Travelling as a nurse: Don’t be afraid to follow your heart!

Have you ever imagined yourself travelling the world as a nurse and experiencing healthcare abroad? I have, but I never thought I could make it work until I set my mind to it and gave it a try. And guess what? It’s the best decision I have ever made!

If you're here, you're probably wondering, "Can travel nurses travel internationally?" The short answer is yes but not in the way you're used to working. While you might be able to find a program or two that sets you up with travel nursing overseas jobs and helps you get established as a international registered nurse, that's not the only way I've done it.

As a nurse registered in my home country, The Netherlands, I've been able to use that training and certificate to find nursing jobs around the world. Some jobs have been paid, others have been volunteer gigs, but all have brought me to incredible places and given me valuable experience, both in life and in the field.

Here are 6 big travel nurse tips that are sure to help you find your next nursing job abroad.

1. Start off with a volunteer role

I have always wondered what healthcare abroad would be like so I decided to go for it.

‍ My first step was to volunteer as a nurse abroad , so I started my search on the internet to find the right organization and hospital to volunteer for.

After a while of searching I found this organization that I could volunteer for in Ghana so I decided to sign up for it and start the journey. After that I signed up for another volunteering project in Thailand and currently I’m working as a nurse in Aruba .

While I've been asked countless times, "Can you be a travel nurse in Europe?" my expertise lies in Asia and the Caribbean. While I do think international travel nursing in Europe is a viable path, I do know there would be a lot more red tape and hurdles to jump over to find jobs country to country.

If you're a veterinary nurse, read more here about finding jobs in that specific field.

2. Know the requirements to get hired abroad

  • You need to have your nursing degree and usually they are happy if you have at least 2 years of experience as a nurse.
  • Make sure you have the right visa before starting your job/volunteering position. Usually the organization or healthcare organization can help you with it.
  • You need to be open minded and flexible
  • You should not be afraid to live in a new environment and adapt to a new culture.
  • Try learning the local language so you’ll be able to communicate with your patients and colleagues. They really appreciate it if you make this effort and you will get a better experience.

3. Know what opportunities you have as an international travel nurse

*use specific companies to browse job openings.

You can try to find a company that wants to send you abroad as a nurse.

In my home country, the Netherlands, there are many companies that offer you jobs abroad (Healthz, TMI, BKV) and I’m sure, with a little research, you’ll find organizations like this supporting your home country.   I chose to use Healthz and would highly recommend them. They are very well organized and personal when you're in contact with them.

*Look for organizations to volunteer

You can try to look for an organization to volunteer for. But be aware: many organizations ask a lot of money for you to volunteer for them. But don’t worry, there are more options for you.

*Get quick experience with Workaway, Worldpackers or Hovos

Are you looking for a cheaper option? You could volunteer with Workaway or Worldpackers . Or check the website, Hovos to see if there are hosts offering what you are looking for. They usually provide you accommodation and sometimes also food. There are not so many hosts offering a medical position though but you might find yourself lucky to do so.

*Visit a hospital abroad & offer your experience

If any of this sounds too difficult to you or you cannot find what you are looking for, you might try your luck just to visit a hospital abroad and ask if they can show you around to get a bit of an impression.

In the past, I’ve walked inside of hospitals and asked at the front desk of the main entrance if it would be possible to have a look around.

Of course you have to introduce yourself to them and tell them what you are looking for. One time in Sri Lanka I was lucky enough to meet a local that could bring me to the hospital to introduce me and ask them to show me around. I think that’s the best way of talking yourself into a hospital. I was able to then market myself as a valuable volunteer for them.

I did this a few times while travelling in South East Asia and got warmly welcomed each time. I’m not sure if you can try it anywhere else in the world, but in Asia, I know from experience it's fine. They even quickly offered me an unpaid job and accommodation if I wanted to stay!

4. Know the benefits of being a travel nurse abroad

  • A lot of experience! Besides that, it also looks good on your resume.
  • A great adventure! Not only while working, but mostly also in your free time. You can explore the country and the local way of life.
  • A local experience! I think that’s the best travel experience you can get to live the local life and learn about their culture and way of life.
  • New friendships! During my time working abroad I’ve made some beautiful friendships that have lasted even after I’ve returned home. ‍

5. Learn from my experience abroad

*as a travel nurse in ghana.

My first time as a nurse abroad was in Ghana, where I volunteered for a hospital for 1 month. At first it was a big culture shock and a completely different way of working than in our western world, but if you stay open minded and are willing to adapt to their way of working , I’m sure you’ll have a great experience!

*As a travel nurse in Thailand

After that, as I mentioned before, I started volunteering in Thailand for 2 months, where I was very warmly welcomed by all of the nurses and rotated shifts in each ward of the hospital. They adopted me into their big nurses family, taught me a lot about Thailand and their culture, and up till now I have so many (nurses) friends around that village that I visit every year and of course I also visit the hospital while I’m there. I even started learning their language because it feels like my second home now.

Want to know more about my story and why I quit my job to travel the world? Read about it here .

*As a travel nurse in Aruba

Currently I am working as a nurse in Aruba for 3 months, sounds good right? Living on a tropical island and getting paid for it?! I wonder what will be my next destination…?

6. Understand the differences between being a nurse abroad vs. in your home country

The biggest difference is the language and the way of working.

The patients that you take care of are mainly the same as in my home country, and so are their diagnoses and typically their treatments.  But you have to go “ back in time” with the medical supplies and sometimes have to be very creative with the supplies that you have got.

In Ghana, for example, there was a lack of bandages and when I was taking care of my patients wound, I found out that we were out of bandages and I couldn’t take care of the wound properly anymore. At that moment you feel so lucky that you are originally working in a western world, where you have all the supplies you need (and waste a lot of them!).

Travel Nurse Follows Her Heart to Ghana

winter_holidays_mittened_hands_making_heart_shape

By E’Louise Ondash, RN, contributor

Looking at the recent photo of travel nurse Sheila Evans, RN, surrounded by some of the children of Ghana, you can feel her energy and enthusiasm for this West African country and some of its most unfortunate citizens.

“These are children who sleep on dirt,” Evans said. “They don’t even have cardboard boxes. They share their food. They have to use public bathrooms. They have nothing, but they are so joyful.”

The photo and many others were taken in December when Evans spent 10 days in Ghana, much of it in the capital city of Accra. She was drawn to this city, just a few degrees north of the equator, by lifelong friend LaTanya Phelps of New York City. Phelps is an educator and school administrator who also worked in the inner city as a speech and hearing therapist. Phelps and her 15-year-old daughter recently visited Ghana, intending to vacation, “but they ended up spending every day in Nima, a large slum,” Evans explained. “It’s mostly Muslim and the people there are so poor.”

Upon returning home, Phelps and her daughter felt the need to do something for the children of Nima. Out of this mother-and-daughter experience grew Survival of the Children Foundation , a nonprofit organization that raises money for food, clothing, education and HIV/AIDS advocacy for Nima’s children.

The Republic of Ghana, formerly called the Gold Coast, was under European and British rule until 1960. More than a quarter of Ghana's population survives on less than $1.25 a day, a quarter of the youth are unemployed, and age expectancy is 62.

Phelps also urged Evans “to go and enjoy the experience of Africa because it is really is life-changing.”

Evans didn’t hesitate, and she felt fortunate that her flexibility as a travel nurse allowed her to take the trip in between assignments. Once in Ghana, Evans explored Kakum National Park and LaBadi Beach, and spent much of her time in Nima, although she did not work directly with the foundation on this trip.

“I soaked up the culture, fell in love with the kids, and just learned to appreciate my many blessings even more,” she said.

Building on an early love of travel

Now a travel nurse for American Mobile Healthcare, an AMN Healthcare company, Evans grew up a self-described Army brat. Her love of travel, she said, came from her parents, who took the family to visit many European countries while her father was stationed in Germany.

Evans graduated from an associate arts nursing program in 2005, then worked in the ER (“I liked the adrenalin rush”) and ICU. Now a labor-and-delivery nurse, Evans says she’s found her passion.

“When I was pregnant with my son, the woman who took care of me was a travel nurse,” Evans said. “She’s the reason I got into nursing and wanted to be a travel nurse.”   Evans, a 43-year-old mother of two, had to wait to pack her bags, however, until her son, Jabari, graduated from high school.

“I got my first travel assignment two weeks before he graduated,” she said.  “He’s now in college and my daughter, Solange, will be in eighth grade.”

Evans isn’t quite sure what the future holds, but she knows it doesn’t include staying home. Her next 13-week assignment is in the Washington, D.C. area.  She also hopes to finish her BSN program this year “if I can get through this statistics class,” and would like to realize her goal of working on the West Coast for a year.

“I’m just waiting to see what develops,” she said. “I want to see San Diego, Los Angeles and Phoenix. My daughter is excited about going, too. We’re thinking about cyber-school for her. She can take classes online.”

A return visit to Ghana with her daughter is also on Evans’ agenda, perhaps this summer. Until then, she regularly sends boxes of supplies and hygiene products to the children through the foundation.

Evans’ recruiter at American Mobile, Marnie Tracey, says that Evans has what it takes to be a world citizen.

“Sheila is enthusiastic and outgoing and passionate about her work,” Tracey said. “She’s a perfect example of what you can do with travel nursing. She’s a mom and likes to be near her family, but also likes to go to new places. Her job as a traveling nurse offers her both stability and adventure.”

“Everyone needs to visit a country outside of the U.S.--a ‘third world country’--to appreciate what you have,” Evans said. “We take so much for granted, and going to these countries changes your outlook on life.”

International Travel Nursing: What To Know Before Going Abroad

Where you can go, how to prepare, and what you can earn as an international travel nurse.

If you’re looking to mix your love of healthcare with your sense of adventure, consider a career as a travel nurse abroad. Along with roles across the United States, you may find opportunities for international travel nursing jobs in destinations such as Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

In this Article

About the Job | Benefits of Travel Nursing | Salary | Educational Requirements | Finding Work Overseas | Living Abroad

A career in overseas nursing can come with a lot of questions, from where you can go to how much money you can make. Use this guide as a starting point to get the answers you need to these questions and more.

How International Travel Nursing Works

As with travel nursing in the U.S., international nursing jobs are typically found through agencies within their home countries. You must first be licensed to work as a nurse in the U.S. Then you must meet any requirements in the country or countries in which you’d like to work. Each country will have its own guidelines, so it’s up to you to do the research.

Where Are Travel Nurses Needed Overseas?

You can find opportunities for travel nursing abroad in destinations across the world. Some of the areas with the highest need for nurses include Australia, New Zealand, China, and the Middle East. Areas prone to high rates of disease and natural disasters may also have a demand for rapid response nurses who can provide critical care in the aftermath of these events.

It’s important to note, however, that it’s not common to find an agency that will send you to a country where you don’t speak the language. You’ll be expected to have at least a working knowledge of the local language before you’ll be considered for a nursing role in a foreign country.

What Kind of Jobs Are Available?

Jobs for travel nurses are available in a wide variety of areas. You’ll find patient populations ranging from the very young to the very old, and any number of conditions or diseases. You may find yourself working in a range of medical settings, from low-income clinics to state-of-the-art facilities.

International travel nursing is common. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that, “ one in every eight nurses practices in a country other than the one where they were born or trained. ” This is largely due to nursing shortages around the world. While you might have a heard a lot about the nursing shortage in the United States, there are areas around the globe facing even greater shortages.

You may tailor your job more specifically by earning a specialty certification . In-demand specialties may include emergency room, medical-surgical, pediatric nursing , intensive care, anesthesia, and labor and delivery. You can gain these credentials through organizations like the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, though you may need to gain additional certification in the country where you work.

How Long Are the Assignments?

While travel nursing assignments in the U.S. typically last between eight and 26 weeks, nursing jobs abroad are often longer. You’ll likely work for at least a year in destinations like Australia and Europe, while it’s common to commit to at least two years while working in the Middle East.

If you’re curious about international travel nursing but not ready to make a long commitment, there are numerous volunteer opportunities. Non-profit and charity organizations all over the country have opportunities for nurses to volunteer overseas . These trips generally last anywhere from three to six weeks. While you won’t earn a salary for this work, it can be a great way to make a difference while seeing if international travel nursing is a good fit for you.

Who Handles Travel Arrangements and Expenses?

Within the U.S., travel arrangements and expenses for travel nurses are typically handled by your agency. However, every agency works differently, so it’s important to ask questions to understand exactly how they operate. Like in the U.S., an international travel nurse agency may handle setting up your travel and housing, or it may provide you with stipends to do so on your own.

Benefits of Nursing Abroad

nurse examines smiling child on sandy beach

Not only does international travel nursing allow you to experience other cultures in new parts of the world, it can expand your own skills as a nurse as well. You’ll likely be exposed to different types of medical procedures and learn how to better communicate with a variety of patients. You’ll get to expand your own abilities while also lending your talents to a likely underserved area.

After completing an assignment, you also have the option to take time off. Some agencies allow you to take as much time off between assignments as you choose, while others put a cap on the number of days you can take in a row. However, taking an extended amount of time off could affect any benefits you might have, so make sure you fully understand the way your agency works.

The nonprofit National Association of Travel Healthcare Organizations (NATHO) touts international travel nursing’s flexibility and potential for cultural enrichment as invaluable benefits. A travel healthcare professional gets to see many different places around the world while earning a significant income. Plus, the travel nurse gets to decide the distance and time frame of each assignment.

Perks of Working as an International Travel Nurse

  • Housing stipends
  • Covered travel expenses
  • Stipends for food and other living expenses
  • The opportunity to experience life in a new country
  • Exposure to new medical technique and ideas
  • The chance to expand your communication and language skills
  • The opportunity to experience diverse cultures

How Much Can International Travel Nurses Earn?

travel nurse ghana

Most countries around the world pay nurses significantly less than you’ll find for travel nursing jobs across the United States, although your pay will vary depending on your location and specialty . But even in places where compensation doesn’t reach U.S. salary levels, there are other benefits that can make overseas nursing a rewarding job in many ways. For example, some countries in need of travel nurses have a lower cost of living. You’ll be paying less for things like housing, food, taxes, and utilities, so your paycheck might go a lot further than it would in the U.S.

You might expect to earn more if you specialize in high-paying areas such as cardiac catheterization, oncology, anesthesia, and pediatric and neonatal intensive care.

Where Could I Make the Most Money?

There are some locations that are known to pay more than others. Outside the U.S. and Canada, Europe may be where you’re likely to make the highest salary . According to Word Atlas, you’ll make the most in these European countries:

  • The Netherlands

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t earn an impressive salary in other countries. For example, while your salary in the Middle East might look lower on paper than back home in America, you won’t pay taxes on your income there. If you also have basics like housing and food covered, you may be looking at high take-home pay.

How Do Compensation and Benefits Work Overseas?

Compensation and benefits work differently depending on your city, your country and your agency. The only way to know exactly how your package will break down is to ask the agency for which you work.

Usually, you’ll receive an hourly wage that might seem somewhat low, but your pay is supplemented with additional benefits. Most agencies provide furnished housing for the duration of your contract, along with stipends for meals and additional travel. Your agency might also offer medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as paid time off, reimbursement for licensing, and end-of-assignment bonuses.

What Are the Educational Requirements for International Travel Nurses?

You’ll generally be able to find international assignments as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) , registered nurse (RN), or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), but it will depend on the location you’re hoping to work in. No matter what, your license will need to be in good standing and your degree will need to be from an accredited school. You’ll need to meet the requirements of licensing in the country you’re assigned to. Your first step will be to earn a degree and a nursing license.

Licensing and Certification Requirements

Following successful completion of your program, you’ll need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in order to apply for a nursing license in the U.S. The NCLEX has different exam versions for different nurse license levels. Both RNs and LPNs need to take and pass NCLEX in order to be licensed. APRNs will need to take the certification exam for their specific specialty. Your program can guide you to the exam you need.

After that, you’ll also need to secure any additional credentials that your travel country requires if you’re planning to pursue travel nursing positions abroad. This could mean simply taking a test, gaining certification, or completing an entirely new program. You might also need to take a test proving you can speak in the primary language of that country. Keep in mind that this also applies to English-speaking countries like Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Even if English is your native language, you’ll need to take the English language tests required of all international work visa applications.

You’ll then need to make sure you have a passport, a visa, a work permit, and any sponsorship that’s necessary. Each country will also have their own list of other documentation you need to present, such as your birth certificate, immunization records, and professional references. Plus, some countries will ask to see your transcripts to verify your education against their standards. The full process can sometimes take a year to complete and may also be expensive depending on additional requirements.

Finding Overseas Nursing Jobs

travel nurse ghana

Travel nursing jobs are typically found through an agency. Different agencies work with different locations and specialties, so it’s recommended to work with multiple agencies to find an assignment that meets your needs. Some agencies already have contracts to place nurses in overseas roles. This can be really helpful if you’re feeling overwhelmed about the testing, licensing, and other potential international travel requirements. Make sure you understand any possible drawbacks to working with the agency, such as the percentage of your pay that might go back to it.

Questions to Ask Your Agency

When researching agencies and contracts, ask questions such as:

  • What locations do you serve?
  • How is your pay package structured?
  • What do you provide in terms of health insurance?
  • Do you provide free housing or a housing stipend?
  • Do you offer paid time off?
  • Are there any signing incentives or end-of-assignment bonuses?
  • How much time can I take off between assignments?

Jobs Through the Department of Defense

There’s another option if you’re not comfortable finding international travel nursing jobs yourself or working with an agency. The United States Department of Defense has international jobs for nurses . You’ll still need to meet requirements to practice in the country you’re assigned to, but you’ll have a lot of guidance through the process. You’ll need to apply for an open job listing to start. If you’re selected, the Department of Defense will make sure you have everything you need to take on your overseas role. There aren’t always overseas jobs available, but if you’re interested in this route, it’s worth looking at available listings. You can set job alerts to be notified of new international postings.

Living Abroad as a Travel Nurse

person wearing mask sits alone in airport

Travel nursing abroad can be an incredibly exciting but also overwhelming experience. It can be tough to know exactly what to expect and being far away from family and friends can sometimes lead to feeling homesick.

If this is something you’re worried about, there are ways to make the transition easier. You might be able to bring along a significant other, but this will vary depending on your contract and housing situation. Another option is to buddy up with a friend who’s also a travel nurse. You can work with the same agencies and try to secure assignments in the same locations at the same time.

You might also be able to bring along a pet, but keep in mind that each country has its own rules for bringing in animals. You’ll likely need to get an import permit and have a health assessment performed by a vet. Pets may or may not need to be quarantined for a period of time upon arrival in the country.

Partnering with a fellow international travel nurse can help combat feelings of homesickness.

When packing to head abroad, keep things as simple as possible. Furniture and other household items will likely be provided by your agency, so often clothing and personal care items are all that you need.

When it’s time to start your assignment, don’t wait until the last minute to arrive. Give yourself time to settle into your apartment, get a rental car if needed, and get familiar with the city. Allow plenty of time to shop for any necessary items and figure out your daily commute.

It’s also a good idea to arrange a visit to the medical facility before your start date. Talk to your manager, get a tour of the unit, and ask any questions related to orientation or the day-to-day duties you’ll be tackling.

Pack light. Most agencies will provide furniture and other household items.

Once you start, you might have a day or two to familiarize yourself with the procedures and protocols of the unit, but you’re likely to be expected to jump right in. Take the initiative and ask questions whenever needed. If you have the experience and certifications to back up your skills, you should be able to walk in confident that you can work under pressure and with any patient.

Finally, international travel nursing is a great opportunity to learn the trade and explore the world, so take it all in.

Is a Nursing Internship in Ghana right for me?

Our Nursing Internship in Ghana is ideal for students looking for work experience before or during university.

This is a great accompaniment to your studies and will give you a clearer idea of the work you do on a daily basis. If your goal is a career in nursing, the skills you learn during your internship will be a valuable addition to your CV.

No experience? No problem! The goal of this internship is for you to learn, and you’ll gain a lot from shadowing local nurses and doctors. We recommend taking advantage of any opportunity to ask questions and take notes.

Your medical coordinator will teach you what you need to know before you work at any outreaches, and will there to supervise you throughout.

Our Nursing Internship in Ghana runs throughout the year, and you can join at any time.

What will I do during my Nursing Internship?

In Ghana, you work at a hospital, where you shadow and learn from nurses and other medical staff. During your internship, you will:

Shadow nurses and observe their work with patients in different hospital departments

Do basic health checks for the community during medical outreaches in rural areas

Run educational health campaigns on disease prevention and treatment methods

Your work will focus on the following areas:

Shadow nurses as they work with patients in the hospital

A big part of your  placement will see you observing and following nurses as they do their rounds. This will give you an idea of what nurses do on a daily basis. At your nursing placement in Ghana, you will see for yourself how important nurses are in the smooth functioning of a hospital. They care for patients, monitor them, and administer medication.

Experience work in different hospital departments

Hospitals in Ghana have different departments to meet the needs of the growing population. We recommend using this this opportunity to intern several, spending at least a week in which one. You'll see different illnesses and injuries across different departments. This will also give you a better idea on which departments you wish to work in in the future.

Provide free health checks and run educational campaigns at medical outreaches

You’ll take part in medical outreach work once or twice a week. Here, you’ll assist the nurses with basic healthcare checks at a leprosy camp, care centre, or in more remote areas. Here are a few of the tasks you do:

  • Clean wounds
  • Treat ringworm
  • Check blood sugar levels
  • Check blood pressure levels
  • Conduct malaria and Hepetitis B tests
  • Help nurses refer patients with positive test results
  • Help distribute medication

Another part of our outreach work is focused on education. Education is a huge part of empowering local communities and an important prevention method. Our goal is to improve standards of health in the community. We do this by creating awareness around various diseases and share knowledge about prevention and treatment. You will help with setting up and running these campaigns. These activities will give you invaluable nursing work experience in Ghana.

What type of nursing placements are available in Ghana?

You’ll work in Akuapem Hills or Accra at a general hospital or clinic. All nursing placements in Ghana have various hospital departments. We encourage you to stay in each department for at least a week so you can get the full experience.

Departments

  • General medicine
  • Paediatrics
  • Accident and emergency
  • Opthamology

We recommend discussing the different departments you’d like to intern in ahead of your trip with your Volunteer Advisor. On your first day at the hospital, you’ll discuss your work schedule with your project coordinator and meet your supervisor.

Where will I be working in Ghana?

Ghana’s capital city is a thriving trading centre and serves as the country’s administrative, economic, and educational centre. You’ll work at a general hospital and assist local nurses with the patients that come in to to be treated by the doctors. As Accra is the largest city in Ghana, you’ll see a variety of different medical conditions and treatment methods.

Akuapem Hills

Located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Akuapem Hills is characterised by vibrant green vegetation and rich red earth. As one of the quieter regions, children calling 'Obroni’ (foreigner) as they try to catch your attention will be unmistakable. The villages are welcoming and know how to entertain! When volunteering in Ghana, join in on the street festivities or try dried fish and yams at a food stall on the main street. The bustling city of Accra is within easy reach for a day trip.

Nursing interns will work at hospitals and join outreach events in the community.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Ghana Arrival Procedures page .

A typical day on the Nursing Internship in Ghana

Start your day after a good night's sleep in your host family’s home. Get dressed, eat breakfast and grab a tro tro or shared taxi to get to the hospital. Don’t forget your white coat!

Your day starts at about 8am, Monday to Friday. This will, however, depend on the department you are working in . Finish up around 2pm or opt to stay longer and continue your observations. Just be sure to check with your supervisor and the local staff beforehand.

Each day, you will find yourself assisting the nurses as they go around the hospital cleaning their ward, bathing and grooming patients and remaking beds. You’ll often spend the next hour shadowing the doctor in the ward as he visits each of his patients. Under the supervision of the local nurses, you can help check vital signs and administer medication according to doctor’s instructions.

If you’d like to head home for the day, head back to your host family's house. Tuck into a home-cooked meal of jollof, a traditional rice dish of rice with tomato sauce and meat, fish or chicken. To accomplish this, we implemented a Medicine Management Plan, which has five clear goals:

  • Encourage an understanding of medical practices and promoting an exchange of medical knowledge
  • Improve access to basic healthcare for disadvantaged groups through outreach work in leprosy camps and schools
  • Promote awareness of non-communicable diseases
  • Improve the quality of healthcare provided to patients
  • Reduce the number of cases of malaria

Steps to do Ministry of Health (MOH) clearance in Ghana

In this Article:

What is MOH clearance?

Official authorization for something to proceed or take place, The financial clearance is a form of authorization given to a Nurse in Ghana who has successfully completed an accredited public college known as Training College.

Why do clearance?

Clearance is necessary for Diploma nurses who want to leave the country for further education or in search of greener pastures. This is to certify that you are not owing to the government in any way.

Some Ghanaian trained Public nurses (Diploma) received allowances during their training and have to serve the government for a specific period of time called “bonding”

Also, Professionals (Diploma and Degree) who have taken study leave or support of any form from the government or their institutions have to obtain clearance from the ministry.

What do I do if I did not serve the government or my institution as agreed?

Clearance also known as “financial clearance” is given to both those who have fulfilled their obligations (served for the agreed duration) and to those who are yet to, thus bonded and those without bonding.

For those who have been bonded, the ministry will agree on the amount you may have to pay per annum for the number of years he/she is supposed to work, Unlike the bonded nurses, those who have not been bonded will not be required to make any payment (This depends on the decision by the Ministry of Health or your agency).

Enough of the grammar, let’s go straight forward to the steps to acquire clearance from the Ministry of Health, Ghana.

Requirements for MOH clearance

1. clearance form 2. Introductory letter duly signed for working staff or Completion letter from your Rotation facility for Nurses Awaiting Posting. 3. Passport Picture in uniform with white background

NOTE: All current Clearance forms are numbered (at the top right corner, starting with MOH/HRD…) and are registered on a form with the MOH, the contact of the buyer and receipt numbers are also noted, so photocopies will be detected.

Guidelines to apply for MOH clearance

Step 1 : Pay an amount of 100gh at the accounts department of the ministry and obtain an official receipt. Initially, the cost of the clearance form was 20gh but has been increased by the ministry. Proceed to the Human resource department (HRD) to collect your Form.

Make sure your form is endorsed at the back with the MOH stamp as indicated above.

Step 2 : Fill out the form and submit it to the head of your previous school or college for further endorsement or Submit it to your HR or Head of the facility for endorsement with a duly signed introductory letter.

Please we would like to bring to your notice that the MOH has increased the price of the clearance form from 20 to 100 cedis and this change took effect last Friday.

Please kindly note that the other change is that you need clearance from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) before NMC Ghana will do your foreign verification.

Another change is that once you’ve been cleared by the MOH, your endorsed clearance form will be sent to the NMC Ghana directly and then you follow up to make the necessary payments to the NMC for foreign verification. They will then give you a form to take to the GRNMA for clearance before the foreign verification is done. All this time, you should have already begun your registration with the UK NMC or the NMC of the country you need foreign verification or with CGFNS,  Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools for the USA, or With NNAS for Cannada.

You can as well reach the reception via 0548528454.

INTRODUCTION

Following the declaration of the novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a global Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30th January 2020, several countries instituted measures to curb the spread of the disease. In Ghana, similar measures were instituted in addition to the Executive Instrument (EI) 61 requiring some practices to be enforced.

The outlined measures below are applicable to flight crew and passengers arriving and/or departing KIA within the period of reopening the airport to international travel until further advised.

The Ghana Health Service in collaboration with other partners will provide Port Health Services to ensure safety of flight crew, passengers and users of the airport. Port Health Services at the airport includes all health-related activities within the terminal including laboratory testing, inspection of relevant health documents, screening and triaging of passengers and the management of ill persons including transfer to appropriate health facilities; environmental inspections, supervision of cleaning and disinfection of aircraft and the entire airport terminal among others.

Ghana Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Ghana (2024)

Ghana, a small country on the West coast of Africa, is one of the most accessible and safe destinations in the region. And it is packed with exciting historical and cultural things to do, as well as countless outdoor adventures.

Beautiful Ghana is one of my favourite places on earth. Having spent more than six months there, it feels like a second home. From the paradise beaches in the west of the country, the remote adventures in north near Tamale or the pulsating energy of Accra. I would happily return every year for the rest of my life to soak up the life, spirit and charm of Ghana.

Ghana Travel Guide

2019 was the Year of the Return, a global campaign to encourage those with Ghanaian ancestry to return and experience Ghana.

In the 1600s, Ghana was a major part of the transatlantic slave trade, with the castle at Cape Coast being the departure point for enslaved Africans from across the continent. From here, men and women from countries across West Africa were sent in boats in perilous conditions to the ‘New World’. Last year, Ghana’s campaign welcomed thousands with African heritage to retrace the journey of their ancestors, a highly emotional and spiritual experience.

If you haven’t been to Ghana yet, then you’re in for a colourful, vibrant experience. Aspects of life in Ghana can be a little hectic, and a little frustrating at times but if you prepare well, then it may well be one of the best adventures of your life! Read on to find out more.

Essential Things to Know About Ghana

History in ghana.

Before delving into this guide, it’s important to touch upon some of Ghana’s history. Its past is very complex, and Ghana had been colonised by European nations for over 2,000 years. The country gained independence from British colonisation in 1957. It was known as the Gold Coast before being renamed as the Republic of Ghana.

Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence post-colonialism. Its president at the time, Kwame Krumah was highly celebrated for leading the nation to independence and there are many tributes and buildings dedicated to him, especially in Accra.

The flag of Ghana is red, yellow and green, with a central black star representing Ghana’s emancipation from European rule.

Cape Coast Castle in Ghana

Ancient Ghana used to occupy a larger land area, which incorporated modern-day Mali, Senegal and Mauritania. Clashes between tribes gradually drove people towards the coast. Today, the Ashanti tribe is traditionally found in the central part of Ghana, surrounding Kumasi which is the country’s second city. They learnt to trade with Europeans early, which made them wealthy and helped the Ashanti to control a large area towards the coast.

Useful facts

  • Ghana is on GMT time, which means the country has the same time zone as London. Geographically, Ghana is located as close to the centre of the world as you can be, as the country located closest to the intersection of 0° longitude and latitude.
  • The currency in Ghana is the Ghaniain Cedi. It often written as GH₵ or GHS.
  • The main resources and exports in Ghana are gold, cocoa, diamonds, oil, coffee, sugar, shea nuts and rubber. Its cocoa industry alone brings in nearly a billion pounds every year!
  • There are around 30 million people in Ghana, with around 3 million in Accra. Some famous Ghanaians are Kofi Annan, who was the secretary-general of the UN, the editor of British Vogue – Edward Enniful and footballer Michael Essien.
  • Ghana is one of the most prosperous countries in Africa, with good governance and an ambitious population that has led it to being one of the most stable economies in Africa.

Streets of Accra

  • Although there are more than 100 ethnic groups in Ghana, the Twi language of the Ashanti people is the most widely spoken language in the central and southern parts of Ghana. In the north, Dagbani is more widely spoken which is the language of the Dagoma people. Overall, there are more than 40 languages, and 70 dialects in Ghana.
  • Otherwise, most people speak English, or sometimes pigeon English. Ghana, along with Nigeria, are the only English speaking country in West Africa, as the others all speak French – a legacy of their colonial past.
  • Most Ghanaians identify as Christian, but many uphold traditions and beliefs linked to their tribal ancestry, particularly in more rural areas.
  • There is also a sizeable Muslim community in Ghana, particularly in Accra and in the north of Ghana near Tamale. Accra recently received a brand new mosque , seating more than 15,000. Freedom of Worship is a constitutional right in the peaceful nation and as such, there is little conflict or tension between different religions in Ghana.
  • Ghana has an interesting tradition in designing and building elaborate coffins. You can read more about it here . Typically, the coffin is linked to the job the person had. However, when Karl Pilkington from an Idiot Abroad visited , he chose to have a custom-built Twix Bar coffin.. These are true works of art, taking months to build and based on the belief that life continues after death.
  • Ghana has a universal health care system, which covers nearly 12 million Ghanaians. The country has some of the best medical care in Africa.

Using the health centre at the University of Ghana in Accra

  • You will see Ghanaians all over wearing colourful clothes, called Kente Cloth . This is linked closely to the Ashanti Empire and is of great pride to Ghanaians. You can find local seamstresses at markets who will delight in creating you a tailored outfit using Kente Cloth.
  • Children from the Ashanti and Fante tribes are often given names based on the day of the week they was born. For example, Adowa, which means Monday. This can be either their first or middle name.
  • Soccer (football) is the most popular sport and pastime in Ghana. Any group of locals will welcome you to play – after all, football is a universal language!

Football in Ghana

  • Most Ghanaians will fiercely support a European football team (Manchester United is particularly popular) and on game days, dozens of people will gather around the screens all over.
  • There are more than 16 nature protection areas including Mole National Park in the north and Kakum National Park in the south. In these parks, there are more than 40 species of large mammals, nearly 200 species of birds and over 1,000 butterfly species.
  • In the east of Ghana is Lake Volta, which is the world’s largest man-made lake, extending over 320 sq miles. It’s so big, it can be seen from space!

Ghana Travel Guide

Getting there.

The main point of entry to Ghana is the Kotoka International Airport in Accra. This is where all international flights arrive.

Plenty of airlines fly to Accra, including Virgin and British Airways direct from the UK, and American Airlines and United from the US (from New York and Washington DC).

Other airlines flying into Accra include Air France, TAP Air Portugal, KLM, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar, Turkish Airlines and South Africa Airways.

Visa requirements

Many countries require a visa for Ghana, which has to obtained at an embassy before arriving in Accra. There are numerous African nations exempt from visas, make sure to check before arriving.

If you do require a visa, for example UK citizens, make sure to apply and begin the process well in advance of your arrival date. Make sure to check the Ghana High Commission website for the UK .

Medical requirements

All visitors to Ghana are required to have proof of a Yellow Fever vaccination. Proof is normally in the form of a small yellow book, given by the nurse who gave you the jab.

No other vaccinations are required for arrival into Ghana, but it is recommended to have had the following vaccinations:

  • Diphtheria, Polio and Tetanus (DPT)
  • Meningitis A,C,W,Y
  • Typhoid Fever
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Cholera (taken as an oral sachet)

The final two, rabies and cholera, are less taken by travellers to Ghana but I highly recommend both, especially if you plan to visit more rural areas in Ghana.

All these vaccinations add up, but I highly encourage you to take these precautions before arriving.

The main healthcare challenge to be aware of in Ghana is malaria. The disease is still prevalent in Ghana, and malaria-carrying mosquitoes are everywhere. I strongly recommend taking an anti-malarial tablet for the duration of your time in Ghana, which you can arrange in your home country before arriving.

Mosquito net in Ghana

There are a couple of main choices for an anti-malarial drug. Doxycycline and Larium are the cheapest and most readily available, but both can have some extreme side effects. Malarone (proguanil and atovaquone) is more expensive, but there are far fewer side effects. I recommend Malarone but ensure to speak to a healthcare professional.

Malaria in Ghana

Ensure to use a high percentage DEET based product on your skin, especially at dusk and in the evening. I also recommend sleeping under a net, unless you are in an air-conditioned upscale hotel room. I also used a fabric spray to deter mosquitoes that I used on my net regularly.

Although Ghanaians do tend to get malaria quite often and can be quite casual about it, for tourists it can be quite extreme to our more sensitive immune systems.

Getting around

Flights: There are a handful of internal flight companies in Ghana, primarily connecting Accra with Tamale in the north, Kumasi in the centre, Tema to the east and Takoradi to the west. Although quick, I wouldn’t necessarily advise taking these flights as they aren’t cheap and remove the adventure aspect.

Trains: The railway system in Ghana has typically been quite limited but routes are improving slowly in the south of the country. The trains currently in operation are unlikely to suit traveller itineraries, and are more aimed at commuters.

Buses: This is the main way to do long distance journeys in Ghana. They are generally safe and clean. and often are air-conditioned too.

The main company is STC, which has scheduled bus services throughout Ghana – and air-conditioning onboard. Always try and buy tickets in advance, as often seats sell out along popular routes.

Another bus company is VIP which also has modern, air-conditioned buses but tend to wait to fill up, before departing.

Both these companies have safety records and run from bus station to bus station. There are other bus companies around, with more dubious safety records and older, less well-maintained buses. Other bus companies may allow you to flag them down to alight on route.

Driving from Cape Coast to Ghana

Tro-tros: These are the iconic form of transport in Ghana, despite their total lack of safety. These are old minibuses, often a bare shell with various car parts taped on. People are crammed onto these and you could be sat between all kinds of people and animals – which can make for a very sweaty and smelly journey. Tro-tros ply every road in Ghana, making them very convenient and a crucial mode of transport all across the country. Although they are dirty and uncomfortable, they are a true way to be a part of Ghanaian life and I recommend you use them.

You can join them along the road. There will be a ‘tro tro mate’ hanging out the side of the bus shouting the destination and who takes your cedi from you. Alternatively, you can take a tro-tro from a bus station where you might get to pick your seats, but you have to wait for the bus to fill before it departs. Sometimes this can take a few hours if it’s a less regular route.

Interestingly, fares are regulated by the government so you shouldn’t be overcharged. Fares are low. As mentioned, tro-tros aren’t the safest form of transport. If you are very concerned about the driving or the bus itself, then try and disembark when you can and either take another tro-tro or hail a taxi.

A tro-tro in Ghana

Taxis: The other major form of transport, particularly around urban areas such as Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi is taxi. These are easily identifiable by the orange corners.

You can flag these down on the road, or find parked taxis. Always negotiate and confirm the fare before you start driving – most taxis don’t have a metered system. You can expect taxi drivers to offer you as a tourist quite a high price, but do not be afraid to negotiate on this. If you’re unsure of what the rate should approximately be, then ask a local at a hotel or in a shop.

Another option are shared taxis, which look the same, but drive to a fixed destination which is indicated with a sign. This can be a very cost-effective way to travel from A to B, especially on a more popular route. However, like tro-tros, you will have to wait for these to fill before they depart. As there are only 4 seats normally, this shouldn’t take too long.

Finally Uber is popular in Ghana, having arrived in the country in 2016. This excellent guide here covers everything you need to know about taking Ubers in Ghana.

Climate in Ghana

Oooh, it’s hot! Ghana is located in a subtropical zone, with temperatures over 30°C all year long. The rainy season is typically May to September, and temperatures drop slightly during these months.

Tamale and the wider northern Ghana region is hotter and more arid, with temperatures typically in excess of 35°C.

Climate in Ghana

Wifi and Local SIM cards

Wifi is plentiful in Ghana, and phone sims are cheap.

I would recommend getting a local SIM, even if your trip is just a week. The main providers in Ghana are Vodafone and MTN, and you pick up a sim for either at the airport or at the Accra Mall. You can then top-up your SIM easily at local stores across the country. After paying for the data you require, you receive a small piece of card where you can scratch off the silver bit for a code to enter in your phone.

More recently, the local app ExpressPay has created an easy way to top up mobile phone SIMs or make money transfers to trusted contacts.

Ghanaians love WhatsApp, and like other countries in Africa, you may find it easier to communicate with your favoured taxis drivers by WhatsApp, for example.

Money in Ghana

As mentioned, the main currency is the Ghanaian Cedi, and the smaller pesewa. I would always advise to keep some Cedi on you, and do not expect places to take cards.

ATMs are found across the country, with the main banks being Stanbic Bank and GTBank.

Water and Electricity

Tap water is not safe for drinking, and I recommend using a bottle or sachet of water for cleaning teeth too.

Plastic sachets of water are sold all over Ghana and are very cheap – just 10 pesewas each (one tenth of a cedi). They contain purified water, but some brands are better than others. Try and buy water sachets that are Ice Cool, Ice Pack or Everpure brands. You’ll know by taste if any of the water is of poor quality – it will either taste muddy or metallic. Don’t drink!

In terms of running water and sanitation in Ghana, most of Accra will have access to clean water. Water is generally provided in huge water tanks, which can tend to run out. When the supply becomes limited, you will need to use buckets for showering and washing clothes. If you’re staying in upscale hotels, this isn’t likely to be an issue and they will have backup reserves.

Bucket shower in Ghana

Western style toilets are available all over Ghana, but poorer or more rural areas may have more hole-in-the-ground style toilets. Just keep tissues and hand sanitiser on you, just in case!

Western toilets in Ghana

For electricity, load shedding is common across the whole of Ghana. Accra, as the capital is more likely to have 24 hours of electricity in a day, but all other places will experience a degree of load shedding.

Larger hotels and companies are very likely to have their generators to ensure guaranteed electricity. If the power cuts, they don’t always kick in instantly and there may be periods where you’re sweltering indoors. I used to find I would be drenched in sweat in the middle of the night when the power turned off the ceiling fan and I was under my mosquito net. Sometimes I’d get up and poor a bucket of cool water over my body and hair in order to cool down and get back to sleep.

Local language to learn in Ghana

‘Obruni!’ – this is probably the first word to learn. It means foreigner in the Akan language. It’s not an offensive term at all, and is often said with affection too. Do not be surprised if people shout ‘Obruni!’ at you in markets! And so you are aware, ‘Bibinii’ means black person.

TV Interview in Ghana

‘Chale’ – means friend or mate. It’s common for a Ghanaian to greet you with ‘Chale!’

‘ Abeg ‘ – means please, in pidgin English. It’s common to hear this in the markets when negotiating a price.

‘ Akwaaba’ – means welcome. You may hear this all over as people welcome you the country more broadly, or arriving in a village. I heard this a lot less after a few months, so I felt like I successfully looked like I had (somewhat) assimilated myself into Ghanaian life!

‘Medaase’ – thank you!

‘Chop’ – casually refers to roadside or stall food, or ‘to chop’ is to eat.

Customs and etiquette in Ghana

Customs and Etiquette

The left hand is considered rude and offensive, never pass anything with your left hand. Always use your right hand to pass or receive anything.

Pointing at people is considered rude, as is the thumbs up sign.

A common way to greet friends, or Ghanaians you’ve got to know is to do a handshake, followed with a hand twist and a click of the finger. Don’t worry, you’ll learn it in no time.

Ghana time is a real thing. It’s not uncommon for Ghanaians to be late by even as much as 2 hours. They even tease each other about how bad Ghanaians’ timeliness can be!

Ghana Travel Guide

Food in Ghana

Although Western food is often available, Ghanaian cuisine is delicious and essential to try on any length trip to Ghana.

The main staple foods are cassava and plantain, particularly around Accra and southern half of the country. In the north, the staple food is millet.

Throughout the country, yam, maize and beans are also cooked with. In Accra and the coastal regions in Ghana, tilapia is the main fish. You’ll see it being cooked on the streets and it is served up with many types of dishes.

Ghanaian food can be quite spicy. If you don’t like hot food, then say no to ‘ shito sauce ‘, an extra spicy sauce dolloped over your meal.

Fufu and groundnut soup

Some key Ghanaian dishes to try:

Jollof Rice – one of the most famous dishes! And the centre of many contests between Nigeria and Ghana as to who makes the best Jollof Rice! It is a tomato and rice dish, served with a fried chicken and shito sauce.

Waakye (pronounced Wacchee) – this is another rice dish served with beans. It isn’t often too spicy and is delicious with fried plantain, and other sides such as spaghetti, hard boiled egg and fish or chicken.

Banku – this is a dumpling made of a mix of fermented corn and cassava dough. You will often find this dish with stew and tilapia.

Fufu – similar to banku, this is boiled pounded cassava and plantain. It is often served in soups, like a groundnut soup. You take a piece of fufu dough, dip it in the accompanying stew and eat it! It’s delicious. This was my favourite dish in Ghana, I loved it. Sometimes goat is added to the soup, but you often say no goat pieces if you prefer.

Enjoying Ghanaian cuisine

Chichinga – mmm, Ghanaian kebab! This is a popular street food and is normally a mixture of chopped vegetables and a protein source, such as chicken or goat. This normally isn’t too spicy, although they do sometimes put a spicier paste called suya on it before grilling. Just ask them to stop before they cover the kebab.

Red-red – this vegetarian dish is mild bean stew and is delicious with a side of fried plantain. This is great for those who don’t like spice.

Plantain – similar to a banana, but larger and definitely more delicious. Plantain can be boiled, fried or cooked. It can be enjoyed as crunchy crisps too, easily purchased at local stalls.

Bofrot – these are delicious fried balls, that are doughnut-like in texture and taste. I was hooked as soon as I discovered them.

What is the Climate Like in Ghana?

The majority of Ghana is a tropical savanna climate, with a small part of the southwest being a monsoon climate.

North Ghana experiences its rainy season from March-November. South Ghana’s rainy season is from April to mid-November.

Average temperatures range from 21 to 28 degrees.

How Safe is Ghana?

Ghana is facing an increased threat from terrorist groups. Kidnapping that target Westerners have occurred in Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali.

Petty crime and scams are the most common crime that travellers face. Armed robbery and money solicitations at airports are on the rise.

Always remember to travel in groups and avoid travelling at night.

Homosexuality is illegal in Ghana and imprisonment can be from 3-10 years.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Coastal Forts in Ghana

The coastal forts of Ghana are a page out of history that helped create progress in Ghana’s modern world.

One of the largest forts in Ghana is the Cape Coast Castle that overlooks the sea. It was one of the world’s largest slave-holding sites and it still reflects the horror of that time.

The castle holds dungeons where slaves were held up to twelve weeks. In contrast, the castle also has a lavish governor’s bedroom to illustrate the inequality of the age.

Other forts to check out in Ghana include Fort Metal Cross, Fort Batenstein and Osu Castle.

What Should I Take To Ghana?

Here are some essential items to consider for your trip to Ghana:

  • Prescription Medicine – You can get basic medicine at pharmacies, but formulas may be different.
  • Water Filtration – Because of the risk of cholera, typhoid and other water-borne diseases, filtration is a must. Be sure to bring a filter or cleansing tablets.
  • Money – Bring travellers cheques or credit card and cash them at an ATM. Don’t use credit cards to buy items as credit card fraud is high.

Over 3,000 Nurses Left Ghana For Better Conditions Abroad In First Quarter 2022: Official Fears Looming Crisis

  • Nurses are leaving Ghana in huge numbers for better conditions in Europe and America, according to the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA)
  • The GRNMA has said over 3,000 of its members have left Ghana by March 2022 because of poor salaries and conditions of service
  • The Association says there is a looming crisis and has urged the authorities to intervene

Poor working conditions have compelled over 3,000 nurses in Ghana to migrate to other countries in the first quarter of 2022 for better opportunities, according to the mother association.

Nurse

The disclosure was made by a top executive of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), who fears a looming crisis.

According to a 3News report , GRNMA secretary for the Ashanti Region, Ebenezer Acquah, told Akoma FM that the migration of Ghanaian health workers, particularly nurses, to Europe and America needs to stop.

“There will be empty hospitals,” Mr Acquah fears.

He said the over 3,000 members of the GRNMA that left Ghana by March 2022 cited better working conditions in these countries as their motivation.

“Salaries for nurses are very low [in Ghana]. For the past two years, we haven’t adjusted our salaries meanwhile cost of living is on the rise so somehow we the executives understand the frustrations of our members,” the 3News reported quoted Mr Acquah.

While stories of Ghanaian nurses leaving Ghana for greener pastures abroad are not new, the disclosure that more than 3,000 have left Ghana by March is alarming.

Currently, the nurse-to-patient ratio stands at 1 nurse to 839 patients, exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended nurse-to-patient population ratio of one nurse to 1,000 population. However, the GRNMA fears the situation could soon deteriorate.

How to Become a Travel Nurse in 4 Steps

Suppose you are interested in helping people, looking for a career in an in-demand field with high job security and growth opportunities, and enjoy traveling. In that case, you may be the perfect candidate for a career in travel nursing.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that more than 200,000 new registered nursing positions will become available yearly between 2021 and 2031. Compared to other occupations, this means a faster-than-average growth rate for RNs. Travel nurses, who are a type of registered nurse, will reap the benefits of increasing job stability and opportunities in the field. Now is the time to dive in.

Below, we explore what a travel nurse is and how to become one in just four steps.

What is a Travel Nurse?

A travel nurse is a skilled, qualified, and licensed registered nurse (RN) , who accepts a temporary assignment at a hospital in a different geographical location than where they live.

Travel nurses are RNs from various clinical backgrounds and work for independent travel nurse staffing agencies. These agencies temporarily assign travel nurses to different care areas to fill short-term employment gaps. Amidst a current nursing shortage , travel nurses are in especially high demand right now.

Travel nurses can find work in the United States and international positions. The adventure and excitement of new opportunities (plus the higher-than-average pay) lead many RNs to explore a career as a travel nurse.

What Does a Travel Nurse Do?

Travel nurses have a variety of responsibilities, duties, and specific tasks depending on their specialty and the location they are working in.

For example, domestic travel nurses work within the U.S. for eight to thirteen weeks. On the other hand, international travel nurses work outside the U.S. on assignments ranging from one to two years, and nurses must wait for document processing before traveling.

The general responsibilities of travel nurses include the following:

  • Assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients in a variety of healthcare settings
  • Administering medications and fluids, assisting with activities of daily living and patient mobility
  • Reviewing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and imaging
  • Monitoring and providing oversight in all aspects of patient care
  • Collaborating with physicians in developing a plan of care
  • Providing resources for patients and referring them as necessary
  • Educating patients and families in all areas of healthcare maintenance and prevention
  • Working on assignments anywhere from eight to thirteen weeks (on average) in the U.S., one to two years if outside the U.S.
  • Learning various patient care systems/documentation

How Much Does a Travel Nurse Make?

Travel nurses are compensated at a higher-than-average level in the nursing field because they fill understaffed and needed positions. They also receive benefits such as healthcare and additions to their 401ks.

According to Zippia , traveling nurses make an average of $83,961 annually or $40.37 per hour in the United States. However, location does make an impact on how much a traveling nurse earns.

Traveling nurses make the most in Hawaii, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Michigan. Furthermore, it is common for vacation destinations to pay lower because of the competitiveness of those job openings and the high number of nurses applying.

How Do I Become a Travel Nurse?

1. be flexible and eager for new experiences..

Travel nurses regularly pack up and move themselves or their families to new locations, often leaving other family and friends behind. Therefore, you want to ensure your family and friends support this lifestyle.

Additionally, travel nurses who excel in their role generally enjoy the following:

  • Experiencing new cities, towns, and organizations
  • The freedom to choose when, where, and how long they will work
  • The flexibility in creating their schedule, benefits packages, and income
  • Learning new and challenging organizational systems and workflows

2. Pursue a Nursing Degree.

Those interested becoming a travel nurse need to first pursue a nursing degree through a two or four-year university.

Obtaining an associate degree in Nursing (ADN) is the standard requirement for aspiring RNs today, but a bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is becoming more common. Travel nursing candidates should be aware that many healthcare facilities often only hire candidates with a BSN or higher, and their chances at a higher salary will be better with a BSN.

3. Pass All Licensing Exams.

Upon completing at least an associate or bachelor’s degree, travel nurse candidates must pass all necessary exams, such as the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN©) , which is required for licensure.

4. Fulfill Agency Requirements or Other Necessary Certifications.

Many agencies require travel nurses to have a minimum of one year of hands-on bedside care or experience in nursing before being able to work as a travel nurse.

International nurses should also speak the language of the country they want to practice in, as communication is integral to effective healthcare delivery. Travel nurse candidates should research agencies and understand their exact requirements.

Aside from the NCLEX-RN, no additional exams are required for travel nursing. Depending on the specialty, however, additional certifications may be required.

Some certifications for traveling RNs might include:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification

A career as a travel nurse is exciting, rewarding, and financially lucrative. You can travel and see parts of the country or world you never have, help people live better and healthier lives, and make a good living.

If you are interested in pursuing a career that leads to travel nursing, it starts with a reputable nursing program like ours at Goodwin University. We have a variety of flexible nursing degree programs that work with all lifestyles.

Ghana Nurses have the opportunity to travel outside the country to work abroad easily. The process that Ghana nurses use to travel outside is very simple and straight to the point.

First of all, the nurse must write and pass an English proficiency test. Particularly, the nurse must write IELTS.

The English proficiency test ensures the nurse is able to communicate appropriately with the patients to ensure smooth service delivery

Clearance from the Ministry of Health (MoH)

Any nurse from Ghana who wishes to travel outside must obtain the necessary clearance from the Ministry of Health.

The clearance from the Ministry of Health is to ensure nurses who are under a bond with the country do not evade their bond.

The bonds normally involve whether a nurse has exhausted serving their mandatory service after study leave.

In the past, newly recruited nurses were denied their opportunity to travel because they were perceived to be under bond after taking student allowances during training.

However, Ministry of Health’s demand for newly trained nurses to service after school has been relaxed due to the lack of employment in the country.

However, employed nurses in the country who took study leave must exhaust their bond before traveling abroad to work.

Clearance from the Nurse and Midwives Council

Ghana nurses who want to travel outside to work must also clear themselves with the Nurses and Midwives Council.

This is to ensure that only competent nurses without any disciplinary or without any issue relating to practice, get the chance to travel to work.

Clearance from GRNMA or Union

The nurses’ union must clear the nurse before he or she can travel to work outside. This clearance is mostly related to whether the nurse owe the union any loan.

The nurse must therefore pay all outstanding loan before obtaining this clearance.

Police clearance

The Ghana Police must clear the nurse. This is to ensure the nurse has not criminal record. The implication for this clearance is, therefore, obvious.

Ghana nurses who want to travel to the UK to work must test themselves for Tuberculosis. Those who are positive are not allowed to work in UK hospitals

Arranged visa Ghana nurses

Some health facilities arrange visas for qualified candidates. However, the applicant must arrange his or her visa in some other instances depending on the policy of the institution.

Accommodations and insurance

Most health facilities provide accommodation for nurses. Also, insurance packages are provided to the applicants

Jobless nurses accuse Ministry of Health of engaging in extortion for placements

The Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association has alleged that the Ministry of Health is resorting to underhand tactics in assigning certain members by levying extra charges.

Nurses trainees

Expressing discontent, the group criticized both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance for failing to grant financial clearance and secure permanent employment opportunities for qualified nurses and midwives.

Recommended articles

Atta Asante, the association's general secretary, urged the Health Ministry in an interview with Citi News to accelerate the nurse assignment procedures.

"Some of us are being ejected from our homes because we are not being able to pay our rent. Some of us are sick. Some of us have different financial burdens. We have done a lot of things, but nobody, nothing is coming out of it.

"Any day, any time you go to the ministries, what they tell you is, go soon, it will come. We don’t know how soon this is coming. What is worse in the matter is, that some of our colleagues are being posted underground. You ask them and they will tell you I had a colleague who took me GH¢5,000, GH¢6,000, GH¢7,000 to get me this posting.

"You get to find out that even in 2022 those who are just about to finish their national service, some of them are in the wards working. Meanwhile, the 2020 batch are still in the house jobless."

Earlier, the jobless nurses issued a stern warning, indicating their intention to escalate their industrial action unless the government responds to their demands.

The group voiced discontent with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance, attributing their dissatisfaction to the absence of financial clearance and permanent employment for more than 75,000 graduate nurses and midwives, which they identify as the underlying issue.
