Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It

Plus, why you shouldn't do this

If you use a Mac or an iPhone, it’s hard to pick a different browser over Safari. It’s incredibly fast, uses minimal resources, and respects user privacy. But if you also use a PC, you won’t have the luxury of installing Apple’s flagship browser on Windows since the Cupertino-based tech giant does not develop Safari for the Windows PC. That’s a major issue when your gear consists of cross-platform products.

What you can do is install an older version of Safari on Windows 10 or 11, although we highly advise against that due to compatibility and security-related issues. The best and safest option is to sync your browsing data from Safari to Chrome or Edge on your PC via iCloud for Windows. Setting up macOS on your PC and using Safari that way is another feasible option.

Download and Install Safari on Your Windows PC

Apple halted the development of Safari for Windows in 2012. However, the final version of the browser (Safari v.5.1.7) is freely available on the internet, so you can quickly download and install it on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. The problem? It’s terribly slow and dated, lacks compatibility with most web apps, and poses security risks. You also can’t sync your browsing data, so it’s not a solution if you want to access bookmarks and passwords.

Regardless, the steps below will walk you through downloading and installing Safari on your Windows 10/11 PC. But unless you just want to have a feel of how Safari looked almost a decade earlier, we recommend you stay away from it.

1. Download the Safari installer from a software download portal such as Uptodown , Filehippo , or TechSpot . It weighs in at 36.7MB. Unfortunately, Apple no longer supports Safari for Windows, so you can’t get it from an official source.

2. Double-click the downloaded SafariSetup executable file.

3. Select Next on the Safari Setup’s Welcome screen.

4. Accept the license agreement and select Next .

5. Specify if you want to add Safari as a desktop shortcut or not. Also, decide if you prefer it as the default browser on your computer (we recommend you don’t select this option). Select Next to continue.

6. Pick an install directory (or leave the default folder path) and select Install .

7. Wait for the Safari installer to finish installing Safari on your computer. Then, select Finish .

After installing Safari, you can choose to open it by double-clicking the Safari icon on the desktop. Or, you can open it by selecting Safari on the Start menu’s programs list. 

Despite being almost ten years old, Safari for Windows doesn’t look too out of place. To the top, you have the familiar URL bar (you can’t use it to perform searches, however), a Bookmarks strip underneath, and a dedicated Search bar on the left corner. By default, new tabs display frequently visiting sites in thumbnail format—you can use the Top Sites and History tabs to switch them and your browsing history. 

Selecting the cog-shaped icon at the right corner of the screen reveals the Safari menu, where you can choose to customize the toolbar, access your browsing history, launch a private browsing window, and so on. 

Selecting Preferences opens the Preferences pane, which provides options to modify the homepage, pick a default search engine, adjust privacy settings, manage extensions (although extensions support is non-existent), etc.

What the browser does not allow is to sign in with an Apple ID. That makes it impossible to sync your browsing data from an iPhone or Mac. Even if the functionality were present previously, Apple probably would’ve stopped you from signing in to it by now.

During our Safari tests on Windows, the browser started showing its age. Most websites took a long time to load, while web apps (such as YouTube and Google Maps) simply failed or prompted us to switch to a compatible browser. Other than for basic web browsing, it was practically useless. 

Safari for Windows also hasn’t received security updates in almost a decade, so we recommend that you don’t attempt to use it for any sensitive activities such as banking or shopping.

Sync Safari Browsing Data via iCloud for Windows

If your gear consists of a PC and iPhone or Mac, you can sync your passwords and bookmarks from Safari with Google Chrome and vice-versa by installing iCloud for Windows. That’s the most convenient method for accessing your browsing data on each platform. 

iCloud for Windows also offers password syncing for Microsoft Edge and bookmarks syncing for Mozilla Firefox. However, only Chrome receives support for both.

If you don’t have iCloud for Windows on your PC, you can get it via the Microsoft Store or the Apple website . If you already have it, make sure to upgrade it to at least version 12.5 or later (you can do that via the Microsoft Store’s Downloads and updates screen or by running the Apple Software Update applet).

With iCloud for Windows up and running, open the iCloud app and check the boxes next to Passwords and Bookmarks . You can also activate additional iCloud services such as Photos and Drive if you want.

Follow that by installing the iCloud Passwords on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The former lets you insert and save passwords to the iCloud Keychain . You can also use the iCloud Passwords app (which installs automatically alongside iCloud for Windows) to manage your passwords in Windows. On the other hand, the iCloud Bookmarks extension syncs passwords between Chrome/Firefox and Safari.

Run Safari via a macOS Virtual Machine

If you want to use the most recent version of Safari on your PC (perhaps to test a feature or extension), the only way you can do that is by running macOS via virtualization software. However, the procedure is not convenient. For starters, Mac’s operating system is not natively supported by most VM software, so installation generally relies on workarounds relying on additional software. Also, it requires lots of free disk space and uses up system resources, not to mention that virtual machine guests generally run sluggishly compared to the host operating system.

If you still want to go ahead and install macOS, the easiest way to do that is by following the instructions within this macOS Virtualbox project on GitHub. It lets you install macOS Catalina as a virtual machine via a Bash script. We’ve condensed it into the following steps:

1. Download and install Oracle VM VirtualBox on your PC (it’s free).

2. Download and install Cygwin with the following dependencies (you can select them during installation).

3. Download the macos-guest-virtualbox.sh bash script from GitHub.

4. Open the Cygwin Terminal. Then, drag and drop the bash script and press Enter .

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC. 

After the setup procedure, you can open and use Safari by selecting the Safari icon on the Mac’s Dock. Learn about using and customizing Safari on the Mac . Before you do that, however, it’s a good idea to update macOS and Safari. To do that, open the Apple menu and select System Preferences > Software Update > Update Now .

iCloud for Windows Is the Most Convenient

Although it’s possible to download and install Safari on your Windows 10/11 computer, we recommend you stray away from it. The security risks alone make it impractical, and it’s not like you can use it for any serious web browsing anyway due to compatibility issues. 

Since the most likely reason you would want to install Safari involves syncing your passwords and bookmarks, using iCloud for Windows is the only viable alternative. But if you do have the time and just want to try out the latest version of Safari, your best option is to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

Where do I download an older version of Safari for Windows

I need a specific version of Safari using WebKit 525.27; I have tracked it to Safari 3.2.1. The first Google hit on Apple points to:

However all the download links direct me to Safari 5. Are my only options to either build it myself from webkit.org or download it from an Internet archive like oldapps ?

I know this question has already been answered, but I like to give people options. Another option is filehippo.com. They have every version of a lot of programs out there including popular items such as Safari. Here is the link that would be relevant to this question. Below are some of the other very popular downloads that Filehippo has.

If you are a Windows user, you have a lot of Internet browser options. However, most users just end up using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.

7. Choose the installation options you want (You don’t need to install “Bonjour” or run Safari on Windows).

8. Choose the folder where you want Safari to be installed, you can also use the default installation folder.

9. After Safari has been installed, you can choose to open it after the installer exits by checking the box.

10. Click on Finish and you’re done!

Tabbed browsing is a really convenient feature of web browsers. Nowadays you don’t need to have open several browser windows at once. Tabbed browsing allows you to attain a much more sleek and efficient browsing experience.  With tabbed browsing you can open several web pages at once in a single browser window. Safari offers configurable, tabbed browsing functionality. Tabbed browsing within Safari allows you to control how and when a tab is opened. You can also use several related keyboard and mouse shortcuts.  This is a short guide on how to get the best out of using tabbed browsing in Safari.

First off, open Safari and click on the Safari menu, which is located in the upper left hand corner. When the drop-down menu appears, click on the Preferences option. When the preferences dialog is displayed, it will overlay your browser window.  Click on the Tabs icon.  The first option will give you a drop-down menu labelled Open pages in tabs instead of windows.  Within this menu you will see three options.

Never :If you select this option, when you click on a link to open a new window, it will launch a separate Safari window.

Automatically : When this option selected, clicking on a link to open a new window will open a new tab in most cases. Safari will try to launch a tab instead of a new window, however it may not always be successful.

Always :When this is selected, clicking on a link to open a new window will always enable a new tab to be created. Safari will always override all settings to forcefully open a new tab every time.

The tabs Preferences dialog also has two check boxes, each has its own tabbed browsing setting, these are;

Command-click opens a link in a new tab: This option is enabled by default. It provides a keyboard shortcut (COMMAND (APPLE) + MOUSE CLICK) to force a specific link to open in a new tab.

When a new tab or window opens, make it active: When this is enabled, a new tab or window will automatically gain focus as soon as it is opened.

Also in the Tabs Preferences dialog are listed some keyboard and mouse shortcut combo’s;

COMMAND + MOUSE CLICK: Opens a link in a new tab.

COMMAND + SHIFT + MOUSE CLICK: Opens a link in a new tab and makes it active.

COMMAND + OPTION + MOUSE CLICK: Opens a link in a new window.

COMMAND + OPTION + SHIFT + MOUSE CLICK: Opens a link in a new window and makes it the active window.

Once you have set these preferences to how you like them,  you are all set to browse the Internet.  Now you can enjoy a sleek browsing experience, that is less cluttered.

FileHippo is one of the most popular software download sites for free software programs that don’t require a license.

From browsers to antivirus software , you can find lots of useful, free programs on FileHippo, but is it legit?

In this article, we will be taking a closer look at FileHippo, its legitimacy, and whether it’s safe to download software from it.

FileHippo, while legal, is a site that should be avoided for free software downloads. Instead, always download software from the developer’s site directly.

• The software is usually available from the developer’s site at no added cost

The best feature of FileHippo is its list of popular programs. However, for downloading software, always use the developer’s site directly, when possible.

What Is FileHippo?

FileHippo , founded in 2004, is a popular site offering precompiled software downloads for Windows. Some of the most downloaded programs from FileHippo include Google Chrome, WinRAR, uTorrent, WhatsApp Messenger for Windows, and Avast Free Antivirus.

Some people use FileHippo because they enjoy having all the software they want in one place. Others simply don’t know better and land on the FileHippo site after searching for a software on Google, not realizing that they could simply download the software for free from the developer’s site directly.

In any case, FileHippo has lots of users. Over 43,000 software programs are currently available, and over 5.7 billion downloads have been made on the site since its founding.

Is FileHippo Legit and Safe? Risks of Freeware Sites

While FileHippo offers legitimate software, it often comes with a catch. Any free software distribution site has to make money somehow, and FileHippo is no different.

FileHippo promises that its downloads are safe and verified. However, a lot of people have found additional software bundled into their downloads, software that they did not ask for or want.

At some point, FileHippo was bundling the software on its site with unwanted programs.

Freeware download sites may get paid to put these extra programs there.

Users who only want to download the program they are looking for, such as WinRAR, are often unaware that other software is being downloaded to their computers as well.

Sometimes, the software is bundled with adware, which is a type of program that shows you ads. Adware might not be obvious when first installed, and you might only become aware of it when you suddenly notice weird advertising pop-ups on your computer for no reason.

In the worst case scenario, software from free download sites such as FileHippo may contain viruses or other types of malware . These malware programs may steal your information; for example, a keylogger is a type of malware that can keep track of whatever you type and record your password.

A very scary type of malware is ransomware. Ransomware, once installed, slowly encrypts the files on your computer without you even realizing it.

Then, once everything is encrypted, it blocks access to your files and demands that you pay a certain amount, usually in cryptocurrency (which can’t be tracked) to get your files back. Many people who don’t have backups of their files end up paying this ransom.

FileHippo, on its about page , claims that “all software is 100% spyware and virus free” and that its goal is to provide the community with software “without the usual excessive pop-ups or spyware.”

However, just because it makes that claim doesn’t mean you should trust it.

Softonic did buy FileHippo in 2022, as you can see by the copyright and licensing information on the bottom of the site. However, Softonic itself is not that much different from FileHippo; it’s a free download site that compiles available software.

What Happened When I Tried Downloading From FileHippo?

I tested out downloading a few software programs from FileHippo, so you don’t have to.

The first thing I noticed was that the website itself seemed clean. There were no annoying pop-ups and redirects, so that gave FileHippo a small bump in my rating.

The site also loaded pretty quickly, and it wasn’t clunky or laggy.

I was able to quickly navigate to the list of the most popular programs on FileHippo, and I tried downloading the first five:

• Google Chrome
• WhatsApp Messenger
• 2007 Microsoft Add-In: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS

For uTorrent and Google Chrome, FileHippo simply redirected me to the official download sites. So, there was really no benefit at all of using FileHippo; I could have saved the time and effort and gone to the official developer sites directly.

For WinRAR, WhatsApp, and the Microsoft Add-in, the downloads came directly from FileHippo. However, I ran into an issue.

Google Chrome blocked the downloads, claiming that they were dangerous:

In fact, Google Chrome seemed to flag every download coming from FileHippo as dangerous, and it blocked all of them.

I wondered what that meant, so I did some more digging. Here is what I found on Google’s help page .

Google Chrome will block downloads if it thinks they may contain viruses or perform unwanted actions on your computer, such as changing the settings, installing adware, or compromising your financial accounts.

It also said that it blocks several categories of software:

• Dangerous downloads, such as malware and viruses
• Suspicious downloads, such as those that look legit but may secretly contain malware
• Unverified downloads
• Insecure downloads from sites not secured with HTTPS (FileHippo is)

Scrolling down a bit more, I found some more useful information. Google states that it “maintains a list of websites that are known to host malicious downloads and a list of trusted software publishers.”

Remember, FileHippo has been around since 2004. It is a well-known site, so Google must be aware of it and have it on either the list of trusted software publishers or the list of sites that host malicious downloads.

Given that Google Chrome was blocking all the software programs I tried to download from FileHippo, I think it is safe to conclude that Google has placed FileHippo on the list of sites known to host malicious downloads.

Thus, I would not trust FileHippo, and I would not download any programs from there.

Where Does FileHippo Get Its Software From?

FileHippo doesn’t accept software from developers directly. Instead, it searches for available software on the internet and compiles them.

On the one hand, that does decrease the risk somewhat, because submissions from third-party developers may include bundled adware. On the other hand, it does mean you have to trust FileHippo itself to always offer clean downloads, and that is a risk you might not want to take.

Should You Download From FileHippo?

I don’t see any reason why you would want to download from FileHippo when you could just download the software from the developer’s site directly.

FileHippo isn’t a piracy site. That’s a common misconception.

Instead, it simply offers the same free software downloads already offered by the developers. For example, Avast Free Antivirus can be downloaded from the Avast site.

People usually end up downloading from FileHippo because they don’t know any better. They search for “Avast antivirus” on Google, and since sites like FileHippo are well-established, they often show up on the first page.

People who aren’t that tech-savvy don’t realize it’s not an official site. If they were a bit more informed, they would look for the official Avast site.

For example, take a look at the Google search results for “WinRAR download.” The official WinRAR website shows up first, but FileHippo shows up right after.

Some people may be unaware that FileHippo is a third-party site. In some cases, depending on the popularity of the software, there is a chance FileHippo could even outrank the official developer’s site on Google!

At other times, ads for sites like FileHippo may show up across the web on third-party websites. People may click on such an ad, not realizing that the ad was created not by the official developer but by a third-party software download site.

There are only a few cases when you would want to download software from FileHippo, such as when the software you want is outdated (made for an older version of Windows) and no longer available on the developer’s site.

Even then, there are usually other, safer sites you could download it from.

Wrapping It Up: Is FileHippo Legit?

FileHippo is a risky site to download software from.

Google seems to block all downloads from FileHippo, which indicates that it thinks it is an untrustworthy software publisher.

Besides, there is typically no reason to download software from FileHippo when you can download it directly from the developer’s website without having to worry about bundled adware or malware.

If you do need to download something from FileHippo, make sure to scan the download with an antivirus program to check for viruses.
