Mongolia Tours & Vacations

Tsagaan Khad Tourist Ger Camp, with yurt tents on Jargalant Khairkhan, Mongolia

Landing in the concrete jungle of Ulaanbaatar, you might wonder where Mongolia keeps its famous wide-open spaces.

But just wait until you catch your first glimpse of sunrise over the famous Mongolian steppe. There’s no other view on Earth quite like it: mile after mile of rolling grassy plains, dotted with the white domes of gers and broken up with golden dunes or the craggy peaks of Tavan Bogd and the Altai mountains. It’s probably no surprise that our Mongolia tours are mostly about the getting out into the wild – soaking in the hot springs of Tsenkher or hiking through the Khogno Khan – but you’ll find there’s more to this country than just good views. With its epic history, brief communist past and a (proudly) democratic future, Mongolia is ready to greet the 21st century with plenty to offer the traveler.

Best time to visit mongolia.

Mongolia has an extreme continental climate due to its inland location. The best time for traveling is from May to October when the weather is pleasant. Due to the popularity of the Naadam Festival, July is the busiest time to go; it can get crowded, but Ulaanbaatar buzzes with an incredible vibe during this time.

The wet season is from July to August and although it rains frequently during this time, the rain turns the countryside into a pleasant shade of green. It can get extremely cold from June to October, with snowstorms sometimes grounding flights and bringing transport systems to a halt.

Culture and customs

Mongolia is known for its strong nomadic traditions, but life has recently become more urbanized for many citizens in this sparsely populated country. Almost 50% of the population live in or near an urban centers, while the other 50% live a semi-nomadic lifestyle in the countryside; although, settled agricultural communities can be found in rural areas and are growing each year. Despite this change in lifestyle, the rich nomadic heritage remains strong and traditional Mongol songs, dance, stories and clothing are still celebrated, especially during festivals and national holidays.

Many Mongolian people are Buddhist - this is evident in the monasteries and temples that populate the urban areas as well as the remote regions. Shamanism is also still in existence in some of the more isolated regions of Mongolia where the proud cultures have been somewhat protected from modern influences.

A common thread that links most Mongolians is respect for family and the importance of hospitality. Probably borne from the nomadic way of life, sharing with others and receiving guests with grace is a common theme that recurs in Mongolian society. Harsh conditions, a changeable climate and the uncertainty of nomadic life mean that most Mongolians go out of their way to provide a safe haven for family, friends and guests. It is for this reason that turning down food or not accepting a warm welcome is not advisable.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Mongolian food will probably be very different to what you’re used to. Due to many Mongolians living a nomadic lifestyle, access to ingredients and different modes of cooking are limited. Fermented milk products and meats such as goat, mutton and horse are commonly eaten. Vegetarians might find eating difficult here, especially since refusing food is considered rude when visiting people’s homes. The cafes and eateries of Ulaanbaatar offer more variety and should be frequented.

Things to try in Mongolia

These steamed meat dumplings are usually served during festive times, but can be found in restaurants and cafes all year round.

2. Khuushuur

Similar to buuz, these meat-filled dumplings are fried, not steamed. Served in the cafes of Ulaanbaatar, these pastry pockets are a cheap, flavorsome snack.

Geography and environment

Bordered by   China   and   Russia , Mongolia is a land of mountains and plateaus, grasslands, marshes and deserts. Even though Mongolia is landlocked, Lake Khovsgol (one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes) provides 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water. This ancient lake provides much of the drinking water for the animal and human population, with the surrounding areas providing lush habitats for wolves, ibex, deer and bears. Due to Mongolia’s significant seismic activity, there are also many hot springs and volcanoes throughout the country.

Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world, leaving much space for nomadic herders to roam. The fast-growing capital city of Ulaanbaatar is an exception, being home to high-density housing, universities and financial institutions. As an economic centers and transport hub, Ulaanbaatar has all the modern conveniences expected of an international city.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Mongolia has been inhabited for more than 800,000 years. Archaeological evidence, such as rock paintings, points to groups of hunters and gatherers living throughout Mongolia in prehistoric times.

Mongolia’s early history is colored by battles and invasions, with various nomadic empires laying claim to the land.

The most famous of these was the Mongol Empire, created by Genghis Khan in 1206. This empire was known as the largest land-based empire of its time and had great success invading and claiming foreign territory, before declining due to infighting, disunity and the rise of neighboring territories.

Recent history

Modern Mongolia is an interesting mix of Mongol, Chinese and Russian influences.

Rising up to gain independence from decades of communist rule, modern Mongolia is becoming more fast-paced and globalized as the years go by.

Holding its first democratic election in 1990, Mongolia now enjoys a time of relative peace and stability, with tourism, agriculture and mineral resources providing more abundance and improvements in infrastructure and living conditions.

Throughout the rest of the country, squat toilets are the standard, with the exception of some ger camps and homestays, where toilets may be simple holes in the ground. Please be aware that, in most cases, soap and toilet paper aren’t provided, so make sure you come prepared.

What will it cost for a…?

Can of beer = 1500 MNT Simple meal in a local restaurant = 4000 MNT Dinner at an international restaurant = 10,000 MNT

Can I drink the water in Mongolia?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Mongolia. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Mongolia?

Major credit cards are usually accepted by most large hotels and restaurants in Ulaanbaatar and some other cities, however smaller establishments may not have credit card facilities. Ensure you have other payment options when visiting small shops and markets, and when traveling through rural areas.

What is ATM access like in Mongolia?

Travelers can access ATMs in Ulaanbaatar; however, rural regions run on a cash economy, so prepare for this when leaving the city.

Mongolian Tour Review

Ms. Elaine S Read From TripAdvisor

Traveler from usa singapore.

Where do I start? I love Mongolia, and have been 3 times with View Mongolia, a company that has enabled us to get up close with locals, especially nomad families, whom we have deep respect for. This review is about all 3 trips, in WINTER (central Mongolia), SUMMER (west and north Mongolia) and AUTUMN (very north of Mongolia).

Mrs. Megan M Read From TripAdvisor

Traveler from hong kong.

I contacted View Mongolia Travel after searching and reading a Trip Advisor review. I was conversing with Ms Boggie the whole time and her English was excellent and so accommodating and understanding of our needs. We are family of four with two boys, at the time 6 and 9 years old. My eldest had dietary restrictions and everything was not a problem where ever we went... Even with the nomads.

Mongolian Tour Review

Mrs. Caitlin Nichols Read From TripAdvisor

Traveler from usa (horse riding tour).

We booked View Mongolia for a 5 day tour of the Steppes on horseback. The company is great to work with and very accommodating. When the posted itineraries didn't work for our schedule, they were happy to customize one just for us. We also thought that the price was very reasonable for a private guide, driver, wrangler, and all meals and accommodations. As an avid equestrian, I was a little concerned with what the quality/health of the horses would be, and I was quite happy to see that they were well-cared for and very healthy and sound. I would definitely use this company again.

Altai Mountains

I enjoyed sitting outside at night seeing the stars and listening to the wonderful quiet and walking around in daylight, looking at the plants and the nearby great herds.… I have traveled a great deal … and this trip was one of the most educational and enjoyable.
Eco ger camps. Food. Seeing the wild horses. Feeling one with the country.… The trip exceeded every expectation I had.… The driver and guide were excellent.… The gers were comfortable.... All the food was fresh, plentiful and delicious.
I had four musts — Naadam, Przewalski's horses, riding a two-hump camel, drinking Chinggis Vodka. They were all great. Seeing the countryside from the back seat of a chauffeured Lexus was just icing on the cake.
Suddenly what seemed an empty landscape was peopled by millions of journeys. The hospitality and generosity and friendship offered by the Kazah and Tuvan families was wonderful. I had expected to feel an outsider but was welcomed into their lives.
The eagle festival was my favorite time in Mongolia. Having an eagle perched on my arm was in many ways spiritual.… I had been informed by previous visitors that a trip to Mongolia would be exceptional. It was, far exceeding my high expectations!
Traveling by four wheel drive on a no-lane freeway!! It was fantastic.… [Our tour leader] cared about our needs, and very easily adapted when the situation required. She always kept her eyes on our group and waited when the last person was walking slowly.
I liked the visits with families. Very interesting to see old traditional couples such as the eagle hunter and his wife, and then his daughter and her family who are "modern."
We have been telling all who will listen that Mongolia is the place to visit! The families we met in the gers were wonderful.… Thank you for making this experience so memorable … and did I mention FUN?
Everything went wonderfully.… [Our tour leader's] enthusiasm is contagious and he was an adept problem-solver.… I am grateful we had these specific drivers as they always knew where they were going, and could drive safely over very challenging terrain.
Very organized and it seemed to hit all the highlights.… We came back to camp every night tired and that is a good thing.… The restaurants' meals were delicious. The ger camp food was good.
Thank you, thank you! We really wanted this time be special for our family, and I am so thankful for your company in creating something unique and memorable for us!

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We offer your travels a true thoughtful sense, helping to build once-in-a-lifetime memories and satisfaction. Our goal is to provide high-quality goods and services that are specifically tailored to each of our travelers’ needs.

Our itineraries focused on off-the-beaten-path adventures that included a mix of contact with locals, wild nature encounters, and unique nomad culture. We take pride in offering only the finest support to our customers, always putting their needs first.

Our motto: Live life with no excuses, and travel with no regrets. Hakuna matata!

Responsible Travel

Sustainable travel, woman empowerment.

During our two decades of tourism experience, we realized that women are perhaps the most important members of Mongolian society. They invest more in their children, food, housing, and education, resulting in long-term social and economic gains for entire communities. Women devote the majority of their earnings to their families, ensuring that their children are well-fed, clothed, housed, and educated. They are also dependable, punctual, and hard workers. We make certain that the women in the family are fairly compensated.

Local Communities

Our partners.

We believe that making a significant impact cannot be accomplished on one's own. We are proud to collaborate with a variety of like-minded partners located all over the world.

Mongolia in brief

Mongolia is a high steppe and desert country located between China and Russia. Our region is completely landlocked. The plateau is usually between 900 and 1,500 meters in elevation. Because the plateau is high, landlocked, and northerly, it has a dry and chilly climate. The average annual rainfall is less than 38 cm. As a result, successful agriculture can only be carried out with irrigation in areas where reliable water supplies are available. Wheat and oats are the most common crops in these irrigated areas. The Gobi Desert experiences temperature extremes as well, with summer daytime temperatures around 40°C and nighttime temps near 10°. Temperatures in the winter can drop to minus 50°C. Mongolia is mostly grassland due to the harsh climate. Forests cover around 10% of the land area and are mostly made up of larch trees. These woods are predominantly found in the country’s northern regions. People have had to adapt to a pastoral, nomadic existence throughout history. Our livelihood and goods were centered on animal products such as wool, hides, meat, fabric, and leather.  As nomads, we needed personal items that were both highly portable and, necessary functional. Because the area has been barren of trees for generations, manufacturing has been difficult, and the existing fuel, dried animal dung, is scarcely suitable for heavy industry. Mongolia appears to have been occupied by humans as long back as 200,000 BC. Mongolia’s prehistory will undoubtedly be filled in as time and archeological work develop, but for the time being it must rely on data from other countries. It largely described the warrior races against whom China’s Great Walls were constructed and deadly wars waged. The majority of the raids were looting raids by several tribes who were at odds with one another. All that was required for serious social upheaval was a visionary leader with the strength of arms to carry it out. Temujin was subsequently known as Genghis Khan. He witnessed his father being slaughtered by a rival tribal group while he was a child. He began a protracted campaign of vengeance after escaping. Temujin was allegedly betrayed or abandoned by associates from time to time, so he made it a policy to only trust those who had proven their commitment to him. Men were given the opportunity to ascend through the ranks and attain positions of power and influence in exchange for their loyalty. In 1206, Temujin was proclaimed Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan initiated operations to expand his domain after uniting the Mongolian tribes. The Mongols established an empire that included Central Asia, northern Europe, northern India, and border regions such as northern Vietnam and Korea. Until approximately 1370, when they were forced out of Beijing, his sons, grandsons, and heirs to his skills as an administrator and military tactician ruled over all of his territory.

After the fall of the Mongol Empire, Mongolia no longer had a significant part in world politics, although individual tribes tormented Chinese society until the early twentieth century. Following the Russian Revolution, a section of Mongolia known as the Mongolian People’s Republic seceded from China and formed an alliance with Russia. Mongolia followed Russian-style communism for many decades. In 1990, a group of influential young intellectuals called for a peaceful democratic revolution. Mongolia is now a multi-party democratic democracy with a market economy. Every four years, the President and Parliament are elected by popular vote.

Our Testimonials and reviews

thanks to Nomadic Trails. Tulga and everyone on his team were so accommodating to any of our requests and even helped us navigate our way through the local market and barter for souvenirs. Truly delicious food as well at every stop. Phenomenal all around. Thank y’all for everything! Unbelievable experience in Mongolia!

Tulga, our tour guide is very knowledgeable and helpful, his driving skills also worth a praise and believe me, on these roads, it is a big advantage for someone like me with a motion sickness. They provided a cook for us, who exceeded all of our expectations. If you want a truly amazing experience just go with them!

and he was able to provide a varied, personal, unique experience. I wanted to create my own personal itinerary and Tulga had the knowledge, contacts, experience and sense of adventure to make that happen. I’ll be returning in 2020 to travel with Nomadic Trails again. Can’t wait!

hopping on our horses to go to the Tsaatan reindeer tribe, then finally staying at one of the best camps in Murun. Everything was so well-organized. Noteworthy is Tulga’s relationship with the tribe, which is an important consideration when we were planning this trip as we want to be as respectful as possible to the tribe for them not to feel uneasy during our stay. Our group was delighted to have raw and authentic Mongolian experience without having to sacrifice comfort – we had delicious food, great accommodation and comfortable transportation all throughout our trip – thanks to the incredible team of Nomadic Trails!

The 6 Best Mongolia Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights.

Mongolia, the largest landlocked country in the world, is located in East Asia and bordered by China to the south, east, and west, and Russia to the north. Its capital, Ulaanbaatar, is a blessed sparsely populated natural beauty while the country’s grand nature is home to the endangered snow leopard and Gobi bear.

From barren desert to rolling sand dunes; rocky valleys to deep canyons; lush, green national parks to snow-capped mountain ranges —Mongolia’s seclusion and geographic variety make it ideal for discovery via grand adventures…something the best Mongolia tours are all able to deliver.

It is famous for its nomadic way of life, rich cultural heritage, and distinct blend of traditional and modern influences with vast and bumpy landscapes.

Known for its signature distinguishing feature, the nomadic lifestyle, which can still be seen today as 40 percent of Mongolians are living as Nomadic herders in remote villages sleeping in traditional ger tents.

As a curious traveler wishing to get the most authentic and first-hand experience of a typical Mongolian Nomadic lifestyle, visiting a nomadic family and partaking in their everyday activities of milking cows, making cheese, and even sleeping in a ger tent will be a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in this unique way of life.

Covering an area of 1,564,116 square kilometers (603,909 square miles) with a population of just 3.35 million people, Mongolia becomes one of the most untapped and undisturbed natural wonders in the world.

What this means to travelers is an inexhaustible possibility of adventure and an unimaginable connection to mother nature. From the grassy steppes and mountains of the north and west to the Gobi desert of the south, there is a unique bit of hidden wonder in every cubic foot waiting to be discovered.

In your quest to explore Mongolia, there are many ways to go about it. Some of you will prefer to hit the road alone while some of you will want to hang on with a partner. Both of these ways are okay but the best way to really get the most out of Mongolia is by joining a group tour.

Group tours are made up of solo travelers, couples and even small families coming together because of their interests in a common destination. This makes it so much easier for you to share your experiences with the group and even make everlasting friendships along the way. Nothing beats a friendship made while making memories.

Well, in case you doubt that, try making new friends while hiking one of the peaks of Mongolia. You will surely understand what we mean.

Nomadic Mongolia

Wild mongolia, mongolia explorer, wild mongolia and golden eagle festival, mongolian panorama, cycling in mongolia and the naadam festival, g adventures.

What is it like to travel with the world’s best small group adventure travel operator with over a thumping 30 years of experience? Oh, you do not need to explain, we understand that feeling. We understand how it feels while traveling with G Adventures, a European tour operator with a proven track record in organizing the best experiences for its clients.

G Adventures takes pride in showing you the best places on the face of the earth and why you should always be on the get-go in search of hidden gems of the world. They have taken travelers to every nook and corner of the globe, this time, they want to take you to Mongolia for an unforgettable discovery. Are you set?

On this tour, you will be taken on a thrilling adventure to discover first-hand the typical nomadic lifestyle. Let’s say that you will experience living like a local in the remote villages of Mongolia. We are forced to ask how the nomadism way of life still stays today as a prominent part of the lives of 40% of Mongolians. A little bit of story here. Since the dawn of time, the Mongols have been nomadic people.

Genghis Khan established the Mongol Empire in the 13th and 14th centuries by uniting many nomadic tribes of the Mongol steppe, which is now known as modern-day Mongolia. Long after the reign of Genghis Khan, nomadism remains a way of life in modern Mongolia. Interesting! But you can find out more when you get to Mongolia.

You will visit the Gobi Desert located in southern Mongolia where you can find endangered species like snow leopards and Bactrian camels. The area is well known for its dunes of sand and rolling mountain peaks. You will meet a nomadic camel-herding family and opt to hike along the sand dunes as well as explore the area by riding a camel. We bet this is your first time on a camel’s back. No?

This fully-guided trip takes a group of 14 between the ages of 12 to 90 years old. It is family-friendly and highly adventurous and costs $2323 per person including your accommodation, meals and transportation for 14 days.

Intrepid Travel

What is the one thing you will never, ever trade? Time? You got it! Time is unquestionably your most valuable commodity at all times, even when you are on a thrilling vacation to Mongolia. We understand that you may be concerned that you will spend all of your valuable time with a group and will be constantly on the move If you opt for a group tour.

Well, you don’t have to worry about finding time for yourself with Intrepid Travel. Because there is always a mix of group and ‘you’ time on the tour. They know that you need time for yourself to rest well or be out and about with your partner exploring the nearby city on your own.

Intrepid Travel is known for its small tour groups of 10 people on average, as well as for embarking on massive adventures – all while traveling responsibly and building long-lasting friendships between people who shared everlasting memorable moments during a trip.

On this tour, you will mostly stay in tourist ger camps once you are outside of Ulaanbaatar, where you will encounter simple conditions such as outdoor toilets and nights without hot water. Don’t freak out, calm down. This is just going to be for a few days. By the way, have you ever used an outdoor toilet? If you have never, yuh! Happy First Time.

At the family ger camps, you will experience life as a nomad, living close to the land and the animals. There may be mattresses on the floor in a shared ger, with little or no electricity and no washroom facilities. You will appreciate your life and the comfort in which you live after this experience.

Because this is nothing like what you are used to, it is a challenge to get out of your comfort zone and experience the ways of living of the nomads. This is a true taste of a Mongolian Nomadic Lifestyle living in the open by the countryside.

But there’s more to this trip than that. Typically, the driving distance between destinations is hours long, but there will never be a dull moment because those long driving hours will be turned into relaxing road trips. From unwinding your tired body to singing beautiful songs with your tour group and discovering the unique scenery along the way, you are sure to love Mongolia more.

What is even more exciting is the occasional stops to interact with the locals and build strong connections with them. Nothing beats the feeling of connecting with a fellow human being from a completely different background; It is a pure feeling.

We have not even covered a pinch of what you can do on this tour. It’s an unending list. You can join the trip if you are between the ages of 15 to 99 years old. It costs $3491 per person and takes a group of 12 for 15 days. It includes your accommodation, meals and transportation.

Explore! As the name suggests, is a European tour operator with over 40 years of experience designing and guiding tours both within and outside of Europe. They enjoy taking their guests to hidden gems of a destination that few or no other travelers are aware of; it’s as if that is their unique weave of secrets. But what do you expect from a company in its forties? We mean, they have been in the game for a long time.

They believe that visitors should experience a country rather than just observe it. After all, why are you going on this trip in the first place? Explore will bring you closer to the Nomads and their way of life in their quest to give you an unforgettable experience.

Have you ever heard of the biggest traditional celebration in Mongolia? The Naadam Festival is an annual celebration of the three games of men. The games as prescribed by the Mongolians are Mongolian wrestling , horse racing , and archery , which can be dated as far back as the 13th century.

We were surprised to find out that traditional cuisine, or Khuushuur, is served throughout the Sports Stadium, along with a special fermented horse milk drink or sometimes called airag. Is horse milk drinkable? Well, you can find that out when you attend the festival.

On this tour, you will cross paths with the Gobi desert, visit the revived Erdene Zuu Monastery and explore Genghis Khan’s ruined capital of the 13th-Century which is located in what is now known as Central Mongolia. After centuries of ruin, the leftovers of Karakorum are still seen on the earth’s surface. This makes it an interesting place to visit and learn about the once-biggest empire on planet earth.

After your historical exploration, you will be ready to visit and discover the Yol Valley, where you will take a leisurely walk. The valley’s scenery is breathtaking, with permanent glaciers, small waterfalls, and a narrow, steep-sided canyon; you might be lucky to set eyes on the rare animals such as Siberian Ibex, snow leopards, and bearded vultures living there.

The tour is fully-guided and family-friendly. It takes a group of 16 between the ages of 16 to 85 years old and costs $3910 per person for 13 days including your accommodation, meals and transportation.

This incredibly knowledgeable tour operator has stayed true to its founding principles of providing exceptional and captivating journeys for travelers. On this tour, you will visit Mongolia’s largest monastery, Gandan Khiid, where you will be able to interact with Buddhist monks as they go about their daily rituals. Recently, there are over 150 monks living here. You will see the impressive 25-meter-tall Buddha made out of gold, which is a symbol of Mongolian national pride and cultural revival.

The spectacular basalt-covered valleys are home to rare flora and fauna that you may see during your visit. Terkhiin Tsagaan, a freshwater lake formed after a lava flow from the volcanoes blocked the north and south of the Terkh rivers, is famous for its fish and birdlife, including the Ruddy Shelduck and Great Cormorant.

While on the train, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the countryside and appreciate nature’s perfect creation. You will spend the night in very comfortable compartments on the train.

Trip Advisor Discover Mongolia Travel

I had a trip in Mongolia with a group of friends, organized by Discover Mongolia Travel. Everything was well organized and we were able to get a real taste of Mongolian nature and way of life. Our guide Oyuna was really excellent - sharing a lot of facts about Mongolia and the places we have visited and always very patient and flexible as our group at times didn't stick very closely to the schedule. The drivers were always smiling and very good at what they were supposed to do - get us safe in all destinations from the trip. Which is not an easy task on the gravel roads. Thanks again to our guide Oyuna and our drivers. I definitely recommend doing your Mongolia trip with these guys!

I did the Discover Mongolia 11-day tour that goes to Karakorum, the big beautiful dues in the Gobi and dozen places in between. We had lunch with a nomad family in a ger (yurt) in the middle of nowhere, stayed in wood-heated gers each night. Togos Togosoo was a warm and wonderful guide and just a beautiful spirit, and Mr. Nandi was a great driver, really watched out for us in a million ways and was a fun and steady presence. They both were fun and great at their jobs. It wasn't all 5-star accomodations (thought the last night in UB was a great room and great meal), but that wasn't what I was looking for, and everything was perfectly good. We were the last trip of the season, so it was getting a bit chilly, but something quite beautiful about hunkering under down comforters and thick camel-hair blankets after a day hiking or riding horses or two-humped camels. Saw some wild sheep, a fox, wild horses, and great birds of prey. I gave it five stars but I'll leave a sixth here for Togosoo.

Overall Great Experience: My 83-year-old father had hinted for several years that he'd like to visit Mongolia. He's traveled around the globe, but very much wanted to see what life is like across the vast, sparsely populated steppes and desert areas of Mongolia. He and I shared a father-son journey that I will cherish in memory for the rest of my life. We took the 11-day Beauty of Mongolia trip from August 25 to September 4, 2019. This was the perfect length for us, although it left us wanting to see more of the country. The star of the journey was the country and its welcoming people. But a key to any trip is the spirit within the group. My father and I were joined by just one other traveler. (Our new friend Ben from the Seattle area is a wonderful travel companion who had done his historical research before the trip and proved to be both a good teacher and an eager learner. I will remember warmly our nightly discussions over a Mongolian beer or two.) We were led by our guide Uka and driver Dambaa. Both were beyond wonderful. Uka kept us on schedule, well fed, and happy. Even though it was her last trip of the season, she showed the enthusiasm and cheerfulness of someone leading a group for the first time. Dambaa is a marvel. His driving skills are incredible. (Given the absence of roads through much of the country, this is critically important.) He took great care of his van, always keeping it both maintained and clean. But Dambaa is more than just a driver. He is also something of an assistant guide, participating in all the group's activities. He shows a playful, youthful enthusiasm tempered just enough by the wisdom and resourcefulness needed to safely navigate Mongolia's countryside. (Oyuna and Bodi were our guide and driver during the tour's last day, which was in Ulaanbaatar. They also were great, although we had much less time to get to know one another.) The joy of some trips is evident from a highlights list of activities or visited sites. For me, at least, the joy of visiting Mongolia is not found on any such list (although I loved visiting a nomadic family and some other activities). Rather, the joy came from taking in the landscape and from the interactions with the Mongolian people as we moved through our itinerary. The overall experience was so much more than any activities list could ever capture. Don't Let Any Pre-Trip Communication Frustrations Deter You: As my dad and I researched travel firms, I began exchanging emails with Discover Mongolia. I always got responses to my questions. However, sometimes those responses were slow in coming and sometimes they were incomplete. If you read the reviews here, you'll see that some others (but not all) have had a similar experience. You'll also see, though, that nearly everyone posting here has rated the trip itself very highly. My advice is that you ought not let any communication frustrations deter you. If our experience was typical (and from the reviews here, it seems to have been), you'll be very, very happy with the trip itself. Advice Based On An End-Of-Trip Glitch: Discover Mongolia arranged a driver to pick us up at 4:00 am to take us to the airport for our trip home. That driver did not show up. We had to scramble to get the hotel staff (half-asleep at that hour) to get a taxi for us. We made it to the airport and Discover Mongolia paid the fare. But we ought not have had to scramble. For those with an early flight out of Ulaanbaatar, my advice is that you have a telephone number for someone at Discover Mongolia who can help if you find yourself, as we did, stranded without a driver. (I'd offer practical trip-planning advice, but anything I'd write (e.g., dress in layers because temperatures range from quite cold to quite warm) already is well covered in other reviews.) Bottom Line Advice: Go to Mongolia. Take it all in. And give serious consideration to using Discover Mongolia.

  • The best time to make this trip May to September is the best season, with the peak season in July for the Naadam Festival. July and August are also the wettest months of the year but be assured, our climate is such that you will still have many sunny days at this time. The best time to visit the Gobi is June or September.
  • Accommodation: We believe that comfortable, welcoming accommodation is vital to the enjoyment of your trip. You will be staying in a standard 3-4 star hotel in Ulaanbaatar and a tourist ger camp (traditional dwelling) with currency (220V), shower and other useful services (2 to 4 people per ger) in the countryside. All accommodation offered by Discover Mongolia is personally checked by our staff to ensure high standards.
  • Meals: In Ulaanbaatar, you will be dining at fine European and Asian cuisine restaurants. Mutton, beef, rice, and noodles form the basis of the Mongolian diet, so your meals will be based around this. However, the trail rations may include vegetables, eggs, peanut butter, cheese and sometimes yak! On some days there will be lunchboxes from tourist camps. It is good food and our experience has been that guests are happy with this arrangement. Please let us know in advance if you are a vegetarian. Alcohol is not provided on the trip but tourists are free to bring their own.
  • Transport: Discover Mongolia use the highest level, latest model, air-conditioned private vans or 4WD vehicles for the maximum comfort on your touring days. A day's drive in the countryside will be approx 200-250km.
  • Personal things to bring with you: Warm thin layers of clothing are the best such as bring a waterproof jacket, and a hat and headscarf to protect you from the sun and winds. Don't forget insect repellent, sun cream, lip-gloss, water purifying tablets and first aid kit (medicine for headache, cold, diarrhea, runny nose; bandages; any medicine prescribed for you ). All your camera equipment.

17 things to know before traveling to Mongolia

Use these tips on health, safety and etiquette to plan your trip to Mongolia © Henn Photography / Getty Images

A land defined by boundless steppes, blue skies and roving nomads, Mongolia is perfectly set up for adventure and cultural immersion. Memorable experiences are a given, but travel in the world’s least-densely-populated country comes with its own challenges, so it pays to level-up on your Mongolia knowledge before you come.

On my own Mongolia adventures, I’ve wild-camped in a lightning storm; got queasy on fermented horse milk; broken down multiple times on epic drives ; had my pocket picked; crashed a Kazakh wedding; been thrown from two horses; and – perhaps my biggest faux pas – tried to cross part of the Gobi desert in a Toyota Prius. (Spoiler: I got stuck!)

Experience is the mother of wisdom, so here are some tips to help you make fewer mistakes on your own trip. However you choose to explore this fascinating country, remember that Mongolians are famously hospitable and predisposed to help strangers in need – even if things do go wrong, someone will eventually put you back on the right track.

Camels stand between a flowing river and a series of snow-covered mountain peaks

1. Organize your tour well before you travel

Mongolia’s travel season is fleeting, stretching from late May to late August, so the best drivers, guides and vehicles are soon snaffled up. In the past, it was possible to rock up to Ulaanbaatar in summer and ask around at guesthouses to find space on a tour, but with the suspension of the Trans-Mongolian Railway, fewer travelers are passing through. Booking tours ahead is the way to go.

2. Don’t be too ambitious with your Mongolia itinerary

A common mistake is to try to see too much of Mongolia in one go, which can turn your trip into a wearisome, bone-rattling driving safari. It’s better to focus on just one area of the country, or schedule a stop of at least two nights in each destination so you can slow down and enjoy the majesty and serenity of the Mongolian landscape.

3. Book domestic travel tickets through local Mongolian agencies

Schedules for domestic flights and rail travel often change at the last minute. If you book through a local travel agent in Mongolia, they’ll be able to sort you out if your flight is canceled or delayed. If you miss a connection or are running late, a good tour operator might even be able to hold the plane for you for an hour or so.

A woman stands behind a fully packed 4WD prepping food in a meadow

4. If you plan to drive yourself, avoid July and August

The summer travel season from July to August coincides with the time when the grassy tracks of the steppe become waterlogged and the risk of getting stuck rises exponentially. If you intend to drive yourself, it’s better to come in the shoulder season in June or September for firmer ground. If you come at the height of summer, stick to the paved roads that fan outwards from the capital, or hire a car and a local driver who knows the local driving conditions.

5. Download podcasts and audiobooks for those long road trips

Mongolia is three times the size of France , and most roads are bumpy tracks, which translates to low average speeds even in a modern 4WD. Expect to spend hours bouncing along through vast, unchanging landscapes – beautiful but somewhat repetitive. This terrain is crying out for a good soundtrack; preload your audio player with good tunes or a selection of audiobooks or podcasts to help the miles pass.

6. Bring sanitary supplies and medication

While you can pick up most health essentials in the capital, once you’re out on the steppe you’ll find that personal sanitary supplies and medication are much harder to find. Make space in your pack and come prepared with everything you need.

7. Spice up your mutton with condiments

Ulaanbaatar has a buzzing dining scene, but out in the wilds, you’ll subsist mostly on mutton dumplings (buuz) , fried mutton pancakes (khuushuur) , mutton with pasta chunks (tsuivan) , or just plain boiled mutton (makh) . On a long expedition this can get boring, so remember to pack a bottle of sriracha, horseradish, gochujang, piri-piri sauce, or any other condiment that you like to use to zhush up your food.

8. Boil or purify water from streams and lakes

Rural Mongolia may look pristine, but even crystal clear water can contain microbes, contaminants or impurities. Boiling water for at least one minute can kill most harmful microorganisms, or you can use water purification tablets or a portable filtration system to cut down on energy use.

9. Pack camping gear to save money (and if heading out west)

In Mongolia’s most popular destinations, you can stay overnight in fixed ger (yurt) camps set up for tourists, but in remote western areas such as Bayan-Ölgii province, it’s a good idea to carry your own tent and camping gear, as ger camps are few and far between. Ulaanbaatar is full of shops selling outdoor equipment, in case you didn’t bring your own gear from home.

10. Bring gifts when visiting nomad families

It’s customary to bring something for your hosts when staying with local people in Mongolia. Popular gifts include food, candies, cigarettes and bottles of alcohol. Taking along souvenirs or photographs from your own country is another great way to foster cultural exchange.

11. Climb a hill to get a mobile phone signal

In recent years, cell phone coverage in Mongolia has become much more widespread, with fewer dead zones, though there are still some off-grid spots. If you’re in the countryside and don’t have a signal, usually all you need to do is climb the nearest hill and you’ll be back online.

12. Think twice about riding that horse

Falling off a horse is one of the most common accidents to befall foreigners in Mongolia. If you are keen to get in the saddle, make sure your travel insurance covers it, and consider getting some practice before you leave home. Be extra careful in remote areas such as the Gobi , as horses tend to be more skittish, often a result of mixing different herds to make up the numbers for the tourist season.

13. Observe ger (yurt) etiquette

There are special rules for staying in Mongolia’s most famous form of accommodation. Inside a ger , it’s polite to wait until you’re seated and have been served tea before engaging in conversation with your hosts. It’s also disrespectful to throw trash into the central stove; instead, place it in front and your host will dispose of it.

14. Be vigilant when walking around central Ulaanbaatar

While Mongolia is generally a safe place to travel, tourists have been known to get robbed in Ulaanbaatar. Back in 2012, I had my wallet picked from my back pocket outside the Ulaanbaatar Department Store – a rookie mistake! Also take extra care when crossing the street – Ulaanbaatar is choked with cars and pedestrians get no special treatment from motorists.

15. Use official taxis after dark

In Ulaanbaatar there are two types of taxis – official taxis and the unofficial kind, essentially regular cars prowling the streets for fares. While unlicensed cabs are generally safe by day, you should stick to official taxis at night. Two useful taxi apps are UBCab and ABA taxi Mongolia , each with their own registered drivers.

16. Use what3words to find places and points of interest

Mongolia has adopted the popular what3words navigation system, where locations are mapped using unique combinations of three words. This makes it easier to locate sites and attractions in a country with few named roads and landmarks. The current edition of the Lonely Planet Mongolia guidebook lists what3words locations next to every point of interest.

17. Get a GPS tracker device

The vehicle version of the hikers’ GPS device, a GPS tracker will provide an extra level of safety when adventuring into the great Mongolian emptiness. If you drive with a tracker, any tour company or support office in Ulaanbaatar can locate your whereabouts if you get lost or your vehicle runs into difficulties.

Mongolia Is One Of The Cheapest Places To Visit In 2024, Here’s Why

W hen traveling, the cost often plays a significant role in deciding which destinations make the cut. Many travelers are constantly on the lookout for  budget-friendly  options that offer  unique experiences  and stunning scenery. If you’re seeking adventure on a shoestring budget, look no further than Mongolia. This country, which lies halfway between China and Russia, is home to a long and storied history, a captivating nomadic culture, and expansive, rocky landscapes. Several sites also rank it among the most affordable tourist destinations in 2024, and here are a few reasons why.

1. Low Cost of Living

When compared to other countries around the globe, Mongolia’s cost of living is quite inexpensive.  Numbeo , a website that evaluates consumer prices across nations, reports that a domestic beer costs $1.59 and that an inexpensive restaurant lunch in Mongolia averages $4.35. You can get a local transportation pass for $7.25 monthly or a one-way ticket for $0.14. A bed in a hostel can be even less expensive than a simple hotel room, which can cost as little as $15 per night. Although costs could differ by region and time of year, it’s clear that a vacation to Mongolia won’t break the bank.

2. Free or Cheap Attractions

Mongolia has a lot of natural and cultural attractions that are either free or cheap to visit. For example, you can explore the vast and beautiful Gobi Desert. You can see dunes, rock formations, dinosaur fossils, and rare wildlife here. Khustain Nuruu National Park is a great place to visit the world’s last truly wild horses, the endangered Przewalski’s horses. Living among Mongolian nomads—who tend to their flocks of horses, camels, yaks, and sheep in traditional felt tents—called gers—is another option. There are a few options for where to spend the night: with a nomadic family or on an affordable tour that covers everything from lodging to meals and activities.

3. Cheap Flights

Mongolia is not a very popular tourist destination, meaning there is less demand and competition for flights. This can result in lower airfares, especially if you book in advance and look for deals. According to  Skyscanner , the cheapest round-trip flights from the US to Mongolia in 2024 start from $1,200. You can also find more affordable flights from nearby countries such as China, Russia, South Korea, and Japan, directly connecting to Mongolia’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar.

4. Favorable Exchange Rate

Mongolia’s currency, the tugrik, has depreciated against the US dollar and other major currencies in recent years due to various economic and political factors. This means your money will go further in Mongolia, as you can get more tugriks for your dollars, euros, pounds, or other currencies. According to  XE , a website that provides currency exchange rates, 1 USD is equivalent to 3,418 MNT, 1 EUR is equivalent to 3,709 MNT, 1 GBP is equivalent to 4,332 MNT, and 1 AUD is equivalent to 2,254 MNT, as of January 2024.

5. Unique Experiences

Since Mongolia is not your average tourist hotspot, you will encounter unique experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Wrestling, archery, and horse racing are just a few sports and cultural events during the Naadam Festival, which is open to the public. The 40-meter-tall Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue, depicting the great Mongol emperor and his horse, is another must-see attraction. From it, you can take in breathtaking views of the countryside.
