16 Easy Steps for Planning Your Next Trip

A map on a wall with money and pins used for planning a trip

I remember when I started planning my first trip around the world. I had no idea what I was doing.

When I decided to quit my job and travel the world , I walked into a bookstore and bought Lonely Planet’s Southeast Asia on Shoestring . Buying that guidebook was my first step toward long-term travel. It made the trip seem more real, more tangible. It made it all seem possible.

While helpful, the book didn’t exactly prepare me for planning a trip around the world. Back then, there weren’t really travel blogs, sharing economy websites, and apps like there are today. I was excited and determined — but I was lost. I had to figure it out as I went, hoping I didn’t miss anything important.

Trip planning can be a daunting task. Where do you begin? What’s step one? What’s step two? What’s step three?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially when you haven’t done something like this before — and especially considering just how much information there is out there these days. Blogs, social media, and guidebooks have never been more plentiful. There’s a firehose of information out there that can sometimes make the task of planning a trip even more challenging and overwhelming.

After a decade of traveling the world , I’ve planned countless trips and vacations for myself, friends, family, and even group tours. In the beginning, it was trial by fire and I learned a lot of lessons the hard way . However, that helped me develop an efficient checklist that ensures I don’t miss anything important during the trip planning process.

After all, I don’t want to get to my next destination and then realize I forgot something. And neither do you!

There is a lot of information on this website ( and even more information packed into my book ), but one question that comes up frequently is, “Matt, how do I put this all together? How do I plan a trip?”

In a continuing effort to help you get out the door and into the world, I’ve created this step-by-step guide on how to plan a trip. It works for any kind of trip — no matter how long you’re going for! Just follow this checklist and you’ll be off in no time!

It’s a lot easier to mentally get behind “I am going to Paris in the summer” than “I’m going to Europe” or “I’m going somewhere.” Not only will your trip become more concrete for you and easier to commit to, but it will make planning easier as well…because you know what to work towards. Get specific with your plans. Get detailed. The more focused and concrete your goal, the easier it will be to actually reach it.

How much does it cost to travel? That depends!

Without knowing how long you’re going away for, I can’t answer that question. And it’s a question you need to answer so you can start planning!

In order to figure out how much you need to save you’ll need to know how long your trip will be.

Are you going away for a week? A month? A year?

The length of your trip is a huge factor in determining how much money you need. Spend some time mulling that over until you have your answer.

For example, after you say “I’m going to Paris this summer,” add “for X days.” That way you can start to narrow down just how much money you’re going to need to save. “I am going to Paris for 10 days” is a trip that you can plan for. It’s an attainable goal.

So you know where you’re going and how long you’ll be there, but to really nail down how much money you need, your next task is to research the costs in your destination at the style of travel you want.

Do you want to backpack, or would you rather stay in luxury hotels?

How much are hostels, hotels, restaurants, and attractions?

Knowing will allow you to estimate how much money you’ll need for your trip. Here is how to research costs:

  • Buy a guidebook.
  • Check out my travel guide section .
  • Google prices for specific things you want to do, such as scuba diving, bungy jumping, winery tours, etc. ( Get Your Guide is a good place to start for that)

You don’t need to do more than that. There’s so much information on the web that if you go down the rabbit hole of overplanning, you’ll get lost and confused by the firehose of information. Stick to those three things and you’ll be set!

In our example, if you are going to Paris for 10 days and need at least $75 USD a day (not including your flight), you know you need to save $750 USD (though round up to $800-900 USD since it’s good to have extra) for your trip.

If you were to travel around the world for a year, you’d need $50 USD a day .

saving money for travel in a piggy bank that's standing on a pile of cash bills

People bleed a lot of money every day through small purchases: a coffee here, a snack there. All of that adds up. In order to make changes to your spending habits, you first need to understand them. Making a list will do just that. It will also put your financial needs into a better perspective.

For example, if you need $2,000 USD for the trip you’re taking in eight months, that means you only have to save $8.33 USD per day. Couldn’t you find a way to save $8 USD per day? Heck, your daily coffee is most of that!

If you’re struggling to save money, here are 23 ways to cut your expenses and save money for travel . This will help you get started and on the road to saving money in no time!

travel credit card being used to shop online by a man at a laptop

These days, most cards have welcome offers of up to 100,000 points when you meet their minimum spending requirement. That’s enough miles for a free flight almost anywhere in the world!

If you want a free flight, sign up for the cards that help with that. If you want free hotel rooms, get a hotel card. Either way, sign up for a travel credit card and start earning points today. As long as you can pay off your monthly balance, you’ll get free travel credit.

You don’t need to sign up for very many cards either; pick one or two and focus on those. Do this the moment you decide you want to travel. Don’t wait — waiting equals lost miles, which means less free travel.

Collecting points and miles is what all the experts do to cut their costs and travel longer. It’s what has kept my costs down and me on the road for so many years. While the best cards are only available in the US, there are still plenty of options for Canadians as well as folks from Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Once you’re abroad, you’re going to need money. While many countries accept credit cards, in the majority of countries cash is still king. That means you’ll need to use ATMs to withdraw the local currency.

And that also means you’re going to get dinged by ATM fees.

If you’re just away for a week or two, paying a few dollars in ATM fees isn’t the end of the world. But if you’re away for a longer period, those fees add up and chew into your travel budget — a budget you’ve worked hard to grow. Don’t give banks any of your hard-earned money.

How? By using a no-fee ATM card.

I use Charles Schwab , but there are lots of other banks (don’t forget to check your local banks) that don’t charge ATM fees. Additionally, you can join a bank in the Global ATM Alliance .

By using a no-fee ATM card you can avoid those pesky ATM fees, leaving you more money for what it was intended for: travel.

Here’s exactly how you can avoid ATM fees while traveling .

While you get closer to your goal, make sure that you keep feeding your desire to travel. Travel planning can be exhausting and overwhelming — especially if you don’t have support from your friends and family (and especially if your trip is still months away). It can often get discouraging and feel out of reach at times.

Okay, you’re inspired, prepared, and on your way to saving money for your trip. But before you go buy that flight or book that hotel, check for deals you might have missed. You may dream of Paris but maybe there are great deals to Berlin right now. Or maybe you can get a seven-day cruise for 70% off, a package deal to Hawaii for the price of your flight to Paris, or 50% off sailing trips around Greece.

These days, there is always a deal to be found — especially if you’re flexible with your dates and/or destinations. Some deal websites worth checking out are:

  • Going (Formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights)
  • The Flight Deal
  • Holiday Pirates

A commercial plane taking off into the golden, bright sunset

Fortunately, there are still many ways to avoid being the person on the flight who paid the most for their ticket. My two favorite sites for finding cheap airfare are:

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is the best website for searching multiple destinations at the same time.
  • Google Flights – Like Skyscanner, Google Flights is great for open searches to multiple destinations.

For the best deals, book your flight about two-three months in advance. Here are two articles on how to score a cheap flight:

  • How to Find Cheap Flights
  • Booking Flights: Everything You Need to Know

luna's hostel in panama city, full of backpackers just hanging out and having fun

For trips longer than two weeks (or if you are going to be traveling long-term) just book your first few days. That will ensure you have a place to go on arrival. Once there, you can get insider advice from your hotel/hostel staff as well as other travelers. You can then use that info to plan your next steps.

While you can book more than your first few nights, you might end up wanting to change your plans once you land. I prefer having flexibility, which is why I always just book my first few nights and go from there.

Here are my go-to sites when it comes to finding the best deals on accommodation:

  • Hostelworld – Hostelworld has the largest selection of hostels and is my go-to site for finding affordable hostels.
  • Agoda – Agoda has the best results if you’re heading to Asia (though they sometimes have good US deals too).
  • Booking.com – Booking.com is the best overall platform for finding budget hotels and guesthouses.

If you’re on a tight budget or you want to connect with more locals during your travels, consider joining platforms like Couchsurfing or BeWelcome . These communities allow travelers to stay with locals for free as a sort of cultural exchange.

Long-term travelers can also try housesitting or WWOOFing as well as they both offer free accommodation (in exchange for pet sitting or farm work respectively).

Search online for discounts as well. While some countries offer cheaper prices in person, others give discounts to those who book early/online. Research which is which for your itinerary so you can save money.

For shorter trips, you can also book your activities in advance to ensure you get tickets. For longer trips, book as you go.

Additionally, before you leave home, have a rough idea of what activities are priorities for you. That way, if you run out of time or money, you can focus on your top activities so you don’t miss out. Also, make sure to double-check that there are no holidays or other obstacles that will prevent you from certain activities as well.

If you are going on a long-term trip (six months or more), consider selling your stuff in order to earn extra money for your trip. Start doing this about 60 days before you leave. Some sites to use are:

  • Gumtree – An online classified site with a focus in the UK and Australia.
  • Amazon – The biggest online store in the world.
  • Craigslist – Online global classifieds that have both local and global reach.
  • eBay – Another global online classified site.
  • Facebook Marketplace – Great for finding people near you (so you don’t need to ship your items).

If you aren’t going to be gone that long, skip this step. If you are going away long-term but want to keep your stuff, move it to a friend’s house or keep it in storage. A good storage company in the US is Public Storage . It’s one of the most affordable options out there.

Get rid of your mail, go paperless, and set up online bill payment for your recurring bills to ensure you won’t miss any while overseas. If you are still going to get paper mail, use a service like Earth Class Mail , which will collect and scan your mail for you. (If you are going on a two-week trip, you don’t really need to worry about this, so you can skip this step, too.)

If you have the option (and don’t want to pay for a mail service), you can also have all your mail sent to a friend or family member.

Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you cancel any phone plans you have or switch your plan to one that is more travel-friendly. T-Mobile is great for travelers going on trips under 3 months. For any trips longer than that, you’ll want to cancel your plan and just buy SIM cards abroad as that will be much cheaper.

Two travel backpacks all packed and ready for an adventure

I travel with a 45L REI bag and then a smaller day bag.

Unless you’re heading to multiple climates and need bulky winter gear, you don’t need a massive 70L bag stuffed to the top. Here’s my suggested packing list to help you take just the right amount of stuff and avoid overpacking ( here’s a list for female travelers as well ).

While what you pack will depend on where you are going, remember that you don’t need to pack everything you own. You can buy things you need on the road. You can do laundry overseas. At the end of the day, you have to carry everything you bring. So bring less!

There are a few extra items you might want to pack beyond your everyday clothes, though. Some things I like to bring with me are:

  • First aid kit
  • LifeStraw bottle with built-in filter
  • Packing cubes (to stay organized)
  • Travel lock (for hostel lockers)
  • Travel adapter
  • Quick-dry towel

Additionally, make sure you bring any prescriptions with you so you have enough for the duration of your trip. If that’s not feasible, bring a doctor’s note and prescription with you so you can fill it abroad.

While a lot of people think, “I’m healthy, I don’t need travel insurance . I won’t get sick,” travel insurance is much more than just medical protection. It covers you when your camera breaks, your flight is canceled, a family member dies and you have to come home, or if something gets stolen.

Yes, it’s an added expense. But it’s always better to be safe than sorry. I never leave home without it because I’ve seen first-hand just what can happen on the road.

I never thought I would pop my eardrum while I was scuba diving in Thailand or break my camera in Italy .

I didn’t know I would get knifed in Colombia .

My friend never thought he would break his leg hiking.

Another friend didn’t expect her father would die and she would have to fly back home.

Unfortunately, bad things can happen when you’re traveling. True, these events are few and far between. But they can cost tens of thousands of dollars to handle on your own. If you’re not prepared to pay out of pocket, buy travel insurance.

To help you figure out the best plan for you and your trip, here’s my ultimate guide to picking a good insurance company . It will show you how to pick a good plan that covers you for when you get sick, your flights get canceled, if you get injured, something gets stolen, or your trip is delayed.

Here’s a breakdown of my recommended travel insurance companies so you can see what company offers the best plans for your needs and budget:

  • SafetyWing – Super affordable plans for budget travelers.
  • Insure My Trip – Best for senior travelers.
  • Medjet – Provides additional evacuation coverage to ensure you get home should an emergency occur.
  • Insured Nomads – In-depth emergency and non-emergency coverage for long-term travelers and digital nomads.

For more information on travel insurance, you can check out these posts:

  • What Does Travel Insurance Actually Cover?

Additionally, make sure you know your rights as an airline passenger. For example, delayed flights to/from Europe often mean you’re entitled to compensation (beyond anything insurance-related).

A person jumping into the water from a cliff as they travel the world

If you’re feeling nervous, don’t worry — that’s perfectly normal. You’re about to embark on an amazing adventure — and that’s a huge change. Feeling anxious or nervous or unsure is something every traveler experiences. But you’ve made it this far. Trust your planning, follow your instincts, and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime. I guarantee it.

By using this post as a guideline for your trip planning, you can better organize and prepare for your trip. You’ll check all the boxes, not miss anything, and have plenty of money for your vacation. It can be as simple as booking a flight and packing or as complex as rearranging your entire life to go backpack the world forever.

But, no matter how long your trip may be, this list will help you stay organized and motivated as you plan your trip and step out into the world.

P.S.  – Yes, I did leave out visas and vaccinations, because needing those isn’t as universal as the other stuff on this list, but don’t forget to check if you need those, too!

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Travel Planning

A Journey Before the Journey

Travel, the word itself evokes a sense of excitement, wonder, and anticipation. It's a window to new experiences, cultures, and adventures waiting to be explored. Yet, the beauty of travel lies not only in the destination but in the meticulous process of planning that precedes it. Travel planning is an art, a science, and a passion that transforms a mere trip into an unforgettable journey.

The Essence of Travel Planning

At its core, travel planning is the process of organizing and preparing for a trip. It encompasses everything from choosing a destination to booking accommodations, creating itineraries, and ensuring all necessary documents are in order. But it's more than just logistics; it's about curating experiences and crafting memories.

  • Choosing the Destination The journey begins with a question - "Where to?" This is the first step in travel planning, and it can be as exhilarating as it is challenging. Do you yearn for the tranquility of nature, the vibrancy of a bustling city, or the serenity of a historical town? Researching potential destinations, considering your interests, budget, and time available are all part of this delightful puzzle.
  • Setting a Budget Budgeting is the cornerstone of travel planning. It involves estimating the total cost of your trip, including flights, accommodations, food, activities, and unforeseen expenses. Setting a realistic budget helps you make informed decisions and ensures your journey is financially stress-free.
  • Accommodation and Transportation Once the destination and budget are set, it's time to find a place to rest your head and a means to get there. Accommodation options range from luxury resorts to budget hostels and quaint Airbnb rentals. Similarly, transportation can vary from flights and trains to road trips and even cruises. The choices you make here can profoundly impact your travel experience.
  • Crafting the Itinerary Creating an itinerary is like sketching the outline of your journey. It helps you make the most of your time by scheduling activities, visits to landmarks, and downtime. While a well-structured itinerary is valuable, leaving room for spontaneity can lead to unexpected discoveries and serendipitous adventures.
  • Packing and Essentials Packing is where your planning meets reality. It involves selecting the right clothing, accessories, toiletries, and travel essentials. This step requires foresight, considering the weather, local customs, and the activities you have planned. Efficient packing ensures you're prepared for anything.
  • Documentation and Safety Before embarking on your journey, it's crucial to ensure you have all the necessary documents, such as passports, visas, and travel insurance. Safety should always be a priority, so researching any potential health risks or travel advisories for your destination is essential.
  • Embracing the Local Culture One often overlooked aspect of travel planning is cultural preparation. Learning about the customs, language, and etiquette of your destination can enhance your experience and facilitate meaningful interactions with locals.

The Rewards of Travel Planning

While the process of travel planning may seem daunting, the rewards are boundless.

  • Anticipation and Excitement The planning phase is like a prelude to the journey, filled with excitement and anticipation. It allows you to mentally explore your destination, dream about the adventures ahead, and build excitement that can enhance the overall experience.
  • Personalization Through travel planning, you have the power to personalize your journey to suit your preferences and interests. Whether you're a foodie, history buff, adventure seeker, or nature lover, you can tailor your trip to cater to your passions.
  • Confidence and Peace of Mind Knowing that you've thoroughly planned your trip can boost your confidence and provide peace of mind. It's reassuring to have reservations, maps, and emergency contacts ready when you're in a foreign land.
  • Lasting Memories Ultimately, travel planning isn't just about reaching a destination; it's about creating lasting memories. The effort you put into planning can lead to encounters with locals, breathtaking sights, and experiences that stay with you long after you've returned home.

When to Plan a Trip – Best Trip Planning Tips

plan a trip

Whether you’re new to traveling or just beginning to explore, it’s always a good idea to plan a trip ahead of time. Don’t get us wrong, there is great adventure in spontaneity, but if you’re trying to save on travel expenses, you’ll want to plan a trip at the right time.

When you plan a trip ahead of time, it gives you time to thoughtfully consider where you’d like to go and what you’d like to experience, not to mention your ideal timeframe for traveling. On the other hand, in a world where spontaneity is highly appreciated, planning a trip ahead of time can be considered to be boring.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Planning a trip in advance can ensure that you have the trip of a lifetime.

Regardless of the situation, it would help if you become a long-term planner – it’s about the mindset and thorough preparation before the trip even begins. So when should one plan a trip?

It’s recommended to start planning one year ahead for big and important trips, but there’s much to know about trip planning. Keep reading for our pointers on trip planning so you can get the most out of your adventure.

Plan a Trip the Right Way

Before all trip planning attempts are made, one must first determine the duration of the trip. The duration of the trip will ultimately depend on the type of vacation you’re planning and your availability.

You can visit different cities daily and undertake various activities, or take it slow and witness and enjoy the finer details of the places you see. And of course, there’s always the aspect of money.

Even if you’ve planned your budget based on the research you did online, there are always undefined expenses. The last thing you want is to stress out or ruin your vacation due to money issues. It’s best to budget your expenses so you’re prepared in advance.

Your travel budget is a guide, not a restrictive set of rules.

A Year Ahead, You Can Focus on the Core Elements of The Trip

Some trips are best enjoyed spontaneously, but planning a vacation one year in advance can be effective. A trip requires a minimum of one year of planning, so when considering travel, you’ll want to book ahead of time.

The best things are in limited supply and rarely available unless secured well beforehand. Generally speaking, more remote locations require advanced planning, especially when permits and visas are involved.

It’s not universally accepted, but it’s not a good idea to wait until the last minute to score a big deal as it increases the likelihood of getting the exact opposite experience you want. One can even plan ahead of time which  international roaming SIM  to purchase to ensure there will be no hassles regarding communication needs while on travel.

You can go traveling solo or with family and friends, uncovering little-known places or top destinations in Europe, the Americas, the Pacific, and Asia. The most important things you need to consider are:

Decide what place you want to visit and book airport parking bright and early; the highest fees are charged to those who show up at the airport and park. If you’re flying out of London, save money on parking Heathrow by booking in advance with just a click.

Booking is simple, and there are several ways to do it, such as using a credit card. You’ll receive a quote confirming availability and proceed with the reservation; you’ll get detailed information on how to drop off and pick up your car in your confirmation email.

The transfer time depends on how close the car park is to the airport, so if you want to get to the terminal right away, select the parking lot nearest to the airport. There are many car parks with short-term and long-term options adapted to the needs of different customers.

In some cases, a mere price difference can make your trip a lot better. Some available amenities include valet, indoor and outdoor parking, to say nothing of park’n sleep. We recommend booking your parking space at least one month before you travel.

Find the Perfect Place to Stay

If you’re like most people for whom the stay is a crucial part of the trip, you’re more likely to get what you want if you book a year out. It’s essential to keep in mind that travel destinations are seasonal, which means that the availability of accommodation and spots on hours can be a problematic issue, so prices are low during off season when nothing is happening.

Not only will you be able to pick the room that you want, but you’ll also be able to get your special requests fulfilled. Luxury hotels and resorts let you make a reservation one year in advance, while budget hotels enable bookings six months in advance.

When you plan a trip, booking accommodations well in advance becomes necessary when traveling with kids or people with special needs like your elderly relative or pregnant wife. It’s unreasonable to expect them to cover long distances as they’ll quickly tire, and it may even affect their health.

Don’t let a name mislead you. More precisely, make sure the hotel is legitimate—scammers are experts in building lookalike websites to trick you into giving them information. If you’re booking with a large hotel chain, go to the official website and make your reservation from there.

It’s okay to use third-party websites, but avoiding booking sites you’ve never heard of is best.

Look for Flights

Remember, when you plan a trip you have plenty of time to save up your budget, get or renew your passport, find out more about the language and culture, and research your destination. And, if you are hoping to use your travel points, there’s no better time than now to do it.

You can redeem your rewards for different types of travel, but redemption offers differ from card to card. As a rule, the standard time frame to purchase airline tickets is around 330 days in advance. Book your parking right after booking your tickets to receive the best possible price and tick another item off your to-do list. Through Parkos.co.uk , you can find, compare, and reserve a parking space.

Suppose you’ve found the best deal on a flight for your next holiday. There may be other, more serious problems to consider – like delays, which are just as dreadful as they’re inevitable. If you travel through multiple time zones, ensure your dates and flight times correspond with your schedule.

No matter, if you’re using your frequent flyer miles or cash to book an airline ticket, booking at the right time can help you grab the cheapest price and the best availability. Remember that just because a flight is available to buy, it doesn’t mean you’ll get the best price as it’s released.

Anticipation Is the Best Part of The Travel Journey

Indeed, nothing can compare to taking in the sights, flavors, sounds, and traditions of another place. When you plan a trip, it gives you something to look forward to – it gives you a positive, anticipatory boost.

Anticipation is a source of pleasure, so book your vacation far enough in advance to build buzz and have positive expectations. Since you have no idea whatsoever what will happen, you can use the time beforehand to dream about your vacation.

You can picture yourself lounging on the beach or weaving through the streets. You need to spend time planning and visualizing the experience in detail, but not too much time because it’s difficult to look forward to a too-distant future.

The hope and optimism you get from imagining a fulfilling vacation makes you more motivated to work towards the end goal, meaning you’re on the right path to accomplishing your goals. Sure, there’s a possibility you’ll have to delay or even cancel your trip , depending on how things evolve. But at least you won’t lose the anticipatory pleasure you experience in the meantime.

Achieving personal goals increases satisfaction but requires the initiation and maintenance of purposive behavior.

So remember, it’s best to put good effort and time in when you plan a trip. Make sure you have the best prices for flights, get the best hotel reservations, and build your dream itinerary. Travel isn’t cheap, so make sure you plan your trip with intention and mindfulness.

7 Essential Tips for Planning Your Next Trip

  • June 30, 2020

next trip ahead

It’s important to do research before going on your next trip. Keep reading for 7 essential tips for planning your next trip.

Americans spent about $782.4 billion on leisure trips in 2019. Before heading out on your next trip, you need to consider where you’re going, where you’re staying, and how you’re getting around! Without planning ahead of time, however, you might end up overspending and stress out.

Instead, keep the stress down to a minimum with these seven essential vacationing tips.

Regardless of where you’re going, you’ll want to make the most of your voyage. Relax, unwind, and enjoy the journey with this “planning a vacation” checklist today!

1. Choose Your Destination

First, figure out where you’re going!

If you’re traveling with friends or family members, you might need to collaborate during this step. Where does everyone want to go? What destinations fit your interests and your budget?

For example, maybe you want to:

Relax at a spa or resort

Go on an adventure

Sprawl out on a beach

Ride out on a road trip

Luxury experiences

Exploring new cities or countrysides

Think about how you enjoy a day off. Do you want to sit and relax by the pool or go out on a nature hike?

Determine whether you’re traveling overseas or staying in the country. Then, make sure you have enough time to travel and enjoy the destination.

How long is the duration of your trip? You might need to confirm your travel days based on your work schedule. Make sure everyone is on the same page about the dates for your trip.

If you plan on traveling with others, take the time to host a short meeting. Sit down and discuss everyone’s travel preferences. What location will fit everyone’s wishes?

You might have to compromise or take turns choosing a new destination every year.

Once you choose the destination for your next trip, you can use these vacationing tips accordingly.

2. Time It Right

Choosing when you’re heading out on your trip can alter your plans. Do you want to go during a high traffic season or low season? Do you prefer to go during the winter or summer months?

Try to avoid peak travel times if you can.

Otherwise, make sure to plan your trip and packing around the season. You might find there are some events only available during the summer months. If you have your heart set on a certain event, plan your next trip around that time frame.

3. Plan the Experience

Once you choose where you’re going and when you can decide what you’ll see and do! Make sure to dedicate plenty of time for this step on your planning a vacation checklist.

If you’re visiting a city, think about the tourist attractions you don’t want to miss. Do you plan on taking a guided tour? In that case, you’ll want to book your trip in advance.

Make a list of the popular attractions you want to visit. If you need tickets for theme parks, concerts, or other events, make sure to plan accordingly. For trips that involve a group, get your final headcount well ahead of time.

As you plan your experience, think about:

Free things to do

Places where you can walk around

Theme parks

Shows and events

Restaurants

The key to learning how to plan an international trip is to cover all your bases. You can find additional resources in guide books, tourism board websites, and travel blogs. Consider asking friends and family members about their travels, too.

They might recommend a tourist spot, attraction, or hotel you might not have considered otherwise.

4. Set a Budget

Before you start booking accommodations, make sure to set a budget for yourself. After all, you don’t want to book your flight, hotel, and entertainment plans only to realize you’ve gone over budget!

People spend almost $2,000 annually on summer vacations. Make sure to set your own budget, which can determine:

How and when you travel

Where you’ll stay

Which events you’ll attend

How you’ll get around

Where you’ll eat

Make sure to set a budget before you head out on your next trip. If you’re worried about overspending, give yourself a daily budget. Then, only use cash.

Using cash will allow you to see how much you’re spending each day. Once you’re out of money, that’s it!

5. Book Travel and Accommodations

Now that you know where you’re going and when it’s time to start booking your trip.

First, make sure to book your flights. It’s important to book your flights early on to get cheap prices. Otherwise, you might find the flight itself eats away at most of your budget.

If this is your dream vacation, consider paying a little extra to fly direct or for premium flight accommodations.

Next, you’ll need to book your hotel. Do you plan on spending the bulk of your trip at a hotel or resort? If not, you don’t need to pay for overpriced accommodations.

Instead, consider getting a hotel that’s outside of the main city. These hotels are usually cheaper.

You can check out Makkah Hotels to explore your options!

Once you choose your hotel, make sure to consider how you’ll get around. For example, if you’re staying in San Francisco, you can always use a cable car. If you’re visiting New York, you might want to have an Uber or Lyft app downloaded.

6. Get Packing

Now that you know where you’re going, you can pack accordingly.

First, maximize your suitcase space by rolling your clothes up. Make sure to choose light, stretchy fabrics, too. You can also maximize space in your bag by using a packing cube.

Consider packing an extra tote for all your souvenirs. That way, you don’t overpack your suitcase for the return trip.

Make sure to organize your liquids in any easily removable bag for security, too.

7. Confirm Everything

Once your accommodations are booked and you’re all packed, double-check everything.

Are you going overseas? Make sure you apply for your passport at least six weeks before you leave. Check the visa requirements for where you’re visiting, too.

If you want to remain safe and healthy, talk to your doctor about immunizations.

Otherwise, make second copies of all your documents, including reservations, itineraries, and flight tickets. Keep these copies with someone you trust at home. Having second copies will give you peace of mind if something gets lost.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Next Trip

Travel Tips - Ross French - November 4, 2022

plan your trip

You’ve been busy at work all year long. Meanwhile, obligations at home take up what little free time you have.

Fortunately, you have plenty of PTO left. It’s time for a vacation! Where will you go?

Figuring out the destination is the fun part, followed by the slightly stressful process of booking airfare, lodging, et cetera. After that, it’s all about counting the days.

Or is it? The unfortunate reality is many people end up with an underwhelming or flat-out unbearable vacation experience. The reasons why range widely, but it often comes down to poor planning and insufficient preparation.

Do you want to make the most of a hard-earned vacation? If so, keep reading. The following are six tips for making the most of your next trip:

Adjust your sleep schedule ahead of time

Traveling across multiple time zones leads to a phenomenon known as jet lag. That means you’re either too tired during the day or too wired at night. While we understand this isn’t practical for everyone, those with the opportunity to adjust their sleep schedule ahead of time should consider doing so in order to make the most of their trip. The alternative is to spend one or more vacation days adjusting to the local time zone. Who wants that?

Avoid overscheduling

One of the most common mistakes travelers make is getting carried away with their intended itinerary. Simply put, they try to cram too many activities into their trip. The result is a ceaseless sense of feeling rushed and under pressure. If that’s not the opposite of how you want to feel on vacation, we don’t know what is! The solution is to avoid overscheduling. We suggest planning two major activities per day with one or more options if time allows.

Come prepared

Are you a native English speaker planning to travel someplace where Spanish is the local language? If so, you’ll want to brush up on common words and basic sentences. Is the trip taking you to an unfamiliar major city? Buy a map and study it prior to your arrival. These and other forms of pre-trip preparation will go a long way in making your vacation more enjoyable and less vulnerable to common travel-related problems such as language miscues and navigational errors.

Take vitamin supplements

Spending half the day traveling takes its toll on your body and mind. Making matters worse is the fact you’re probably not getting adequate nutrition during this time. The result is an increased likelihood of arriving at your destination feeling confused and exhausted. With this in mind, consider packing a vitamin B6 supplement and other vitamin supplements in order to improve focus and reenergize your body in time to enjoy your trip. That way, you aren’t relying on caffeine and sugar to keep you going.

Soak it in before capturing it on camera

Everyone has a smartphone these days, which means everyone carries around a camera in their purse or front pocket. For vacationers, the result is wanting to capture everything they see and do as images and videos to share on Instagram and Facebook. But in doing so, they often fail to enjoy the moment! Rather than feel compelled to pull your phone out every time you see something spectacular, stop and soak it in as a memory. While photos and video recordings are great mementos, nothing will replace the genuine rush of emotions that come from living in the moment.

Bookend the trip with days off at home

Again, we understand this isn’t practical for everyone, especially those without paid time off work. But if you can swing it financially and professionally, consider taking two additional days off, one before the trip and one for when you get home. These extra days off come in handy for packing and preparing for your vacation, as well as adjusting to life back home upon your return.

Are you gearing up for a long overdue vacation? If so, you’ll be counting on it being a fun and enjoyable experience. But don’t take it for granted! Travelers have an obligation to take steps to ensure their trip is everything they want and more.

The Art of Choosing Your Next Travel Destination

' src=

Choosing your next travel destination doesn’t have to be daunting. This article gives you a concise guide to finding the perfect match for your travel style and desires. Whether you’re craving adventure, seeking solitude, or aiming to dive into cultural experiences, I’ll help you figure out how to choose your next travel destination.

Key takeaways

  • Consider your travel style to guide your destination choice.
  • Set a clear budget to help you choose your destination and avoid overspending.
  • Pick destinations that offer activities fitting your trip’s length, from a weekend to a month or more.
  • Plan your travel time by considering the weather, local events, and whether it’s the high or low season to weigh the pros and cons.
  • Take into account your travel companions’ likes and needs.

What kind of travel do you like?

When planning your next trip , it’s essential to ask yourself about the type of travel you enjoy. Are you the kind of traveler who revels in the buzz of a busy city, with visits to museums and cultural events? Or do you prefer the peace of a secluded beach or a mountain retreat? Your preference should steer your decision-making process here.

  • For those of you who lean towards active trips, consider cities renowned for their cultural landmarks and entertainment.
  • If, on the other hand, relaxation is your top priority for your next trip, finding destinations that promote leisure and provide opportunities for unwinding, such as quiet towns or mountain cabins, is key.
  • If you’re new to traveling, choose a travel style that lets you explore at your own pace, such as a road trip . Road trips offer flexibility, perfect for those new to travel planning.

Balancing your itinerary between sightseeing and relaxation is an art in itself; finding that sweet spot ensures you return from your holiday recharged and full of memories.

What is your travel budget?

Don’t skip over the important step of establishing your travel budget. It dictates not just where you can go but also your experiences once you’re there. Begin this process by deciding how much money you’re willing to spend on the trip; this includes all expenses, from flights and accommodation to food and activities.

Set a clear travel budget ahead of time to avoid overspending and feeling stressed or going into debt. I never recommend that you travel and worry about the expense later. I am a strong advocate for saving your full travel budget ahead of time and then paying cash for your trip.

Do some basic research to determine the travel costs at your destination. Some places are inherently more expensive, where a modest dinner might cost as much as a fancy meal elsewhere. Understanding these costs at your destination will help you make realistic daily spending plans.

At this point in your travel planning, you may need to reassess and choose a different destination for this trip, and that’s okay. Longer trips to more expensive destinations often require more financial pre-planning. For long trips, consider your budget and perhaps look into practical tips to afford more travel , as longer durations can significantly impact your travel expenses.

Researching and finding cheap flights can save you significantly. Flight costs vary greatly, and learning how to secure lower-priced tickets can substantially lower your overall expenses. Cheap flight services such as Going will do the hunting for you and alert you as deals come up.

For detailed steps, read my article about how to plan your travel budget .

How much time do you have to travel?

Evaluating the time you have available for travel is also important when choosing your next destination. If you’re only able to break away for a short weekend, picking a place that’s close by or a direct flight away will help you maximize your time away. If you plan a weekend getaway for your next trip , you might want to focus on destinations with activities and sights that easily fit into a two or three-day itinerary.

For those of you with more than a few days but less than two weeks, consider destinations that offer a mix of relaxation and exploration . This timeframe will give you enough time to immerse yourself in local culture and top attractions without the rush.

Should you be fortunate enough to dedicate several weeks to a month for your trip, you can dive into locations more extensively or take multi-destination trips. This freedom allows you to explore at a slower pace or add more variety to your trip.

What time of year are you traveling?

Deciding when to travel is just as crucial as choosing where to go. Each season brings its advantages and challenges, so consider what’s most important to you. Weather, local events, as well as peak and off-peak seasons, can all influence your decision.

Peak Season:

  • Advantages: Everything’s in full swing—attractions, tours, lodges, and restaurants are all open.
  • Drawbacks: Higher prices and larger crowds.

Off-Peak (Shoulder Season):

  • Advantages: Lower costs and fewer tourists.
  • Drawbacks: Some services and attractions might have limited availability.

Think about what you enjoy. Your preferences will guide your timing, so choose a time that aligns with your travel wishes. Remember, local conditions vary, so a little research goes a long way in making sure you have the best trip possible for you.

Who Are You Traveling With?

When picking your next vacation spot, it’s important to consider whether you’ll be traveling with companions and who they are.

  • Solo trips offer freedom. You get to make all the decisions, but won’t be with anyone to share your travel memories.
  • Traveling with a life partner can be romantic and fun.
  • If you’re bringing the family along , especially with children, you’ll be seeking out family-friendly destinations with activities for all ages.
  • Heading out with friends ? Or planning other group travel ? Coordinating everyone’s plans will be key. You’ll also need to consider everyone’s budgets and preferences and look for destinations with a variety of attractions.
  • A trip with elderly companions will require special considerations. Destinations should not be too strenuous and accommodations should offer easy accessibility.

Seek outside input and inspiration

For help with choosing your next travel destination, talk to friends and family members who travel; they can provide insights into places you might not have considered. Social media and Pinterest are treasure troves of ideas, where can get images and stories from other travelers to inspire you to try new places.

Join travel Facebook groups where travelers just like you share their experiences and advice. They’re great for getting a variety of opinions (wanted or unwanted, LOL). You might be encouraged to try a site or an attraction you would never have otherwise considered because it might not be as popular.

Old-fashioned travel guidebooks , too, haven’t lost their usefulness. Their curated itineraries and expert recommendations can help you discover hidden gems.

Keep a running travel bucket list

Your travel bucket list serves as a reminder of the places that you most want to visit over the next several years. It can be a mental bucket list or literal.

How to start? Begin by jotting down destinations that have always fascinated you. Maybe you’ve seen a movie set in a beautiful location, or you’ve always dreamed of snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. Include everything.

What should you consider?

  • Personal interests: Are you a history buff, a foodie, or an outdoor enthusiast? Tailor your list to what you love most.
  • Recommendations: Add places your friends rave about or destinations you come across in travel shows.

Your bucket list is not set in bronze. As your interests change and new destinations catch your eye, update your list. It’s a living, breathing list. It’s not meant to be rigid or prescriptive.

Organize and prioritize:

  • Must-visit : These are your dream destinations; they’re non-negotiable.
  • Up-and-coming: These are places gaining popularity that you want to visit sooner rather than later before everyone and their brother has already been there and it’s suffering from over-tourism.
  • Hidden gems : Lesser-known spots that appeal to you and promise a special experience.

Consider planning trips around events

Consider focusing on participating in events rather than just picking a destination. Imagine traveling for that “must-see” concert or attending a famous festival. The location of the show or festival becomes secondary to the experience you’re traveling for. Traveling for an event can often lead to discovering new destinations that might not have been on your radar initially.

If event-centered travel is something you’re interested in trying, make sure you do your research well ahead. Hotels in locations with popular major events can be booked well ahead. In addition, keep in mind that associated costs can often reflect the popularity of an event.

Keep some itineraries in your back pocket

It’s smart to prepare several travel plans in advance. I call this keeping a trip in your back pocket. This means having a few pre-planned itineraries to use when an irresistible travel invitation or deal comes up.

PRO TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

Go back to your travel bucket list and start planning itineraries for your “must-visit” spots. This isn’t about having every detail planned but about being prepared. Think about:

  • How many days you want to spend at your destination
  • Exactly which is the best airport(s) to fly into and out of for your itinerary
  • At least a few options for where to stay on your trip
  • Your top priorities for sites, tours, and activities

Keep your research and rough itineraries organized and accessible, maybe in an app like Notion, so when the opportunity comes, you’re all set.

Final thoughts about choosing your next trip destination

When you’re ready to pick your next vacation spot, remember to balance your desires with practical considerations. Let your interests guide you, but also think about factors like cost, safety, climate, and experiences. It’s your trip, so tailor it to your wishes, but don’t forget to check the practical boxes too. Your perfect destination is out there.

Advance Planning and Flexibility

Advanced planning and flexibility are first up on the list. When you plan ahead, you give yourself time to set a budget that you can stick to.

Probably one of the most important and easiest ways to save money on travel is to plan ahead.

This doesn’t mean that you need to book everything a year in advance (although sometimes that is needed), it means giving yourself enough time to save up and find the right deal.

Depending on the type of trip, I like to start planning around 10-12 months in advance. This gives me time to do my research and monitor for pricing.

This works well when I have a destination in mind but am not locked into travel dates.

Before you think about booking the trip, do your research on how much it will cost. It’s easier to plan if you know exactly how much you want to spend. Now, knowing how much you want to spend is not the same as how much you’ll actually end up spending.

It’s important that you anticipate and plan for unexpected expenses, so give yourself some wiggle room in the budget.

You can calculate your expenses by considering the amount of money you’ll need for airfare, rental car, meals, souvenirs, special excursions, or tickets to attractions. By doing research, you’ll be less likely to spend more than you can afford.

Decide what is most important to you and plan for it . For instance, if you’re traveling to a destination where you know that you want to splurge on excursions, research how much they will cost when you’re setting a budget.

Be flexible

The next part when thinking of ways to save money on vacation planning is to be flexible with your travel dates and destination. Many airlines and hotels offer discounts for travelers who are willing to be flexible with their plans.

For example, you may be able to get a discount on airfare if you’re willing to fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday instead of a Friday or Saturday (more on this later).

Or, you may be able to get a cheaper hotel room if you’re willing to stay off the beaten path.

Being flexible with your travel plans can also make it easier to find deals on activities and attractions.

For example, many museums offer discounts for visitors who come during off-peak hours. And, many theme parks offer discounts for visitors who are willing to come on weekdays instead of weekends.

And if you’re like me and enjoy using credit card points and miles to pay for travel (I’ll be covering this in more detail later in this post), planning ahead and being flexible can save you a lot of money .

I’ve been able to book destinations with the least amount of points possible by giving myself some time and flexibility.

Create a budget with YNAB and track your credit with Credit Karma

Ynab (you need a budget).

We’ve talked about creating a budget, but I know for some this can be easier said than done. It doesn’t have to be! I use an app like YNAB to help me create a budget for all of my expenses. How much do you think you spend on streaming services every month? I bet you have no idea!

When you know what you’re spending your money on, it’s easier to figure out how much you can afford for a vacation. I think it’s important to note that although YNAB may use the same level of security as your bank, it is not your bank, so keep in mind that it may mislabel purchases. So, it’s a good idea to check your purchases manually to allocate your budget properly.

One of the main reasons that people may not track their budget is likely because it can be time-consuming. A budget app can be a convenient option because it does all the heavy lifting.

In the end, an app like YNAB will keep you on top of your financial situation and help you save money!

Credit Karma

Credit Karma is a free online service and mobile app. It gives you access to your credit score and credit reports along with personalized recommendations to help manage your finances. I think it’s a great buddy to pair with YNAB.

If you’re planning or have several credit cards or lines of credit open, Credit Karma will help keep you on track without having to lift a finger! I’ve been using Credit Karma since I opened my first credit card (back in college, so a long time ago!) and I love how it will prompt me to consider shopping for lower car insurance or tell me to check a site to see if the state owes me money.

If you’re looking to buy a house or car, Credit Karma can help. If you find something incorrect on your credit report, Credit Karma can help. If you are not sure which is the next credit card that you can get approved for, Credit Karma can help. Need life insurance, Credit Karma can help!

With Credit Karma, you’ll have access to a wealth of possibilities and opportunities specifically tailored to you which can help you stay on top of changes and better understand how your credit score affects your financial life.

Both YNAB and Credit Karma are great apps to help you keep your finances on track. I’ve got a more comprehensive list of apps and sites in my Free Travel Hacking Cheat Sheet .

Limit your impulse purchases

Now, this one is definitely not easy, but it is simple and important.

You probably don’t want to think about it, but limiting your impulse purchases can really help you save money. I suggest giving yourself a limit of one impulse purchase per month or something really nice once a quarter.

When I find something I want as my “treat yourself” purchase, I try to make sure it’s on sale. If it’s not on sale, I either wait and watch or use one of my points or cash-back strategies (keep reading).

Never pay full price and if you do, make it count.

ways to save money

Get a side hustle

When I talk about side hustles, I’m not really talking about an active one like Instacart or Doordash. My ideal side hustles take as little effort as possible.

Check out what I mean below! If you like this, check out my post on 7 Easy Travel Hacking Strategies that don’t require credit cards .

Use Rakuten or BeFrugal to get cash back on purchases

Now that you have your budget established, make sure that when you are spending that money you’re also making money. A great way to do this is to use cash-back sites like Rakuten or BeFrugal.

My current favorite is BeFrugal. I use their Chrome extension and have their app downloaded on my phone.

Whenever I’m shopping online, the Chrome extension will let me know if I can get cash back and then will automatically apply it with the click of a button. Once the purchase is made, BeFrugal will send an email letting you know that you’ve earned cash back.

My advice would be to check the BeFrugal site or app before making a purchase because it will let you know which retailers are giving the most cash back.

When cashback is available to redeem, BeFrugal gives you plenty of options including direct deposit into your bank account. You can also choose a gift card payout which can come with even more cashback as a payout bonus. When I redeemed my cashback for a Sephora Gift card, I was given 6% more than if I had done a direct deposit into my bank.

So, if you’re ready to start getting paid to shop, sign up for BeFrugal and automatically get $10 cashback.

Rakuten is also great because you can earn American Express Membership rewards when you link your accounts. So if you have an American Express card, you should definitely join Rakuten now and earn $30 when you spend $30 !

But you don’t have to choose, join both programs and see which one works best for you!

Download Upside to get paid for shopping

Previously known as GetUpside – Upside is a free app that gives you cash back on gas and other everyday purchases.

I’ve used Upside for gas, restaurants, and grocery shopping. It can also be combined with a points credit card!

It’s easy, just go to the Upside app and claim a cash-back offer that is available in your area. Once you claim the offer, you will have a few hours to upload the receipt. After you’ve purchased gas, dined at the restaurant, or purchased groceries, you go to the app and upload the receipt. That’s it!

It will take a few days to get processed, but then you will see cashback within the app.

Cashback can be redeemed for gift cards or cashed out to your bank account or PayPal account. You will need a minimum of $10 in cash back before you can redeem.

You can earn even more by paying for your purchase with a points credit card!

Cha-ching! Sign up for Upside and get an extra $15/gallon in free gas when you use the app for the first time.

Get paid to answer surveys

Another idea is to answer online surveys. Yes, it may seem tedious, but trust me it’s worth it.

There are many companies that will pay you for your opinions, and this is a great way to make some extra money in your spare time.

There are a ton of survey companies out there and I’ve tried many of them. If you’re new to answering online surveys, I think you should start with Survey Junkie . Survey Junkie, is easy to join, not spammy, and has a wide variety of surveys and ways to earn points.

Whether you spend 2 mins or 2 hours answering surveys, you’ll earn points that can be redeemed later. You can go at your own pace. Some days I answer 10 surveys and other days I don’t answer any. It really is a great way to maximize your time.

Survey Junkie also has an app! So you can answer surveys from home while drinking your morning coffee, waiting at the doctor’s office, or boarding a plane. Super convenient.

Redeeming your points is easy! Payout options include Visa gift card, PayPal, Cash out with bank transfer, or redeemed for other gift cards. You only need $5 available to redeem which makes it even more convenient.

One of the best things about passive income streams is that they can provide you with money even when you’re not actively working. That’s why answering surveys can be such a great way to earn passive income.

Let’s get you making money with Survey Junkie !

Open a High Yield savings account

Investing in a high-yield savings account is a great way to save money and it’s easy!

Plus, if you need to access your money in a pinch, you can always withdraw it without penalty.

In addition, high-yield savings can earn you 20 to 25 times more than a standard savings account – per this article from Investopedia . Also, many do not require a high minimum balance or monthly maintenance fees.

With a high-yield savings account, you can earn interest on your deposited funds, which can help you reach your financial goals faster.

If you want some help deciding on which bank to open up a High-Yield Savings Account with, check out this article on the Best High-Yield Online Savings Accounts from Nerdwallet .

I have had an account with American Express for a few years now and I have been very happy with our return. I also have an American Express credit card and can access both accounts from the same app, which I love.

I know that there are many of us that do not have a lot of savings, but if you can afford a Starbucks coffee every day you can put a little bit away in a savings account.

And with no minimum balance or monthly maintenance fees, it’s a no brainer !

Automate your savings and invest at the same time

It can be hard to put money away to save. The best way I’ve learned how to save money without even thinking about it is to automate a small amount each week, month or quarter.

You can automate this with your bank into a savings account or you can use an app like Stash which will not only save your money but invest it too!

Stash will let you invest your money with as little as $5. Stash offers advice on how to grow your personal finances and open up a retirement account.

I’ve been using Stash for years and have always taken advantage of their auto stash option which will automate your savings and investments at the same time. Stash pricing plans are reasonable and their goal is to help you grow financially.

If you’re not sure how much you can afford, just think again about how much you spend on Starbucks each week and have one less coffee. 🙂 All jokes aside, you can start with just a few bucks each week, the key is to be consistent .

You likely won’t notice the amount leaving your bank account and then the next thing you know, you have enough for the vacation of a lifetime!

Shop around for Cheap flights

Airfares change daily, hourly, and sometimes even minute by minute, so you definitely want to shop around as a way to save money.

A great way is to use a travel aggregator website, such as Google Flights , Skyscanner or Kayak . These websites allow you to enter your travel dates and destination, and then they search multiple airlines to find the best price for you.

I set alerts through these sites so that I can monitor pricing and be ready to pounce when I find the right deal!

Nowadays, airlines are a lot more flexible with cancellations. Many will let you cancel for any reason within 24 hours of booking the flight. Most will even let you cancel later for credit towards future travel with no penalties. These credits may expire at some point, but the airlines are getting more flexible with this too!

So don’t feel bad about booking a great deal as soon as you see it. You don’t have anything to lose!

I need to clarify that, while it’s a good idea to use these websites to get the best deal, you should always book directly with the airline. This way, you can be sure that you’re getting the most accurate flight information. If you need to make changes or a flight gets canceled, you’ll be able to deal with the airline directly.

Trust me, you don’t want to deal with a 3rd party when your flight gets canceled.

Additionally, many airlines offer loyalty programs and other perks when you book directly with them. So, next time you’re looking to book a flight, remember to go straight to the source!

If you’re looking for more guidance on destinations and which ones have the best deals from your home airport, I recommend signing up for Scott’s Cheap Flights (now Going). Scott’s Cheap Flights sends you deal alerts for flights and tips for the best way to book them. You can sign up for their free program or their premium program .

Also, look at one-way flights when possible, so you can compare prices easier. You’d be surprised at how booking one-way flights can really help with the price tag. When it comes to ways to save money on travel plans, being flexible and setting flight alerts are super important!

Also, check out my post on 5 big mistakes to avoid when booking flights . But first, keep reading.

Apply for a points credit card

This one is hands down my favorite because it’s probably the most passive way to save money on the list. By using a points credit card, you’re earning points on purchases that you are already making. What’s not t0 love about that?

You can use these points to pay for travel by transferring points to travel partners like airlines or hotels. Other ways include booking travel through their portal, redeeming gift cards, or applying for a statement credit.

A welcome offer or sign-up bonus can make it very easy to earn enough points to cover travel expenses. We’ve been able to earn enough to cover a week-long hotel stay or roundtrip flights to Europe.

A credit card will award you a signup bonus if you make the minimum spend required for that particular offer. This can easily be done if you have a big purchase coming up or by using the credit card for all of your bills (when you can) and everyday shopping like groceries and gas.

There are a ton of awesome credit cards that will give you points when making a variety of purchases. I personally have several credit cards that I use depending on the type of purchases that I am making. Some credit cards will give you more points for dining, travel, groceries, or even gas.

There’s definitely a big element of strategy when it comes to the credit card points game. For an in depth analysis of which credit cards are best for you, I highly recommend subscribing to The Points Guy , they have a great article for beginners . They have a large team located around the world conducting all the research and do an amazing job of breaking it all down.

But don’t get discouraged.

Even if you don’t understand all of the valuations or don’t have a complex strategy, you can still take advantage and earn enough points to pay for travel.

If you don’t have a lot of credit cards and are nervous about applying for one, that’s ok. I started off small by applying for a cash-back credit card that did not require an annual fee.

Once I realized how much I could do with points earned on purchases that I was already making, I was hooked. I have since been able to expand to other cards with annual fees, but more perks.

My biggest advice would be to not bite off more than you can chew. You must always pay off your monthly statement balance . The only exception is if your card offers an introductory 0% APR, but even then it’s best practice to pay off the balance every month.

It does not make sense to pay high-interest rates. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it with a credit card. And if you’re applying for a credit card that has an annual fee, make sure to do your research and take advantage of all the perks that come with the card. That is the only way to realize the full value of this strategy.

If you’re afraid that applying for new cards will negatively affect your credit score, this is a myth. Opening up a new credit card is only one small factor when calculating your credit score. So what are you waiting for?! The world of credit card travel hacking awaits you!

The future of travel: What to expect on your next trip

As part of the world’s largest private education company, EF Go Ahead Tours is the leader in guided, educational group travel.

What will travel look like? How has travel changed? What is the future of the travel industry? All of these questions (and more!) are top-of-mind for people looking to plan a future trip. That’s why we called in three of our travel industry experts. Go Ahead President Heidi Durflinger, Vice President of Travel Roland Roth, and Senior Vice President of Land Operations Matts Stenbäck are here to give you some answers and insight into the future of travel.

Current travel trends

Our community, and travelers across the globe, are looking forward to when they can start stamping their passports again. Here are some current travel trends that are helping us better understand what the future of travel will look like.

  • 60% of our travelers said they plan to travel internationally within the next 9–18 months
  • 30% of our travelers said they want to travel more in 2021 compared to 2019
  • Monitoring overseas travel regulations, planning for the unexpected, and knowing which tourist attractions are going to be open are the top three reasons travelers are hesitant to plan a future trip right now
  • Multi-country trips are by far the most popular, with 75% of our travelers looking to travel on this type of guided tour
  • The six countries travelers want to visit most in 2021 are Italy, England, France, Greece, Ireland, and Germany
  • The top five things people miss most about traveling are exploring new destinations, experiencing a new culture, social interactions with other travelers, educational opportunities, and the excitement of preparing for the trip

How has travel changed

We know dealing with airports and airlines can sometimes feel like the hard work you have to do before you get to enjoy the fun of a vacation. Right now, airlines are doing all they can to make your journey safe and streamlined.

“Most airlines have teamed up with medical experts and cleaners to come up with science-based and best-in-class health and safety protocols,” said Roland. “For example, Delta works with the Mayo Clinic and Lysol. American works with Vanderbilt University and Purell, and United has partnered with the Cleveland Clinic and Clorox.”

Here are some tips from Roland, our Vice President of Travel, to make your flight journey easier as you prepare for a future trip.

Before you get to the airport

  • Review the latest health and safety guidelines for your airline operator. They may be different from carrier to carrier and can change frequently.
  • Expect a health check either online or at the airport. It’s usually a set of questions about face coverings, your health, and any symptoms or exposure you may have had. Temperature checks may also become a mainstay in the U.S., as they have in Canadian airports.
  • Plan for extra time . The lines will likely move slower and get longer as more people begin to travel again.

At the airport

  • Use the airline’s mobile app to make sure all of the info you have is up to date. This will also reduce the number of people touching your boarding pass.
  • Check your bag and print your tag at the kiosk . You can check the airline’s mobile app to see if this is something they allow. You’ll still have the option to check-in like normal if you’re more comfortable with that!
  • Pack a face mask . “It’s very likely you’re required to wear a mask or a face covering the moment you step foot into an airport,” said Roland. Plus, there will be lots of signage to aid in social distancing efforts.
  • Bring some snacks . Think: Protein bars, trail mix, and crackers. Depending on the day and time you fly, some of the restaurants and lounges may be closed or operate at reduced capacity. Bringing your own food means you won’t have to worry about being hungry before your flight.

On the plane

  • Be prepared to board from back to front . Even when more people start flying, you should expect to wait a little longer than normal to board the plane.
  • Wear your mask at all times , except when eating and drinking. This is an added layer of protection, on top of the aircraft’s filtration system. These systems use the same technology as what you’d find in hospitals, which has been standard on airplanes since the late 90s.
  • Expect reduced in-flight service and interactions between customers and flight attendants.
  • Know that most airlines will likely begin selling middle seats again . While some carriers, like Delta, announced that they won’t fill middle seats through the end of 2020, you’ll find that most middle seats will be filled, especially on international flights.

Future trends in the tourism industry

If you’re asking yourself, “how has travel changed,” one of the biggest travel trends is the popularity of guided travel. Not only are all the logistics handled by experts, you’ll have locals leading you every step of the way.

“The local experts are born in many of these destinations you’re traveling to,'“ said Matts. “They’re also now going to be local experts on the rules and regulations that may be a little bit different in these places and they’ll make sure anyone traveling on our tours are clear about what’s going on in each destination and if there’s anything special to follow there.”

Here are some of the ways your guided travel experience will reflect the future of travel according to Matts Stenbäck, our Senior Vice President of Land Operations.

  • Expect social-distancing measures to be in place at hotels . Chairs will be spread apart at the pool, tables at breakfast will be spaced out more, and you’ll likely talk with the front desk staff from a little farther away. Many of the same amenities will be available, just with a little bit more space for you to enjoy them.
  • In-house cleaning measures at hotels are similar to what you’ll see on airplanes . You’ll see staff around the hotels more frequently to make sure high-touch surfaces, like banisters and doorknobs, are being constantly cleaned. “Many of our bigger hotel chains are working with partners across the industry to make sure that they have really, really safe procedures in place—especially when it comes to that enhanced cleaning,” said Matts.
  • Buses will be thoroughly cleaned before you get on and throughout the tour. Bus travel is one of the main ways travelers get from point a to point b while on a guided tour. Since group tours are one of the future trends in the tourism industry, bus travel will be a key part of the on-tour experience. These cleaning measures on buses will be similar to what you find in hotels, with special attention being given to high-touch surfaces.
  • Hand sanitizer! It will be available throughout the hotels, and on the buses. Plus, airlines are allowing travelers to bring a travel-sized bottle with them on the flight.
  • Smaller group sizes. Thanks to our Right Size Advantage, we’ve always capped our tours at 14 to 38 travelers—well below the industry average of 45. As we look forward to traveling again, we’re doing all we can to continue keeping your tour size small, and the memories big. “We are going to be running tours with smaller numbers. You should expect a smaller group and more space and room on the bus,” said Go Ahead President Heidi Durflinger.
  • Off-season travel is one of the rising future travel trends . Since the exact size of your group will depend on when you travel. We recommend traveling in the off-season . In Europe, that’s anytime between October and March. Not only will your group likely be smaller, you’ll enjoy perks like smaller crowds, lower prices, and all-around amazing experiences.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse to cross over the U.S.

Eclipse playlist: Fans return to Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' ahead of total solar eclipse

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Pets and the eclipse: Will my pets be safe during the April 2024 solar eclipse? What experts say.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

Before Silicon Valley trip, Murphy touts NJ's AI sector at Princeton summit

4-minute read.

next trip ahead

Gov. Phil Murphy will head to Silicon Valley and Hollywood in California this weekend in a bid to pitch New Jersey’s film and high tech sectors — especially artificial intelligence — to businesses out west.

On Thursday, Murphy addressed an artificial intelligence summit hosted at Princeton University — a sector he’s referred to as a “moonshot” industry in the Garden State.

“We’re coming together to think ahead about one of the most positive and promising and potentially disruptive developments in human history,” the governor said Thursday afternoon.

New Jersey, Murphy continued during his keynote address, is “perfectly positioned to lead the way in harnessing generative AI to address some of our world’s greatest challenges.”

Murphy’s economic mission will run April 14 to 17, according to business magazine ROI-NJ . It will feature the first lady, Tammy Murphy, as well as Tim Sullivan, head of the state Economic Development Authority, and Wesley Matthews, head of Choose NJ, a nonprofit started by former Gov. Chris Christie to pay for the governor’s economic missions .

Choose NJ spokesperson Ingrid Austin said the trip will take Murphy and his entourage through Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay area and Hollywood in Los Angeles, and that the nonprofit will pay for this trip.

“While industries like filmmaking and technology have long found a home on the West Coast, the truth is today, there is a whole new world of opportunity opening up right here in the Garden State,” Murphy, a Democrat, said last month in Atlantic City .

What is AI? What's it used for?

AI, and more specifically generative AI, is a technology that processes data from the internet like a human brain to create content — text, pictures, video, music — based on users' instructions.

Its emergence has meant that suddenly people who weren't computer scientists and didn't know how to write code could get their computer to perform tasks in seconds that would have take them minutes, hours or days to do in the past: respond to emails, write marketing brochures, design a magazine cover.

Technological applications in AI could range from fusion control to the power grid, chip design, home assistants and surgery, said Mengdi Wang, an associate professor at Princeton University’s Center for Statistics and Machine Learning.

Generative AI could be used for more mundane tasks that could otherwise take hours or days, and data searching becomes easier.

At the forefront was OpenAi , a company based in San Francisco that was founded in 2015 to create a generative AI platform available to the public.

Its financial backers have included Elon Musk, Amazon and Microsoft. And it has rolled out ChatGPT, which generates text, and DALL-E , which generates digital images, with new versions providing increasingly human-like responses.

A recent report by the Pew Research Center found that 23% of American adults have used AI chatbot ChatGPT, up from 18% last July.

“It’s like a Wild West,” said Aaron Price, chief executive officer of Tech United, a trade group for New Jersey’s high-tech industry. “Parts of the technology are very mature, parts of the technology are immature.”

Comes with major downsides, needs 'guardrails'

The technology comes with massive downsides.

The federal Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency warned that ahead of the 2024 elections , generative AI could be used by foreign adversaries, cybercriminals and any member of the public to depict political figures in compromising positions or saying controversial statements that they didn’t actually make.

USA TODAY reported on the prevalence of AI-generated nude images of famous and non-famous people alike. Graphic images generated of Taylor Swift were one glaring example. ChatGPT meanwhile has been used to generate academic essays by students, essentially cheating.

“It needs some guardrails,” Teik Lim, president of the Newark-based New Jersey Institute of Technology, said in an interview last month.

AI-generated content could, for example, be required to display a prominent disclaimer that it is AI-generated, Lim said.

Kristin Dana, a computer engineering professor at Rutgers University, said that in some cases, AI might have trouble with such basic tasks as discerning between a school bus and an ostrich, given the right conditions.

“Deep learning can fail in surprising ways,” she said at the Princeton summit, in reference to the process by which AI teaches something to a computer.

What's NJ doing with AI?

In December, Murphy and Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said they would establish an AI hub at the Ivy League school. It would, under the plans, bring jobs and economic development while pushing forward the state’s AI industry.

New Jersey has an artificial intelligence task force , which is responsible for analyzing the potential social impacts and risks that come with artificial intelligence. The task force is also responsible for educating the state’s workforce and offering recommendations to authorities.

Fairleigh Dickinson University's Madison campus is sponsoring a contest for middle school and high school students worldwide to create content using ChatGPT , the free AI system.
