With its grandiose architecture and vibrant culture, Havana  continues to be the number one place to visit for travelers to Cuba . But taking a break from the city buzz will recharge your batteries and give you a broader scope of Cuba’s authentic experiences.

Let the sea breeze pamper your senses in Playas del Este or indulge your ecological side in Las Terrazas and Soroa. With so many great options less than an hour away, Havana is the perfect base for a day trip filled with adventure.

Your travel options from the capital will vary depending on whether they're private or state-run. For the Havana Bus Tour (to Playas del Este) and Viazul buses (to Viñales, Matanzas and Varadero), you’ll have to pay using a non-US-based credit card.

Private taxis usually prefer foreign cash (euros are best) and it's best to agree on the currency and price before you start your journey.

Start planning your next Cuban vacation now with six of our favorite day trips from Havana.

A classic car passes a man on horse in Viñales, Cuba

1. Explore the beautiful landscapes of Viñales

Travel time: 2 hours 45 minutes

Viñales Valley , peppered with rare pin-cushion hills, is spectacular enough to warrant a longer stay if you have the time.

The town is quaint in that ceramic-roof, cane-rocker-on-the-porch kind of way, and the hospitality of Cuban guajiros (countryfolk) is unsurpassed. Accept any invite to go horseback riding or hiking amid the oddly bulbous limestone mogotes (hills).

Viñales becomes a haven for rock climbers from December through April. The A-frame structures covered in shaggy fronds you will see are drying houses for the world’s finest cigar tobacco, grown throughout this part of Pinar del Río Province.

Los Jazmines is the perfect lookout point for some world-prize-worthy panoramic photos over Viñales Valley, but choose  Balcón del Valle restaurant if you fancy having lunch while overlooking the mogotes. For a friendly ambiance and freshly made cocktails, don’t miss  Tres Jotas  on Salvador Cisneros St, Viñales’ main road.

How to get to Viñales from Havana: Viñales is connected with Havana by daily Viazul buses. You can also book day trips at Havana’s hotels, most of which include lunch and added excursions, for the equivalent of around US$70 round trip. For more flexibility, rent a car or hire a taxi with a driver for the day.

2. Unwind at Playas del Este

Travel time: 30 minutes

Not far from the hustle and grit of Havana’s city center is the palm-fringed coast known as Playas del Este (eastern beaches). Half a dozen beaches are out this way, but Santa María del Mar – with appreciable shade and the softest, cleanest sand – is the best.

Head to the beach town of Guanabo to hang with locals. The stretch near Boca Ciega is a traditional LGBTIQ+ hangout. Most Cubans will not go near the beach in the “cold” winter months between January and April, but during the peak summer season , these beaches get incredibly crowded.

Guanabo has an assortment of paladares (Cuban private diners) ranging from Italian-inspired pizzerias to kid-friendly chicken restaurants.

How to get to Playas del Este from Havana: Hop on the T3 Habana Bus Tour , which runs from Centro Habana to Playas del Este (via Parque Histórico Militar Morro-Cabaña ). The main stop is in Parque Central opposite the Hotel Inglaterra . All-day tickets for T3 cost the equivalent of US$10 and services run from 9am to 7pm. A regular private cab costs the equivalent of around US$25 one way.

3. Embrace nature at Las Terrazas and Soroa

Travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes

A drive into the heart of the undulating and verdant Sierra del Rosario range, Cuba’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a sure tonic for fatigue and worry. Las Terrazas, just over an hour west of Havana, is a former artist colony turned ecotourism experiment with open studios, canopy, hiking, birdwatching and swimming in river cascades.

Nearby Soroa is famed for its  Orquideario ,  an orchid garden and research station with more than 700 species that bloom between December and March.

Off-the-radar Lago El Palmar hosts a  ranchón  (rustic, opened-sided restaurant) offering drinks and snacks, plus an option for renting boats. Less than 2km (1 mile) away is  Cafetal Buenavista , a well-preserved remnant of Cuba’s oldest coffee plantation.

How to get to Las Terrazas and Soroa from Havana: Book a day tour to Las Terrazas and Soroa at a Cubatur desk in any hotel lobby or take a colectivo (shared taxi mainly used by tourists) at the Viazul station and hop off at Rancho Curujey , near Las Terrazas. Make sure to confirm your stop with the driver.

4. Swim in the crystal-clear waters of Varadero

Travel time: 2 hours 20 minutes

Cuba’s finest beach destination , a 20km-long (12.4-mile) peninsula with powdery sand, bathtub-temperature sea and all-inclusive resorts,  Varadero has all the amenities required to enjoy a fun-filled day trip. Take an early ride 140km (87 miles) east of Havana center and you’ll be sitting under a palm leaf umbrella before 10am.

Take a dip in the Caribbean or sip cocktails in the shade before heading out for a late lunch at any of Varadero’s notable restaurants. With impeccable service and seafood,  Varadero 60 is highly recommended. For an after-lunch spirit, opt for the mahogany-wood Casa Blanca Panoramic Bar atop Mansión Xanadú. The view over the sunbathed peninsula is simply unparalleled.

How to get to Varadero from Havana: Book an air-conditioned Viazul bus at Terminal de Ómnibus (approximately US$9; three to four hours). When Viazul buses are in high demand, colectivos  (shared taxis) are also an option and are quicker.

You can book one directly at any hotel desk, at your casa particular  (private homestay) or just by hanging around at the bus station. A regular taxi from Havana costs the equivalent of around US$100–150 one way.

Seafront and fortress of Cojímar, Cuba

5. Explore Cojímar, Hemingway’s favorite fishing village

Travel time: 20 minutes

Just east of Havana’s old quarter is the charming fishing village of Cojímar, famous for hosting Ernest Hemingway’s maritime adventures back in the 1940s and ‘50s. Tourist buses usually stop at  Restaurante La Terraza for a daiquiri on the terrace, but more hearty meals and fantastic mojitos are offered at  Ajiaco Café .

This little town is a slow-paced community, where it's possible to meet locals in a 100% Cuban environment. Walk around the malecón,  a smaller version of Havana’s iconic promenade, for a glimpse of the natural allure that enchanted Papa all those years ago.

For the best pictures of the seaside town, head to the  Torreón de Cojímar , a wrecked Spanish fort from the 17th century that was the first to be taken by the British when Havana was attacked in 1762.

How to get to Cojímar from Havana: Yellow cabs from Parque Central or any other part of Old Havana cost the equivalent of around US$10 to Cojímar. Old American classic cars may be more expensive, but the scenic ride is worth it. Agree with the driver on a one-way fare if you'll spend more than a couple of hours in Cojímar, but ask for a round-trip offer if you only want a glimpse of the landmarks.

Cuban band performing live music

6. Check out music and culture in revitalized Matanzas

Travel time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Ignored for decades in favor of Varadero, Matanzas , a once-prosperous cultural hub 100km (62 miles) east of Havana, is making a comeback.

A government-sponsored renovation campaign initiated in 2018 to celebrate the city’s 325th anniversary sparked the renaissance. The staging of the Biennial – Cuba’s biggest art festival – in the city the following year raised its profile further.

The improvements are most marked in the rejuvenated art and architecture of Calle Narváez. Once part of a grubby warehouse district beside the San Juan River, this attractive waterside promenade has become the city’s beating heart, dotted with free-to-enter galleries, public sculptures and a lively ensemble of bars and restaurants, including the cafe-art-collective, Artys.

Elsewhere, look out for matinee performances at the restored Teatro Sauto, and check out the pots and potions at the longstanding pharmaceutical museum. If you arrive on a Friday afternoon, you might get lucky with some live street rumba (Afro-Cuban music and dance) in the historic confines of Plaza de la Vigía.   How to get to Matanzas from Havana:  The city is accessible on daily Viazul buses (approximately US$7; two hours). A taxi will get you there in around one hour and 45 minutes but is more expensive. Bank on the equivalent of US$80 and up.

9 Days | Travel to Cuba and experience the enthralling history of this fascinating Caribbean island.

Havana Buick in street

Experience the splendour of Cuba – a cobblestoned Caribbean gem where the rum is plentiful, the smiles infectious and dancing is essential. Join our Hola Cuba adventure and wind your way from sultry Havana and its crumbling churches, through the valleys and farms of Pinar del Rio, and on to the Afro-inspired beats of Trinidad. Along the way we’ve assembled a cast of Cuban characters to give you a proper welcome – tobacco farmers, expert chefs, local artists, historians and salsa dancers that understand where Cuba came from, where the country sits now and, more importantly, where it’s going.

Trip overview

  • Learn the local customs, folklore and beliefs behind Afro-Cuban religion as you’re welcomed into the homes of devoted residents on a colourful and unconventional Urban Adventure in Havana.
  • Relish a real garden-to-plate dining experience at a privately-owned organic eco-farm in picturesque Vinales – indulge in a variety of fresh produce all while gazing across sweeping views of the valley.
  • Receive a fascinating insight into the rise and fall of the charismatic and highly celebrated Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara at his mausoleum and museum in Santa Clara.
  • Experience Cuban hospitality and old-world charm in the coastal town of Trinidad. Wander through cobblestone streets among colourful colonial buildings and relax on the picturesque Playa Ancon.
  • Support the Cuban community by staying at privately-owned guesthouses, dining at home-grown restaurants, and gaining insider knowledge into Cuba’s history, thanks to the expertise of local guides.
  • The guesthouses (casas) we use are much nicer than your average Cuban dwelling and each room is unique. Regardless of where you stay, power cuts and breaks in hot water supply are sometimes unavoidable, as in any developing country – but we believe that this is all a part of the local experience. To help set your expectations correctly, please read the ‘Accommodation’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Part of Cuba’s appeal is its old-fashioned style – this includes the banking systems. Funds in Cuba can be difficult to access. Please read our Essential Trip Information to be fully prepared.
  • Luxuries such as air conditioning, plush pillows, and fly screens, are often scarce. Part of the experience here is learning to appreciate everyday Cuban resourcefulness.
  • Internet access can be hard to come by, and when it's available it's often unreliable and expensive. Treat this as a great opportunity to take a break from modern devices and have a true holiday.
  • Cuba is different, and that's a big part of its allure. Things don't always go according to plan, and many things don't work the same way as back home. Patience and good humor will go a long way in this beautiful destination.
  • Due to licensing restrictions, only 1-night pre-tour accommodation may be requested. Post-tour accommodation cannot be offered.

Bienvenido a Cuba! Welcome to Cuba! Upon arrival, soak in the decaying beauty of Havana and the surreal feeling that you have entered a bygone era. This is a very historic time to visit Cuba, as the gates finally creak open to a country so long forbidden, an opportunity has arisen to support the Cuban people and explore their incredible country. As there are no activities planned until your important welcome meeting at 6 pm – why not take a stroll to get acquainted with Cuba’s capital, where vintage cars, plumes of cigar smoke, Neo-Gothic churches and Art Deco theatres come together in a unique mesh of histories. After your welcome meeting, enjoy dinner at a local paladar, a privately-owned restaurant and a great example of Cuba’s incremental shift to a more free-market economy. Paladar means ‘palate’ but the popular usage of the word to describe this kind of restaurant references a Brazilian soap opera popular in Cuba in the 1990s.

  • Comfortable guesthouse (1 night)
  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

We have recently renamed the accommodation style on this trip to better reflect the different standards of accommodation we use across our different trip styles in Cuba. The standard of accommodation on this trip has not changed.

This morning, find out more about the local customs, folklore and beliefs of Cuba’s Afro-Cuban religion from an insider on a colourful and unconventional tour with Urban Adventures. Be welcomed into private homes and take the opportunity to learn from the devoted residents as you explore one of Havana’s sub-cultures at a grassroots level, something not often experienced by tourists. Next, you’ll get to see outer Havana in a convoy of classic American vintage cars. Cruise via points of interest – such as the Malecon, Revolution Square, Avenida de los presidentes and ending in Old Havana. Next, your leader will take you on a walking tour around the charming neighbourhood of Old Havana (approximately 2.5 hours). The best place to start any Havana experience is in the Old City, which is one of the best-preserved towns and in 1982 was designated a World Heritage Site. The streets are lined with colonial architecture, 16th-century fortresses and countless churches. Visit La Catedral San Cristobal de la Habana, the Palacio de los Marqueses de Aguas Claras and the Plaza de Armas. After a full day of exploration, enjoy an evening at leisure.

  • Havana - Afro-Cuban Religion Tour (guide and transport included)
  • Havana - Leader led City Tour of Old Havana
  • Havana - American Vintage Car Tour (No guide and transport included)

This morning, head east to Vinales. En route stop by an outer-Havana suburb to see the passion project of Jose Fuster, an artist who has turned an entire neighbourhood into a lively and colourful series of mosaics. Known as 'Fusterlandia', the inspiring and whimsical scenery is a perfect spot for pictures. Continue your journey to a local community in Las Terrazas (approximately 2 hours). The village was built as part of a government reforestation project and has since received a UNESCO biosphere listing. Meet up with local community leaders who will share insights into Las Terrazas and how the society works. You’ll also visit the ecological research centre and take a guided walk around the complex. After lunch take a 2 hour drive to Vinales – situated in one of the most picturesque parts of Cuba, it’s a small and culturally rich village, with friendly and welcoming residents. On your way into the village, you may pass by the vibrant Mural de la Prehistoria at the foot of the verdant Sierra de Vinales. Take the short journey into the centre of town and arrive in time for a brief orientation walk before heading to a privately-owned organic farm to learn about sustainable farming in Cuba. Hopefully meet local farmer Wilfredo Garcia Correa or at least his family who will show us around the farm and explain the methods used to cultivate crops without the use of pesticides, then enjoy a deliciously fresh and diverse meal prepared by the family, a truly authentic farm-to-fork experience!

  • Havana - Jaimanitas (Mosaic-laden Neighbourhood) including Fusterlandia (Entrance fee)
  • Las Terrazas - Sustainable Rural Economy Project (Entrance fee and Guide included)
  • Vinales - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Vinales - Farm-to-table dinner at an eco-friendly ranch

Today at 9 am, spend the morning (approximately 3 hours) finding out more about Cuban agriculture with a visit to a local tobacco farm to learn about the tradition of Cuban cigars. Get an insight as to how the communist system works, how much tobacco they keep, how much produce they give back to the government and how they make ends meet. Learn about the process of tobacco planting to rolling the final cigar. Share in the secret recipe of how they cure their leaves, which originated from one family and has been passed down through three generations – then drink some freshly roasted coffee from the farm while watching an expert roll a cigar. In the afternoon, get involved in a 1-hour salsa dance lesson, followed by a cooking demonstration from a local chef. Vinales is one of the more agriculturally productive areas of Cuba, so an abundance of homegrown seasonal fruit and vegetables are always on offer such as avocados, mangoes, pineapples, papaya, guava, and several varieties of sweet potatoes. Sit back, relax and enjoy the well-prepared meal while overlooking the lush scenery of Vinales.

  • Vinales - Half-day Valley tour on foot including Tobacco Farmhouse
  • Vinales - Salsa dance lesson (1 hour)
  • Vinales - Cooking Demonstration by Local Chef

Depart Vinales at 8 am and head to Cienfuegos – drive for approximately 4.5 hours before stopping for lunch. This afternoon you’ll visit the Korimakao Cultural Project in Ciénega de Zapata, an area famous for its wetlands. Founded in 1992, Korimakao is a project to bring theatre, music, and dancing to remote areas of Cuba. You’ll have the opportunity to meet a director of the project, who will talk to you about the importance of this venture and the number of students that have benefited from it. Continue along to the picturesque town of Cienfuegos (1.5 hours), a slice of Paris in the Caribbean. Founded in 1819 by pioneering French immigrants – the elegant architectural influence that these settlers brought with them, earned the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing in 2005.

  • Cienaga de Zapata - Korimakao Cultural Project (entrance fee, guide and transport included)
  • Cienfuegos - Leader-led orientation walk

This morning at approximately 8.30 am, your leader will show you around the charming streets of Cienfuegos before getting back on the road around 10 am, heading towards the National Park of Topes de Collantes (approximately 2 hours). Here there is a stop for a swim in a waterfall and to have lunch at a small privately-owned family farm. Travel onwards to the beautiful city of Trinidad (approximately 1.5 hours). Located near the lovely Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of Sugar Mills) and Playa Ancón, Trinidad enjoys long stretches of unspoiled, white sand beaches and is home to numerous churches and well-preserved colonial buildings. After lunch, begin with a guided cultural tour of the city (approximately 3 hours) – this includes an opportunity to visit two museums such as Museo Nacional de la Lucha Contra Bandidos, Museo Romantico or the History museum. Later, visit the privately-owned pottery workshop of the Santander family. This family are well known in the Cuban cultural landscape for having produced pottery for generations as well as assisting in the restoration of sculptures that once existed in this UNESCO world heritage site. Support the Cuban economy by taking the chance to purchase your own pottery as a reminder of your time in Cuba. In the evening, perhaps seek out the dance scene in Cuba. You may wish to see the local Afro Cuban Folkloric dance group that perform shows at the club Palenque, which has cultural and social importance in this region. Nightlife in Trinidad is probably the most accessible and intense in all of Cuba, with numerous live music venues and many dance performances every day of the week.

  • Trinidad - Leader-led City Tour including Museums (entrance fees, guide and transport included)
  • Trinidad - Pottery Centre
  • Trinidad - Afro-Cuban folklore show (entrance fee) from - EUR3
  • Trinidad - Cave Disco (entrance fee) - EUR14

This morning is yours to explore Trinidad by selecting one of the many optional activities on offer. Perhaps you’d like to hire a bike and cycle along the city’s colorful streets, past once-grand mansions, pastel buildings and wrought iron features – or instead you might choose to explore one of the excellent walking trails in the nearby Sierra del Escambray mountains. Your leader can suggest a lunch place at a local paladar. In the afternoon head to Playa Ancon for some beach time fun and maybe a little snorkeling, followed by a sunset picnic prepared for you by one of the privately-owned guesthouses.

  • Trinidad - Sunset Picnic at Playa Ancon (Weather Dependent)
  • Trinidad - Musical Instrument Lesson (guitar, double bass, tres, percussion) per hour - EUR10
  • Trinidad - Trek to El Nicho Waterfall (entrance fee, guide and transport included) - EUR257

Leave Trinidad around 9 am, heading to Santa Clara (approximately 2 hours), a key city in the Cuban Revolution to see the iconic statue of Ernesto Ché Guevara, built to commemorate his death and that of the revolutionaries. There will be time to explore the museum which honours Che's life. Drive back to Havana (approximately 3 hours) where there will be some time to freshen up before a final fun-filled night of music, dinner and dancing at Rosalia de Castro – where you’ll enjoy an ensemble of Cuban classics performed live by Buena Vista Social Club!

  • Santa Clara - Che Guevara Mausoleum and Museum (entrance fee)
  • Havana - Buena Vista Social Club Performance (entrance fee & dinner)

Your adventure ends today after breakfast. There are no activities planned for the final day so remember to say good-bye to your leader before you head back to the U.S.

About This Tour

8-Day-Cuba-Tour-itinerary

Why we love this trip:

  • 8 days in Cuba gives you enough time to gain a truly unique insight into Cuba and the people who call her home.
  • Though the tour is exhaustive, it’s certainly not exhausting, with plenty of spare time to explore Cuba on your own (particularly its remarkable nightlife).
  • You’ll get to see the glory of Viñales – a stunningly beautiful village that’s also the heart of Cuba’s tobacco production.
  • The beaches you used to love might not seem so special after some of the beaches you’ll experience on our 8 day Cuba group tour.
  • If you don’t already have a taste for Cuban cocktails, you probably will after this tour! And of course, you’ll learn how to make your own under friendly, expert tutelage.
  • Take in the French-inspired architecture of Cienfuegos.
  • You’ll visit the final resting place of the iconic (and controversial) Che Guevara.
  • The people of Cuba. Meeting the locals might well be your most-loved part of our 8 day Cuba group tour.

Is this Cuba tour for me?

Our Cuba group tours are perfect for those who want the freedom and flexibility to travel at their own pace, along with the security, camaraderie and cultural insight that comes from travelling with a local English-speaking guide and small group.

  • Age is just a number… well that’s what we think anyway. Our tours suit a particular travel ethos, rather than age group. Our ideal traveller is someone that wants to immerse themselves in Cuban culture and experience everything that makes Cuba so unique.. the amazing, the confusing and the confounding.
  • Cuban B&B’s (Casa Particulares) are family run business which are set-up to provide B&B style accommodation to foreigners – a unique cultural experience. Casa’s are generally much nicer than normal Cuban dwellings but can be more basic than foreigners are used to. It is important to remember that each room at a Casa is unique in its size and set-up. Whether you stay in a hotel or Casa, sometimes power cuts and breaks in hot water are unavoidable in any developing country.
  • Part of the experience of traveling through Cuba is experiencing Cuban resourcefulness. Spare parts are often difficult and expensive to come by, so don’t be surprised if your notice that ‘Cuban innovation’ has been used to keep various things working.
  • Access to the internet in Cuba is getting better but can still be variable, slow and unreliable. It is also relatively expensive to get online at a hotel or one of the various Wifi zones that have been set-up across the country. Traveling through Cuba offers a great opportunity to take a break from your electronic devices and have a truly relaxing experience.
  • Cuba is a unique travel destination and that is what makes it so popular. It is part of the ‘laid back Caribbean’ and things don’t always go to plan or schedule. A great sense of humour and patience are qualities that will go along way in making your stay in Cuba an enjoyable one.

Estimated travel times:

It can be a little annoying when a tour group is rushed from place to place, but this doesn’t happen on our 8 day Cuba group tour. A leisurely pace of life is something the Cuban people pride themselves on, so on a longer journey we will of course stop for lunch, a chance to stretch your legs, and to take in the beauty of your surroundings. Your approximate travel times on your 8 day Cuba group tour will be as follows:

  • From Havana to Cienfuegos (via Bay of Pigs): 5 hours
  • From Cienfuegos to Trinidad (via Santa Clara): 3 hours
  • From Trinidad to Havana: 5 hours
  • From Havana to Viñales: 3 hours

To download our Cuba drive times map ( click here ).

Transportation:

All private transportation is included  between  destinations and for any activities/ excursions included in your itinerary that require transportation to and from the activity. Any extra transportation requirements can be organised through your Cuban guide and paid for locally in Cuba.

Public transport in Cuba can be amusingly chaotic, but this is not something that you’ll need to be concerned about. You will be driven from destination to destination in comfort, using private transportation, with air conditioning of course, which you will probably be rather thankful for!

Spending money on tour:

Everyone spends their money differently while on tour. Some days you might be tempted to spend a little more, and other days you might not. It’s completely up to you. Many of your primary expenses are included in your 8 day Cuba group tour, but you will need to consider other expenses, namely drinks, food, souvenirs, tips and of course, any optional excursions and activities. We estimate that you will need approximately €45.00 Euro to €60.00 Euro per person, per day to cover your local expenses.

Travel to Cuba from the U.S.:

For those traveling to Cuba from the U.S. (regardless of nationality), please note that the documentation we will include with your booking will help ensure your compliance with current U.S. travel restrictions (515.574 Support for the Cuban People). In addition to retaining your itinerary, please keep records of your booking receipt, airline receipt, and any supplemental insurance purchased. You should retain these copies for 5 years after your travel. Some of our travelers have been asked to furnish these upon application for Global Entry, Pre-Check, and other programs with TSA oversight.

8 Day Cuba GrouP TOUR ITINERARY

How to sum up Havana? This complex, culturally-rich, and fascinatingly contradictory city can perhaps be described in a single word: Alive. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle, but our expert local guides will ensure that your 8 day Cuba group tour will never be overwhelming. It’s important to remember that the first day of your 8 days in Cuba is considered to be a joining day, so any activities on this day will depend on what time your flight arrives. While there are no activities planned on this first part of the tour, your accommodation will have been arranged and you have the option to meet your guide and fellow tour members for a delicious dinner.

The heart of this scintillating city is undoubtedly Havana’s Old Town (La Habana Vieja). This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a sublime assault on your senses, with the beauty of the colonial era architecture combining with the spirit of the locals to make an experience that almost feels like some kind of immersive theatre production. Many of the main points of interest are within a conveniently close proximity to each other, so you can experience much of the city on foot (so be sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes). If you want to spend extra time in Cuba’s capital, we will be very happy to arrange your accommodation, and our expert guides will be able to give you some great recommendations about what parts of the city (and surrounding countryside) you should explore on your own.  You can also book any extra day tours you might be interested in, through our sister organisation – Locally Sourced Havana Tours – www.havanatourcompany.com

ACCOMMODATION

  • Authentic, Upgraded or Superior B&B’s
  • Airport Transfer on Arrival (Havana airport)

MEALS INCLUDED

  • No meals included on this day

Cienfuegos is often referred to as the Paris of the Caribbean, but upon arrival, you’ll wonder why anyone needs to compare this pearl of a city to anywhere else. There’s also a treat on the way to Cienfuegos. We’ll make a stop at Playa Girón, which is otherwise known as the Bay of Pigs. This infamous spot was where the US attempted to stage an invasion of Cuba, which was ultimately a failure… and a big one at that.

At the Bay of Pigs, you can visit the local museum to learn more about the areas history and there will also be time for some swimming and snorkelling on one of Cuba’s best reefs.

And then it’s time to go to Cienfuegos, whose Parisian comparisons come from the French settlers who made the city their home. Many of them came to Cuba from other territories in the New World and their architectural influence on the city is obvious.

The wide boulevards and expansive parklands are ravishing, and history is on proud display at every turn. At the entrance to the harbour you’ll see the Castillo de Jagua, an ancient fort that allowed the city to withstand the pirate attacks that were once common in Cuba. Many buildings in the town have been given UNESCO world heritage status, and you might think you’ve never seen such a beautiful town… until we show you some other places on your 8 day Cuba group tour.

Take a gentle stroll through Parque José Martí, and then spend some time sitting by the  oceanfront Malecón. Though perhaps not as well-known as the walkway of the same name in Havana, the Malecón in Cienfuegos is actually the longest seaside esplanade in the whole country.

  • Authentic or Upgraded B&B’s

INCLUDED ACTIVITIES

  • Swim/ Snorkel at the Bay of Pigs

Visit Museum Giron

Guided Orientation Walk of Cienfuegos City

1 x Drink at the impressive Palacio de Valle

Your journey to Trinidad features a stop in the city of Santa Clara to pay your respects to Cuba’s most famous adopted hero. Argentinian-born Che Guevara became an icon of the Cuban Revolution, and after he died attempting to do in Bolivia what he did in Cuba, his body was unceremoniously buried in an unmarked grave. When his remains were discovered, he was exhumed and brought to Santa Clara for a hero’s burial in a purpose-built mausoleum. Santa Clara was the site of one of the final (and bloodiest) battles in the revolution, the city where Guevara and his rebels successfully derailed a military train carrying weapons and ammunition to be used against Fidel Castro.

And then it’s time to continue to Trinidad, a true delight located in Cuba’s heartland. This city was founded in 1514 and rose to prominence due to the extensive sugar production that took place in the nearby Valley of the Sugar Mills. This came to an end when slavery was abolished in Cuba, and Trinidad’s fortunes began a rapid decline. It has since been painstakingly restored, and the central city is now like a living, breathing, fascinating museum. Take the opportunity to visit a local waterfall, historic sugar mill or one of Cuba’s best beaches – Playa Ancon.

  • Che Guevara Memorial and Museum
  • Guided Trinidad Township Walk

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

  • There will be some free time at this destination to choose from a range of Optional Activities , that can be organised through your local guide and paid for locally.

How will you know you’re getting close to Viñales on your 8 day Cuba group tour? Perhaps it will be the red, rich, fertile soil. Maybe it will be the mogotes – dramatic, circular rock formations that look like a beauty mark jutting upwards from the earth. Maybe it’s the fact that your guide will start to excitedly tell you that you’re almost there! Viñales is reasonably close to Havana, and has been popular with visitors for generations. In the heart of the Pinar del Rio valley, most of Cuba’s tobacco production takes place in and around Viñales. A closer exploration of this remarkable farmland with a succulent lunch at an organic farm is going to be a highlight during your 8 days in Cuba.

When the sun goes down, the village of Viñales comes out to play. There is a remarkable energy to the township, which is deceptive given its relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.

* Please note that the drive between Trinidad and Vinales can be lengthy (8+ hours). For this reason, your guide might recommend that you come back as far as Havana on this day and travel to Vinales on the following morning.

  • Authentic or Upgraded Casa’s/ B&B’s
  • Guided Orientation Walk of Vinales Township
  • Tobacco Farm and Drying House
  • Lunch at an Organic Farm

Oh Havana, you’re so heavenly. It’s time to head back to the Cuban capital for the last days of your tour. There will be a number of arranged activities, plus plenty of chances to explore at your own leisure. Don’t forget that there are a couple of amazing treats waiting for you during these last days of your 8 day Cuba group tour. You’ll get to see all the different elements of the city while on four wheels in one of those classic American cars that the island is famous for. You’ll also be taken to one of our favourite spots in the whole city, a rooftop terrace in Havana’s Old Town. You will be taught how to make a delicious mojito (or a non-alcoholic alternative if you prefer) before enjoying a stunning dinner with your guide and the fellow members of your 8 day Cuba group tour. Is there a better way to end your 8 days in Cuba than with a relaxing dinner while watching the sun go down over one of the most glorious cities in the world?

Day eight of the tour is time to say goodbye, with no scheduled activities. This means you are free to leave at any time, depending on when your flight leaves. But of course, your expert local guide can give you suggestions about what to do if you happen to have much of the day free. You could, of course, simply perch yourself in one of Havana’s sublime plazas and watch the world go by…

  • Roof-top Mojito Making Lesson
  • Farewell Dinner
  • Airport Transfer on departure (Havana airport)

Our single supplement policy:.

It can be a common annoyance when you travel by yourself on a group tour. Why do you need to be charged a large single supplement fee for your accommodation? We don’t know why this is, and we don’t like it anymore than you do! This is why we keep our single supplement fee as low as possible,  if you happen to be making your way to Cuba as a solo adventurer on one of our Cuba group tours. You will still have the option of sharing a room, but it’s entirely up to you.

Airport transfer:

Your 8 day Cuba group tour includes being picked up at Havana’s José Martí International Airport and delivered to your accommodation in the city. For your departure, your guide can help you to arrange transportation at a time that’s convenient for you.

Fitness requirements:

While there are some optional activities and excursions that could be considered to be physically strenuous, the vast majority of your 8 days in Cuba will not be physically demanding. Having said that, you will need to have an average level of fitness and mobility. There will be a lot of exploration on foot, and so you should be able to walk without the assistance of another person. Please also remember that you will be required to carry your own luggage in many instances, as well as being able to enter and exit the tour bus. Some attractions and accommodations also require you to climb stairs.

Accommodation on tour:

We just know you’re going to love staying in a Casa Particular. These Cuban bed and breakfast establishments offer a taste of authentic life on the island. Their increasing popularity is a reflection of how Cuba is easing a lot of former restrictions on private enterprise. This allows Cuban families to convert a section of their home into accommodation, giving them a stream of income, while also allowing visitors to stay in a more welcoming environment than most hotels are able to offer. You’ll have privacy while still being able to interact with the locals as much as you want. It’s a stark difference to most types of accommodation, and you will truly be made to feel welcome – you might forget that you’re a paying guest and not a long lost member of the family, and this is all part of the fun. Some accommodation providers are in older buildings without an elevator. If you believe that your physical capabilities will make it difficult to climb stairs, simply let us know. We will be able to find you a suitable alternative. And if you should want to spend a few extra days in Havana (and who wouldn’t?), please let us know. You can easily use our online form when making your booking to arrange additional accommodation as needed.

Our 8 Day / 7 Night Cuba Group Tour uses Authentic Casa/ B&B accommodation with the opportunity to upgrade to ‘upgraded’ or ‘superior’ options.  You can learn more about staying in Casa’s here .

The top places to visit as a day trip from Varadero are those which will give you a different flavor of Varadero, but also those that aren’t too far away – spending hours and hours traveling can eat into your holiday time!  So let’s start with our top picks for Varadero Day Trips with one of the most popular trips to take from Varadero – a day trip to Havana.

1. Varadero Day Trip to Havana – The best cultural Varadero day trip

It will take you around 2 hours each way from Varadero to Havana by private transfer.  (check prices and availability of private transfers to Havana here ).  You can also take the Viazul Bus to Varadero from Havana, but it’s not really an option for a day trip – as the bus stations aren’t convenient and neither are the bus times!

day trip to Havana from Varadero

This private day trip to Havana from Varadero is a great option if you want to see the sights of Havana, but not commit to more than a day.    It is a full 12-hour day trip to Havana.   On pick up from your hotel, you’ll head straight to Havana and right into Old Havana – the capital’s historic center.  And it won’t be long before you’re surrounded by the charming colonial streets and the stunning classic cars here.  In this full-day tour of Havana, you’ll get to see such sights as the Capitol Building, the bars that Ernest Hemingway frequented, Havana port, and Morro Castle.  You’ll also get to see the Museum of the Revolution (one of our top things to see in Havana ) and you’ll learn about the history of Cuba, from its foundation in the 16th century to the days following the Revolution.

Don’t worry there’s also a break for lunch where you’ll get to experience one of Havana’s paladares (private restaurants) and then it’s on to the more modern Havana – the fashionable neighborhoods of Vedado and Miramar overlooking Havana’s famous Malecón esplanade.  This day trip to Havana from Varadero also takes in the enormous Plaza de la Revolución Square, where the famous giant portrait of Che Guevara by artist Enrique Ávila is located. Here, we will also admire the elegant Monument to José Martí. You can check the cost and availability of this day trip to Havana from Varadero here.

At the end of your tour in Havana, you’ll be delivered back to your hotel in Varadero for a well-earned cocktail or two!

2. Cayo Blanco Catamaran Trip from Varadero with Lobster Lunch

Cayo Blanco is a deserted white sand island with a dreamy beach, getting to it on a sailing catamaran trip from Varadero is a delight.   This is the most popular day trip from Varadero – sail on the stunning Caribbean sea to a desert island and enjoy a lobster lunch with an open bar.  What’s not to love?

Cayo Blanco from Varadero day trip

On this fabulous sailing trip from Varadero , you’ll be collected from your hotel and then board a luxury catamaran and sail for about two hours, heading for Cayo Blanco.  There’s a coral reef here, so you’ll be able to snorkel and discover Cuba’s marine life, lie in the sun, or just swim in the stunning sea.  While you’re enjoying your free time your crew is preparing a delicious lunch, which includes lobster and an open bar of Cuban cocktails, which you can enjoy on the beach or the catamaran.    The trip includes access to snorkel equipment, although this is one of the items that we recommend you bring to Cuba.   At the end of the day, you’ll be taken back to your hotel in Varadero for a snooze or cocktail hour.  Your choice. Check out the options for this fabulous sailing day trip from Varadero.

3. Visit Vinales from Varadero on a day trip

This 13-hour day trip from Varadero to Vinales Valley is an amazing day out from Varadero. You’ll get to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the   famous tobacco plantations of Viñales , the largest tobacco producer on the island! You’ll also get to see how Cuban cigars are traditionally rolled and visit the Vinales Botanical Garden. There’s more about what’s included here.

Vinales Valley day trip from Varadero

Then you’ll want to stop by the infamous Mural of Prehistory, painted on Jurassic rocks and one of the largest open-air frescoes in the world! A final stop in the Vinales Valley is the “balcony of Vinales” or the Los Jazmines viewpoint. It’s a fab place for a photo stop. If you have more time, then our guide to the Vinales Valley is here , or if you just want to visit for the day, then this day trip to Vinales from Varadero is fabulous. This really is the best way to visit Vinales from Varadero.

4. Take a Day Trip from Varadero to Dive the Bay of Pigs

We spent several days in Playa Giron and Playa Larga, exploring the Bay of Pigs area, but the primary reason we went there was to dive the Bay of Pigs. You can read about our adventures here . But it’s now also possible to take a day trip from Varadero to the Bay of Pigs to dive!

This is an AMAZING deal. Honestly, we paid the same amount for this back in 2017! (and that was just to dive, no transport included!!).

This diving day trip to the Bay of Pigs gives you two dives, and all equipment is provided as well as the transport to and from your hotel in Varadero. You’ll be provided with an English-speaking instructor too! It’s a fabulous trip and you’ll love it. It may also be possible for non-divers to join you and snorkel as well! You’ll need to ask at your hotel in Varadero, as it’s currently not possible to book a diving trip to the Bay of Pigs online.

5. Speedboat and National Park Day Trip from Varadero

If you want to get back to nature and combine adrenalin and the natural world then this is the Varadero day trip for you. You’ll not only get to visit the Peninsula Zapata National Park but also head to a crocodile farm, and then boarding a speedboat, you’ll cross the Laguna del Tesoro lake and get to enjoy a glorious natural wilderness surrounded by water an d vegetation. This tour visits Guamá and the Hatiguanico River, and is a fabulous way to explor e both the coast and inland from Varadero. Check out more details, the tour includes lunch and you’ll also get time to snorkel (equipment is provided). It’s a fabulous day out from Varadero.

6. Head to Matanzas for a day trip from Varadero + see the Bellamar Caves

You can get to Matanzas quite easily – it’s around 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Varadero.  The Viazul Bus (see our guide for how these buses work here ) runs from Varadero to Matanzas 3 times a day, but it’s not always a good time for making a day trip to Matanzas from Varadero.    You must buy a ticket at least an hour ahead of time from the Viazul terminal on the corner of Calle 36 and the highway – one block off of the main street and availability is not good at the last minute.

You’ll also be able to grab a taxi on the street or flag down a shared van.  Always agree on the price before you get in and make sure that you know if the price is for the car or per person.

You can also book a private transfer to Matanzas – check prices here.

If you’re taking a day trip to Matanzas you’ll want to see at least some of the 17 bridges that this “city of bridges” is famous for.  The Puente de Bacunayagua is the highest in Cuba, resting 100 meters near the River Yumuri.   Taking a walk around the center of Matanzas is interesting – you’ll want to stop at the San Severino Castle Museum where you can take a guided tour of the castle and fortress and understand a little about slavery in Cuba too.   Wander through Parque Libertad – a lovely green space at the heart of Matanzas.  The Sauto Theatre is also rather picturesque.   For museum lovers, the Pharmaceutical Museum (Museo Farmaceutico) in front of Parque Libertad, is a stunning display of a 19th-century pharmacy and a guided tour is well worth it.  (I think it’s better than the one in Havana).  Finally, while you’re out this way, I’d recommend including a trip to Bellamar Caves.  They’re some of the biggest and most impressive in the Caribbean (there are more caves also in the Vinales region to explore).   The Bellamar Caves were discovered in 1861 and are about 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the southeast of Matanzas.  Guided tours are available and entry costs around US$8.

Trinidad as a day trip from Varadero

An alternative to Bellamar Caves or an addition even is the Cueva de Saturno (Saturn Cave) – it’s a cenote  – which has stalactites, blind cavefish, and cave shrimp.  Swimming in the freshwater here is very popular and you can also arrange to dive in the cenote.  Entry costs US$5 and the Cueva de Saturno is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from Matanzas.

For a great lunch with a fabulous view head to Chef Bahia on the main coast road to Varadero.

If you’re considering a day trip from Varadero to Matanzas, we really do recommend either organizing your own itinerary and route, planning it via a private transfer/taxi, and making the most of your day in Matanzas or booking a tour that takes you to all the important places.

7. Visit the Yumuri Valley on a day trip from Varadero

The Yumuri Valley is one of Cuba’s most scenic natural areas, it follows the Yumuri River for 54 kilometers (33.5 miles) and is recognized for its biodiversity and archaeological sites. There’s a 150-meter high mountain ridge that surrounds the river which provides several great vantage points to the valley.    As these are rough roads and the tracks through the valley aren’t paved, it’s a great option for taking an off-road 4×4 jeep to see the valley.   The best option for visiting the Yumuri Valley from Varadero is to take a tour that collects you from your hotel in Varadero and takes you to where the 4×4 jeeps are located.

Check out where you can go in the Yumuri Valley here.

And this is where it gets awesome – as you’ll get to drive your own jeep through the jungle and sugar cane fields!    You will need a valid driving license, but if you don’t have one or don’t feel like driving, then you can also hire a driver.  As well as driving through the river valley you’ll be able to enjoy snorkeling at Coral Beach where there’s an impressive coral reef.  Then you’ll get a speedboat ride on the Caminar River through the rainforest. There’s a cultural performance and a traditional Cuban lunch is also provided.  You can then fully experience the Yumuri Valley with either a visit to a coffee plantation, a trip on the river, or a horseback ride through the forest.

Boating from Varadero

This Yumuri Valley day trip continues with a visit to the Saturnos Cave – where there are two large caverns and a natural pool – you can swim in the pool too.  This gloriously natural tour from Varadero finishes up with a visit to the El Campesino agroecological farm – it’s a sustainable eco-farm and there’s loads to learn there.

This tour is a great option if you’d like to have a mix of activities while seeing some of the stunning natural landscapes of Cuba and it includes pick up and drop off from your hotel, an English-speaking guide, Snorkel equipment at Coral Beach (although we recommend bringing your own to Cuba), a boat trip on the Caminar river, entry to the Cave of Saturn, horseback riding in Rancho Gaviota and your food and drink.

8. Sugar, Rum, and Tobacco Tour from Varadero

There’s nothing like a taste of Cuba tour – and this is definitely that – you’ll get to visit a sugar cane plantation and taste Cuban rum and tobacco !  While technically you could visit all these places by yourself, you’ll need to have some really good Spanish and a big local knowledge, so this guided tour, with an English-speaking guide and driver, is a fabulous way to cram a whole lot of taste into one day!

The first stop is a sugar cane museum where you’ll learn about how sugar cane is grown, and how its processed, the tools and machines used for this.  And of course, there’s tasting – the first taste is guarapo , a refreshing sweet drink made from sugar cane, before learning about one of Cuba’s famous cocktails and then making it.

Check availability on this tour here

This tour then heads to the town of Cardenas, which has lovely colonial architecture and quite charming streets.  You’ll get to follow in the footsteps of the Arechabala family, creators of the famous  Havana Club rum in a horse-drawn carriage ride  around the town before you stop for lunch.  After lunch, which is included, you’ll get to taste local rum and tobacco while learning about their importance to both the Cuban culture and economy.    When you’re finished you’ll be dropped back at your hotel in Varadero.

Fancy this sugar cane, rum, and tobacco history and tasting day trip from Varadero?  Check more details and book your place now!

9. Learn about the history of rum and cigars in a Varadero Day Trip to Cardenas

It was in Cardenas that Havana Club Rum was born, and that makes it a great place to learn about the history of rum in Cuba. There’s lots more to see in Varadero though – from the Battle of Ideas Museum – where there’s heaps of Cuban history and a fabulous historic city center. As this is the home of Havana Club there are also artisans based here, who make rum barrels by hand! If you’ve rented a car in Cuba, you can get to Cardenas from Varadero quite easily, but if not, then this day trip to Cardenas from Varadero is a great option. It includes a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic center, accompanied by rum tastings and a visit to Callejón Gastón, to explore Cuban religions and then start exploring Cuban cigars. Cardenas is a delight and a great place to visit on a day trip from Varadero. Want to know more about Cuban Cigars? My full guide is here.

10. Take a Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, and Trinidad Tour from Varadero

You’ll get to see some of Cuba’s most important historic and cultural sites with this tour of Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, and Trinidad from Varadero.   It’s a long day with a start at 0620 – although you will get a stop for breakfast en route!  In Santa Clara, you’ll visit a monument in memory of the Cuban Revolution – the armored train and then the resting place of Ernesto Che Guevara.  After visiting Santa Clara , you’ll continue to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Trinidad.  It’s here that you’ll get a typical Cuban lunch and then visit Parque Central, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and the handicraft market.   You’ll want to make time while you’re here to try the famous Cuban Cocktail from Trinidad, the Canchanchara – it was invented here.

If you’rVisit Cienfuegos from Varaderoe spending the majority of your visit to Cuba in Varadero, then I’m sure once you’ve chilled out and relaxed and had a few days on the beach, around the pool or on the golf course, then you’ll be keen to see a little more of Cuba.    There are a variety of places you can visit as a Varadero Day Trip – so here’s our guide to the best place to visit on a day trip from Varadero. Whether you want to enjoy Cuba’s natural reserves or understand more about the staples of Cuba – sugar, rum and cigars there are a number of options available as day trips from Varadero.   As you’re located on the Hicacos peninsular there are also some great day trips from Varadero on boats that you can take.   And then there’s the most popular one, the Varadero to Havana day trip, plus there are options to visit other cities – the nearby Matanzas, famous for being the birthplace of rumba – and a little further afield, Trinidad, Santa Clara and Cienfuegos.  You’re going to need a longer holiday! As with all travel in Cuba, it’s important to look, when you’re planning your day trips from Varadero, not at the distance away from Varadero, but the time it takes to travel there and back.  You can’t apply travel and transit times that you have at home to Cuba.  The Best Varadero Day Trips The top places to visit as a day trip from Varadero are those which will give you a different flavour Varadero, but also those that aren’t too far away – spending hours and hours travelling can eat into your holiday time!  So let's start with our tip picks for Varadero Day Trips with the most popular trip to take from Varadero – a day trip to Havana. Varadero Day Trips to Havana – The best option It will take you around 2 hours each way from Varadero to Havana by private transfer.  (check prices and availability of private transfers to Havana here ).  You can also take the Viazul Bus to Varadero from Havana, but it's not really an option for a day trip – as the bus stations aren’t convenient and neither are the bus times! This private day trip to Havana from Varadero is a great option if you want to see the sights of Havana, but not commit to more than a day.    It is a full 12-hour day trip to Havana.   On pick up from your hotel, you’ll head straight to Havana and right into Old Havana – the capital’s historic centre.  And it won’t be long before you’re surrounded by the charming colonial streets and the stunning classic cars here.  In this full day tour of Havana, you’ll get to see such sights as the Capitol Building, the bars that Ernest Hemingway frequented, Havana port and Morro Castle.  You’ll also get to see the Museum of the Revolution (one of our top things to see in Havana) and you’ll learn about the history of Cuba, from its foundation in the 16th century to the days following the Revolution.  Don’t worry there’s also a break for lunch where you’ll get to experience one of Havana’s paladares (private restaurants) and then it’s on to the more modern Havana – the fashionable neighbourhoods of Vedado and Miramar overlooking Havana’s famous Malecón esplanade.  This day trip to Havana from Varadero also takes in the enormous Plaza de la Revolución Square, where the famous giant portrait of Che Guevara by artist Enrique Ávila is located. Here, we will also admire the elegant Monument to José Martí. At the end of your tour in Havana, you’ll be returned to your hotel in Varadero for a well-earned cocktail or two! Check reviews and reserve your Havana Day Trip Now! Cayo Blanco Catamaran Trip with Lobster Lunch Cayo Blanco is a deserted white sand island with a dreamy beach, getting to it on a sailing catamaran trip from Varadero is a delight.   This is the second most popular day trip from Varadero – sail on the stunning Caribbean sea to a desert island, enjoy a lobster lunch with an open bar.  What’s not to love? On this fabulous sailing trip from Varadero, you’ll be collected from your hotel and then board a luxury catamaran and sail for about two hours, heading for Cayo Blanco.  There’s a coral reef here, so you’ll be able to snorkel and discover Cuba’s marine life, or lie in the sun, or just swim in the stunning sea. Head to Matanzas for a day trip from Varadero + see the Bellamar Caves You can get to Matanzas quite easily – it's around 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Varadero.  The Viazul Bus (see our guide for how these buses work here) runs from Varadero to Matanzas 3 times a day, but it’s not always a good time for making a day trip to Matanzas from Varadero.    You must buy a ticket ahead of time from the Viazul terminal on the corner of Calle 36 and the highway - one block off of the main street. The Puente de Bacunayagua is the highest in Cuba, resting 100 metres near the River Yumuri.   Taking a walk around the centre of Matanzas is interesting – you’ll want to stop at the San Severino Castle Museum where you can take a guided tour of the castle and fortress and understand a little about slavery in Cuba too. (I think it's better than the one in Havana).  Finally, while you’re out this way, I’d recommend including a trip to Bellamar Caves.  They’re some of the biggest and most impressive in the Caribbean (there are more caves also in the Vinales region to explore).   The Bellamar Caves were discovered in 1861 and are about 5 kilometres (3 miles) to the southeast of Matanzas.  Guided tours are available and entry costs around US$8.  An alternative to Bellamar Caves or an addition even is the Cueva de Saturno (Saturn Cave) – it’s a cenote  – which has stalactites, blind cavefish and cave shrimp.  Swimming in the freshwater here is very popular and you can also arrange to dive in the cenote.  Entry costs US$5 and the Cueva de Saturno is 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) from Matanzas. For a great lunch with a fabulous view head to Chef Bahia on the main coast road to Varadero.  If you’re considering a day trip from Varadero to Matanzas, we really do recommend either organising your own itinerary and route, planning it via a private transfer/taxi and making the most of your day in Matanzas or booking a tour which takes you to all the important places.  This tour is a great one that includes all the main attractions. Visit the Yumuri Valley from Varadero The Yumuri Valley is one of Cuba’s most scenic natural areas, it followed the Yumuri River for 54 kilometres (33.5 miles) and is recognised for its biodiversity and archaeological sites. That happens all the time with every carrier. Last time we arrived at 10:30 pm, and left early returning. Check and see if the resort you’re going to has a snack bar, you could get something to eat there when you arrive.

If you have enough vacation days, have you checked to see if ACV has an odd number day vacation?

I usually do my best to get a 10 day vacation which includes 2 weekends just to eliminate the 1st and last day of traveling so I still get my full relaxing time on vacation.

You don't want to stress yourself out on your first night of vacation looking at your watch and hoping to get to the hotel in time for the remainders of the last meal of the day.

Personally have trouble out of bed for any overseas trip of less than 3-4 weeks lol.

7;days less travel time each way sounds crazy. JMHO of course.

Career US diplomat abruptly admits to spying for communist Cuba for decades

A former career U.S. diplomat says he will plead guilty to charges of serving as a secret agent for communist Cuba going back decades

MIAMI -- A former career U.S. diplomat told a federal judge Thursday he will plead guilty to charges of working for decades as a secret agent for communist Cuba , an unexpectedly swift resolution to a case prosecutors called one of the most brazen betrayals in the history of the U.S. foreign service.

Manuel Rocha's stunning fall from grace could culminate in a lengthy prison term after the 73-year-old said he would admit to federal counts of conspiring to act as an agent of a foreign government.

Prosecutors and Rocha’s attorney indicated the plea deal includes an agreed-upon sentence but they did not disclose details at a hearing Thursday. He is due back in court April 12, when he is scheduled to formalize his guilty plea and be sentenced.

“I am in agreement,” said Rocha, shackled at the hands and ankles, when asked by U.S. District Court Judge Beth Bloom if he wished to change his plea to guilty. Prosecutors, in exchange, agreed to drop 13 counts including wire fraud and making false statements.

The brief hearing shed no new light on the question that has proved elusive since Rocha's arrest in December: What exactly did he do to help Cuba while working at the State Department for two decades? That included stints as ambassador to Bolivia and top posts in Argentina, Mexico , the White House and the U.S. Interests Section in Havana.

“Ambassador Rocha,” as he preferred to be called, was well known among Miami's elite for his aristocratic, almost regal, bearing befitting his Ivy League background. His post-government career included time as a special adviser to the commander of the U.S. Southern Command and more recently as a tough-talking Donald Trump supporter and Cuba hardliner, a persona friends and prosecutors say Rocha adopted to hide his true allegiances.

Peter Lapp, who oversaw FBI counterintelligence against Cuba between 1998 and 2005, said the fast resolution of the case benefits not only the elderly Rocha but also the government, which stands to learn a lot about Cuba’s penetration of U.S. foreign policy circles.

Typically in counterintelligence cases, the defendant is charged with espionage. But Rocha was accused of the lesser crimes of acting as a foreign agent, which carry maximum terms of between five and 10 years in prison, making it easier for prosecutors and Rocha to reach an agreement.

“It’s a win-win for both sides,” said Lapp, who led the investigation into Ana Montes, the highest-level U.S. official ever convicted of spying for Cuba. “He gets a significant payoff and the chance to see his family again, and the U.S. will be able to conduct a full damage assessment that it wouldn’t be able to do without his cooperation.”

“There are details that can really only come from the defendant,” he added.

But the abrupt deal drew criticism in the Cuban exile community, with some legal observers worrying it amounted to a slap on the wrist.

“Any sentence that allows him to see the light of day again would not be justice," said Carlos Trujillo, a Miami attorney who served as U.S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States during the Trump administration. “He’s a spy for a foreign adversary who put American lives at risk."

A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.

Rocha was arrested by the FBI at his Miami home on allegations he had engaged in “clandestine activity” on Cuba’s behalf since at least 1981 — the year he joined the U.S. foreign service — including by meeting with Cuban intelligence operatives and providing false information to U.S. government officials about his contacts.

Rocha made a series of recorded admissions to an undercover FBI agent who posed as a Cuban intelligence operative who reached out to Rocha on WhatsApp, calling himself “Miguel” and saying he had a message “from your friends in Havana.”

Rocha praised the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro as “Comandante,” branded the U.S. the “enemy” and bragged about his service for more than 40 years as a Cuban mole in the heart of U.S. foreign policy circles, prosecutors said in court records.

“What we have done … it’s enormous … more than a Grand Slam,” he was quoted as saying.

Federal authorities have said little about what Rocha actually did to aid Cuba, and FBI and State Department investigators have been conducting a confidential intelligence damage assessment that could take years.

But a recent Associated Press investigation found there were plenty of missed red flags over the years.

Those included a tip that a longtime CIA operative received warning in 2006 that Rocha was working as a double agent. It was never pursued. And separate intelligence revealed that the CIA had been aware as early as 1987 that Castro had a “super mole” burrowed deep inside the U.S. government, and some officials suspected it could have been Rocha.

Lawrence Gumbiner, a retired career diplomat, said the fact that Rocha went undetected for so many years underscores the sophistication of Cuba’s intelligence services.

“It’s a day for reflection for all of us who knew and worked with him,” said Gumbiner, who served as acting U.S. ambassador to Cuba in 2017 and 2018. “Although the full extent of the damage he caused isn’t yet revealed, it’s hard to believe he didn’t pass along some very serious information that compromised our intelligence services and our own efforts against the Castro regime.”
