The largest cruise ship in the world rescued 14 people Sunday who had been stranded on a small boat for eight days.
Alessandra Amodio was traveling on Royal Caribbeans’s Icon of the Seas with her family when the rescue happened.
“We were really surprised and honestly a little freaked out,” Amodio said. “We’ve been on a handful of cruises and never seen something like this happen. It was crazy to think that these people were stuck at sea for so long, and we were all on board excited and relieved that the ship was able to rescue them.”
She watched the small boat from the windows of the lunch buffet. People on the tiny craft were waving a large white flag.
“The boat turned around, and we pulled up as close as we could to them and stopped,” Amodio said. “RCC (Royal Caribbean) deployed a small zodiac-type rescue boat to investigate.”
As you can imagine, turning around the largest cruise ship in the world takes quite a while.
Getting near a small boat without swamping it in the ship’s wake takes careful skill.
The detour and rescue took about two hours, according to Amodio.
“Everyone around us was watching from the windows with us and just talking about how this isn’t something we ever thought to experience, and we hoped everyone on board was OK,” she said. “But never were we afraid for ourselves.”
She described the boat as a small dot in the vastness of the sea.
Royal Caribbean didn’t provide much information about the rescue.
“On March 3, 2024, Icon of the Seas encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance,” the company said in a statement. “The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people onboard. The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the US Coast Guard.”
Amodio said the crew had to take several trips to the small boat to rescue everyone.
This was the ship’s first full day of cruising.
The eight-day vacation started in Miami and the ship was headed for Honduras.

Amodio estimated from a map that the Icon of the Seas was between Cozumel, Mexico and western Cuba.
Captain’s legal responsibility to aid boaters in distress
According to Amodio, the crew broadcast “Code Oscar, Code Oscar, Code Oscar,” over the loudspeakers, about 3 p.m.
“Then shortly after, the captain came back on the speaker and announced they spotted a distressed vessel, and they were going to turn us around and investigate,” she said.
Amodio said that after the rescue, the captain announced that the crew had rescued 14 people stranded at sea for eight days. The captain said he didn’t know what country they came from.
All the rescued people left the ship the next day while docked in Roatan, Honduras, she said.
According to maritime law, a ship and crew have a legal and moral obligation to help save human life.
“A master of a ship at sea, which is in a position to be able to provide assistance on receiving a signal from any source that persons are in distress at sea, is bound to proceed with all speed to their assistance,” stated the International Maritime Organization.
Code Oscar is unique to Royal Caribbean, according to Marine Insight.
The emergency code is usually used when a person falls overboard. Captains use the signal instead of shouting orders to “prevent the potentiality of chaos.”
This is the Icon of the Seas’ inaugural season. Its very first voyage with passengers was early this year, and FOX Weather got a tour.

P&O Cruises showcases multi-million pound Ventura refurbishment
Successful concepts from Azura, such as The Glasshouse, The Retreat, menus designed by Michelin -star chef Atul Kochhar in speciality restaurant East and single cabins have all been introduced on board Ventura as part of P&O Cruises ongoing refit programme.
A multi-million pound refurbishment has been carried out to Ventura to incorporate features which have proved popular with passengers on sister ship Azura.
Highlights include: The Glasshouse
- The Glasshouse has been introduced, to replace Las Ramblas bar and restaurant on Deck 7
- Installation of enomatic wine system allows passengers to buy premium wines by the glass selected by TV wine expert Olly Smith
- Conversion to The Glasshouse menu with a selection of small and large plates available for lunch and dinner (additional charge). Small plates include:chorizo, pork belly and butter bean cassoulet and larger plates include a selection of steak, burger and fish dishes with triple cooked chips as well as vegetarian options including woodland mushroom and spring onion risotto with melting camembert
- East now features a new menu designed by Michelin-star celebrity chef Atul Kochhar
- Atul has devised a unique Thai/Indonesian menu, which also includes influences from Malaysian and Vietnamese cuisine. Sample dishes include:
- 24 Hour Slow Cooked Lamb Rendang – Indonesian style curry with coconut milk, shallots, garlic and ginger
- Spiced Sea Bream – wrapped in banana leaf and griddled with shallots and green chillies
Atul Kochhar said: “Exploring flavours from across the Far East, including Indonesia and Thailand, this new and exciting menu showcases modern Asian cuisine. Incorporating mystical spices with subtle ingredients this menu is inspired by my travels throughout Asia and my love of spice.”
Single cabins
- 18 new single cabins added: 12 outside and six inside
- Located in the same area as Azura, adjacent to the Exchange Bar on Deck 6, a central location
The Retreat
- Installation of The Retreat into the forward area on Deck 16
- The Retreat is a sumptuous open-air spa terrace with sun loungers, a separate pool and stunning sea views, exclusively for adults
- Passengers can buy a full day pass to The Retreat for a small cover charge
Other changes
- The atrium features a new dance floor which will host dance lessons day and night with a live band in the evening
- Ventura is now fully wi-fi enabled
- The cyberstudy has been converted into the ship’s new library (with some fixed PCs)
- A new perfumery has replaced the old library
- A new enomatic wine system has been introduced in Waterside, the ship’s buffet restaurant. This self-service system allows passengers to buy premium wines by the glass, similar to The Glasshouse, by purchasing a wine card on board
P&O Cruises managing director Carol Marlow said: “This is the latest of several refits to our fleet. Oriana and Oceana have already had multi-million pound investments and Arcadia will be at the end of the year. We are delighted with the changes on Ventura. All of the enhancements have been made following feedback from both existing passengers and potential cruisers. Research showed that speciality restaurants were very important as well as a variety of dining with premium grills, classic fine dining, Asian and Indian menus being the most popular.
“As a result we have added these innovations onto Ventura. We have a new Asian Fusion menu in East, designed by Atul Kochhar and we added The Glasshouse grill and wine bar, both of which have proved so popular on Azura.
“Following the success of the single cabins on Azura and Oriana, we also now have 18 new single cabins on Ventura. This offers an attractive and cost effective option to solo travellers.
“The Retreat has also been a huge hit with passengers on Azura and so we now have the same concept on Ventura. The Retreat offers a private area, exclusively for adults and is the perfect place to relax, unwind and be pampered.
“All in all, these changes are very well suited to passengers seeking a relaxed and contemporary cruising experience – perfect for families, friends and couples alike. We are very excited to have these latest innovations in time for Ventura’s new fly-cruise programme to the Mediterranean next summer. Our passengers can enjoy some of Europe’s most iconic destinations in greater style and even more comfort on our new-look Ventura.”
The changes are reflected in the new P&O Cruises 2014/15 brochure. The new programme, which has significant savings for early bookers, is on sale now.

P&O UK's cruise ship Ventura rescues 3 people on a yacht off Mexico
The P&O UK 's ship Ventura rescued 3 people stranded on a sailing yacht on Monday, March 20th, off Mexico.
The sailors made a call to the USCG requesting assistance after the vessel had lost steering ability in the Gulf of Mexico.
On Monday, as the liner was sailing towards New Orleans (Louisiana USA) , they had a distress call from a yacht that had 3 people in it, 1 man and 2 women. Ventura had crossed the boat before, but later they got the call and had to turn the ship back to rescue them.
The rescue was completed successfully, and all 3 are now safe as Ventura resumed her scheduled route to Port NOLA.
P&O Ventura left the port of Southampton (England UK) on March 2nd and is sailing a 35-night roundtrip "USA and Caribbean" Transatlantic voyage.
For more P&O Ventura incidents and accidents see the ship's CruiseMinus page .

Arvin Joseph Mirasolis, of the Philippines, was arrested and charged in Florida with the production of child pornography and possession of child pornography.
On February 26, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines alerted several law enforcement agencies about Mirasolis' criminal activity after he allegedly placed a camera into guests' bathrooms to record them while the ship was sailing in international waters, court records show.

When the Symphony of the Seas ship docked in Haiti on March 3, Homeland Security Agents and Customs and Border Patrol Officers took custody of Mirasol's electronics, where they found several videos of a woman undressing in the bathroom along with child pornography.

When questioned by law enforcement about his actions, he said, "I want to control it, but I can't," an affidavit shows.

Cruise Rescues Boat of People Lost at Sea for 8 Days
A woman from New York says that her cruise ship rescued 14 individuals stranded at sea during a recent voyage.
The woman, Alessandra Amodio, told Newsweek via Instagram that she and others in her group departed out of Miami, Florida, as part of an eight-day excursion to Honduras, Mexico and the cruise line's private Bahamas island, CocoCay.
They were aboard Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas ship when on Sunday they saw boats rescue the individuals, whose native country remains unknown. Amodio, who has been on cruises in the past , shared videos of the rescue with Newsweek .
"On March 3, 2024, Icon of the Seas encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Newsweek via email on Monday. "The ship's crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people onboard.
"The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard."
They provided no additional information.
A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson told Newsweek that since the rescue occurred in Mexico's search-and-rescue area of responsibility, there was no Coast Guard involvement in this particular instance.
"We were on our first full day of sailing, heading down to Honduras," Amodio said. "We were sailing through—what we looked up on our maps—was Mexico, near Cozumel and western Cuba."
The cruise ship , advertised as the world's largest of its kind, is 1,197 feet long, cost $1.79 billion to build, has 20 decks, and can hold a maximum of 7,600 people.
At some point between 3 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., passengers are claimed to have heard a coded alert over the ship's loudspeaker. Shortly thereafter, the captain's voice was heard on the loudspeaker informing passengers of the spotting of a distressed vessel that required further investigation.

"From the window of the lunch buffet, we could clearly see a small boat with people, waving a large white flag or sheet," Amodio said. "The boat turned around and we pulled up as close as we could to them and stopped, [Royal Caribbean] deployed a small zodiac-type rescue boat to investigate."
In one video of the rescue, voices can be heard off-camera discussing the situation while music plays in the background.
"That's so scary for the people still on the boat," said one cruise passenger.
"It looks like a raft," said a younger child watching the scene unfold in a separate video.
Amodio said that multiple trips were necessary to bring all the stranded people on board. There was no mention, by the captain or otherwise, of who the people were, where they came from, or where they were initially headed.
"We don't know who they were, but the captain came back on the speaker and announced that they rescued 14 people and that they were stranded at sea for eight days," she said.
"We were really surprised and honestly a little freaked out. We've been on a handful of cruises and never seen something like this happen. It was crazy to think that these people were stuck at sea for so long and we were all onboard excited and relieved that the ship was able to rescue them."
On February 26, a similar situation occurred involving a Carnival Cruise ship.
Video shared with local NBC affiliate 6 South Florida showed a group of 20 Cuban migrants rescued some 20 miles outside of Havana, Cuba. That cruise ship reportedly veered off its intended course, helping the migrants to safety.
None of the individuals were injured and all were repatriated back to Cuba, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Update 03/05/24, 7:47 a.m. ET: This story was updated with comment from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Thousands stranded on Norwegian Dawn cruise ship hit by possible cholera outbreak
By Haley Ott
Updated on: February 27, 2024 / 8:54 AM EST / CBS News
A Norwegian cruise ship with over 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew on board was given permission to dock in Mauritius on Tuesday after being denied permission over fears of a potential cholera outbreak on board. At least 15 people on the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn were isolated and samples were taken for testing on Sunday, according to a statement from the Port of Mauritius. The test results came in on Tuesday, the Reuters news agency reported.
People on board the ship developed mild stomach symptoms after visiting South Africa for a couple days in mid-February, CBS News partner network BBC News reported.
"The health and safety of passengers as well as that of the country as a whole are of the utmost importance to the authorities," the port authority of Mauritius said. Officials there decided to block the ship "to avoid any health risks."
There have been a number of cholera outbreaks in southern African countries over the last few months, the BBC reported. Since January 2023, over 3,000 people in the region have died from cholera and 188,000 have been infected, according to the BBC.
Cholera, an infection that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration, is rare in the developed world, but it is almost always fatal if left untreated. It is among the deadliest diseases in the world.
There are 2,184 passengers on the Norwegian Dawn along with 1,026 crew members. About 2,000 of those passengers would have completed their trip and disembarked in Port Louis, while 2,279 new passengers were expected to board the ship, Reuters reported.

Cruise Ship Worker Accused of Hiding Cameras in Bathrooms to Spy on Guests
The former employee of Royal Caribbean told investigators that he had been secretly recording people since he started working there in December 2023. He faces federal and state charges.
By Rebecca Carballo
A former employee of the cruise ship company Royal Caribbean was accused of placing cameras in guests’ bathrooms and of hiding in their bedrooms and recording them when they took off their clothes, with one of his reported targets being as young as 10.
Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, was arrested on Sunday on federal charges of production and possession of child pornography, according to a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Southern Florida. He is also charged with six counts of voyeurism in State Circuit Court in Broward County, Fla.
Royal Caribbean said that it reported the allegations to law enforcement and fired Mr. Mirasol, and that it would continue to cooperate with the authorities. It was not clear how the actions that led to the charges came to light.
“We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior,” the company said in a statement.
The cruise line alerted federal and state law enforcement agencies on Feb. 26, when the ship was still sailing on international waters. On Sunday, when it docked in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., law enforcement officers searched his devices, including a cellphone, camera, Apple Watch and a flash drive.
A video from the flash drive shows Mr. Mirasol installing the camera and pointing it toward the shower, according to the criminal complaint. One of the videos also showed a girl around 10 years old getting into the shower.
Mr. Mirasol worked as a stateroom attendant, cleaning the cabins and restocking the towels, and he admitted to investigators that he had been hiding cameras and secretly filming people since he started working on the ship, Symphony of the Seas, in December 2023, according to the complaint.
He admitted to taping a video camera inside guests’ bathrooms, and later retrieving it, saying he couldn’t control his impulses. Two public defenders who were listed as representing Mr. Mirasol did not immediately return requests for comment on Tuesday.
He would place the camera in rooms that tended to have young girls, around 16 years of age, he told investigators. When asked how he selected his targets, he answered, “If I like who is in that room, I place it,” according to the complaint.
Mr. Mirasol also said that while guests were taking showers he would enter their rooms, hide under the beds and record them with his cellphone while they were changing, the complaint stated.
A similar episode took place on the Royal Caribbean ship, the Harmony of the Seas . In April 2023, F.B.I. officers said a man was accused of hiding a Wi-Fi camera in a top-deck bathroom, pointing its lens toward the toilet. The bathroom was close to one of the ship’s surf simulators and many passengers used it to change into their swimsuits.
