Generally, the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) seasons offer pleasant weather with mild temperatures, making it a popular time to explore the city. The springtime brings blooming flowers and is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities. Fall offers comfortable temperatures and lower tourist crowds, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

My favorite time to visit is early winter, during the holidays, when the River Walk is adorned with Christmas lights. It is truly a sight to see! However, San Antonio gets very busy during this time as well.

How Many Days In San Antonio Is Enough?

Deciding how many days in San Antonio is enough depends on what you want to do. While I highly recommend doing everything I mentioned in my things to do list above, I know that list is extensive and cannot be completed in a day.

However, you can do a lot on a weekend, so I recommend spending 2-3 days in San Antonio. This will allow you to see all the most famous landmarks, eat some delicious Tex-Mex food, and give you the urge to come back and see more of what San Antonio has to offer!

San Antonio Weather

San Antonio experiences hot and humid summers, especially from June to August, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F (32°C). If you don’t mind the heat and want to take advantage of water activities or indoor attractions, summer can still be an enjoyable time to visit.

Winter (December to February) in San Antonio is relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from the 40s°F (4-9°C) to the 60s°F (15-20°C). It can occasionally get chilly, but it’s generally a pleasant season for exploring outdoor attractions without the crowds.

Where To Stay In San Antonio

In a big city like San Antonio, there are plenty of places to stay. You will find many options based on what area you want to stay in and your budget.

How To Get Around Antonio

San Antonio is a large city with its landmarks and attractions spread out around town. 

If you are staying downtown, the best way to get around is by foot. There are so many attractions and things to do downtown that you don’t need to leave the area to have fun!

Uber is also readily available, however, on weekends, holidays, or when big events are in town, Uber’s tend to take longer to get and prices skyrocket! Be ready to pay up or wait for the surge to go down.

In my opinion, the best way to see San Antonio is by car . This will give you the freedom to venture out and do as much as you want whenever you want!

We know that our passengers have questions about how COVID-19 is impacting the airport and what SAT is doing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The safety and well-being of our passengers and employees is our number-one priority.

To ensure that passengers feel confident while traveling, SAT joined the Greater. SAfer. Together. pledge (in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance) aims to protect the health and safety of employees and customers and instill community confidence.

Facility Actions

What is SAT doing to protect passengers and employees?

• Frequent Cleaning and Disinfecting - Frequent cleaning practices continue in all public spaces and restrooms. and additional hand sanitizers were installed throughout the airport.
• Protective Shields  - Plastic Shields are installed in high-traffic areas, including ticket counters, retail shops and restaurants.
• Social Distancing  - Signage and floor markings throughout the terminal will give guidance on six-foot distancing in common areas.
• Xenex LightStrike Robot - SAT is the first airport in the world to purchase and deploy the Xenex LightStrike robot – the only ultraviolet (UV) room disinfection technology proven to deactivate SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

COVID-19 Testing

The San Antonio International Airport currently offers a no out-of-pocket cost, PCR testing clinic provided by Curative for the passengers and airport employees. It is located at Terminal B curbside - column marker B18 and open Monday - Sunday 8am - 6pm. Book an appointment at curative.com .

Social Distancing Efforts

Working with TSA, we have made some adjustments to the lines as you approach the security checkpoints to provide more space between lines of passengers. To provide additional space between the passengers in front of you and behind you, we ask everyone to practice social distancing and spread out rather than crowd other passengers nearby. Additionally, footprint markers have been placed on the floor near ticket counters, information booths and in other areas of queueing to indicate where people should stand.

Travel Restrictions

The airport remains open and flights are arriving and departing daily. However, airlines have drastically reduced their flight schedules, so we encourage passengers to check directly with their airline regarding flight status and face mask requirements.

Real ID Enforcement

The October 1, 2020, deadline for  REAL ID  has been delayed to October 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 Testing Requirements for International Passengers

All air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before they board a flight to the United States.

Travelers should expect to:

• Keep possession of their boarding passes.

Many of SAT’s retail shops and restaurants have made changes to their operations. Some have reduced their operating hours, some have closed temporarily, and others remain open with a focus on more takeout options to serve our passengers and employees who do not have anywhere else to purchase food. The airport has asked every retail outlet to maintain social distancing.

Getting Around San Antonio

The best way to get around San Antonio is by car, especially if you need to reach sites like Morgan's Wonderland  and Six Flags Fiesta Texas . Driving through the narrow downtown streets can be difficult, however, so plan to park your car in a lot or garage and explore some of the downtown area on foot. The bus system is also a handy and relatively inexpensive way to navigate the city center. Many travelers arrive through San Antonio International Airport (SAT), about 10 miles north of downtown, where you can find a plethora of rental car agencies. Several hotels also offer courtesy shuttles to and from the airport. City bus route No. 5 also services the airport and downtown areas. Taxis from the airport to downtown San Antonio cost between $24 and $29. Using taxis downtown is unnecessary, and you'll probably have to wait for one to arrive.

As the most famous building in Texas, it’s safe to say that visiting the Alamo in San Antonio is a right of passage for Texans, as well as an extremely popular attraction for visitors.

Even if you have never laid eyes on the famous mission (or what’s left of it, anyway), odds are that you have heard the battle cry “Remember the Alamo!” associated with Texas.

Like so many people who lived within driving distance at the time, my first visit to the Alamo took place on a 4th grade Texas history field trip.

I’ve visited several times as an adult since, most of them while living in San Antonio.

Here’s what to know about visiting the Alamo in Texas–plus what exactly it is in the first place!

A (Very) Brief History of the Alamo in Texas

Exploring the history of the Alamo in detail is an extremely complex topic–and, as you might imagine, the legend of the Alamo as explored in movies, shows, and art throughout Texas leaves an enormous amount of nuance and downright fact out of the story.

Without getting too into the weeds (there’s plenty of time for that when you visit the Alamo, though this article is a good primer), here are the basics of how the Alamo became such a cultural symbol in Texas.

The Alamo–then known as Mission San Antonio de Valero–was first established by Franciscan monks in 1718 for the explicit purpose of converting local Native people to Catholicism.

In 1793, the mission was secularized and became a town, Pueblo de Valero.

After the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821), the Alamo was occupied by the Mexican army.

When Mexico won independence, many Anglo-American settlers were invited into Texas, with the explicit stipulation that they follow Mexican law. Many came; few wanted to be ruled by Mexico.

In February 1836, roughly 200 people defended the Alamo in the name of an independent Texas against 5,000 soldiers for the Mexican army, led by General Santa Anna.

187 men–among them Texas legends such as Davy Crockett, William B. Travis, and James Bowie–perished defending the Alamo (though it’s worth noting that how, exactly, they lost their lives probably doesn’t live up to the legend ).

A month later, further south, General Sam Houston and his army fought the decisive Battle of San Jacinto, shouting “Remember the Alamo!” as they did.

The Battle of San Jacinto led to the capture of General Santa Anna, and the formation of the Republic of Texas.

Essential Tips for Visiting the Alamo, San Antonio

Schedule your timed entry in advance..

Touring the Alamo is free, however, touring the church itself (also called the shrine) requires a pre-booked timed entry slot .

This is done to reduce crowds and definitely improves the experience.

I vividly remember standing in a very long, very hot, line before this system was put in place, though the line area is at least shaded.

However, it does mean that an Alamo tour requires a bit of advance planning these days.

… and book an early time slot if you can.

… you know, at least for the vast majority of the year when it’s hot in San Antonio!

Luckily the church is air-conditioned, but the bulk of your visit to the Alamo will be spent outside.

Expect a small building.

One of the most common comments made by people visiting the Alamo for the first time is simply, “It’s so small!”.

And it’s true. 

Much of the land that once made up the Alamo has been absorbed by San Antonio, leaving only the church and a small surrounding area to observe today.

Add in the fact that the tiny stone church is dwarfed by the modern buildings that surround it, and it’s safe to say that the Alamo isn’t overwhelming in appearance these days!

… But the shrine isn’t all there is to see.

From cannons to gardens to live historical re-enactors, there is lots to see at the Alamo, even if the site is fairly compact in size.

No photos are allowed inside the church.

The grounds, however, are fair game!

It’s an excellent way to put a visual to the history of the Alamo.

Don’t only visit the Alamo.

The Alamo is one of only five historic Spanish missions in San Antonio, and while the Alamo is certainly the most famous, it’s not necessarily the most impressive!

Housed in the center of town, much of the land that once made up the Alamo has been consumed by San Antonio, leaving a fairly small park in its place.

In some of the other missions, however, the overall picture of the mission itself is still much more apparent.

Today, it’s surrounded by modern buildings and tourist attractions, giving the (accurate) impression that the city literally grew up around it.

What else can you do near the Alamo in Texas?

Thanks to its central location, you can find many of the best things to do in San Antonio near the Alamo–many of them within walking distance!

The River Walk, La Villita, the San Fernando Cathedral, and the Briscoe Western Art Museum are all located within a 15-minute walk of the Alamo, just to name a few.

Kid-friendly (and importantly, air-conditioned) spots such as Ripley’s Believe it or Not! and Legoland are also very close to the Alamo.

Is the Alamo a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes, it is!

The San Antonio Missions, encompassing all five historic Spanish missions in the city, are collectively recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site .

What about the other San Antonio Missions?

The other 4 missions in San Antonio are Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission Espada, and Mission San Juan Capistrano, and each and every one of them is well worth visiting.

Like the Alamo, a visit to the San Antonio Missions today primarily means visiting the remains of the churches, though the spaces were initially much larger.

However, you can get much more of a feel for the 18th-century history of the missions at the non-Alamo properties.

Mission San José was partially rebuilt during the 1930s and gives the best example of the size of a Spanish mission in the 18th century.

The missions are all connected to each other via a hiking and biking trail and each is located roughly 2.5 miles from the next.

If the weather is not too hot, renting bikes to travel between the missions is a fun way to explore San Antonio (if the weather is unpleasantly hot, you may prefer to drive between some of the missions).

If you take the audio tour and peruse all of the exhibits, you can easily spend a couple of hours making your way through all the things to do at the Alamo.

On the flip side, if you have limited time in San Antonio and only want to take a look at the front facade of the famous church, you can visit the Alamo in just 5 minutes.

An average Alamo tour tends to fall somewhere between those two extremes.

The Riverwalk

The Riverwalk in San Antonio is a major attraction, however, you should be careful if you decide to go. Since there are no railings except for in front of the restaurants, you should stay away from the edge. Each year, over 500 people fall in the river. You should also avoid this area after dark because it is a very common place for muggings. If you must be down there after dark, you should stay in highly populated areas and don’t go alone.

There are certain neighborhoods in San Antonio where the crime rate is the highest and you should avoid them if at all possible The neighborhoods with the highest crime rates are Westwood Village, the Southeast side, Palm Heights, Thompson Community, and Government Hill.

Despite what’s portrayed in TV shows and movies, San Antonio is a relatively safe place to live. In fact, it ranks eighth in the list of safest major cities in the US out of 32.

For the most part, visitors and locals are under the protection of the city’s vigilant and friendly police force. However, this city isn’t perfect; it still experiences hundreds of daily crimes. This article discusses everything you need to know about staying safe in San Antonio, including important statistics to consider before visiting or moving to the city.

Is San Antonio Safe?

The San Antonio police reported 10,874 violent crime offenses in 2021, which is about 3% less violent crimes in 2020 at 11,252.

Property crime has significantly increased, however; 60,745 in 2021 as opposed to 54,826 in 2020.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 99,218 registered sex offenders are in Texas.

Of this, about 3,750 sex offenders live in this city. That’s a ratio of 1 offender per 400 or so residents. Most offenders live in suburban areas like Live Oak and Leon Valley.

Helotes is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in San Antonio, not only because of its beautiful homes and friendly community but also because of its low violent crime rate.

Compared to the San Antonio average of 28.6, Helotes has a violent crime rate of only 9.5.

The property crime rate in the area is 28.8, as opposed to the San Antonio average of 52.8.

With a population of just over 10,500 people, Fair Oaks Ranch is home to high-end luxury homes, quality shopping and dining, and many golf courses.

With a violent crime rate of 7.9 and a property crime rate of 11.7, it ranks high in Texas’s ten safest places to live.  

With a population of about 5,000 people, Bulverde offers a quiet, rural feel to most of its residents. It’s a beautifully developed area and provides top-tier schooling, homes, shopping, and eating places to fulfill your needs.

This small city has a violent crime rate and property crime rate of 10.3 and 28.5 respectively.

What Are the Most Dangerous Neighborhoods in San Antonio?

San Antonio is considered a safe travel destination in the US, but some neighborhoods are more dangerous than others. Luckily, there are not a lot of “deadly” neighborhoods in this city. Two, in particular, stand out from the rest:

Located on the right side of southeast Texas, Pecan Valley is a lower-middle-income neighborhood with a population of 12,600. It’s a generally nice place, with mid-century modern-style homes and good amenities.

Unfortunately, the small city of Pecan Valley is no stranger to shootings, gang dealings, drug trafficking, and violent crimes. A report delivered by San Antonio police states that the violent crimes in Pecan Valley at the end of 2019 were 555% greater than the national average.

The property crime rate and violent crime rate of East Terrel Hill are 465% and 671% greater than the national average, respectively. This makes it one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in San Antonio and the whole of Texas.

The chance of being a property or violent crime victim is 1 in 30.

Though San Antonio is the eighth safest major city in the US, it falls near the bottom of the list of the safest cities in Texas. This doesn’t necessarily mean that this city isn’t a safe place to retire since some neighborhoods are safer than others, but it isn’t a good first choice for retirees looking for a peaceful, crime-free life. The safest city in Texas to retire is Fulshear, with a violent crime rate of 0 per 1000 people.

According to Neighborhood Scout, a nationwide database for crime data, the chances of becoming a victim of either property or violent crime is 1 in 124, a bit less than in other major cities.

One of San Antonio’s most famous attractions is the San Antonio Riverwalk, a meandering path that takes you along miles of scenic riverfront. But is the San Antonio Riverwalk safe?

The San Antonio Riverwalk is very safe. The Riverwalk is a bustling tourist attraction that is frequently patrolled by the San Antonio Police Department, which keeps a watchful eye on the crowds. An ingenious series of dams and tunnels prevent the river from flooding. So you’ll be safe on the Riverwalk.

The San Antonio Riverwalk

The San Antonio Riverwalk is a 15-mile-long urban walking path that follows the course of the San Antonio River as it winds through downtown.  Visitors can take in the beautiful sights of the river while enjoying easy access to top-tier attractions, including the Alamo , a  public art garden , and plenty of local food and drink. Also known as the Paseo Del Rio, the Riverwalk is one of the largest environmental attractions in the United States.

To get to the Riverwalk, simply head downtown and find one of the  parking areas . Much of the Riverwalk is ADA-accessible, so visitors who have wheelchairs or other equipment can enjoy the splendor of the river too.

One of the best ways to enjoy the Riverwalk is to  take a river cruise . If you’re a curious person who wants to know about the history of this area, take a narrated river cruise, where your captain will tell you all about San Antonio’s colorful past. If you just want to get from point A to B, many water taxis and ferries go from point to point along the Riverwalk.

The Riverwalk is a fun destination any time, but it hosts many major celebrations throughout the year.  For example, there is an  Armed Forces River Parade  every July to celebrate our veterans, plus holiday celebrations, a Margarita Madness food tour, and artisan shows. The Riverwalk has something for everyone.

Safety on the Riverwalk

But you might be wondering, is the Riverwalk safe? Unfortunately, major tourist attractions often attract nefarious characters like pickpockets, thieves, and muggers. So, how worried about your safety should you be on the Riverwalk?

San Antonio does have a  relatively high crime rate .  So while there are some thefts along the Riverwalk, your risk is not much greater than at any other major urban attraction . However, like with any statistical data, a deeper dive will help you decide your actual risk.

If you crave more details, the San Antonio Police Department has a  LexisNexis map  that allows you to filter crime data by location, crime type, date, and so on, so you can explore crime data in real-time to familiarize yourself with the area.

The San Antonio Police Department also posts its  Uniform Crime Reports  on a free, public web page. Violent crimes, such as robbery, assault, rape, and murder, are fairly uncommon in San Antonio.

According to the numbers, most of San Antonio’s crimes are small-scale petty thefts. These crimes are easy enough to avoid if you take some common-sense safety measures. Lock your car doors, keep valuables out of sight, and be aware of your surroundings. Don’t leave your purse, phone, wallet, or keys unattended in a bar or restaurant. Basic self-awareness will help prevent many crimes.

Police Presence in San Antonio

San Antonio is a well-policed city.  The  San Antonio Police Department  has beat cops working on foot patrol and road patrol, plus bicycle units and special divisions that patrol locations like the Riverwalk.

The SAPD engages in traditional policing, but also engages in community outreach and community-based policing in an effort to cultivate a good relationship between the police and the community they serve.

Personal Safety in San Antonio

If you happen to become sick or suffer an injury while visiting San Antonio, be assured that there are many fine hospitals in the city. The closest emergency rooms to downtown are the  Baptist Medical Center Emergency Room  and the  Methodist Hospital Metropolitan Emergency Room .  

While the Riverwalk is very safe, you should be aware that many sections of the Riverwalk do not have railings preventing you from falling in.  About 500 people a year end up falling into the river, but you can easily avoid falling in by using your common sense. Stay away from the river’s edge, don’t horse around on the embankments, and don’t try to reach into the river, and you should be okay.

The San Antonio Riverwalk is safe at night.  The Riverwalk is a major tourist attraction that is home to hundreds of small and large businesses that depend on safety to attract customers. 

The Riverwalk is frequently patrolled by the San Antonio Police Department and by the San Antonio Park Police, who have an entire unit dedicated to the Riverwalk.  As a result, the Riverwalk is a safe attraction.

That said, crime can happen even in the safest areas. The best way to avoid being a victim of crime is to take sensible precautions. Here are some tips to keep you safe on the Riverwalk:

• Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t be staring at your phone or needlessly distracted.
• If visiting a local bar or restaurant, don’t leave your drink unattended.
• Don’t flash expensive possessions or large amounts of cash.
• Don’t leave valuable items unattended.
• Travel with a companion. Groups are more difficult to victimize.
• Carry yourself with confidence .
• Listen to your gut. If a person or situation makes you feel uncomfortable, head for a populated and brightly lit place.

Does the San Antonio Riverwalk Flood?

The San Antonio River has occasionally flooded in the past. Like any other river, a massive inundation of rainwater could easily make the San Antonio River slip her banks and flood the city. Today, however, the river is protected by an ingenious flood-protection system.

When the Riverwalk was designed in 1929, engineer Robert Hughman realized that flooding would deter tourists from visiting the area. As such, he incorporated  41 separate dams along the river  that help maintain a stable water level. In addition, the dams divert excess water into a series of tunnels that lead away from downtown, helping to prevent flooding.

Does the system work? Yes! As recently as 2017, significant flood events that affected the San Antonio River did not cause flooding in any part of the Riverwalk or downtown San Antonio.  So you are safe from floods on the Riverwalk.  

Is the San Antonio River Natural or Man-made?

The San Antonio River is a natural river.  Originating from underground springs in San Antonio, the river naturally flows southwest, where it feeds into the Guadalupe River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico.  Parts of the river have been dammed or diverted, but the actual river itself is naturally occurring and not man-made.

The San Antonio River has been an important site for human activity for hundreds and hundreds of years. Before Texas was Texas, the river was used by indigenous people, Spanish settlers, and Mexican nationals. Most famously, the San Antonio River runs very close to the Alamo, the famous fort that was home to  a fierce battle  during Texas’ war for independence.

Can You Walk to the Alamo from the Riverwalk?

The Alamo is easily accessible from the San Antonio Riverwalk.  This historical destination is located about 5 minutes away from the downtown reach of the San Antonio Riverwalk. Exit the Riverwalk on East Commerce Street and head west, then take a right on Alamo Plaza. The famous fort will be just under a quarter-mile up Alamo Plaza.

Within walking distance of the Alamo, visitors will also find many fabulous tourist attractions, including the Shops at Rivercenter shopping mall, a Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, and a movie theater.

When is the Best Time to Visit San Antonio? 

The  best time of year to visit San Antonio  is during the off-season, between November and April. Visiting during the off-season lets you enjoy better weather, smaller crowds, and lower hotel prices. Plus, if you go during November or January, you can enjoy the scenic  Holiday Lights  that adorn the Riverwalk!

Many people go to San Antonio during the summer months, but we wouldn’t recommend it. Summer break tends to bring huge crowds, and it also brings Texas-style heat. So prepare for temperatures north of 100 degrees and humidity to match during the heat of the summer.

If you’re wanting to explore downtown San Antonio, it’s best to avoid using a automobile. The streets are narrow and difficult to navigate with a vehicle, and it’s easier to walk around. You could also go for a pedal-powered tour by renting a bicycle or making use of the city’s bike share service.

A scenic way to get around is to catch a river shuttle barge operated by Go Rio. Shuttle boats run about every 60 minutes, starting at 10 am. The boats ply the river through downtown north to the Museum Reach section of the River Walk. Single trip and day pass tickets are available.

Being careless on The River Walk

The River Walk, or Paseo del Río, is a scenic walkway that winds through the city for 15 miles along the San Antonio River. Found below street level, and accessible by steps, ramps and elevators, it's an easy pathway to navigate for most people.

The River Walk's shops, art galleries, restaurants and museums draw many visitors, so keep a close watch on your belongings when you’re in crowded places. With no railings along much of the walkway, you’ll need to keep an eye out as you wander to avoid a splash into the river. As well, there are no laws against walking around with alcohol here, so take special care if you’ve decided to explore with a boozy drink in hand (or just stay seated in a bar).

Expecting too much of The Alamo

The Alamo is San Antonio’s most famous landmark with an outsized place in Texas history as the site of an important battle in the fight for independence from Mexico. Some visitors might therefore expect to find a site as large as The Alamo's legacy, but this is not the case.

The Alamo's small size, combined with its lure as a historic site, makes it a busy place, so try to visit in the early morning or late in the day to avoid the crowds. It’s also worth a visit after dark, even though it’s closed to visitors at 5.30 pm. Pass by the Alamo at night to see its exterior lit up with a warm glow that’s hauntingly beautiful.

Not being prepared for the heat

Summer travel to san antonio can be sweaty.

San Antonio, for the most part, is a pleasant place to explore, with a mild climate that attracts visitors year-round. But be aware that, during the summer months, the weather can get extremely hot and humid. Add crowds of summer travelers to the mix and your visits to San Antonio’s sights and outdoor attractions could get very sticky and sweaty indeed.

If you visit San Antonio in the summer, make sure to bring along a water bottle when you travel around and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day. Or better yet, plan your visit during the cooler months of November through April.

Staying only at downtown hotels

Downtown San Antonio is a convenient location to stay, but hotel prices are at a premium here. Budget-minded travelers will find better value accommodations if they’re willing to look beyond the city centre.

King William district, about a 30-minute walk from downtown, is a more affordable area that’s also home to many regal-looking 19 th -century homes, so it's worth wandering around the area if you're staying here. The Pearl district is also worth a look, especially with the neighbourhood’s ongoing transformation from an industrial area into a creative and culinary hub. Families planning to visit Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park could save money and travel time by checking into a hotel in Northwest San Antonio.

Being too shy to ask for help

San Antonio is a diverse city that's known for its festive and friendly spirit. With its dash of Texas charm and openness to different cultures, it’s a place where most anyone from anywhere is made to feel welcome. So, if you’re new to the city, don’t hesitate to approach locals for assistance or even if you just want to strike up a conversation.

The city even has its own team of roving diplomats called the Centro Ambassadors who patrol the downtown streets on the lookout for anyone needing help. A visit to San Antonio could not be complete without first trying a puffy taco – a classic Tex-Mex dish that was born in the city in the 1950s. Puffy tacos are made with corn tortilla shells fried just so to create a puffy shape, which then forms a bed for a tasty mix of spicy beef or chicken, avocado, beans and veggies.  

The dish was created by the Lopez brothers who ran Ray's Drive In, which is still around today. Another Lopez brother branched out to open Henry’s Puffy Tacos, another popular puffy taco spot among many around San Antonio. Puffy tacos are so well-loved here that the mascot for a minor-league baseball team – the San Antonio Missions – is a puffy taco who dances and cheers with glee.

2 major, free events planned for downtown San Antonio this weekend. Plan ahead for traffic, construction

SAN ANTONIO – The streets of downtown San Antonio are expected to be busy this weekend due to major events and ongoing construction.

Two big, free festivals are taking place Saturday and Sunday — the Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair at Hemisfair’s new Civic Park and the Bud Light St. Patrick’s Festival across the street at La Villita.

Two St. Patrick’s Day river parades are also scheduled for Saturday, and the Dyeing of the River Green is scheduled three times over the weekend.

All the events are free, family-friendly and open to the public, meaning thousands of people are expected to head downtown for their end-of-spring-break fun.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a quick guide for navigating downtown traffic this weekend, starting with construction.

Construction downtown

Drivers and pedestrians can expect detours and closures along South Alamo Street near Hemisfair and La Villita.

Alamo Street is open to northbound and southbound traffic in that area, but there are lane closures as the strip from East Market Street to East Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard is being reconstructed.

It is one of several projects in the area: Construction is ongoing at The Monarch at Civic Park and Kimpton Santo along Arciniega Street .

Cesar E. Chavez is open to eastbound and westbound traffic at its intersection with Alamo Street, but the road is open to one lane in each direction.

Street and sidewalk closures may also be encountered near Alamo Plaza and on Broadway, Commerce and Santa Rosa streets.

City-owned parking garages

City officials often ask downtown visitors to use a ride share, or walk or bike to prevent traffic during major events. If you are driving, here are some city-owned parking garages in the area:

• Houston Street Garage at 111 College St.
• Convention Center Garage at 850 E. Commerce St.
• Martinez Lot at South Alamo and Martinez streets.
• Houston/Nolan Lot at E. Houston and Elm streets.
• City Tower Garage at 100 N. Main Ave.
• St. Mary’s Garage at 205 E. Travis St.

After the possibility of hail on Friday afternoon, the potential for much-needed rain will continue through the weekend.

A small severe threat is forecast for Saturday and Sunday, according to KSAT meteorologists. As a precaution, at least one big event — the Fest of Tails at McAllister Park — has already been postponed .

As of 10:20 a.m. Friday, neither the Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair or St. Patrick’s Day festivities have been canceled or postponed.

Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair

“The biggest weekend in Tejano music ” started on Thursday and continues through Sunday. It will include live music from more than 150 Tejano and conjunto artists across four stages.

Some of the artists include Jennifer Pena, Siggno, Stefani Montiel, Destiny Navaira, Asalto, Lucky Joe, Monica Saldivar, Conjunto Cats, Sunny Sauceda y Todo Eso, Gary Hobbs and more. Click here for a full schedule.

The family-friendly event is free and open to the public, and lawn chairs will be allowed.

The stages will be set near the Magik Theatre, the Tower of the Americas walkway, the Mexican Cultural Institute, and the new Civic Park.

The festival opens at noon and ends at 11:30 p.m.

St. Paddy’s Day festivities

Downtown San Antonio is gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day.

Visit San Antonio says the River Walk will be dyed green on Saturday and Sunday for the annual tradition.

The Dyeing of the River Green, sponsored by MadDogs, will take place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon along Museum Reach and 1-3 p.m. along the downtown stretch of the river. Also, on St. Patrick’s Day, the downtown portion of the river will be dyed again from 1-3 p.m.

The river has been dyed green, and jokingly renamed the River Shannon, every year since 1968.

The Bud Light St. Patrick’s Festival will take place at the Arneson River Theatre and La Villita from 1-6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. It’s free to attend and family-friendly.

On Saturday, there will also be a St. Patrick’s Day river parade from 2-3 p.m. along the Museum Reach and 5-6 p.m. along downtown. Both parades are free to attend.

The April total solar eclipse could snarl traffic for hours across thousands of miles

Millions of Americans will be looking to the sky during a rare total solar eclipse on April 8 , and experts warn the excitement could create dangerous and busy traffic conditions as people pack into the narrow band of the country with the best view.

"Pack your patience, whether traveling a great distance or locally, people will be out and about to catch a glimpse of the eclipse," said Aixa Diaz, a spokesperson for the American Automobile Association.

Roads could be especially packed at the center of the eclipse's path as Americans who want the best view crowd into cities, towns and remote areas, many without the infrastructure to handle big crowds.

A similar scenario played out in 2017 during the nation's last total solar eclipse , where congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after the totality of the eclipse, according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests that the worst of the traffic — both on big interstates and rural backroads — will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to exit all at once.

This year, in Ohio's Lorain County, county officials are warning residents to be aware about the increase in visitors, traffic and jammed roads — and possible cell phone signal drops.

“What we could have is crowds here that we’re not used to,” wrote Dave Freeman, the director of Lorain County Emergency Management. “We’re not set up infrastructure-wise for that, we don’t have the roads.”

Where will traffic be the worst during 2024 total solar eclipse?

Roads in states where sky gazers will travel to see the centerline of totality will be most prone to traffic jams.

Even though Oklahoma only has a small corner of the state in the path of totality, the state "is expected to receive an influx of anywhere from 17,000 to 66,000 visitors to watch the solar eclipse," reads an announcement from Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Officials there are warning residents "the large influx of visitors to southeastern Oklahoma could overwhelm and backup the area's road systems," including two-lane highways passing through small towns.

They advise residents to expect hotels and visiting areas at maximum capacity, increased traffic and delays in deliveries.

A coast-to-coast traffic nightmare What will the solar eclipse mean for drivers?

The last total solar eclipse snarled US traffic

Wyoming Department of Transportation spokesman Doug McGee said more than 536,000 cars filled the state's streets after the eclipse in 2017 and the state highway system "was taxed like it’s never been before," The Denver Post reported.

And "travel from Casper, Wyoming, to Denver, Colorado—normally a 4-hour trip—took 10 hours or more," according to an analysis of traffic from Transportation Research News.

The analysis's author Jonathan Upchurch said most sky gazers traveled to the paths of totality by car, "roadways experienced very little traffic congestion on the days leading up to totality" and "almost every Interstate route passing through the path of totality showed red on Google Traffic maps" after the eclipse reached totality.

The 2017 traffic woes followed warnings from officials .

Be careful if you're driving during the eclipse

Texas state officials are also warning drivers to "be on alert for distracted pedestrians looking to the sky." They also say drivers should not wear eclipse glasses, which block out most light, while driving.

Here's where and when to see it A total solar eclipse will cross the US in April

Officials there and elsewhere along the solar eclipse's line of totality are recommending drivers keep their headlights on, be mindful of pedestrians on the road and even stock up on essentials like fuel and food ahead of the eclipse.

AAA, which insures drivers across the country, is also warning people that sky gazers looking for a good view of the eclipse will be on the roads. They recommend drivers put their sun visors in their cars down to block their view of the sun and watch closely for pedestrian traffic.

How should Americans prepare for traffic jams?

AAA and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol suggest several ways Americans can prepare for traffic jams related to the solar eclipse:

• Plan ahead so you don't have to travel to errands or appointments around when the eclipse is happening.
• Don't pull over on the side of a road or highway to view the eclipse — Find a parking area instead.
• Fuel up before the eclipse and have some essentials on hand while traveling

When and where can you view the 2024 total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the sun's light , leading to a period of partial or full darkness on Earth.

The path of totality, where the sun is fully blocked, in the U.S. begins in Texas and the eclipse starts around 1:27 p.m. local time.

Cities on the centerline of the April 8 eclipse include Dallas, Texas , Cleveland, Ohio and Buffalo, New York, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
