About Lynyrd Skynyrd:

As Lynyrd Skynyrd approaches the 50 th anniversary of the band’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd’ in 2023, they resonate as deeply with their multi-generational fan base today as when they first emerged out of Jacksonville, Florida in 1973. Few ensembles have had the deep impact in creating a lifestyle as Skynyrd has. The band travels forward with a primary mission of celebrating a legacy that honors all whom have had a resonating contribution to the lives of hundreds of millions of fans globally. Former members Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Ed King, Billy Powell, Bob Burns, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson alongside others will forever remain significant contributors to this indelible repertoire and the band’s colorful history. Today, Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with a current line-up featuring Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Keith Christopher, Peter Keys, Carol Chase and Stacy Michelle. Gary Rossington continues to have a significant presence and creative influence with the band, while making select appearances on the road.

The rock and roll powerhouse continually tours, and as Van Zant shares, “It’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about. There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.”  Adds Rossington, “We’re still standing, Still keeping the music going. We wanted to do the guys who aren’t with us any more proud, and keep the name proud, too.”

With a catalog of over 60 albums, billions of streams, and tens of millions of records sold,  Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remain a cultural icon that appeal to all generations.

About ZZ Top:

“That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” has been at it for well over a half century delivering rock, blues and boogie on stage and studio to millions of devoted fans. With iconography as distinctive as their sound, ZZ TOP is globally recognized with their beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars and that magic keychain, all of which transcend geography and language.

It was in 1969 Houston when ZZ TOP coalesced from the core of two rival bands, Billy Gibbons’ Moving Sidewalks and Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s American Blues. ZZ Top’s 1973 release, Tres Hombres , catapulted them to national attention with the hit “La Grange,” still one of the band’s signature pieces today.  Eliminator , their 1983 album was something of a paradigm shift for ZZ TOP. Their roots blues skew was intact and added to the mix came their hightech-age trappings that soon found a visual outlet with such tracks as “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” on the nascent MTV. It was one of the record industry’s first albums to have been certified Diamond, far beyond Gold and Platinum, a reflection of sales exceeding 10 million units.

As a touring outfit, they’ve been without peer over the past five decades, having performed before millions of fans over four continents and have been the subject of their own Grammy-nominated documentary titled That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.   The band’s line-up of the bearded Gibbons and Hill and Beard, who ironically is clean shaven, remained intact for more than 50 years.  When Dusty temporarily departed the tour in the summer of 2021, Elwood Francis entered the picture accepting the directive from Dusty to be the perfect choice to stand in on the bass-guitar and now handles the low-end duties for the band for the present as well as into the future.

The elements that keep ZZ TOP fresh, enduring can be summed up in the three words of the band’s internal mantra: “Tone, Taste and Tenacity”. As genuine roots performers, they have few peers. Their influences are both the originators of the form – Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, et al – as well as the British blues rockers and Jimi Hendrix who emerged generations before ZZ’s ascendance.

They have sold hundreds of millions of records over the course of their career, have been officially designated as Heroes of The State of Texas, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (by Keith Richards, no less) and have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms. They are true rock icons and, against all odds, they’re really just doing what they’ve always done. ZZ TOP abides!

Before the headliners take the stage, audiences will be treated to a performance from Uncle Kracker.

If you’re jonesing for some Uncle Kracker or just want to hear what he sounds like these days, check out his 2022 single “Smile” featuring Positive Vibrations.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top set list

As for ZZ Top, expect all the classics you know and love— “Tush,” “Legs, “La Grange”— and some surprising covers from Billy Gibbons and co. too.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top have announced a 2023 North American co-headlining tour.

“The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour” kicks off on July 21st in West Palm Beach, Florida, and runs through September 17th in Camden, New Jersey. Uncle Kracker will provide support.

Artist pre-sales go live on Tuesday (December 13th) at 10 a.m. local time, while a Live Nation pre-sale begins Thursday (December 15th) using the code CHEER . General sales begin Friday (December 16th) at 10 a.m. local time. You can pick up tickets via Ticketmaster .

The tour will mark 50 years since Lynyrd Skynyrd dropped their legendary 1973 debut album (pronounced ‘lĕh-‘nérd ‘skin-‘nérd) , which features iconic songs such as “Gimme Three Steps,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” and the guitar powerhouse “Free Bird.”

“It’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about,” said Skynyrd’s Johnny Van Zant via a press statement. “There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.”

Added founding guitarist Gary Rossington, who still makes select live appearances with the band: “We’re still standing, Still keeping the music going. We wanted to do the guys who aren’t with us any more proud, and keep the name proud, too.”

Meanwhile, ZZ Top continue to forge on following the passing of late bassist Dusty Hill in 2021. Elwood Francis has assumed bass duties alongside singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard. Consequence caught the band’s October show in Port Chester, New York, where they sounded as sharp as ever .

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Kick Off 2024 Tour with Powerful Setlist

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Kick Off 2024 Tour with Powerful Setlist | Society Of Rock Videos

via AIE TUBE / YouTube

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top recently launched the second leg of their highly anticipated co-headlining Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour. The tour took off in style at Savannah, Georgia’s Enmarket Arena, where both bands delivered exhilarating performances. Fans were treated to an impressive lineup of classic hits, and the energy in the arena was electric.

Rocking Through the Skynyrd Legacy

Lynyrd Skynyrd, known for their Southern rock sound, showcased a 15-song set that took fans on a journey through their iconic albums, including (Pronounced ‘Leh-‘nerd ‘Skin-‘nerd), Second Helping, and Street Survivors. The band wasted no time, opening their set with the rousing “Workin’ for MCA” and “Skynyrd Nation.” They then proceeded to thrill the crowd with beloved hits such as “What’s Your Name,” “That Smell,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” and “Simple Man.” The performance reached its climax with the immortal one-two punch of “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.”

According to the band, their setlist is a tribute to their legacy and the songs that have resonated with their fans throughout the years. Lead guitarist Rickey Medlocke spoke about their emotional connection to the music, saying, “We do a tribute every night to Gary, to the song ‘Tuesday’s Gone,’ and I can’t even look at the video.” This heartfelt homage serves as a reminder of the late guitarist Gary Rossington’s impact on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music.

ZZ Top’s Unforgettable Performance

ZZ Top, the blues-infused rock icons, delivered a powerhouse performance of their own. Their 16-song setlist showcased their trademark hits from the albums Eliminator and Tres Hombres, igniting nostalgia among their fans. The crowd couldn’t help but groove to the infectious beats of “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Got Me Under Pressure,” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” Classic tracks like “Jesus Just Left Chicago” and “Waitin’ for the Bus” transported the audience to the heyday of ZZ Top’s career. The set concluded with a thrilling rendition of their renowned hit “La Grange.”

In addition to their own hits, ZZ Top included a few surprises in their setlist. They delighted the crowd with covers of Sam & Dave’s “I Thank You” and Merle Travis’ “Sixteen Tons.” These unexpected choices showcased the band’s versatility and ability to put their unique spin on beloved classics.

The co-headlining tour, titled the Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour, commenced last July, with this leg consisting of 36 shows spanning from Savannah to Ridgefield, Washington in September. Both Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top have faced significant hardships in recent years. ZZ Top mourned the loss of their bassist and vocalist Dusty Hill in 2021, with the band’s longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis stepping in to carry on the legacy. Meanwhile, Lynyrd Skynyrd bid farewell to their last original member, guitarist Gary Rossington, in 2023. Despite these challenges, both bands have persevered and continue to captivate audiences with their unwavering dedication to their music.

Looking ahead, fans can anticipate an “all-star Skynyrd record” featuring Rossington, as teased by guitarist Rickey Medlocke. The album aims to pay homage to the band’s legacy while embracing new opportunities. With the tour in full swing and the promise of exciting future projects, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top are ensuring that their music lives on and continues to resonate with generations of fans.

Live Review: ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd @ Merriweather Post Pavilion — 9/2/23

The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour Featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland Sept. 2, 2023

A clear blue sky and warm sunshine were over head at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia Maryland, and southern rock royalty, Lynyrd Skynyrd were in town to continue the Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour with Texas blues trio ZZ Top.

Uncle Kracker started the evening with a friendly, easy going seven song set. Songs like “Nobody’s Sad on a Saturday Night” and a cover of Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” got the crowd in the mood to party and listen to music. These songs were followed by his biggest solo hit “Follow Me.”

With “When the Sun Goes Down” by Kenny Chesney, Uncle Kracker let everyone in the audience know it is “Good to Be Me” and to “Smile.” He closed his set with a cover of “Drift Away” by Dobie Gray and then he graciously thanked the fans and the stage crew as he left the stage.

Following the opening set by Uncle Kracker and his band, the Lynyrd Skynyrd band hit the stage to loud cheers and whistles from the crowd.

Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964 as My Backyard, the band changed their name to the more familiar Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969 and released their first album in 1973. The band released five studio albums and one live album before tragically losing their guiding force and frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, in a plane crash in 1977. Along with Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and back up singer Cassie Gaines as well as their assistant road manager and the two pilots lost their lives that horrible day. The rest of the band were terribly injured, and it didn’t look like the band could continue afterwards.

But the band reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour with Ronnie’s brother Johnny handling the lead vocals. The band toured with the surviving members as a tribute to those they lost.

Over the years, the surviving original members began to pass away. This tour is Skynyrd’s first full tour since original guitarist and last surviving original member Gary Rossington died in March of this year.

Currently, the band consists of Johnnie Van Zant on lead vocals, Ricky Medlocke (at one time an early member of Skynyrd and the band Blackfoot) along with Damon Johnson (Brother Cane, Dark Star Riders), and Mark Matejka on guitars. The rhythm section is made up of drummer Michael Cartellone (Damn Yankees) and bassist Keith Christopher. Peter Keys handles keyboards and backing vocals are provided by the Honkettes.

Over the course of the evening, the band showcased nearly all the big hits from their heyday that their fans love and expect to hear, during the 14-song set.

The band played rockers like “What’s Your Name” and the cautionary “That Smell” to a slower tempo mid section consisting of “The Ballad of Curtis Loew,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” and “Simple Man” before finishing with the uptempo songs “Gimme Three Steps,” JJ Cale’s “Call Me The Breeze,” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Holding his flag draped microphone stand, Johnny graciously thanked all the fans for coming out to the show.

Of course, the band couldn’t leave the venue without playing their signature classic, “Free Bird,” and they duly gave the fans what they came to hear.

Watch Lynyrd Skynyrd perform “Free Bird” live in 1977 via YouTube:

A large mirrored ball hung from the ceiling, reflecting beams of light, as Skynyrd tore through the rousing number until its breathless climax and the crowd stood and cheered wildly.

Although none of the original members are still with us, the Free Bird still flies high.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Merriweather - 9-2-2023-001

That lil’ ol’ trio from Texas, ZZ Top, followed up the southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd, with some tasty, southern fried blues. Vocalist and guitarist Billy Gibbons started their 16-song set with “Got Me Under Pressure” from their monster early ’80s Eliminator album and didn’t hold back.

The blue based jams of “I Thank You,” “Waitin’ for the Bus,” and “Jesus Just Left Chicago” shared space with the guitar synth based “Gimme All Your Lovin’” and the tongue in cheek “Pearl Necklace,” a tale of a lovely girl with simple tastes.

Billy sang the boastful “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” and let the raucous Saturday night audience know who was large and in charge. Then the Reverend Willie G and his mighty six string told the crowd “I Gotsta Get Paid” and “My Head’s in Mississippi,” and no one doubted him in the least.

A cover of the old school classic “Sixteen Tons” followed and then the power duo of “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” brought the curtain down.

After leaving the stage to change into sparkly red jackets, Billy and bassist Elwood Francis returned to the stage, along with their one and only rhythmic and powerful drummer, Frank Beard, for the night’s encore.

First up was an old gem from the one that started it all, ZZ Top’s First Album; the tasty “Brown Sugar” (not to be confused with the Stones song of the same name) and the Reverend gave the six strings of his beat up looking guitar a real dirty work out.

The band followed that classic with an even dirtier one, the good ol’ “Tube Snake Boogie.” Boogie-woogie baby, all night long.

Finally, it was time for everyone to visit that home full of nice girls out on the range, in “La Grange.” A how-how-how, indeed!

Watch ZZ Top perform “La Grange” live from Gruene Hall via YouTube:

Billy, Frank and Elwood never fail to get the adoring crowd boogieing in the aisles, so here’s to them and another 50 years of the dirty and delicious Texas blues!

ZZ Top tour touches on all 50 years of the band’s history

  • By Alan Sculley
  • Mar 23, 2024

EDITOR’S NOTE:  ZZ Top will perform with Lynyrd Skynyrd at The Landers Center on March 23 at 7 p.m.

ZZ Top’s “Raw” is as close to being an accidental album as it gets.

The album, which was released in July 2022, is drawn from a session at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas in which singer/guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard set up and played versions of such familiar songs as “La Grange,” “Tush,” “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’” and “Legs” in the most live, spontaneous and basic setting possible.

The performances were filmed for use in the recent ZZ Top documentary celebrating the band’s 50-year history with its original lineup, “That Little Ol’ Band from Texas.” When the trio unplugged and left Gruene Hall that day, they thought it was mission accomplished. The footage was shot and recorded, end of story.

“The tunes on that occasion unfolded quite in the moment,” Gibbons said, recalling the session in an e-mail interview. “Our director, Sam (Dunn), wanted a sequence where we played in the present day as a balance to the film’s historical narrative. We got in there and did what we did and later, much later, realized we had an album.”

As Gibbons indicated, upon further review, the performances captured something that was worth hearing in its entirety – the unmistakable Texas blues-rock boogie of ZZ Top in its most authentic state. And the “Raw” album became a reality.

The album figures to take on some significance as one of the last live documents of ZZ Top with Hill, who passed away in July 2021. Long-time guitar tech Elwood Francis had stepped in on bass on occasions when Hill had injuries or health issues that prevented him from touring. When Hill died, the band barely took time off before resuming the tour, knowing that’s what Hill would have wanted.

Nevertheless, Hill’s death came as a shock.

“It was quite sudden and we remained under the assumption he’d rally, recover and rejoin us,” Gibbons said. “There was no anticipation mental or otherwise. We just had to deal with the reality of departure and the quick turnaround helped reinforce “the show must go on” ethos. Our crew, our friends, fans and followers have been a huge source of comfort.”

Now ZZ Top, with Francis considered a long-term third member, are back on tour, doing a summer co-headlining run with Lynyrd Skynyrd, playing a show that touches on all 50-plus years of the band’s history.

“We know we’ll go as far back as possible… perhaps ‘Brown Sugar’ or ‘Just Got Back From Baby’s’ from the cleverly titled ‘ZZ Top’s First Album’ or even Willie Brown’s ‘Future Blues’ that predates us by 40 plus years,” Gibbons said. “Of course, (we’ll include) a few of the ones well known like ‘La Grange’ and ‘Legs.’ What’s certain is the famed adage of ‘something old, something borrowed and most definitely something blue’ (will apply).”

ZZ Top’s longevity is notable enough, but the fact that the classic lineup remained intact for 50-plus years makes ZZ Top a rare example of stability and sustained creativity and quality in what is often a volatile reality of being a rock band.

The sound and personal chemistry is something Gibbons, Hill and Beard experienced literally from the first notes they played together.

“Funny thing, our first, I’ll call it a jam session together, Dusty was in line to pick up the bass guitar and throw his hat into the ring. And what was going to start up as a three-minute shuffle in C turned out to be a three-hour jam session,” Gibbons recalled. “We knew something was cooking.”

That initial jam session is recalled quite colorfully in “That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” during which Gibbons, Hill and Beard take viewers along for a trip through ZZ Top’s 50-year history. The film hits a lot of highlights, including how Gibbons, who had come up on the vibrant Houston music scene and had a measure of success in the band Moving Sidewalks, came to know Beard, who then connected him with Hill (both from Dallas) to form ZZ Top, how the group got its distinctive high-powered sound and their initial commercial breakthrough. From there, the film visits a late ‘70s period that included a hiatus and Beard’s battle with addictions and moves onto the 1980s, when ZZ Top incorporated synthesizers and sequencers into their sound and hit a commercial grand slam with the 1983 album, “Eliminator,” before reaching into the present day.

In ZZ Top’s early years, a good deal of mystique grew around the band, in part because the band’s manager, Bill Ham, limited the number of interviews and television appearances the band did.

There were those who didn’t quite know what to make of the band’s blues-rooted, Texas-infused style of rock, either. That’s a key reason why the band decided to bring a bit of the Lone Star State to the rest of the country in the mid-1970s on the “Worldwide Texas” tour. The famous outing had the band joined on stage by live animals, including a buffalo, a steer and a buzzard, the latter of which hung out near Beard’s drum set.

“The only time it got sticky was when the buffalo made his escape,” Gibbons recalled. “One afternoon we were, actually we played Three Rivers Stadium (in Pittsburgh), and I’ll never forget seeing the trainer in a golf cart trying to catch up to the buffalo stampeding and zig zagging across third base to home plate.”

ZZ Top stayed popular into the early 1980s, when a convergence of factors – the arrival of sequencers and other recording tools, the debut of MTV (which aired the groundbreaking videos for the hit songs “Legs,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’” and “Sharp Dressed Man”) and some inspired songwriting – made ZZ Top mega-platinum superstars (with Gibbons and Hill debuting their newly grown outsized beards).

The makeover in the ZZ Top sound wasn’t planned. Upon arriving at Ardent Studios in Memphis to record “Eliminator,” the trio for the first time encountered sequencers and synthesizers and soon figured out how to use them to modernize their bluesy sound.

“We stumbled into the control room, and here were these new contraptions,” Gibbons said. “We had a habit of ignoring the user’s manual. We just started twisting knobs and somehow that’s what worked.”

Indeed, after reaching their commercial peak with “Eliminator” and the sonically similar “Afterburner” (1985) and “Recycler” (1990), ZZ Top have returned to more of a stripped back bluesy guitar sound on their most recent albums -- “La Futura” (2012), “Mescalero” (2003)” and “XXX” (1999). Sales of those albums have fallen off, but ZZ Top remains a touring powerhouse.

And Francis is making his presence felt in the live shows.

“Elwood's instrumental presentation is solid. The Elwood sound has it down,” Gibbons said. “Vocally, of course, it’s surprisingly different. Elwood is great with harmonies and back up stuff so we’ll just leave it at that.”

And with Francis aboard, Gibbons considers ZZ Top a band that still has plenty to say musically. Speaking of which, before Hill died, the trio had been in the studio working on some songs Gibbons had brought in from sessions for his 2021 solo album, “Hardware,” as well as other material with the thought it might develop into a ZZ Top album of new material.

“Elwood is certainly in with us for the long haul,” Gibbons said. “It’s still ZZ Top, not ZZ Top 2 or ZZ Top with an asterisk. The genuine article abides!”

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Launch 2024 Tour: Set List, Video

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top kicked off the second leg of their co-headlining Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour on Friday at Savannah, Georgia's Enmarket Arena.

You can see set lists and videos from both bands below, as well as fan-shot video from their Saturday night concert in Estero, Florida.

Lynyrd Skynyrd delivered a 15-song set, which focused heavily on  (Pronounced 'Leh-'nerd 'Skin-'nerd) ,   Second Helping and  Street Survivors . The band came out swinging with "Workin' for MCA" and "Skynyrd Nation," then cycled through hits such as "What's Your Name," "That Smell," "Tuesday's Gone," "Simple Man" and "Gimme Three Steps." They ended their set with the immortal one-two punch of "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird."

ZZ Top served a similarly power-packed, 16-song set that featured  Eliminator smashes "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Got Me Under Pressure," "Legs" and "Sharp Dressed Man" as well as  Tres Hombres classics "Jesus Just Left Chicago," "Waitin' for the Bus" and the set-closing "La Grange." Minor hits and fan favorites such as "Pearl Necklace" and "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide," plus a pair of covers — Sam & Dave's "I Thank You" and Merle Travis' "Sixteen Tons" —  rounded out the set.

The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour Rolls On

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top embarked on the first leg of the Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour last July. The current leg comprises 36 shows and will keep both bands on the road through September, wrapping on Sept. 22 in Ridgefield, Washington.

Both groups have soldiered on in the face of tragedy in recent years. ZZ Top bassist and vocalist Dusty Hill died in 2021 and was succeeded by the band's longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis. Skynyrd, meanwhile, said goodbye to their last original member, guitarist Gary Rossington , in 2023.

Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke recently told UCR that the band is plotting an "all-star Skynyrd record" featuring Rossington. He also admitted his bandmate's death is "still a very raw spot in my heart. ... We do a tribute every night to Gary, to the song ' Tuesday's Gone ,' and I can't even look at the video."

Lynyrd skynyrd.

Lynyrd Skynyrd resonates as profoundly with fans in 2024 as they did when they emerged 51 years ago from Jacksonville, Florida, in 1973. Celebrating a legacy that honors past members and contributors, the current lineup includes Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, and others, with Gary Rossington maintaining a significant presence and creative influence. With over 60 albums, billions of streams, and tens of millions of records sold, Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon, continually touring and connecting with fans across generations.

In their enduring journey as the "Little Ol’ Band From Texas," ZZ Top continues to deliver rock, blues, and boogie into 2024. Formed in 1969, the band's distinctive sound and iconic imagery, including beards, hotrod cars, and spinning guitars, transcend time and place. Tres Hombres , their 1973 release, propelled them to national attention, while Eliminator in 1983 marked a paradigm shift. With a lineup featuring Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard, ZZ Top toured relentlessly for over 50 years. Despite Dusty's temporary departure in 2021, Elwood Francis joined, exemplifying the band's tenacity. ZZ Top's enduring influence, Grammy-nominated documentary, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and sales exceeding 10 million units showcase their status as true rock icons, abiding against all odds.
