Best Summer Travel Programs for High School Students – 2023

Studying abroad isn’t only for college students–high school students can also benefit from the opportunity to push their boundaries, develop cultural sensitivity, and explore other countries. In the process, they’ll develop their independence and resilience–skills they’ll need for college and beyond–as well as engage in academic and career-focused exploration. Additionally, there are programs available for just about every interest, from wildlife conservation to service-learning to sailing. Since critical aspects of attending an international or travel-based program for teens are safety and staff quality, our list only includes well-regarded providers with long-term track records who employ highly vetted and trained faculty, counselors, and trip leaders. If you’re set on leaving the US behind this summer, use the below summer travel programs for high school students as your research start point.

1)  Outward Bound High School Summer Expeditions

• Location : starting points for expeditions include Maine; Oregon; Montana; California; Colorado; North Carolina; Washington; Maryland; Minnesota
• Residential?: Yes
• Program Length: 8-22 days, depending on program
• Cost: $2,900-$7,185, depending on program
• Eligibility: High schools students aged 14-18, although age requirements vary by program
• Application Deadline: First-come, first-served

Outward Bound’s objectives are straightforward: they aim to push students socially, emotionally, and physically by allowing them to experience the natural triumphs and consequences of making their own decisions. Over sixty summer travel programs for high school students are available, of varying lengths and in multiple locations. Moreover, all teen summer travel programs are US-based.

Each program focuses on imparting both technical and interpersonal skills to its participants. For example, the 8-day Southwest Rafting expedition in Grand Junction, CO teaches technical skills like basic paddle strokes, river reading, knot tying, and sheltering strategy in addition to interpersonal skills like camaraderie, leadership, resilience, and self-awareness. Alternatively, the 22-day High Sierra Alpine Backpacking expedition , which begins in Fresno, CA and journeys into remote backcountry, stresses technical skills like campcraft, map and compass, and natural history while developing interpersonal skills like conflict resolution, positive risk-taking, and responsibility. To choose the best fit, prospective students should review the skills they’ll learn alongside the program locations & activities.

To apply to these teen summer travel programs, students will need to complete a 5-10 minute application. They’ll also need to provide a $500 deposit that secures their spot.

2)  CIEE Global Navigator High School Summer Abroad

• Location : Argentina; Australia; Botswana; Costa Rica; Czech Republic; Denmark; Dominican Republic; England; France; Germany; Ghana; Ireland; Italy; Japan; Mexico; Morocco; Netherlands; Portugal; Singapore; South Africa; South Korea; Spain; Taiwan
• Program Length: 3-4 weeks
• Cost: Typically between $5-7,000 per program, although fees for 2024 have not been released
• Eligibility: Current freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors
• Application Deadline: January

CIEE–the Council of International Educational Exchange–offers a number of summer travel programs for high school students in locations around the world. Focuses offered include arts & culture , business , language , social change , and STEM , although they are location-specific.

For example, programs in Mexico include Spanish Language and Mexican Culture as well as Leadership & Service in Youth Development . Students traveling to Portugal dive into Aquatic Ecosystems and Sustainability . Interested in music or gaming? You’ll want to check out the two programs offered in South Korea: K-Pop Immersion and Gaming & Esports Culture . Finally, some programs, like Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Europe , are offered in multiple locations (Dublin, Copenhagen, and Berlin).

Similar among all programs is the cultural immersion, relationship building, and singular focus on a particular language or topic. However, each program has its own unique objectives. For example, K-Pop Immersion students learn from music producers, songwriters, and choreographers while attending performances and visiting famous music video sites. Alternatively, Spanish Language and Mexican Culture students, who are based in the city of Mérida, spend the morning in immersive language classes and the afternoons exploring the city, visiting museums, taking cooking classes, and exploring Mayan ruins–all while participating in a homestay experience.

To apply, students need to fill out a general online application. They’ll need to be ready to do so well before summer begins–deadlines for these teen summer travel programs are in January.

3)  putney student travel.

• Location : 25+ countries; all continents (except Antarctica) represented
• Program Length: 2-4 weeks
• Cost: $4,990-10,990, depending on the program
• Application Deadline: Rolling, but it’s best to apply early as some programs fill quickly

What sets Putney apart from other teen summer travel programs is their exclusive focus on middle and high school students. Students can choose from career , exploration , service , or language-focused programs in a number of different countries. Moreover, all students participate in cultural immersion and complete a creative independent student project of their choice. Past projects have included apprenticing with a gelato maker, designing sports marketing campaigns, and learning to play a traditional instrument.

Wondering what you can expect from each focus? Career-focused programs include wildlife conservation, writing, and public health, among others.  For example, Writers’ Workshop and Craft , held in Dublin, Ireland, gives students the opportunity to experience Ireland’s storytelling tradition, write in famous historical sites, and travel to a three-day writer’s retreat on a remote island. Alternatively, Exploration programs are all about discovering a new country and immersing oneself in its culture. As such, students journeying to the Faroe Islands & Iceland participate in activities like lighthouse hikes, boat and helicopter excursions, and glacier and volcano treks. Service program participants participate in structured projects that give back to the local community they’re staying in, while those undertaking a Language program engage in authentic interactions with their homestay family as well as the local community on a daily basis.

To apply to these summer travel programs for high school students, you’ll need to complete an Applicant Statement and two teacher references. Looking for more options? 4)  Broadreach Summer Programs

• Location : Caribbean; Bali; Fiji; Curaçao; Costa Rica; Amazon & Galapagos; Red Sea; Bahamas; Bonaire
• Program Length: 12-24 days, depending on program
• Cost: $4,580-9,840, depending on program

Broadreach programs center on one of five specializations: scuba diving , sailing , marine biology , veterinary medicine , or wildlife biology . In addition, certain programs are land-based and others are liveaboard.

Broadreach’s philosophy is that students should learn and build skills in a hands-on environment. As such, students can expect to develop knowledge in a particular field while having the freedom to explore their curiosities. At the Bahamas Veterinary & Wildlife Care program, for example, students not only assist with animal care procedures and learn more about animal handling, restraint techniques, and conservation but also explore the islands via kayak and snorkel. Alternatively, students enrolled in Red Sea Advanced Scuba participate in more than 30 dives, earn multiple PADI dive certifications, and take part in community-based projects as well as Egyptian coastal and desert hikes.

Groups are kept intentionally small (approximately twelve students). Moreover, all students who attend these summer travel programs for high school students participate in some level of academic coursework, including journals, discussions, research projects, and exams, and can receive college credit for some programs.

5)  ISSOS Summer School

• Location : St Andrews (Scotland); Cambridge (UK); Yale (Connecticut)
• Program Length: 3 weeks
• Cost: approximately $9,000-12,000, depending on program
• Eligibility: St Andrews & Yale: 13-18 years old; Cambridge: 16-18 years old
• Application Deadline: Rolling

Looking for an intensive academic experience abroad? ISSOS runs three summer travel programs for high school students: St Andrews , Cambridge , and Yale . Over the course of three weeks, students choose one Academic and one Elective. They’ll also participate in plenty of social programming and trips.

Classes meet for three hours each morning; all three campuses have different Academic options available. These include Debate, Study Skills, English Language, Creative Writing, Youth Leadership, IB Extended Essay, Business & Entrepreneurship, and Journalism. Similarly, electives vary according to campus and include theatre, tennis, film, outdoor leadership, photography, golf, or art. All courses are hands-on and seek to teach essential skills. For example, Journalism students practice interviewing, research, writing, and debate.

Socially, students are divided into four Clans, which serve as their core group during their time in the program. Clans also compete against each other in friendly competitions. Moreover, excursions are held weekly. St Andrews students visit Glasgow, Edinburgh, and historic castles while Cambridge students explore Windsor, Oxford, museums, and cathedrals. Yale students travel to New York City and Boston.

No matter which of these teen summer travel programs you choose, you’re in for an international experience. Enrollment is limited to only 10% of any given nationality. Teacher recommendations are required as part of the application, and students should find out within 24 hours of submission whether or not they have been accepted.

Yes, studying abroad in high school is possible and that's what CIEE Global Navigator programs are all about! 

Our full range of study abroad programs give high schoolers the opportunity to spend anywhere between 3 weeks and a full academic year abroad. Our scholarships make summer abroad accessible to more students as we give away close to $6 million in scholarship funds to U.S. high school students each year. Students who may otherwise not have had a chance to travel as teenagers get to make lifelong friendships with students from across the U.S. and the world, helping them see themselves and other cultures in a new light.

Studying abroad in high school is not only transformative; it helps students stand out in college applications and job interviews. Unlike other countries where studying abroad is common during high school, only about 2% of U.S. students get that opportunity every year!

High school study abroad is all about experiential learning.  

Discussions, group work, hands-on workshops, excursions and time for reflection are types of experiential learning offered on Global Navigator programs.  

Students who learn through direct action, experience, and reflection can gain greater knowledge of a topic, develop more skills, and make better connections with the subject-matter in and out of class.   

While everyone is different and there is no specific age when it is best to study abroad, high school is a special time of life when studying abroad can make a real difference. It helps students grow into more independent adults and shapes college and career choices ! 

CIEE high school study abroad programs are designed for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Most students on CIEE Global Navigator programs are in their junior and senior year. 

Parents and teachers are sometimes concerned about their freshmen high school students studying abroad. However, approximately 20% of our students are rising sophomores. A study abroad experience with three full years of high school remaining provides the foundation for greater growth in language and independence over time.  

Our High School Summer Abroad Language & Culture programs offer students the option to earn 4 college credits in high school to put toward a future college degree.

You're at the brink of adulthood and even during breaks from school, commitments are starting to pile up—summer school, part-time jobs, Netflix binges, to name a few—but don't let that stop you from having the experience of a lifetime before the responsibilities (and college applications) pile on too thick.

The best part with API was all of our Cultural Excursions. Top 15 Best Places to Study Abroad for U.S. Students

Europe hosted 73% of U.S. students studying abroad, with Italy, the U.K., Spain and France the most popular destinations.

Where U.S. students study abroad

Especially throughout 2020, travel around the world was significantly restricted due to the coronavirus pandemic. That in turn meant study abroad programs were limited or paused. But the number of U.S. students studying abroad in college has since started to rebound. According to the 2023 Open Doors data from the Institute of International Education, 188,753 American students pursued opportunities abroad for academic credit in 2021-22, compared to just 14,549 students in the prior academic year. Europe hosted 73% of those students, the highest proportion in more than 30 years. Here's a look at the top 15 study abroad destinations for American students.

• Netherlands

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 2,227

Known for its tulip fields, windmills and canals, the Netherlands broke into the top 25 most popular destinations for U.S. study abroad students in 2021-22, per IIE data. Just above Austria – which had 2,037 students – the Netherlands hosted 2,227 students. Several colleges are located in or near its capital city, Amsterdam, including the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 2,283

For students interested in exploring the outdoors, Ecuador has plenty to offer, including the Amazon rainforest and the Galápagos Islands. Ecuador hosted 1% of all U.S. study abroad students in 2020-21, equivalent to 145 students, IIE data found. But that number increased to 1.2% for the 2021-22 academic year, or 2,283 students. Ecuador is one of three countries in Latin America that made the top 15 most popular study abroad destinations for Americans.

• Czech Republic

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 2,425

A landlocked country in Europe – bordering Austria, Germany, Slovakia and Poland – the Czech Republic , or Czechia, hosted 1.3% of all U.S. study abroad participants for the 2021-22 academic year, according to IIE data. There was rising interest in the country known for its fairy-tale castles and chateaux. Between 2020-21 and 2021-22, the number of U.S. students studying in the Czech Republic catapulted from 79 to 2,425.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 2,714

Among the top 15 destinations where U.S. students studied abroad, Israel was the only country in the Middle East. Known for its holy sites, Israel hosted 2,714 U.S. students in the 2021-22 academic year, compared to 539 the prior year, per IIE data. Some colleges and universities in Israel include the Weizmann Institute of Science , Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 2,832

Known for its ancient ruins – like Chichén Itzá – cenotes and beautiful beaches, Mexico hosted 2,832 students for 2021-22, or 1.5% of all U.S. study abroad students, according to IIE data. Comparably, in 2020-21, 248 students participated in an exchange program in Mexico, for a total of 1.7% of the U.S. study abroad population. Mexico City, its capital, is home to schools such as Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and Instituto Politecnico Nacional – Mexico .

• South Korea

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 4,304

Tied with Denmark, South Korea hosted 2.3% of all U.S. study abroad students in 2021-22, per IIE data. Between 2020-21 and 2021-22, the number rose from 977 to 4,304. South Korea – known for its bustling cities and music – was the only country in Asia that made the top 25 places where U.S. students participated in study abroad programs. Seoul National University has multiple campuses, including a medical campus.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 4,393

Most noted for its biking culture, colorful houses and the oldest monarchy in Europe, Denmark remains a popular destination for U.S. study abroad students. The only Nordic country on the top 15 list hosted 4,393 students in the 2021-22 academic year, according to IIE data. The University of Copenhagen in Denmark is the second-oldest university in Scandinavia, dating back to 1479, and boasts 5,000 researchers.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 4,484

Given that it was the site of the first Olympics and home to ancient ruins – such as the Acropolis, Olympia, Corinth and Knossos palace – Greece may be an ideal location for history buffs. It remains a popular destination for Americans, with nearly 4,500 students studying abroad there in 2021-22, per IIE data. That's equivalent to 2.4% of all U.S. study abroad students.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 4,751

Costa Rica welcomes tourists with adventurous spirits. But it isn't just for visitors; it's also a top 15 study abroad destination for Americans. Costa Rica – which has an unofficial slogan of "pura vida" or "pure life" – hosted 2.5% of all U.S. study abroad students in 2021-22, or 4,751 students, according to IIE data. In the prior academic year, 565 students, or 3.9% of the total number of U.S. students abroad, chose it as their destination.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 7,031

Ireland – also known as the Emerald Isle due to its lush green hills – hosted 3.7% of all U.S. study abroad students in 2021-22, slightly below Germany, according to IIE data. Rated as the 14th most popular destination for U.S. students in 2020-21, Ireland moved up to the No. 6 spot, welcoming more than 7,000 students in 2021-22. Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork are among the colleges there.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 7,644

There's been growing interest in Germany as a destination for American students. In 2021-22, Germany hosted 4% of all U.S. study abroad students, compared to 2.8% the prior school year. There are many colleges to choose from in Germany. Ruprecht Karls University Heidelberg , for example, was founded in 1386 and is considered the oldest university in the country.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 14,397

With Paris known as the "city of love" or the "city of lights," France is no stranger to American students, especially those interested in fashion, art or food. From 2020-21 to 2021-22, the number of U.S. students who studied in France rose from 1,025 to 14,397, a 1,305% increase, according to the IIE. Popular study abroad destinations in France are Sorbonne Universite and Universite de Bordeaux .

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 25,348

As the third-most popular destination, Spain hosted 13.4% of U.S. study abroad participants in 2021-22, a slight decrease from the prior academic year, per IIE data. Between 2020-21 and 2021-2022, the number of students who studied in Spain increased by more than 1,100%, from 2,089 to 25,348. The University of Barcelona and Polytechnic University of Catalonia are among the many colleges in Spain.

• United Kingdom

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 27,503

Another top destination for Americans is the United Kingdom, which hosted more than 27,000 students in 2021-22, up from 1,612 from the prior academic year, per IIE data. The U.K. has many historic higher education institutions to choose from, including the University of Oxford , which dates back to at least 1096 and is considered the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Number of U.S. students in 2021-2022: 30,610

For the second year in a row, the top study abroad destination for Americans was Italy , which said "benvenuti" to more than 30,000 U.S. students in the 2021-22 school year, IIE data found. Italy hosted 16.2% of American study abroad participants, a 1.1% increase from the prior academic year. It's also home to the oldest university in the world in continuous operation – the University of Bologna was founded in 1088.

The perfect backpack for school varies based on your age and size. Elementary school kids may not need a full-sized backpack. What’s most important is getting a backpack sized for their bodies with padded, adjustable straps. This gives them all-day comfort and room to adjust the fit as they grow.

Space is also a premium feature in a young kid’s backpack. They’ll need the space to hold everything from notebooks and binders to show-and-tell surprises. Don’t forget about fitting in that bulky lunchbox. Finding an expandable backpack allows children to modify the space in their backpack.

Middle school students or high school students likely need more room. On top of notebooks and school supplies, they'll have gym clothes and maybe even a laptop or tablet. Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

15 U.S. Graduation Trip Ideas

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Yosemite National Park, California

Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

Grand Canyon, Arizona

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Maine Windjammer Cruise

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

Azores, Portugal

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August. 

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. South Africa

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Does your student love to learn about ancient civilizations or archeology? Summer is a great time to visit the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. Start your journey in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital city, or Cusco, a scenic three-hour train ride from Machu Picchu. Just be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude, especially if you are considering hiking in the Sacred Valley. Reservations are also needed at this popular tourist destination.

The Amazon’s dry season starts in June, so you can pair a visit to Machu Picchu with time spent exploring the rainforest or traveling the Amazon by boat.

Sitting below the hurricane belt, Aruba, along with its neighboring islands of Bonaire and Curaçao, enjoys a dry season in the summer. Yet since summer in the Caribbean isn’t high on many people’s lists, you can also enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds.

Off-road on this desert island, go horseback riding on the beach, enjoy sunset catamaran sails, and spend some time with flamingoes on this Dutch island.

"We can’t keep taking trips during the school year because you’re getting older, and it’s getting harder to miss school," I told my daughter. But here’s the thing: I’ve been telling my 11-year-old daughter this for at least the past three years.

Every year, like so many other families, we struggle to decide whether we should take our children out of school for a family vacation. Whatever the reason might be – smaller crowds, lower prices, a great opportunity – families have lots to weigh before pulling kids out of school for a vacation during the school year.

What educators think about taking kids out of school for vacation

Mom of three and longtime educator Holly Hatcher-Frazier sees both sides of the coin. When she was in a school leadership position, she discouraged parents from taking family vacations during the school year.

“It is disruptive to learning and the curriculum is designed to account for regularly scheduled school vacations set by the administration," Hatcher-Frazier said. "Taking additional vacations throughout the school year can hinder academic progress for a student because there may be gaps in instruction due to absences.”

However, the Pittsburgh mom who gained fame when she starred with her daughter Nia on the reality show "Dance Moms" said the emotional side creeps in when you're looking at it from the other side of family travel.

"I can find valid reasons to justify that decision and there is no denying family vacations can be incredibly educational, worthwhile experiences. However, weighing the advantages and disadvantages of pulling kids out of school for family vacations, I would still err on the side of resisting the urge. Of course, there are extenuating circumstances that may be once-in-a-lifetime opportunities which need to be considered."

That’s exactly what happened to my family. We were given a chance to travel on an Adventures by Disney trip to South Africa. The 10-day trip was packed with amazing experiences , including safaris, first-hand accounts of apartheid and Nelson Mandela, and African cultural experiences. It was an opportunity we couldn't pass up, even though it meant taking the kids out of school to do it.

Tips for taking your kids out of school for a trip

The problem was the trip was scheduled for right after the school year started. In situations like this, Hatcher-Frazier said if you decide to take the trip, you should talk to school officials as soon as possible.

"Telling the school the day before that your child will be missing school for a week for a family vacation does not usually sit well for many," she said.

Hatcher-Frazier also noted that it's not a fair expectation to assume teachers will prepare work ahead of time for your child for unexcused absences.

"Curating lesson plans for an individual child is creating more work for a teacher in addition to the teachers' regular responsibilities, lesson plans and workload," she explained. "If parents treat the school officials with reasonable expectations, courtesy, and respect, then I think most schools will try their best to work together with parents to ensure the success of the child."

Once I saw the itinerary for our trip to South Africa, I knew there would be no time for schoolwork. It was a jam-packed family trip, but it was filled with activities that included some extraordinary form of learning every single day. And from the first day of the trip I knew we made the right decision to experience this family vacation, even though it meant missing school.

Every day was filled with educational experiences, from something as simple as learning that traffic lights in South Africa are called robots to finding out the meaning behind all the colors of the South African flag. The animal interactions on the trip were unreal, and with them came lessons on the lions, giraffes, monkeys, and everything else we saw. 

By the end of our first safari ride, my three kids were even able to tell which animal left the droppings we saw. There was tons of information thrown at my children, and I do wonder what they will retain. My daughter kept a daily journal, which I know we’ll all continue to look back on to help remind us what we learned and how we learned it.

Once we returned home, there was some makeup work that needed to be done, but everyone, including my kids' teachers and school administrators, agreed this was an incredible experience. 

Hatcher-Frazier said, in the end, trust your gut.

"You know your child best and whether or not this is a vacation that can't wait until an upcoming school break. Parents need to consider the consequences of their child missing school. Does your child work independently? Most likely, your child will have to do work on their own without the help of an instructor or in-class discussion if they miss class. Does your child take initiative?"

Truth be told, in the weeks after the trip, my daughter struggled a bit with all the makeup work. There were some nights when I questioned if we made the right decision because I hated seeing her so stressed. In the future, I’m not sure we’ll be so quick to take our children out of school for a trip we can easily reschedule. However, if another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity arises, we’ll give it careful consideration.

Once all the work was made up, my daughter told me she would 100% do the trip again. As a family, I think we made the right choice. We have amazing memories we talk about daily. The family vacation allowed us to make friends with people from all over the world whom we otherwise would have never met, and it taught my children to differentiate between rhino poop and zebra poop – a lesson I don’t think they’ll ever learn in the classroom.

The total solar eclipse is just 3 days away: Where will clouds, storms spoil the view?

We're in the home stretch now: North America's much-ballyhooed total eclipse of the sun is now just a mere three days away.

The total eclipse will pass over parts of roughly a dozen U.S. states as it moves from Texas to Maine on the afternoon of April 8.  Millions of people are expected to travel  to see it, which will also attract scientists from across the country  to study its unique effects  on the Earth  and its atmosphere .

The  full total solar eclipse experience  will plunge people along a narrow path into darkness midday, but people outside  the path of totality  can still use eclipse glasses (maybe  free eclipse glasses ) to see the moon pass in front of the sun.

That is, if clouds don't get in the way.

Where are clear skies most likely?

Within the path of totality , the best chances for clear viewing are in "northern New England and from southern Missouri to central Indiana," the Weather Prediction Center said Friday.

The National Weather Service forecast office in Burlington, Vermont, said "sky cover is still looking mostly sunny for eclipse day on Monday." In New York State, the Albany office confirmed the good forecast: "We have good news for those wishing to view the eclipse. Very pleasant spring weather conditions arrive just in time for the start of the new work week and the day of the Great North American Solar Eclipse."

Where might clouds spoil the view?

Based on past weather patterns, the Hill Country of Texas was supposed to be the ideal location for eclipse viewing: Texas' typically sunny weather, major cities such as Austin and San Antonio that are ready for tourists, and location under the path of totality all combined to make it an easy recommendation for people willing to travel.

But those hopes appear to be dashed as of Friday.

The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio said that widespread clouds are likely in that part of Texas Monday afternoon, and that "for now eclipse viewability through the cloud cover is expected to be poor."

In addition to clouds, AccuWeather says that portions of Texas will have to endure stormy weather on Monday: "Showers and drenching thunderstorms can occur across east Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley on Monday and slowly move northward into southern Oklahoma later in the day and night. Some of the heavier storms can produce flooding, hail, and brief strong wind gusts."

What about around the Great Lakes?

Elsewhere, the Weather Prediction Center said that "cloud cover in the path of totality is also possible for portions of Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania, and far western New York."

The weather service in Cleveland offered a modicum of hope: "Exact details for the April 8, 2024 eclipse remain uncertain, although confidence is medium to high that the area will not experience completely opaque/overcast skies."

What time is the solar eclipse? 

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path. You can search by zip code to find the exact time for your location. 

Monday’s solar eclipse path of totality may not be exact

A new map is projecting that the path of totality for  Monday's solar eclipse  may be narrower than experts previously believed. But if you're right on the edge of the path, don't go changing your plans just yet.

New amateur calculations suggest that  widely-accepted path  could be off by as much as just a few hundred yards. The potential shift in the eclipse's path is so miniscule, in fact, that a NASA spokesperson  told the Detroit Free Press  that the U.S. space agency won't be making any alterations to its own calculations.

So, even if the new calculation is more accurate, it’s unlikely to matter much for most of the  millions of skygazers  who hope to witness the  first total solar eclipse in North America in seven years .

The new eclipse calculations come courtesy of John Irwin, a member of the team of amateur astronomers analyzing the celestial event for the  Besselian Elements .

But don't fret too much: Not only is the new analysis not yet peer-reviewed, but NASA told the Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, that its predictions have not changed.

However, NASA spokesman Tiernan Doyle acknowledged "a tiny but real uncertainty about the size of the sun" could lead to a narrower eclipse path.

More celestial wonders on the way: 'Devil comet,' Lyrid meteor shower, pink moon also visible in April

The eclipse isn't the only sky spectacle to look forward to this month: From a "devil comet" to a stunning pink moon, a few other celestial events will give skygazers plenty of reason to look up in April once the total solar eclipse has come and gone Monday.

While the famed "devil comet"  may be visible during the solar eclipse  itself, astronomers say that the celestial body will be best sighted on April 21. That's the day that the comet, officially known as  12P/Pons-Brooks , will make its closest approach to the sun.

The comet earned its demonic nickname from its distinctive tail that resembles horns.

The Lyrid meteor shower will also make its annual appearance this month, with its peak on April 21-22. The Lyrids,  one of the oldest-known meteor showers  on record, has reliably peaked every year in late April like clockwork for thousands of years.

Finally, the full pink moon will rise in the evening sky on April 23. This month's full moon name comes from the moss pink wildflower that sprouts this time of year.

Can you drive during a solar eclipse? 

It's safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse. 

The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to find a safe place to park and then wear your eclipse glasses to view the eclipse. 

Authorities are also reminding people to not drive while wearing solar eclipse glasses . Eclipse glasses are designed specifically for viewing an eclipse and you would not be able to see the road adequately while wearing them. 

Owls may hoot and bats may fly during the eclipse, but don't expect coyotes to howl

We human beings are giddy with excitement for the upcoming eclipse on Monday, but what about the animals? It's safe to say they don't even know it's coming. How will they react when the moon blots out the sun and it gets dark?

"It will be a complete surprise to our wildlife, but we do know from other parts of the world some will assume it's nighttime all of a sudden," said Toni Mikula, a fish and wildlife scientist with Vermont Fish & Wildlife. "Birds hurrying to go to roost. Owls starting to hoot or you might see some bats come out. Three minutes later the sun will start to rise again. Everybody will go back to normal."

Mikula doesn't expect anything overly dramatic, like coyotes beginning to howl. But she'll be monitoring reactions near her home during the eclipse.

"I'm fortunate, I have a pretty good view of the sky from my house," Mikula said. "The state is encouraging people to stay home that day. I will be outside listening to see if any owls come out to hoot."

New York inmates who claimed lockdown was religious violation will be able to see eclipse

Inmates at a New York prison  who sued the state corrections department  over a planned lockdown during the  eclipse  will be able to see the  celestial event  after all.

The lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in upstate New York claimed that the lockdown, which would have prevented many statewide inmates from witnessing Monday's solar eclipse, constituted a violation of religious rights.

"For many, this eclipse is a moment of monumental religious significance that cannot be overlooked or dismissed out of hand," according to the lawsuit, which listed six plaintiffs of various religious faiths.

Corrections officials agreed Thursday to permit the plaintiffs – a Baptist, a Muslim, a Seventh-Day Adventist, two practitioners of Santeria and an atheist – to view the eclipse in exchange for the lawsuit's dismissal, department spokesman Thomas Mailey told USA TODAY.

School of Business graduate program surges in top rankings

A U.S. News & World Report methodology change rewards schools for job placement, graduate earnings

The UC Riverside School of Business increased 20 positions in a U.S. News & World Report 2024 graduate school ranking released this week. UCR’s business school was the benefactor of a methodology change this year that places greater emphasis on post-graduation earnings and how quickly graduates found jobs.

The School of Business’ Master of Business Administration program ranked No. 90 on the business school list, released Tuesday, April 9. Though 506 accredited institutions were canvassed, only 124 U.S. graduate-level business programs provided sufficient information on post-graduation earnings and job placements to merit inclusion on the U.S. News list.

“The school’s ascent in the rankings is a testament to its strategic initiatives, such as the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its academic offerings, which align with the evolving demands of the global business landscape,” said Rami Zwick, associate dean of graduate programs for the School of Business.

The rankings released this week are based in part on reputational surveys sent to more than 15,000 academics and industry professionals, including corporate recruiters. In the surveys, deans, program directors, and senior faculty are asked to judge the academic quality of a program.

In addition to the surveys, scoring factors selectivity — gauged by graduate exam test scores; undergraduate GPA, and acceptance rate. About half of the score is based on a change this year that places greater emphasis on earnings — assessing post-graduate salaries by profession — and successful job placement. The revised job placement metric rewards business schools when their graduates get jobs quickly — either when they graduate or within three months of graduation.

Separately, the business school’s part-time MBA program was ranked No. 73, an increase of three positions from the past year. That ranking was among 269 universities.

In fall 2024, the School of Business will mark the 55th anniversary of its founding and the 30th anniversary of the A. Gary Anderson School of Management with the opening of a new 63,400-square-foot academic building .

UCR’s School of Education was ranked No. 86 out of 237 positions in the graduate school rankings, which considered only doctoral-level education programs. Last year, the school ranked No. 80.

The education rank is based on research expenditures; assessments by education-school and graduate-school deans and by professionals including recruiters and school superintendents; total degrees awarded; student-faculty ratio; faculty awards; and selectivity, measured by acceptance rates.

U.S. News this week postponed publication of its rankings for medical and graduate engineering programs after some universities questioned the rankings methodology for those programs.

U.S. News & World Report, the standard-bearer among college rankings, publishes its anticipated undergraduate rankings every fall. In the most recent rankings, released in fall 2023, UCR climbed 13 positions to No. 76 overall among U.S. private and public universities. UCR was ranked No. 2 nationally in social mobility, which considers the degree to which a university elevates its graduates to a higher standard of living.

As the school holidays kick off, hundreds of families are set to take to the roads and skies to head away on vacation.

For those travelling internationally though, the main hope is the ongoing renovations at Auckland Airport won’t lead to the usual “travel chaos” many of us have come to expect.

So how are those developments going, and is the travel industry as a whole on the road to recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic?

Business travel editor Grant Bradley told The Front Page Auckland Airport alone is expecting 160,000 people to pass through it this weekend - close to the population of Tauranga.

“That’s still about 15 per cent down on this time in 2019. So, that capacity hasn’t been fully restored,” he said.

“Throughout the rest of the two weeks, there’s lots of folks flying in all directions. They’ve got popular routes, the usual ones to Australia, the US, Singapore, Fiji, China, and the domestic destinations that people are flying to - Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown, Dunedin and Nelson.”

The airport, airlines and border agencies will be hoping for smoother travel for passengers than during some peak periods in the past two years.

Staff shortages, equipment failures, rebuilding work at the airport and bad weather have plagued the aviation system during its recovery from the pandemic, often occurring when passenger numbers peak.

“There’s a very complex ecosystem, and if one part of it is a little bit skewed or gets out of rhythm, it does affect the entire system.

“Since travel recovered from the pandemic over the last couple of years, it’s been pretty bumpy. This is largely due to the difficulty of staffing up.

“[You’ve got] airlines, the people that service airlines, the ground handlers, baggage handlers, and then throughout the aviation system, there’s all these other operators. You’ve got government agencies at borders, MPI and aviation security. And then you’ve got the airport itself.”

Bradley said getting to the airport early remains a reasonable way to mitigate the possibility of missing a flight.

“If you can avoid travelling at those real peak times during the day, you should. You don’t want to clash with the business market. So if you’re flying domestically, that’s the beginning and end of the day.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Travel | travel: how to go on a high-class golf vacation without landing in the financial rough.

One of the beauties about golf, besides the azalea-flanked 13th hole at Augusta National Golf Club, home of this week’s Masters, is that unlike most professional sports, you and I can actually  play where the pros play.

Is surf-hugging Pebble Beach Golf Links too beautiful to only watch on TV every February? Then go online and get a tee time for a gorgeous California course that has made U.S. Open champions of such greats as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods, and has hosted an iconic pro-am annually since 1947. Feel like playing 18 in the Hill Country home of the Texas State Open? The Ram Rock course, considered the most difficult among the four at renowned Horseshoe Bay Golf Resort outside of Austin, welcomes all from hacker to scratcher. Same with Hawaii’s paradisal Plantation Course at Kapalua, which hosts the wintertime Sentry Tournament of Champions, and The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, home of one of the most esteemed stops on the PGA tour.

Unfortunately, for us golf lovers not among the top 1%, water hazards and sand traps aren’t our only obstacles. It takes a lot of green to play the greens. A round at Sawgrass, for example, can set one back a grand at peak tee times, making Pebble Beach sound like a bargain at $675. Another reality is not every prestigious or pro-played golf course puts out the welcome mat for us commoners. Teeing off at Augusta National, for one, pretty much requires being besties with a club member or past Masters champion.

The good news is we club-swinging stalwarts have alternatives when hankering to play legendary links. The U.S. is dotted with them, but if we take our virtual golf cart to the warm-weather golfing meccas of California, Hawaii, Texas and Florida, our GPS system can locate less forbidding championship courses that are also vacation-worthy because they’re linked to topnotch resorts with accommodations, dining and activities to match.

Where are these swinging Shangri-las? This question is well-timed. Aware that golf fever is peaking with this week’s Masters and next month’s U.S. Women’s Open — we’re in the heart of the PGA, LPGA, PGA Champions and LIV tours, as if you didn’t know — we’ve scouted the four aforementioned states for resorts that are well above par even if your score isn’t under par. Quality doesn’t come cheap, but unlike some of the more hoity-toity clubs, this quartet of courses will welcome you with open arms, which, if you listen to Tiger, should be wide on the backswing to allow your muscles to stretch to their full potential.

Traveling west to east ….

Ko Olina Golf Club

Golf in Hawaii is nearly as kingly as Kamehameha, so playing a tropics-kissed course that’s drop-dead gorgeous isn’t hard to do in the Aloha State. What isn’t as easy as Sunday morning is finding a premier property with a cool, unpretentious vibe. That’s Ko Olina Golf Club on Oahu. Perennially ranked among the nation’s top resort courses, Ko Olina ( koolinagolf.com ) is a judgment-free zone with great taste in its partnerships with the Four Seasons Resort at Ko Olina, the choice property within the master-planned oceanfront community, and an on-site Roy’s Hawaiian fusion restaurant that might be the best in the chain.

The Ted Robinson-designed course is decked with stunning water features, multi-tiered greens and generous landing areas. Here is where retired LPGA phenom Michelle Wie developed her game, and there’s a statue of her out front to prove it. The pro shop is consistently ranked among the best in the U.S., and with the rental clubs being TaylorMade graphite, it’s tempting not to schlep your set. Inclusive of cart rental, a logoed tumbler and a basket of range balls, adult fees are no higher than $255, and go down to $190 after 1 p.m.

A short shuttle ride or stroll away is the 371-unit Four Seasons ( fourseasons.com ), which offers digs and dining befitting the five-star brand, and serves as a model for luxury Hawaiian resorts striving to appeal to everyone from young families to honeymooners to seniors. An impressive schedule of daily activities is augmented by R&R offerings that include the five-star Naupaka Spa, inviting lagoons and pools, and first-rate horseback riding in the scenic Waianae Mountains.

The Links at Spanish Bay

Having recently walked the storied course and hallowed halls of the 146-year-old Royal Troon Golf Club, which in July will host its 10th Open Championship, this unworthy duffer can now distinguish between a “Scottish-style links” course and the real deal. While the landscape between Pebble Beach and the south Ayrshire coast has little in common besides a shoreline, getting in a round at The Links at Spanish Bay does hint of playing Royal Troon’s Old Course.

Helping get in the Scottish spirit is a bagpiper who plays for about 45 minutes before sunset from the first tee to the second. Fee-wise, guests staying at The Inn at Spanish Bay pay $350, which includes a cart. It’s a stately and elegant hotel with 269 rooms, and has reciprocity with other Pebble Beach Resorts facilities ( pebblebeach.com ). Overlooking spectacular sand dunes with an endless view of the Pacific costs just north of $1,000 a night, but that’s less than the rates at the sister properties, The Lodge and Casa Palermo.

Snob factor aside, “better” and “best” don’t get much more than “good” — not when Spanish Bay’s lowest-price room still comes with a romantic fireplace, reading nook, choice of nine different types of pillows and other niceties.

Lost Pines Golf Club

The phrase “everything is bigger in Texas” certainly applies to the list of activities at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa ( lostpinesresortandspa.com ), a Hill Country jewel along the banks of the Lower Colorado River. On more than 400 glorious acres just outside Austin, you can fish, ride horses and ponies, pet goats, alpacas, pigs and donkeys, say “howdy” to morbidly named Texas Longhorns (Chuck, Sirloin, Brisket, T-Bone and Ribeye — really?), go on a wagon ride and hay ride, trap shoot, fire off BB guns, slingshots and arrows, throw tomahawks, swim, float on a 1,000-foot, palm tree-lined lazy river, play tennis and pickleball, and, oh yeah, golf.

Deep in the heart of Texas is a 7,200-yard course well-described by the club’s lead golf instructor as “undulating and isolated.” Green fees top at around $200. A recent multimillion-dollar makeover included a redesign of holes 10 through 13, rebuilt bunkers and a name change from Wolfdancer. Designed by golf architect Arthur Hills, Lost Pines is a par-72 beauty graced by rolling prairies, wooded ridgelines and groves of native pecan trees.

Apparently, those homegrown pecans aren’t good enough for the nuttiest dessert served at Maude’s, a bastion of Southern hospitality ironically named for the Texas-sized pecan tree that towers over the outside tables. But like nearly everything guests taste, touch and see at the 490-unit resort, the headline ingredient of the yummy bourbon pecan pie is still locally sourced. Deliciousness continues with the lamb sliders, artisanal charcuterie and flawless libations that include a killer carajillo. Take one sip of their version of this classic Spanish coffee-based cocktail and you may never order an espresso martini again.

Before we leave Lost Pines, hoping to return again, a shout-out to Sushi By Scratch for a new-wave spin on the Japanese dining experience of omakase, where it’s basically chef’s choice through 17 individually paced pieces of nigiri, A5 wagyu beef and other delicacies. Seatings are limited to 10 patrons, each paying a minimum of $165 for this event meal. Sushi By Scratch’s Lost Pines location is one of 10 in the U.S., four of which are in California.

The Boca Raton

It’s hard to imagine a classier, cleaner and more comfortable resort than The Boca Raton ( thebocaraton.com ) in South Florida. This place is so exquisite after a history-respecting, $200-million reimagination, if it weren’t for the bill at the end it could qualify as heaven on Earth.

Dating back to 1926, The Boca Raton’s rich golf heritage includes Tommy Armour and Sam Sneed serving as its first two golf directors — 10 majors won between them. The resort’s Harborside Golf Course, exclusive to members and guests, is dedicated to these two legends. The par-71, 18-hole championship-level course features 12 acres of water, some put to use for a signature island-green finishing hole. From June to October, green fees are $210. That includes a golf cart and — get this — the food and beverage cart. We’re talking Asian shrimp salad, roasted turkey shawarma, rotisserie chicken salad and more delivered on the course by a pleasant attendant, and just for the asking. As we said, classy.

So is the adjacent high-tech driving range. Included in the resort fee are hitting stations powered by state-of-the-art Toptracer technology designed to perfect your swing. A monitor displays helpful data related to your golf ball’s speed, distance and spin rate. The digital gaming options are a blast.

Taking off the cleats, also on the resort’s 365 acres are five hotels within a hotel that make up 835 total rooms. The adults-only Yacht Club claims 112 of those units, all chic suites with private balconies and views of Lake Boca Raton, the Atlantic and a yacht-lined marina. Amenities include a butler, exclusive dining and an invitation to explore the South Florida coast while behind the wheel of a $200,000 Aston Martin DBX. Which begs the question: Do we dream about buying that or membership into the Augusta National Golf Club?
