A winner already on the Sunshine Tour

Williams claimed the biggest title of his professional career to date at the Fortress Invitational at Glendower, host venue of next week's Jonsson Workwear Open, in October last year during his rookie season on the Sunshine Tour. Less than two months later, he was thrust into the spotlight when he held the clubhouse lead after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek. “I can always say I shot 65 at Leopard Creek. I’ll always have that,” he said. "This is all a learning curve for me in terms of trying to see what my game needs in order to compete at this level. It’s about learning to handle my emotions and not just my game in these big events.” Since then, he finished in a tie for third at February's Dimension Data Pro-Am, an event co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and European Challenge Tour. But now, following his title challenge at the SDC Championship, he has hopes of becoming a winner on the DP World Tour and the wider recognition that would come with it.

Helping aspiring golfers in South Africa

Williams is doing his best to support the goals of non-white golfers in South Africa who are struggling to meet the costs of travelling to tournaments, accommodation and other costs that come with playing the sport. After winning his Sunshine Tour card through Qualifying School last year, he and his father came up with a plan with the help of a sponsor to help fund several players after hearing the stories of hardship some were facing in their quest to make it on tour.

A Brief History of the Sunshine Tour

The Sunshine Tour was founded in 1971. For much of its existence it was actually known as the South African Tour or the FNB Tour. In the 2000-01 season the tour was rebranded to The Sunshine Tour, this to increase the tour’s overall appeal. The Tour has been open to all races since 1991 long before other events were open to all South Africans. Since then, five black golfers have won events.

The tour is one of the biggest leading men’s tours which together with other tours make up the International Federation of PGA Tours. These are the Asian Tour, The European PGA Tour, The Japan Golf Tour and The PGA Tour of Australia. This same federation founded the World Golf Championships back in 1999. They also sanctioned the Official World Golf Rankings.

This tour’s leading official money events like the South African Open are co-sanctioned with the European Tour in an attempt to attract stronger fields. These are The Alfred Dunhill Championship and the South African Open. The Alfred Dunhill Championship is one of the oldest championships in golfing history.  On top of that the tour also sanctions The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open with the Asian Tour and the European Tour. In 2015 there were 27 official money events. The Co-sanction events had prizes ranging from One million euros to 6.5 Million Dollar. The other events were based in South African Rand with prizes ranging from R650, 000 to R4.5 million. This tour has at least one event per month with the expectation of July. The main events take place in the South African summer months of November, December, January and February.

In 2016 the Tour came with the news of affiliation with the MENA Golf Tour allowing the top five players of this MENA Tour, Sunshine Tour cards. Of these the 6th-15th is allowed into the final stage of Q School. From then the Sunshine Tour, MENA Tour and developmental Big Easy Tour also co-sanctioned some events.

The sunshine tour is made up of two parts, the common referred to “Summer Swing” and the “Winter Swing”. The summer tours are where the big money events are held and the stronger fields come to play. The Winter Swing starts in March and runs through to November.
