Why Oxford, Mississippi, Is One Of The South's Most Magical Christmas Towns

places to visit in mississippi for christmas

Southern Snow Globe Weekend

Ballerinas and books, meandering and mrs. claus, a greek christmas, christmas in taylor, where to stay.

Visit Oxford

The twinkle of nostalgia is a delight usually reserved for people who have had the pleasure of living for a good long while. On occasion, however, even a very young person will come across a cozy home so full of warmth that it almost hurts to leave. Or perhaps they’ll linger long with friends and family over a meal that is so nurturing it feeds more than the belly. These moments are what Christmas is all about and the fine people of Oxford, Mississippi , tell that old, wonderful story with a felicity that's contagious every Christmas.

Oxford is an enjoyable town to visit in any season, but during the holidays, it’s downright enchanting. With the Courthouse standing proudly at the center of The Square and a flurry of boutiques, restaurants, and bookstores situated on all four sides, this Mississippi town is a holiday treat for Southerners of every generation. Of particular note is Neilson’s , which anchors the east side and also holds the marked distinction of being the oldest department store in the South. Roundabout mid-November, lights are strung into a canopy over The Square and the outdoor ice skating rink appears close by (a remarkable endeavor considering the town's winter temperatures). From gingerbread houses to visits with Santa, see why Oxford, Mississippi, is one of those holiday towns where even fast-paced, citified adults feel so very welcomed by the warmth of Christmastime that it almost hurts to leave.

Matt Nichols

Kick off the holiday season as the town is transformed into the Southern version of a snow globe the weekend of November 18-19. An ice carver will be carving, ice skaters will be skating, and the Ole Miss football team will have a home game against the University of Louisiana-Monroe. A special guest will light the Christmas tree on The Square while the Oxford Civic Chorus puts glitter in the air singing Christmas carols for all to hear. The Peppermint Trail will begin that weekend, and the town will officially ring in the Christmas fun.

Oxford is accustomed to being extra , so this year, there will be a slew of events that don’t appear on the typical town’s holiday schedule. For instance, children are invited to a reading of Jan Brett’s The Nutcracker complete with a real, live ballerina visiting just especially for this gathering all the way from Ballet Memphis. Oxford’s quintessential children’s bookstore, Square Books Jr. will host this special event on Saturday, December 9, from 10:00 a.m. til noon. And here’s your whisper of a hint: Tutus and costumes for photos with the Nutcracker ballerina are welcomed and encouraged.

Once the season-opening festivities are complete and the lights have all been lit, The Holiday Village at the Ford Center is a wonderful place to carry on the merriment. Gingerbread houses decorated by citizens and bakeries alike will be open for meandering guests alongside holiday-themed LEGO houses. International holiday traditions will be on display and Mrs. Claus is expected to lead story time! What a perfect way to spend a chilly December day.

The University of Mississippi sits just a couple of miles off The Square, and Ole Miss students create a strong and vivacious presence during the academic year. This year, Ole Miss ladies are making their mamas proud with their Christmastime brand of hospitality: The sororities of Ole Miss will be hosting the annual Holiday House Tour to help support Doors of Hope Transition Ministries , an organization dedicated to guiding homeless and at-risk homeless families towards self-sufficiency. Typically, this event features the lovely pied-à-terres of Oxford Square. But for an exciting twist, guests this winter will be inspired by the decor of the famed Greek houses lining Rebel Drive and Sorority Row. Doors open at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, 2023, and, knowing how Mississippi women have a way with sparkles, this event is sure to bring festive cheer.

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Oxford is Taylor, Mississippi , home of Taylor Grocery , which is known for serving “ the South’s best catfish .” Plein Air is a modern picket fence community built within Taylor whose residents are committed to true, old-fashioned community living. Every holiday season Plein Air welcomes visitors from far and wide for their annual Christmas market where shoppers will find greenery, gifts, and food. November 30 and December 1 are the dates for this market—lovely in a different way from what you might find in Taylor’s sister town of Oxford. It’s more than worth the seven-minute drive.

The South Lamar B&B is a worthy choice for travelers accustomed to staying in houses or bed and breakfasts. This post-Victorian structure dovetails perfectly with a clean, gently gilded modern design. Any visitor will feel they’ve experienced the loveliest parts of old and new Oxford at the very same moment.

The Graduate Hotel , with its bubble gum pink hardwood floors, retro photos, and vintage bicycles, represents a style like no other. Its rooftop restaurant overlooking The Square is the town's best spot for sunset views.

Recently renovated, The Oliver Hotel is also a warm choice just blocks from The Square that marries nostalgia with hospitality.

Top Christmas Activities on the Gulf Coast

Sparkling light displays and lavishly decorated cities are a highlight of the season. Here are the top activities to experience the Christmas spirit:

green and red illuminated christmas trees

Travel Tip! Before visiting, be sure to watch the movie “Christmas in Mississippi” on  Amazon Prime Video . Usually, it is only $1.99 to rent; it’s the perfect holiday feature to get into the Christmas Spirit and is all about preparing for the Gulfport Harbor Lights Winter Festival. A super cute one to add to your holiday watch list.

Best Things to Do: Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas

One of the most special things about celebrating a Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas is experiencing the holiday light displays throughout the small coastal communities.

1. Gulfport Harbor Lights Winter Festival

The Gulfport Harbor Lights Winter Festival is a favorite community holiday activity in Mississippi. It feels like a classic Christmas movie set.

It’s a holiday tradition on the Gulf Coast. This event transforms Jones Park and the Gulfport Harbor into a magical winter wonderland with elaborate light displays, animated scenes, and thousands of twinkling lights.

You can take leisurely walks along the illuminated paths, enjoy live entertainment, visit Santa’s Village, and savor delicious holiday treats.

The lights are even synchronized with classic Christmas songs!  If that doesn’t get you into the holiday spirit, I don’t know what will.

Travel Tip! This is an outdoor activity, so check the weather before you make plans. Although the Gulf Coast is known for mild winter temperatures, it can get pretty damp here, making you feel colder.

Be sure to wear layers and mittens and pack your favorite  cozy Christmas blanket  so you can curl up on the bleacher seating with a cup of hot chocolate and watch the extravagant light show.

2. Christmas on the Bayou

The Christmas on the Bayou boat parade adds a distinctive coastal touch to the holiday season and is a tradition that is very special to this community.

Given the Gulf Coast’s proximity to the water, boat parades and lighted tours are pretty much a given when it comes to holiday traditions.

The boaters in the community really get into the spirit of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas season by going over the top with festive decorations and actively taking part in the illuminated parade.

What sets this event apart is the unique tradition where waterfront homes also compete for the title of ‘Parade Captain’s Best House on the Bayou’ and serve as judges for the parade as well.

The event is planned and organized through the dedicated efforts of local volunteers and contributions from the community, making it a true  embodiment of the southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas spirit.

Christmas on the Bayou is Gulfport’s only waterfront parade, providing a front-row experience to witness the beautifully adorned boats.

You can enjoy the boat parade from three Gulfport boat launches/parks and numerous waterfront restaurants.

3. Ice Skating

Looking for an indoor activity but still want to feel the Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas vibes?  Spend the afternoon ice skating at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum.

The Coliseum offers a well-maintained ice rink where you can experience the joys of ice skating no matter what age you are.

The ice skating sessions are affordable and family-friendly. This makes it an excellent choice for families and individuals looking for a fun and cost-effective holiday activity.

We actually made it a  couple’s date night  and had a blast holding hands while (somewhat) gliding along the ice. It brought out the kid in us, especially as we laughed and fell on the ice a few times. Oops!

Travel Tip! Arrive early. Tickets are sold (in person only) 1-hour in advance of the ice skating session times. There are limited ice skates for rent, so it’s best to snag your tickets early.

4. Christmas Production Shows

You’ll find plenty of  magic of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas holiday season at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino .

The Christmas production shows are a dazzling and festive spectacle that captivate guests of all ages and are a signature feature of the Beau Rivage’s holiday traditions.

These shows are family-friendly, making them an excellent choice for holiday outings with loved ones.

The Christmas production shows feature top-notch performers, stunning costumes, and elaborate stage designs that transport the audience into a magical world of holiday wonder.

BONUS:  Plan your Christmas card family photos to be taken at the Beau Rivage. Their elaborate Christmas decor is the perfect backdrop. Ranging from oversized ornaments to gigantic Nutcrackers to Santa & his reindeer flying overhead in the atrium. You’ll definitely score the perfect family photo.

Travel Tip! The Beau Rivage usually begins setting up their Christmas decor at the beginning of November, so it allows for plenty of time to gather the family for a Christmas card memory and get it in the mail before the holidays.

5. Gulf Coast Marathon

Ok, so not technically a Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas activity, but the Gulf Coast Marathon is a prestigious annual running event that takes place along the Gulf Coast.

It’s held at the beginning of December when temperatures are usually tolerable enough to run outdoors (and not suffocating in the summer heat).

It’s usually sunny around this time of year which makes it a perfect outdoor activity for spectators and participants.

Runners from across the country gather to participate in various race distances. This includes the full marathon, half marathon, and 5K run.

This marathon is unique in that the entire route is along Hwy 90 that overlooks the Gulf of Mexico .

6. Outdoor Activities

One of the unique aspects of a Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas is the mild and pleasant winter climate.

This allows for a wide range of outdoor activities, like visiting a National Park or Monument.

Grab your  National Park Passport Book  and head over to the  Davis Bayou Visitor Center  to collect your stamp. Spend time exploring the area’s bayou and trails.

Their visitor center features indoor exhibits and a full history of the entire Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Christmas may not be the traditional time for a beach outing. But, on a good day in the south, you can take a nice walk along the shore.

You can soak up some much-needed vitamin D. In addition, you can even have a beach picnic on Christmas Day (yes, sometimes it’s actually that warm).

Mississippi’s Best Christmas Light Displays

Judy Smith

Nothing gets you into the holiday spirit more than enjoying of the beauty of the season in carefully and lovingly crafted light displays. Mississippi is so very fortunate to be the home to so many of these wonderful light displays sponsored by cities or organizations or Christmas enthusiasts. A road trip to see many of these Christmas extravaganzas will bring treasured family memories.

Here is a collection of some of the most magical light displays throughout Mississippi.

  • Heralded as “the biggest light show in Mississippi” by Only in Your State, the Gulfport Harbor Light Winter Festival is a breathtaking experience that takes you right into the heart of the season. Whether you take a stroll through the displays that contain over 1,200,000 sparkling lights or take the heated train ride, you’ll be enchanted and leave with a renewed sense of wonder for the season.
  • Prancer Path in Downtown Laurel, sponsored by the United Way of the Pine Belt Region, leads you down the path and reindeer cul-de-sacs filled with unique and beautiful trees artfully crafted by local businesses in the Pine Belt. And you’ll be serenaded by some of great Christmas music.
  • Cindy Wilson Moore is already lighting up the skies at her home at 459 Matthews Road in Laurel. Beautiful lights twinkle in coordination with Christmas classics for a wonderful display. Pleasant Home Baptist Church across the street from her home has parking and Moore invites guests to “bring chairs and blankets” to sit in the grassy area to enjoy the whole show which lasts for about thirty minutes. You’ll be immersed into the holiday spirit as you enjoy the music and orchestrated light display which started almost 20 years ago with just a string or two of lights around the home.
  • “Our mission is to bring a little joy into the lives of the kids and older guests that might not get a chance to see the larger displays in other places,” Moore said. “It is a blessing to us to bring some to the season to so many. I could tell you so many stories that guests have told me of how they brought sick family members or grieving families to see the lights and it just brings tears of joy to us that hopefully we can let them forget about any of their pains or problems in their lives for a while.” It is those many heart-wrenching stories that inspires “the Good Lord to help me get out there and put these lights up every year.”
  • Take a trip to Chunky, Mississippi, and enjoy an exciting tour through the Lazy Acres in Lights. They are “bringing Christmas magic to Mississippi with our wagon rides through the lights, visits with Santa, delicious hot chocolate, Christmas trees, holiday photo ops, and SO much more!” Bring the family to the farm and delight in the beautiful lights surrounding this lovely farm.
  • Enjoy “Mississippi’s original City of Lights” in Canton as they have already kicked off the holiday season on the Historic Canton Square. As if you’ve stepped into a Hallmark Christmas movie, the charming town is bedazzled with lights all around the square and the many beautiful displays. The festival began in 1989 and has continued to grow in attractions and fun for everyone. Take your pic by the 40-foot twinkling tree that stands beside the courthouse and enjoy the carnival rides. Each year, a new addition is added to the display to keep families coming to enjoy the Christmas spirit.
  • Featured in “The Great Christmas Light Fight 2018” on ABC, the Richardson Light in Madison, is a gorgeous, family residential drive-by display that overwhelms with the beauty of over 100,000 lights, over 200 inflatables, and several hundred wireframes, and most importantly the message of the display. • One of the most popular Christmas events in the Southeast happens in Jackson, MS where the Singing Christmas Tree draws thousands to Belhaven University to hear an all-female choir on a tiered stage perform popular holiday hymns and carols.

• For Mississippians on the Gulf Coast there's nothing like shrimp and grits to celebrate Christmas Eve. For Cajun Mississipians, it's heaping servings of gumbo that kick off the night before Christmas. The following week, it's black-eyed peas that are served on New Year's Eve to bring good luck for the coming year.

• Mississipians don't buy trees in tree lots, where shelf life is short for Christmas trees grown in the state. Instead, each year most families make a day of visiting Mississippi choose-and-cut Christmas tree farms where the most popular species include the Virginia Pine, Leyland Cypress, and Eastern Redcedar.

Why Corinth, Mississippi is a great Christmas getaway

Why Corinth, Mississippi is a great Christmas getaway

Corinth looks magical at Christmastime.

This article is sponsored by Visit Corinth.

If you're thinking of going on a little getaway in the days leading up to Christmas, there's a charming town you need to know about, and it's Corinth, Mississippi.

Corinth is filled with festive cheer throughout the holiday season, making it the perfect place to plan a trip this month. Whether you enjoy strolling through gorgeous light displays, indulging in a bit of nostalgia, dining on amazing cuisine for every meal of the day or all of the above, the Mississippi city has you covered.

To spotlight some of the holiday fun waiting for you, we'll share all the places to see and things to do while visiting Corinth this winter. Plus, we've included some of the eateries you should fill up at along the way.

Here's a look at why Corinth should be your Christmas getaway.

Grab a biscuit at Abe's Grill

Corinth is filled with uniquely wonderful spots serving up delicious dishes you won't want to miss out on, and Abe's Grill certainly sits near the top of that list. For more than 40 years, Abe's Grill has been serving hungry diners burgers, sandwiches and more, but it's their breakfast — especially their freshly made biscuits — that have made them a beloved institution among visitors and locals alike in the Mississippi town.

Take a tour of the Corinth Coca-Cola Museum

A free tour of the Coca-Cola Museum in Corinth is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Established as a soda bottling factory more than a century ago, the museum features a large collection of more than 1,000 pieces of authentic Coca-Cola memorabilia, old-fashioned drink machines and more from the Soda Fountain Era. Plus, you can wrap up your visit to the museum with a sweet treat like a delicious Coke float.

Warm up at SoCo Grind

Every winter day should start off with a hot cup of joe, and Corinth's SoCo Grind is a good spot to get one. With a large menu of espresso drinks, gourmet coffees and more, the local shop is where you need to go to get your caffeine fix for the day. While they have plenty to choose from, we recommend their signature Winter Wonderland latte, which features a blend of white mocha and hazelnut flavors that somehow manages to taste like the holiday season feels.

Shop local and complete your holiday shopping

Corinth is filled with local shoppes and boutiques if you still need to mark a few names off your Christmas shopping list -- and maybe get a little something for yourself too while you're at it. Ginger’s Boutique has gorgeous clothing and accessories while its companion store, Gingersnaps, has the little ones covered too. Plus, there’s Sanctuary Antiques for those unique finds as well as Love and A Dog, which caters to furbabies. Then, there’s Hoochies Gifts , where you can get a one-of-a-kind gift for just about everyone.

Fill up at Blazing Noodlez

On a cold winter day, nothing warms you up quite like a hot meal. Blazing Noodlez, a popular Thai restaurant in downtown Corinth, has plenty of those to offer. The eatery uses fresh ingredients to create its wide menu of noodle and rice dishes, stir-fries, curries and other made-from-scratch fare for lunch or dinner. Whether you're a fan of the classics or prefer to be adventurous, you're sure to leave full and happy.

Visit the Crossroads Museum

Corinth was once referred to as the "Crossroads of the South" because of the intersection of two railroads at its city center. Now, it's home to a museum dedicated to the town and its role in railway history. The Crossroads Museum and historic Corinth Depot allows visitors to view thousands of artifacts as well as view the famous original railroad crossing safely and stroll along its tracks. For train enthusiasts, there's no better way to spend an afternoon.

Catch a show at Corinth's theaters

Who doesn't love a little live entertainment? Several holiday performances will take the stage in Corinth this month. If you're feeling festive and in the mood for a laugh, The Corinth Theatre-Arts is putting on performances of "A Christmas Story" through Dec. 11. In addition, the historic Coliseum Theatre will host The Corinth Ballet's production of The Nutcracker through Dec. 10 as well as the 16th annual "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" community concert on Dec. 15.

Take a stroll through the downtown Christmas lights

There's something about Christmas lights that make the holiday season so magical, and downtown Corinth has no shortage of them. Throughout December, the city's historic district is fully decked out with a festive display of dazzling lights and decorative greens that'll make you feel like you've just walked onto the charming small-town set of a Hallmark movie.

Eat a slugburger at Borroum's

It wouldn't be a trip to this part of the region without a slugburger on the menu. That's why when the hunger pangs hits, stop in at Borroum’s — the state's oldest drug store and soda fountain. In addition to its iconic slug burgers, which consists of a fried patty made with meat and potato flakes, Borroum's offers all kinds of sandwiches, salads, desserts and more in a nostalgic setting that's all done up for the holiday season.

Stay at a charming bed and breakfast

If you want to feel like a local during your stay in Corinth, reserving a room at the quaint General’s Quarters Inn is a must. The historic six-room home is close to everything downtown Corinth has to offer and features fireplaces, wireless internet and many other amenities that'll make you feel cozy and comfortable this winter. Plus, all overnight guests get to start their day with a homemade breakfast.

In defense of Southern 'salads' because who needs lettuce anyway?

Potato salad

We Southerners get a lot of grief for a lot of things when it comes to our common kitchen practices, and one of those things is our affection for throwing the word "salad" into the name of dishes that aren't really salads (to them) but are really delicious (to everyone).

I should start off by saying as someone who has lived my entire life in the South, it's something I hadn't honestly given a-whole-lot of thought until I started working at It's a Southern Thing and realized that calling things that seem to involve every ingredient under the sun except lettuce a "salad" is, well, a Southern thing to do.

This is where I get stuck, though. Who said lettuce is a necessary ingredient when it comes to making a salad in the first place? After all, the official definition of a salad, according to Oxford Languages, is "a cold dish of various mixtures of raw or cooked vegetables, usually seasoned with oil, vinegar, or other dressing and sometimes accompanied by meat, fish, or other ingredients,"

Potato salad, strawberry-pretzel salad, pasta salad, tomato-cracker salad, egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, pear salad, Coke salad, ambrosia salad and many other iconic Southern salads easily fit that description, so the conclusion I've drawn is that Southerners actually just have a better grasp on what a salad can be.

Read more: Coke salad is the Southern 'salad' your potluck might be missing

(Hey, y'all: The subject of this story was selected by our Potluck members. If you join the Potluck membership program, you'll get special behind-the-scenes looks and a chance to influence the content we make. Find out more .)

So, are all those salad cynics just jealous because Southerners don't have to settle for sad salads consisting of a handful of lettuce and raw vegetables coated in ranch dressing? Because the South had the audacity to see the potential for salads to be treated as what they basically are -- casseroles you keep cold? That's definitely what it seems like.

Now the next argument that will likely be made is how salads are supposed to be healthy and the South's most popular salads typically aren't on account of usually involving a heavy helping of mayonnaise or cheese or sugar. And there's probably some truth to that -- with lettuce coming in at all of five calories per cup, there's not much out there that is as healthy as your standard garden salad. There's also not much on its level when it comes to lacking in flavor.

Read more: A ranking of the best Southern salads

See, we like to start our salads off using a healthy(ish) ingredient, and then add a kick of taste so that we, believe it or not, actually want to eat it. That's the goal, right? Because many folks spend the entire car ride to the potluck daydreaming about getting a scoop or two of Granny's famous potato salad, but we're pretty sure no one in the history of time has said "man, I have been thinking about this garden salad for days."

So yeah, we may coat the broccoli in our broccoli salad with bacon, cheese and a sweet, creamy dressing before we eat it, but we also enjoy eating it. That's the real difference between Southern salads and the salads you'll find elsewhere -- we're not eating them because we're trying to be healthy. We're eating them because we want to.

So, you know what, y'all can keep giving us grief about what dishes we call salads if it means we get an extra serving of Mama's macaroni salad. We imagine swallowing your pride is pretty hard to do when all you've got to wash it down is some boring lettuce and a couple grape tomatoes anyway.

In defense of Southern remedies, because Granny knows what she is doing

In defense of fall weddings, because no one should have to sweat their way down the aisle

In defense of Southern superstitions, because sometimes you got to make your own luck

In defense of possums, the cute critter you should want around

The ultimate Jimmy Buffett southern Mississippi getaway

The City of Pascagoula, Miss., welcomed its native son, Jimmy Buffett, on September 19, 2015, for the dedication of the Jimmy Buffett Bridge.

This story is presented by Coastal Mississippi.

Miss Jimmy Buffett? Us too. But we think the legendary singer-songwriter born in Pascagoula would want us to celebrate, not mourn. And what better place to celebrate than one of his favorite places, Coastal Mississippi.

Yep, Buffett lived in many places over his 76 years and traveled the world, but he was always quick to call the Magnolia State home. He traveled back to the area often and was seen in several of his favorite places on the Coast.

If you want to have a Buffett-inspired getaway in Coastal Mississippi (because we think Jimmy would always approve of a vacation), we have you covered:

Margaritaville Resort and Family Center 195 Beach Blvd., Biloxi

OK, let’s start with the obvious. Margaritaville Resort and Family Center is the perfect place to stay for all ages – it has everything you need. There’s a 55-foot arcade the family will love – we’re not talking about a mall arcade here, this is massive. There’s a ropes course, indoor roller coaster, climbing wall, VR simulator and, of course, arcade games. Outside, there’s a lazy river, two water slides, splash pads and, of course, a swim-up bar so you can enjoy a margarita on a lazy vacation day.

There are also plenty of food options. A Doe’s Eat Place (an iconic Mississippi restaurant), Margaritaville restaurant, pizza joint and several bars can be found on the resort grounds.

Scranton’s Restaurant & Catering 623 Delmas Ave., Pascagoula

Buffett was known to be a fan of Scranton’s, a funky bar/restaurant in Pascagoula, so much so that he name-checked it as one of his favorite beach bars in Garden and Gun magazine. “Scranton’s has been here as long as I can remember,” he told the magazine. “You can see the Pascagoula River there.” The restaurant is located in the town’s former firehouse/city hall, and it’s an eclectic spot. Try the shrimp and grits, she-crab soup and burgers.

Trapani’s Eatery 116 N. Beach Blvd., Bay St. Louis

Another spot Buffett name-checked in Garden and Gun ? Trapani’s Eatery. “I had a roommate from Bay St. Louis, and Tony’s (Trapani’s) place still reminds me of the time I spent in the area during my not-so-stellar collegiate career,” he said. The two-story restaurant/bar has live music, a fun patio and great bay views – it’s exactly the vibe we expect from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. And we can’t forget the food. The restaurant has excellent burgers and fresh seafood. We’re partial to anything with red gravy. (Pro tip: Make sure to try the calypso martini.)

Buffett Bridge 2001 Beach Blvd., Pascagoula

In 2015, Pascagoula dedicated a small bridge over Baptiste Bayou to the Mississippi legend. (And Buffett was in attendance and performed a show for the crowd, of course.) It’s a significant spot – not only did he love to go crabbing there when he was younger, but it’s the area where he received significant inspiration from his grandfather, a ship captain. As explained by then-mayor Harry Blevins at the ceremony, “(Buffett’s) grandfather … pulled out a map and asked Jimmy, ‘Where on this map are we?’ And Jimmy pointed, ‘Right here in Pascagoula!’ His grandfather said, ‘Well, let me show you a bit more, and he showed him this little blue stream which was Baptiste Bayou, where we named the bridge after Jimmy, and he said to him, ‘You follow this to the Gulf and beyond and you can do anything you want to do in life.’”

After he died, people left margaritas, sandals and more trinkets in his memory on the bridge .

Buffett’s childhood home

If you’re interested in Buffett’s very beginnings, you can view the exterior of his childhood home. We recommend seeing it by bike via the Historic Pascagoula Bike Trail . There are more than a dozen points of interest across the trail. Not only will you see the cozy home he spent some of his childhood in, but you’ll also see other cultural hotspots, like the site where author William Faulkner wrote “Mosquitoes” and the Round Island Lighthouse.

Miss Peetsy B.

Want to explore some of South Mississippi’s environmental treasures? Buffett and his sisters, Lucy Buffett and Laurie Buffett-McGuane, donated a 34-foot vessel to the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. The vessel is named Miss Peetsy B. after their mother who was a huge proponent of education. The 34-foot fiberglass vessel seats 32 passengers and is available for charters. Here’s where you can find more information.

  • 7 Serene Towns In Mississippi For A Weekend Retreat

Mississippi' s varied geography provides unique natural attractions that are perfect for an outdoor weekend retreat. Attractions like casinos, fine dining, and vintage homes also exist. While there are plenty of options for a two-day retreat, these six towns all have something different to offer, making them perfect for a quick getaway. The Delta Blues were born in this state, and much of American history is soaked into the small towns that make them memorable. Whether you are looking for a coastal retreat, a blues-filled weekend, or something in between, these serene towns have it all.

Natchez mississippi

Natchez has been popularized in pop culture by several John Grisham legal thrillers, a Mississippi native. The town is on the Mississippi River and is renowned for its antebellum mansions. One such mansion is the unfinished, octagonal-shaped, Greek Revival Melrose estate in the Natchez National Historical Park.

The Natchez Trace Parkway, spanning 10,000 years of history, is a 430-mile trail that winds up to Nashville, Tennessee. Natchez's cultural history and southern hospitality define it. The Rosalie Mansion and Gardens and Longwood are the only two historic homes here. Book a stay at the historic Choctaw Hall bed and breakfast on Wall Street to complete your weekend.

Ocean Springs

The Chester M. McPhearson Pier in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Ocean Springs is an aptly named cottage town on the banks of the Gulf of Mexico . Known as the "city of discovery," this coastal town is a collage of small-town charm and cultural flair. Museums like the Walter Anderson Museum of Art and the Mary C O'Keefe Cultural Center of Arts and Education showcase cultural significance. Over 200 shops and eateries blended with walkable white sand beaches make for a perfect weekend retreat.

There are three distinct eating districts where patrons can leave the establishments with go-cups. Natural attractions include the first French settlement, Fort Maruepas State Park, and the Davis Bayou Area, a part of the National Seashore. Ocean Springs has enough natural attractions and sites to fill a weekend itinerary.

Port Gibson

Windsor Ruins near Port Gibson, Mississippi.

Port Gibson is a serene town that played a big role in the American Civil War . The town is near the Grand Gulf Military Park, where the Union beat the Confederates, resulting in the fall of Vicksburg. The third oldest town in Mississippi, many Civil War buildings still exist because General Grant considered Port Gibson "too pretty to burn."

The town is as attractive today, with the added benefit of having many historic buildings to explore. A popular site to visit is the Windsor Ruins, a mansion built in 1850 and ten miles south of Port Gibson. It was left abandoned after the original order died within a few weeks of living there. The mansion burned down in 1890 due to an errant cigar. Port Gibson has beautiful, historical bed and breakfast inns like the Isabella for a charming, relaxing weekend getaway.

Historical buildings in Clarksdale, Mississippi

The small town of Clarksdale is notable as being the home of the Delta Blues. As the birthplace to such legends as Sam Cooke and Muddy Waters, Clarksdale celebrates the music 365 days a year. There is also the Delta Blues Museum, where visitors can immerse themselves in the rich history of this unique form of American music.

There is also a historical downtown area to explore, such as the Hooker Grocer and Eatery, which, of course, hosts live Blues acts, and the Bluesberry Cafe. The town is also the home to the intersection of Highway 61 and 49, the famous Crossroads Robert Johnson sang about. This town is a Mecca for music lovers, and it is easy to get lost in the Blues vibes over a weekend stay.

Bay St. Louis

Archway for Bay of St. Louis Mississippi, a coastal beach town.

Bay St. Louis is a serene coastal town on the Gulf Coast. Along with its history, Bay St. Louis is a popular attraction for gamblers at the Hollywood Casino and Resort and the Silver Slipper. Two historic sites include the Historic L&N Train Depot and the Bay St. Louis Little Theatre, a live performance theatre. The town is also a popular antiquing destination with the Antique Maisson LLC downtown. This mall hosts many different antique dealers offering various antiques and artifacts. There is much to do in Bay St. Louis, like haunted tours of a historic cemetery, strolling through the quaint downtown, or relaxing on the white sand beach.

Renaissance at Colony Park at Ridgeland, Mississippi.

Ridgeland is a historic town near the capital, founded in 1896 by real estate developers. There is much to do, whether outdoors, like Friendship Park and Old Trace Park, or The Township at Colony Park, which offers bountiful shopping opportunities. There is also an amusement center, Enter/Locked Rooms, which offers five unique immersive experiences for guests.

The town is also home to the Antique Mall of the South, a popular destination for residents and visitors. The Renaissance at Colony Park is another popular shopping area, with cobblestone streets surrounding many shops and restaurants. Whether you are looking for a shopping retreat or a quiet weekend with nature, Ridgeland has it all.

Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Hattiesburg is a big town with amenities like the Hattiesburg Zoo and the Saenger Theatre. There are also many museums, such as the African American Military History Museum and the Pocket Museum. The African American Military History Museum started as a USO club in 1942, while the Pocket is the smallest art gallery in Mississippi, designed. Hence, the art gets full attention and provides a better viewing experience.

There is a nice mix of adventurous sports, quiet dining, and museums. The Alley Cats Axe Throwing Company promises an adventurous weekend, and there are biking trails like Longleaf Trace for those seeking an outdoor retreat. Hattiesburg also has numerous lodging options and top pubs and restaurants, such as Colludium Brewing Company, to wind down at the end of the day.

Mississippi has a long and storied history and beautiful scenery. Bay St. Louis is ideal for a quiet beach weekend, while Clarksdale is the place for music lovers. Bigger towns like Hattiesburg offer excellent outdoor opportunities with great dining and shopping options. Natchez offers a glimpse into the past with its Antebellum mansions and centuries-old oak trees with hanging Spanish moss. Small towns like Port Gibson have military significance, and most buildings have survived, providing a fascinating look into the past. Between the varying topography, historical importance, and quirky attractions, Mississippi's serene towns are perfect for a weekend retreat.

6 Unique Places to Visit in Mississippi

K nown as the “Birthplace of the Blues,” Mississippi is a state full of unique places to visit, including gorgeous Gulf Coast beaches and cities with small-town charm . A road trip from Memphis , Tennessee, through the Mississippi Delta, with stops in Jackson and Clarksdale, provides visitors the chance to learn about the region’s contributions to American music, explore its intense Civil Rights history and, of course, eat pie, because what’s a trip south without pie?

1. Delta Blues Museum

The Mississippi Delta is the birthplace of the Blues, an American art form. And the funky, friendly town of Clarksdale is the home of the Delta Blues Museum . I especially loved hearing snippets of music from Mississippi artists like Muddy Waters, Ike Turner, and Sam Cooke.

But we also enjoyed learning about Blues greats we didn’t know. And seeing guitars, performing outfits, video clips, interviews, performance outfits. The museum even has the log cabin Muddy Waters lived in on a Mississippi plantation. Also, the museum has live performances and other events. So check its calendar.

2. Food in Clarksdale

We visited Clarksdale for the Delta Blues Museum. But we could have visited for the food – and desserts – at Yazoo Pass Restaurant . Yum. My husband and I gobbled up the Kentucky Derby Pie and the Key Lime Pie. And we were glad we stopped at Meraki Coffee & Roastery for their lemon pound cake before the next leg of our Mississippi road trip.

If you’re a Southern food fan like I am, check out the  great eats in Memphis, Tennessee , and at B & B’s in Wilmington, North Carolina.

3. Civil Rights Museum

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson is brilliant. This must-see museum is worth a trip to Mississippi. The Museum centers on stories of civil rights activists in Mississippi, from WWII to the 1970’s. First, it gives a historical context. Like the names of people lynched, and the supposed “reasons.” Then, the Museum weaves stories using video, audio of interviews and singing, a life-sized jail cell, photos, and artifacts.

Inspiring ordinary people at the Civil Rights Museum

Rather than famous leaders, the Museum focuses on the bravery of ordinary people. Like the individual organizers of protests, sit-ins, voter registration, and economic boycotts. And on the consequences they faced, like jail, threats, and violence. Activists like Fannie Lou Hamer fired and evicted for registering to vote. But who went on to found a new political party.

No sugarcoating, but warnings.

The Museum doesn’t shrink from our country’s brutal history. And its artistic installations can be emotionally difficult. For example, in a tiny alcove, I saw a video of flames. Then, I was shocked when an image of a real Mississippi lynching appeared on the alcove wall. And text explaining who the mob had murdered. Suddenly, I realized the flame symbolized how mobs burned people alive. And I was alone in the flames. While deeply moving, I appreciated that the Museum has warnings to let visitors opt out of graphic images. Like the mutilated face of lynching victim Emmett Till.

I liked that the last exhibit at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum focuses on the future. The Museum shows visitors’ faces and their responses to questions, like suggestions for how to talk about race. And I left the Museum feeling inspired and energized. Also, while we did not take a guided tour of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, another SheBuysTravel contributor did.

SheBuysTravel Tip : The Civil Rights Museum is emotionally intense. We needed a break after 2 hours. So we crossed the street for a delicious lunch on the sunny patio of Old Capitol Inn. After lunch, we went back to the museum.

4. Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home

At the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson, we learned about Medgar Evers, the brave Mississippi NAACP field organizer. Evers organized boycotts, registered voters, and investigated Klan violence. He went undercover as a sharecropper to identify witnesses to Emmett Till’s murder.

At the Civil Rights Museum, video of Evers’ powerful speeches helped me understand why Evers threatened Mississippi white supremacists. And why they assassinated him in 1963.

So we wanted to learn more at the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home in Jackson, now a museum, maintained by the National Parks Service as a National Monument. Evers was assassinated in the driveway of the house, where he lived with his family. Unfortunately, the museum was closed on the day we visited. However, on our Mississippi road trip, we stopped at the house, and read the historical marker. And appreciated the opportunity to pay our respects.

Call 601-345-7211 to reserve a tour, Tuesday-Saturday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

5. Smith Robertson Museum

This Museum and Cultural Center in Jackson is in the formerly segregated school of novelist Richard Wright. We thoroughly enjoyed its interactive exhibit called Who Was Medgar Evers , about the Mississippi civil rights activist.

While the exhibit was aimed at kids, it is thoughtful and realistic. For example, the exhibit shows soap and a jar of beans to illustrate the impossible questions Mississippi used to prevent Blacks from voting, like “How many bubbles are in a bar of soap?”

And without being gruesome, Who Was Medgar Evers  did not sugarcoat history. It tells the story of the lynching of an Evers family friend, and the friend’s bloody shirt left in a public place as a warning. And illustrates the story with a red-stained shirt.

Also, we appreciated the Smith Robertson Museum overview of the history of slavery, including a reproduction of a slave ship that I found too scary to enter. And its exhibits about Reconstruction and the migration of Southern Black people to Northern states, Field to Factory: The Afro-American Migration, 1915-1940 .

SheBuysTravel Tip : This gem of a museum only costs $7 and was a memorable part of our Mississippi road trip. But call first to confirm it is open. And ring the bell if the door is locked.

6. Sumner Courthouse

In 1955, two white men murdered Emmett Till, a Black Chicago teenager who was visiting Mississippi relatives. A jury acquitted the murderers. But both later confessed.

Visiting the Emmett Till Interpretive Center in Sumner was a highlight of our Mississippi road trip. It’s not a museum. Rather, at the site, a trained guide facilitated a thoughtful and emotional conversation among the 5 visitors about race and history. Then the guide brought us into the actual Mississippi courtroom where the trial took place. Even though there is no violent imagery, this emotionally powerful experience may be better for kids over 11. Also, it requires advance reservations for groups larger than 10.
