Norway Fjord Trekking

I LOVED this tour!! It was pricey but that's just what Norway costs. We did four hikes in total throughout the trip and they all had different challenges and amazing scenery, and they were well spaced with a rest day before the final Trolltunga hike. I'd say anyone in reasonable shape should be fine for this tour - there were some spots with steep rocks and we had to use a rope to help pull ourselves up, but you definitely don't need any advanced hiking or climbing skills. Our guide, Karl, was really friendly and knowledgeable, giving us lots of fun facts about Norway and the regions we were in. 100% would recommend this tour!

Walking the Fjords

I wasn't sure this was the right trip for me because I am an inactive person and it was listed as a moderate level tour. However, I found out I was able to hike 620 meters in a day, walk over 8 miles, and for over 7 hours. I met the guide at the airport and everything was taken care of until the last day of the tour. I did not join the group transfer on the return trip home as my flight was not until the next day. I was able to take the "FlyBus" two blocks away from the hotel back to the airport at 4:45 a.m. without issue. Ten other hikers joined me on this tour and they were all strangers to me. Nine were women and One man. Ages ranged from 35-71 on our tour. I could not have been more pleased with my fellow travelers and I enjoyed spending my time with each one of them. Eight were from the UK, Two from USA, and One from Canada. This was my first hiking trip with no previous hiking experience. All of the other travelers were experienced and I received help and tips from the others from how to wear my back pack to how to use the hiking poles. One mistake I could not overcome was not having the right sized hiking boots and I paid the price for that. My toes were bruised, I had blisters, and my ankles and feet were swollen the entire time, but I pressed on regardless. The weather in this part of Norway has a lot of rain in June, but luckily we enjoyed practically the entire week without much rain to interfere. Therefore we were able to successfully proceed with the entire itinerary only to switch a couple days around due to rain and hiking conditions on the trail. The itinerary was well planned from travel days and completely filling our hiking days. Usually we had breakfast at 7:45, left our base camp by 8:45 and returned around 5 pm each day. Dinner was at 7 pm. Each hike had different types of hiking trails, difficulty, and scenery to take in. None of it was disappointing. We traveled by mini bus each day, which was comfortable and our guide drove us very safely around the region. Thon Hotel Orion was a comfortable tourist hotel with an excellent breakfast buffet. It was located along the water in the heart of Bergen. I cannot say enough good things about Nes Gard Guesthouse along Lustrafjord. The scenery is breathtaking. The rooms are cozy and the beds are comfortable. There are no televisions, but apparently the do have wi-fi access. The owner of the guesthouse and staff are personable and sincerely want you to have a pleasant stay. I am a vegetarian and I had thoughtful meals. Others had food allergies or preferences and everyone was accommodated with personal attention. The breakfast buffet and packed lunches were standard. I only had a cheese sandwich, soft-boiled egg and banana/apple for my packed lunches every day. The dinners were fantastic 3 course meals. My compliments to the chef as I thoroughly enjoyed the menu, quality of food, and taste every day. Our tour guide was a modest, down to earth gentleman. He was quiet by nature, but is experienced, attentive, and a genuine human being. All of the travelers seemed to really appreciate his personality, expertise, and his good nature. He offered assistance on the trail if you needed it, did not want to put anyone at risk of getting hurt, carried coffee and tea every hiking day for lunch, drove safely and thoughtfully, and seemed very proud of his country. He seemed to enjoy being on the trails and was very comfortable showing us around. He is a really great person and I was very appreciative of him. Overall, I had a very successful tour and it exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this tour, would do it again, and found new friends. I also found a new love of hiking.

Jotunheimen\'s Peaks & Lakes (Self-guided Walking Tour) Tour

Jotunheimen's Peaks & Lakes (Self-guided Walking Tour)

After visiting a few times the most popular hiking regions in Europe we decided to explore further north and our natural choice fell to Norway. The area of this walking tour is within easy reach of Oslo. It was a bit pricey but nothing in Norway is cheap. Actually many of the other treks we considered were even more expensive and we were glad that we found this one. The tour was excellent and all land arrangements went smooth. We were lucky to have clear skies throughout our stay. We are considering visiting Sweden now.

8 great hiking tours in Norway

With 41 national parks, dramatic mountain scenery and miles of forest paths and walking tracks, Norway is one of the world’s best countries to go hiking. It has trails and tours to suit all levels of fitness, from multi-day mountain treks to gentle strolls around spectacular viewpoints.

Even if you’re not a hardened hiker and the most walking you usually do is to the train station and back, don’t worry – we’ve got a hike for you. Grab your hiking boots, and head off on one of these tours!

Brave the Kjerag boulder

Around 100km east of Stavanger

Brave the Kjerag Boulder, Norway, on this guided hiking tour

This is a challenging full-day hike that demands a reasonable level of fitness. But your reward is the ultimate Instagram pic: you on top of the Kjerag boulder.

The trip starts in Stavanger, where you’ll be picked up and driven through mountainous landscapes to the trailhead at Eagle’s Nest. From here, it’s a steep two-and-a-half hour hike up the mountain with spectacular views en route back over the Lysefjord.

Once at the top, those who are brave enough can step out onto the Kjerag boulder, which is wedged between two cliffs about 1000 metres (!) above the fjord. After lunch, it’s a two-hour hike back down to the trailhead, where the minibus picks you up and takes down to Lysebotn for a cruise on the fjord and more spectacular views.

Climb the world’s longest staircase

Around 60km east of Stavanger

The Flørli staircase has 4444 steps, making it a very challenging hike

You may not expect to climb a mountain using a staircase, but the Flørli wooden steps lead up from the Lysefjord to the Ternevass Dam, some 750 metres above sea level. The 4,444 wooden steps were built to service a former hydro-electric plant and run alongside old water pipes.

But this is not a trek for the faint-hearted – the steps are very steep in sections and the views back across the fjord and of the neighbouring mountains can be vertigo-inducing.

Once at the top, a wooded path leads to the ruins of the old Flørli village, then you can follow a slightly easier trail back down to the fjord.

Take the overnight hike to Trolltunga

Around 95km north of Kristiansand

The dramatic Trolltunga outcrop of rock is a great place to go hiking in Norway

This two-day hike to the Trolltunga (the ‘troll’s tongue’) is a real wilderness experience. It involves a 28km hike, camping wild up by the rocky outcrop – and even a swim in an icy pond, if you’re up to it.

The hike up to Trolltunga, some 700 metres above Ringedal Lake, provides great views of the Folgefonna Glacier on the way up. Once at the top, you can settle into a plate of warming reindeer stew, cooked over a campfire and admire the sunset from this dramatic vantage point.

Take on the Jotunheim long-distance trail

Around 220km north of Oslo

The Jotunheim Mountains, Norway

Serious hikers and mountain-buffs will love this week-long hike along the most spectacular section of the long-distance Jotunheim Trail, which runs from Oslo to Gjendesheim. It’s the final leg of the trail, which starts from Liomseter, and ends down by the scenic Lake Gjende.

The tour is organised by the Norwegian Trekking Association, and all accommodation is in their network of self-service hiking huts (more on those in our guide to camping in Norway ).

The distances covered range from 11km to 17km a day, with the final day’s trek either following a dramatic trail over the ridge between Sikkilsdalshornet and Sikkidalshø summits, or taking a path along the lake Sikkilsdalsvatnet, depending on the weather conditions.

Go hiking with huskies

hiking tours of norway

If you’re looking for a more gentle walk, or have kids in tow, this husky hike hits the spot. Starting from Tromsø, you’ll be taken out to the camp, where some 300 dogs live.

Here, you’ll meet your furry walking friends, who will lead you out into the countryside, with views of mountains and fjords en route. You may even get to cuddle a puppy.

As the sun sets, your guide will light a campfire, so you can cosy up with your canine companions and look out for the northern lights to appear in the night skies above.

Hike onto one of Norway’s glaciers

Around 85km southeast of Ålesund

Hiking on a glacier, Norway

Fancy a real adventure? Grab your crampons and ice axe and head out onto a glacier! This hike on the Tystig glacier has a real wow factor – you’ll be kitted out with ropes, harnesses, and snowshoes as you venture onto the icy mountainous landscapes.

The excitement starts with a cable car trip up the mountain – the views from here are spectacular, over valleys, lakes and mainland Europe’s largest glacier, Jostedalsbreen (you can find out more in our guide to Norway’s best glaciers ).

Once at the top, it’s a 45-minute hike to the glacier, where your knowledgeable guide will provide you with all the kit you need to venture out onto the glacier. During the two-three-hour glacier walk you’ll stop for a lunch – it’s a surreal experience eating your sandwiches with blue ice or snow underfoot.

Try hiking with the family

Around 250km south of Trondheim

Hiking in the Rondane National Park, Norway

It may not be the most obvious type of holiday for children, but there are some great beginner-level day hikes in the Rondane National Park that are suitable for all ages – including relatively fit grandparents.

This four-day hiking trip through beautiful mountain landscapes in Norway’s oldest national park, follows trails of 6–12km a day, overnighting at mountain lodges, where a three-course dinner is served. And you don’t even have to carry your own luggage – it will be transported to the next lodge for you.

Hike to the Pulpit Rock

The dramatic Pulpit Rock, Norway

The route up to Preikestolen, more often known as Pulpit Rock, is one of Norway’s most spectacular hikes. It’s a four-to-six-hour trek along well-marked paths, though sections of it can be a bit steep and rocky. But the views from the top over the blue Lysefjord and surrounding mountains reward all the effort of getting here.

Our Mountains to Fjords Hut to Hut Trek is an incredible way to explore Norway’s best landscapes and most famous National Park, Jotunheimen. This Park boasts the highest mountains not only in Norway, but all of Northern Europe; the name Jotunheimen literally means “home of the giants.”

Utilizing Norway’s fantastic hut system, we intimately enjoy the Park and all of its spectacular, yet challenging, trails and jaw dropping vistas. After soaking up panoramic mountain views for days, we take you on a visit to one of Norway’s other famous natural features, the Nærøyfjord. This spot is so amazing and unique it is featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and we are proud to enjoy it via a sustainable, zero emissions cruise.

Also, this trip starts in the capital city of Oslo and ends in the charming town of Bergen, so we have the opportunity to see a large swath of Norway and learn about its many traditions and rich cultural history in one spectacular hiking-centered itinerary. Come explore the land of the Vikings with us on foot!

Learn About Our Private Trips

  • Driving Time: 4-5 hours

This  Norway trek begins with rendezvous at the Thon Opera Hotel in Oslo for an orientation meeting with your guides and group. We’ll walk to the bus station to catch a comfortable coach to our lodging in Jotunheimen National Park. The drive takes 4-5 hours and includes a bathroom/snack break near the half-way point. The bus has deluxe seating and Wi-Fi available during the trip. Once we arrive at our destination, we’ll settle into our accommodations and enjoy a short walk to stretch our legs before sitting down for a 3-course dinner. Our mountain hut for this evening (and most other nights) is basic, but cozy and warm with bunkbeds and shared bathrooms.  Tomorrow our Jotunheimen hiking adventure begins!

  • Hiking Mileage: 8.4 miles (13.5 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 3346 feet (1020 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 3346 feet (1020 m)

After enjoying breakfast and preparing lunch Matpakke style, the Norwegian traditional way of making lunch, we’ll pack our bags and ferry them down to the dock to be transferred to our next night’s lodging via boat. Our hike today is possibly the most famous route in Norway and a rite of passage for any Norwegian hiking enthusiast. Besseggen Ridge is a challenging yet rewarding hike that allows for amazing views of towering coastal mountains and sprawling lakes. Bessvatnet and Gjende Lakes make up the majority of the day’s scenery with their spectacular contrasting colors. This trail requires a bit of scrambling as we make our way down the steep, rocky sections. We’ll also have the use of chains for more stability. Once we arrive at tonight’s hut, we’ll rendezvous with our baggage at the dock and transport it up to our rooms. Tonight’s dinner is well-deserved after our fantastic day trekking across Norway’s most famous ridge!

  • Hiking Mileage: 6.2 miles (10 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 2494 feet (760 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 2494 feet (760 m)

Our hike today is another fulfilling one and chocked full of more amazing scenery to reward our efforts. After dropping our luggage at the docks, our deeper exploration of Jotunheimen National Park continues by hiking up to the high mountain plateau above us. From the plateau the views are expansive with many small mountain lakes to enjoy, as well as possible wildlife sightings such as the vast herds of Reindeer that live in the National Park. We’ll stop for lunch at one of these lakes before descending off the plateau to our next night’s lodging again on the shores of Gjende Lake. The way down is steep and has chains to assist, but the comfort of Gjendebu hut, a hot shower, and another traditional Norwegian dinner will soothe our bodies after the day’s efforts and well-earned memories.

  • Hiking Mileage: 10 miles (16 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 1640 feet (500 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 1640 feet (500 m)

A breakfast buffet starts off our day before we carry our bags to the dock to be ferried yet again to our next hut. Today our bags travel a bit farther then we do and we may actually beat them to our next hut. (It is important to pack a few extra items in your pack if you desire fresh clothes immediately after arriving at tonight’s hut.) The hike is more relaxing today than our past two hikes, but the views remain absolutely outstanding. Our trail takes us up out of the Gjende Lake Valley and over a mountain pass. Once over the pass, we’ll start to see more lakes and rolling mountains as we descend down into another large lake valley. Bygdin Lake makes up the large body of water here and is a stunning backdrop for our last night’s lodging in the Park. Tonight, we stay in a legendary mountain hut full of tradition. The host of this hut is famous in Norway for her kindness, initiative, and voice. If we are lucky maybe we can hear a Norwegian mountain song before dinner!

  • Hiking Mileage: 8 miles (13 km)
  • Drive Time: 1.5 hours

Today is our final day of hiking in Jotunheimen National Park. This time we climb up between two of Norway’s most famous mountains, Uranostind and Falketind. As we pass under these giants, we’ll hike by many alpine lakes. One of the larger scenic lakes will be our goal for a picnic lunch before descending down to our awaiting vehicle and driver. As stunning as the views from our hike are today, the views from our drive are equally amazing. Our accommodations for the next 2 nights are in the small town of Aurland. Dinner tonight will be right on the water’s edge overlooking the fjord, a truly unique Norwegian experience. We deserve it!

  • Hiking Mileage: 3.7 miles (6 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 1896 feet (578 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 1896 feet (578 m)
  • Driving Time: 1 hour

After a full breakfast we’ll shuttle to today’s trailhead. En route we will stop by one of Norway’s National Heritage sites, Borgund Stave Church. This fabulously unique building is 800+ years old, and is a wonderful place to stop, stretch our legs and appreciate the history of Norway. Our drive continues to take us out of the mountains to the fjords. And what an amazing transition it is! Fjords are long, narrow strips of ocean tucked between towering cliffs. Often these natural features are created by the geologic submergence of glaciated valleys. Our hike today is up to the summit of Prest Mountain for stunning views down into the fjords and Aurland. We’ll enjoy another comfortable night and delicious dinner in this beautiful place by the fjord.

  • Boat Ride Time: 2.5 hours
  • Train Time: 3 hours
  • Drive Time: 15 minutes

Our last day of exploration takes us to one of Norway’s most famous fjords, Nærøyfjord. Here we’ll enjoy a 2.5 hour ecologically friendly boat cruise down the narrow sea inlets of this breathtaking channel. High towering cliffs will frame every magical shot along the way. After our dazzling boat ride we’ll head to Flåm for a relaxing lunch before continuing on by train to Myrdal. In Myrdal we will catch our last leg of transportation of the day on a relaxing 2 hour train ride to our final lodging of the trip in the charming coastal town of Bergen. Tonight we have plenty to celebrate and will celebrate with a final farewell dinner out in Bergen’s popular neighborhood, Bryggen.

  • Shuttle to Airport: 20 minutes

Today we enjoy one last breakfast together. Afterward we’ll have a shuttle planned for those who need a ride to the airport for morning flights. What an exciting, fun, and challenging 8 days it’s been! Many guests choose to spend an extra day/night in Bergen to see more of the city and it’s beautiful surroundings before traveling on.

Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however occasionally trips are subject to itinerary changes based on a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to: lodging/campground availability, extreme weather, political or bureaucratic obstacles, earthquakes, fires, flooding and more. Normal  terms and conditions  apply to trips with itinerary changes.

Meals: What to Expect

Norwegian cuisine is very traditional and features a simple approach to breakfasts and lunches. Norwegians often eat Matpakke, which is a cold lunch made from breakfast supplies. Norwegians focus a lot of their diet on meat, fish, root vegetables and heavy sauces. For dinners, ingredients are very high quality and are traditional Norwegian dishes. Menus are often set, and there is not an option to order something else at most of our accommodations. The remote huts can often have very similar cuisine during the trek. The ability to choose your meal off a menu depends on the restaurant and can be organized beforehand, when possible.

We can often accommodate vegan, vegetarian and non-gluten diets and make adjustments for food allergies. These and other special dietary requests may require an additional fee, and in some countries may be more difficult to accommodate than others. Please inquire with us for more information about the specific trip you’re interested in.

We provide all group gear which includes the following:

Travel to Oslo / from Bergen

Booking flights.

For this Norway trek you will need to fly into Oslo, Norway and out of Bergen, Norway. We recommend guests travel into Oslo a day before their trip begins and spend a night in Oslo near the city center. We recommend the Thon Hotel Opera ( website ) for convenience. This hotel is a 1-minute walk from the central train station, where you can get off the airport train and into the city. It is central, right next to the Opera House, National Gallery and Peace Center. You will meet the group and guide(s) on the morning of Day 1 for an orientation meeting.

On the last day of the trip, guests are together for breakfast and will have a scheduled transfer to the Bergen Airport at 9am-10am. We will be leaving the hotel between 9am-10am. This is included in the price of the trip. Departing flights should be planned after 12pm to utilize our provided airport transportation this day. Any airport transportation needs outside of this will be at the guest’s expense.

Flights to Oslo Airport and from the Bergen airport are the guest’s responsibility. Multiple airlines operate flights into Norway from many U.S. and European international airports. Some of the primary U.S. departure cities include Atlanta, Denver, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Dallas and Minneapolis.

Safety Precautions

Your safety is our top priority. Our hiking tours are led by professional hiking guides, all of whom are wilderness-certified first responders or EMT’s, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience. Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.

In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the  Center for Disease Control website  for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

Essential Eligibility Criteria (“EEC”)  have been specifically identified to help you understand the skills and abilities necessary to participate on each Wildland trip, and they apply uniformly to all potential trip participants, irrespective of the presence or absence of any disability.

Once you identify a trip in which you may be interested, please carefully review the  EEC  and itinerary details. If after reviewing the EEC that apply to your desired trip, you determine you need an accommodation in order to meet the EEC, please  contact us  prior to registering to discuss your requested accommodation.

The EEC exist for your own safety and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are unable to meet the EEC for the trip, with or without an accommodation, you are not eligible for that trip. If you register and arrive for a trip for which you do not meet the EEC, you will be disqualified from participation on the trip and will be dismissed or evacuated from the trip without a refund.

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Check out our  Meet Our Team  page for staff bios.

Guide Working Parameters

Guides are required to take 8 hours off each 24-hour period to sleep, recuperate, take personal/down time…etc. In addition, as part of the 8 hours off they must sleep/rest or be in their tents/rooms  uninterrupted  for a minimum of 5 hours each night. We ask guests to respect these requirements and to not interrupt guides’ off time and sleep time unless there is a true emergency.

Age Restrictions

Age restrictions on this trip are as follows:

  • 12 and older to join scheduled tours (mixed groups)
  • 5 and older to join private tours, with final approval and specific logistical requirements (such as porter or stock assist) determined on a case by case basis

Trip Insurance

For your protection, we strongly recommend the purchase of field evacuation, repatriation, and medical trip insurance. International travel is expensive, and the modest cost of trip insurance is a sound investment in an uncertain world.

If you wish to purchase trip insurance, we recommend IMG/iTravelinsured. They are one of the world’s leading providers of travel insurance.

For information on recommended IMG/iTravelinsured policies please  click here .

For even greater information, or if you simply prefer communicating with a real, live person, feel free to contact our exclusive agent Michael Bennett. Michael will help you identify the best product for your needs, and there is no cost associated with his assistance. You may contact him at:

Email: [email protected] US by Phone: 877-305-9083 Direct/International by Phone: 702-448-3664

If you already have insurance or wish to purchase from anyone other than IMG/iTravelinsured, we recommend careful consultation with the provider to ensure appropriate coverage. This is because many providers have a number of policy exclusions.

Weather in Norway

Norway’s weather is generally cool and wet. Precipitation is common, but least common in July and August. However, in July and August, it still rains most days if just small amounts. In Bergen, on the west coast of Norway, rain is extremely common.

Over the last 5 years, summers have been getting increasingly warm, with highs in the 30s Celsius (high 80s, low 90s Fahrenheit). In Jotunheimen National Park, the average high temperature in July is 19 degrees Celsius (66°F), with a low of -5 (23°F). Another amazing, well-run trip by Wildland Trekking

This was an amazing trip with spectacular scenery and guides. We had a group of 12 and the guides did a great job ensuring that we all felt supported in our hiking pace and were able to complete each segment of the hike. The huts were fantastic and provided local culture along with good food. Spending the last part of our trip in Aurland and Flam was a nice way to reacclimate after our time at the huts without jumping into the big city life again. Mt Prest was a beautiful hike as well. This was another amazing, well-run trip by Wildland Trekking and the reason I keep coming back to hike with you. Thanks!

Norway hut to hut trek

Thank you Magda and Dean for providing us with a trip of a lifetime. They immersed us in the beauty, history and customs ….. really the full breadth of what this beautiful country has to offer. It was perfect.

I highly recommend!

What a fabulous trip we had. We had a rugged, exciting and fun trip to Norway with two experienced guides who told us history, information about the wildlife and plants and couldn't have been more fun and caring. I highly recommend!

Thundering waterfalls cascade down from snow-covered mountains, with fields of wildflowers coloring the landscape. Starting in Bergen with its famous UNESCO site of Bryggen , you will experience all of Sognefjorden from west to east, getting the bird’s eye view of its arms when reaching the peaks. Self guided hiking tour in the Fjords of Norway

Itinerary Norway Hiking Self Guided

Day 1 arrival to bergen.

Time to explore Bergen. The vibrant and historic city of Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and has a lot to offer. Most famous is Bryggen; the wooden buildings on Bergen’s iconic wharf are reflections of its history in the Hanseatic League. St. Mary’s Church is Bryggen’s tallest and oldest structure, dating to 1180. The Hanseatic museum provides wonderful insight into daily life of German merchants living and working here during the Hanseatic era. Just beside it, is one of Norway’s best-preserved fortresses; Bergenhus. The oldest structure on site, Håkon’s Hall, dates to 1250, and was a royal residence during the Middle Ages. Tonight, you will have a welcome orientation (by phone and an in-person meeting when you get to Balestrand.)

Meals: None Overnight: Bergen

Day 2 Hiking in Bergen to Mount Fløyen: 3-10 km / 2-6 mi

Today’s hike is a walk with beautiful views and is suitable for all ability levels! You will start with a ride on a lovely cable car (roundtrip tickets are included for the cable car.) Take the cable car up, or down, or some of the way. At the top, which is 1049 feet above the city, you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city! Stop for a break in the café, restaurant, or at the scenic viewpoint. Several nice walks start from the top, so it is quite easy to continue on. For example, on short walk takes you to the small lake “Blåmannsvatnet” (+ 5 km.) To finish your day, you can either take the cable car down to the city centre, or walk down. The path winds its way down from the mountain with many twists and turns, but it is easy to follow. Make sure you have plenty of time to admire the views and stop in the one of the parks! Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own.

Meals: breakfast Distance/Elevation: 3-10 km / 2-6 mi, 2-3 hours Highlights: Mount Fløyen and panoramic views Overnight: Bergen

Day 3 Bergen - Balestrand with Hike: 4 km / 2.5 mi

This morning take the coastal express boat into the Sognefjorden, whose glacier waters mirror snow-covered majestic mountains. Admire small villages along the fjord and cascading waterfalls as you make your way to Balestrand at mid day. As early as the 18th century, Balestrand was known as a popular tourist destination for the wealthy and also many artists from Norway and Europe. A number of artists built their summer residences in the dragon style, a popular architectural style from this period. Many of these houses are well preserved today, creating a unique architectural environment and also Scandinavia’s largest concentration of dragon style houses. Take a walk along King Bele’s Road, to enjoy these houses or take a longer hike, which also features artistic influences! Tonight, stay at the Kvikne’s Hotel (from 1877), with its imposing façade facing the fjord.

Meals: breakfast & dinner Distance/Elevation: 2 different options in the afternoon – ca 4 km / 2.5 mi Highlights: boat ride, exploring Balestrand, cider tasting option Overnight: Balestrand

Day 4 Hiking to Raudmelen: 8 km / 5 mi

After breakfast, today’s hiking starts from the hotel. Follow a relatively steep path up through the woods, until it opens up to a view over Balestrand and the Sognefjord. From here, follow the path upwards to a marvellous viewpoint over Sognefjord and Esefjella. On one side you will see the bright green slopes of Balestrand and on the other, dramatic rocky mountains towards Esedalen. Follow along the ridge towards the highest peak, Raudmelen, with its expansive views on both sides. Note: There are plenty of options to take shorter routes in case of bad weather or other.

Optional services, advance booking required: -Easier hike (ca 5 km) that can end with a cider tasting.

Meals: breakfast, packed lunch & dinner Distance/Elevation: 8 km / 5 mi, 100- 978 m, 6 hours Highlights: views from Raudmelen Overnight: Balestrand

Day 5 Hiking Årøy – Solvorn: 8 km / 5 mi

Transfer from Balestrand to Årøy. From the end of Barsnesfjorden you pass the mighty Årøy River and start the hike at the other side of the bridge. Follow the same road that King Holy Olav took in 1023 with his men. This is the path where they found fresh water from the source and since then, was named the “Olav Source.” The path goes up to Hafslo and continues along the lake until Galden, where you hike down to picturesque Solvorn. A small village with white wooden houses, Solvorn is busy in the summertime with its public beach, ferry to Urnes, and nice summer atmosphere. The town has a small café and a nice art gallery in one of the old boathouses. Overnight at the historic Walaker Hotel, which is over 370 years old. Passed on from generation to generation since 1690, the hotel is now an attraction in itself.

Optional services, advance booking required: -Transfer (or bus) – hike from Nyre from Solvorn, or to Legene. Both tours along the fjord, 4 to 8 km.

Meals: breakfast, packed lunch & dinner Distance/Elevation: 8 km / 5 mi, 240 m, easy walk Highlights: hiking by Årøy River, Hafslo Lake, cute town of Solvorn Overnight: Solvorn

Day 6 Hiking Molden: 10 km / 6 mi

Transfer to Molden, ca. 6 km to reach the trailhead. The first few km follow trails through the forest, then the path rises steeply and climbs to Svarthiller, with its spectacular view over the fjord towards Ornes. Leaving Svarthiller, the path turns and winds its way past steep crags before levelling out, where you reach the top of Molden, at 1116 m above sea level. The best view is to the east, over the innermost parts of Lusterfjorden with Nes and Høyheimsvik in the foreground. Molden is described as the finest viewpoint of the Sognefjord, with a panoramic view of the fjord arms and the high mountains of Jotunheimen. Return to Solvorn to relax and have dinner.

Optional services, advance booking not required: (2021 pricing) -Ferry to Urnes: 43 NOK, visit the famous Urnes stave church and hike from the church. You can also add this to an optional day. -Visit the inside of Urnes church – 90 NOK

Meals: breakfast, packed lunch & dinner Distance/Elevation: 10 km, 1116 m Highlights: magnificent Molden, Urnes stave church option Overnight: Solvorn

We had an AMAZING time on our Norway Hiking tour, and the trip definitely met or exceeded our expectations. We wondered (at the outset) if we could have found enough information to plan a trip this good ourselves, and came to the conclusion that we simply couldn’t. There’s just too much insider information that you can’t get from here, about hidden gems over there. And your local point person was a fantastic, flexible, accommodating. We had good luck with amazing weather, as a bonus. Highlights: Bergen hike at top of Floyen; Cider tasting and lunch; hike in Balestrand to top of fjord; both Walaker and Kviknes hotels (and meals); stave church visit. In Bergen, we would have preferred a hotel that was not so close to the shops and restaurants, but that is our preference. Overall, we had a great trip!

NORWAY GUIDED HIKING TOURS

The fjords of the lofoten islands are one of the most recognizable images in norway. mountainous islands that rise directly out of the arctic ocean with brightly painted villages clinging to the cliffed shoreline..

Ryder-Walker’s  Norway: The Islands of Lofoten  is an engaging trek that hops between islands and climbs to the summits of the local peaks. Along the way, you will stay in remote fishing villages that truly feel as though they are at the edge of the world .

Norwegian culture is a famously friendly one. Despite the cold and alien landscape, the Norwegian people are bright and full of life . Local delicacies range from the more adventurous and strange, such as Rakfisk – a pungent, fermented cod, to the absolutely delicious Norwegian fish stew which combines fresh fish with a hearty tomato base.

The history of Lofoten is one dotted with Viking lore as well as the stories of hardy local fishermen who have survived in a struggle with the unknowable Arctic Ocean. The arctic wildlife also plays a huge part in the Norwegian identity, with sightings of killer whales, puffins, and arctic foxes all a part of daily life in the country’s northern extremes.

Ever since Ryder-Walker first launched our Islands of Lofoten trek it has been one of the most consistently sold out treks in our inventory. It is easy to understand why when you see the beauty of cragged summits jutting out from the cold blue ocean alongside charming villages such as Henningsvær ,  which seem to exist in contradiction with the powerful nature that surrounds them. This bucket list location is one that truly evokes a sense of mystery and wonder from a variety of visitors, whether traveling by kayak or ferry between remote fjords or summiting Hellsegga – the highest peak in southern Lofoten. Hiking the remote stretches of Lofoten, Norway promises to offer a truly life-changing experience .

Hiking in Norway - A beginner´s guide

Walkers, hikers, ramblers and explorers, whatever terminology you prefer, Norway has something for you all with a myriad of mountains and forests, fjords and jagged coastlines.

Hiking in Norway is a revered national pastime with an extensive network of marked trails, good public transport connections, and ample accommodation options ensuring there are plenty of choices from short day-hikes to longer multi-day routes.

Adnillos

Norway has a reputation for stunning nature and breathtaking views. Instagram is filled with shots from hikes like Trolltunga , Preikestolen , Romsdalseggen Ridge , Besseggen Ridge and Segla. There are plenty of equally spectacular hikes, without the crowds, throughout the country. In this article, we will try to prepare you for your hiking holiday in Norway from a beginner's perspective.

Ingunn Egset

Fail to prepare? Then prepare to fail!

A bit of planning goes a long way if you’re considering hiking in Norway. It’s a good idea to choose a trail based on your physical abilities, knowledge and equipment. It is important to note that great views don’t always require an epic expedition to reach.

Trolltunga i Odda_Sveinung Klyve:www.fjordnorway.com.jpg

Choosing a trail

When choosing a trail it’s a good idea to read up so that you have a good understanding of the terrain and difficulty. Do not get caught in the Instagram trap of seeing tourists in dresses and flip flops on top of mountain views and assume that the hike will be easy.

For example, many people don’t realize that Trolltunga and Besseggen Ridge are both quite demanding full-day hikes that require some preparation and hiking gear for a safe and comfortable experience. We have passed many people on these routes who are scarily ill-prepared in terms of footwear, food, water and clothing.

Hegsam

Trails in Norway are classified with a color according to reflect their difficulty.

  • Green trails: Easy walks on fairly even terrain suitable for most people, but not always accessible to people with mobility constraints.
  • Blue trails: Medium difficulty and require average fitness. They are usually less than 10 kilometers long but may have some steep sections.
  • Red trails: Demanding hikes that typically cover longer distances but they can also be short and steep. It’s best to have some hiking experience and some routes may require a little rock scrambling. Correct footwear and clothing are a must. Some parts may be exposed to steep drops.
  • Black trails: Are expert-level and require mountain hiking experience. A typical black trail is a steep and exposed hike to a summit. If you have a fear of heights it’s best to avoid black trails.

Regardless of the trail you choose, keep track of how you feel, your supplies, and the weather. The Norwegian Mountain Code  is a list of principles to keep in mind and remember that there is no shame in turning around. Whatever your level, there are many great guiding services available in most parts of the country.

Keep your plans flexible

Weather and trail conditions are always a big factor to consider. There is a Norwegian saying that there is “no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” but it may be that you need to wait for some bad weather to pass until you get a nice day. Hiking in poor weather can prove dangerous if you are ill-prepared and it can of course affect the visibility of those stunning views you are looking for.

The weather will always do what it wants and can change in the blink of an eye with 4 seasons in a day, or even an hour sometimes. It is a good idea to wear layers of clothing in order to add more or strip off as the conditions demand. It is also recommended to carry something warm and dry that you can put on when you stop or finish to get out of anything wet.

Where to go hiking in Norway

Deciding where to go hiking in Norway depends largely on what kind of landscapes you would like to see. The classic Norwegian fjord experience of “Fjord Norway” in the west, Islands, and rugged coastline in the North or the tallest and most concentrated mountain peaks in Jotunheimen National Park in Central Norway.

Even a city break in Norway is a good opportunity to go for a hike. Do as the locals do and take one of the easily accessible trails around Oslo , Bergen , Ålesund , and Tromsø which lead quickly above the city for panoramic views. If you want to get an extra dimension to your hiking tour, you can combine a hike to Trolltunga with a local food experience.

Fjord Norway

Western Norway (known locally as Vestlandet) is home to the country’s most famous fjords. The Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest. One of its arms, Nærøyfjord near Flåm , is World Heritage-listed, as is the Geirangerfjord .

Throughout the region, trails lead up mountains and high above the fjords, through lush valleys, and past giant waterfalls. In summer the fertile fields grow delicious berries and apples that you can buy right at the farm gate (remember to have some cash on hand).

Alksander Espetvedt

Northern Norway

The land of the midnight sun, Northern Norway combines endless summer days with powerful nature and dramatic scenery. Traveling along the exposed coastline is an adventure in itself. Narrow roads and ferries connect islands and communities. Mountains leap from the cold ocean while the crystal clear water laps at white sandy beaches.

Northern Norway encompasses Helgeland to the south, the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos, Senja, Tromsø , and the North Cape.

Eastern Norway

With a vibrant capital surrounded by easily accessible nature, Eastern Norway is a natural hiking destination. Whether it’s a short hike from the end of an Oslo metro line or a four-day trek through Jotunheimen, the network of marked trails and selection of tourist cabins is arguably the best in the country.

Two of the most popular hiking destinations are the Jotunheimen and Rondane national parks. Jotunheimen is home to the highest peaks in Norway as well as the incredibly popular Besseggen Ridge. Rondane was Norway’s first national park and features a multi-day loop with tourist cabin accommodation.
