We love wine. We love to travel. Our trips now seem to gravitate toward incredible wine destinations . Douro Valley in Portugal was one of them. With its mesmerizing steeply terraced vineyards, scenic windy roads, and a meandering river, Douro Valley is a do-not-miss attraction! In order to visit several of Portugal’s wineries in one day, I would strongly suggest booking a Douro Valley wine tour. That way you can enjoy the lovely wine without worrying about driving.    

We chose Douro Exclusive. Here’s why and what to expect from their wine tour.

There are a lot of Douro Valley Wine Tours that are marketed as day tours to and from Porto.

That is a long day!

After traveling around the world and staying in Franschhoek in South Africa , Goriska Brda in Slovenia , and Willamette Valley in Oregon, we now love planning MULTIPLE DAYS in wine destinations.

I strongly recommend staying in Douro Valley for several days. Although Douro Exclusive does make the long drive back and forth from Porto, they also offer to pick up and drop off in Douro Valley.

Would you rather be transported 80 – 105 minutes each way from Porto?

Or would you rather stay in Douro Valley with sweeping panoramic views, sleep in, and be at your first winery in 20 minutes? Hmmm …

This brings me to my fourth reason for choosing Douro Exclusive. They own Casa do Arco , which is an incredible 3-bedroom boutique hotel perched on a hill right in the heart of wine country.

We stayed there for two nights. Douro Exclusive picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel. We had a lovely dry-aged steak dinner after our wine tour.

My husband and I were able to sleep in and have a lovely breakfast at Casa do Arco before our wine tour. Breakfast included croissants, homemade bread, cheese, charcuterie, fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola.

Sandra picked us up promptly at 10:30 AM, and we were off to the first wine tasting of the day at Fonseca.

She stopped at the vineyard right before we entered the property and showed us all the common Portuguese varietals such as Touriga Nacional.

You can experience Fonseca wine at Vila Nova de Gaia in Porto or at Quinta do Panascal in Douro Valley, which is what we did.

Fonseca is well known in the wine world for its highly acclaimed vintage ports.

Before our tasting, we walked around the grounds and saw the “lagares,” which are granite tanks used for fermentation. The workers will tread the grapes by foot for hours at a time during harvest season.

If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend watching A Year in Port on Amazon Prime. It’s a great documentary on the complexities of making port in the Douro Valley in Portugal.

We enjoyed two lovely glasses of a ruby port and tawny sitting outdoors on the patio.

The scenery is stunning. As far as the eye can see, you see one steeply terraced vineyard after another hugging the Douro River.

After our wine tasting, Sandra drove us over to the town of Pinhão for a cruise down the Douro River.

The cruise was a fun way to see all the vineyards on the banks of the river.

We happened to go on a day when the weather was perfect.

Sunny, warm but not hot, and super clear skies.

While we were enjoying our time on the water, Sandra surprised us with a tasting of a delicious tawny made by one of the staff’s family members. Obrigada!

All that wine tasting certainly worked up an appetite. We had a fantastic meal at a local restaurant, Toca da Raposa, which serves authentic Portuguese cuisine.

The waiter will ask about your food preferences and go as adventurous as you like. For example, we tried potatoes and wild boar, which was surprisingly not gamey.

The Portuguese love their potatoes, and they do them extremely well.

We also had some local sausages, soup, bacalhau na broa (cod in bread), and a delicious dessert sampler. All of these traditional dishes were paired with DOC Douro Wines.

The restaurant is run by a husband and wife team. The wife cooks in the back, and the husband works the front of the house. The service was incredibly warm and inviting.

DON’T MISS : Toca da Raposa makes their own homemade jams, which are served at breakfast at Casa do Arco with your freshly baked bread. We had the orange jam, which was bursting with a delicious citrus flavor. We loved it so much that we bought a jar to take back home with us.

Our last wine tasting of the day was at Quinta do Cume.

Quinta do Cume is a passion project started by surgeon, Jorge Tenreiro. He sought out specific soil content, water proximity, and the right altitude in order to create his unique high-quality wines specific to the terroir.

We had a personal tour of the property by one of the staff members who was working towards taking over the winemaking in the future.

After our informative tour, we were led outdoors to enjoy our wine tasting overlooking the vineyards.

My husband and I were led through a lovely tasting of their DOC Douro reds and whites as we snacked on some fresh homemade bread and their own olive oil.

We particularly enjoyed and purchased their Touriga Nacional, Grande Reserva, and Vintage Port 2019.

We joined the Back to the Douro Roots wine tour, which was 210€ per person for the small group tour.

FOODIE TIP : The Immersive Douro Experience takes you to DOC for lunch, which is a restaurant run by the Michelin-starred Chef Rui Paula.

We didn’t dine at DOC but instead, we experienced his amazing seafood dishes at his 2-star Michelin restaurant Casa de Chá da Boa Nova  in Porto.

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova has probably one of the most beautiful restaurant settings I have ever been to. It’s perched on the rocks seaside. If you are lucky enough to snag a reservation at the right time, you can witness a spectacular sunset as you savor each bite of your elegantly presented tasting menu.

If you want to experience some of the best wineries Douro Valley has to offer with an incredibly knowledgeable guide who will feel like a friend at the end, then book your wine tour with Douro Exclusive.

Although they do offer pickup/drop off from Porto, I strongly suggest spending several nights out in Douro Valley at their boutique hotel, Casa do Arco .

For example, I did find a tour Douro Valley Private Tour with a Sommelier on Viator that may offer a high-quality experience. There’s not many reviews (11), but all gave 5 stars. From what I understand, João, who runs the tour used to be the sommelier at Six Senses Douro Valley. Again, I have no direct experience with his tour, but from what I read it might be similar to the experience provided by Douro Exclusive.

This tour will show the historical importance of the Douro Region , not only for the wine-making process but also for the Portuguese identity!

The tour will start with a pick-up at your hotel ( *optional) . if you don't choose this option, the guide will meet you at Living Tours office). Travel comfortably towards the Douro Valley , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An enchanted valley, where the green and the gold blend perfectly with the river course. Undoubtedly, it can be said that the Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful areas of the world - feel the Nature in its purest state!

As you will learn on this full-day guided tour, the Douro Region has enormous importance for the wine culture  for its outstanding wines, including  Port Wines . For more than 2.000 years, Port Wine has been produced in the Douro by traditional landholders.

Our first stop is in Amarante. This city became very important after Saint Gonçalo's arrival (1187-1259) - one of the most renowned saints in Christian history . He settled himself here after his pilgrimage through Rome and Jerusalem, making this city an important religious stop in Portugal . You may visit the convent and church, but also observe its beautiful bridge over the Tamega river or explore its beautiful historic center.

Our day will continue to one of the most surprising spots of this tour: the Galafura viewpoint . Also known as São Leonardo da Galafura viewpoint, this place will take your breath away. 6 Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . 1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. 5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

Travel Train

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit Pinhão train station, built in 1937. Pinhão is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in Pinhão. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

Shiels: Rare port tasting at Dusty’s Cellar in Okemos may trigger your trip to Portugal

If you are fortunate to have been to Portugal, a rare port tasting at Dusty’s Cellar, in Okemos at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4 may transport your taste buds back. If you have not visited the popular, old world European destination, the once-in-a-lifetime sip of a 136-year-old vintage port served that night might have you booking your trip.

“I traveled with my family to an oceanside resort in Portugal when I was a teenager,” said Dusty’s Cellar proprietor Matt Rhodes. “My only wine memory was my dad Dusty buying it in bulk from the roadside.” 

Only 16 seats, at $325-per person, are currently available for tasting, which will be hosted by Dusty’s Cellars sommelier Jeremy Duggan. Charcuterie will be served while Duggan presents four Quinta do Vallado ports, including the 1888 vintage, a bottle of which retails for $5,000. Only 933 bottles were produced of the rare port, which will be poured from a Portuguese, hand-made replica of the crystal decanter used by Antonio Bernardo Ferreira I when he welcomed German Prince Frederich de Hesse-Cassel to the Quinta do Vallado estate, which ABF purchased in 1818.

Dusty’s guests will also sample a 20-year-old tawny port; and a fine, late bottled vintage from 2018, for comparison. Port, sweet and fortified, typically with berry, chocolate, caramel, and nut flavors, is usually served after dinner in smaller glasses. Tawny ports tend to have less sweetness. 

Quinto do Vallado, established in 1716, is one of the oldest estates in northern Portugal’s Douro Valley, one of the port winery destinations advised for tourists by “Made for Spain & Portugal,” the most connected custom tour provider in the region.

Irurita’s advice led me to the medieval village of Sintra and its castle where I sampled white port for the first time in the shadow of the National Palace of Sintra with the Palace of Pena on the horizon above. I felt as if I were in a storybook.

I stayed, in Sintra, at the historic, 1787, ornate, 29-room Tivoli Palacio de Seteais royal hotel where I luxuriated in its scenic gardens and spa.

My walk outside the hotel gates to Quinta do Regaleira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was an unforgettable and magical experience. The wooded pathways and castle ruins, Italian fountains, chapel and ponds are enchanting.

Back in Lisbon, Tivoli’s 80-year-old hotel, the Avenida Liberdade, serves port overlooking oceanfront Portugal’s capital, with its shops, museums, dining and dramatic, traditional Fado music sessions.

“Port wine is, little by little, getting a big place in the world,” said Irurita. “I love having a porto tonic at sunset overlooking the city of Porto and the Douro River as it flows into the Atlantic.”
