Along with returning  Trek actors Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker), Doug Jones (Saru), and Armin Shimerman (Quark), other legacy and current-day stars reprising their roles in the new shorts include Ethan Peck (Spock), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), Connor Trinneer (Trip Tucker), Bruce Horak (Hemmer), Noël Wells (D’Vana Tendi), and George Takei (Hikaru Sulu).

(The trailer above also features Neelix from  Star Trek: Voyager , but actor Ethan Phillips isn’t credited in the official press release — so it’s not known yet who will be voicing that character.)

The studio has also released a poster to accompany  The Animated Celebration , featuring not only the original TAS  Enterprise crew and series-adjacent aliens, but characters from the  Discovery animated  Short Treks ,  Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: The Next Generation ,  Star Trek: Lower Decks, and  Star Trek: Prodigy

(The  Prodigy gang are included in this artwork because while Paramount+ may have removed the show from its streaming service, CBS Studios is the producer and owner of the property, rightfully keeping it represented with the rest of the Star Trek franchise.)

In addition to the shorts, Casper Kelly will also release a new comic from longtime  Star Trek collaborator IDW Publishing called  Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents ‘The Scheimer Barrier’ —  this was previously announced in detail in July.

The first issue will be released on StarTrek.com on September 8 as well, with physical copies coming to the IDW Publishing booth at New York Comic Con in October. Subsequent issues of The Scheimer Barrier will arrive each Wednesday along side the  VERY Short Treks on StarTrek.com.

Warp into Star Trek Day 2023 today with new animated 'very Short Treks'

The five retro-styled 'Star Trek' advertising shorts arrive starting Sept. 8, 2023

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the underrated "Star Trek: The Animated Series," which launched back in 1973 on NBC for just two seasons as a sophisticated Saturday morning cartoon with serious storytelling onboard courtesy of executive producers Gene Roddenberry and "The Original Series" writer D.C. Fontana.

To fortify CBS Studios and Paramount's official "Star Trek" Day 2023 celebrations on Friday, Sept. 8, "Trek" fans will have one more reason to cheer as the studio honors "50 Years of Star Trek Animation" with newly-minted "Star Trek: very Short Treks."

The first of these five retro-styled animated promotional spots blasts off this week for the global salute to the premiere of " Star Trek " on Sept. 8, 1966, alongside previously announced special events, as well as the first chapter of a new digital comic book series titled, "Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier."

Creative consultant Casper Kelly came up with the marketing idea for "Star Trek: very Short Treks." Kelly is mostly recognized for the viral online hit "Too Many Cooks," his involvement for the "Discovery"-era shorts, "Star Trek: Short Treks," and his work with Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Watch Trailer For ‘Star Trek: Very Short Treks’; Animated Shorts With Legacy Stars Debuts On Star Trek Day

As part of their celebration of the 50th anniversary of  Star Trek: The Animated Series  CBS Studios is launching a new series of animated promotional spots in the style of TAS featuring characters voiced by familiar Star Trek celebs.

Very Short Treks

First teased at SDCC, today CBS Studios revealed these shorts will be titled Very Short Treks . Five shorts will be released through September and October with the first episode “Skin a Cat” arriving on Friday, September 8 as part of the Star Trek Day celebration.

Check out the trailer…

As noted in the trailer, the key difference with the two-season series Star Trek: Short Treks is that these five animated shorts are not considered canon . However, there are a number of familiar stars reprising their roles for these shorts, including Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Doug Jones as Saru and Armin Shimerman as Quark, and a new line-up of exciting voices, including Ethan Peck as Spock, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Connor Trinneer as Trip Tucker, Bruce Horak as Hemmer, Noël Wells as Tendi, and the legendary George Takei as Sulu.

Star Trek: Very Short Treks comes from creative consultant Casper Kelly, best known for the viral smash hit “ Too Many Cooks ” and his work on Star Trek: Short Treks and Adult Swim.

The first animated spot will launch on Star Trek Day, Sept. 8, exclusively on StarTrek.com and the official Star Trek YouTube channel, with four additional animated spots rolling out weekly on Wednesdays through Oct. 4 at 10:00 A.M., PT/1:00 P.M., ET.

Titles and release schedule:

Sept. 8 – “Skin a Cat” Sept. 13 – “Holiday Party” Sept. 20 – “Worst Contact” Sept. 27 – “Holograms, All the Way Down” Oct. 4 – “Walk, Don’t Run”

CBS also released a new poster for their animation celebration.

Prodigy writer/producer wrote an episode

I wrote “Holograms, All the Way Down.” It’s strange and fun, a la Adult Swim. A loving tribute. Absolutely not canon. Hope folks enjoy it! #VeryShortTreks https://t.co/PaxSYG9RWS — Aaron J. Waltke (@GoodAaron) September 5, 2023

Animated celebration comic book too

Casper Kelly will also release a new comic book with IDW Publishing, “Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier.” The first chapter of the comic will debut digitally on Sept. 8 on StarTrek.com with physical copies available at New York Comic Con in October. Additional chapters of the comic will drop weekly on Wednesdays on StarTrek.com at 10:00 A.M., PT/1:00 P.M., ET.

Color me happy!

To quote Kirk “Sounds fun.”. Also Trip Tucker back. 👍👍

“Anything but canon” dashed my hopes of a secret reveal Trip survived. But yes, lovely to see that news!

He survived in the novels.

I hope they don’t use that terrible 70s style animation.

You’re kidding… right? For one thing, this is a celebration of the ’70s cartoon. For another, the trailer is very clearly drawn in that style.

The art style is fine, but I hope the actual animation is more modern than what they used back then.

Not at all. the 70s cartoon animation was cheap and bland.

I’m sure you guys can stomach it for one very short Trek. Yeah, it was cheap for the time, yeah it didn’t have too many frames, but it can be appreciated in the same way that TOS uses long takes and has, for our standards, cheap looking sets (although certainly not cheap for the time). There’s a nostalgia factor at play here and it works perfectly for the Filmation style they’re emulating.

AWESOME! Cant wait to watch.

Is this Canon btw?

Someone’s gonna complain about this. Not me, though, I’m pretty pleased to see the franchise explored in strange new ways….

Why would anyone complain about this lol. These look like a ton of fun.

YAAAAAY, Trip Tuker is back!!!

That better be Night Bird he’s playing.

Honestly, even with the non-canon, promotional nature, I’m really excited for this. The list of actors is pretty great. I love that they’re bringing on Trip, as the first Enterprise character to return in the modern era. Also, as someone whose favorite modern show is Prodigy, I’m especially looking forward to “Holograms, All the Way Down,” written by Aaron Waltke (my favorite Prodigy writer).

Still no official release of the original animated series on iTunes though. I really can’t believe it’s anything but an oversight at this point… :(

Never mind, they added it! THEY FINALLY ADDED IT TO ITUNES!!! I don’t know if anyone here helped with that but if you did, THANK YOU! I have been waiting for this for years!!! :) :) :)

iTunes still exists?

Yep! And know ST: TAS is available on it! Woo-HOO!!! :) :) :)

Yes, but it tries desperately to shove Apple Music down your throat.

Way to persevere! Next best thing to owning a physical copy in my book. And Apple upgrades old files to 4K as they become available.

EXACTLY! Thanks for understanding, Ian. I really love that series and part of me wanted to see it take its place with the others since it was the only one missing. And now it has, woo-HOO!! :) :) :)

How short is very short?

TAS is my favorite animated trek. I count it as year 4 of Kirk’s 5 year mission. It’s an amazing show written by amazing sci fi writers. I’m looking forward to the celebration of this show.

I see Enterprise gets some love. Finally!

Were these done before the strike, or are they covered by the animation contract?

Did Casper Kelly write this ATHF episode? Drewbacca, a shaved Wookie, is a member of a  Star Trek  tribute band.

It blows my mind they can’t find a role for Shatner anywhere.

He gets paid to show up at conventions. His action hero days are long gone.

A lot of action hero stunts required for voice actors in animation, are there?

I suspect that Shatner is either uninterested or is asking for too much money. I’m sure they would have loved to have Shatner do one of these if it was possible.

At least we got George..so one TOS cast member…

So how short is VERY short?

I have just started AI up-ressing Enterprise to 4K to rewatch the series. So happy Trip is coming back and I’m loving ‘… anything but canon!’ – a chance for some real fun, I’m hoping!

These look fun. Can’t wait to see Tendi on the original Enterprise even if it’s just a holodeck version. Still wish she could’ve been on the real one with Boims and Mariner.

And Trip Tucker is making a reappearance. This made me smile even if it’s not canon, still really cool.

I’m very excited for these shorts now.

If they’re not concidered cannon than why waste the money on these & make things that are cannon. Yay for Trip.

lol someone doesn’t like having fun I guess?

Why would we treat these as canon – they’re a celebration of a show for its anniversary. It’s like the kinda stuff studios make for any anniversary, except this time they’re having fun with animation. Seems like a great use of money to me

Its funny, just a few days ago in the LD s3 thread I posted about the idea of doing a LD crossover using TAS footage, a la TRIALS & TRIBBLEATIONS.

They’re really going to blow up the Enterprise AGAIN……. >.>

Honestly most excited I’ve been for a Trek production in years

If it’s on screen, it’s canon by definition. That’s how it works. I think they’re just poking fun at the original confusion introduced by Roddenberry after TAS’s original run when he at first denied it was canon, but then years later he changed his mind. Since this series is commemorating TAS, I suspect they’re just giving a tongue-in-cheek nod to that by saying it’s “non-canon” when of course it has to because it’s it’s on-screen.

Also, I found it really strange that this article didn’t even mention that Ethan Philips is apparently reprising his role as Neelix, as depicted in the trailer.

What a horror. Is it necessary to continue parodying Star Trek? The best homage would be to produce new animations of action, of intrigue, of something that doesn’t necessarily look like Rick and Morty.

Star Trek Day Is Coming! Here Are The Details For This Year's Celebration

Jeri Ryan, Nichelle Nichols, Michelle Yeoh, Sonequa Martin-Green, Anson Mount, Patrick Stewart, Tawny Newsome, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Star Trek Day poster

Ah, September: the month when the leaves start changing, students head back to school, and the world celebrates the anniversary of one of the most beloved franchises of all time. Star Trek Day is once again almost upon us, and this year's celebration includes a TV special, a prime-time re-airing of the newest "Trek" classic, and free theatrical screenings of select "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episodes.

September 8, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of "Star Trek: The Animated Series," a strange and sometimes silly saga that ushered in a new era of creativity for the then-still-young franchise. In honor of animated Trek's semicentennial, this year's Star Trek Day will have a special focus on the animation aspect of the long-running Paramount franchise. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" castmate Jerry O'Connell is set to host a special "salute to the franchise" that will include a look back at decades of "Star Trek" animation and a look forward to "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4.

The franchise is celebrating 50 years of animation

Meanwhile, in select cities across the US, UK, and Canada, fans can RSVP to "Star Trek: The Animated Celebration," an event screening of 4 "Lower Decks" episodes. The event also includes giveaways, free concessions, and other perks and surprises. Trek animation fans may also want to stop by the official "Star Trek" merch shop, where there will be collections curated for Star Trek Day and "Star Trek: TAS" specifically, and everyone can get 25% off with the code STARTREKDAY.

For those who can't make it to theaters, there are still ways to celebrate "Star Trek" from home: CBS is set to air the first two season 1 episodes of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" in a special back-to-back presentation, so you can show your grandma who never cut cable that endearing scene where the Enterprise crew sings to a planet to make it rain. In all seriousness, though, Star Trek Day is a great opportunity for international fans, as I know plenty of Trekkies who have been frustrated by the way Paramount+ is not accessible in their region. The Star Trek Day special will actually be available free worldwide on Youtube, Twitch, Facebook, and a special website dedicated to the holiday, plus on Paramount+ and other streamers and channels in the U.S.

Here's how to get in on the fun

In addition to celebrating Trek animation, O'Connell's special will revisit memorable moments in Trek history and bid farewell to the first of the Paramount+ era Trek shows, "Star Trek: Discovery," which will end after its upcoming 5th season. The attendance information for Star Trek Day events varies depending on your location, so make sure to check out the details below so you don't miss a thing.

You can register to attend a free "Star Trek: Lower Decks" showing in Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Vancouver, Calgary, or London via this link beginning August 24, 2023 at 9 am PT.

You can watch the Star Trek Day special in America via Paramount+, PlutoTV, Mixable, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, Pop TV, Fave TV, select CBS affiliates, and even on the Smithsonian website. Global fans can watch free at StarTrek.com/Day, or via YouTube, Twitch, or Facebook.

Finally, you can catch the first two episodes of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" on CBS at 8 pm ET/PT.

Celebrating the best of tv, movies, and comics

Star Trek: The Animated Series is returning with new shorts featuring Riker, Quark, and Saru

At San Diego Comic Con 2023, the network announced all-new animated TV spots and an upcoming IDW comic.

It's been 50 years since one Star Trek series took us into a bold, entirely strange new world: animation. And at San Diego Comic Con 2023, Star Trek's owner CBS Studios announced a tribute to the classic Star Trek: The Animated Series in honor of its very special golden anniversary.

CBS's salute to the series comes in two parts. The first will be five all-new animated TV spots in the style of the show's 1973 animation, but featuring Star Trek characters that came after the cartoon went off the air. So far, CBS has confirmed that three Trek staples are returning to voice their characters for the TV spots; those being Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Doug Jones as Saru, and Armin Shimerman as Quark. Check out their character designs below.

star trek the animated celebration

Interestingly, the animated TV spots will be spearheaded by Casper Kelly, known for the Adult Swim viral piece Too Many Cooks.

The second part of the animated series celebration will come in the form of comics, published by Star Trek's comic homebase IDW, and also written by Casper Kelly. The issues will be available digitally on StarTrek.com at first, then show up in print later. CBS has released a first look at the comic, which you can see here:

star trek the animated celebration

Judging just by the art, we can see that the comic, entitled The Scheimer Barrier, will have some sort of multiverse hopping going on, as the Lower Decks animation will be used in tandem with the 1973 style.

Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier will be available in physical form at this year's New York Comic Con, which is October 12 - 15.

Star Trek: The Animated Series is currently streaming on Paramount+ .

Popverse saw it and did most of it, and you can find all about our guide to All the big news, magic, and moments from San Diego Comic-Con . And if you want to go to SDCC next year, we have the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 dates as well.

  • An animated Star Trek: Enterprise revival could bring back beloved legacy characters & do season 5's planned storylines.
  • Animation is a cost-effective way to continue the series without the need for the original cast to physically appear.
  • Fans' enthusiasm for a revival, including the cast's willingness to return, makes an animated series a viable option for Paramount+.

Star Trek: Enterprise needs to be revived as a Star Trek animated series. The first Star Trek prequel series, Enterprise (its original title) was created by Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, and aired on UPN for 4 seasons from 2001-2005. Set in the 22nd century, Enterprise chronicled the pioneering voyages of the NX-01, the first Starship Enterprise commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula).

A far cry from the low-rated whimper Star Trek: Enterprise ended with, the prequel series has grown more popular in recent years, finding a more appreciative audience thanks to streaming on Netflix and Paramount+. Star Trek on Paramount+'s series have also brought back numerous Star Trek legacy characters, including the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation in Star Trek: Picard season 3. A happy result is that fans want to see more Star Trek legacy characters. The cast of Star Trek: Enterprise making a comeback is at the top of Trekkers' wish list, and the best way to make it happen today is with an animated series.

Star Trek: Enterprise Cast & Character Guide

Star trek should revive enterprise as an animated series, animation is the best way for enterprise to continue.

The topic of Star Trek: Enterprise making an animated comeback has been broached before, including at ST-SF: Trek To San Francisco, where Enterprise actors Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer answered a fan's question of whether they would be willing to return in an animated series with an immediate and simultaneous, "Yes!" As reported by TrekMovie , Keating followed up by extolling the virtues of animation for Star Trek actors :

Animation is fun to do. You can show up in your shorts and tee shirt. Ask the Lower Decks people.

There are numerous benefits to Star Trek: Enterprise continuing in an animated series. As a cartoon, an Enterprise revival could circumvent the fact that the cast is now 20 years older than when the series began. The controversy of Connor Trinneer's popular Commander Trip Tucker being killed off could be easily hand-waved. Voicing animation is also far less of a time commitment for Enterprise 's actors so that even the very busy Scott Bakula could find time to voice Captain Archer. The fact that voice-overs can be done from anywhere may also be what tempts Jolene Blalock, who has retired from acting, to return as T'Pol. Animation is also far cheaper to produce than live-action Star Trek .

Voicing animation is also far less of a time commitment for Enterprise 's actors so that even the very busy Scott Bakula could find time to voice Captain Archer.

Star Trek: Prodigy Proves An Animated Sequel Works For Voyager

If it works for voyager, it can work for enterprise.

Star Trek: Prodigy introduces a plethora of beloved new young characters, but the Netflix animated series is also a stealth sequel to Star Trek: Voyager . Along with bringing back Kate Mulgrew as both Hologram Janeway and Admiral Kathryn Janeway as a main character, Star Trek: Prodigy 's main story revolves around the missing Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran). Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 goes even deeper, with The Doctor (Robert Picardo) joining the series aboard the new USS Voyager-A. Prodigy season 2 promises to touch upon even more of Voyager and the greater Star Trek lore.

Star Trek: Voyager 's Lieutenant Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) also appeared in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2.

The biggest excitement caused by 2023's Star Trek: very Short Treks was the episode where Connor Trinneer voiced Trip Tucker. This was, essentially, a proof of concept that a Star Trek: Enterprise animated series would be welcomed. While Star Trek: Voyager is woven into Star Trek: Prodigy, an Enterprise animated series could easily pick up where the live-action UPN series left off and do the stories planned for Star Trek: Enterprise season 5 like setting up the Romulan War, a return to the Mirror Universe, and Shran (Jeffrey Combs) joining the NX-01 crew. The sky would be the limit for Star Trek: Enterprise as an animated series, and all Paramount+ has to do is give it a green light.

Star Trek: Enterprise is streaming on Paramount+.

Star wars celebration 2025 tickets officially go on sale in may, stunning new key art revealed.

The tickets for Star Wars Celebration 2025 go on sale in May, with a new poster revealing the colorful key art for the anticipated event.

  • Tickets for Star Wars Celebration 2025 go on sale starting May 3, with a pre-sale for 2023 Jedi Master VIP ticket holders.
  • Star Wars Celebration is skipping 2024, with the 2025 event set to take place in Japan.
  • Projects that could shown off at the 2025 event include: The Mandalorian and Grogu , Star Wars: New Jedi Order , Andor season 2, and more.

Star Wars Celebration 2025 gets its first official poster, with tickets for the event confirmed to go on sale in May. More than 45 years after the release of 1977's A New Hope , love for the franchise remains as strong as ever, and Star Wars Celebration has become a key way that Lucasfilm unveils new movies and TV shows to the world. After taking place in London in 2023, the anticipated event is skipping 2024, but it's set to make a big return in Japan in 2025 to provide a look ahead at upcoming Star Wars projects .

The official Star Wars Celebration account on X, formerly Twitter, now shares the official key art for the 2025 event, confirming that tickets go on sale starting May 3 at 7:00 pm EDT (U.S. Time) and 8:00 am JST (Japan Time)

Those who bought a 2023 Jedi Master VIP ticket will get first dibs on tickets with a pre-sale starting May 1 at 12:00 pm EDT. The announcement of the ticket sale dates and times accompanies the official key art for the event, which features Japanese cherry blossoms over a purple background, with Darth Vader ominously to one side.

What Can Viewers Expect From Star Wars Celebration 2025?

There are some exciting projects on the horizon.

While no official information has been revealed about what will be shared at Star Wars Celebration 2025, there are a number of exciting projects currently in the works in the franchise that could be major focuses. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie was announced earlier this year, for example, with production confirmed to start in 2024. The big-screen outing for Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and Grogu, which is directed by Jon Favreau, isn't set to hit theaters until May 2026, but it's possible that Star Wars Celebration will feature some kind of poster or teaser debut.

Will The Mandalorian Season 4 Come Before Or After Its Upcoming Spin-Off Movie?

Another project that could get some attention at the 2025 event is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Star Wars: New Jedi Order . This film, which will feature the return of Daisy Ridley's Rey in a story set 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , was announced at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration. No firm production start date has been shared for the film, but rumors suggest that filming could get underway in spring 2024, and comments from Obaid-Chinoy earlier this year suggest that this may be true.

Another project that was recently confirmed to be back in development is Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron movie, and it's possible that this project will get an update at the 2025 event.

Andor season 2 and Ahsoka season 2 could also be present in some form at the event. The former series was supposed to release in 2024, but it was pushed back to 2025 due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes last year. In addition to projects that have already been confirmed, it's likely that Star Wars Celebration 2025 will also feature some surprise announcements for movies or TV shows that haven't yet been revealed. Those looking to attend the event thankfully don't have too long left to wait before they can get their hands on tickets.

Today, Lucasfilm Ltd. and ReedPop debuted the key art for Star Wars Celebration Japan on StarWars.com .
