'Easy Rider' Movie Road-trip: follow the roads of youth, adventure and freedom!
Self-drive tour: car or motorcycle hire + hotel package.
There are motorcycle movies, and then there is Easy Rider. Over 55 years after the movie hit the silver screen, it still sets the standard by which all other biker and motorbike movies are judged. In 1969, it gave the world a mind-blowing taste of the freedom of the open road on a two wheeled chariot.
The whole world - and motorcyclists in particular, couldn’t get enough of it. Who could be so dead in spirit, they wouldn’t want to trade places with "Billy" or "Wyatt", even just for a day or two, on the open road? Well, now that dream can become a very tangible reality, as real as the roar of the engine or the feel of wind in your hair.
Scroll the highways of Southern California, then on through the harsh but unforgettable Death Valley. From there, you enjoin the historic trails of Route 66, driving all the way south to the party capital of Louisiana, the legendary city of jazz and blues and good times, New Orleans. There’s really no better way to say it. This is a classic American road-trip of a lifetime.
Rates for self-guide car tours (car hire with insurance + accommodation) for 1 or 2 (one room, one vehicle rental):
from US$3,341 with compact category car hire + US$550 (plus tax) drop-off fee payable at rental location in Los Angeles
from US$4,437 with convertible category car hire + US$550 (plus tax) drop-off fee payable at rental location in Los Angeles
Day 1: Arrive to Los Angeles , CA
They call Los Angeles the "City of Angels". Now whether you believe that, it’s still the perfect spot to rendezvous and have plenty of fun. You’ll have time for some sightseeing, or even to relax by the hotel swimming pool, before hitting the asphalt towards New Orleans. A few brews and a bite to eat, what better way to form bonds? We’re sure Billy and Wyatt would approve.
DAY 2 Los Angeles, CA - Death Valley, CA 292.0 mi / 467.2 km
You will cover a lot of ground today, literally. But the miles just fly by when you have the sense of anticipation for the adventures to come. Death Valley is a huge and unforgiving landscape, with high desert terrain and low valleys, is where Billy and Wyatt started out on their long, strange trip. There are stories aplenty from the movie, and the landscape dotted with little towns, hasn’t changed much at all since 1969. After a good day’s drive, you’ll sit around a bonfire at the hotel, and stare up at the incredible blanket of the night sky. Nothing beats spending a night in Death Valley.
Movie-location(s):
The key scene of Wyatt tossing his Rolex to the ground was staged in Ballarat, east of Route 178, between Trona and Stovepipe Wells on the western edge of Death Valley. As you can see, there’s little left of this ghost town (named after the Australian gold town), apart from crumbling ruins, though there is now a little store where you can pick up the basics.
DAY 3 Death Valley, CA - Needles, CA 178.0 mi / 284.8 km
The coolness of a morning in Death Valley is ideal for setting out towards Barstow, the renowned Route 66 town; familiar to Easy Rider fans and anyone who’s read Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. Then, if you are feeling wild and crazy enough, you can throw your Rolex away outside the ghost town of Ballarat, California. (Just like Peter Fonda did in the movie). Either way, we’ll leave the regular, timekeeping world behind in a cloud of dust, as you head for the Mojave Desert. The huge expanse of the Mojave lies between Death Valley and the town of Needles. Arguably one of the earth’s lonelier places, you’ll drive through the relics and remnants of little towns on Route 66, places that clung to life, many years after the dustbowl era of the great depression in the 1930s was over. This is no doubt, one of the most desolate stretches of Route 66. Passing by ghost towns, abandoned motels, defunct gas stations and abandoned mail boxes, we are now in the heart of the Mojave. Roaring along a road so straight and long the only end in sight is a vanishing point: if you aren’t feeling the Easy Rider vibe by now, it’s not our fault! The day ends with a dip in the refreshing waters of the Colorado, before you head into town. You won’t be looking for trouble, but maybe a bit of mischief. After all, if it was good enough for Easy Rider crew to use Needles as a base camp, it will serve you well for the night.
DAY 4 Needles, CA - Flagstaff, AZ 216.0 mi / 345.6 km
Behind the credits, Billy and Wyatt ride south on Park Moabi Road , from Park Moabi itself over the railtracks to what is now I-40, south of Needles on the California/Arizona border.
Just to the east on I-40, they cross the Colorado River into Arizona at Topock, and its three bridges (the old Trails Arch Bridge is the one crossed in the opposite direction by the Joad family in John Ford’s 1940 film of The Grapes Of Wrath).
And on to the motel, where the owner hurriedly turns on the ‘No vacancies’ sign once he realizes his potential customers are bikers. This was the Pine Breeze Motel at Bellemont , about 12 miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona. The stretch of Route 66, on which it stood, is now a disused section of East Bellemont Road, running alongside I-40. Ironically, the site is now a biker mecca. There’s a Harley-Davidson dealership, and the Route 66 Roadhouse Bar and Grill , 11840 West Route 66, Bellemont, displays the film’s original ‘No vacancies’ sign over the bar. The abandoned gas station and the motel itself can still be seen crumbling away on the bar’s grounds about a mile to the east.
DAY 5 Flagstaff, AZ - Monument Valley, UT 193.0 mi / 308.8 km
A little further north, the Sacred Mountain gas station , where the stranger they picked up insists they don’t pay for gas, has closed – but the building is still there, on the west side of US Route 89 at 150 Road, about 20 miles north of Flagstaff.
Turn onto US Route 89 for a few miles. Loop Road runs east toward Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, which is where the pair pick up the hitchhiking stranger (Luke Askew). Continue on to find Wupatki National Monument, Cococino, where they camp for the night in the ruins of the Wupatki Pueblo .
DAY 6 Monument Valley, UT - Durango, CO 140.0 mi / 224.0 km
Easy Rider film location: biking across Arizona, Billy and Wyatt pass by the Mittens: The Mittens, Monument Valley, Arizona . Still carrying their passenger, Billy and Wyatt ride northeast through the pink, red and gray strata of the spectacular Painted Desert and onto that great screen favorite, Monument Valley, made famous by John Ford in films such as Stagecoach and The Searchers.
DAY 7 Durango, CO 0.0 mi / 0.0 km
Day 8 durango, co - taos, nm 228.0 mi / 364.8 km.
The spring where Billy and Wyatt go skinny dipping with two girls is Manby Hot Springs, in the Rio Grande gorge, a couple of miles southwest of Arroyo Hondo, north of Taos. There’s room for five or six people in the naturally heated pools and clothing, as they say, is still optional these days.
The UK, writer DH Lawrence did settle in New Mexico. The writer’s last resting place is Taos, and it’s here that the interior of the jail was filmed , in what is now another gallery – Bryans Gallery, 121 Kit Carson Road.
DAY 9 Taos, NM - Amarillo, TX 300.0 mi / 480.0 km
Billy and Wyatt cheerfully tag along on their bikes behind a marching band.
The Parade was filmed in Las Vegas – not the glitzy casino city of Nevada but the tiny frontier town in New Mexico, on US Route 85 about 50 miles east of Santa Fe.
Thrown into jail for the heinous crime of “parading without a permit”, the pair meet up with dissipated lawyer George Hanson (star-to-be Nicholson). The exterior of the old jail can indeed be seen in Las Vegas, at 157 Bridge Street (it’s now art gallery Tito’s), and it’s on Bridge Street that George toasts old DH Lawrence with the first Jim Beam of the day.
DAY 10 Amarillo, TX - Abilene, TX 287.0 mi / 459.2 km
Day 11 abilene, tx - austin, tx 220.0 mi / 352.0 km, day 12 austin, tx - lake charles, la 290.0 mi / 464.0 km.
The southern bayou state of Louisiana was the setting for some of the most unforgettable, and painfully unforgettable scenes in Easy Rider; and today you drive Eastwards - out of Texas and into the heart of the south. It’s quite a long day, but the miles usually speed by in anticipation of thrills yet to come. With its unique mix of swamps, bayous, intriguing characters and old fashioned Southern charm, Louisiana is distinctly different to anything you’ve seen so far on this journey. Lake Charles is our second favorite city in the state, the favorite of course being New Orleans.
And Lake Charles comes alive and takes on a different character after sundown. Let’s see if the moonlight, and maybe even a little moonshine will allow the spirit of the bayou to touch you. Tomorrow, we make our way to the "Big Easy".
DAY 13 Lake Charles, LA - New Orleans, LA 245.0 mi / 392.0 km
Like it or not, the unhappy ending of Easy Rider was one of the reasons it was such a big hit, and became an instant classic. It was definitely not a Hollywood ending, to have our two anti-heroes shot and killed by a couple of rednecks. Filmed on a real country road on the outskirts of Krotz Springs, Louisiana, you drive that very same road today, pausing to reflect on how one disturbing but incredibly powerful movie would shape the lives of motorcycle riders everywhere. To drive this particular route is the experience of a lifetime, but sharing it with others lifts it into something hard to define. Billy and Wyatt begin to feel so real, it’s like you could reach out and touch them. But that’s enough sobering reflection. You end the day with a short drive into the party capital of the south, the battered but unbroken New Orleans.
The town seems to have missed out on a major tourism opportunity here, as the scary Redneck Café , which stood on the east side of Gayden Road just south of Campbell Street, has been torn down. You can still see the entrance steps, which now lead to an empty plot of land.
All that’s left is the journey home. About 30 miles west of Baton Rouge, on the Atchafalaya River, stands Krotz Springs. It’s maybe a little too close to Morganza for comfort, and it’s on North Levee Road (US Route 105), just north of town, that the film ends with a brace of shotgun blasts .
Donning his gold football helmet, Hanson joins the pair’s journey to Mardi Gras . Even the crazily fearless Hopper had second thoughts about filming a hippie epic in late Sixties Lone Star state. So Texas seems to have just gone missing, and it’s straight on to Louisiana, with a burst of Hendrix If 6 was 9, and the Long-Allen Bridge , carrying Brashear Avenue (the old LA 182) over the Atchafalaya River from Berwick to Morgan City.
Past the clutch of plantation houses familiar from so many other movies, to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and time to drop those acid tabs in – where else? – a cemetery. The cemetery , the city’s oldest, is St Louis Cemetery No.1, 1300 Saint Louis Street at Basin Street, west of the French Quarter.
DAY 14 New Orleans, LA
Almost as soon as Easy Rider opened in cinemas across the US, bikers were drawn to New Orleans as if by magnetic force. Those notorious bordello and graveyard scenes were a potent synthesis of the drug culture and biker scenes, that both made such an indelible mark on the 60s decade. Nobody could argue that Billy and Wyatt were living their lives out on the edge, all in the name of freedom. New Orleans was the ideal backdrop. These days, your experience of New Orleans may not be as "psychedelic," but it will be just as memorable, arguably more so, without a head full of acid! It’s still undeniably a trip, to visit the same spots in New Orleans which you have seen on screen for all these years. The year round carnival atmosphere of the French Quarter would appeal to all but the most puritan of travelers. This evening, you feast on crawfish and gumbo, and celebrate all that you’ve accomplished on this journey. What better time to raise your glasses in a toast to Billy, Wyatt, George, and the late, great Dennis Hopper? It’s time for some celebration. After all, you just made it!
Congratulations on having lived a dream, one that most of even the most ardent fans of Easy Rider will get to experience. After this, what could possibly come next? Canada to Yellowstone? Route 66? The Wild West? Canada to Yellowstone? Hopefully, it will only be a matter of time before you are on the road again. Until then Easy Riders, keep your chrome up. On a practical note, if you’d like to stay in New Orleans a few more days – and who could blame you – we will happily make arrangements on your behalf.
DAY 15 New Orleans, LA - departure (guided motorcycle tour only)

I did a partial Route 66 in 2021 from Chicago to Oklahoma City and failed miserably. Due to lack of information, I was running out of time and in the end I had to ride the rest of the trip on the interstate. A year later I did the entire part all the way to L.A. had a totally different experience. It wouldn't have been the trip of a lifetime if it wasn't for rides4you and their incredible experience and guideline for this trip.

These GPS files saved my butt a few time I guess. It's hard to say how I would have done without them but I feel I would have gotten lost at several points throughout the journey. Priceless info!

I spent hours and days trying to figure out what I wanted to see and which routes I would take on my first bike vacation in the U.S. It got overwhelming, there's just so much to see. Then I turned to rides4you and picked one of their best 10 tours, the Yellowstone tour. Believe me when I say: these guys know their sh**!! Never had the feeling that I missed something during my ride. Plenty of info and well dialed in daily hours/mileage ratio.

The ultimate USA coast-to-coast road trip
It’s hard to think of a country with more iconic motorcycling roads than the USA. Names like the Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, the Million Dollar Highway, and Pikes Peak roll off the tongue with ease.
But it’s not only the roads that are famous. Iconic sights like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Monument Valley, the Hoover Dam, and Death Valley can be reeled off like a Hollywood A-list of destinations to see before you die.
But in a country that popularised the road trip as we know it, there is one journey that stands out for us above all the others – the coast to coast. Crossing this vast and eclectic country along its highways, byways, turnpikes and back roads has long fuelled the imaginations of novelists, musicians, movie makers, and the everyday man and women with a thirst for the horizon.
On the road
Whether you’re coming of age like Jack Kerouac’s Sal Paradise in the novel On The Road , or you’re following in the counter culture tyre tracks of Easy Rider ‘s Captain America, a coast-to-coast ride across the USA is a journey of discovery you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
One of the joys of the coast to coast is the fact you can start and finish wherever you want, as long as you travel from ocean to ocean. But with this freedom comes tough choices. For every road you ride and sight you see, there are thousands you miss out on.
When faced with decisions like this, we tend to seek out local knowledge. So, we contacted USA motorcycle travel experts Unchained Tours to put together the ultimate USA coast-to-coast road trip. One that balances must-see attractions and iconic roads with the opportunity to immerse yourself in the journey and experience the true spirit of the great American road trip.
Unchained Tours have crossed the USA on motorcycles hundreds of times and the journey that follows is their tried and tested route.
Norfolk, Virginia
Unchained Tours recommends shipping your bike to the USA rather than renting once you’re in the country. The thinking behind this is you can ship your bike, luggage and all your gear in a container, and be ready to ride immediately, without the hassle and fuss of renting bikes and gear. With this in mind, the tour company recommends shipping your bike to Norfolk, Virginia, on the Atlantic coast and beginning your coast-to-coast ride from there.
Great Smoky Mountains
Leaving Norfolk behind, the route drops down into North Carolina and heads to the Great Smoky Mountains and the infamous Tail of the Dragon. Also known as Deals Gap, this twisting road features 318 curves over 11 miles. It’s an iconic road for bikers in this part of the USA and one you’ll be glad you ticked off your bucket list.
Lynchburg, Tennessee
Crossing into Tennessee, we ride to the small town of Lynchburg. Despite having a population of less than 6,500 people, it’s become a world-famous tourist attraction thanks to its local produce, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whisky.
You can take the distillery tour and relive fond memories of your journey in the USA every time you pour yourself a Jack and coke back home.
Texas Plains
Our route crosses Arkansas into Texas and across the Texas Plains. This is big country. You’ll roll your wheels under huge skies across the prairies, along arrow straight roads stretching to the horizon. You can almost taste the freedom.
Heading north through Texas, our route dips into New Mexico and then into Colorado to the legendary Pikes Peak. This snaking stretch of road is the location of the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Featuring 156 turns spread over 12.42 miles, this stretch of highway has become a must-ride mountain road for bikers around the world. It’s so good, Ducati named a Multistrada after it.
Million Dollar Highway
Our journey continues through Colorado heading south west to ride the Million Dollar Highway. This is one of the most scenic rides in the USA, built at a huge cost through the inaccessible San Juan mountains. Expect plenty of tight turns, magnificent mountain roads, and a highway cut into the side of cliff faces.
Bryce Canyon
Our route leaves Colorado behind and takes us through Utah to one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the USA, Bryce Canyon. It features the largest concentration of hoodoos (irregular columns of rock) on earth. Rather than simply being one canyon, this geological marvel is made up of a series of natural amphitheatres.
Grand Canyon National Park
No journey across the western states would be complete without a visit to the Grand Canyon. We cross the state line into Arizona to marvel at this natural wonder which was carved out of the rock over millions of years by the Colorado river. In total, the Grand Canyon is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and one mile deep.
Located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, the Hoover Dam is a marvel of modern engineering. It stands 221 metres high and produces enough hydroelectric energy to power the lives of 1.3 million people each year. Riding across the nearby bridge, you get a stunning view of the dam in all its glory.
There’s something special about cruising along the Las Vegas Strip at night on a motorbike. It’s loud, it’s brash and the lights are dazzling, but boy is it fun. Park up the bike and indulge in the delights of Sin City for the night and hope your hangover isn’t too bad tomorrow.
Death Valley
Leaving the bright lights of Las Vegas behind we cross into California and ride through Death Valley. Famously known as the hottest place on earth, this rugged and barren landscape has a beauty all of its own. Cruising through this desert is an other-worldly experience. Just ensure you take plenty of water with you.
Yosemite National Park
Staying in California, our route winds north to Yosemite National Park. This majestic landscape is world-renowned for its natural beauty. Expect to see waterfalls, giant sequoia trees, and awe-inspiring cliff faces like the iconic El Capitan. As you ride through the park, you may well encounter one of the 300-500 black bears living there.
Pacific Coast Highway
From Yosemite, we head west across California to one of the most famous roads in the world – the Pacific Coast Highway. This stunning ribbon of tarmac runs along the length of the country, but it is the stretch of California coast that has fired the imaginations of travellers for generations. Cruise along this iconic highway and soak up the spectacular ocean views that have signalled the end of so many coast-to-coast adventures across the USA.
There are plenty of memorable places to finish a coast-to-coast journey, whether you put the brakes on at San Francisco Bay, Santa Monica Pier, or Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Unchained Tours will ship your bike back to Europe from the town of Santa Rosa. With this in mind, we’ll end our journey on the Marin Headlands overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge before cruising north along the Pacific Coast Highway and finally dropping our bike off at Santa Rosa.
Ride this USA coast-to-coast road trip
Do you want to ride this route? Unchained Tours will lead you on a three-week adventure along this spectacular coast-to-coast route. You’ll be provided with an experienced and knowledgeable guide and support rider who’ll ensure you have the ride of a lifetime. All accommodation is organised on your behalf so you can spend your time enjoying the ride.
Take your own bike or rent?
It’s a decision all of us living outside of the USA have to make when planning an American road trip on two wheels. Renting a motorcycle in America can be costly, but shipping your bike can be a huge hassle, especially if you’re only spending a few weeks on the road. Unchained Tours hits the sweet spot by shipping your motorcycle to and from the USA for you in one of their fully insured containers.
They handle all the paperwork so all you need to do is turn up and ride your bike away. Even better, you can pack all your gear inside the container, so you don’t have the hassle of renting helmets, jackets, or any equipment abroad.
Unchained Tours
Elsewhere in the USA, Unchained Tours offers adventures in Alaska, the Pacific North West and through the mountains and canyons of the West . For riders looking for adventure outside of the America, Unchained Tours also organises journeys through Patagonia, Portugal, and Morocco . The company will ship your bike and gear to all these destinations so you can arrive and ride without fuss. Sounds perfect to us.

Their existing relationships give you special access to the New Zealand many tourists don’t get to see.

Experienced Multilingual Tour Guide!
14 Riding Days 16 days vacation.*
U.S. Route 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year.[4] The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).[5] It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s.
Day 2 : Arrive in Chicago, Illinois
Day 2: You arrive at Chicago International Airport and transfer to your hotel. (Day 1*)
*Approximate mileage: 150 miles (only for day 1 arrivals)
* Optional: Today you can choose to join us for the day with a leisurely ride to the Harley-Davidson motorcycle museum* in Milwaukee (Optional) or take in the sights and sounds of Chicago, the choice is yours!
Tonight you will enjoy a great Welcome Dinner and celebration with your fellow riders, and a great night of luxury in one of Chicago finest hotels before kicking off your dream Best of Route 66 journey in the morning. We do recommend arriving a day early to enjoy a free tour of the city!
Day 1: Arrive in Chicago, Illinois
Day 1. You arrive at Chicago International Airport and transfer to your hotel.
Chicago, on Lake Michigan in Illinois, is among the largest cities in the U.S. Famed for its bold architecture, it has a skyline punctuated by skyscrapers such as the iconic John Hancock Center, 1,451-ft. Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. The city is also renowned for its museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago with its noted Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works.
Day 3: Chicago to Jacksonville, IL
Approximate mileage: 211 miles
This is where your riding adventure starts, all the anticipation and build up to your Route 66 tour. Leaving Chicago all refreshed after your flight we head off through the town of Joliet with a visit to the Route 66 tour Museum.
From there we ride past the Gemini Giant (pictured in this image) at the entrance to Wilmington. For those who are up to it, we will call in at another Route 66 tour Museum in Pontiac before reaching the town of Springfield for the night.
Day 4: Chicago to Jacksonville, IL
Approximate mileage: 205 miles
Today we ride towards the town of St. Louis! Sticking to the 2 lane sections of the “Mother Road”. As we arrive into St. Louis, Missouri, you will not fail to notice the magnificent Gateway Arch. This gleaming, stainless steel structure welcomes you in style.
We will also visit the Chain of Rocks Bridge, the original bridge where Route 66 crossed the Mississippi River. St Louis rests along the banks of the Mississippi River and has some of the best restaurants in the country, there is live music playing everywhere and BBQ ribs are a specialty not be missed.
Ride Route 66One of the attractions of the day is calling in to have your picture taken under a giant rocking chair that’s 46 feet tall was set up on old Route 66 four miles west of Cuba. It’s next to the Fanning U.S. 66 Outpost & General Store in the tiny settlement of Fanning. From there we ride on to Rolla for the night where there are plenty of exceptional restaurants to eat dinner. The BBQ ribs are a specialty not to be missed.
Day 5: Jacksonville, IL to Rolla, MO
Approximate mileage: 186 miles
Today we ride to the town of Joplin, MO. As we leave Rolla on old Route 66 we can start to enjoy the rolling Missouri countryside that makes this area such a beautiful and exhilarating place to ride. An early attraction for today is a ride over the “Devil’s Elbow Bridge” on the Big Piney River.
The rest of the day’s riding will weave along as much of Route 66, through Springfield before reaching Joplin for the night.
Day 6: MO to Oklahoma City, OK
Approximate mileage: 238 miles
Today is a great days riding as we head towards the “Windy City” of Oklahoma. Our first stop is just over the state line into Kansas to ride over the Marsh Arch Bridge. The riding is easy going as we head for lunch.
Following lunch we visit the famous Blue Whale which has become one of the most recognizable attractions on old Route 66 in Oklahoma. The Blue Whale and its pond became a favourite stop and swimming hole for both locals and travelers alike.
Day 7: OK to Amarillo, TX
Approximate mileage: 310 miles
Today’s ride goes up a notch in terms of mileage. After breakfast we start riding towards Clinton to visit the Route 66 museum. This is a great place to purchase those all-important “Route 66” gifts. Feeling inspired by the memorabilia within the museum we mount our trusty steeds and ride off America’s mother road Route 66. A light lunch is the order of the day.
Big TexanIf anyone feeling up for a challenge, today’s the day! You will be eating dinner at the world famous Big Texan steakhouse in Amarillo famous for the 72oz challenge. To date has not had anyone brave enough to take the ultimate challenge, could you be the first?
Day 8: TX to Santa Fe, NM
Approximate mileage: 282 miles
If you were wondering why there was “a can of spray paint” on your kit list, this is the reason! Our first stop is to the Cadillac Ranch a short ride from the hotel. When you have finished being a graffiti artist we ride off into the distance on Route 66 to the historic city of Santa Fe for dinner and a much needed rest.
Day 9: NM to Gallup, NM
The Roadrunner State beckons adventurers with atmospheric small towns that radiate authenticity. Gallup is easy to get to and easy to love. A slice of Americana rarely seen nowadays, it has barely changed since Route 66’s mid-century heyday. The drive from Santa Fe to Gallup whisks you across spectacularly scenic Route 66, now prosaically known as I-40.
Where mile-long Santa Fe Railroad freight trains chug alongside 66 in the shadow of towering orange mesas, where magic hour seems to stretch forever, erupting in blazing vermilion sunsets.
You’ll know when you’re in Gallup; its vintage neon signs twinkle like tinsel strung on Route 66.
Once a railroad hub, Gallup is now the commercial capital of the vast, 300,000-strong Navajo Nation homelands that surround it.
Day 10: NM to Holbrook, AZ
Approximate mileage: 287 miles
We have a surprise in store for you as the group heads north for a ride through the Salt River Canyon where you will be astounded by it’s natural beauty. In the afternoon you will experience a number of iconic Route 66 sights and landmarks as we take time to enjoy the beauty of the landscape. We then head off to “the wigwam motel” for an evening with a difference.
Day 11: via the Grand Canyon, AZ
Approximate mileage: 352miles
An early start takes us to the town of Winslow for a great photo opportunity and chance to pick up some Route 66 souvenirs. This is followed by a ride out to visit the Meteor Crater. From there we head off to Flagstaff for a light lunch. After lunch we enjoy a ride down through Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona and Jerome National Park, we then ride north again to visit the Grand Canyon before ending the days ride at one of the most iconic Route 66 towns called Williams for an evening of entertainment and food.
Day 13: Rest Day in Las Vegas, NV
Approximate mileage: 98 miles
Today is designed as a rest day for you to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Las Vegas Strip (Remember, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!). There will be optional rides and activities available including the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.
Day 12: AZ to Las Vegas, NV
Approximate mileage: 286 miles
This morning we head west to the historic ghost town of Seligman where we will ride along old Route 66 for an early lunch at a classic old Route 66 Diner in Kingman. After lunch, we take in the amazing town of Oatman before landing in Las Vegas for the afternoon and evening of fun.
Day 14: NV to Victorville, CA
Approximate mileage: 234 miles
After a lazy start, we leave Las Vegas and head south through Searchlight for an interesting outer-space encounter in the town of Baker. We then ride into Barstow and stay on Route 66 for the rest of the day where the scenery and roads will take you back to time gone by.
route 66Continuing South West we leave Nevada and ride into California for a stop at the Bottle Tree Ranch and California Route 66.
route 66There is a wide range of typical Route 66 memorabilia for you to purchase.
Day 15: Santa Monica Pier, Los Angeles, CA
Approximate mileage: 220 miles
As we head off for the “end of the trail” sign on the Santa Monica Pier on our final days riding along America’s Mother Road Route 66, we snake our way over the Angeles Mountains for 67 miles of riding heaven. There will be an opportunity relax, eat and enjoy the sunshine before heading to the hotel to park the bikes for the last time.
end of the trailIn the evening there will be plenty of time to relax before we sit down for a celebration meal together whilst reflecting on the weeks achievements.
Day 16: Time to return home
Enjoy the morning in Los Angeles before your flight home

Jessica Abrego From: Hewlett, New York, USA Email: [email protected] I took a six day tour with Thuy and her husband Long from October 19th to October 24th, 2012. I was having a rough time in Hanoi before I met them, but the minute I got on a bike I was much happier. One gets a better feel for the rhythm of the culture in the street than on the sidewalks. My tour headed north, to Ha Giang, Dong Van, Meo Vac, Cao Bang, and Bac Kan before returning to Hanoi. The first day was a bit rough adjusting to the bike (wear jeans!) but the scenery was stunning. Every day after that I enjoyed being on the road more and more, to the extent that I actually extended my trip an extra day because I didn’t want to rush. We had good weather most of the time, but one day it poured. Long went out and bought me a rain suit right away. Even in the rain, on treacherous mountain roads, I was never nervous about the bikes or Thuy’s driving. It was actually quite beautiful and strange to drive slowly through the opaque mist, like something out of a movie. Thuy and Long became my friends in no time at all. We had a wonderful time together: talking, joking, eating delicious food, sharing cigarettes. It was a lovely adventure: we shopped in little local markets, drank with Hmong villagers, bargained for a pig (that we slaughtered in Hanoi and ate at a big welcome home feast at their house), sang karaoke on stage at a Women’s Day event in Dong Van, played with charming little kids, saw an incredible diversity of ethnic groups in their villages, rode a boat and stayed in a homestay in Bac Kan… we even bought two little country puppies for Thuy and Long to keep as pets. (Imagine a pig and two puppies plus three people and five days worth of stuff on the backs of these bikes — what could be more Vietnamese?!) Seriously, I couldn’t have imagined how great my trip would be. I learned so much about Vietnamese culture and made great friends. I cannot recommend Hanoi Easyrider highly enough: great company, great people, and a wonderful experience all around.
