Bionic Reading: promises better, faster and more focused reading

bionic reading

Bionic Reading is a reading system that is designed to improve reading through the use of typographic highlights. The system highlights parts of words in texts to guide the human eye and have the human brain complete words automatically to improve reading speed and text understanding.

Jiffy Reader is one of the first browser extensions that brings the reading system to web browsers. It is an open source extension that is already listed on the Chrome Web Store . Users may check out the GitHub repository , as it is hosting the source code and extension files for Chromium, Firefox and Opera.

Note : we could not get the Firefox add-on to install, as Firefox returned a "corrupt" error during the installation process.

The Chrome extension installs fine in all Chromium-based browsers, including Chrome and Edge. The extension needs access to all pages that get opened in the browser. It is disabled by default and displays a configuration window when it is activated in the browser's toolbar.

The interface has a toggle to turn the reading system on or off. Since it is blocked from running automatically by default, hitting the toggle will enable the system on the active webpage. There is a checkbox to enable it by default, but this enables it on all types of sites, including non-article sites or pages.

Once enabled, bionic reading bolds parts of all of the words on the site; this may look like a badly formatted site to most users on first try. The system needs time to get accustomed to it.

The extension includes customization options to modify the reading system for all sites. The three main options let users change the saccades interval, the fixations strength, and the line height.

The saccades interval is set to 0 by default, which means that parts of most words are highlighted.  You may change its value to a positive integer to skip more words. Setting this to 1 will highlight every second or third word only in the text, which may improve readability for some readers.

The fixations strength parameter defines the strength of the highlighting. Setting it to a lower value will reduce the number of highlighted characters in the text, setting it to a higher value may increase it. Line height finally changes the height of lines in the article.

Closing Words

Bionic Reading is an interesting reading system that may not work for everyone. Some may dislike the chaotic display of text, others may find it to reduce the reading speed because of the seemingly random nature of the highlighting.

Chromium-based users may give it a try to see if it improves their reading comprehension and speed.

Now You: do you use speed reading or reading comprehension systems? (via Caschy )

Some people might find these helpful but for me it’s quite distracting reading sentences with bolded sections here and there.

Alternatively, one could learn to read.

Spectacularly useless program. There is no need for the brain to complete words automatically. They are already complete. Just read them.

Sounds like a very bad idea to me, and one that can – perhaps inadvertently – skew one’s understanding of what is being read. Glad that it can be toggled off easily. As for it being Russian, well I’m just not very afraid of Russian programmers. It isn’t the Russians who are impacting my life right now.

Martin – can you review and compare which one is best, in your opinion?

Your advice is highly appreciated!.

Bionic reading. Wow. Is it that in a world where everything is fast post-effects include that of reading at a traditional tempo, too slow, similar to walking at a normal pace after exiting a moving-sidewalk : odd feelings of being a snail?

Fast-food, fast-viewing, fast-reading. We have accelerators for videos (because no need to waste time when the brains understands it all at faster deployment?), accelerators for eating (why waste time calmly around a table when a burger and a coke fills in 10 minutes?), accelerators for moving around (why walk to the baker a mile away when the car is available?).

Maybe have we forgotten a time a pace of the past to the point of finding it hard to concentrate ow what allows less easily speed : the fact of reading. That would mean that bionic reading is the medicine.

Do I use speed reading or reading comprehension systems? I prefer to try by myself to imagine for the time being a bubble in which I return to another time-space continuum, calm, zen for the sake of reading independently of a stressing speedy environment. When finished, exit the bubble… and run, run, run, back to productivity, faster hence more, run, run, run for your life, buddy, run.

It’s Russian.

No bro. It is actually alien. Sickness is natural to life and humans certainly don’t need to take medication. We have legs and don’t need to use fords invention to get around quicker The Russians probably developed that 737 and disguised it as American. Don’t ever try to be fast, but that bolt guy wouldn’t listen to reason.

No on asked you but since you volunteered come and explain why it is Russian. We want to know if you sense reason or just sense of rubbish or special troll who is aching to unlock the next level troll achievements?

And it’s free on Chrome Web Store so no one’s actually supporting anyone.

It’s Russian, and? And what? Dostoevsky was Russian, Vodka is Russian. Will I forbid myself from reading and drinking Russian? I understand that an invaded country may have the human reaction of bashing anything related to the invader but for my part i consider this as a sad implication of sufferance and dramas. Sad but normal. But far from the war zone I believe another of my privileged situation is to be able to not mistake the crimes of a State with its inhabitants, its culture. I have nothing against Russian people, I have a terrible state of mind and state of feelings against its administration, only.

When the States invaded Koweit then Irak within the lie of hidden mass-destruction weapons, France opposed at the very United Nations and followed French bashing and French fries renamed Liberty fries at the White House canteens. Is this what we want in a civilized world?

A Russian ‘reading system’, approved by the authorities? So to ‘guide the human eye’ and ‘the human brain’, war and invading a neighbouring country becomes special military operation and butchering civilians, bombing hospitals, schools, residential areas, etc. becomes a peacekeeping mission to liberate said country from nazis?

No wonder Martin could not get the Firefox add-on to install and got a ‘corrupt’ error, while the Chrome extension installs fine. Google always had less scruples.

People, please don’t mix plain Russian people with totalitarian bunker rat and his propaganda slaves.

There are many neat russian projects on github, for eg IceCat Esr and Iceweasel for win64.

Note that there are sufficient people in Russia who are against war.

Hard times ahead. Z sh#t is corrupting people’s minds.

So true. Personally I appreciate as well not having to hear/read (I’ve heard it too often) the following comment which betrays one’s deep beliefs with the expression of its opposite. Replace [SCAN] with whatever denomination of color, religion, sexual orientation etc. etc …

“I don’t have anything against [SCAN], I even know some [SCAN] who are very nice people”

Really? How touching.

Jiffy Reader Review

By Med Kharbach, PhD | Last Update: November 18, 2023

Jiffy Reader is Chrome extension designed to enhance reading speed on any website. It employs a clever technique: selectively bolding parts of words. This approach is rooted in the understanding that the primary bottleneck in reading is not our cognitive processing, but our visual tracking. By making certain parts of words more visually prominent, Jiffy Reader can guide the eyes more efficiently across the text.

For teachers and students, this can be a significant boon. In an educational setting, where there’s often a vast amount of reading material to cover, being able to read faster without sacrificing comprehension is invaluable. Teachers can go through their preparatory materials more quickly, leaving more time for lesson planning and student interaction. Students, on the other hand, can benefit from this when tackling extensive reading lists, especially when they’re dealing with dense academic texts.

Jiffy Reader Review

Moreover, Jiffy Reader could be particularly helpful for students who struggle with reading. By reducing the visual strain and helping to guide the eye, it might make reading a less daunting task for those who find it challenging. This could potentially improve their overall engagement with the material and enhance their learning experience.

However, it’s important to consider that this method of reading might not be suitable for everyone. Some individuals may find the selective bolding distracting or even disorienting. It’s always a good idea to recommend trying it out and seeing if it aligns with one’s personal reading style. As with any educational tool, what works wonders for one student or teacher might not be as effective for another.

In my experience, integrating technology into reading practices requires a bit of trial and error. Encouraging students and fellow educators to experiment with Jiffy Reader and provide feedback could be a great way to assess its effectiveness and suitability for different learning environments.

Jiffy Reader and Students with Special Needs

Jiffy Reader , with its unique approach to enhancing reading through selective bolding of text, can offer several benefits to students with special needs. It’s important to recognize that each student’s needs are unique, so the effectiveness can vary. However, here are some potential ways Jiffy Reader might assist:

  • Improved Focus for ADHD Students : Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often struggle with maintaining focus, particularly with dense or lengthy texts. The bolding technique used by Jiffy Reader can help direct their attention to key parts of the text, potentially reducing distractions and helping to maintain focus on the reading material.
  • Visual Tracking Support for Dyslexic Students : Dyslexia often affects the way students process written words, making reading a challenging task. The selective bolding in Jiffy Reader can provide visual anchors, helping dyslexic students track text more easily. This can reduce the common problem of skipping lines or losing place, which is a frequent issue for readers with dyslexia.
  • Reduced Visual Strain : Students with visual processing disorders or other visual impairments might find reading standard texts strenuous and tiring. The bolded text in Jiffy Reader can stand out more clearly, reducing the effort required to decipher words and phrases, and thereby lessening visual strain.
  • Enhanced Reading Speed and Confidence : For students with reading difficulties, slow reading can affect their confidence and willingness to engage with text-based materials. By facilitating a faster reading process, Jiffy Reader might help boost their confidence and encourage more active engagement with reading tasks.
  • Support for ESL (English as a Second Language) Learners : ESL students often face challenges in quickly processing written English. The selective bolding can draw their attention to critical parts of words, potentially aiding in better and quicker comprehension.
  • Customization for Individual Needs : If Jiffy Reader offers customization options (like adjusting the level of bolding), it could be tailored to suit individual student needs, which is particularly beneficial in special education where customization is often key to effective learning.
  • Assistance in Developing Reading Skills : For students who are still developing their reading skills, the guided focus provided by Jiffy Reader can be a useful tool. It can help them in identifying and understanding the structure of words and sentences, which is a fundamental aspect of literacy.
  • Reducing Cognitive Overload : Students with cognitive challenges may become easily overwhelmed by too much text. By highlighting the most important parts of words, Jiffy Reader can help in reducing the cognitive load, making reading a more manageable and less daunting task.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, Jiffy Reader emerges is definitely an excellent Chrome extension as a that will help improve your reading speed and efficiency. It is especially helpful for students facing various reading challenges. Its unique bolding technique offers a range of benefits, from improving focus for ADHD students to aiding dyslexic learners in tracking text more effectively. It also addresses issues like visual strain and cognitive overload, making reading a more accessible and less daunting task for those with visual processing disorders or cognitive difficulties.

Jiffy web reader for chrome

The new Jiffy Reader extension for Google Chrome uses bionic reading to help users read content faster .

Bionic reading uses a combination of bolded letters to draw your eyes to specific parts of words, ideally allowing you to absorb the words you see much faster.

Jiffy Reader is available as a Chrome extension for download here . Using bionic reading, the extension highlights certain parts of a word that supposedly help users read the words more quickly and effectively.

So how exactly does it work?

Essentially, bionic reading bolds the first few letters of a word to highlight the entire word. The number of bolded letters can increase or decrease depending on the word’s length.

Check out the example below.

Bionic reading jiffy reader

READ MORE: Does this Bionic Reading app really make you a faster reader?

As you can see from the example above, bionic reading tends to bold the first half, or a little more than half, of every word on the page.

Our brains can recognize written words quickly based on a few letters. So bionic reading should, in theory, help you read those words even faster.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of bionic reading. In fact, I tried out the Jiffy Reader extension and found that using it made it more difficult for me to read articles effectively.

Maybe I just need more time with it, or perhaps I’m just too used to the old way of reading.

Nevertheless, bionic reading is an emerging technology many users and developers have begun gravitating toward.

And Jiffy Reader is one of the first Chrome extensions developed to enable bionic reading for any website you visit.
