Chapada Diamantina National Park: The Complete Guide

With a landscape full of mesas, magnificent rock formations, and quartzite caves, complete with crystal clear lakes and underground rivers, Chapada Diamantina National Park is the perfect setting for some of the wildest eco-adventures in Brazil. This park is known around the world for its scenic beauty and its history steeped deep in a 19th-century diamond boom. When word got out about this boom, the ensuing diamond rush brought in a slew of prospectors, called garimpeiros, who formed the nearby town of Lençóis as a base for exploring this area. Today, Chapada Diamantina National Park (founded in 1985), or Brazil’s Lost World, encompasses 152,000-hectares (587 square miles) and houses several national monuments. The park's mixed terrain and contrasting topography, as well as an underground water system, attracts those looking to explore the desert wilderness by hiking, spelunking, swimming, and rock climbing.

Things to Do

Before it became a park, the region encompassing Chapada Diamantina National Park was considered off-limits, in an effort to prevent diamond smuggling. But now, the spectacular scenery, which opened the region to tourism, has made it accessible to hikers, bikers, rock climbers, and horseback riders. Combine any one of these activities with a swim in a refreshing waterhole for an adventure-filled day.

This park boasts over 300 kilometers (187 miles) of hiking and horseback riding trails, created by former miners and now maintained by tour guides. The trails take you through the desert, past interesting rock formations and waterfalls, and up and down hills over a varied landscape. Portions of this same trail network can also be accessed by mountain bikers and horseback riders, although an advanced mountain biking skill level is required to tackle them.

Traditional, sport, and bouldering rock climbing routes exist throughout the park on the sandstone rock walls. Some routes even take you up the side of waterfalls. Book a rock climbing excursion with one of the park's hired guides or through a number of different tour agencies. Rappelling and ziplining are also enjoyed activities in this realm.

Highly qualified divers and spelunkers can take advantage of the park's underground caves and lakes. Access to some of these spots is only granted to special groups by environmental protection agencies, however. Still, you can take a plunge in the water at one of the Chapada Diamantina's favored swimming holes, like the Ribeirao do Meio rock slide, the Sossego waterfall, and the Fumaça waterfall (considered Brazil’s highest waterfall until a higher one was discovered in the Amazon).

Extreme adventurists can also engage in the act of free-flying, paragliding, or mountain racing in the park.

Best Hikes & Trails

Chapada Diamantina National Park is a haven for hikers. Explore waterfalls, discover natural rock formations at sunset, and traverse one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. Most hikers hire the service of a local guide, although experienced hikers can tackle most of the trails on their own with a reliable GPS.

  • Morro do Pai Inacio: The hike to this postcard-famous rock outcropping is one of the easiest in the park. It's accessible by the main road, located halfway between Lençois and Capão, and requires a 30-minute hike to the top of the plateau. Go at sunset when the rocky walls reflect the light in a display of mesmerizing orange hues.
  • Cachoeira da Fumaça : This 6.2-mile moderate hike is a must-do for those looking to experience a 420-meter (1,300-foot) high waterfall situated next to an equally tall cliffside. The trail starts at Os Campos in Vale do Capão and takes you on a rugged, sun-exposed climb before plateauing out into a savanna. Most people hire a guide for this hike.
  • Cachoeira do Sossego: This 6.6-mile well-beaten trail can be a dangerous encounter during the rainy season, as it follows a river bed and requires navigating over large rocks and slippery stones. Still, it's a good test of your physical abilities in the dry season—a hike that takes you to a 15-meter (49-foot) canyonside waterfall. On the way back, take the road to Riberão do Meio, where a natural slide cascades into a refreshing pool.
  • Vale do Pati: Considered one of the best hiking trails in Brazil, and often compared to the Inca Trail in Peru, Valedo Pati is a multi-day trek that is often tackled with a guide. It takes you through the jungle, by native villages where the locals may offer you accommodations, and hugs the banks of the river. Sites along the hike include spots like Mirante do Pati (a majestic rainforest valley), Morro do Castelo (a square rock formation), and Cachoeirão por baixo (a box canyon with a waterfall).

Cave Diving

Many spelunkers and divers visit this remote park for its unique underground caves and diving spots. The most famous of the subterranean pools for swimming is Poco Azul, as it can be accessed by regular visitors who hire a guide service. Gruta da Pratinha, approximately 390 feet wide and ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 feet deep, can also be accessed by novice swimmers and divers, as natural stairs descend into a crystal clear lake.

Expertise in both caving and diving is required to access the park's other underground lakes. Os Impossíveis (named so for its difficult entrance) rewards you with 100-foot vertical walls, white stalagmites, and access to various tunnels. Poço Encantado, a 120-foot deep sunken pool, has water so transparent that rocks and ancient tree trunks are visible to the bottom. When the sun is just right, light comes through a crevice and creates a blue reflection on the water. (Access to this pond is highly controlled for the environmental protection of its rare and delicate ecosystem.) Poço de Milú (the Enchanted Well), is similar to the Poço Encantado but less restricted. Underwater passageways abound.

Where to Camp

Due to the remote nature of this park, most of the private campsites in the area are located in the surrounding towns within a one- or two-hour drive. These campsites make a great resting point if you're tackling the seven-hour drive from Salvador. However, backcountry camping is permitted inside the park, if you organize a trek with a hired guide service .

  • Camping Mucuge : Located in the town of Mucuge (approximately two hours away from Chapada Diamantina), this campground offers the most amenities in the region. The facilities have tent sites, as well as spaces for motorhomes and campers, complete with power, water, and sewage hookups. Hot showers, a communal bathroom and kitchen, a library, and free Wi-Fi are all available on-site.
  • Camping Ganesha : Slightly closer to the park in Capao (within a 1.5-hour drive to the park), Camping Ganesha gets rave reviews. It boasts a common kitchen area and bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and trees that bear fruit ripe for the picking.

Where to Stay Nearby

There are many lodging options available in the small towns and villages surrounding Chapada Diamantina National Park. Choose from an all-inclusive luxury stay, complete with a guided experience, a modest hotel, or a DIY adventure stay in a fully-equipped chalet—all within a short drive of the park.

  • Pousada Villa Lagoa das Cores : Located 12.9 miles away from the park, Pousada Villa Lagoa das Cores is surrounded by mountains and offers a luxury stay, complete with a holistic spa and a sophisticated restaurant that offers contemporary cuisine. Treat yourself to a room or suite, where no attention to detail is spared. The hotel also offers retreats and experiences with professional guides for a full-service vacation.
  • Chapada Hotel : Chapada Hotel is located 11.5 miles away from Chapada Diamantina and offers a modest stay with luxury apartments, super luxury apartments, and executive apartments, complete with box spring beds, televisions, and air conditioning. This no-frills hotel also features an outdoor pool and an a la carte restaurant with room service.
  • Pousada Bela Vista do Capão : This lodging option is located in Campos, about 13.4 miles away from the park. Here, you can stay in a fully-equipped chalet, complete with a full kitchen, modern bathroom, double and single beds, and a balcony overlooking Capão Valley. This high-altitude retreat receives a gentle breeze year-round and is the perfect option for those who want to be fully independent.

How to Get There

If you're traveling to this park by air, international and domestic airlines fly to Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, and then connect to Salvador, where you can take a local commuter flight to Lençóis. You can also hire a taxi service to take you from Salvador to Lencois on a seven-hour journey. A travel agency can make the arrangements for you, or you can book directly through the Lençóis Taxi Drivers Association.

If you are traveling from Salvador, you can take one of two daily buses to Andaraí, Mucugê, Ibicoara, Utinga, and Seabra, operated by the Real Expresso line. It's about a seven-hour trip and approximately 267 miles. You can also make the trek by car, which will allow you more freedom on your journey, as well as the convenience of having a car once you arrive.

Tips for Your Visit

  • The climate of Chapada Diamantina makes it an all-season destination, but evening storms provide almost seven feet of rainfall a year.
  • Once the third-largest town in the northeast state of Bahia, Lençóis is now much smaller and is mainly tourist-oriented. You can arrange park tours here yourself, or ask your hotel for help with planning.
  • As the gateway to the Chapada Diamantina National Park, Lençóis has plentiful restaurants and cantinas where you can sip Brazilian beer and trade stories with the locals to learn about the best climbing spots, swimming holes, and cave diving.
  • If you're embarking on a guided trek, make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and pack along a waterproof layer and sunblock.
  • Chapada Diamantina is a remote wilderness area, therefore, some visitors may find it essential to hire a guide who is familiar with the region and trained in first aid. A guide will also enrich your trip with information about the region's fauna, flora, geology, and history.

Chapada Diamantina National Park ( Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina ) is in the center of the state of Bahia in Brazil .

Understand [ edit ]

History [ edit ].

The national park was created in 1985 to protect Serra do Cincorá and to attract growing number of ecotourists.

Landscape [ edit ]

parque nacional da chapada diamantina tours

This scenery mountain range includes mountains, valleys, monoliths, caves, rivers and waterfalls. Highest parts of the park raise over 2000 m above sea level (average being 1000 m above sea level) and offer breathtaking views. The area is about 400 km inland, west of Salvador in Bahia state in the Northeast region of Brazil in the middle of the dry sertão (back-country plains).

It is an important water source with many rivers starting here. These rivers make incredible waterfalls as they fall off the vertical walls of the mountains. The vegetation is of open grassy fields with isolated trees (similar to the African savannah) with some thicker vegetation along the rivers.

Flora and fauna [ edit ]

At the top of the flat top hills the vegetation is particularly weird and fantastic. Wildlife is not very easy to spot. Apart from humming birds and vultures you are unlikely to see the anteaters or jaguars which live here.

Climate [ edit ]

Get in [ edit ].

You can start from Lençóis , by plane from São Paulo and Salvador or bus from Salvador (Real Expresso - R$72). Coaches are clean, comfortable (good reclining seats) and air conditioned. The bus’ suspension also deals with the potholes and lumps better than a car’s. There’s a conductor and a driver aboard. Depending on season, there may be one or two services every day between Salvador and Lençois. Just check the departure times in the apps of Clickbus or Buscaonibus.

If the departure times from Salvador or the arrival times in Palmeiras do not fit for you, you can take a bus to Seabra and change the bus there to Palmeiras.

From Brasilia there are buses, too. You can depart in the afternoon and arrive in the late morning in Seabra. It costs around R$170 (Feb 2021). There you may have to walk six minutes to another intercity bus station. Just ask where you arrive. The bus to Palmeiras is for R$7 and to Lençois R$15 (Feb 2021). The app from Buscaonibus shows all operating bus companies on this route with their departure times.

Another option is to go to Vale do Capão which is at walking distance of many places of interest, and more quiet than Lençóis.

Fees and permits [ edit ]

As of Apr 2015 the NP has not been established, and they won't charge you to enter it

Get around [ edit ]

Guides and travel agencies tend to be quite overpriced in Lençóis and Vale do Capão . As of January 2017 the average cost of a 1 day tour from Lençóis is about R$200.

See [ edit ]

parque nacional da chapada diamantina tours

The best sights and experiences will be found on walks into the mountains. These can be short excursions (eg to see the Fumaça waterfall) or longer treks such as a 4-5 day Capão and Pati Valley hike.

  • Cachoeira da Fumaça - the highest waterfall (380 m) of Brazil is so high that the water never hits the ground. It vaporizes in the air by the force of the wind and sun. Access usual from guided tours starting in Lençóis that make the whole trip to and from, or using Vale do Capão , but if starting from Vale do Capão, walk 3km from the main village, get to the entrance, pay a donation (they won't force you), they will offer you a guide, but it is an easy 2-hour walk, with only two places where the trail forks (pay attention). Start in the early morning (best if hot season) and you will be back for lunch.
  • Cachoeira do Sossego - another spectacular waterfall easily accessible from Lençóis .
  • The caverns of Lapa Doce and Pratinha - a must for cave enthusiasts.
  • Poço Encantado - Enchanted Pool with incredibly blue water (entrance 20 Rs).
  • Poço Azul - Snorkeling in the incredibly blue water for R$15.

Do [ edit ]

Buy [ edit ], eat [ edit ].

Godó de banana is a must try when visiting Chapada Diamantina. It's a dish created by the prospectors of diamonds who first inhabited the region and consists of: unripe cooked bananas, different types of meat (including sausage, dry/jerked beef and bacon), tomatoes, parsley and spring onions.

You find specific restaurants in the articles of Vale do Capão and Lençóis .

Drink [ edit ]

Sleep [ edit ], lodging [ edit ].

Lençois is the most developed town in the Chapada Diamantina thanks to its accessible position and to its history as a wealthy mining and trading town in the 19th century and beyond. If you stay at the very pretty Hotel Canto dos Aguas, it’s a 2-minute walk into the town, crossing a smart bridge into the town square (Praça Nagôs).

Since commercial agriculture and mining is now banned in the National Park, the remaining handful of families in the Pati Valley make a living providing accommodation to hikers. They are basic, but impressive in the circumstances and more comfortable and responsible than camping. Maps of the Chapada have the few houses marked on it and labeled with the names of their inhabitants.

A couple of cheap pousadas are also available in Palmeiras, but there is not much point of staying here. Better head straight to Vale do Capão. Jeeps do the trip for R$15 usually.

Vale do Capão has many places to stay for all budgets. If you fancy camping you can stay at the Pousada Sempre Viva, you get plenty of room for your tent, plus cement bungalows and cheap rooms with toilet. You can haggle for longer stays. A bunk bed in a dormitory there is for R$50 per night (March 2021).

Camping [ edit ]

Inside the National Park in the Vale do Paty trail you can do camping in locals houses, they will give you firewood and the kitchen to use.

Otherwise you can camp anywhere else, but beware of camping close to a river, because of flash floods. A few people have drowned already.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Evening storms are quite frequent in the area.

10 Things to Know Before Visiting Chapada Diamantina

Poço Azul Chapada Diamantina

Chapada Diamantina is one of Brazil’s most glorious national parks, with plenty of options for hiking and trekking through gorgeous valleys, mountain plateaus, and enchanting caves. Before you go, check out our top 10 tips to make the most of your trip.

Guides are a must..

Chapada Diamantina has plenty of trails to explore, but many of them are unmarked or have an unclear route, so regardless if you speak Portuguese or are an avid hiker, you’ll need help. Avoid the stress of getting lost in the wilderness without cell service and hire a guide. This is especially important for overnight treks. In addition to keeping you from getting lost, your guide can arrange stays in local homes if you’re not the camping type.

Chapada Diamantina

Your hotel can help.

Morrão – Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina

Comparing and negotiating prices is normal.

Tour agencies will certain have their set prices, but Brazilians are often comfortable with bargaining, so it may be worth trying. Note that arranging for a private guide should be more affordable than an agency as there’s no commission fee. Remember to be respectful but firm.

Cachoeira do Buracão

Local towns make convenient home bases.

A few small towns near the park offer travelers what need to start their exploring. The most popular is Lençóis, an old mining town with cobblestone streets and old mountain charm—with a Brazilian twist, of course. Plenty of tour companies set up excursions around the area. Approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) south is Vale do Capão with another small town called Caete-Açu, which has a slight hippie feel. This spot is closer to the park, making it easier for one-day excursions, but it is a little less structured than Lençóis. Either town is a suitable base for getting out and seeing Chapada Diamantina in all its glory.

Parque Nacional Chapada Diamantina

The park is larger than some European countries.

The benefits of the park’s enormous size is there’s something to please everyone. The downside: it’s so large you will probably want a car to get around. Hitchhiking is an option, but it’s an unreliable one. Consider going with friends to offset the cost of a rental car and to get a better group deal on tour opportunities . Often single travelers may not be able to arrange a guide just to take one person, so the more the merrier.

Travel with Friends

You probably won’t see everything.

Chapada Diamantina is a national park of epic proportions. It’s larger than some countries and covers diverse land. It’s home to the largest number of caves and waterfalls in all of Brazil and can leave an explorer feeling lost as to what to see first. Take time to consider what you really want to see, whether its the mountain views or the valley trails. Maybe cave diving is at the top of your list—or a multi-day camping trek. You may not have time to see it all, but whatever you see will be memorable.

Sunset at Chapada

Th underground is just as dazzling.

Many of Chapada Diamantina’s best-known views are atop a plateau with sweeping valley view, but the area is also home to an astonishing number of Brazil’s caves, some with super-clear, still waters that can be explored with specialty swimming or diving tours. The deep blue color of the water makes for a #nofilter kind of photo.

Poço Azul

Chapada can get pretty cold.

Although Brazil is known for its bronzing beaches , Chapada Diamantina is far from the coast, and temperatures can drop quickly, particularly at higher altitudes. Pack in layers and prepare for sun, rain, and cooler temps. Pack sunscreen, bug spray, and a water bottle for hikes, and most importantly, wear comfortable shoes.

Pack a hat

Preparing yourself (and your feet) beforehand is essential.

Speaking of shoes, for those not accustomed to hiking, it’s best to start prepping well before arriving in Chapada Diamatina. Take some long walks or practice hikes while carrying the weight you plan to have on the trails, whether that’s a small backpack or full camping pack, and wear the shoes you plan to bring on the trip to break them in. You’ll be better suited to enjoy all those stunning vistas if you’re not sweating it.

Hiking Shoes

Cell service is unreliable.

Another reason to have a guide is the lack of connectivity. Your guide will be able to make arrangements for you sans cell service, which is essential in the park. Of course, there will be an extraordinary amount of opportunities to take Instagram-worthy shots on a trip to Chapada Diamantina, so definitely bring a camera. But know that cell phone service in the park is spotty at best, so save your Snaps for another time. This is the perfect opportunity to leave your phone on airplane mode for a bit, disconnect, and enjoy nature without distraction.

Chiselled bluffs of windswept limestone rise overhead, and precipitous cliffs draped in a shroud of mossy grass serrate the horizon; flat-topped plateaus lie peppered with lichen-dotted rocks and gnarled thorn bushes sway in the highland breezes. All the while, the elusive silhouettes of Brazilian jaguars and armoured armadillos weave between the cactus groves, Snakes hiss, and tropical birds issue a cacophony of squawks and sounds into the orchid-scented air.

In a land of such majestic natural beauty, it’s hardly surprising that the Brazilian government has chosen to treasure this region’s environmental wonders over its subterranean wealth of diamonds and gold. Where mechanised mines were once planned, travellers can now hike meandering trails to eye-watering sights like the Cachoeira da Fumaca, the highest waterfall in the country that spouts plumes of mist and steam across the ridges of the Sincora Range. Others enlist a Chapada Diamantina National Park tour guide from the charming town of Lencois to help them case out the deep caverns of Lapa Doce, or the mirror-like pool of Poco Encantado, or then simply lose themselves between the soaring canyons and waterways of Cachoeira do Buracao—wildlife spotting, stargazing and entirely given over to the indelible call of the wild.

Chapada Diamantina National Park ( Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina ) is in the center of the state of Bahia in Brazil.

Flora and fauna

At the top of the flat top hills the vegetation is particularly weird and fantastic. Wildlife is not very easy to spot. Apart from humming birds and vultures you are unlikely to see the anteaters or jaguars which live here.

The best sights and experiences will be found on walks into the mountains. These can be short excursions (eg to see the Fumaça waterfall) or longer treks such as a 4-5 day Capão and Pati Valley hike.

  • Cachoeira da Fumaça – the highest waterfall (380 m) of Brazil is so high that the water never hits the ground. It vaporizes in the air by the force of the wind and sun. Access usual from guided tours starting in Lençóis that make the whole trip to and from, or using Vale do Capão, but if starting from Vale do Capão, walk 3km from the main village, get to the entrance, pay a donation (they won’t force you), they will offer you a guide, but it is an easy 2-hour walk, with only two places where the trail forks (pay attention). Start in the early morning (best if hot season) and you will be back for lunch.
  • Cachoeira do Sossego – another spectacular waterfall easily accessible from Lençóis.
  • Cachoeira do Buracão – …and another.
  • The caverns of Lapa Doce and Pratinha – a must for cave enthusiasts.
  • Poço Encantado – Enchanted Pool with incredibly blue water
  • Poço Azul – Snorkeling in the incredibly blue water

parque nacional da chapada diamantina tours

  • BobSt23 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Adventure in Brazil There are many attractions located around the town of Lencois, 5 hours inland from Salvador in Brazil. We were part of a private tour with Discover Chapada Turismo (through the tourHQ website), which also included pick-up from Lencois airport, entrance fees, transport to our chosen attractions and transfer by car back to Salvador (no flight on the day we left). This cost us $US1600. We had the same guide for the 4 days, an Austrian ex-pat named Peter. Peter did an excellent job driving us around in his old beat-up Chevrolet hatch-back. The roads are often awful and I couldn’t believe his car would make the distance, but it did. It wasn’t very comfortable though, so perhaps the company should have supplied a 4-wheel drive for the benefit of its guests. Peter did drive us each night from the hotel we were staying at in Valle du Capao to the village of Caete-Acu (4 kilometres but 20 minutes from due to the shocking road) for dinner, something he wasn’t obliged to do, which was very generous. I had planned the itinerary and Discover Chapada Turismo went with it and ensured all locations on my list were visited, with a couple of extra sites along the way. Overall we were pleased with the tour and we definitely would recommend the company to handle your needs if visiting the Lencois region. The places we visited were: Fumaca waterfall – this involves a 2-hour hike there and another 2 hours return. The first section is 2 kilometres uphill, but the climb is gradual and manageable. The views of Capao Valley are great from the top of the hill. Then it’s 4 kilometres basically flat walking across the plateau to the Fumaca lookouts. It’s a good hike and worth the effort. It’s not always easy as the trail consists of short tracks seemingly connecting water courses that become the trail. It is possible to do without a guide, though there are a few “which way?” moments. There are no safety fences at the waterfall so don’t get too close to the 300 metre sheer cliffs. There is a ledge for keen hikers with no fear of heights. The descent back down the hill takes as long as the climb, due to the slippery surfaces. When it rains, this descent would be treacherous. Take the weather into account if heading off on this excursion. Lapa Doce cave – this is a strange one. I expected a hole you could walk into, look around and walk out again. It is actually a long network of caves, with a one-kilometre section open to the public. To actually walk through the cave, you need a guide who will hand you flashlights to shine the path through and illuminate cave formations. This makes it an unusual cave tour as there is no lighting in the cave. I personally think that would be a better idea because there is only so much you can see by torch light. There are many formations along the route, underwhelming in the low light. All in all, if pressed for time, I would probably leave this attraction off my list of places to visit. Rianchinho Waterfall – closer to the Fumaca trail in Capao Valley, this is a swimming hole at the base of a wide cascading waterfall. The water is almost black from the minerals in the pool, making it not exactly visually appealing. The water is also cold, which would be best on a hot day. It’s a very pretty scene and could be a good option returning along the road from Fumaca. Inacio Lookout – From the car park, this lookout is a steep climb to the top of the highest point in Chapada Diamantina. From here, there are 360-degree views of the park and the lower valleys. There are sheer drops all around so don’t get too close to the edge. This excursion doesn’t take too long and isn’t a bad extra. Pratinha – one of the highlights of the park region is this river, which flows from a cave, making the water crystal clear, unlike all the other red-tinged rivers in the region. There are touristy options such as floating into the cave, a flying fox which lands you in the water, swan boats to navigate the river downstream and a basic swimming area in the clear water accessed by a ramp beside the restaurant-bar. The water is not as cold as you’d expect. This should not be missed. Enchanted Well and Blue Well– these attractions are in the western region of Lencois town, so require a separate day to experience fully. Enchanted Well is a hole in a cave with a blue lake. People descend a pathway with helmets fitted with lights. I wondered why helmets were necessary until a person exiting the cave banged hers on the cave ceiling. Only a small number of people are allowed in at a time. When the viewing area is reached, people sit on the rocks and extinguish their lights. The crystal-clear blue lake is revealed, with its perfect reflections of the cave wall. When the sun shines in through the cave entrance, part of the lake turns bright turquoise, a truly magnificent sight. The guides offer to take photos with your phone and though you would think they wouldn’t be that good, they know what they’re doing, illuminating you with their head lamps and still capturing the blue lake behind. After some time admiring the view, people are led back up to the entrance. If travelling from the Enchanted Well to the Blue Well (which is highly recommended), you travel along one of the region’s usual shocking gravel roads until you arrive at a river just preceding the Blue Well tourist park. The only way across the river is by ferry, controlled by hand! One car at a time, the ferryman literally pulls you across the river using cables and the river’s current. The difference between the wells is that in the Blue Well, you are actually allowed to float in the water in the pool inside the cave. After a cold shower to wash away sunscreens and dirt, you are given a life jacket and led into the cave. Small groups of about 10 at a time step into the blue water and float in the perfectly acceptable 24 degrees temperature and gaze into the depths of the pool with supplied goggles. The sun shines into the cave during the middle hours of the day, enhancing the otherworldly experience. The 2 wells are amazing and should be top of the list if visiting Lencois. There are other hikes and waterfalls we didn’t have the time to go to. Chapada Diamantina and its surrounding region is not high on tourist itineraries as it’s a bit out of the way. But if you are going to Brazil, add some days to your trip and seriously consider diverting to Lencois. Check out my other reviews of places, hotels and experiences throughout South America. If you want to see a flip side to surf-and-sand Bahia, or have time for only one excursion into the Northeastern interior, this is it. Lençóis is the prettiest of the old diamond-mining towns in the Chapada Diamantina, a mountainous wooded oasis in the dusty sertão (backlands of the Northeast). While the town itself has charming cobbled streets, brightly painted 19th-century buildings, and appealing outdoor cafes and restaurants, the surrounding areas are the real attractions. Caves, waterfalls, idyllic rivers and panoramic plateaus set the stage for some fantastic adventures, with the town of Lençóis serving as a base for treks into the Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina and for sights outside the park.
