Splendor of Sicily 8 Days Tour - from Catania

This was our 6th bus tour but first for Tourradar. It was excellent because good standard of hotel, which were also centrally located. Was given adequate free time so we were not always rushing. Day start time were good. Included breakfast dinner and some lunch all good Sicily plenty to see wonderful place BUT difficult for group with 3 languages so info was rushed and difficult to follow Plus Tour leader treated up as sheep do not ask why but just follow me and accept. Prefer to be given option eg follow me how long how far and why . Also tourradar excellent response time to questions. Roberto & Debbie

1st nite was awful .no proper welcome. Put in a basement of Il Principe fr dinner very slow service food was awful..cold and boring.air con also broken. Making arancini shoulf have staryed earlier. Dinner was very late. 3rd day we were dumped fr 2 hrs at shopping outlet in the middle of nowhere. No one was interested in designer goods. Skip it and give us more time in Cefalu. Not enough time there to explore. Cheese tasting in Ragusa was fiasco. Forced to leave by other tour guide Daniela after 5 mins even though we had bought wine to drink. In Marsala we had to wait fr Daniela group half an hr. Cut our tasting short. Last night dinner no alternative to fish except salad. Not satisfactory.

I took the Best of Sicily Tour with TourRadar. We had a small group of 5. It was fantastic. We had a different tour guide each day but one. They were all very knowledgeable, well educated in their fields of study, and answered all our questions and more! They made sure that the restaurants were well aware of those of us with food allergies. Communication with TourRadar and Click Tours before and during the trip was easy and they responded immediately to any questions or concerns. I will use them again!

Sicilian Secrets - Tour of Sicily 6 days 2024 Tour

Sicilian Secrets - Tour of Sicily 6 days 2024

The tour guide, Placido, was excellent as well as the bus driver. They had good rapport with the group. We saw amazing sights, the accommodations were good, especially in Agrigento, and the commentary was good. Some things to improve: it should be highlighted that this is a WALKING tour and requires some mobility. We had three people who were challenged daily and the group was significantly slowed down as a result; also, there should be better communication between the tour company and cities and provinces about local events which might hinder the passage of the tour bus. (In our case it was a cycling race, which made it impossible to cross the road to our destination of Marsala and a wine tasting.) ; and finally, each day there were additional costs to get into sights. Each day it should be mentioned which places are optional and at what cost. We have already mentioned the tour to people we have met with good reviews but the above improvements would make it even better.

New Tour of Sicily from Palermo 10 Days Tour

New Tour of Sicily from Palermo 10 Days

You say the tour is suitable for those aged 18 to 90. Our guide walked so fast in temperatures of at least 29 degrees that it was hard to keep up with her. We asked her to slow down, others also asked her including two ladies in their 20s who said they didn't want to power walk through the towns and sites. Valentina left behind one of the group when we caught the shuttle in Caltagirone Four of us were lost in Ortigia when she stormed ahead to the restaurant and we got to a bend in the road and she and the others had completely disappeared. She had allowed her Whisper to run down so she was unable to talk to us and give us directions. It was left to a couple of the group to retrace their steps and eventually find us. We didn't do the honey or oil tasting and Valentina didn't want to be bothered to organize the optional night visit of Ragusa, claiming that she didn't want to charge us any extra money but most of us were rather disappointed. Her knowledge at the sites was good. The two Mercure hotels were quite good and probably worthy of four stars but the two Best Western ones were only up to three star standard. It should be made completely clear that entrance to all of the sites is NOT included.

Splendours of Sicily Tour

Splendours of Sicily

This tour is a comprehensive tour of Sicily. You see a lot. There is a lot of walking - at least 10 km per day and some of it is uneven terrain and stairs. The accommodations were good, all 4 star for Europe (which is not the same as in North America). The meals were decent. This tour was advertised as English speaking but in reality it was tri-lingual (English, Italian and Spanish). Some of the free time was during siesta hours and nothing was open. Where there should have been more free time was in Cefalu and Taormina so you could go to the beach. The bus driver Angelo was excellent. City taxes and excursions were extra out of pocket expenses.

The trip was well organized. The guide - Placido certainly knew his subjects and was very happy to answer questions. The accomodation was all very good as were the breakfasts. .The group was large and I didn't realise that when I booked. Our guide, Placido, was excellent... very knowledgable, cheerful and professional. The hotels and food were good, and our group - mostly a mix of US and Italians - were very friendly. The tour very 'full on' - with a definite timetable in order to see so much in a week. I think we could have a bit more about the history of the towns as well as all the cathedrals.

Reviews of Agrigento Tours

Sicily I amazing. Sicily Activities gave us an excellent tour. It was very personalized, particularly taking into account the needs of our 82 year old mom. The pace was slow as she needed it to be. They even rented an electric wheelchair for her, at no extra cost and the guides helped us carry it. We loved the overall experience.
The tour was beyond my expectations! I will recommend this company to my friends to let them discoer the beautiful Sicily

This place does truly exist and you can find this and more in a town on Sicily’s coastline called Agrigento.

The archaeological site of the “Valley of the Temples” is one of the most well-preserved Greek archaeological sites in Italy. Agrigento is also a city which has a rich history, it dates back to 581 BC, when it was originally established as the city of “Akragas” by early colonists from Gela.

Since then it has endured numerous conquests and sackings and its diverse Carthaginian, Arabic, Greek and Roman roots are reflected in all aspects of the city and surroundings.

Though the silent and majestic ruins on the top of the cliff appear peaceful, it was first ravaged several times by the Carthaginians a until it was captured and conquered by Romans in 210 BC.

Agrigento is a paradise for history buffs who can explore seven Doric temples including the Temple of Zeus and Hera as well as the stunning Sanctuaries of Demeter and Persephone.

There is plenty to do in Agrigento and a full day is recommended to explore the city and surrounding areas properly. Aside from the Greek ruins, the city of Agrigento boasts buildings from different periods of its rich history, a cathedral, gothic monastery and church from more recent history.

There are some delightful towns in the region that can be reached by car. The nearby town of Sciacca is the perfect place to take in the atmosphere of a typical Italian coastal fishing village or even have a spa treatment and relax in the natural thermal baths.

You can spend the day wandering through the narrow alleyways that are reminiscent of the region’s Arabian influence. Though the city appears a bit neglected and poor and has a reputation for being home of the Sicilian mafia, the city is relatively safe but you need to be aware of pickpockets.

For cinema buffs, the famous Teatro Massimo served as the backdrop for the finale of the Godfather III and is one of the most photographed sites in the city.

Amongst the attractions of Palermo which can be explored on foot during a day trip are the various churches and cathedrals of the city, the Cappella Palatina or Palentine Chapel.

The magnificent Palazzo dei Normanni, and even descend into some gloomy catacombs at the Catacombe Dei Cappuccini, where over 8,000 people including Cappuchin friars from the 17 th century buried here.

No trip to Palermo would be complete without visiting the different squares, the stunning fountain in the centre of Piazza Pretoria, before heading down to the piazza Marina and taking in the sights of the oldest port in the city, Cala di Palermo.

Read more about your

Your LivTours Private Agrigento Tour begins by meeting your local private guide who will share with you the historic importance of this ancient city.  With your guide’s vibrant descriptions, you can imagine just what life was like thousands of years ago when this city was lined with seven miles of fortified wall to protect the Valley of the Temples.

You and your guide will take a small hike to the stunning first stop – the Temple of Juno offering amazing views of the rest of the ancient town and temples below with the Mediterranean as the backdrop.  Sure to be one of the highlights of your Sicilian stay, you will discover how this 450BC Doric temple, not dedicated to the God Juno, was actually misnamed!  The six standing columns will give you an idea of the importance of Ancient Greece at its height of its reign.

A stroll down the hill from these archeological ruins will take you to the most well preserved temple in the valley, the Temple of Concordia. Your private guide will tell you about its many uses throughout history and its prominence in the Roman Empire.  You will continue to the Villa Aurea, the next stop on your tour, where you will enter the manicured gardens and learn about Alexander Hardcastle. A wealthy and prominent English archeologist whose kind generosity aided in the excavations of so many of the surrounding temples. Walk through Hardcastle’s lush gardens and imagine living in this oasis in the middle of the Valley of the Temples.

Next it is on to the Temple of Heracles, one of the much loved heroes of Greek mythology. This is considered the most ancient of the temples of Agrigento. Admired by Roman emperors such as Commodus and Maximian, Heracles or Hercules depending on your spelling, was known for his extraordinary strength and this temple pays tribute to just that. One of the highlights of the tour is sure to be the Temple of Castor and Pollux, with four columns and numerous statues still intact, has become the visual symbol of Agrigento.

ADD A DRIVER & ENJOY BONUS VISIT TO SCALA DEI TURCHI

At an additional cost, you can choose to be picked up by a private chauffeur driver from Palermo, Catania or Syracuse and drive to this city in pure comfort, eliminating the need to navigate the Sicilian roads on your own. If you choose a pick up service, you can also make a bonus stop stop at the famed Scala dei Turchi if you wish, for no extra cost. This cliff of limestone rock formation has over the years formed a type of “staircase” hence its Italian name of “Turkish staircase”.

If you choose the addition of a driver to and from your hotel, your driving will be waiting for you at the entrance of your hotel. They will bring you to the Valley of the Temples, and then, after your tour, you can relax in your luxury car as you drive to an absolute visual natural masterpiece – the Scala dei Turchi. If weather permits, bring along a bathing suit and take a quick dip in the crystal clear, cool sea among the many other tourists and Italians who spend their sea vacation getaways here. It is picture perfect for a few quick snapshots before being chauffeured back to your hotel.

The Valley of the Temples , also known as Valle dei Templi in Italian , is THE must-see attraction if you are in Agrigento . It’s one of the most famous historical sites in Sicily .

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , this archaeological site is located south of the town of Agrigento . The park has 8 temples , all built between 510 and 430 BC.

The 2 best-known are the Concord temple and Hera ‘s temple, also known as temple of Juno. As they are the most well preserved of the valley, you can really realize how big they were!

To visit the site, you can park in one of the 2 car parks located at each end of the valley:

  • One at door V or porta Quinta (via cadutti di Marzabotto). It’s the best choice.
  • Another near the temple of Juno (via panoramica dei templi)

They are paid car parks, but the maximum rate is 5€, even if you stay the whole day.

Valley of the Temples entrance fee : 12€ at full rate (or 15.50€ with the museum), and you can get the site map for 1€.

The tour takes about 2h30 on foot , counting the round trip from one end of the valley to the other. For those who wish or who would be tired, a shuttle service offers round trips at 3 € per person .

As there are many tourists visiting the Valley of the Temples, you should really book your skip the line tickets in advance . At least you will not have to wait in line under the heat! This entrance ticket also includes access to Agrigento regional archaeological museum.

To buy it, you just have to click on the button below:

If you want to learn even more about history , there is also a ticket that includes an audio guide. It needs to be booked by clicking here.

And last but not least, there is a new, very fun way to visit the Valley of the Temple: Doing a guided tour on an eletric scooter.

It needs to be booked in advance by clicking the button below:

Please note that the e-scooter guided tour doesn’t include the entrance ticket. It needs to be booked separately by clicking here.

valley of the Temples Agrigento

When buying tickets for the Valley of the  Temples , you have the opportunity to get a combined ticket with Agrigento regional archaeological museum . The combined ticket is 15.50€. Bought separately, the museum entrance is 8€.

The museum is located on a hill, in the middle of the Valley of the Temples.

It presents a collection of pieces found on Agrigento site . The most famous are:

  • The Telamon, a stone colossus, one of the earliest representations of humans in a temple,
  • Agrigento Ephebe , a marble statue.

Other things to see in the museum : The Greek and Roman sarcophagi and the collection of antique vases.

Agrigento temple

When going to Agrigento from the Valley of the temples , you can stop by Agrigento market , held every Friday.

Don’t expect to see a typical Sicilian market with lots of fruit and vegetable stalls, there is mainly clothes and kitchen accessories for sale . But why not buy some stuff, if you have some free space in your luggages! However, watch out for counterfeit goods, especially shoes and handbags.

There are still a few stalls selling deli meats or cheese at reasonable prices. It can be the perfect place to stock up on groceries.

The market is pretty big and everything is sold at very good prices.

Agrigento

Agrigento Old Town is a nice place to take a stroll, with its beautiful churches and pretty cobblestone streets . Well, as long as you aren’t allergic to stairs!

The route begins at Atenea Street , the historical center’s main street. Along the way, sign boards will indicate you the monuments to see or visit, mainly churches and palaces .

The Holy Spirit Monastery (“Monastero de Santo Spirito” in Italian), with its almond cakes made by the nuns and the San Gerlando Cathedral are the most famous. During you tour, you can also see the Greeks’ Santa Maria Church and the Episcopal Palace .

The fastest route takes about 1 hour on foot .

Note that like everywhere in Sicily, most of the buildings and shops are closed between 12:00 and 16:00 . Nap time is a serious business there!

At the entrance to the old town, opposite the tourist office, you will find several paid parking.

Like everywhere in Sicily, a gentleman will be waiting for you to sell you a parking ticket . Before taking it, make sure the ticket schedule suits you. For example, this gentleman offered us a 1€ ticket from 2pm to 4pm, while the parking is free from 1pm to 4pm!

Agrigento old Town

After the Valley of the temples, the Scala dei Turchi or “Turkish staircase” is undoubtedly the second most visited place in Agrigento . You will find this must-see spot on many postcards!

Located west of Agrigento, in Realmonte , the Scala dei Turchi is a white limestone cliff carved in a staircase shape by the wind and sea. The contrast between the whiteness of the cliff and the turquoise water is striking. The photography lovers amongst you are going to be happy!

Just don’t expect to be alone, as this site is really touristic. To park your car, a few paid parking lots are available or if you are lucky enough (like us), you may find a free parking space along the road .

Once parked, go down the stairs to a first beach, and on your right you will see the Scala dei Turchi , about 150 or 200 meters away.

Don’t hesitate to climb the “steps” to admire the view , it’s really worth a look! And if you want to enjoy a quiet moment or swim quietly, a second, smaller beach is located just after. After the super touristic spot, you will be relatively alone!

We strongly recommend you to go there at sunset , it’s an unforgettable moment. Clearly one of the best places to visit in Agrigtento, and even in all Sicily!

And if you want to get a Bird’s-eye view of the cliff , you can also go to the viewpoint . It’s on the roadside, before arriving at the Scala . The panorama is also very beautiful there!

If you feel like doing an original activity near La Scala de Turchi or Agrigento, you should book a paragliding flight .

It’s really amazing to see the beautiful Sicilian landscapes from the sky!

You can book your paragliding flight in Agrigento by clicking on the button below:

Scala dei turchi

Since you are in Realmonte , we advise you to go have a look at the Capo Rosso , a very nice sandy beach .

On the right side, you can go for a stroll that will take you to a mini-port and rock formations that are ideal for a quick photo session.

Far less busy than Scala dei Turchi , it is also a great place to swim and rest.

And if you have 2 days in the region of Agrigento, the sunset is also beautiful there.

You’re going to Agrigento?

You probably know it: the hardest part of planning your trip is to find an hotel offering a good value for money!

The closer you get to your travel dates, the harder it will be to get a good deal. Lots of people will be visiting Agrigento on the same dates as you , so you can be sure that the best deals are booked extremely quickly!

Hopefully, there is a pretty simple solution to this problem: do like me and book your hotel as early as possible!

So, my best advice is to take 5 minutes (now) to have a look at the list of travelers’ favorite hotels in Agrigento.

And if you see a good offer, book it!

Most hotels offer free cancellation, so it’s quick, easy, and you will avoid the the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

To check the current best deals for your hotel in Agrigento, simply click on the green button below 😎:

Once you’ve booked your hotel, it will be time to continue reading this guide and find out more about the best things to do in Agrigento!

Capo Rosso Realmonte

About 15 minutes by car from Realmonte , you will reach Siculiana Marina . From there, follow the signposts to Torre Salsa Nature Reserve .

Arriving at the entrance to the reserve, the road turns into a dirt path with numerous ruts for about twenty minutes.

Don’t panic, our car was a small Smart Forfour and we managed to get there by taking some precautions (not too fast!). You will have the impression to go to the end of the world, but you can’t get lost, as there is only a single road!

Be careful though, if it rained the previous days, it’s better to postpone the trip . It can get very muddy and you might not be able to come back up the hill.

Upon 20 minutes, you will arrive on a vast stretch of land which serves as a car park . From there only a 3 minutes’ walk will be necessary to reach Torre Salsa beach.

The beach is really beautiful and stretches for hundreds of meters. It’s really the ideal place to swim in calm and shallow waters !

I strongly recommend you to go there if you have children, to spend a morning or afternoon. It will really be a paradise for them!

Remember to bring a picnic and water , as it’s a nature reserve, there are no restaurants or cafés there. It’s a wild and preserved place.

Voyage Tips Advice On our way to the reserve, we saw many signposts indicating robberies in the parking lot , one of them just 2 days before our visit.

Torre Salsa nature reserve

Heraclea Minoa is another very nice beach to discover by going north after the Torre Salsa nature reserve.

The particularity of this beach is to be surrounded by a pine forest , which provides a little welcoming shade. A good thing if you want to spend a day at the beach with your children.

The view on the cliffs bordering the beach is also worth a look.

The beach is part of an archaeological site, which houses a theatre and remains of an ancient city. Unfortunately they are covered by large protective tarpaulins, so you can’t see much.

Near Agrigento and Heraclea Minoa , don’t hesitate to go discover the seaside town of Sciacca .

Sciacca has many monuments and churches to visit. The must-see are:

  • The Cathedral
  • The Luna Castle
  • The enchanted castle
  • The Steripinto Palace
  • Santa Margherita Church
  • San Salvatore Gate

The reputation of Sciacca is mainly due to its thermal baths which are among Sicily’s most famous . This includes a 56-degree mud bath or steam bath located in the San Calogero natural caves.

These baths are known to be highly therapeutic for respiratory diseases and rheumatism.

Sciacca Sicily

Punta Bianca nature reserve (Riserva Naturale di Punta Bianca in Italian) is located 40 minutes away from Agrigento . The place is not really known to tourists and the coastline is really nice!

If you have enough time, I will advise to go a little further, up to Castello di Montechiaro (Montechiaro Castle), located by the sea and worth a look!

Punta Bianca nature reserve

If you like modern art , a nice surprise awaits you in Favara, 20 minutes from Agrigento: The Farm Cultural Park , an open-air cultural center in a part of the city.

It’s well laid out and really unusual, you don’t expect it at all! An interesting “surprise”discovery.

If you only have one day in Agrigento , you should visit:

  • In the morning, visit the valley of temples
  • Lunch break in Agrigento
  • Take a stroll in Agrigento old town after lunch
  • Relaxation and swimming at Scala dei Turchi in the late afternoon

In 2 days in Agrigento , take the itinerary of the 1st day I mentioned above and add for the second day:

  • The tour of the most beautiful beaches around: Capo Rosso in Realmonte , Torre Salsa nature reserve, and/or Heraclea Minoa . Beautiful landscapes, with a bit of swimming and sunbathing. Perfect for a good day!
  • If you want to do something else, you can visit the charming town of Sciacca .

This itinerary for the 2nd day can be switched with the 3rd day. It depends on where you will go after during your trip in Sicily!

During 3 days in Agrigento , you will have time to visit all the points of interest I am talking about in this article.

  • It is an opportunity to visit the Punta Bianca nature reserve .
  • And the Farm Cultural Park in the town of Favara .
  • B&B Sorahnia – Design House: Located a bit away from the heart of Agrigento and 4 km from the Valley of the Temples. Modern double room with terrace from 50€ per night, breakfast included. The strong points: the environment is quiet and close to the center, the very warm welcome and in addition, the exceptional home-made breakfast + a free private parking. It’s the best value for money in Agrigento!
  • Colleverde Park Hotel: Located 2 kilometres from the heart of Agrigento and 15 minutes’ walk from the valley of the temples. A classical but bright Double room from 68€ per night, breakfast included. The strong points: the large garden with a view of the temples, Sicilian breakfast.
  • Villa Athena Hotel : Luxury hotel located in the heart of the Valley of the temples, 200 meters from the temple of Concorde. A huge double room with a well decorated interior, and a magnificent view of the temples. Starting from 205€ per night, with breakfast at 18€. Capo Rosso

  • Kalos restaurant : Located in the heart of Agrigento, 2 steps from the Atenea street. Pure Sicilian traditional dishes with a neat and refined presentation for an affordable price. Homemade pastas and desserts , local products, no doubt you will enjoy it! Remember to book before time.
  • La Scala: Located in Atenea Street, in the heart of Agrigento. Well prepared dishes made from fresh products. Seafood-based cuisine, but meat lovers will also enjoy it. Can be a little more expensive than the average in the region, but the quality and quantity are there !
  • Siculo: Located on Via Pirandello. This restaurant offers typical Sicilian dishes such as arancini, pizzas or foccacia. Ideal for eating and tasting many small things. The dishes are simple but delicious and the quality/price ratio is very good.

During my trip in Sicily, I really enjoyed the region of Agrigento. In 2 or 3 days, it’s very easy to combine visits to historical sites such as the valley of the temples , more cultural visits to churches or palaces and moments of relaxation and swimming on beautiful beaches.

The road network between the sites is well developed , it’s easy to park everywhere and the sites can easily be visited on foot.

We went there in early October and we found the region much less touristic than the eastern side of Sicily . And that’s especially nice to enjoy the holidays!

If you want to rent a boat for a nice day at sea during your trip to Agrigente, you should book it with Samboat.

Motorboats, sailboats, yachts, small boats without a license, with or without a skipper: they simply have the most complete offer for boat rental.

So, what are you waiting for to book your boat trip in Sicily? 😊

agrigento tour

Planning a Palermo to Agrigento day trip is one of the top things on many visitors to Sicily’s to-do lists. Known for being home to the incredible Valley of the Temples, Agrigento is a beautiful place to visit and the area has even more to offer than the ancient temples at the archaeological site.

It’s no secret that Sicily is home to some incredible ancient Greek and Roman ruins — from the theatre in Taormina to the sites at Segesta and Selinunte — there are so many fascinating structures to take in on this Italian island. However, there is none that is more famous than the Valley of the Temples located just outside of the town of Agrigento.

Situated on the south coast of Sicily, Agrigento makes for a good day trip from Sicily, but the beautiful area surrounding is great to explore for more than a day if you can spare. And whether you want to visit Agrigento on an organised tour or independently, this is the guide for you.

Table of Contents

How to Get to Agrigento from Palermo

Agrigento is located about 130 kilometres away from Palermo and, while it is a bit of a trek from the Sicilian capital, it is definitely doable as a day trip.

You can easily visit Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples independently, but if that is too much stress on your Sicilian holiday, there are plenty of organised tours from Palermo, as well.

It’s worth noting that Agrigento is located a bit closer to Palermo than it is to Sicily’s second-largest city of Catania , however, it is also possible to do a Catania to Agrigento day trip, as well. Just note that travel times will be increased a bit.

By Organised Tour

For those who don’t want to deal with the logistics, planning and hassle of going on an Agrigento day trip independently, then your best bet is to go by organised tour. As one of the top day trips from the Sicilian capital, there are countless options available to those who decide to go for this route.

For example, this full-day tour and this full-day tour are excellent options if you want to spend the whole day exploring some of the top sites in Southern Sicily. It includes transport to and from Palermo, a guided tour of the Valley of the Temples and a stop at the Villa Romana del Casale.

If you simply want an easy transfer to Agrigento, then this full-day tour from Palermo is an excellent option. It includes transport to and from Palermo and will take you directly to the Valley of the Temples. You can also opt for a guided tour of the site if that interests you.

Alternatively, you can also take a private tour if you prefer to join an organised group.

Temple of Concordia

If you want to visit Agrigento independently, then by far the easiest way to do this is via your own personal vehicle. Renting a car in Sicily is an excellent option if you want to venture to places that are a bit further afield and you can find good deals for car hires on Rentalcars.com .

The drive from Palermo to Agrigento is about 2 hours and it is pretty straightforward. Once at the Valley of the Temples, there is ample parking available at the archaeological site.

Having your own car makes it much easier to follow the rest of this itinerary, as well, but keep in mind that finding parking near the Scala dei Turchi can get tricky in the high season due to the sheer demand of the place.

If you want to go independently but aren’t keen to hire a car, then getting to Agrigento via train is going to be your best bet. Countless daily trains from Palermo to Agrigento will get you to your destination in about 2 hours. You can view schedules here.

Make sure you get off at Agrigento Centrale station rather than Agrigento Bassa station if you want to easily make it to the Valley of the Temples.

Once you arrive in Agrigento, you can then take local bus number 1 or 2 from the central station directly to the Valley of the Temples. You can purchase tickets directly from the driver and it is a good idea to ensure you have a bit of cash on hand to do this.

Temple of Juno

If you’re more interested in visiting Agrigento via bus, you are going to find that relatively difficult. There are no consistent coaches that run from Palermo to Agrigento so your best bet is to take the train. Regional trains are affordable so this is a great way to reach the famed archaeological site.

Agrigento Day Trip Itinerary

If you’re travelling independently and with your own car, then follow this itinerary to get the most out of Agrigento and its surrounding area.

Though the two may seem to be synonymous, there isn’t much in the town of Agrigento itself when it comes to tourist sites. The main draw is, obviously, the Valley of the Temples and some other attractions on the coast nearby.

Valley of the Temples

Of course, the reason to do a day trip to Agrigento from Palermo is to visit the incredible Valley of the Temples. This archaeological site is considered to be one of the best collections of ancient Greek temples in the world and is very much a top attraction in Sicily.

There are countless temples to enjoy and see in this archaeological park and they are all relatively easily accessible via a paved pathway. Contrary to a few other archaeological parks in Sicily (notably Selinunte and Segesta), the Valley of the Temples isn’t quite as hilly and the sites aren’t located too far away from each other.

Keep this in mind as there is a taxi service available for €3 to shuttle you between sites – and the drivers post themselves in the car park before you reach the entrance. They can be pushy and make it seem as if you need to purchase this service in order to experience the park – if you’re able-bodied and are able to walk a few kilometres on relatively even and flat ground, you do not.

Entry into the park is €12 per person if you’re interested in visiting the temples only. There are some combined tickets available if you also want to visit the Regional Museum of Archaeology while visiting. You could also opt to go on a guided tour of the site .

Temple of Heracles

While the site actually contains the remains of seven temples, there are four that are the most intact and worth seeing. The most famous and the one that is considered to be one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world is the Temple of Concordia, which is truly spectacular.

The other temples worth seeing include the Temple of Heracles (Hercules), the Temple of Dioscuri and the Temple of Juno (Hera). All of these temples were believed to have been constructed in the 5th Century BCE.

Plan to spend a couple of hours exploring the Valley of the Temples and it’s best to head here in the morning – both to beat the crowds and the heat. If you’ve worked up an appetite after exploring this archaeological site, then consider heading to Tipiko restaurant in Agrigento for a delicious sandwich.

Temple of Dioscuri

Scala dei Turchi

If you’re driving yourself, the next stop on your Palermo to Agrigento should be the beautiful Scala dei Turchi. Translating to the “stairs of the Turks” or “Turkish steps” in English, these are incredible white cliffs that cascade into the Mediterranean off the coast of Realmonte, about fifteen to twenty minutes driving from the Valley of the Temples.

This is an incredibly popular stop to make in the area and it can be very difficult to find parking in order to go down to the cliffs themselves and climb over them.

What we recommend doing is stopping off at the viewpoint to get a good look (the Belvedere – Scala dei Turchi) before heading to our next destination. You won’t get the chance to climb over the cliffs, but you will avoid a significant number of tourist crowds.

Scala dei Turchi

Lido Rosello

End your Agrigento day trip at one of the most beautiful beaches in the region – Lido Rosello. This soft sand beach is the perfect stop and it is a bit off the tourist trail especially considering its location right next to the Scala dei Turchi.

The beach is free to enter and there are free parking areas around, as well. The water is shallow and calm, making it a great place to splash around even if you’re not a strong swimmer!

What makes this beach a fantastic place to visit is that you can get a perfect view of the Scala dei Turchi from below. Simply walk along the beach until you hit some rocks and you will be graced with a gorgeous view with a fraction of the crowds!
